15 Shows Like Outlander That Are Definitely Worth Your Time

Outlander Brianna Claire Jaime

Starz period drama "Outlander" has romance, swashbuckling, men in kilts, historical intrigue, and oh yeah, a bit of time travel as well. Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, "Outlander" tells the story of Claire (Caitriona Balfe), an English World War II nurse who finds herself thrust back in time to 18th-century Scotland, where the brawny Scots don't take too kindly to English folks. Out of convenience (basically so she doesn't get kidnapped by the Brits), the Scottish clan she joins marries her off to the young Jamie Frasier (Sam Heughan) and the two actually fall in love.

"Outlander" follows the epic romance between Jaime and Claire over decades, through time, and via many a great sex scene. Eventually, Claire makes her way back to the 1940s, then back to the 18th century again. Their travels bring them from Scotland to France, the Caribbean, and America when the young nation is in its infancy. The show is really addicting and offers some nice period pleasures. If you're an "Outlander" fan and need something to warm your kilt for while we wait for the next season, check out these 15 shows that are worth a peek. Some have magical elements like "Outlander," others are just straight-up historical dramas or romances, but they're all worth your time.

Simon and Daphne Bridgerton

If you love "Outlander" for the sex scenes and the romance, there's really no reason not to check out "Bridgerton" on Netflix. The steamy show is based on the romance novels by Julia Quinn and follows the wealthy Bridgerton family in Regency Era (early 1800s) London. The first season revolves around the romance between eldest daughter Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Duke Simon Basset ( Regé-Jean Page ) as rumors of scandals and affairs swirl via the famed Lady Whistledown, the city gossip who publishes a juicy newsletter, appropriately voiced by Julie Andrews .

The second season will focus on oldest brother Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and his reluctant turn from his anti-marriage, bachelor-for-life, free-wheeling lifestyle to absolutely falling for Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley). You can bet we're in for more sex set to instrumental pop songs, more juicy scandals, and some pretty gorgeous costumes to swoon over. With eight Bridgerton children, there were eight books, which means we're likely in for eight seasons of the sexy show.

Claire Foy The Crown

OK, so there's not so much sex in this one. Actually, it's quite stuffy and prudish, but still filled with interesting historical events, intrigue, and some pretty awesome costumes. Netflix's "The Crown" begins with Queen Elizabeth II's coronation and early reign, as well as her marriage to Prince Philip. It shows how she became a post-war Queen for the modern era, sort of. In the first two seasons, Elizabeth is played by Emmy winner Claire Foy, after which Oscar winner Olivia Colman takes over for Seasons 3 and 4. Prince Philip was portrayed by "Doctor Who" alum Matt Smith , with "Outlander" actor Tobias Menzies taking over in Seasons 3 and 4.

In the upcoming final two seasons, Imelda Staunton dons the crown with Jonathan Pryce at her side. Seasons 3 and 4 introduced the beloved Princess Diana, played then by Emma Corrin, and the final two seasons will dive more into the post-breakup years, with Elizabeth Debicki playing the former Princess of Wales. There's no magic or sex in the very proper "The Crown," but the tension between family members and the real-world historical events keep your eyes glued to the screen.

Demelza and Poldark

If you'd rather stay relatively close to the era of "Outlander," check out "Poldark." Based on the books by Winston Graham, "Poldark" doesn't have a sci-fi twist, but does share a feisty heroine and gruff leading man. The show revolves around Captain Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner), who returns home from fighting in the American Revolution (for the British, of course). Once home, he has to face numerous hurdles: the ruin of his estate, in shambles after his father's death; the embarrassment of losing to the Americans; and the loss of his childhood sweetheart, who has gone off to marry someone else.

Ross hires a local town girl Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) as a maid to help him clean up his house and lands, which are in disrepair. The two have a spark from day one, and the romantic tension is palpable. As Demelza scrubs and cleans, and Ross broods and plans, they fall in love and eventually get married. There are five seasons of "Poldark" to watch. Over the course of the series, their relationship grows, as do the romances and scandals of other characters involved.

A Discovery of Witches

A Discovery of Witches

It seems all the best shows are based on books—especially novel series that have multiple installments from which to mine multiple seasons worth of story. That's the case here with "A Discovery of Witches," the fantasy series based on the "All Souls" trilogy by Deborah Harkness. Set in a world where witches and vampires coexist but avoid one another, Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a witch with a Ph.D., works as a history professor at Yale while also studying alchemy at Oxford. But Diana has all but rejected her background as a witch, refusing to learn how to wield her magic and choosing to live life as a regular person.

Enter Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), a centuries-old vampire working at Oxford who enlists her help in finding the ancient Book of Life. Matthew helps Diana uncover her dormant abilities, but that's obviously not the only thing going on with their intense chemistry. Matthew and Diana working together, let alone falling for one another, is taboo in their communities. We've got a case of magical forbidden love here, and much like "Outlander," "A Discovery of Witches" also includes a bit of time travel along with its magical romance.

Black Sails

Black Sails

If the parts of "Outlander" you loved most involved Jaime Fraser sailing across the sea, "Black Sails" might be for you. The series is set up as a prequel of sorts to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," and follows pirate James McGraw, AKA Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), whose buried treasure is what's being hunted in Stevenson's original novel. Other characters and famous pirates appear in "Black Sails" before they've made names for themselves. Long John Silver, for example, is just a budding con artist named John Silver (Luke Arnold).

"Black Sails" definitely leans more into bawdy territory than "Outlander." Its "intimate" scenes are more in line with "Game of Thrones" and much less on the romance end of things. But it also offers up some inspiring female characters in the form of lady pirates, who are just as brave and brutal as the men. "Black Sails" is definitely more action-heavy as well, with explosions on the sea and swashbuckling swordfights that would give any action period film a run for its money.

King Louis Versailles

If salaciousness is what you're after, look no further than the French series "Versailles." The show is set during the reign of King Louis XIV, the French king who built the opulent Palace of Versailles and whose extravagance came to epitomize the image of French royalty as out of touch with the common man (which eventually led to the French Revolution a few of Louis' descendants later). The costumes, sets, wigs, and storylines here are as extravagant as its characters, and while the show can certainly be seen as a "guilty pleasure," there shouldn't be anything guilty about something so fun.

As actor Alexander Vlahos, who plays the king's brother Phillipe, told The LA Times , "The whole idea of opulence is a big-ticket item in our present-day culture because of the whole 1% thing... So 'Versailles' gave people an opportunity to sort of invest in that culture without shame... A lot of people got into the show thinking that it would be a guilty pleasure, and then they got hooked on everything else there." Three seasons of guilt await.

Victoria Jenna Coleman

For something a little more proper, head to Masterpiece on PBS for "Victoria." The drama tells the story of the young Queen Victoria, one of Britain's longest-reigning monarchs, played here by Jenna Coleman. The show starts with Victoria inheriting the throne at 18 and setting about finding a husband to help her have a bunch of little princes and princesses. Tom Hughes plays Albert, her eventual spouse, whose difficulty with playing second fiddle to a beloved queen echoes some of the same plot points in "The Crown."

"Victoria" ran for three seasons, ending with Prince Albert collapsing while ill (we won't spoil anything for you here if you don't know the story of Prince Albert). Though Season 3 ended in something of a cliffhanger, it doesn't look like a fourth season is on the way any time soon. In July 2021, a spokesperson for the show said, "There are no plans presently to film Victoria, but that's not to say we won't revisit the series with the production team at a later date," Town & Country Magazine reports . Even so, the series is intriguing, and the abrupt ending isn't much of a deterrent.

The Great

For something on the opposite end of the spectrum, Hulu's "The Great" takes a period piece and turns it into something decidedly unorthodox. The show follows Russian Empress Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) as a young ruler alongside her Emperor husband, Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). But "The Great" describes itself as positively "un-historical." That is, everything is exaggerated, there's heavy satire, and nothing can really be believed as actual history while watching the show.

There's plenty of comedy, and it's quite bawdy, with a rousing yell of the anachronistic and anatopic word "Huzzah!" shouted just about every episode. If you're looking for something a little silly and fun with your costume series, "The Great" might be great for you. There's also a bit of a feminist twist to your usual period pieces, as we watch Catherine grow into her own ruler as a young queen and manipulate her stupid brute of a husband.

Reign

If you like a little bit of a teen twist with your period pieces, check out The CW's "Reign," which tells the story of Mary, Queen of Scots and her early years as the Queen of France. Adelaide Kane stars as the young Mary, whose betrothal to the Prince of France opens the series. It wouldn't be a CW show without a little bit of a love triangle via an invented bastard brother to the Prince. Mary's future mother-in-law, Catherine de Medici (Megan Follows), plots and schemes in a medieval setting. Oh, and there's a little bit of magic and fortune telling via the seer Nostradamus.

"Reign" is, much like "The Great," a bit anti-historical and very anachronistic. The costumes worn by Mary's ladies-in-waiting look more like prom dresses rather than gowns appropriate for 1500s France. But that's what's part of the fun of turning history into a teen soap. Eventually, Mary makes her way back to Scotland, where she starts plotting against her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. If you don't know how Mary's story ends, be prepared for an unhappy ending.

The White Queen/The White Princess/The Spanish Princess

Jodie Comer The White Princess

These Starz dramas are set up as sort of a trilogy. Based on the novels by Philippa Gregory, the author of "The Other Boleyn Girl," they track the creation of the Tudor dynasty from The Wars of the Roses to King Henry VIII. "The White Queen" stars Rebecca Ferguson as Elizabeth Woodville, the young woman who married King Edward IV and became queen before her husband's throne was usurped by his own brother, Richard III. "The White Princess" follows Elizabeth Woodville's daughter, Princess Elizabeth of York ( Jodie Comer ), and her marriage to Henry Tudor in a move that would unite the houses and end the Wars of the Roses. Elizabeth and Henry Tudor's son would become Henry VIII, and his marriage to Catherine of Aragon forms the backbone of "The Spanish Princess."

Binged in order, these shows offer up a pretty decent history lesson of the time before Queen Elizabeth and how the Tudor dynasty was formed. The costumes are glorious, the scheming and devious plots are addicting, and there's a bit of magic and sex too.

Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone

And now for something completely made up! Netflix's "Shadow and Bone," based on the novel series by Leigh Bardugo, is set in a fantasy world with cultural elements similar to our own. The story follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphan who learns to be a cartographer but who discovers that not only is she a "Grisha," someone born with magical gifts, but she may also be the prophesied Sun Summoner who can bring light strong enough to destroy the Shadow Fold, a dark and dangerous territory that divides their nation.

The world of "Shadow and Bone" consists of six countries: Ravka, Fjerda, Shu Han, Kerch, Novyi Zem, and the Wandering Isle. Each of them has similarities to cultures and nations in the real world. For example, Ravka closely resembles Russia, while Fjerda is similar to Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Norway. It's a pretty interesting world, and the magic and mystery, as well as a good old-fashioned good guys vs. bad guys plot, makes for a fun show. "Shadow and Bone" has only had one season on Netflix so far, so it's an easy binge that will leave you wanting the inevitable more to come.

The Magicians

The Magicians

SyFy's "The Magicians" offers up magic in the modern era. Based on the novel of the same name by Lev Grossman, the series' main protagonist is Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph), a typical brainy kid headed for an Ivy League education. But Quentin soon learns that he is actually a magician and is recruited to Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy. There he meets a gaggle of other witches and magicians who come from varying backgrounds and have varying abilities. It's all kind of very Harry Potter, except they're all adults and can have sex. The show can get a bit gory at times, and often even a little scary, adding some horror elements to the magical drama.

And Quentin is just the entryway here into a fantastic ensemble cast of characters. Much like, say, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," there's no lack of magical monsters, fairies, spells, or problems that the show can throw at these young magicians, so despite there being only one novel, SyFy managed to make " The Magicians" five fun seasons long.

Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving is a childhood Halloween favorite. The story tells of Ichabod Crane, a schoolmaster from Connecticut who comes to Sleepy Hollow unaware of its legendary Headless Horseman, the ghost of a beheaded Revolutionary War-era Hessian soldier who haunts the town.

This FOX drama series picks up where the story leaves off, but hundreds of years later. Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) wakes up in 2013 after being struck with the Horseman's severed head. He learns that the Horseman is also in the future, and teams up with Sheriff's Lt. Abigail Mills to prevent the apocalypse. "Sleepy Hollow" gets very Biblical, so brush up on your Revelations. Crane carries around George Washington's Bible while fighting demons and trying to release his wife from purgatory. This is your standard network mystery drama here, so there's limited violence and sex to make it more suitable for general audiences, but it's still a fun, historical, magical show.

Lucifer

Speaking of the Bible, what if the Devil lived in Los Angeles and ran a nightclub? "Lucifer" stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, the DC Comics universe's version of the Devil from Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" comics who then was spun off into his own comic series. Tired of living in Hell and running the damnation of souls, Lucifer gives up his throne, moves to Los Angeles, starts a nightclub, and becomes a consultant for the LAPD. The show follows a procedural setup, with Lucifer using his powers to help detectives solve crimes that may or may not have to do with demons and other supernatural characters.

"Lucifer" is another show that did some network jumping after cancelation. It started out on FOX and has ended up on Netflix, where all six seasons are available for your viewing pleasure. And believe us when we say Lucifer is very concerned with pleasure.

Mercy Street

Mercy Street

Back to reality with some more PBS Masterpiece. While most Masterpiece shows are set in England, this one sails across the pond to America. Set during the Civil War, "Mercy Street" takes place in the Mansion House Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. Being in a central location, the hospital treats both Confederate and Union soldiers in a setup that's sure to cause the two sides to clash. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Mary Phinney, a New England widow who comes to the hospital fully enmeshed in the ideologies of the northern states. Alongside her is Emma Green (Hannah James), whose Confederate family owns the mansion that now houses the hospital. Josh Radnor plays the doctor who heads the hospital.

According to PBS, the drama is based on actual letters from doctors and nurses at the Mansion House Hospital. One of the show's creators, David Zucker, said , "These are rich, personal stories that are based on the real experience of the horror of war combined with the drama, excitement and energy of what it is like to work in a trauma ward, especially given the limited state of medicine at the time. But equally, the series will explore what life was like in this occupied city, for the female nurses—of the North and South—the transient soldiers and the former slaves who were either heading north to freedom, into battle or trying to figure out, like others, what the war would ultimately mean for them."

If you need a little more Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish in your life (or are simply missing those Scottish Highlands), tune in to the travel show, Men in Kilts , which follows the Outlander actors on a roadtrip through Scotland. Along the way, they'll showcase the country's rich history, culture, and traditions.

poldark masterpiece pbs

Consider Poldark the Masterpiece PBS-version of Outlander (minus the time travel): There's a romance at the heart of the story, a smoldering leading man in Ross, and a strong female star in Demelza, but less overt sex and violence. There's also a change of landscape—instead of the Scottish highlands in the 18th century, Poldark is set in Cornwall after the Revolutionary War.

Game of Thrones

Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones

Outlander is sometimes referred to as a "more feminist" Game of Thrones , so it's fitting that the popular HBO series would find a place on this list. Indeed, both shows are set in a time before cell phones or even electricity, and both feature graphic sex and violence. But GOT is fantasy and the tone is quite different from Outlander , so be prepared for that shift.

The Spanish Princess

the spanish princess chalrotte hope

If you're already subscribed to Starz, may we suggest checking out The Spanish Princess ? The beautifully-shot series tells the story of King Henry VIII, but from the perspective of his first wife, Catherine of Aragon . Come for the historical drama, stay for a hunky version of Harry (pre-gout, that is).

the crown olivia colman queen elizabeth

The Crown is a gorgeous period drama, and in seasons three and four, the appeal for Outlander fans only increases, when Tobias Menzies steps into the role of Prince Philip . Sadly, as the show famously recasts its main roles every two seasons, who won't be in any further episodes. In season 5, the Queen's consort is set to be played by actor Jonathan Pryce.

Jenna Coleman as Victoria

Laoghaire MacKenzie is one of the most-hated characters in the Outlander canon, so it will come as a shock to see actress Nell Hudson playing Queen Victoria's dutiful maid Mrs. Skerrett in Victoria . The Masterpiece PBS series about the British monarch's early reign is worth a watch for Hudson's performance, for the ill-fated romance between Victoria and her Albert , and for the gorgeous costumes.

Hair, Face, Photograph, Blond, Beauty, Hairstyle, Portrait, Lip, Portrait photography, Eye,

If the time-travel element is your favorite part of the Outlander series, consider giving Doctor Who a try. The long-running program is a British institution, at this point, and a must-watch for many Anglophiles. The Doc these days is played by actress Jodie Whittaker, which Outlander 's feminist audience will appreciate. Plus, a Doctor Who episodes originally inspired Diana Gabaldon to set the Outlander book series in the Scottish highlands.

turn

In season six, the American revolution will begin to play a role in the plot of Outlander, and as always, the Frasers get caught up in the pivotal historical events. If that time period is intriguing, you may want to go ahead and watch Turn, an AMC show focused on George Washington's spies during the rebellion.

Downton Abbey

downton abbey

It's tough to call yourself a fan of British period drama if you haven't watched Downton Abbey . The popular series chronicles the Crawley family and their household staff through WWI and the early 1920s, but this is hardly a boring history lesson. There's plenty of scandal and intrigue to go around .

The Gilded Age

the gilded age

Similarly, Julian Fellowes's latest period drama, The Gilded Age , might appeal to American fans of Outlander . It takes place in 19th century New York, and as is his forte, Fellowes focuses in on a class divide—this time the one between new money and old.

Vikings

This History Channel series about (you guessed it) vikings in the late 700s, follows the strapping young Norsemen as they try to conquer new lands. Outlander obsessives will enjoy not only the sultry story lines, but also scenes on the battlefield.

Peaky Blinders

peaky blinders

Centering around a gang family in England right after WWI, Peaky Blinders is not particularly similar to Jamie and Claire's time-traveling saga, except in that it's a British period drama, but it will appeal to those Anglophiles in the Outlander audience who love a good story of dramatic love in a violent world.

10 Historical Dramas Like Outlander to Watch While You Wait for Season 7

Survive the Droughtlander with these romance/sci-fi/historical shows

tim.jpg

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, Outlander

Outlander  has it all. At its heart, the beloved Starz series is a sweeping romance set against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion in 1740s Scotland and the American Revolution in the 1770s. But the epic story of Claire ( Caitriona Balfe ) and Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ) is more than just a swoon-worthy history lesson.

Woven into the centuries-spanning, globe-trotting series is just about every genre you can think of, including science fiction, costume drama, witchcraft, and even a little bit of light-hearted comedy. If you can't laugh about time-traveling 200 years into the past and stepping into not one but two wars, what can you laugh at?

In Season 7, Outlander finally faces down the American Revolution — on its own terms. While the series has always been very faithful with much of its historical depictions, it doesn't hurt to cite other sources when learning about real events through popular culture. One of the best series to ever tackle the Revolutionary era is HBO's masterful Emmy-winning miniseries John Adams starring Paul Giamatti as the titular Founding Father and Laura Linney as his wife and frequent council Abigail Adams. The series begins with Adams' involvement in the Boston Massacre and follows his life through the Revolution and into the post-war years when divisions among the founders were just as vicious. Outlander isn't likely to get into the nitty gritty of building a country, but it's an important companion lesson that John Adams can offer to thrilling results.  -Hunter Ingram

Turn: Washington's Spies

Jaime Bell, Turn: Washington's Spies

Jaime Bell, Turn: Washington's Spies

The American Revolution was won on the backs of the men and women who went behind enemy lines and brought back intel to the people commanding armies, a risk well documented by AMC's three-season espionage drama Turn: Washington's Spies . Based on the book Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring by Alexander Rose, the series follows Abraham Woodhull ( Jamie Bell ) as he gets involved with George Washington's Culper Ring of spies. Outlander is often a series that depends on its characters being in the right place at the right time, and Turn is no different. Jamie Fraser is poised to play an increasingly central role in the Revolutionary fighting, but Turn offers exciting insight to the contributions of those far from the battlefield.  -Hunter Ingram

The Time Traveler's Wife

Theo James and Rose Leslie, The Time Traveler's Wife

Theo James and Rose Leslie, The Time Traveler's Wife

It's right there in the title: The Time Traveler's Wife is a time-traveling romance. Game of Thrones ' Rose Leslie stars as Clare Abshire, the titular spouse, whose husband Henry DeTamble ( Theo James ) has a disorder that causes him to travel back and forth through time. He has no control over it, which causes a lot of stress and heartache for both of them. They develop a relationship during Henry's trips to his past, which is is Clare's present, and marry when their timelines converge naturally. The HBO series is based on a best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger that you've probably read if you like Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books. The Time Traveler's Wife got negative reviews and was canceled after one season, but it still managed to win over a small but devoted fanbase that petitioned to get the show renewed so the story could be finished (the single season only covers half of the novel). Maybe you'll join the fandom. The Time Traveler's Wife was developed for TV by Steven Moffat , who also served a stint as the executive producer of the next timey-wimey show on this list.  -Liam Mathews

Doctor Who

Imagine Outlander without kilts. You can't, right? Now say thank you to Doctor Who , because the long-running British sci-fi series about a time-traveling alien practically gift-wrapped those kilts for you. As many fans know, author Diana Gabaldon set the Outlander novels in 18th century Scotland after catching a rerun of a classic Doctor Who episode featuring Jamie McCrimmon ( Frazer Hines ), a Scottish highlander from the 1740s who travels with the Doctor. TV's preeminent kilt hunk Jamie Fraser owes his name and his homeland to Doctor Who (Gabaldon has said only his first name was an intentional homage; the similarity between his last name and Hines' first name is coincidental). But even if Doctor Who weren't a part of Outlander 's history, it would still be on this list: They're both epic time travel dramas. The classic series is a fun watch for fans who want to see how it all began — Jamie was a regular character from 1966 to 1969, appearing alongside  Patrick Troughton 's Second Doctor — while the revival, which debuted in 2005, really steps up the star-crossed romance Outlander fans love, albeit in a less steamy way. This is a family show! - Kelly Connolly

Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey, Bridgerton

Simone Ashley and Jonathan Bailey, Bridgerton

If you're looking for another steamy period piece based on a bestselling novel series, look no further than Bridgerton , Netflix's massively popular romance drama. The series is an adaptation of Julia Quinn's Bridgerton novels, which are set in Regency-era London and follow the high society romantic travails of the Bridgerton siblings. The first season follows debutante Daphne Bridgerton ( Phoebe Dynevor ), the eldest sister, as she falls in love with Simon Basset ( Rege-Jean Page ), a handsome duke with a chip on his shoulder. Season 2 focuses on Anthony ( Jonathan Bailey ), the rakish eldest Bridgerton sibling, and his relationship with Kate Sharma ( Simone Ashley ), his intended's sister. Outlander has a lot of things Bridgerton doesn't — an epic sweep, an even split between historical and romance drama, and violence, to name a few — but if you just love period pieces with modern sensibilities and sexy, swoonworthy romance, make Bridgerton your next binge. -Liam Mathews

The Spanish Princess

Stephanie Levi-John, Charlotte Hope, and Nadia Parkes, The Spanish Princess

Instead of letting your Starz subscription collect dust while you wait for more Outlander , you should check out The Spanish Princess . (There's no time travel in this one, but don't let that deter you.) Based on the novels by Philippa Gregory, the series follows Catherine of Aragon ( Charlotte Hope ), a teen princess and Henry VIII's ( Ruairi O'Connor ) first wife, as she travels to England, briefly marries Henry's brother, and later becomes Queen of England. If you watch Outlander because you love to see people in period clothing yearn and swoon over each other, this show has plenty of romance; if you're in it for the sweeping landscape shots, The Spanish Princess is just as beautiful to look at. But this show is unique for being a rare historical drama told from the woman's perspective, a detail that sets it apart from the pack.  -Allison Picurro

Black Sails

Black Sails

If it's more adventure in the 1700s you're looking for, you might enjoy the Starz drama Black Sails . The series, which ran from 2014 to 2017, is a pirate drama set just before the events of Treasure Island  that follows Robert Louis Stevenson's characters Captain Flint ( Tobey Stephens ), Billy Bones ( Tom Hopper ), "Long John" Silver ( Luke Arnold ), and others as they pillage and pirate in the Caribbean. Though it doesn't have the emerald green fields of the Scottish Highlands, it does have plenty of eye-popping cerulean blue water. Though it doesn't have much epic romance, it doesn't have plenty of bodice-bursting sex. Think of it as Outlander 's naughtier older sibling.

Abigail Spencer, Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter; Timeless

Abigail Spencer, Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter; Timeless

This cult fan favorite from Eric Kripke ( Supernatural , The Boys ) has an appealing main draw: time travel! Each episode, a soldier ( Matt Lanter ), a historian ( Abigail Spencer ), and a tech guru ( Malcolm Barrett ) hop in a top-secret time machine and travel to different time periods in order to stop some bad guys from changing the past (and therefore, the future). Setting it apart from other shows that rip through the time-space continuum, Timeless sets its characters on collision courses with lesser-known but incredibly important historical figures, mostly minority and female figures whose stories aren't told in history books. But that wouldn't be enough to land Timeless on this list. While hopping decades and centuries, a simmering romance stirs between Lanter and Spencer's characters, putting the heart in the show.

A Discovery of Witches

Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, A Discovery of Witches

Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, A Discovery of Witches

For more literary romance in TV form, check out this British fantasy series based on author Deborah Harkness' All Souls Trilogy. A Discovery of Witches follows a pair of academics at Oxford — meaning it also checks off the "set in foggy old Britain" box — who team up to protect a bewitched manuscript from evil outside forces while they unravel its secrets. One of them, Diana ( Teresa Palmer ), is a professor of history at Yale who also happens to be a reluctant witch. The other, Matthew ( Matthew Goode ), is an Oxford biochemistry professor who happens to be a vampire. You get one guess as to whether they fall in forbidden love. Vamps and witches may have a tense history, but chemistry doesn't lie, and Diana and Matthew have it. - Kelly Connolly

Eleanor Tomlinson and Aidan Turner, Poldark

Eleanor Tomlinson and Aidan Turner, Poldark

Spectacular vistas with even more spectacular-looking people is a key element to Outlander 's success (and there's nothing wrong with that!), and it's definitely a combination that Masterpiece's Poldark uses to perfection, too. The PBS/BBC series follows Captain Ross Poldark ( Aidan Turner ), a British soldier in the Revolutionary War who returns home to England after many years away to find his father dead, his estate in shambles, and his true love ( Eleanor Tomlinson ) about to marry another man. The epic, complicated romance will remind you a lot of Outlander , while shots of Turner emerging from the British surf soaking and shirtless will have you clearing space next to your Jamie Fraser poster.

All six seasons of Outlander are available to stream on Starz. Seasons 1-5 are available on Netflix.

A Discovery of Witches (2018-2022)

Midnight at the Pera Palace, Netflix’s criminally underrated Turkish period drama (available with English subtitles or dubbing), is a must-watch for Outlander fans. Poldark (2015-2019)

Demelza and Ross Poldark’s lives are almost as complicated as Jamie and Claire’s — and that’s minus the time travel. Set against the stunning backdrop of Cornwall, Ross returns home after the British are defeated in the American Revolution, only to discover his intended, Elizabeth, has moved on with his cousin and his father has died. Virtually penniless but still a nobleman by rights, Ross works to revive his father’s derelict mine and attempts not to fall for his young maid, Demelza. And that’s just Season 1.

The English (2022)

Emily Blunt stars in this brutal miniseries that doesn’t shy away from the dark side of American history. Shows Like Outlander You Definitely Need To See

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan in Outlander

Often when we think of time travel stories, they feel like a fun little jaunt, a brief adventure from which one can easily return. What would it really be like to make a life for yourself in a time that is not your own? "Outlander," based on a series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, explores such a prospect. In it, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) is sent back in time while exploring an ancient stone circle on her honeymoon, traveling from the 1940s to the mid-18th century in an instant.

She exchanges her relatively independent life as a nurse in post-war Britain for the wild landscape of the Scottish Highlands, where she is in near-constant danger. It's there that she meets Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a man with whom she has a fiery connection almost immediately (For most fans, the relationship between the two is one of the main reasons for watching the show).

But "Outlander" is far from the only television show on the air to explore time travel and historical settings. And if you're a fan of that series, it might just be worth checking out some of the other offerings below.

Naomi Battrick, Sophie Rundle, and Niamh Walsh on Jamestown

Although "Outlander" begins its long journey in Scotland, the characters we know and love eventually travel across the seas in search of a fresh start in the New World. In its depiction of colonial America, we can see a lot of similarities with another historical drama, "Jamestown." Initially airing on Sky One in the UK (and later on PBS in the United States), "Jamestown" takes place a handful of years after the initial founding of the American colony in the early 1600s. It follows the lives of a group of women who have made the long and hazardous journey across the Atlantic to meet an uncertain fate: They have agreed to marry the men in Jamestown who have paid for their passage.

Made by the same production company that brought us "Downton Abbey," it's unsurprising that "Jamestown" has a tendency towards soap opera qualities, and probably skips on historical accuracy more often than not. But it's a fun watch, with plenty of characters that make audiences emotionally attached far more quickly than you might expect.

Lost in Austen

Fitzwilliam Darcy holding a teletubby

"Outlander" may have a post-modern approach to the historical romance, what with the early introduction of time travel and such, but it never verges on meta territory quite like "Lost in Austen." Jemima Rooper plays Amanda, a modern Londoner who is obsessed with the works of Jane Austen, especially "Pride and Prejudice." So it's rather providential that one day, she discovers a portal into the attic of the fictional Bennet family hidden in her flat's bathroom. When she steps through it, she doesn't venture into the 18th century as Claire from "Outlander" does: She enters into a fictional version of the Georgian era, as gently satirized by Austen centuries ago.

Needless to say, she doesn't quite fit in. Despite every effort to follow the plotline of "Pride and Prejudice," her presence can't help but upend matters for all the characters involved — especially Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy (Elliot Cowan) and Charles Bingley (Tom Mison), both of whom find themselves smitten with her unconventional manners. A thorough reevaluation of "Pride and Prejudice," "Lost in Austen" is a silly ode to the generations of Austen fans who have long fantasized about interacting with her now iconic characters.

Sleepy Hollow

Ichabod and Abbie looking concerned

Traveling back in time to the 18th century is disorienting enough: But how would a colonial-era man grapple with the concept of the modern world? Fox's fanciful reimagining of Washington Irving's classic novella "Sleepy Hollow" addresses just such a hypothetical. In it, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) is not murdered by the Headless Horseman, but sent forward in time to 21st-century Sleepy Hollow. There, he teams up with a Sleepy Hollow police officer, Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), who are powerfully bonded to one another. In addition to learning the ins and outs of modern society (his reaction to both donuts and sales tax is delightful), he and Abbie will serve a deeper purpose — fighting to thwart the Headless Horseman and avert a biblical End of Days.

"Sleepy Hollow" ran for four seasons on Fox, although, to be honest, it loses its way fairly early into the series' run, faltering completely when the creators make the inexplicable decision to break up the dream team and write Nicole Beharie off the show. But for the first season or two, "Sleepy Hollow" is a delightfully frothy supernatural show that combines demon-fighting with the endlessly endearing "fish out of water" trope as Crane acclimates himself to the modern world.

Find Me In Paris

Lena and Henri holding hands

If you want viewers to develop an all-consuming love for the time travel fantasy, you've got to hook them while they're young. "Find Me in Paris" is a teen dramedy that stars Jessica Lord as a Russian ballerina who is training at the Opéra de Paris in 1905, before being unceremoniously transported to modern day Paris. Although she is initially eager to return home to her native time, she quickly becomes attached to her new surroundings (and, predictably, her handsome new dance partner Max, played by Rory J. Saper.)

What begins as a fairly straightforward fantasy story eventually takes on more traditional science fiction elements, as the narrative expands to include a more complex web of time travelers. "Find Me In Paris" is perhaps not what you might call historically accurate, and its low production values make the show look a little silly at times. But it was evidently popular enough to have been renewed for three seasons, wrapping up its series run in 2020.

Jonas standing outside cave in Dark

When you start hopping from decade to decade all willy-nilly, the natural timeline begins to resemble a corkscrew more than anything else. "Dark" plays with the ceaseless interconnections of characters who have traveled from one generation to another, weaving a complicated but endlessly fascinating web of intrigue. It all begins with the mysterious disappearance of a young boy named Mikkel in a small German town, where the frantic efforts to find him only reveal more secrets.

The town, it seems, features a peculiar little wormhole that has been transporting its citizens backwards and forwards through time for generations. The great success of "Dark" is that it somehow manages to stop just short of total incomprehensibility. It keeps you engaged throughout all the twists and turns, and its mysteries reward attentive viewers for their patience. "Dark" ran for three seasons on Netflix, the show's first German-language television show, before coming to a conclusion in 2020.

The Paradise

Denise Lovett awed by The Paradise

When Claire arrives in 18th century Scotland on "Outlander," she's out of sync with the people around her, very much a woman out of time. Denise Lovett (Joanna Vanderham), on "The Paradise," is not so much out of her time as she is ahead of it. A country girl who moves to the big city in 1875 to find a better life for herself, Lovett is full of ingenuity and promise. She gets a job working as a salesgirl at The Paradise, a glittering example of England's early department store.

There, she proves herself to be quick on her feet and inventive, attracting the attention of the owner of The Paradise, lonely widower John Moray (Emun Elliott.) He is drawn to her promise and natural talents more than anything else, and the most compelling part of the show is watching the two of them reconcile their roles as lovers and business partners: He imagines her gifts put to use in support of his business endeavors, and she can't imagine anything less fulfilling than constantly standing in the shadow of his genius.

Ross Poldark shirtless on Cornish beach

If you, like many others, are interested in "Outlander" for its male heroes brooding against the wild backdrops of remote historical Great Britain, "Poldark" may just be right up your street. It stars Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark, who returns to his native Cornwall in the aftermath of the American Revolution only to find his father's mining business in dire straits and his girlfriend engaged to another man. Not exactly the homecoming that every man dreams of.

And even though he quickly finds love with the fiery Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson), storm clouds seem to follow Poldark around, as he perpetually bounces from one grave misfortune to the next. So there's always cause for some pensive brooding atop the rugged cliffsides of Cornwall. "Poldark" ran on BBC One for five seasons, before bringing its troubled narrative to a close in 2019. It was almost universally well-received , with sumptuous visuals and a stirring romance that would prove an unbeatable combination.

James Franco and Sarah Gadon lock eyes

Ending up in a different time is serious business: You are a thing out of place, and every action could have dire consequences that threaten the integrity of time itself. "Outlander" touches on this — Claire knows implicitly, for example, that there are certain events she can't risk interfering with, even if she would want to. But "11.22.63" makes this inherent conflict its bread and butter.

James Franco plays a washed up English teacher who is sent back in time on a mission: To prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He arrives in 1960, presumably enough time to establish himself and orchestrate a workable plan as the clock ticks down to November 1963, but also enough time for his mere presence to cause an endless series of unintended consequences. This creates an unbearable dramatic tension, watching him tread gently, ever-mindful of stepping on butterflies. "11.22.63" is one of the more successful Stephen King television adaptations, with its eight-episode run giving it enough breathing room to weave an appropriately complex yarn.

Hailee Steinfeld as Emily Dickinson upset

Whereas the sense of modernity that "Outlander" has comes largely from Claire's forward-thinking presence, "Dickinson" is a historical comedy that almost seems to be post-modern in its approach. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Emily Dickinson, the famously reclusive poet of 19th century New England. But this isn't the Emily Dickinson that you see in literary textbooks, glum and morose. Here, she's vibrant, imaginative, and desperately out of place amongst her family and society at large. Not to mention the fact that she's secretly in love with her best friend Sue Gilbert (Ella Hunt), who inconveniently happens to be romantically involved with Emily's brother, Austin (Adrian Blake Enscoe).

"Dickinson" is a historical coming-of-age story, taking the black and white imagery of a long-dead writer and making her daily tribulations feel surprisingly contemporary. Featuring a bold cast of surprising guest stars that include John Mulaney, Jason Mantzoukas, Billy Eichner, Nick Kroll, Chloe Fineman, and even Wiz Khalifa as Death, "Dickinson" is unlike any other historical television show on the air.

Lucy Preston, Wyatt Logan, and Rufus Carlin taking cover

Claire's time-traveling journey in "Outlander" isn't just a one-and-done thing; both she and several other key characters possess the ability to travel through time under certain circumstances, and do so on a not irregular basis. But they're not flitting through time anywhere near as often as the characters on "Timeless," whose attempts to stop a malevolent force from altering history see them visit Nazi Germany, the Salem Witch Trials, and nearly everywhere in between.

"Timeless" stars Abigail Spencer as Lucy Preston, a historian who serves as an integral part of this time-traveling team. She is flanked by U.S. Army Delta Force operative Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter) and programmer Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett) — and if you're noticing a pattern with their names, yes, the "Bill and Ted" homage is entirely intentional. Although "Timeless" was canceled after its first season, fan support was such that the network eventually reversed their decision, giving the show a second season and an extended two-part finale to wrap things up.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke

Miss Scarlet and the Duke at desk

One of the key struggles that Claire faces in "Outlander" is adjusting to attitudes towards women in the 18th century, and the restrictions placed on them. Although "Miss Scarlet and The Duke" takes place nearly two centuries later, the characters still grapple with many of the same issues. Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) is a young woman raised by her father to have powers of observation and detective skills that would almost rival Sherlock Holmes. When he dies, she is determined to keep his detective agency afloat.

But there's just one problem: It's Victorian England, and no one believes that a woman has any business working as a private investigator. It's only through her grit and a very convenient friendship with a Detective Inspector of Scotland Yard, William Wellington (Stuart Martin), that she has any hope of succeeding. "Miss Scarlet and The Duke" falls very much in line with the typical period fare we see produced by the BBC and exported to PBS in America, but Eliza's pluck and the chemistry between the two lead characters make it a charming, if conventional, affair.

The White Queen

Max Irons and Rebecca Ferguson embracing

Starz has developed quite the roster of royal historical dramas, and "The White Queen" was the very first in their lineup. Based on a novel by Philippa Gregory, it follows Elizabeth Woodville (Rebecca Ferguson) and her ascendency to the throne of England through her passionate romance and resulting marriage to King Edward IV (Max Irons, the son of Jeremy Irons in one of his first starring roles). Woodville comes from no high rank, and her relationship with Edward causes hostilities to break out with members of his family. His cousin the Earl of Warwick, also known as the Kingmaker (James Frain), is most aggrieved, furious that such an important decision could be made without consulting him. The conflict here would define English politics for generations.

"The White Queen" surely takes its liberties with historical fact, but that's never an issue. We are too drawn to the electric chemistry between Ferguson and Irons, as well as the powerful performances from a strong supporting cast, to care.

Pillars of the Earth

Eddie Redmayne and Hayley Atwell in Pillars of the Earth

If there's one thing novelist Ken Follett has always been good at, it's sweeping historical epics. "Pillars of the Earth" is a BBC adaptation of one of his most famous novels, the sprawling story centered around the building of an English cathedral in the 12th century. It covers a staggering amount of territory, from the battles between the heirs of King Henry I for the throne of England to the relatively smaller conflicts that break out within the town of Kingsbridge.

"Pillars of the Earth" is a famously complicated book, with so many characters that it probably needs a glossary to keep them all straight. But the triumph of this adaptation is how well it streamlines the narrative, allowing the story to unfold over several episodes in easily digestible bites. It features an impressive cast of stars, chief among them Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell (in a rare non-villain role), Donald Sutherland, Matthew Macfadyen, Hayley Atwell, and Eddie Redmayne, whose work here is career-defining. It's a lush historical epic that sweeps audiences up with the depth and richness of its story.

Ragnar Lothbrok and son Bjork

Part of the appeal of "Outlander" is the rugged terrain of an untamed Scotland, and "Vikings" has this quality in spades. Set in the early medieval era, it chronicles the legends of Viking hero Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Himmel), whose wars of conquest in Anglo-Saxon England and across all of Scandinavia would make his name known throughout Europe. The show begins with the sacking of an English monastery, beginning the complicated relationship between Ragnar and an English monk named Athelstan (George Blagden) that would define "Vikings" at its best.

In between action set pieces, it explores the intersection between Viking culture and early Christianity in a way that is more engaging than one might expect. "Vikings" aired for nearly its entire series run on History, before airing the second half of its 6th season directly on Amazon Prime. It even earned a spinoff with "Vikings: Valhalla," produced by Netflix and exploring the history of the Vikings a century after the events of the original series.

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult in conversation

The Russian aristocracy in the late 1700s was the very picture of excess, and therefore incredibly easy to satirize. "The Great" takes a bold swing at the chaotic and frequently cruel nature of life in Russian court, by focusing on a young Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) upon her initial arrival from Germany and marriage to Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). She has the highest of hopes for a happy wedded life, but those are immediately dashed, and she does not spend a great deal of time mourning them: Instead, she plots. Catherine realizes that if Peter cannot usher Russia into a more enlightened age, she will have to — with or without him.

"The Great" features a sharp, brutally frank sense of humor that finds little delight in subtlety. It milks the inherent absurdities and backwardness of the Russian aristocracy for all they're worth, creating a surprisingly fresh and modern take on the almost comical viciousness of life at court in the 18th century.

What it lacks in time travel, it makes up for in scandals, backstabbing, and forbidden romances—all the makings of a great historical romance.

The Great  (2020-present)

The Great — "Once Upon A Time" - Episode 310 — Catherine meets court scientist Nikolai, who announces a comet is about to pass through Russia. She uses this phenomenon to her advantage and in the face of some huge challenges, unearths a new side of her leadership. Catherine (Elle Fanning), shown.

Christopher Raphael/Hulu

If you loved watching Claire and Jaime mingle with the high society of the 1700s, The Great will be right up your alley. This Primetime Emmy-nominated comedy series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great, a royal forced into an arranged marriage with Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). When she refuses to obey her husband's repressive rules, she concocts a plan to kill him. While Catherine the Great was definitely real, the series' events are entirely fictionalized—and entirely bonkers.

The Last Kingdom  (2015-2022)

Peri Baumeister, Mark Rowley, and Arnas Fedaravicius in The Last Kingdom (2015)

Based on Bernard Cornwell's best-selling novels, The Last Kingdom takes us back to the ninth century to a young man named Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), whose kingdom is under attack by the Norse invaders. While the series goes back in time way further than Outlander , the intense fight for one's land and heritage makes it a must-watch for lovers of thrilling historical dramas.

The Tudors  (2007-2010)

Jonathan Rhys Meyers in The Tudors (2007)

If you're looking for a little more glitz and glamour, The Tudors does not disappoint. Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars as King Henry VIII, the notorious royal who has a penchant for beheading anyone—wife or not—who gets in his way. This lavish series follows his reign from 1509 to 1547 and all the scandals, love affairs, and drama that come with it.

Black Sails  (2014-2017)

Toby Stephens and Frans Steyn in Black Sails (2014)

David Bloomer/Starz Entertainment

Treasure Island fans, rejoice! Black Sails takes us back to the golden age of piracy in the 18th-century Caribbean. The series follows Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his crew as they try to protect their ships from rival pirates, English navies, and a host of other unexpected obstacles. With its swashbuckling action and complicated characters, Black Sails is the perfect blend of historical drama and adventure.

Dickinson  (2019-2021)

Hailee Steinfeld in 'Dickinson'

Much of the renowned poet Emily Dickinson's life remains a mystery, but this hilarious and poignant series attempts to piece together what happened before she became one of America's most celebrated writers. Hailee Steinfeld stars as an edgy Dickinson who is determined to pursue her identity and writing career despite the socially repressive times of the mid-1800s. You'll find a lot more comedy than your typical historical drama, so be prepared for some humorous modern-day anachronisms.

Bridgerton  (2020-present)

Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton in Bridgerton (2020)

You can't have a collection of period dramas without mentioning Bridgerton —the Netflix series that quickly became an overnight sensation. Set in Regency-era London, the colorful drama follows the lives of high society's elite as they navigate lavish balls and even more lavish scandals. Filled with excellent costumes, beautiful locations, and plenty of romance to satisfy your Outlander -hungry heart, Bridgerton is a must-watch.

Sanditon  (2019-2023)

Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Rose Williams in Episode #3.5 (2023)

WGBH Educational Foundation

Jane Austen is widely considered the queen of historical romance, so it's no surprise that her adapted works make for some excellent viewing. Sanditon is based on the author's final—and incomplete—novel about the impulsive Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), who moves to the fishing village of Sanditon and gets swept up in its many secrets, rivalries, and romances.

Vikings  (2013-2020)

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Katheryn Winnick, and Michelle O'Flaherty in Vikings (2013)

History Channel

Set in the early 11th century, Vikings tells the story of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a young farmer who dreams of becoming a legendary Norse warrior. This dark and gritty drama follows his quest to explore new lands and lead the Viking people against their enemies. While it's more about exploring foreign countries than time-traveling, Outlander fans will love the epic battles and intense rivalries between characters.

Poldark (2015-2019)

Eleanor Tomlinson and Aidan Turner in Poldark (2015)

If you watch Outlander more for the heart-pumping romance than the historical elements, Poldark should be on your radar. Set in 18th-century Cornwall, this British drama follows Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) as he returns home from the Revolutionary War to find that his father is dead and his beloved is engaged to another man. With its lush landscapes, passionate romances, and thrilling political plots, Poldark will keep your heart racing until the very end.

The Essex Serpent  (2022)

Claire Danes and Caspar Griffiths in The Essex Serpent (2022)

This adaptation of Sarah Perry's novel contains a little more magic than the others on this list. It follows a woman named Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) who moves to an Essex village in 1893 to investigate a mythical creature that may be lurking in its waters. This captivating drama blends romance and fantasy into one unique—and very British—historical story.

Timeless  (2016-2018)

Abigail Spencer and Matt Lanter in Timeless (2016)

NBC/Sergei Bachlakov

We couldn't create a list of Outlander -esque shows without having at least one time-travel drama. Timeless follows a group of unlikely heroes—a historian (Abigail Spencer), a soldier (Matt Lanter), and a scientist (Malcolm Barrett)—as they race against the clock to find a stolen time machine. They must travel through the past to prevent a mysterious criminal from altering history and, of course, save the world.

6 shows like 'Outlander' to watch while you wait for season 7, part 2

  • "Outlander" is currently on a midseason hiatus with no return date set.
  • Fans will probably enjoy similar time travel dramas like "A Discovery of Witches" and "Timeless."
  • Historical romances like "Miss Scarlet and the Duke" and "Poldark" might also help fill the void.

Insider Today

As fans wait for " Outlander " to return, many are searching for similar shows to enjoy.

Based on a series of best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon , the series follows Claire Randall ( Caitríona Balfe ), a former World War II military nurse who, while on a trip to Scotland in 1945, finds herself transported back in time to the 18th century.

There, she meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ), a dashing Highland warrior. Together the two find themselves swept up in many historical events, from the Jacobite rising to the American Revolutionary War.

Given its captivating romance, fascinating political backdrops, and, of course, the inclusion of time travel, it's not hard to see why audiences can't get enough of the show, which recently began a  midseason hiatus.

As the Droughtlander sets in, Insider has rounded up six shows we think fans of " Outlander " might enjoy.

"A Discovery of Witches" features time travel as well as a pulse-pounding forbidden romance.

When she finds a mystical manuscript at her university's library, she's forced back into the magical world and reluctantly teams up with her fellow professor — and vampire — Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode) as they try to keep the manuscript safe.

Why you'll like it:  People have long drawn parallels between the two series and their respective fandoms, so we would really recommend giving it a try. Diana and Matthew's us-against-the-world relationship will have you hooked.

"A Discovery of Witches" is streaming on AMC+ and Max .

"Miss Scarlet and the Duke" features a headstrong female lead who defies expectations.

Faced with the decision to marry for financial security or make her own path, she decides to continue her father's detective agency, where she finds an unexpected companion in Scotland Yard Inspector William "Duke" Wellington (Stuart Martin).

Why you'll like it: Claire's outspoken and fiercely independent nature is what made "Outlander" fans fall in love with her story in the first place, and you'll find plenty of parallels in Eliza Scarlet.

"Miss Scarlet and the Duke" is streaming on PBS and Prime Video .

For more time-traveling adventures paired with a good dose of romance, check out "Timeless."

time travel tv shows like outlander

Summary: "Timeless" follows history professor Lucy Preston (Abigail Spencer), scientist Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett), and soldier Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter) as they band together as an unlikely trio to attempt to stop a time-traveling criminal from changing the course of American history.

Why you'll like it:  Time travel? Check. The occasional cameo from important historical figures? Check. A simmering romance between two very hot leads? Check! While "Timeless" may technically fall under the category of sci-fi, rather than fantasy, we don't think "Outlander" fans will have any issues getting on board with it.

"Timeless" is streaming on Hulu .

The chemistry between the two leads in "Poldark" could give Jamie and Claire a run for their money.

time travel tv shows like outlander

Summary: British Army Captain Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) is destroyed when he returns home to England after fighting in the American Revolution to find his father has died, the family estate is in ruins, and his childhood sweetheart has married his cousin.

Why you'll like it: Like "Outlander," this series is based on a series of best-selling novels and is filled with romance, intrigue, and drama. It also has plenty of steamy scenes between Ross and his flame-haired love interest Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson).

"Poldark" is streaming Prime Video .

"Black Sails" is a little more male-focused, but offers plenty for "Outlander" fans.

time travel tv shows like outlander

Summary: Positioned as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," this Michael Bay-produced drama follows the fictional Captain Flint as well as a handful of legendary pirates from history on the debauched paradise of New Providence Island.

Why you'll like it : This swashbuckling series feels very reminiscent of Jamie and Claire's short-lived seafaring adventure in the West Indies back in season three, so if you find yourself rewatching that, then this is the series for you. Not to mention, the immersive world of the series will have you hooked.

"Black Sails" is streaming on Starz .

"Turn: Washington's Spies" is for all the "Outlander" fans who have been loving Jamie and Claire's involvement in the American Revolution.

time travel tv shows like outlander

Why you'll like it: This is one for all the "Outlander" fans who have been drawn in by the colonial intrigue of the last few seasons, and want to see more of Benedict Arnold's story following his brief appearance in season seven of "Outlander."

Why Outlander fans would like it: Like any good historical drama on a premium cable channel, The Tudors is full of the romance and political intrigue that would later draw fans to Outlander . Why Outlander fans would like it: I know! This is a show centered around a mystery, so it seems nothing like Outlander , but let me tell you, once you get through the Defending Jacob ending and see how fully Laurie and Andy have supported each other and tried to do everything they can to keep each other and their kid safe, you will understand that this is another sometimes hard-to-watch drama about sticking together through extreme challenges.

Why Outlander fans would like it: Sanditon is filled with aspects that Outlander viewers already enjoy, as it’s a fish out of water story with sumptuous period details, frequently tricky characters, a lot of very swoon-worthy romance, and all of the drama that goes with it. Sanditon Season 3 will air in 2023 , so this is the perfect time to catch up!

The second and final season turns its attention to the power struggle following Caesar's death.

Why Outlander fans would like it: Fans of Outlander 's attention to historical details will appreciate the high production value of this HBO drama. Not to be outdone, the show also has lots of political maneuvering, and features some history-based battles, steamy scenes, and some deeply emotional romantic relationships.

a discovery of witches season 3 teresa palmer diana bishop

A Discovery Of Witches (Amazon)

Why Outlander fans would like it: Aside from featuring a steamy, nearly insta-love romance between our leads, A Discovery of Witches is also filled with dangerous characters and situations, lots of mystery, has a female protagonist who’s thrust into a world she knows next to nothing about, features a bit of time travel, and a main couple who will do literally anything to keep their partner out of harm’s way and to stay together for the long haul, regardless of how hazardous it might be.

Hopefully, this list will help you find some sexy and exciting new-to-you shows that will fill the massive void left in your heart until Outlander Season 7 finally hits Starz!

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.

18 Shows to Watch If You Love "Outlander"

time travel tv shows like outlander

When " Outlander " first debuted on Starz in 2014, the romantic epic series was a bit of a risk. Based on a bestselling series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, the show didn't quite fit neatly into any one box. It's an adventure, a historical and political drama, a family saga, a steamy romance , and a time-travel fantasy, all at once — that's a lot of ground for any one show to cover!

As it turns out, fans turned up in droves, turning "Outlander" into a bona fide phenomenon and turning its stars into recognizable faces. As the seasons go on, there's still plenty of story to cover, with Gabaldon's book series not even finished yet. Spanning decades of historical events and fictional drama, the show still manages to keep its focus on its main characters and on the love story between Jamie and Claire that anchors the whole thing. That character focus, more than anything else, is what keeps people tuning in year after year.

The biggest problem with being an "Outlander" fan is the "Droughtlander," or the long waiting periods between each season of the show. Fortunately, there are plenty of other shows that feature the same things we love about "Outlander" that you can watch to fill the time. Whether you're looking for a heart-stopping romance or a high-stakes historical adventure, start one of these shows the next time you're missing "Outlander."

Shows Like "Outlander": "Black Sails"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Black Sails"

The characters of "Outlander" struggle on and off with British and other authorities over the course of decades. They definitely have that in common with the pirates of "Black Sails" (although they might not totally approve of these pirates' methods!). Set during the golden age of piracy, "Black Sails" is technically meant as a prequel to the iconic "Treasure Island," but it goes far beyond that. In this version, Captain Flint is at the height of his power, searching for treasure while also fighting for the survival of the pirate way of life against "civilized" people who paint them as villains. These aren't your friendly "Pirates of the Caribbean" swashbucklers, but darker, more adult characters — perfect for "Outlander" fans looking for that mix of adventure, danger, and romance.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Bridgerton"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Bridgerton"

If you watch "Outlander" more for the epic romance than the historical adventures, then "Bridgerton" should definitely be on your watch list if it isn't already. Like "Outlander," "Bridgerton" is based on a lengthy series of novels that put the relationships between characters front and center. At the center of it all is the Bridgerton family, a wealthy family in the glamorous "ton" of Regency-era British society. The first season centers on eldest daughter Daphne, as her fake dating arrangement with charming duke Simon turns into real love. Season two shifts the focus to her eldest brother, Anthony, head of the family since his father's death and now on the search for a wife himself — with results that surprise him and everyone else.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Call the Midwife"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Call the Midwife"

If you wish we'd gotten to spend more time with Claire working in the medical field of postwar England, "Call the Midwife" could be what you're looking for. The long-running series begins in the late 1950s, following a group of nuns, nurses, and midwives working in an impoverished, working-class part of London. Like Claire, they often face prejudice and assumptions about their abilities because of their gender, but they prove themselves capable time and time again. As the seasons progress, the show eventually moves into the 1960s, where big social changes — especially in the lives of women — impact the characters both personally and professionally.

Shows Like "Outlander": "The Crown"

Shows Like "Outlander": "The Crown"

"The Crown" definitely is a quieter, more introspective show than the big adventures of "Outlander," but both shows have a lot to say about power, changing times, and family. Starting in the 1950s, "The Crown" traces the reign of Queen Elizabeth II over several decades. From her early days as an unexpectedly young queen trying to find her footing to her later years as an established monarch and matriarch, the show follows her and her family as they struggle to feel relevant in an increasingly modern world, often self-sabotaging along the way. There aren't the epic, literal battles seen on "Outlander," but that doesn't mean the stakes are lower.

Shows Like "Outlander": "A Discovery of Witches"

Shows Like "Outlander": "A Discovery of Witches"

Looking for that perfect blend of fantasy and romance? "A Discovery of Witches" has you covered. Like "Outlander," it centers on the forbidden and passionate love story between a man from the past and a woman from the present day. Only this time, the woman, Diana, is a professor who discovers her connections to an ancient line of witches, and the man, Matthew, is a centuries-old vampire. As the two slowly learn to trust each other, they try to untangle mysteries surrounding the rivalry between magical species and the apparent weakening of magic itself. Yes, time travel gets involved at one point, but just like "Outlander," it really is the central romance that holds everything together.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Downton Abbey"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Downton Abbey"

There's considerably less dirt, blood, and grime on "Downton Abbey" than there is on "Outlander," that's for sure. If you're looking for an epic historical drama but with more of an elegant, glamorous feel, "Downton" is the way to go. Starting in 1912 and following the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants through nearly 15 years, the show covers an era of immense change for everyone. From the horrors of World War I to the glittering ballrooms of the 1920s, it's a sweeping story that touches on every aspect of the characters' lives. There's even an ongoing hospital storyline — Claire would definitely approve.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Doctor Who"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Doctor Who"

While "Outlander" uses its time travel sparingly, "Doctor Who" is all about that adventuring through time and space. The iconic sci-fi series centers on the Doctor, an ancient alien being who "regenerates" into a new body at the end of each "lifetime" and travels throughout the universe with some human (and occasionally nonhuman) friends. While that might sound a little too much like silly sci-fi for "Outlander" fans, rest assured that there's plenty of adventure, romance, and big emotions alongside the goofy and sometimes scary. After all, the very premise of the show means that nothing lasts forever and the Doctor always has to leave beloved companions behind. If you don't cry at least once, you're not paying attention.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Game of Thrones"

On the surface, it might seem like the only thing that "Game of Thrones" has in common with "Outlander" is its status as a mega-popular hit series from a premium cable network. Look a little closer, though, and there are plenty of reasons that fans of one might love the other. Both are massive, epic dramas with sprawling casts and a huge storytelling scope. Both are full of intrigue and adventure, with danger that doesn't always pull away at the last second. They're also both very emotional at times, absolutely unafraid to break your heart. If you're looking for the adventure of "Outlander" but with more fantasy (and less romance focus), this is the choice for you.

Shows Like "Outlander": "The Great"

Shows Like "Outlander": "The Great"

Hulu's outrageous, quirky, anachronistic comedy might not seem like it has a ton in common with "Outlander," but we think there's a lot there that "Outlander" fans will love. Both shows have a strong, complicated woman at the center of the story, surrounded by political intrigues, high personal stakes, and frequent life-or-death decisions. Here, that woman is Catherine, a naive young princess who arrives in Russia as a bride only to discover that her new husband, Tsar Peter, is a self-absorbed, casually cruel narcissist. Frustrated by the way he rules, Catherine begins to think that maybe, just maybe, she could do a better job herself. With the help of a motley crew of allies, Catherine takes the risk to take power and become the legendary Catherine the Great.

Of all the TV show options out there, "Poldark" is probably as close as it gets to the vibes of "Outlander." After being presumed dead during the American Revolution, Ross Poldark returns home to his estate in England only to find that the life he left behind has changed irrevocably. As he tries to rebuild his life, help the villagers, and fend off the plans of greedy businessmen, he falls for a headstrong maid, Demelza. Their romance is far from smooth sailing, however, and the show follows them and the people around them over many years of fights, betrayals, reunions, and big decisions that change lives forever.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Reign"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Reign"

How about a slightly different perspective on the historic quest for Scottish independence? "Reign" presents a (heavily fictionalized) version of the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Descended from the Tudor royal line, Mary's journey starts out when she arrives in France as the betrothed of the heir to the throne. Through epic romances, terrifying betrayals, and razor's-edge court politics, Mary transforms from naive princess to a steely would-be queen. As her story eventually brings her back to her native Scotland and into conflict with her English cousin, Queen Elizabeth, Mary is faced with difficult choices and a historical fate that cannot be avoided.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Sanditon"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Sanditon"

A little rougher around the edges than your typical Jane Austen adaptation, "Sanditon" is a great choice for "Outlander" fans looking for more period romance, but fewer gruesome battles. Charlotte is a young woman whose life changes forever when she comes to the aid of the Parkers, a wealthy couple whose carriage overturns near her village. In gratitude, the Parkers invite her to spend a summer with them in Sanditon, a growing beach community that their family is trying to build into a seaside resort destination. While there, Charlotte befriends the heiress Georgiana and clashes with Sidney, one of the Parker brothers. There's definitely enough drama and major heartbreak for any "Outlander" fan.

Curious for more of the backstory about the conflict between England and Scotland? You'll get a little bit of the history — albeit with some soapy fictionalizations — in "The Spanish Princess." The series focuses on Catherine of Aragon, the princess of the title who comes from Spain to marry Arthur, the heir to the English throne. As we all know, though, Catherine's life won't go the way she has planned, but she's determined to fulfill her fate of becoming queen at any cost. The second season spends a little more time in Scotland, as Catherine's sister-in-law takes charge of Scottish forces and marshals support for a conflict that will stretch, on and off, for centuries.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Timeless"

Time-traveling adventures? Check. A memorable ensemble of characters with an unbreakable bond? Check. Big mysteries and sweeping romance? Check. All of these things you love about "Outlander" are a big part of "Timeless," a sci-fi drama with a historical twist. Historian Lucy, soldier Wyatt, and scientist Rufus are the mismatched team sent through time in pursuit of a madman who has stolen a time machine and intends to destroy history. As they unravel a much bigger conspiracy than they were expecting, they form a tight-knit bond, help each other overcome past traumas, and cross paths with an amazing (and sometimes hilarious) array of famous figures from years past.

Shows Like "Outlander": "The Tudors"

Shows Like "Outlander": "The Tudors"

The elegant court life of "The Tudors" may be a far cry from how the Frasers and their friends live, but the life-and-death stakes are the same. When "The Tudors" begins, Henry VIII is a vibrant, if reckless, young king determined to expand England's power at any cost. His marriage to his Spanish wife, Catherine, falters as he blames her for their lack of a son, and his determination to father an heir becomes an all-consuming obsession. Like "Outlander," the show follows its characters over years and even decades, covering major historical events as well as the personal lives of its main characters.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Turn"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Turn"

As "Outlander" moves through the years, the focus shifts from Scottish rebellions to the era of the American Revolution. That's where "Turn" is set, too, taking its inspiration from true stories of one of the most important spy rings in Revolution-era America. The show tells a fictionalized version of the real story of the Culper Ring, a group of spies reporting to George Washington whose work was instrumental in turning the war in favor of the Americans. As the spies work to gather intelligence and outwit the "redcoats," they also face personal conflicts and betrayals among themselves. It's a great option for "Outlander" fans in search of another historical drama full of battles, intrigues, romance, and twists.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Versailles"

Was the Paris arc one of your favorite storylines in "Outlander"? If it was, then you'll definitely love "Versailles"! Set during the reign of Louis XIV, the show traces his rise from inexperienced king to all-powerful monarch. As Louis struggles to keep control of his country, his court, and even his own family, he finds himself at the center of manipulations and plots from every corner. In an attempt to reestablish his own power over his court and his country, he makes a shocking decision to move his entire court from the outskirts of Paris to an old royal hunting lodge that he's renovating: Versailles.

Shows Like "Outlander": "Vikings"

Shows Like "Outlander": "Vikings"

For a similar vibe to "Outlander," just minus the time travel and set several centuries earlier, "Vikings" is the way to go. The show spans multiple generations of Viking warriors and leaders, but starts out with a twist on the Norse legendary hero Ragnar Lothbrok. Starting out as a poor farmer, Ragnar rises as a notable warrior and eventually becomes a king and the father of future heroes. The show eventually dives deeper into the many factions around Europe at the time, much like all the political and factional challenges that "Outlander" occasionally dips into. It's not just politics, though — there's plenty of emotional character drama too.

Based on the bestselling novels by Diana Gabaldon , Outlander has been on the air since 2014. The fifth season, set in colonial North America, premieres on Starz on February 16 , bringing Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie ( Sam Heughan ) a few years closer to the American Revolution.

When the 12-episode season is over, we'll be stranded in a world without Jamie and Claire...yet again. While Outlander is undeniably unique, there are some similar shows that can hold us over until season 6—or the series' ninth book , set to come out in 2020.

Each of these period pieces shares pop culture DNA with Outlander . Some, like the pirate drama Black Sails and HBO's four-part Catherine the Great , give alternate perspectives on life in the 18th century. Others feature characters that Claire would admire, like the capable women of Call the Midwife . Starz's sumptuous royals dramas, The Spanish Princess and The White Princess , look at history from a woman's perspective. Finally, if you're hoping to be adopted by another TV family, the Durrells in The Durrells in Corfu are as charming as the Frasers.

Here are the shows to watch after Outlander .

The White Princess

Claire Fraser is forever inserting herself into political power struggles. But Elizabeth of York ( Killing Eve 's Jodie Comer ) married into one.

Based on Philippa Gregory's hit novel , The White Princess focuses on the marriage of Elizabeth to King Henry VII (Jacob Collins-Levy), a union meant to end the War of the Roses by uniting the houses of Lancaster and York. Instead, the conflict moves inside the palace, as Elizabeth fights her mother and mother-in-law for control. With this series, you'll want to keep your family tree handy.

Elizabeth of York's story continues in Starz's The Spanish Princess , also based on Gregory's novels.

The Spanish Princess

Let's get this out of the way: King Henry VIII does not have a reputation for being as adoring a husband as Jamie Fraser. Notoriously, the real Henry married six times (and sentenced two wives to death).

However, The Spanish Princess travels back to a time when Henry was young, dreamy, and played perfectly by Rauri O'Connor. The Spanish Princess tells the true, but nearly unbelievable, story of how Catherine of Aragon (Charlotte Hope) traveled from Spain to England and became inextricably enmeshed with the Tudor empire. (Fun fact: She first married Henry's brother!) This intelligent drama is a woman-centric version of the tale, the one you wish the history books told.

Downton Abbey

If you haven't seen this sumptuous drama about an aristocratic English family at the turn of the century, close this article and begin watching .

Downton Abbey is beloved for its attention to character. The entire mansion comes alive because the Crawley family's stories matter as much as those who work "downstairs," a term used to describe the family's servants. After six seasons, the story continued in movie form .

The English monarchy continues to make headlines. But is anything as juicy as the complicated reign of King Henry VIII? Whereas The Spanish Princess showcases Catherine of Aragon, The Tudors is all about Henry (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and his wandering eye.

Black Sails

Seeking another well-researched period piece laced with undeniable sexiness? Look no further than Black Sails , a show set during the 18th century's Golden Age of Piracy.

Technically, Black Sails is a prequel to Robert Lewis Stevenson's classic 1883 novel Treasure Island , which followed Long John Silver and his pirate crew searching for Captain James Flint's buried treasure. But Black Sails is a decidedly modern show, which deepens Flint's character and explores his sexuality.

Catherine the Great

Around the same time Claire Fraser landed in Scotland, a poor Prussian princess named Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst moved to Russia to marry the heir to the empire. She took the name Catherine and began her legacy as Russia's longest-ruling female ruler .

This four-part mini-series catches Catherine the Great (Helen Mirren) nearing the end of her reign. Her empire's borders may be expanding to an unprecedented degree, but ideologically, she's still miles ahead of her countrymen. This is a fascinating portrait of a woman ahead of her time. Plus, fans of Outlander will likely appreciate the central romance between Catherine and Potemkin (Jason Clarke), the man she considers her equal.

Far and away, Poldark is the fan-favorite follow-up to Outlander . Why? One look at Aidan Turner as Captain Ross Poldark, the titular tortured redcoat returning to England after the Revolutionary War, should explain it all.

The fifth season of Outlander , which delves into North Carolina's colonial history, is like a prequel to Poldark . Watch what happens after Aidan returns to find his father dead, his house in shambles, and his love engaged to another man.

North and South

Psst—come closer. North and South is a cult classic, passed along by word of mouth. You're next.

Based on a novel by Elizabeth Gaskell , the four-part mini-series tells the story of a family from the south of England who must move to the industrial North after the patriarch leaves his job with the clergy. Just wait for the kiss . You'll know when you get there.

Don't watch Reign if you're expecting a fact-based rendering of Mary, Queen of Scots's life. Watch Reign if you want a show where druid prophecies intermingle with love triangles and palace intrigue clashes with inter-cousin drama.

The CW show follows Mary, Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane) as a young woman in France before she returns to Scotland and feuds with her cousin, Elizabeth I, to inherit the throne.

Call the Midwife

We've lost track of the number of times Claire's medical abilities have saved the day in Outlander . In a word, Claire is capable—and so are the nuns, trained as midwives, in this riveting historical drama.

Set in post-war England, Call the Midwife focuses on a band of women who held other women in their time of great joy, pain, and vulnerability: Childbirth.

The Durrells in Corfu

In Outlander , Claire touches the stones at Craigh na Duhn and starts over. In a way, the Durrell family in this joyous show do the same, when they sell their belongings in dreary England to begin again in Corfu.

The Durrells in Corfu is based on writer Lawrence Durrell's real experiences on the Greek island in the Ionian sea. Each member of the Durrell family, charming and idiosyncratic, will feel like a long-lost friend; each scene, a memory. This show is unparalleled in warmth, and rivaled only by Mamma Mia in vistas.

‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Makes One of Its Best Changes With Harvey Dent

Star wars' biggest problem is the fans, 'house of the dragon's season 2 finale is the perfect send-off for alicent.

Outlander is a popular drama series that blends fantasy and history to fantastic results, similar to another fan-favorite TV show you might know called Game of Thrones . Outlander first started airing in 2014 and is based on the bestselling book series by author Diana Gabaldon . The Starz series stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who is accidentally transported back 200 years to 1700s Scotland, landing right in the middle of a fight to keep control of the Highlands. Completely out of place as a modern English woman, Claire is forced to adjust to the starkly different environment, and soon enough she crosses paths with a handsome Scottish Highlander named Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan .

Outlander has a loyal fanbase and the show has been going for six seasons now, with a seventh season in the works , slated to be twice the length of the sixth. Over the seasons, Claire and Jamie go through quite a lot of personal hardship (and time travel) as their journey together continues, and fans are eager to know what happens next. But what should Outlander fans do while they wait for new episodes? If you are having a tough time finding your next favorite show, something to hold you over until next year, then check out these eleven great TV series that any Outlander fan will love to binge.

If what you really love about Outlander is the period romance aspect, then Poldark is the perfect show to watch next. Like Outlander , Poldark is based on the pre-existing book series of the same name, by Winston Graham . The show might not have any fantastical elements to the story, but it has plenty of love and drama, set in the late 1700s in Cornwall, England. Aiden Turner stars as Captain Ross Vennor Poldark, a man who returns from spending three years in the British Army fighting in the American War of Independence to find his father has passed and his estate is in shambles. Trying to recover, he hires a young woman named Demelza Carne, played by Eleanor Tomlinson , as a scullery maid, and the two continually butt heads. But over time, that antagonism blossoms into romance, and Poldark follows the couple over the years as they face challenges and loss. Like Claire and Jamie, Poldark and Demelza offer a timeless romance of years past. — Devon Forward

The Essex Serpent

Although the concept might make you believe that The Essex Serpent leans into the fantastical, as a series it is far more grounded in reality and quite moody. The Gothic series follows a widow named Cora Seaborne ( Claire Danes ) as she investigates the presence of a seemingly mystical serpent that is terrorizing a small town in Essex. In the town, she is quickly labeled as an outsider among the suspicious villagers, but finds friendship with the local pastor, Will Ransome ( Tom Hiddleston ) and his wife, Stella ( Clémence Poésy ). The complicated romantic dynamics will be familiar for any Outlander fan. Will begins to have feelings for Cora, but still holds much love and respect for his wife. As tensions run high with the disappearance of locals, Cora and Will must not only face off against the superstitions of the townsfolk but also the forbidden attraction they feel for one another. — Therese Lacson

Gentleman Jack

This short-lived series is a more than worthy addition to your historical romance watchlist. Nominated for two BAFTAs and created by Happy Valley ’s Sally Wainwright , Gentleman Jack tells the incredible true story of trailblazer, landowner, and prolific diarist Anne Lister , who is perfectly played by BAFTA winner Suranne Jones . Taking place in Yorkshire, England in the 1830s, this biographical drama follows Lister, who’s often considered the “first modern lesbian,” as she lives life the way she wants to live it. After her female lover leaves her to be part of a heterosexual relationship, Lister heads to her family’s home dubbed Shibden Hall and meets the kind and gentle heiress Ann Walker ( Sophie Rundle ). The two women swiftly fall in love, move in together, and even join their estates and exchange vows in a wedding ceremony. As the episodes unfold, Lister and Walker deal with judgment from their loved ones, changing power dynamics, and new business ventures. Lister details her relationships with women in a code language she invented in her diaries, the real ones of which were used in the making of the show. Lister and Walker’s partnership was seen as a very radical act for the time, but they had no intentions of sacrificing their authenticity for the public eye. — Emily Bernard

On the other hand, if the time travel part of Outlander is your favorite, then look no further. The NBC show Timeless stars Abigail Spencer as a history professor named Lucy Preston, Matt Lanter as soldier Wyatt Logan, and Malcolm Barrett as a programmer named Rufus Carlin, who form a team tasked with tracking down a stolen time machine. With a time machine of their own, they must chase the thief through the ages as they attempt to change history to benefit a mysterious organization. The show delivers on action and history, and as an added bonus, there’s quite a bit of romance as well. Timeless had a small yet devoted fan base while it was airing, and when the show was canceled after one season, the fans rallied together to get the cancelation reversed only three days later. Altogether, the show has two seasons and a two-hour finale, so it’s a good choice if you want a quick binge with a succinct ending, rather than a show that was canceled before the story could really be wrapped up. Tune in to Timeless for a fun and enjoyable story set all across time. — Devon Forward

Another popular historical drama that has plenty of seasons to binge is Vikings . The show is based on the legends of the Viking known as Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons. Season 1 begins in the late 700s, with Ragnar, played by Travis Fimmel , forming a plan to become an earl and lead a mission to raid England. Similar to Game of Thrones , Vikings has plenty of death over the seasons, but as it’s more based in history, the fighting and wars are similar to those that Jamie might fight throughout Outlander . All of the characters in Vikings have amazingly rich character arcs, with Katheryn Winnick playing the warrior Lagertha, who is also Ragnar’s wife, Clive Standen as Ragnar’s brother Rollo, and Ragnar’s sons Ubbe ( Jordan Patrick Smith ), Ivar the Boneless ( Alex Høgh Andersen ), and Bjorn Ironside ( Alexander Ludwig ) all playing very important roles. So if you want your next show to have a lot of historically-based action mixed in with the drama, you should check out Vikings . — Devon Forward

The Spanish Princess

The Spanish Princess is the third in a series of television historical dramas about influential female figures in European history. It’s a follow-up to 2013’s The White Queen starring Rebecca Ferguson and 2017’s The White Princess starring Jodie Comer , altogether based on a series of historical novels by Philippa Gregory . The Spanish Princess , which aired its 16 episodes throughout 2019 and 2020, stars Charlotte Hope as Catherine of Aragon, whose name some might recognize as belonging to the first wife of Henry VIII, but here she is a princess in the years before her marriage. The show recounts her journey to England to meet Prince Arthur ( Angus Imrie ), her betrothed, only to end up entangled with his younger brother Henry ( Ruairi O'Connor ) after Arthur’s tragic death. The Spanish Princess has everything you could ever want, including romance, war, politics, and court intrigue. As most stories of this time period in history tend to focus on the women who came after Catherine, it’s nice to see her story featured on screen, albeit a bit dramatized for entertainment. Though to be honest, European history of this time — and in particular the Tudors — had enough drama that the truth barely needs to be exaggerated to make interesting television. — Devon Forward

A Discovery of Witches

Still looking for that fantasy twist? A Discovery of Witches is an exciting fantasy drama with a great central romance that fans of Outlander will definitely love. But Outlander fans will probably enjoy the series even more when they get to the second season, which takes place mainly in 1500s Elizabethan London. A Discovery of Witches is based on the popular All Souls book series by Deborah Harkness , starring Teresa Palmer as a witch and historian named Diana Bishop and Matthew Goode as vampire and biochemistry professor Matthew Clairmont. The two meet at Oxford where Diana is studying alchemy, igniting a romance that challenges the long-held antagonism between the magical species, while also unraveling the mystery as to why magic seems to be disappearing. Just as star-crossed as Jamie and Claire, Diana and Matthew are a perfect substitute romance to obsess over as you wait for the Outlander couple to return. — Devon Forward

Black Sails

Posed as a prequel series to Robert Louis Stevenson ’s classic 1883 novel Treasure Island , Black Sails is set on New Providence Island in the Bahamas in the early 18th century, when piracy was at its peak. The show features many familiar characters, including Captain James Flint, played by Toby Stephens , John Silver, portrayed by Luke Arnold , Billy Bones, played by Tom Hopper , and more. Black Sails also has fantastic female characters front and center, with Hannah New playing Eleanor Guthrie, Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max, and Clara Paget as real-life pirate Anne Bonny, to name a few. As a premium channel series, Black Sails , which finished in 2017 after four seasons, had the same amount of freedom as Outlander in terms of action and adult content, which the creators used well to create a rich, character-driven story . Over the course of the show's run, Black Sails also gained a lot of praise for its queer representation, which is another reason you should check out this notable show. — Devon Forward

Both based on romance novels, Bridgerton offers a far lighter fare when compared to Outlander but is no less steamy or emotional. Following the romantic lives of the eight Bridgerton children through their time in Regency-era England, there's little political intrigue or warfare, but there's more than enough romance to boot. With each season centering around one of the siblings (so far), the series has gained massive appeal from audiences who want a historical romance with a bit more spice. The first season centers around the Duke of Hastings ( Regé-Jean Page ) and eldest Bridgerton daughter Daphne ( Phoebe Dynevor ), while the second season focuses on the eldest Bridgerton, Anthony ( Jonathan Bailey ), and the enchanting Kate Sharma ( Simone Ashley ). With plenty of soapy side plots, the series is sure to satisfy Outlander fans who might want a bit of a reprieve from some of the heavier subjects that the show is so good at tackling. — Therese Lacson

The Apple TV+ series Dickinson is unlike any other title on this list and it is better off for it. Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld illuminates the screen as a young Emily Dickinson , one of the best and most influential poets in American history. Created by Alena Smith , the half-hour origin story dramedy follows Emily as she navigates the frustrating expectations from her family and the gender norms that make it difficult for her to be the artist she was destined to be. Suffocating from societal oppression, the rebellious writer shamelessly pursues her passion for poetry, which she writes for her close friend and crush Sue ( Ella Hunt ), who encourages her to share her work with the world. Despite the era and its limitations, Dickinson feels very much like a modern coming-of-age series with its racially diverse cast, explorations of sexuality, and modern terminology like “influencer” and saying that people are being “so extra.” It unabashedly leans into life’s comically-messy moments, making this period piece a bit of lighter fare while still seriously exploring one’s deepest desires. This three-season series also features Jane Krakowski , Toby Huss , Adrian Enscoe , Wiz Khalifa , Jason Mantzoukas , Billy Eichner , and Zosia Mamet . — Emily Bernard

Set a little earlier than Jamie and Claire’s story, The Tudors is a popular historical TV series set in 1500s England. Although there’s no fantasy or supernatural aspect to the story, The Tudors definitely matches Outlander in terms of drama and action, and it has great historical fashion to rival Claire’s iconic Scottish and French attire. If you aren’t familiar with the history, The Tudors focuses on the infamous King Henry VIII , who notoriously went through six different wives during his lifetime, his first being Catherine of Aragon, who is the subject of the previously mentioned The Spanish Princess . The Showtime series stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry VIII, while other familiar faces like Henry Cavill , Natalie Dormer , and Annabelle Wallis are a part of the extensive cast. The Tudors is truly the perfect next watch for Outlander fans, a similarly exciting series with vibrant characters, and no shortage of romance and tragedy. — Devon Forward

12 Shows Like Outlander You Must See

of 12 Shows Like Outlander You Must See

It is no secret that novel-based TV shows are a recipe for blockbusters, especially when the novels are having their premise set somewhere in the European hinterlands. ‘Game of Thrones’ could be one such example, with George R R Martin, British, Scottish, and Irish accents, wars and gore, and one throne – a combination that looks like a love potion for the producers. ‘Outlander’ has always had a similar effect since its inception, with forever soaring popularity and stunning visuals. More importantly, it is a combination of a very rare mix – time travel and romance – the stuff of movies, if not TV shows, until ‘Outlander’ broke that myth and crushed it.

Having finished a 3-season run, the plot of ‘Outlander’ is set around Claire Randall, a nurse in the present day 1946, in the post-WWII era, who’s on a Scotland trip with her husband Frank when she’s teleported back in time, two centuries prior. She’s stuck between a tussle of the Highlanders and British Redcoats, is kidnapped by the Highlanders, marries Jamie – a Highlander himself and finds out that Captain Jonathan of the Redcoats is none other than Frank’s ancestor and her current arch-nemesis. The next two seasons have Claire back and forth in time while bearing a daughter and raising her back in the 20th century.

TV shows like ‘Outlander’ would resemble many aspects of it – time travel, medieval-era kingdoms, historical dramas, the underlying politics, set in a European backdrop, blood and gore, and most importantly, appealing romance, the primary reason why ‘Outlander’ has an outstanding viewership. Here’s the list of TV shows similar to Outlander that are our recommendations. You can stream some of these shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

12. Reign (2013-2017)

time travel tv shows like outlander

Set primarily in Scotland, similar to ‘Outlander’, the central character of the series is Mary, Queen of Scots. The series begins with Mary’s teenage days in Scotland and France, primarily within the French political setup. As Mary is all set to marry the prodigal Prince Francis, she’s caught in the political turmoil involving Bash – Francis’ half-brother, Elizabeth – the then Queen of England, and Nostradamus – the soothsayer whose predictions typically comes into play in determining marital ties which may lead to possible wars. The four-season long TV show was panned for its historical inaccuracies, though it got praise due to the romance portrayals – the only other reason why it resembles ‘Outlander’.

11. Timeless (2016-2018)

time travel tv shows like outlander

Abigail Spencer is Lucy Preston, the leader of a ragtag group called “Lifeboat” comprising a history professor, which is herself, along with Wyatt, a Delta Force mercenary, and Connor, the creator of Lifeboat among other fellas. The group should revisit history by using a time-machine prototype to save America as we know it from a criminal who has stolen the actual time machine to alter the history. They have to tread carefully, for the butterfly effect can be powerful, at the same time, not trying to change any critical events in the past. Lucy finds herself attracted towards a young lad in the 1800s, combined with the growing complexities of solving the case. ‘Timeless’ has now officially been cancelled, though the premise was strong enough to have another seasonal run.

10. The Tudors (2007-2010)

time travel tv shows like outlander

Set around the life and times of King Henry VIII, portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, along with an ensemble cast comprising Natalie Dormer, Henry Cavill among other big names, ‘The Tudors’ gained a worldwide audience as soon as it debuted as a series in 2007, despite being critiqued for its over-glorification of the lust for power over historical and political accuracies. To summarize, the premise begins with Henry VIII picking up his reign replete with political disturbances, courting Anne Boleyn, the famous queen who was executed later on, the marriages that follow and the age-old French-English conflicts that form the crux of the series. ‘The Tudors’ resembles ‘Outlander’ in many ways except for the time-travel part, although the historical inaccuracies could’ve been a little less abundant.

9. Penny Dreadful (2014-2016)

time travel tv shows like outlander

Set in the Victorian-era London in the late 1800s, the superbly enacted and widely followed TV series revolves around four primary characters – Vanessa Eves – the leader of the pack, Sir Malcolm Murray, an explorer whose daughter Mina has been kidnapped, Chandler, a marksman, and Frankenstein, the mad scientist. All these misfits should come together in solving cases, banishing evil and falling in love all the while. ‘Penny Dreadful’ hit the zenith of its viewership when it was released and got all the critical praise it needed, thus catapulting it being one of the most watched series in its sub-genre. The intensity, the peculiar characters, Eva Green’s performance, the blood and the carnage have been convincingly filmed and portrayed, I’d say a notch better than ‘Outlander’.

8. Victoria (2016-2017)

time travel tv shows like outlander

Another TV show surrounding the British Royal Family, albeit of a slightly dated era, ‘Victoria’ has Queen Victoria of England as the central character and the series depicts her life and times from as a young princess until her crowning and assuming an additional title of Empress of India, followed by her struggle to assume office between childbirths and diplomacy, while trying to strike a fine balance between her personal and public life. Jenna Coleman plays the titular character and although we have seen a great deal of British Royal charm through Netflix’s ‘Crown’, this series takes you a little way back into the literal “Victorian” era and the mesmerising visuals are merely an added bonus.

7. Black Sails (2014-2017)

time travel tv shows like outlander

A fictional series set in the Golden Age of Piracy, the typical late 1600s and early 1700s when piracy was rampant and infamous in the uncharted waters, ‘Black Sails’ opens in the New Providence Island wherein the pirates are proclaiming a war against the entire world, for they’re been meted with the same fate. There are many pirates of the lore whose characters have been written for the screen, including our beloved Blackbeard. Treasure hunts, waging war against the British empire, love interests and sensuality form the remaining of the series. ‘Black Sails’ is gripping and fictionalization is done to the extent of realism which is great from a cinematic point of view, but the stereotypes and to an extent, the fleeting character development may have proved wrong with some critics. Come what may, this is one of those costume-heavy, pirate dramas with ample blood, sex, and romance that one cannot overlook.

6. Spartacus (2010-2013)

time travel tv shows like outlander

If ‘Spartacus’ can delve deep into one of the aspects of ‘Outlander’, it would be sex. And nothing else. Maybe romance bordering with lust, a plenty of gore, and beefy men and sultry women, set in the backdrop of ancient Rome. The desirable TV series has had a convenient, successful run across three different storylines and a miniseries and yet there was no dearth in a demand for more. The story’s central character is Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator who is surrounded by a host of Romans and other gladiators and slave men. For no reason, you would somehow start liking and binging it and the guilty pleasure is immense. What are you waiting for?

5. Vikings (2013-Present)

time travel tv shows like outlander

The only reason why ‘Vikings’ deserves to be on this list is due to its apparent historical significance (being connected to the Norse mythology) and the highlight of the medieval era that is set around the Age of Vikings. The life and times of Ragnar Lothbrok, a mythical Norse legend who is brought to life in the series, ‘Vikings’ as a series revolves around the Nordic traditions, families, political turmoils, wars and killings, and most importantly – standing up to the legends Ragnar is known for. Unlike ‘Spartacus’ where the character development is nearly lost and sex is the driver, ‘Vikings’ showed us more depth in its characters and the premise was practically woven around them, a departure from the preconceived notions surrounding such TV shows.

4. Downton Abbey (2010-2015)

time travel tv shows like outlander

A TV show with a narrative that starts from the day of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, until the late1920s, ‘Downton Abbey’ is centred around the Crawley family, and their domestic servants. Matthew Crawley is the new heir apparent following the demise of the Grantham heirs in the now sunk Titanic, one Lady Mary who is attracted to Matthew, combined with the tug-o-war between the aristocrats, and the effects of politico-social events on the Crawley family. Aristocracy in the pre-war era of Great Britain has never been told so well until ‘Downton Abbey’ happened. An unmissable, worthwhile, award-winning tv series, at your leisure.

3. Doctor Who (2005-Present)

time travel tv shows like outlander

By listing ‘Doctor Who’ on this list, I am trying to tackle the time-travel angle, a premise that has so far been “exploited” in a very limited number of tv shows or movies. The premise is set around a fictional Time Lord nicknamed “the doctor” who fled his home planet Gallifrey in a TARDIS – the de facto time machine which helps the doctor traverse through time. The doctor brings weirdos along in his quests through time to take on the enemies and often changes appearances to bypass any mortal shortcomings. As a result, we have seen thirteen different actors and actresses portraying the doctor so far. ‘Doctor Who’ has shattered many records across many verticals and is probably one of the most followed, cherished, and acclaimed British television series ever, only next to ‘Game of Thrones’. If nothing, we can watch it for the accent. Can we, please?

2. Poldark (2015-Present)

time travel tv shows like outlander

The closest to ‘Outlander’, in terms of the costumes, production design and also probably the context, ‘Poldark’ is the story of Captain Ross Poldark, a British soldier who has returned from the American War of Independence, only to find about the pile of debt his family is in, the ruins of an estate he has inherited and the love of his life is being married to his cousin Francis. He falls for Demelza and the timeless romance begins that sets the precedent for the remaining of the series, perhaps the most prominent reason of the immense popularity of the show. The casting and the performances are the highlights of this binge-worthy, addictive TV show.

1. Game of Thrones (2011-Present)

time travel tv shows like outlander

GoT is on the list only because of merit, and perhaps a bunch of intense romance moments, which comes as a surprise for those who think of it as a show with wars, politics, bloodshed and swear words. Be it the extremely addictive chemistry between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen or be it the love tales of Samwell Tarly or the one-sided infatuation of Ser Jorah towards his Khaleesi , ‘Game of Thrones’ has shown it all. And what’s there to narrate about the never-ending lust and the sex-scenes which are replete across each and every episode of the highly-acclaimed tv show. Though it has a very subtle resemblance with ‘Outlander’, the addiction and the dialogues are the selling points of ‘Game of Thrones’. And hell, it has dragons and all.

7 Shows Like ‘Outlander’ to Watch if You Like Steamy Historical Dramas

These seven tv shows are sure to tickle your inner sassenach while you wait for 'outlander' to return.

It's hard to believe that Claire and Jamie's epic epoch-hopping and centuries-spanning romance is nearing its end on-screen, but alas lasses and laddies, it's true: Outlander is in the middle of its second-to-last season. The first half of Season 7 aired in the summer of 2023, and the second half is slated for 2024. And after that, Season 8 will wrap up the genre-bending historical fantasy drama for good.

That means there are two more periods of Droughtlander to endure (and then another while you wait for the prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood , but that's another story). To help you get through it, we've rounded up a list of steamy historical dramas to watch while you wait. And also some time travel thrillers, and some straight-up fantasy shows. There's a lot going on on Outlander !

If you like swoonworthy adult fairytales: 'The Empress'

Historical accuracy be damned — this fictionalized (and romanticized/idealized) German-language take on the courtship and marriage of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (colloquially known as "Sisi") and Emperor Franz Joseph I is so passionate and sensual, it'd make even the likes of Claire and Jamie Fraser blush. The Empress also depicts how Sisi's mostly-factually-accurate rebellious nature and personality quirks clashed with the Viennese court, and how the nobles around her loved to hate her, and her people hated to love her.

Rotten Tomatoes : 80% critics, 83% audience

Watch on Netflix

If you like warring tribes and complicated politics with a British backdrop: 'The White Queen'

If you were simultaneously into Claire and Jamie's romance from the jump and fascinated by the history behind the Jacobite Rebellion versus the British Redcoats, then The White Queen — which, like Outlander, is also a Starz series — may be a great match for your interests in love stories and political strategizing and scheming. Starring Rebecca Ferguson as Elizabeth Woodville and Max Irons as Edward IV of England, The White Queen follows the women behind the War of the Roses (the long conflict between the House of York and the House of Lancaster for the throne of England) and the strings they pull in order to achieve power for their side.

Watch on Starz

If you like watching the intergenerational impact of time travel: 'Dark'

It's tough to avoid hyperbolic language when describing Dark — one of Netflix's best and most original series to date, period — but the German-language show is such a well-thought-out time-travel story that it's hard not to convince yourself that Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese don't have some experience of their own time-traveling through wormholes. Dark deftly balances the "science" of its time-travel along with thrilling plot pivots and twisty character arcs, and its multi-generational casting may be some of the uncanny to ever grace any screen, big or small. And, like Outlander, Dark certainly has its fair share of forbidden love and complicated romances, too.

Rotten Tomatoes : 95% critics, 94% audience

If you like your romance with a dash of magic (and some monsters, too): 'A Discovery of Witches'

Think of A Discovery of Witches as a more grown-up version of The Vampire Diaries — demons, witches and vampires all bickering and battling over dominance in both the natural and supernatural world, with a gorgeous love story at the heart of it all. It stars Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, two actors with almost as much on-screen chemistry as our dear Outlander leads Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan ).

Rotten Tomatoes : 87% critics, 81% audience

Watch on Max

If you like watching characters from way back freak about the future: 'Beforeigners'

At least Claire was somewhat prepared when she first time-traveled from the 1940s to the 1740s, having been raised by an archaeologist and married to a history buff. The poor involuntary time-travelers in Norway's Beforeigners were launched from the Stone Age, the Viking Age , and the 19th Century to present-day Oslo, confused and in disbelief over all of the technological advancements of the past several hundred years. Beforeigners stands out among the time-travel television fare because of its considerable twists and turns — for one, it's a murder mystery, and its characters also have time- migration to contend with.

Rotten Tomatoes : 100% critics, 88% audience

Buy on Prime Video

If you like thinking about the Roman Empire (and the Druids' pushback on its expansion): 'Britannia'

Do you find yourself thinking a lot about the Roman Empire and you're an Outlander diehard? Turns out there's a show that perfectly intersects with these two, uh, fandoms: Britannia, a historical fantasy drama set in 43 AD during the Roman invasion of Britain, led by General Aulus Plautius. There's a fair amount of historical accuracy in its three seasons, but there's also sex, swords and a sprinkle (or more like multiple scoops) of Druid mysticism, which makes for both an exciting and occasionally educational watch.

Rotten Tomatoes : 92% critics, 76% audience

Watch on Prime Video

If you like time travelers fighting to preserve history: 'The Ministry of Time'

Instead of getting bogged down with the impossible details of its time travel rules, Spanish series The Ministry of Time ( El Ministerio del Tiempo ), like Outlander , is more interested in appeasing history buffs while providing plenty of entertainment with solid storylines and charming characters to root for. The Ministry of Time revolves around three time-keeping secret agents from different eras — a warrior from the 16th Century, the first female university student from the 19th Century, and a paramedic from the 21st century — who prevent people from manipulating Spanish history for their own selfish gains through time-traveling doors.

Rotten Tomatoes: N/A ( 8.2/10 on IMDB )

When it comes to TV shows that captivate audiences with their historical drama, romance, and adventure, Outlander is definitely a fan favorite. The show, which is based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon, follows the story of Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who is mysteriously transported back in time to 18th century Scotland. There, she finds herself caught up in a world of political intrigue, love, and danger.

If you’re a fan of Outlander and are looking for similar shows to watch, you’re in luck. There are several TV shows out there that offer a mix of historical drama, romance, and adventure that will keep you hooked from start to finish. In this article, we’ll take a look at some TV shows like Outlander, as well as provide 13 song examples that capture the essence of each show.

See how the cast of 'Outlander' have changed since their first appearance on the show

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The first episode of "Outlander" premiered on August 9, 2014, exactly 10 years ago.

Jamie ( Sam Heughan ) and Claire ( Caitríona Balfe ) are the only original characters still on the show.

Many of the cast look a lot different now from when they first joined the series.

When " Outlander " first graced our screens in 2014, it quickly captivated audiences with its compelling blend of historical drama and heart-racing romance.

At the heart of the series, which is celebrating 10 years since its premiere on August 9, are the characters brought to life by the exceptionally talented cast.

Based on a series of best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon , the series follows Claire Randall ( Caitríona Balfe ), a former World War II military nurse who travels through time and falls in love with Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ), a dashing 18th-century Highland warrior.

Both actors were relatively unknown when they first landed the parts that would transform their lives and make them globally recognized stars.

Let's dive into how Jamie and Claire have changed over the years alongside other key characters on the show.

Caitríona Balfe has played headstrong protagonist Claire since the very beginning of the show.

At the beginning of the series, Claire Randall was a combat nurse living in the 1940s with her university professor husband.

But everything changed for her when she stumbled through some magical standing stones while honeymooning in the Highlands, which transported her to the 1740s and into the arms of her second husband, Jamie Fraser.

Claire has been through a lot over the show's last seven seasons.

However, she's still a nurse. In the show's most recently aired season, she was seen administering medical aid to survivors of the Second Battle of Saratoga.

As of season seven, Claire — who is supposed to have aged over 30 years since the series began — is living in North Carolina with Jamie with their daughter and grandchildren.

Sam Heughan is the only other actor on the show who has been playing his character since season one.

Audiences were introduced to the young, redheaded Highland warrior Jamie Fraser in the pilot episode shortly after Claire's tumble through the standing stones of Craigh na Dun.

On the run from the English, Jamie initially hid the fact that he was a Laird and had a castle to his name when he and Claire married to protect her from being captured by the English Army too.

Like Claire, Jamie has noticeably aged since season one but he still has his distinctive red hair.

Viewers have seen Jamie stay true to his wedding vows to protect Claire time and time again.

Over the last seven seasons, which have spanned over three decades, the characters have faced myriad challenges — including a 20-year separation — but they've always found their way back to each other.

Sophie Skelton made her debut in the season two finale as Brianna, Jamie and Claire's teenage daughter.

Brianna was born after Claire traveled back to her own time and was raised believing that her father was Claire's first husband.

Upon learning the truth about her biological father, she followed her mother back through the stones in season four.

Brianna has since returned to the 20th century and has become a mother.

Brianna initially struggled to adjust to life in the 18th century, having grown up strong and independent like her mother.

However, her strong bond with Roger helped her through and after marrying at Fraser's Ridge, the two became parents to children Jemmy and Mandy.

After it was discovered that Mandy had a life-threatening heart defect that required more advanced surgery than Claire was able to perform, Brianna and the rest of her family traveled back to their original timeline.

Roger, played by Richard Rankin, was also introduced to audiences at the end of season two.

While Roger is the adopted son of Claire's friend Reverend Wakefield, he also has ties to the Frasers as a direct descendant of Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan.

When audiences first met Roger, he was a thirty-something Oxford don, keen to help an old friend of his father's on a project about the Jacobite Rising of 1745. It didn't take him long to fall for Claire's daughter, Brianna.

The character has had a wild journey and is now a devoted husband and father.

Roger has had to learn to adapt to the past and endured brutal hardships as a result. After questioning his place in the 18th century, he has felt much more at ease since returning to his time period with Brianna and his children.

Claire's first husband Frank Randall, played by Tobias Menzies, was introduced in the pilot.

Frank was Claire's first husband, whom she met while serving as a WW2 nurse.

Audiences are shown from the beginning that Frank has a passion for uncovering his genealogy and his ancestor's links to the 1945 Jacobite uprising.

Frank tragically died in the show's fourth season, setting into motion Claire's journey back to Jamie.

Although he was devoted to Claire before she disappeared, after she returned carrying Jamie's unborn child, he struggled to accept what happened.

In season four, while planning to leave Claire after falling for another woman, he died in a car accident.

Menzies also portrayed Frank's ancestor, Black Jack Randall, in a clever bit of casting.

In the book series Frank and his 18th-century ancestor are said to bear a strong resemblance, so the show creators decided to have Menzies play both roles.

While Frank was a mild-mannered and principled professor, Black Jack was the total opposite. He was introduced in the pilot as a sadistic British officer who later develops an obsession with Jamie that leads him to commit violent and depraved acts against the Scot.

The villainous Black Jack met his end at the Battle of Culloden in season three.

Audiences thankfully saw the last of Black Jack Randall in season three.

He died in a final, fateful encounter with Jamie on the battlefield, symbolizing the culmination of their brutal and destructive rivalry.

Murtagh was Jamie's devoted godfather. Introduced in season one, he quickly became a fan favorite.

Murtagh followed Jamie on his early adventures and protected Claire when Jamie himself couldn't.

While he gave the outward appearance of a curmudgeon, audiences soon realized that Murtagh was as loyal as they come and cared deeply for those around him.

Murtagh survived longer in the show that he did in the book.

Jamie's godfather's fate is probably the biggest departure from the books in the television show.

In Diana Gabaldon's book series the show is based on, Murtagh died on the battlefield at Culloden at the beginning of the third book, "Voyager."

However, the show's creators kept his character alive until season five after realizing just how popular he was with audiences.

Audiences first met Lord John Grey in season three.

He was introduced as the governor of Ardsmuir prison, where Jamie is serving time following the Battle of Culloden.

Like his brother, William Grey, whom Jamie met by chance some years earlier, Lord John has a strong sense of honor and duty.

He and Jamie initially clashed but came to have mutual respect for each other, although it has been hinted since the show's early seasons that Lord John harbors deeper feelings for Jamie.

Lord John Grey will have a significant story arc in the second part of "Outlander" season seven.

Over the seasons, Lord John has emerged as a loyal ally to the Frasers, often caught between his duty to the British Crown and his personal loyalty to Jamie.

He is also the father figure of Jamie's son, William, who was reintroduced as a young man in the most recent season. Audiences can expect Lord John to have an even bigger presence in the second half of season seven , due to be released in November.

Jamie's son William came into the picture in season four.

At the time, the young William was played by child actor Oliver Finnegan.

William is legally the son and heir of the Earl of Ellesmere and his wife, Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James). But as audiences know, he was secretly fathered by Jamie after Geneva blackmailed Jamie to take her virginity before her wedding night.

Charles Vandervaart has played an aged-up version of the character since season seven.

Jamie and his son, who has since grown up and become a British soldier, came face-to-face for the first time since season three in the mid-season finale of season seven.

Audiences can expect to see William feature more in the upcoming episodes if the series continues to follow the arc of the book series.

Jamie and Claire got to know their nephew, affectionately known as Young Ian, in season three.

When first introduced, Ian is an adventurous and spirited teenager, eager to prove himself. He was more than eager to join Jamie and Claire when they emigrated from Scotland to the newly founded colonies in America.

Ian has undergone the most noticeable physical transformation since his first appearance.

In season four, Ian was taken prisoner by the Mohawk and has since embraced their culture by adopting their style of dress and language.

While he previously had a Mohawk wife, Ian has been back living with the Frasers for a while and has since set his eyes on Rachel Hunter (Izzy Meikle-Small).

Fergus, a resourceful and mischievous French street urchin, was taken in by Jamie and Claire in season two.

His birth name was Claudel, but Jamie gave him the Scottish moniker shortly after employing the youngster.

It didn't take long for Jamie and Claire to begin to see Fergus as a son, and he returned their kindness by loyally serving the family and helping them through numerous dangerous situations.

Fergus was recast for season three following the 20-year time jump.

Fergus has remained fiercely loyal to Jamie over the last few seasons. In season five, he married Marsali (Lauren Lyle), whom Jamie helped raise during his separation from Claire.

Season six saw Fergus deal with his insecurities after he wasn't able to protect his wife and family from an attack. He and Marsali didn't factor into season seven's first batch of episodes, but audiences can look forward to seeing them both reprise their roles in the future.

Outlander’s losing virginity scene is even more groundbreaking 10 years later

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan looking longingly at each other in Outlander episode 'The Wedding'

Outlander ’s virginity-losing scene is even better a decade after the first-ever episode was released.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the first-ever episode of Outlander season one, when fans were first introduced to Claire Beauchamp (played by Caitriona Balfe ) and Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan ).

Although it may have been a decade since the pilot episode was released, those early seasons are still remembered fondly by fans who are just as obsessed with the series today as they were ten years ago.

As one of those obsessed fans, I can safely say that the first-ever sex scene between Claire and Jamie is still the blueprint for intimacy scenes.

The chemistry between the actors is phenomenal but there’s something more beneath the surface that has meant this endearing scene has set the standard for intimacy on TV.

The episode is gentle, innocent, and above all, hot, basically everything that losing your virginity should be!

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan as Claire and Jamie looking longingly at eachother in Outlander

Just to add a little context, in season one episode seven, Claire is forced to marry Jamie to protect her from the English. There’s a whole complicated backstory but the essence of the situation is: this is a marriage of convenience.

That said, there had been some major flirting between the pair and a bit of emotional conflict for our poor Claire who was of course still married to Frank -who she accidentally ditched in the 1940s in favour of mud, rain, and sexy highlanders in the eighteenth century.

Before she ties the knot with the red-headed hunk, Claire has a very honest conversation with Jamie in which she tells him she has been married and she isn’t a virgin. She asks him if that bothers him, to which he replies: ‘No, so long as it doesn’t bother you that I am [a virgin].’

Throughout the whole episode, we then see the pair spend time together in their room a the inn and the lead-up as they consummate their marriage – a few times.

The losing virginity scene sees the pair chat, warm up to one another, have a few drinks and only then get a bit heated with the duo undressing each other into their undergarments.

‘I said I was a virgin, not a monk. If I need guidance I’ll ask,’ says Jamie full of confidence after helping Claire out of her corset.

The poor lad then tries to mount her from behind ‘like the horses’ as he doesn’t realise that actually humans and horses don’t have to have relations in the same position – yikes.

The couple has a realistic first time – quick, awkward, and unsatisfying for Claire. But things warm up as they chat and actually get to know each other and share a meal.

The pair then get properly naked with each other for the first time and things go very well with Claire leading the way.

By the end of the episode, the couple is all eye contact as they make love while wrapped in a kilt rounding off their wedding night with yet another sweet scene, this time as equal partners.

Sam Heughan as Jamie looking at Claire as they tie the knot in The Wedding episode.

The episode is essentially dedicated to Jamie losing his virginity with the episode titled: The Wedding, but mostly focusing on the wedding night.

This means that there’s time for them to actually have a realistic first time that still ends in a lusty romantic romp that’s satisfying for viewers.

My Lady Jane created a standout virginity-losing scene this year that was applauded by fans. But while this scene was fantastic, it just didn’t have the realism or the emotion packed in like Outlander.

Granted, My Lady Jane didn’t dedicate most of an episode to depict one lusty night, which could have been another factor in Outlander’s corner.

But, My Lady Jane, and Bridgerton also both fell into the usual period drama set-up where a man teaches a woman how to have sex.

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan as Claire and Jamie partially naked under a cover holding eachother in a scene from Outlander

Typically in a period romance, the woman is the innocent virgin and her love interest has either worked his way around a brothel ( looking at you Colin Bridgerton) or has had dalliances in the past.

This means that the woman is always on the back foot and there’s a teacher-and-student dynamic that emerges – with the man in the lead of course.

In Outlander, the couple is both nervous and a bit scared for different reasons, but it starts out with Claire in the driving seat, teaching Jamie in a gentle and sexy – but non-patronising way.

The episode may have been released 10 years ago but the intimacy in the series is perhaps even more groundbreaking today given the fact that there is nothing in mainstream media that can compare and TV scenes still typically fall into the male leading the woman dynamic.

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heuhgan on a horse wrapped in a kilt as claire and Jamie in outlander.

First-time scenes usually highlight just one emotion: humour, romance, awkwardness, or lust but Outlander nails all of these emotions – and more.

I still can’t think of a series that has managed to execute a scene that perfectly balances all of these elements so well, while throwing in guilt, loyalty, friendship and fear.

While I’m gutted that the series is set to end after season eight which is set to be released in November 2024, Outlander is most certainly leaving behind a legacy.
