Photos of Viking Mississippi on an Upper Mississippi River Cruise

steamboat dinner cruise

Though it got its start in 1997 on the rivers of Russia (and, later, Europe), Viking has long eyed a foray into North American river cruising.

That dream was realized in 2022 when Viking Mississippi debuted on the legendary Mississippi river. The then-450-foot vessel, capable of carrying 386 passengers, eschewed the steamboat stylings many competitors had tried in favor of Viking’s unique Scandinavian flair. That means no bright-red paddlewheel, no “riverlorian” delivering lectures. No steam-driven calliope.

It wasn’t an instant success. Viking, like many U.S. lines, found challenges with staffing Viking Mississippi up to the standard expected by the line’s guests, many of whom have had already tried at least one of the company’s ocean, expedition or European river cruise products. That took some time to figure out.

The line also took the time to put Viking Mississippi through a complete drydock before the 2024 season started, lengthening it by 20 feet to reduce vibrations from the ship’s unique propulsion system and to make improvements to the vessel’s Restaurant, River Café, and other passenger and technical spaces.

Cruise Critic had the opportunity to hop aboard Viking Mississippi this week on an Upper Mississippi cruise from St. Louis, Missouri to St. Paul, Minnesota. While it may have taken Viking two years to get to this point, we found a ship that rolls the best of Viking’s ocean, expedition and European river cruise product into one striking hybrid ship that is purpose-built to sail America’s most legendary waterway.

It may have taken Viking two years to get here, but the results are clear: all that hard work paid off. One of the largest passenger vessels to ever ply the Mississippi, Viking Mississippi doesn’t attempt to recreate Mark Twain’s America – it evolves it with some of the best service on the U.S. rivers; excellent food and beverages that reflect local tastes; and entertainment options that have surprised us with their diversity and quality

Here’s a look inside Viking’s beautiful Viking Mississippi:

LAWRENCE — The Merrimack River will have a parade of steamboats tooting their whistles and cruising the waters this weekend as two nonprofit organizations join forces for a steamboat regatta.

The two-day event takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday to Sunday at the Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program, 1 Eaton St.

Steamboats will travel the Merrimack River over eight miles from the Lawrence Dam to Lowell.

The two nonprofits, the Institute for Industrial Art and History (IIAH) of North Andover and Greater Lawrence Community Boating are hosting the free event during which the public can get up close and personal with the boats and see them in operation.

Between eight and 10 steamboats will take to the Merrimack River with their captains available to answer questions about their boats. The steamboats are coming from all over New England, with most from New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

This is the first time the Institute has brought a steamboat regatta to the Merrimack Valley.

IIAH president John Schroeder said to his knowledge, this also is the first time a collection of steamboats will gather in Massachusetts, and he’s hoping it won’t be the last.

The institute looks at ways to celebrate the area’s industrial and scientific heritage. Schroeder said he’s gotten to know the steamboat community in New Hampshire since he moved to New Hampshire 50 years ago and thought the Merrimack Valley and an urban area like this could benefit from seeing the boats in action and understand their connection to technology today.

“I thought what if we could bring steamboats to an urban area where people have probably never seen one could see one and learn what they are all about,” Schroeder said.

The steamboats will parade the Merrimack River starting at 10 a.m., tooting their whistles up and down the river throughout the day and periodically docking so that people can talk to the captains and find out how the vessels work.

“They’re fun to watch,” Schroeder said.

Most of the steamboats coming to the regatta are big enough to hold up to four people including the captain and a few passengers.

They are all powered by wood-fired boilers. Every two to three hours, the boats have to return to the dock to get more wood.

The steamboats also get their namesake because they use water from the river, which goes into the boiler, to make the steam that powers the engines.

The longest boat on the Merrimack River will be about 30 feet this weekend, but most are 20 to 30 feet long.

While the public will not be able to ride in the boats, Schroeder said that experience is a goal for a future regatta.

There will be demonstrations and exhibits about steamboats and a small steamboat will be stationed on a trailer at the boating center to show how the boiler and engine works.

“I am hoping we can get the Lawrence community interested in this and we can make it an annual event,” Schroeder said.

As the nonprofit promotes science education and industrial heritage, Schroeder said this regatta is an opportunity to expand knowledge of how far society has come and the importance of past technology.

“We have a lot of things like cell phones and the internet and we don’t really appreciate that the technology we have today is an evolution from technology going back hundreds of years,” Schroeder said.

In today’s world where people are locked on their computer screens, the steamboat regatta offers something tangible, he added.

“You can actually touch these machines, pull the string, blow the whistle, push the throttle and watch the wheel turn,” Schroeder said. “You can’t do that on your phone.”
