Seven corners.

Tin Leg

Travel insurance isn’t required for visiting Turkey , but it’s always a good idea.

Although most tourists have a safe and pleasant visit, Turkey presents a few common risks. If your trip is affected by something unexpected, insurance can help you recoup lost costs , pay for medical care and find medical transport in case of an emergency. If you fall and break a leg while climbing stairs in Istanbul, for example, your policy can help cover the hospital bills.

Risk of earthquakes and natural disasters

Turkey sits at the intersection of multiple tectonic plates, which means it sees a great deal of seismic activity. In fact, it’s one of the most active earthquake zones in the world; every part of the country is at risk.

Some areas of Turkey are also prone to other types of natural disasters, including wildfires and floods. These issues can be serious, rendering entire regions impassible and disrupting travel. A travel insurance policy can protect you if your trip is canceled or delayed due to earthquakes and other catastrophes.

Risk of terrorism and political demonstrations

Turkey is home to multiple terror groups, which means there’s always a risk of an attack. The tense political climate in Turkey can also pose a danger to travelers, especially when there are protests and demonstrations; the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has heightened this risk. Look for a travel insurance policy that can help minimize financial losses if your trip is canceled or interrupted due to a terrorist attack or political instability.

Water-related activities

Water activities are popular in the beautiful coastal regions of Turkey. If you’re planning to take a boat trip or go snorkeling and scuba diving, travel insurance is a must. It can pay your medical bills if you get into a boating accident or experience decompression sickness while diving. Since healthcare facilities in smaller Turkish towns aren’t always well-equipped, insurance can also cover costs for transportation to a larger city.

Adventure activities

Some parts of Turkey are known for adventurous activities. Before you hop in a hot air balloon in Cappadocia, you should have a travel insurance policy to cover unexpected accidents that might happen. This is especially important if you’re exploring remote areas in Turkey that could require a long plane or ambulance ride after an injury.

According to official sales data from Squaremouth , travel insurance for Turkey costs, on average, $263.26.

Our official sales figures over the past year show that our customers paid an average of $144.83 for travel insurance to Turkey.

Travel insurance for Turkey can cost as low as around $1 per day for the most basic medical and medical evacuation coverage.

For a more comprehensive policy that includes trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, we found that you can expect to pay around $7 to $11 per day.

We gathered multiple quotes from a variety of providers to give you an idea of possible prices for travel insurance .

Each of the plans below uses these details:

  • Age: 35 years old
  • Destination: Turkey
  • Trip Length: 7 days
  • Trip cost: $2,000

You can see four quotes for basic travel insurance in this first table. The cheapest travel insurance plan costs less than $1 per day.

Example Where Plan Doesn’t Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

This next table shows our price quotes for more comprehensive policies that include trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage. These plans range from around $7 to $11 per day.

Example Where Plan Does Reimburse the Full Trip Cost

Bear in mind that travel insurance premiums can vary widely from person to person based on several factors, such as:

  • State of residence
  • Date of purchase
  • Trip cost and length
  • Trip location
  • Planned activities

As you’re considering different types of travel insurance for Turkey, it’s important to read the terms carefully. Every policy comes with specific coverage options — you should understand exactly what a plan includes before you buy.

Trip cancellation insurance

A policy with trip cancellation coverage will pay back your nonrefundable costs if you have to call off the trip before departure. If you come down with COVID-19 a week before your flight to Turkey and can’t travel, for example, the policy will reimburse what you’ve already paid . Pay attention to restrictions; many plans require you to cancel 2 days or more before the scheduled departure date to qualify.

Trip delay insurance

This type of coverage reimburses the extra expenses you incur as a result of a delay. If your flight to Istanbul is pushed back by 12 hours and you have to stay overnight, your insurance will likely cover the cost of a hotel and meals. Trip delay insurance is particularly important for travel to Turkey, as many flights from the United States require a connection .

Trip interruption insurance

If an unexpected situation forces you to return home early from Turkey, trip interruption insurance covers the costs for the unused portion of the trip . This could happen if you’re injured while hiking the Lycian Way and can’t continue traveling, or if a family member passes away at home mid-vacation. Some plans will even pay you back for an earlier flight home, which could save you thousands of dollars.

Travel medical insurance

Pay close attention to the medical coverage in your travel insurance policy ; it determines how much the provider will pay for emergency healthcare during your trip. Most plans cover injuries, accidents and sudden illnesses . If you try street food in Istanbul and get severe food poisoning, the policy will cover your hospital stay. Some providers even offer translation services, which is helpful if the hospital personnel only speak Turkish.

Medical evacuation insurance

Medical evacuation coverage pays for your transportation during a health emergency. If you’re in a hot air balloon accident in Cappadocia, this might include a helicopter transfer to a well-equipped hospital in Ankara or Istanbul. And if doctors recommend you receive ongoing treatment in the United States, the policy can schedule and pay for a medical flight back home — an extremely expensive trip, given the distance from Turkey.

Insurance for personal items

This coverage can reimburse you if your luggage and belongings are damaged, lost or stolen during your visit to Turkey. Make sure to check limits and restrictions, especially if you’re bringing an expensive camera to capture the pools at Pamukkale or designer clothing for a night out in Istanbul.

Rental car coverage

This type of insurance pays for damage to your rental car — it’s a must if you’re planning a self-driving tour around Turkey. Road conditions can be rough in smaller towns and remote areas, and safety standards on the road may increase your chance of an accident.

Every travel insurance provider has a list of situations that aren’t covered by the plan.

Some common Turkey travel insurance exclusions are:

  • Extreme sports
  • Last-minute cancellations
  • Pre-existing conditions , although you may be able to get a waiver to cover pre-existing conditions
  • Routine or nonemergency medical care
  • Excessive drug or alcohol use
  • Suicide attempts

With so many options, it can feel overwhelming to choose the right travel insurance for Turkey.

Use these tips to find the right coverage for your trip:

Act quickly.

Many providers offer the best coverage if you buy a policy soon after making the first deposit for a trip.

Consider your itinerary.

If you’re traveling to far-off communities or rural destinations, look for high medical evacuation limits.

Check transportation coverage.

Travel insurance may only apply to common carriers — major transportation providers that serve the public.

Assess your plans.

Most policies exclude extreme sports. Read the details; many providers cover activities like scuba diving, but only if you meet specific conditions.

Are there COVID-19 restrictions for U.S. tourists?

Turkey has  no COVID-19 restrictions for travelers from the United States.

Do I need a visa or passport to travel to Turkey?

If you’re traveling to Turkey as a tourist, you don’t need a visa if you’re staying less than 90 days . For longer stays, you must apply for a visa. You’ll also need a passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter the country. Make sure your passport has at least one free page to accommodate Turkey’s entry and exit stamps.

Is Turkey safe for Americans?

As long as you’re sticking to major tourist destinations, such as Istanbul, Antalya, Cappadocia and Ankara, Turkey is generally a safe place to visit . The same goes for popular coastal areas.

Currently, it’s not safe to travel to eastern and southeastern parts of Turkey . You should avoid the regions along the border with Syria and Iraq. Ongoing conflicts in these areas make them extremely dangerous for tourists.

Is insurance mandatory in Turkey?

No; travel insurance isn’t mandatory for tourists visiting Turkey.

Is Turkey classed as Europe or worldwide for travel insurance?

This classification varies between insurance providers. You should read the fine print for each plan to determine whether the provider includes Turkey in Europe or if it’s covered under “worldwide travel” plans.

How much does travel insurance to Turkey cost?

The premiums for travel insurance for Turkey vary based on factors including the provider, traveler age, trip length, trip cost and place of residence.

How Does Travel Insurance Work in Turkey?

Ever had a plan that got totally derailed by unexpected curveballs? That's where travel insurance coverage steps in. Say you've booked your dream trip, but before takeoff, a sudden illness or a family emergency happens. Travel insurance can help assist and support you with non-refundable expenses like flights or hotels that you've already paid for but can no longer use due to these unforeseen events. You could get a refund for the things you can no longer enjoy. However, there is more to it than just that! Imagine you're exploring the ancient wonders of Turkey, and suddenly, someone in your group needs serious medical attention. That's where travel insurance goes beyond refunds. It offers services like medical evacuation, and swooping in to transport you or your family member to a better-equipped medical facility or a safer place if needed. Consider travel insurance as a steadfast companion throughout your Turkish escapade, not just for reimbursements for unexpected hiccups, but also for lending a hand when things take an unexpected turn. Here’s how travelers can benefit from an AXA Travel Protection Plan:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Post-Departure Travel Benefits

  • Trip Interruption: In case of an unexpected event, you could be eligible for reimbursement for the unused portion of your trip.
  • Missed Connection: If you miss a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations, this coverage may help with expenses like rebooking fees and accommodations.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Turkey?

If you're not seeking a visa for your Turkey visit, travel insurance isn't a compulsory requirement. You can indeed journey to Turkey without it. Nevertheless, it's highly recommended to get travel insurance whenever you venture abroad, even if it's not obligatory. The coverage it offers can be valuable, providing support and assistance against unforeseen circumstances during your travels. Why? There are several reasons:

Medical Emergencies: Your health is a top priority. If you face a sudden illness or injury in Turkey, travel insurance offers the means to receive prompt and quality medical care.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue on.

Missed Connection: Missed connection coverage comes in handy when you find yourself stranded due to flight delays or cancellations, helping cover additional expenses for accommodation or transportation if you miss a connecting flight. It's a lifesaver when unforeseen circumstances mess up your flight schedule, keeping you from getting to your destination on time.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost for Turkey?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Turkey will be offered three tiers of insurance: Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each provide varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Turkey hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. The Platinum Plan stands out as the ideal option for enhanced coverage, like the Lost Golf Rounds, during your Turkey adventure. This can be very beneficial since Turkey is known for its world-class golf resorts and can help you get back your prepaid green fees if a scheduled round of golf is missed due to covered reasons like illness or injury during your trip. This can help you not lose out on these planned golfing experiences and make a nice option for a golf lover exploring Turkey.

What types of medical coverage does AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

Axa covers three types of medical expenses:

Emergency Medical: covers medical expenses, hospital stays, and even emergency evacuations, covering the expenses of hefty bills and ensuring access to quality healthcare while away from home.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: covers your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: offer assistance in unexpected situations such as political unrest or natural disasters, ensuring safe and timely relocation to a secure location or repatriation back home.

No, there are no longer any strict COVID-19 restrictions to enter Turkey—no vaccine proofs, quarantines, or mandatory masks are needed anymore.

Traveling with pre-existing medical conditions can complicate your plans, but with AXA Travel Protection, we're here to support you during your trip. Our Gold and Platinum  plans offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.  The Platinum plan, in particular, is our highest-offered choice for travelers who want our highest coverage limits and optional add-ons,

What does this mean for you? If you've got a medical condition that's been hanging around, you can qualify for coverage under our Gold and Platinum plans with a pre-existing medical condition , so long as it’s within 14 days of placing your initial trip deposit and in our 60-day look-back period. We're here to ensure you travel easily, no matter your health situation.

1.Can you buy travel insurance after booking a flight?

You can buy travel insurance even after your flight is booked.

2.When should I buy Travel Insurance to Turkey?

It's advisable to purchase travel insurance for your trip as soon as you have made your initial trip deposit (prepaid and non-refundable trip costs.) AXA Travel Protection offers coverage as soon as you purchase your protection plan. We can give coverage against unforeseen events before you leave for your trip. Additionally, our policies offer coverage for preexisting medical conditions and Cancel for Any Reason if you purchase your protection within 14-days of making your initial trip deposit.

3.Do Americans need travel insurance in Turkey?

You don't have to get travel insurance if you're a US citizen visiting Turkey, but it's highly recommended you do so. Even though it's not mandatory, having travel insurance for Turkey can really save the day if you face any unexpected travel hiccups or health issues.

4. What is needed to visit Turkey from the USA?

U.S. citizens traveling to Turkey for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days within a 180-day period typically need an e-Visa. This e-visa can be easily obtained online before arrival in Turkey.

5. What happens if a tourist gets sick in Turkey?

If you become sick in Turkey, travelers with AXA Travel protection can contact the AXA Assistance hotline at  855-327-1442 . Contact information is typically provided within the insurance documentation. Please ensure to read through your policy details and information.

Home | Travel | Travel Insurance for Turkey – Requirements and Cost

Purchasing travel insurance for Turkey is always a smart idea, no matter what type of trip you’ll be taking. Mishaps, delays, and accidents can occur at any time while you’re traveling abroad, and travel insurance is often the only means of getting health insurance coverage in a foreign country.

Turkey travel insurance is an absolute necessity for many travelers, however, since you must show proof of travel health insurance coverage to obtain a Turkish visa. Of course, not all travelers need a visa to enter to Turkey, but many do.

In any case, even if you don’t need a visa to enter Turkey, buying insurance for travel to Turkey will ensure that you’re covered for any injuries or illnesses you experience while traveling, as well as for any travel-related misadventures. You’ll often find that travel insurance is worth having in the end.

If you’re in a rush, I’ll tell you that we’ve been using Heymondo travel insurance for the past few years, and it’s been the best option for us. Whether it was dealing with an illness or getting an injury abroad, Heymondo’s coverage and customer assistance were there for us. You can even get a 5% discount for being our reader.

Guide to Turkey travel insurance

As I’ve already mentioned, if you need a visa to enter Turkey, you must buy travel insurance for Turkey as part of your visa requirements. Passport-holders from the following countries must have a visa to enter Turkey:

Countries that need a visa to enter Turkey

Even if you don’t hold a passport from one of these countries, you should at minimum purchase health insurance for Turkey travel to cover any potential medical bills, especially since the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) doesn’t work in Turkey. Of course, health insurance from other countries also doesn’t apply in Turkey, so purchasing Turkey travel medical insurance is the only way to guarantee medical coverage.

This guide to Turkey travel insurance will cover the following information:

What travel insurance do I need for Turkey?

Luckily, the travel insurance requirements for Turkey are simple. The main requirement for Turkey visa travel insurance is that the policy must cover travelers for the duration of their stay in Turkey.

Naturally, the most important type of coverage is for medical expenses, so your policy should at least be a Turkey travel medical insurance plan . You can always opt for a Turkish travel insurance plan with travel-related coverage as well if you’d prefer to be covered for issues like trip cancellation and baggage loss.

Just to be safe, you should ensure that your travel insurance for Turkey includes COVID-19 coverage . Nowadays, most travel insurance plans do have some kind of coronavirus coverage, but, as always, some plans offer more coverage than others.

For more information on Turkey’s travel insurance requirements , visit the Turkish government’s website .

Getting travel insurance for a Turkey visa doesn’t have to be expensive. Just keep in mind that your age and nationality, as well as the length and cost of your trip, will affect the cost of your travel insurance for Turkey .

To give you an idea of Turkish travel insurance prices, I’ve generated quotes by using the example of a 30-year-old American who is traveling to Turkey for two weeks and whose trip costs $2,500.

Heymondo , as you’ll see, easily stands out as the best travel insurance for Turkey , but all of the Turkey travel insurance companies in our comparison have their merits. To help you choose the best travel insurance for Turkey for your needs, you’ll find information below on all four companies’ advantages and disadvantages.

1. Heymondo , the best travel insurance to Turkey

Heymondo ’s Turkey travel insurance plans have it all: a high amount of coverage in all travel- and medical-related categories, incredible value for money, a $0 deductible for medical expenses, and coverage for COVID-19 testing and treatment.

heymondo travel insurance, Turkey visa travel insurance

Add in the fact that Heymondo pays your medical expenses directly and upfront for you, so you don’t even have to file a claim, and it becomes clear why Heymondo is considered the best travel insurance for Turkey .

As I said, we’ve been using Heymondo for over three years now, specifically the annual multi-trip insurance , and we have no complaints. One of my favorite things about Heymondo is their customer support app, which I’ve used to quickly file a claim when I lost my luggage. The service team takes care of the rest and I got reimbursed in no time.

If you’d like to learn more about the company, check out our Heymondo travel insurance review . You can even save 5% on Heymondo’s Turkish travel insurance plans with the discount code below.

2. World Nomads , a top-rated travel insurance for Turkey

If you’re planning on scuba diving, hot air ballooning, or kayaking while you’re in Turkey, World Nomads has got you covered. Their Standard and Explorer plans include coverage for hundreds of sports and activities, so you can adventure to your heart’s content without worrying about having to pay hundreds of dollars if you get injured.

World Nomads insurance, Turkey travel insurance requirements

Beyond sports coverage, World Nomads’ Turkey travel insurance plans include solid coverage in all medical- and travel-related categories, as well as coverage for COVID-19 treatment. There’s even a $0 deductible for medical expenses.

Still, although World Nomads offers excellent insurance for travel to Turkey , you can, in fact, get higher coverage in all categories for a lower price with Heymondo . As such, World Nomads is best suited for travelers who plan to do lots of exhilarating, potentially dangerous activities.

3. SafetyWing , the cheapest travel medical insurance for Turkey visa

Of course, you may just want to buy the cheapest plan that fulfills Turkey’s visa travel insurance requirements . Still, looking for an affordable price doesn’t mean you should skimp on quality coverage.

SafetyWing travel insurance, Turkish travel insurance

Luckily, SafetyWing is a Turkey travel medical insurance that offers the best of both worlds: excellent medical coverage and a reasonable price. Their Nomad Insurance plan also provides worldwide coverage, so you can head to other places besides Turkey, and coverage for COVID-19 testing and treatment. You can even choose to automatically renew your plan every 28 days until you pick an end date.

As with most travel medical insurance , SafetyWing doesn’t offer much travel-related coverage, which is not necessarily a problem, as you certainly don’t need this kind of coverage to meet Turkish visa requirements. SafetyWing’s major drawback, though, is its $250 deductible for medical expenses, which means you’ll have to put $250 towards any medical bills before SafetyWing pays any remaining balance.

4. IMG , a reliable travel health insurance for Turkey

IMG is consistently ranked as not only one of the best Turkey travel insurance companies  but also one of the best travel insurance companies in general. As such, you can’t go wrong with their plans, which offer high, reliable coverage in all categories.

IMG travel insurance, Turkish travel insurance plans

As with most top travel insurance for Turkey , IMG offers a $0 deductible for medical expenses and includes coverage for COVID-19 treatment. Moreover, their iTravelInsured Travel Lite plan is affordably priced, considering it offers both travel- and medical-related coverage.

If you feel that IMG’s already high coverage isn’t sufficient for you, though, depending on your age and nationality, you could get twice as much coverage for just $1 more with Heymondo .

You may be wondering, does Europe travel insurance cover Turkey ? After all, part of Turkey is located on the European continent, while the rest of it is located in Asia.

Ultimately, the answer to this question depends on the particular European travel insurance you’re looking at. Some insurance companies include Turkey in their European coverage, while others put the country under their worldwide coverage. Heymondo , for instance, includes Turkey as part of their European travel insurance coverage.

Turkish mosque, travel insurance for Turkey

The best way to find an answer is to check with your individual insurance company when you’re purchasing insurance for travel to Turkey .

In summary, you must obtain Turkey travel insurance if you need a visa to enter Turkey. Even if you don’t need a visa, purchasing travel insurance for Turkey is an excellent idea because it will guarantee medical coverage if you fall ill or get injured.

As you’ll have seen from the comparison above, Heymondo stands out as the best travel insurance for Turkey for travelers who want both travel- and medical-related coverage. For travelers who are looking to save a little money, SafetyWing , the best Turkey travel medical insurance , is an equally viable option.

Whichever plan you choose, if you need a visa, just make sure that your policy covers you for the duration of your stay in Turkey. Hopefully, this guide has covered everything you need to know about insurance for travel to Turkey , but if you still have any questions, feel free to leave a comment down below.

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance serves as a safety net, offering financial protection and assistance in various unforeseen situations that may arise during your trip. It is designed to mitigate the risks associated with travel, providing coverage for incidents such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost baggage, and more. Understanding the fundamental components of travel insurance is crucial for ensuring that you select the most suitable policy for your journey to Turkey.

One of the primary benefits of travel insurance is its ability to mitigate the financial impact of unexpected events. For instance, if your trip is disrupted due to a sudden illness or injury, travel insurance can cover the costs of medical treatment, evacuation, and even trip cancellations. Additionally, in the unfortunate event of lost or delayed baggage, travel insurance can provide reimbursement for essential items, offering a sense of security during your travels.

Moreover, travel insurance often includes 24/7 assistance services, providing access to a global support network in case of emergencies. This can be particularly valuable when traveling to a foreign country like Turkey, where language barriers and unfamiliar healthcare systems may present challenges in times of crisis. By understanding the protective umbrella that travel insurance offers, you can embark on your Turkish adventure with confidence, knowing that you are prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

Types of Travel Insurance for Turkey

When planning a trip to Turkey, it’s essential to explore the various types of travel insurance available to ensure comprehensive coverage throughout your journey. The diverse landscapes and cultural experiences that Turkey offers necessitate specific forms of insurance to address potential risks and provide peace of mind for travelers.

1. Medical Insurance : Prioritizing your health and well-being is paramount when traveling, making medical insurance a fundamental component of travel coverage. In the event of illness or injury during your Turkish adventure, medical insurance can cover expenses related to hospitalization, emergency medical treatment, and repatriation to your home country. Given the importance of accessing quality healthcare while abroad, medical insurance is indispensable for travelers exploring Turkey’s enchanting destinations.

2. Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance : Unforeseen circumstances such as flight cancellations, natural disasters, or personal emergencies can disrupt your travel plans. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance provide reimbursement for non-refundable expenses, ensuring that you are financially protected in the event of unexpected trip disruptions. This type of insurance is particularly valuable when embarking on a journey to Turkey, where diverse experiences await, from historical marvels to natural wonders.

3. Baggage and Personal Belongings Insurance : Protecting your belongings while traveling is vital, especially when exploring a culturally rich and geographically diverse country like Turkey. Baggage and personal belongings insurance offer coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged items, providing financial recourse in situations where your possessions are compromised during your travels.

4. Adventure and Outdoor Activities Insurance : For travelers seeking adrenaline-pumping experiences such as hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia or water sports along the Turkish Riviera, adventure and outdoor activities insurance is essential. This specialized coverage addresses the inherent risks associated with adventurous pursuits, ensuring that you can partake in exhilarating activities with confidence and security.

By understanding the distinct types of travel insurance available for a Turkish expedition, you can tailor your coverage to align with the specific experiences and potential risks associated with your travel itinerary. This proactive approach not only enhances your travel preparedness but also allows you to immerse yourself fully in the wonders that Turkey has to offer, knowing that you are safeguarded against unforeseen events.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Travel Insurance

As you embark on the journey to select the most suitable travel insurance for your Turkish escapade, several essential factors warrant careful consideration. By evaluating these key elements, you can ensure that your chosen policy aligns with the specific requirements of your trip, providing comprehensive coverage and peace of mind throughout your travels.

1. Coverage for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions : If you have pre-existing medical conditions, it’s crucial to ascertain whether your travel insurance provides adequate coverage for these conditions. Understanding the extent of medical coverage and any exclusions related to pre-existing conditions is essential for managing potential health-related risks during your travels in Turkey.

2. Destination-Specific Coverage : Given Turkey’s diverse landscapes and travel experiences, including historical sites, coastal regions, and adventurous activities, it’s important to ensure that your insurance policy offers destination-specific coverage. This may include provisions for medical care in remote areas, coverage for outdoor activities, and protection against travel disruptions in regions with distinct travel risks.

3. Trip Duration and Frequency : The duration of your trip and the frequency of your travels should influence the type of insurance you select. Whether you’re planning a short, one-time visit to Turkey or embarking on multiple trips throughout the year, choosing a policy that aligns with your travel patterns is essential for maximizing the value of your insurance investment.

4. Policy Exclusions and Limitations : Thoroughly reviewing the exclusions and limitations of a travel insurance policy is imperative for understanding the scope of coverage. This includes examining restrictions related to adventurous activities, high-value belongings, and specific travel scenarios, ensuring that you are aware of any potential gaps in coverage that may impact your Turkish journey.

5. Emergency Assistance Services : Access to reliable emergency assistance services is vital when traveling to a foreign country like Turkey. Evaluating the scope and responsiveness of the insurance provider’s assistance network, including medical evacuation and 24/7 support, can significantly impact your peace of mind and preparedness for unforeseen events.

By carefully evaluating these factors and aligning them with your unique travel needs, you can make an informed decision when choosing travel insurance for your Turkish adventure. This proactive approach not only enhances your travel preparedness but also ensures that you can fully immerse yourself in the captivating experiences that Turkey has to offer, knowing that you are equipped with comprehensive and tailored insurance coverage.

Turkey: Safety and Travel Insurance Advice for Visitors to Turkey

For many visitors, Turkey represents the best of all worlds: a culture steeped in a rich Middle Eastern culture in a European country. While Constantinople is no more, it once saw oversaw a powerful empire, and whether your travels take you to cosmopolitan Istanbul or out into the countryside, you are guaranteed a visit to a place filled with both rich history and a vibrant, thriving present. Before you go, let’s make sure you have all the information you’ll need to protect your health and safety so you can be sure that you make the most of your time in this fascinating and beautiful and country. We will start with advice on safety and travel insurance for visitors to Turkey.

What You Need to Know Before Traveling to Turkey

Political unrest in turkey.

While Turkey is not yet a member of the EU (Turkey applied to join the EU in 1987, but negotiations have stalled), many EU citizens need only a National ID and not a passport to enter. Recently, Turkey has faced a significant amount of political instability, climaxing in a 2016 failed coup attempt. While this has died down, it led to a heavy-handed government response and a low tolerance for demonstrations. Visitors to Turkey are urged to avoid both protests and any situations which are likely to be political. Whether a gathering or action is government-sanctioned or organized in protest of the government, it’s a good idea to steer clear in case there is violence.

Terrorism Consideration When in Turkey

Like the rest of Europe, terrorism has become a larger threat in Turkey. The United States has issued specific warnings against travelers visiting the Southeast portion of Turkey that borders Syria because of the heightened threat of terrorism. You can find out the latest from the United States State Department here . There is also a specific aviation warning with Turkey as a target. One way to minimize this danger is to try and book direct flights. Additional precautions that are a good idea to minimize the risk of terrorism include avoiding large crowds and tourist hot spots.

Common Sense in Big Cities

Like all large cities, traveling in Turkey will put you at risk of theft and pickpockets. Familiarize yourself with common sense practices, like keeping electronics out of sight, using a money belt, and leaving valuables at home or in the hotel to ensure you do not become a victim.

Risk of Disease

Malaria is present in the southeastern area of Turkey, and if you are traveling there, then you will need to take prophylactic medications to avoid catching malaria.

Safety Tips for Foreign Women in Turkey

Many women have safe and enjoyable visits to Turkey, but for visitors from Western countries, who have no experience visiting a Muslim country, is best to familiarize yourself with some cultural etiquette and common-sense precautions to ensure you have an enjoyable stay.

  • Dress Formally: These days, many travelers place comfort over looks, but in choosing what you bring, while it’s fine to opt for comfortable options, it’s also a good idea to choose clothes that are more conservative: skirts and pants that are not above the knee, long-sleeve shirts and items that keep the shoulders covered and have a higher neckline. While temperatures can become warm, by choosing the right fabrics like light synthetics, linens, and cotton, you will find that keeping your skin covered will protect you from both the sun and the heat
  • Visits to the Mosque: Use this as an opportunity to invest in a beautiful scarf you love. When visiting a mosque, you’ll need to have your head, knees and shoulders covered. Follow the above tip, and the second two will already be taken care of. There’s no reason for women to wear a headscarf outside of a mosque should they prefer not to, but it is both required and a sign of respect to the place you’re visiting. All visitors to mosques must also remove their shoes, so if you plan to visit several in a day choose shoes that are easy to take on and off.

An Overview of Turkish Healthcare System and Types of Insurance

Turkey has universal healthcare for its residents called, Genel Sağlık Sigortası. If you are registered with the Social Security Institution (SGK), then you receive health care from SGK hospitals and facilities, free of charge. You are eligible for this healthcare if you have been a resident of Turkey for at least a year and have been paying into the socialized system. That being said, for many residents from other European countries, the UK, Australia, and the US, Turkey’s socialized healthcare system is not up to the same standards to which they are accustomed. Many internationals living in consider an expatriate insurance plan .

On the other hand, Turkey has a thriving private healthcare system, which is relatively affordable to pay for out of pocket in comparison to the medical costs of many people’s home countries. In fact, Turkey’s private healthcare system has lately seen such strides; the country has been establishing a name for itself in the medical tourism industry, so that people will travel to Turkey to seek medical care that is both quality and affordable. However, for many permanent residents, Turkey requires that to maintain residency, health insurance in Turkey must be purchased.

Insurance Options for Expatriates in Turkey

Until recently all expats were required to purchase permanent healthcare to live in Turkey permanently. This was regardless of whether it made financial sense, as many expats would exclusively use private healthcare and preferred to pay out of pocket and very likely would prefer to avoid the bureaucracy of purchasing an unused insurance policy through the Turkish government. There has been a significant recent change to Turkish healthcare that is of particular note to expats retiring to Turkey, however. As of 2014, Turkey no longer requires those over 65 who wish to have permanent residence in Turkey to purchase government healthcare. There are those who still opt to buy into SGK even though they are no longer mandated. Whatever your age is, if you are taking up private residence in Turkey it is a good idea to look at all the options of private insurance compared to that which is offered by SGK and weigh it against what are your healthcare needs to make the decision that is best for you.

Vaccines, Medications and Diet Considerations for Turkey

There are two major health concerns that are food and water-related that travelers to Turkey should be especially aware of: Hepatitis A and Typhoid, both of which can be contracted through exposure to food and water. There is now a readily available Hepatitis A Vaccine, but many did not receive it as a young person. It is advisable to make sure you have a fully completed course of this vaccine before traveling to Turkey. It is also a good idea to get a Typhoid vaccine. Especially if you are an adventurous eater, are staying in private homes or visiting rural areas.

The two other vaccines worth considering are Hepatitis B and rabies. Hepatitis B is spread through sexual contact, contaminated needles, and blood products, so if you’re planning on piercings or a tattoo, you would be at risk. If any of these categories apply to you, get a vaccine.

Rabies exists in mammals in Turkey, especially bats and dogs, and the vaccine is recommended for those planning on a lot of outdoor activities, those moving to Turkey, those planning to work with animals, as well as children who are more likely to come into contact with a rabid animal and not report the situation, being unaware of the dangers.

Pharmacies are common sites in towns and cities throughout Turkey. While all travelers are urged to bring an ample supply of any medications that will likely be needed as well as photocopies of prescriptions, one advantage for Turkey is that many drugs that require a prescription are available quite affordable and over-the-counter in Turkey.

There is some debate about the safety of drinking water in Turkey. Indeed, the safety of water is based in part on where you are. In rural areas, well water will not be consistent, while different cities have different filtration systems installed. Further complicating matters, even in a city with an excellent system of water filtration, the pipes in older buildings may contaminate the water before it reaches you through the top. For this reason, it’s best to plan on drinking bottled water during your stay in Turkey, which is readily available, affordable throughout the country, both in stores and by delivery to the home. However, how much further you should like to take the insistence on bottled water beyond drinking will be a matter of personal choice. Whether to only used bottled water for cooking and brushing teeth, only used boiled water for food preparation, avoiding ice cubes or avoiding all fruits and vegetables that have not been thoroughly cooked is something which every person must decide for themselves. As you consider your options, the best advice is to ease into coming into contact with natural water sources as slowly as possible and think any time you visit a different area of Turkey as starting over to acclimatizing yourself to the water. If you don’t want to miss out on eating fruits and vegetables, and always prefer your beverages with ice cubes wherever in Turkey you may go, then it’s best to make sure that you do have the Typhoid vaccine up to date. Besides that, the most danger a healthy person is likely to face is an upset stomach.

Turkey is famed for its food, and also for being renowned for how delicious it is, it’s also beloved for its health. The produce and dried fruits are some of the best in the world. Enjoy the food and try and learn how to make a new dish that you can take home and enjoy a taste of Turkey wherever in the world you go.

Covid-19 - what our travel insurance covers

Our travel insurance now covers you for certain events related to Coronavirus (COVID-19), provided you have proof of a positive Covid-19 test and your cover is active at the time of the event.

What we cover

We provide cover for some costs related to Covid-19: please see Section 1 'emergency medical costs and repatriation' and Section 2 'cancelling or cutting short your trip' in your policy book for full details on what's covered.

We'll cover you if:

  • you were diagnosed with Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • a close relative died or became seriously ill as a result of Covid-19 before your trip was due to start
  • you weren't allowed to board your pre-booked outbound travel due to symptoms of Covid-19
  • an insured person or a close relative died during the trip because of Covid-19
  • you couldn't take part in an excursion due to you self-isolating after getting Covid-19

What we don’t cover

You won't be covered if:

  • you had reason to believe your trip may be cancelled, postponed or cut short when you booked it, purchased your policy or started your trip
  • any government or public authority imposes travel restrictions or quarantine on a community, location, or vessel because of Covid-19 (this includes, but is not limited to, local lockdowns, entry requirements, being denied entry and airspace closures)
  • you have to quarantine after arriving in the UK or abroad
  • the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) change their advice to avoid ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to your destination because of Covid-19

For more information about how Coronavirus (COVID-19) affects your travel cover, see our FAQ page . And remember to check the policy booklet carefully before you buy to make sure our cover meets your needs.

Holiday Insurance to Turkey

With almost six months of summer in the south, Turkey has long been a favourite of British sunseekers who flock to the sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Turkish Riviera.

The fascinating country has a rich history, perfect for curious holidaymakers who want to explore the old meets new of Istanbul and the country’s ancient ruins.

For those with a head for heights, Aladaglar National Park has become a popular choice for rock climbers, while walkers can tackle a whole host of trekking routes taking in the country’s mighty mountains and valleys.

With so many exciting adventures on offer, it pays to get the right travel insurance in place for a trip to Turkey – particularly if you need to access healthcare or medical treatment while you’re away.

Do I need travel insurance for Turkey?

Travel insurance isn’t compulsory, but it’ll cover you for emergency medical treatment and the unexpected things like:

  • Cancelling or cutting your trip short
  • Your personal belongings being stolen
  • The airline losing your bags

Admiral has three levels of cover - Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum - so you can choose your cover based on your budget and needs. Plus you can choose Single Trip if you just want to cover one holiday, or annual cover which will protect you for multiple jaunts throughout the year.

No matter which you choose, all our policies cover:

Read the full list of benefits in the policy summary booklet .

Is Turkey part of Europe?

For insurance purposes, we class Turkey as part of Europe. Our European Travel Insurance covers 50 countries, and stretches the boundaries of Europe to include places like:

Some insurers may not class Turkey as part of Europe, so you’d need to look at their worldwide cover – make sure you check before buying your policy.

Despite Turkey being classed as Europe, the EHIC (European travel insurance card) and the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) aren’t valid there so you’re liable to pay for any medical costs out of your own pocket if you don’t have travel insurance in place.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?

British citizens with a standard UK passport can travel to Turkey without a visa for 90 days during any 180 day period. If you plan to stay in the country for longer than 90 days, a Short Term Residence Permit will be needed. These can be applied for from the Turkish Provincial Directorate of Migration Administration

British citizens with a different type of British nationality (e.g British Overseas Citizen) will need to apply for an e-visa from the Turkish E-Visa website before travelling, as these passports are considered “Special Passports” .

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

Despite years of political uncertainty and terrorist attacks (as recently as 2017) in the south and east of the country, as well as Ankara and Istanbul, millions of Brits continue to flock to Turkey every year.

In 2018, Brits made 2.3million visits to the country, most of which are trouble free, according the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

There is, at the time of writing (March 2019) advice against travel to areas within a 10km border with Syria. The FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to:

  • All other areas of Sirnak, Mardin, Kilis (including Kilis city) and Hatay provinces
  • Provinces of Diyarbakir, Tunceli and Hakkari

You won’t be covered by Admiral Travel Insurance if you visit a country that the FCDO has advised against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’.

What if I have a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is a short or long term illness or injury you have or have had before you buy travel insurance. This includes having symptoms, tests, diagnosis or medical treatment for a condition.

You can declare your pre-existing conditions during the quote process to see if we can offer cover. If you’re unsure what needs to be declared or if you're unable to find your condition on the medical conditions list, please contact us on 0333 234 9913 .

Your pre-existing conditions won’t be covered unless you’ve:

  • Declared them all on your policy
  • Received written confirmation that we’ll cover your medical condition
  • Paid any additional premium in full

Policy terms and conditions apply. Please note, if you’ve had a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 and been prescribed medication, received treatment, or had a consultation with a doctor or hospital specialist for any medical condition in the past two years, this needs to be declared on your policy.

If you don’t tell us about your pre-existing conditions or give us incorrect information, your policy may be invalid, and we may refuse all or part of any claim you submit.

For a quote with us, click the green button above.

Travel Insurance for Turkey

Our turkey travel insurance policies have no age limit and cover pre-existing medical conditions..

Turkey welcomes 24.7 million holidaymakers each year. From the glorious beaches of Antalya to the brilliance of Bodrum or the history of Istanbul, Turkey is one of the UK’s most popular holiday hotspots.

Before you start planning your holiday, make sure you secure Travel Insurance for Turkey tailored to your medical needs.

Discover Turkey’s beaches and cultural blend

Turkey is a dream holiday destination for beach lovers, with more than 450 beaches to choose from. The Aegean Coast is the perfect spot to explore if you go beyond the white sand beaches, home to coves, forested peninsulas and many fishing communities. It’s the perfect day away from your resort.

With influences from both the Middle East and the Mediterranean, Turkey is a combination of cultures. Whether you’re getting lost in the food markets of Istanbul or wandering around the world’s best-preserved ancient sites, there is always something new to see.

Water sports and activity cover in Turkey

There’s so much more to Turkey than lying by the sea. Watersports are incredibly popular along the coast, with paragliding being particularly popular. If you plan to do any water sports or other fun activities during your holiday, ensure that any activities you plan on doing are covered by your Travel Insurance for Turkey. As standard, your Turkey Travel Insurance policy will include ‘activity pack A’, which covers a range of activities, including some water sports. However, this pack does not cover everything, so you may wish to add ‘activity pack B’ to your Travel Insurance to Turkey for an additional premium. When getting a Travel Insurance for Turkey quote online, you can see in detail what activities fall under each pack.

Our Travel Insurance tips for visiting Turkey with peace of mind

We’ve designed a set of travel tips to help you better understand Turkey so you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest and ensure your Travel Insurance for Turkey covers everything you need, including your age, activities, and medical conditions.

> Dress appropriately and respectfully > Bring your travel adapter > Eat, eat, eat > Enjoy the history

Dress appropriately and respectfully

Dress codes vary depending on location. In most coastal resorts and major cities, you can wear what you wish – but if you’re travelling to more rural or religious areas of the country, you should dress more conservatively.  For instance, both men and women should cover their arms, shoulders, and legs. If you decide to visit a Mosque, women should take extra precautions and keep their hair covered. Both men and women should also be prepared to remove footwear.

Bring your travel adapter

If you’re wondering what adapter is needed for Turkey, the standard plug is a type F, also known as Schuko. The standard voltage is 230V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. You will need this for any electrical appliances you bring with you to Turkey, including your phone charger or hair styling tools.

Eat, eat, eat

Turkey is the perfect location for food lovers! The cuisine is among some of the best in the world. Famously known for its kebabs, the popular dish is just the start of the delicious tastes you’ll experience while on your trip.

The destination’s abundant and diverse cuisine is primarily due to its geography. Turkish foods typically use fresher ingredients that are less seasoned. They are often rolled, kneaded, or shaped before cooking. Savour each bite, enjoy the flavours and make the most of your time in Turkey. If you suffer from any food allergies, make sure to let any restaurants know before you eat and declare this as a pre-existing medical condition on your Turkey Travel Insurance policy should  you need medical attention due to any allergies declared, your medical expenses will be covered.

Enjoy the history

As a country rich in history, you should take part in a tour of Turkey’s many historical landmarks. No wonder UNESCO World Heritage accredited two of Turkey’s top historical sites.

Turkey Travel Insurance Requirements

Last updated: 03/07/2024

As tourism has increased in Turkey, so has the total medical costs for treating visitors. This has parlayed into more medical bills being left unpaid.

Therefore, it is now a requirement for travelers from outside countries to purchase medical travel insurance in order to be granted access to Turkey. The only specific requirement in place is that the policy must cover travelers for their entire trip, from start to finish.

Squaremouth’s Turkey Travel Insurance Recommendations

Medical travel insurance benefits are the most important pieces to look for when buying travel insurance for a trip to Turkey. While these benefits are required to gain entry into the country, there is not a set amount that is needed.

However, due to the potential for high medical coverage during an international trip, Squaremouth recommends travelers visiting Turkey buy a policy that meets our recommended medical coverage for international travel. This means travelers should purchase a policy with at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage, and at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage.

Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation are separate benefits. Emergency Medical can reimburse travelers for the cost of treatment during their trip, such as hospital fees and physician services. Medical Evacuation can cover the cost of an evacuation to the nearest hospital in the event of an emergency.

In addition to these required benefits, Squaremouth recommends a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes other benefits for the most common travel insurance concerns. Primarily, this includes Trip Cancellation coverage and Medical Evacuation coverage.

For travelers who are concerned about losing their prepaid trip expenses if they need to cancel their trip to Turkey, Squaremouth recommends insuring these costs through the Trip Cancellation benefit. This benefit can reimburse 100% of a traveler’s prepaid and non-refundable trip costs if they need to cancel for a covered reason, such as not being able to travel because they are sick with Covid-19 or another illness.

How To Choose The Right Travel Insurance Plan For Turkey

Selecting the right Turkey travel insurance plan can be overwhelming with the myriad of options available. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you choose the best plan for your trip to Turkey:

1. Assess Your Travel Needs

Trip Duration and Destination:

  • Consider the length of your stay and the regions you plan to visit in Turkey. Longer trips and visits to remote areas may require more comprehensive coverage.

Activities Planned:

  • Identify the activities you will be engaging in, such as adventure sports, cultural tours, or beach relaxation. Some activities might require special coverage.

Health Considerations:

  • Evaluate your health status and any pre-existing conditions. Ensure the plan covers medical needs specific to your health.

2. Compare Different Plans

Coverage Options:

  • Compare the coverage offered by different plans. Look for essential features such as medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost baggage, and travel delays.

Cost vs. Benefits:

  • Weigh the cost of the plan against the benefits it provides. A cheaper plan might not offer sufficient coverage, while an expensive plan might have unnecessary features.

Exclusions and Limits:

  • Review the exclusions and coverage limits of each plan. Make sure there are no hidden surprises that could leave you unprotected.

3. Understand the Terms and Conditions

Policy Fine Print:

  • Read the policy document thoroughly to understand the terms and conditions. Pay attention to exclusions, limits, and the claims process.

Cancellation Policies:

  • Check the policy’s cancellation terms. Ensure you understand the refund policy if you need to cancel your trip or the insurance.

Emergency Assistance:

  • Ensure the policy includes 24/7 emergency assistance and support, especially important for international travel.

4. Check Customer Reviews and Ratings

Reputation of the Insurance Provider:

  • Research the insurance provider’s reputation. Look for customer reviews and ratings to gauge the reliability and customer service quality.

Claims Handling:

  • Check how the insurance provider handles claims. Look for feedback on the ease and speed of the claims process.

5. Seek Recommendations

Ask Fellow Travelers:

  • Get recommendations from friends or family members who have traveled to Turkey and used travel insurance.

Travel Forums and Social Media:

  • Participate in travel forums and social media groups to get insights and recommendations

best places to visit in turkey

Located in the Mugla Povince in the southern Aegean region of Turkey, Bodrum is the site of the ancient fortified city, Halicarnassus, which was once home to marble buildings, temples, statutes, paved streets and the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

After falling into ruins, the city remained a quiet fishing village until the 20th century when Turkish intellectuals brought popularity to it through their writings. Today, Bodrum’s intriguing ruins, stunning beaches and cliff-top resorts attract people from all over the world.

On Bodrum’s eastern side, tourists will find a beautiful beach overlooking brilliant blue water. Near the beach are plenty of cafes, bars and nightclubs. On the western side of town is the marina, shopping centers and restaurants.

No visit to Bodrum would be complete without seeing the Castle of St. Peter, also known as Bodrum Castle. Built from 1402 by the Knights Hospitaller it now operates as a museum. Other sights include the last remains of the Mausoleum, and ancient amphitheater and the Myndos Gate, which was once the scene of a bloody battle during a siege by Alexander the Great.

Spectacular scenery frames the city with gorgeous beaches and lush green mountains dotted with ancient ruins. From swimming and sailing to mountain climbing, sightseeing and family fun, Antalya offers something for everyone.

A walk around Kaleiçi, the Old Quarter, offers a step back into the city’s ancient past with views of the old city walls, Roman gates, maze-like streets and historic structures that include the Clock Tower and beautiful, old churches, mosques and temples. At the heart of the Old Quarter is the Cumhuriyet Square, surrounded by shops, cafes, Turkish baths and street performers.

Antalya’s main beaches, Konyaalti and Lara, offer white sands, water sports, resorts, bars and restaurants. Nearby the beaches are water parks, amusement parks and a zoo. Several museums exhibit artifacts and relics from the area, including the award-winning Antalya Museum.

Is turkey classed as europe for travel insurance policies.

Turkey straddles two continents, Europe and Asia. We include Turkey and many other countries in our European annual travel insurance. This is because they are geographically near to Europe and have similar medical care costs. Other countries we include are Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco. See our European travel insurance page for more details and a full list of countries.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?

No. As a British citizen you can travel to Turkey for tourism or a business trip for up to 90 days without a visa. If you have plans to stay longer, you will need to apply for a longer stay visa or a residence permit. You can find more information about visas and entry requirements for Turkey here .

How much is travel insurance for Turkey?

Turkey travel insurance will vary in price depending on many factors:

  • Your age and any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Whether you’re visiting any other countries
  • The cover level you choose
  • Whether you need add on cover for any activities, valuables etc
  • If you want an annual or single trip policy

Get a quote online now to find out how much your travel insurance for Turkey will cost.

Do you need travel insurance to visit Turkey if you have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC/EHIC)?

The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) does not cover all countries and cannot be used in Turkey. You will need to buy a travel insurance to Turkey policy if you want cover for emergency medical expenses.

In countries where the GHIC does apply, it gives you access to some state healthcare at the same cost as local residents. Which will often mean free or reduced-cost medical treatment. But remember, the GHIC does not provide cover for cancellation of your holiday or loss or theft of your belongings.

Do you need travel insurance for Turkey?

Unless you need to get a visa for your trip, it isn’t mandatory to get travel insurance when you’re visiting Turkey. However, it will provide cover if anything goes wrong. Travel insurance can help with costs if you have a medical emergency, need to cancel your trip for reasons outside your control, or you face legal expenses. You could rack up high costs if these things happen and you don’t have travel insurance. So it is recommended that you buy a travel insurance to Turkey policy before you go.

Who can buy an InsureandGo Turkey travel insurance policy?

All our travel insurance for Turkey policies are available to UK residents. This means:

  • Someone who has been living in the UK or the Channel Islands for at least six of the last 12 months
  • They must be in the UK at the time of purchase
  • All trips must start and end in the UK

A trip to Turkey offers toasty beaches and tourist treats aplenty. No wonder it’s so popular with holidaymakers from the UK and elsewhere.

If you’re making the journey, make sure you know what to expect in terms of the local culture, access to healthcare, potential risks to watch out for, and why having travel insurance is important.

Travelling to Turkey?

Turkey has one of the most fascinating histories of any country worldwide, with a myriad of ancient civilisations having called it home as well as a vibrant and diverse contemporary culture.

It has something for everyone, from shimmering beaches to bustling cities; remote and historic settlements to modern shopping. Its unique cuisine, spellbinding architecture, colourful bazaars and abundance of history have made it one of Brits’ favourite holiday destinations.

Before jetting off to see its many sights, make sure you’re aware of the reasons you need adequate travel insurance for Turkey.

The currency of Turkey is the Turkish lira . Before you travel, make sure you have enough of the currency in notes. Or alternatively you can load it onto a prepaid travel money card , for easy access to your holiday cash while you're away.

Protect what matters when you go with good travel insurance

Healthcare for brits in turkey.

You will need to have holiday insurance with good medical cover to ensure you’re not out of pocket if something should go wrong.

You may need to get certain travel vaccinations before visiting Turkey, so make sure to see your doctor at least 6 weeks before travelling.

Turkey has an abundance of stray animals, particularly cats and dogs. While the cat that jumps onto your café table may seem cute, animal-borne diseases like rabies and parasites such as fleas are present in Turkey, so it’s better to stay away.

If you suffer a medical emergency, dial 112 to request an ambulance. Be sure to alert your travel insurance company as soon as this happens.

Travel risks in Turkey

The political climate in Turkey was very tense for a while following a failed coup attempt in 2016 by groups hostile to President Erdogan. These tensions culminated in general and parliamentary elections in 2018. The situation has since calmed and a state of emergency imposed after the coup attempt has been lifted, though some restrictions remain in place.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) page for Turkey advise staying away from demonstrations. The south east of the country borders Syria and Iraq, and the FCDO advise against any travel to this area. There is also a list of the provinces where terrorism and hostage taking are most likely.

Regional considerations

Istanbul is one of the most popular destinations for holidaymakers travelling to Turkey. It’s a what’s-what of historical monuments and areas, with the Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque , Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern and Istiklal Avenue to name a few. No wonder it’s a big draw for tourists.

But as is often the way with populated areas, pickpocketing can occur. To make sure you’re staying safe when you’re on the move, follow the advice in our guide to avoiding holiday scams . If you’re visiting one of Turkey’s many beautiful beach resorts, then take care to protect your valuables by following these simple tips for protecting valuables on beaches .

There are regions of Turkey that the FCDO advises against travelling to, located in the south, southeast and east of the country. Consult their page for details. Your holiday insurance may be invalid if you travel to these areas.

Turkish culture

Turkey has become a more conservative country in recent years, however is still a largely secular and liberal place. Always be respectful of local customs, such as wearing appropriate clothing and covering up when visiting mosques or religious sites.

It is an offence to damage Turkish currency or be disrespectful to the Turkish nation and its flag and can come with heavy penalties. If in doubt, try not to engage in political discussion and be careful about voicing thoughts that might be considered as insulting or offensive.

Turkish culture is very sociable and you shouldn’t be concerned by people wanting to engage you in conversation. Food, coffee and tea are great ways to find out about Turkish social life, as well as more unconventional experiences like Hammams (traditional Turkish baths).

Turkey is keen to become a cashless culture, however it’s wise to have a ready supply of Turkish lira for street vendors and cafés. You can also take a prepaid travel money card , which gives you the freedom to pay by cash or card and helps you budget too, since you can't spend more than you have loaded onto it.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Turkey?

Having travel insurance for Turkey isn’t compulsory but it can provide welcome reassurance if something goes wrong on your trip – from delays and cancellations to lost or stolen luggage or the need to seek emergency medical treatment and more.

With the right level of cover in place, you’ll be able to claim back expenses or losses you incur from accidents, illness, theft and travel disruptions. It can also give you access to emergency assistance if you’re faced with any such issues.

Always check what you are covered for, as different travel insurers will have different exclusions. Adventure activities like pony-trekking, scuba-diving, surfing and cycling might not be covered – or only be covered in certain circumstances. Taking a copy of your holiday insurance policy with you means you can check spontaneous activities before deciding to participate in them, and it will have all of the important contact details in case something goes wrong.

Is Turkey covered by European travel insurance?

This can vary by travel insurance provider. Some, including Post Office Travel Insurance , class Turkey as part of Europe in their policies even though it’s not part of the European Union. Others consider it outside Europe, including it in their worldwide cover instead. Whichever provider you go with, make sure you check to be sure.

Make the most of your holiday

Whether you’re getting stuck into Turkey’s ancient cultural heritage or simply enjoying the reliably brilliant weather, we want you to have a great time. By following good travel advice and doing a bit of preparation, you can relax and make the most of your holiday.
