About Bran Castle

Bran Castle is a medieval fortress between Transylvania and Wallachia, in Central Romania. The construction of the fortress was completed in 1382, to protect the border of Transylvania. Bran Castle is thought to be the inspiration for Dracula’s lair in Bram Stoker’s famous 1987 vampire story, making it a major reason for its popularity and the reason a million tourists pass through its gardens, souvenir shops, and doors each year.

Despite the lack of Vampires hiding in the closets at Bran Castle, millions of tourists still cling to the notion of sinister happenings in and around the ground. Maybe this is the reason it’s a major draw and tourist boost for Romania. It’s even thought that the Romanian government still promotes the connection of Bran Castle with Dracula, to encourage tourists to visit.

In reality, the castle is fit for Queens and Princesses and is easily one of the most Instagrammable places in Romania. Queen Marie of Romania was very fond of Bran Castle and was subsequently gifted the castle in 1920 by the people of Brasov. During her residency, Queen Marie decorated the castle with beautiful paintings of royalty and built up collections of unique antiques and 14th-century armour and weaponry. All of which are still on display today.

Wandering around the town of Bran

The town of Bran itself is very pretty with medieval walls and old buildings. Take some time to wander around the shops and the plenty of market stalls selling gimmicky Dracula souvenirs. The things you will find may surprise you! If you’re there in the Autumn time, it would be a good idea to buy some Halloween decor or souvenirs for your next Halloween party.

If you get a little hungry after exploring the castle, there are plenty of cute cafes to grab a bite to eat and drink. You could choose to dine at one of the fancy pubs for a nice hot sit-down meal, or you could quickly grab a chip barm from the chippy that is located just outside of the bus stop that the bus leaves from to go back to Brasov. Our personal recommendation is the chippy! It’s cheap, delicious, and certainly a nice treat after the horror of our food being smothered in dill during our Central Asia trip.

Planning a trip from Brasov to Bran Castle? I’ll share everything I know about visiting Dracula’s Castle from Brasov including how to travel from Brasov to Bran by car, tour, taxi and bus (including costs and the pros and cons of the different methods).

I’d had my eye on Romania for years only partly due to mysterious rumours of vampires. So when I ended up in Germany last summer, I decided to head east through the Czech Republic , Austria , Slovakia and Hungary towards Romania . I learnt that it’s best to visit Dracula’s Castle from Brasov, a charming city in Transylvania flanked by the Carpathian Mountains. How could I resist? Bran Castle is brimming with centuries-old history, myths and legends. Whether you’re travelling by public transport, taking a Romania road trip , backpacking or flashpacking, it should be high on your itinerary. It’s good news for budget travellers : visiting Dracula’s Castle from Brasov can cost as little as 14 RON (€3)!

Quick background of Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle)

A Castle has stood on this spot since 1212 but was destroyed by the Mongols. Bran Castle was built in 1377 and used to defend the area from the Ottomans. In later years, it became a customs post on the mountainous pass between Transylvania and Wallachia. It was passed between Hungarian kings, unsuccessfully invaded by the Turks, briefly held by the Saxons, and eventually fell into decay. After Transylvania became part of Greater Romania, Bran was renovated and became the favourite residence of Queen Marie of Romania. But when the communist era began, the royals were thrown out and the Castle was made into a museum. Bran was only returned to its rightful heir in 2005. But let’s face it, there’s one main thing that puts Bran on the map: it’s the fictional setting for Bram Stoker’s 1897 Dracula novel. While Bram Stoker didn’t visit Bran Castle himself, it’s thought that he read about it and selected it as the setting for his eerie novel. To be honest, even this isn’t confirmed but since the Castle has a loose link to the real-life Dracula, it’s as likely a story as any.

Brasov to Bran Castle

Who was Dracula?

Vlad Tepes was the ruler of Wallachia in the 1400s, revered around Europe for his acts of brutal warfare. He earned the nickname ‘Vlad the Impaler’ due to the gruesome ways he impaled his enemies. When Vlad Tepes was captured by the Hungarians, he was rumoured to be held prisoner in Bran Castle. However, scholars have since disproved this, saying he was actually held in Budapest. The rumour he was in Bran may have been circulated due to the foreboding look of the castle. To summarise, Vlad Tepes AKA Vlad the Impaler never visited Bran. Nor did Bram Stoker. But since the character of Count Dracula is loosely based on Vlad Tepes who is loosely associated with the Castle, Bran has become the pop culture home of Dracula. Maybe the eerie castle in the books was based on Bran, but the descriptions don’t really fit. Honestly, the connection is tenuous at best. But I love a spooky story and even watched the 1931 Dracula movie on my laptop to psych myself up for visiting Dracula’s Castle! So, with the history out of the way, how to get to Dracula’s Castle?

Getting from Brasov to Bran Castle

You have three main options when visiting Dracula’s Castle from Brasov:

  • Drive (your own car or hire car)
  • Take an organised day tour
  • Ride the public Brasov to Bran Castle bus.

I’ll detail these three options as we go along…

how to visit draculas castle

Here’s how to get to Bran Castle…

#1 – Driving to Dracula’s Castle from Brasov

Drive northwest from Brasov on the DN73/E574. You’ll pass through Rasnov before reaching Bran. The Castle will be on your left. Parking outside Dracula’s Castle costs 4 RON per hour. Pros of driving from Brasov to Dracula’s Castle: You’re in control of your itinerary and can arrive early to beat the tour groups. Cons of driving from Brasov to Dracula’s Castle: Hiring a car and driving overseas can be stressful especially if you’re a solo traveller .

Use Rentalcars.com to find car hires in Romania.

#2 – Brasov to Bran Castle by day tour

If you don’t have your own set of wheels, this is the quickest and most convenient option. Tours depart Brasov by airconditioned minibus and visit both Bran Castle and Rasnov Citadel in the morning. You’ll be back by early afternoon having ticked off the sights. More time for relaxing in the main square and eating kürtőskalács… I mean, um, admiring the architecture!

Take a Bran Castle day trip from Brasov .

You can also choose to extend the trip to visit Peles Castle (arguably Romania’s most beautiful) during the afternoon. Pros of taking a day tour to Bran Castle from Brasov: Everything is organised for you, and you’ll learn from a friendly tour guide. Cons of taking a day tour to Bran Castle from Brasov: It’s the more expensive option and, if you’re the type of person who likes to explore slowly, you may feel rushed.

Brasov to bran day trip

#3 – Brasov to Bran Castle by public bus

Catching the Brasov to Bran bus isn’t difficult. All you need to do is get to Brasov’s Bus Station 2 (Autogara 2) and find the bus labelled Bran – Rasnov. Getting to Autogara 2 from Brasov – I originally planned to catch a bus from downtown Brasov to the bus station. Bus numbers 5 and 22 travel between the city and bus station throughout the day. I ended up in a rush the morning of my visit so called an Uber for 8 RON instead. Autogara 2 to Bran Castle – the first bus to Bran Castle from Brasov is at 8am daily. Buses run every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 1 hour at weekends. The bus is clearly marked and the journey will take around 45 minutes, passing some attractive countryside on the way. Pay 13 RON each way in cash to the driver. Pros of taking the Brasov to Bran Castle bus: It’s cheap! And you can spend as long as you want exploring. Cons of taking the Brasov to Bran Castle bus: It’s the longwinded option. To visit Bran & Rasnov will take you the best part of a day rather than a half-day.

Romanian countryside

#4 Brasov to Dracula’s Castle by taxi

Although I didn’t take this option myself, I’ve since heard you can arrange day / half-day rates with local taxi drivers who will take you from Brasov to Bran for around €20. Uber is also available in Brasov as well as a few local taxi apps like Bratax, CleverTaxi and StarTaxi. Try entering Bran as your destination and see if they will take you all the way. If so, ask them to stick around because it may be hard to hail a ride back from sleepy Bran town. Pros of taking a taxi to Bran Castle from Brasov: It’s cheaper than a day tour if you can get a group together. Cons of taking a taxi to Bran Castle from Brasov: Not an affordable option for solo travellers.

Arriving at Dracula’s Castle

The bus from Brasov to Bran Castle dropped me in Bran Village, virtually outside the castle. I mused that this small settlement would be sleepy if it weren’t for the popularity of Dracula. Nowadays, it feels busy with tourists stopping for coffee and lunch after their visit to Bran Castle. I can’t imagine what the locals think… but at least there’s coffee at every corner!

Things to see and do at Dracula’s Castle

Now we’ve covered how to get to Bran Castle, what should you do there? Bran Castle is an easy place to sightsee because you can follow the castle interior round in a loop, reading informative boards about the history of the castle and coming out where you started. I enjoyed seeing preserved bedrooms of the royals and looking out over the Romanian countryside from pretty courtyards.

queens bedroom

I’d say the full circuit of Bran Castle takes about 1.5 hours. I know the tour groups spend 1 hour here. I don’t doubt you can see it in this time but if you’re a slow traveller like me who takes a million photos, you may find them a bit rushed. After touring the Castle, you can wander the peaceful grounds and snap photos of the imposing castle from the outside.

Useful info for visiting Bran Castle from Brasov

Entrance is 45 RON per person or 25/30/10 for students/seniors/children. Opening hours are Monday 12-6pm, Tues-Sun, 9am-6pm (apart from in the winter season). Last entry is 6pm in summer and 4pm in winter (October to March). Get there early at the weekend, especially during summer months when it gets ridiculously busy. I caught the 8am bus to arrive for the opening time of 9am. I still waited in a queue! Bus tip: Check the bus timetable when you arrive and time your visit around when you want to leave. Otherwise, you may have to wait 30 minutes for the next bus.

Facts about Bran Castle

  • The Castle’s highest point measures 762 metres
  • There are over 60 rooms inside
  • There are a few secret passages that were used in the castle’s heyday, one of which you can walk through during your visit.

Dracula – or the lack of!

I really enjoyed my visit from Brasov to Dracula’s Castle but if you’re hoping to see any Dracula quirks, you might be disappointed. Romania doesn’t massively capitalise on this type of tourism. There was one information board in the Castle mentioning Vlad Tepes but honestly, you’ll learn more by reading my Dracula info above ^ The information at Bran Castle is geared towards the ancient royals who resided here. No vampires today, sorry!

Getting back to Brasov from Bran Castle by bus

The bus from Brasov to Bran returns every 30 minutes in the week and hourly on weekends. Simply reboard the bus in the same place it dropped you and ride it back to Autogara 2 on the outskirts of Brasov. From here, jump aboard a local bus to the city centre, call an Uber or walk for 35 minutes.

Visiting Rasnov Citadel

Rasnov Citadel Romania

After visiting Dracula’s Castle from Brasov, there’s another countryside fortress you can easily visit on your way back. Rasnov Citadel is halfway between Brasov and Bran. You’ll pass it on the way there but I’d recommend seeing Dracula’s Castle first before the crowds arrive, then stopping at Rasnov on the way home. From Rasnov town, walk towards the towering Citadel. If you don’t fancy the steep climb to the top, hop aboard the cable car. Here you can explore the citadel, learn about the history and spy unrivalled views over Romania. Entry details: Entry is 12 RON (student price 6 RON). Important note – Rasnov Citadel is closed for renovation during 2021.

Take a tour including Rasnov & Bran.

Brasov to Rasnov by bus: Take the bus mentioned above from Autogara 2 and get off in Rasnov (the stop before Bran Castle). Bran to Rasnov by bus: If you’re on the way back from visiting Dracula’s Castle, find the Bran Castle to Brasov bus. Get off when you reach the town of Rasnov. It should be obvious when you arrive because a load of people will get off the bus. Alternatively, have Google Maps open on your phone. Rasnov to Brasov by bus: board the bus destined for Brasov (from the stop you got off when coming from Bran). Ride it back to Autogara 2 station in Brasov.

For everything to do, see & eat back in Brasov, read my Brasov guide & itinerary .

Peles Castle

Arguably Romania’s most beautiful castle is Peles, a 1.5-hour drive from Brasov. If you’re keen to see this majestic castle surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, take a castles day tour (Bran, Rasnov and Peles) from Brasov .

The ‘real’ Dracula’s Castle

The castle where Vlad Tepes really lived is still standing in Romania. Most tourists don’t know about the ‘real Dracula’s Castle’ (well, if you take seriously the link between Count Dracula and real-life Vlad Tepes). Poenari Castle lies near the famous Transfagarasan Road and can be visited on a day trip from Brasov . It’s not as well preserved or impressive as Bran Castle but historians and vampire fans may want to have it on their radar.

Thanks for reading my Brasov to Bran Castle guide

I hope you have a better idea of how to get to Dracula’s Castle and what to do there. Although it’s not really linked to Dracula, you wouldn’t want to miss it.

How to Get from Brasov to Bran Castle in 2024

The small village of Bran is home to one of the most famous castles in Romania . Bran Castle is steeped in myths and legends surrounding Dracula thanks to associations with Vlad “Dracul” Tepes the Impaler. But how to get from Brasov to Bran Castle?

There are three main ways to get from Brasov to Bran Castle. The first is to take the Brasov to Bran Castle bus which runs hourly between Autogara 2 in Brasov and Bran. The second is to take a taxi, which is the quickest way, and the third is to take a tour.

I first visited Bran from Brasov in 2019 and returned in 2023 to film a documentary about dark tourism at the castle. I have travelled between the two using both taxis and buses and will tell you the most up-to-date information from my recent visit.

Boring stuff: I have visited each of the places I recommend and give you my honest opinion, warts and all. All photos are my own unless otherwise stated and may not be reproduced without permission. Affiliate links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Brasov to Bran Bus - The Castle

Romania is one of the wildest and most remote parts of Europe where bears and wolves still prowl the ancient forests and villagers till the fields with horse and plow.

It wasn’t hard to see why Bram Stoker set his bestselling horror novel here and it seems that little has changed in the 120 years since it was written.

Ways to Get From Brasov to Bran Castle

1. Take the Brasov to Bran Castle Bus (Cheapest Option)

Buses run from Brasov to Bran every hour and the journey time is around 45 minutes . The ticket costs just 13 Lei ($2.88) and can be bought directly on the bus. The route follows a new highway but the mountainous scenery is impressive.

I took the bus from Brasov to Bran in 2019 and again in 2023 (though in reverse as I took a taxi there on my most recent visit). The buses are not new, but the ride is comfortable enough and plenty warm (it was snowing outside).

The bus leaves from the Autogara 2 Bus Station on the outskirts of the town. Click here for directions . The buses run hourly between 9am and 7pm. You can find the latest timetable here .

2. Take a Taxi from Brasov to Bran (Quickest Option)

The quickest way to get from Brasov to Bran Castle is to take a taxi, but it’s not cheap. Taxis will want to charge double the fare as they can’t guarantee a return pickup, but personally, I think this is a con). In April 2023 the meter fare was 110 Lei ($24) but I was charged double even though I returned by bus.

Taking a taxi is by far the quickest way to get to the castle as it takes around 35 minutes from Brasov old town. You can try using a ridesharing app like Uber or Bolt to get a better price (I don’t have Uber and was running late so I chose a local cab company).

Brasov to Bran Castle

The village of Bran itself has little to offer save for the castle, a few restaurants and hundreds of stalls selling kitsch Dracula souvenirs (of which I bought more than my fair share).

The village is pleasant enough and set in beautiful mountain and forest scenery but I would advise coming as a day trip from Brasov rather than spending a night there as there is not a lot to see or do once you have seen the castle.

The Legend of Dracula

Vlad Dracul

The story of Count Dracula was written in 1897 and is a classic gothic horror tale that gave rise to the vampire mythos. Bram Stoker ’s Dracula was a fictional Transylvanian Prince (or Voivod) who was loosely based on the real-life Vlad Dracul (also known as Vlad Tepes and Vlad the Impaler).

Although Vlad Dracul never lived at Bran Castle, Stoker drew inspiration from a description of the castle which seemed to fit his idea perfectly.

Thanks Steve, my problem is single traveller and having to pay double for tours. I want to see Peles castle, Bran Castle, Rasnov Fortress and Sinai Monastery. I am based in Brasov and then travel to Bucharest. I don’t like to backtrack but it looks like I see rasnov and bran one day and sinaia on my way to Bucharest. Does that make sense. History of Bran Castle

The construction of Bran Castle was completed in 1388. It was built on a steep cliff located between Măgura and Dealul Cetăţii (fortified town’s hill), offering a magnificent view of the nearby hills, Moeciu Valley, and Valea Bârsei. The castle had two main functions; it served as a customs point where 3% of goods passing in and out of Transylvania were held, and as a fortress. Being situated at the Eastern border of Transylvania, the castle was used to stop the expansion of the Ottoman Empire.

On April 25, 1651, Brasov sold the castle to George II Rackoczi. This was after the city had extended the castle’s lease with the Princes of Transylvania several times, even after the Ottoman conquest of the Hungarian kingdom in 1541. Although Transylvania became part of the Habsburg Empire in 1687, the promises made by the Princes of Transylvania, including the 1651 sale of the castle, were reconfirmed by the Leopold Diploma.

In 1836, Bran Castle’s military and commercial significance was lost when the border between Transylvania and Wallachia was relocated to the mountains at Pajura. Despite no longer serving as a border and customs point for Austro-Hungary, the castle remained an administrative center.

Bran Castle Interior

Royal Residence

Following the end of World War I in 1918, Transylvania became a part of Greater Romania. On December 1st, 1920, the citizens of Brasov unanimously decided to offer the castle to Queen Maria of Romania. The castle, which was restored by Queen Maria, became a favorite residence of the royal family.

In 1948, Princess Ileana and her family were forced to leave Romania due to the newly installed communist regime. After years of legal proceedings, on May 18, 2006, the castle was legally returned to the heirs of Princess Ileana of Romania and Archduke Anton of Austria. However, the Romanian Government, through the Ministry of Culture, provisionally administered the castle for another three years.

Dracula's Castle

During his first reign in 1448 and through the beginning of his next reign, Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes) formed an alliance with Bran and Brasov. This alliance was requested by the Princes of Transylvania in order to handle the anti-Ottoman resistance at the border.

However, the alliance failed during Vlad Tepes’s second reign from 1456 to 1462. His army passed through Bran in early 1459 to attack Brasov, in order to settle a conflict between the Wallachia Voivode and the Saxons, who requested higher customs taxes and supported his opponent for the throne.

Vlad the Impaler burned the city’s suburbs and murdered hundreds of Saxons from Transylvania, provoking the Saxon community to seek revenge by later mentioning in reports that the Voivode was a tyrant and extremely ruthless.

Architecture of Bran Castle

Bran Castle’s architecture has been shaped throughout its 600-year history. The style of the castle is dominated by massive Gothic elements, and its design is irregular due to the configuration of the rock on which it was built. The castle’s building materials include river cobblestones, bricks, and wood.

During the first architectural phase, from 1378 to 1380, the castle had an angled tower on the west side. Since at least 1535, the citadel has had three defense towers located on the northern, eastern, and western sides. The Round Powder Tower was rebuilt after exploding in 1593.

According to travelers who visited the castle in the 16th century, the entrance to the fortress was on the southern side and featured a movable stair. On the south side, the massive curtain wall had two levels of openings facing the road. Additionally, two parallel walls were constructed in the valley, which, along with the building next to the cliff, enclosed the path.

Renovations

The Castle has suffered damage over time, often due to sieges and natural disasters.

The castle was renovated during the reign of Gabriel Bethlen between 1613 and 1629. Significantly, the gate tower, the round tower, and the donjon were all restored. In 1723, the northern tower of the castle was fully renovated, as evidenced by an inscription. Between 1883 and 1886, at the request of the Brasov inhabitants, damage caused during the Revolution of 1848 and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 was repaired and other restoration work was carried out.

The castle’s most recent restoration works, which began in 1987, were completed in 1993.

Brasov to Bran Castle Romania: Day trip to see “Dracula’s Castle”

Where is Bran Castle? It's in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, in Transylvania.

When you hear “Transylvania,” you probably think “vampires.” Known as the birthplace of Dracula, this region of Romania is famous worldwide for its castles and mystique. And there’s no better place to start exploring than Bran Castle — the real-life Dracula’s Castle. Bran is an easy side trip from Brasov, the cultural heart of Transylvania. In this post, I’ll walk you through how to do a day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle!

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you decide to purchase through these links, I receive a percentage of the sale at no additional cost to you, which helps me keep this site up and running.

The Dracula legend and a brief history of Bran Castle

The "Dracula Castle" earned its nickname because it's the castle in Transylvania that most closely resembles the one in the novel.

The vampire Dracula may be a legend emerging from a 19th-century novel . But the character was based on Vlad the Impaler, a military leader in 15th-century Romania.

Vlad the Impaler was a Christian leader affiliated with the Roman church during the Crusades. As Ottoman armies passed through his territory, he wreaked havoc on them. Some estimates say he killed over 80,000 people , including 20,000 who he impaled publicly.

Based on the territory Vlad the Impaler was responsible for, it’s reasonable to believe that he regularly traveled from Brasov to Bran Castle . He may even have staged campaigns there, and some locals say he was imprisoned there. The castle was an important military fortress throughout the Crusades and into the 1800’s, so these stories are plausible, but little historical documentation exists.

However, the castle’s connection to the Dracula legend is a bit more tenuous. Bram Stoker, the novelist who wrote Dracula, never visited Romania. He described Dracula’s residence as a castle in the Carpathian Mountains, and drew on local Transylvanian legends to develop the concept of a vampire.

Romanians know Bran Castle more as a royal residence in the early 20th century, which it became in the early 20th century. Queen Marie spent much of her time here in the 1940’s.

Today, Bran Castle is known as “Dracula’s Castle” largely because of Vlad the Impaler’s use of it, plus the fact that it’s the only castle in Transylvania that closely matches Stoker’s description of Dracula’s castle.

How much time do you need for a day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle?

If you visit Bran Castle from Bucharest it'll take you a whole day, while it's only a half-day trip from Brasov.

Bran Castle is one of the most popular castles to visit in Romania. It’s very accessible even without your own car. Plus, who  doesn’t  want to say they’ve seen Dracula’s castle (even if that statement is a bit dubious)?

If you’re tight on time during your Romania trip , you could easily fit in a trip to Bran Castle in half a day. You could take the bus there in the morning, explore for a few hours, have lunch in town, and then head back to Brasov. You could even fit in a stop in Rasnov to see another great castle on your way back.

If you have more time, Bran is a good base to do some surrounding hikes into the mountains. Ask at your hostel or guesthouse in Brasov for maps. You could also extend your day-trip and tack on a visit to Zarnesti, the base for hikes into the gorgeous Piatra Craiului National Park.

If your Romania itinerary is  really  tight, you could even do a day trip from Bucharest to Bran Castle. This would be a full day adventure. I wouldn’t really recommend it though, since Transylvania has so many other great things to see if you take your time.

How to get from Brasov to Bran Castle

Even if you take a taxi from Brasov to Bran Castle, it'll still take awhile because of livestock in the road.

The easiest way to get from Brasov to Bran Castle is to drive yourself. This would be a quick 30-minute drive along good paved roads. Traffic can be a bit slow, but that’s just life in rural Romania. You can rent a car in Brasov for around $30 a day. Alternatively, you could take a taxi to Bran Castle, but it would be astronomically expensive.

However, it’s almost as easy and way cheaper to do the trip from Brasov to Bran Castle on public transportation.

The first step is getting to Bus Station 2 in Brasov. This is not the large bus station next to the train station — it’s a much smaller station 1 km north. It’s a pleasant walk from the center, or you can take Bus 12. The lovely Crisandy Hostel is a short walk away and a great base for visiting Brasov.

When you get to the bus station, ask someone for the bus to Bran. They’ll say “Bran-Moieciu” on them. Pay your 7 lei for a ticket and hop onboard.

The ride from Brasov to Bran Castle takes about an hour, through idyllic Transylvanian countryside. You’ll pass farmers herding sheep and goats — often right in the middle of the road! — and you’ll get some lovely views of the Carpathian Mountains.

The bus stops just outside the Bran town center. It’ll be very obvious when you’ve arrived. You’ll suddenly be surrounded by large tour groups, kitschy souvenir stalls, and hawkers selling giant pretzels. Get off at the next stop and take note of where it is for when you want to go back.

Bran Castle is a short uphill walk from the town center — you’ll see the castle from the main road (it’s totally unmissable).

What to do in Bran

If you buy Bran Castle tickets, you'll get great views of the Carpathian Mountains.

Most things to do in Bran involve visiting the castle and getting a number of different perspectives on it.

First, take some time to admire the views from outside — from all angles. The castle is extremely photogenic. Some of the best spots are from the balconies of restaurants and cafes in town, from some of the roads leading up the hill behind it, and from the park in the town center.

Really, the outside is far more impressive than the interior. If you’re on a tight budget on your Romania travels, it’s still worth traveling from Brasov to Bran Castle just to get some photos from outside. The architectural style is Gothic — it was designed to look imposing, and it definitely delivers.

But if you want to see more, shell out the 40 lei for admission (students with a valid ID get in for 25 lei). Inside you can further admire the architecture. The castle houses a small museum with an emphasis on its time as a royal residence in the early 1900’s, but it’s totally skippable.

The biggest reason to buy a ticket to go inside isn’t the museum. It’s actually the incredible views over the Carpathian Mountains that you can get from the terrace.

Food and drink for your Brasov to Bran Castle day trip

A Dracula's Castle tour unfortunately doesn't mean you'll get great food -- but the giant pretzels are good.

Bran isn’t exactly a food-lover’s paradise. After all, most tourists pass through in a morning and aren’t likely to come back.

However, you can still find some good cafes to have a cup of coffee with a great view of the castle. In particular, look for places with a second-floor balcony — perfect for photography.

If you get hungry, stop in at the market opposite the castle for a snack. Alternatively, pick up a giant pretzel from one of the vendors selling them on the street — delicious, and it won’t cost you more than a few lei. If you are planning to drive or take the bus to Rasnov to see the fortress, you’re better off having lunch in Bran — Rasnov has even fewer options.

Going back to Brasov

Rasnov Castle is between Brasov and Bran and makes an easy stop by bus or car.

After you finish exploring Bran Castle and the town itself, you’re ready to head back to Brasov.

The route is super-simple — just go back to where your bus dropped you off and wait for one to arrive. You won’t have to wait more than 30 minutes. Confirm with the driver that they’re heading to Brasov (not all the buses are marked), pay your 7 lei and take a seat.

Buses get pretty crowded starting around 11 am. You may have to stand for at least part of the way back.

If you want to extend your day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle, you can also visit the medieval fortress of Rasnov . Hop on a Brasnov-bound bus, but ask the driver to drop you off in Rasnov town. It’s a short walk to the fortress, or you can take a cable car.

Not into public transportation? No worries! Take a tour of Bran Castle.

After your Dracula's Castle tour you may also get to visit the bear sanctuary near Zarnesti.

Sometimes you just want things to be easy when you’re on holiday. I get it — sitting around waiting for a bus, trying to figure out where to get off — it’s a hassle. While the Brasov to Bran Castle route is pretty straightforward, there is an option if you don’t want to do it on your own.

A few agencies offer  tours of Bran Castle from Brasov . They take in a few nearby sights as well, including the bear sanctuary near Zarnesti.

Tours aren’t the most budget-friendly way to go. It’ll cost you ten times what it would cost to go independently. But you won’t have to worry about the language barrier or confusing public transportation, and you’ll get to see a bit more of the Romanian countryside.

However you choose to travel, a day trip to Bran Castle — Dracula’s castle itself — will surely be one of your top memories of Romania. Don’t miss the chance to explore one of the top attractions in Transylvania!

One of the most inspiring Romanian day trips that you can take is undoubtedly a trip to the famous Bran Castle. Built-in the 13th century as a fortress to protect the border between Wallachia and Transylvania, the castle towers over this border, perched almost precariously atop a slender and tall outcrop of rock. Looking almost as though it grew out of the stone itself, Bran Castle is one of the most delightfully and beautifully gothic buildings in all of Eastern Europe.

Long associated with the Dracula legend, it is often the first place people want to go when they’re ready to take a day trip from Brasov. While the infamous Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), who inspired the Dracula myth, is thought to have never set foot in the castle, this particular structure best matches the description Bram Stoker gives of Dracula’s castle in the novel meaning you will find no end to the fun Dracula souvenirs and themed events there.

Inside the castle, you can enjoy stunning views over Bran and see some of Queen Marie’s most prized furniture, all in a traditional folk style. The town of Bran itself is lovely with quaint houses, shops, and plenty of places to find some traditional Romania food and drink.

Exploring Transylvania is one of the best things to do in Romania and Bran Castle is a perfect starting point! Luckily it is very easy to get Brasov to Bran Castle by public transport or even by car if you’d rather drive. Find out how

Brasov to Bran Castle by Bus

Getting from Brasov to Bran Castle by public transport is simple, in fact, the hardest part is getting to the bus station since it’s a little outside the city centre. You can walk it in about forty minutes but the easiest way to get there is by taking an Uber (or the number five bus) from the city centre. Once you get to Auto Gara 2, you will need to buy a ticket. To avoid confusion, the bus station is also the Brasov train station but has a separate name.

There are kiosks just in front of the train station entrance, next to where the buses wait and you can buy a ticket from one of the kiosks (they have English signs). Alternatively, you can wait for the bus to Bran to show up and buy your ticket from the driver; just make sure you have cash for either method. Buses come twice an hour, on the hour and half past the hour but, of course, they are sometimes late. Luckily, we didn’t encounter this and found all of the buses in Romania to be punctual!

The tickets cost about 8 lei each way (under two euros). Once you hop off the bus, you will be able to see the imposing castle looming ahead so you won’t get lost. Getting from Brasov to Bran Castle by bus couldn’t be easier. There isn’t a train available so public transport wise, the bus is your best and cheapest option.

Brasov to Bran Castle by Car

Hiring a car in Romania is really easy but the traffic can be quite bad so it is best to set out early if you want to avoid the traffic. Driving in Transylvania is a lot more relaxed than in and around Bucharest so it’s much more suited to people who are less confident on the road but I would still say be wary of sudden lane-changers and people trying to overtake you. Driving gets quite passionate in Romania. Make sure you have travel insurance, I highly recommend World Nomads for a comprehensive plan!

However, it is a gorgeous drive through mountains and fields and there are plenty of villages around Bran Castle if you’d like to make use of the car. I3I’d definitely recommend renting if you are able. As it is only a 30km drive, you will be there in under an hour making this a quick and easy day trip from Brasov. You essentially follow highway 73 the entire way and it is very easy to pull off to visit the stunning Rasnov Fortress on the way there or back. You will be pulling off the highway onto road E68 for the final leg. There are gas stations and services along the way if you need anything.

Once you get there, there is free parking on the streets around the castle but there are also paid carparks within five minutes’ walk of the castle. These cost less than a euro per hour and you shouldn’t have trouble getting a space.

Tip: If you don’t want to drive in Romania, you can also consider taking a taxi which will work out more cost-effective than a tour if you are travelling as a group. This will also give you a degree of flexibility. It costs about 20€ each way and you can use Uber, the Bratax Taxi App or ask your accommodation to book one for you.

Useful Information About Bran Castle

Bran Castle is open between 9:00 – 18:00 every day but they close two hours early during the colder months (October to February) so make sure you leave yourself plenty of time. You will need a couple of hours to explore the castle properly. A ticket costs 8.60 euro, and they hold plenty of extra events and festivals throughout the year (particularly at Halloween), so make sure you check their website . T

hey have a restaurant at the base of the castle which serves wonderful soups and coffee at standard prices if you want somewhere to sit down, otherwise, there are plenty of delicious street food kiosks surrounding the castle. You can even take a picnic since the ground are free to walk and sit in. The walk up and down from the castle is quite steep and a bit slippery in Winter so make sure you wear decent shoes!

Top tip: If you have time, walk over to the resting place of Queen Marie’s heart at Inima Regina Maria. You can carefully climb the hill leading from the tomb and get an amazing view over Bran Castle.

How to get to Bran Castle from Brasov

Bran Castle Dracula Castle View Point Sarah Latham Copyright

Bran Castle is on the list for almost every person visiting Romania and Transylvania. Famous for its connection to Dracula (it has won the title of ‘Dracula’s Castle’), this castle attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. While you can visit Bran Castle by a day tour from Brasov or Bucharest or by your own rental car, one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to get to Bran Castle from Brasov is by bus. Read on to discover how to get to Bran Castle from Brasov.

How to get to Bran Castle from Brasov by bus

There is a public bus that leaves from Brasov to Bran from Autogara Bartolomeu (otherwise known as ‘Bus Station 2’). This bus station is on the Brasov Train Station side of town, so a bit out of the way from the main Brasov tourist area but is very easy to get to. You can find its location on Google Maps here .

How to get to the Brasov Bus Station Autogara 2

You can either get one of the local Brasov buses ( information found here ), an Uber (these are quite cheap in Romania – you can get an Uber estimate here ) or walk to Autogara 2 Bus Station in Brasov. I love walking so I chose to walk from my accommodation in Brasov (I stayed at the ‘ Secret Boutique Hostel ‘ while in Brasov and highly recommend). The walk took about 35 minutes and was nothing special at all, just through the main streets of Brasov; however, it was easy and flat the whole way.

The Bus Station in Brasov – What you need to know

I could’ve missed my bus if I didn’t realise my mistake so wanting to share here just in case anyone else is like me. Out the front of the bus station in Brasov is a bus stop – however, this bus stop is for local buses and is not the bus stop for buses that will take you to Bran Castle from Brasov! I waited here for a little bit before spying other people entering the bus station and clocking I was at the wrong spot.

How to get to Bran Castle from Brasov Sarah Latham

Once you’ve found the station though, it’s pretty obvious it’s a bus station -which made me feel a little silly that I had been standing out the front next to the local bus stop!

I arrived before the first bus to Bran Castle from Brasov for the day departed at 8am. I found that there were a few locals around, although, no one spoke English. With the help of my phone using Google Translate and a photo of Bran Castle though the locals were more than happy to confirm the bus I thought was heading to Bran at 8am was indeed heading to Bran at 8am. The bus is clearly labelled (but after making my error with the local bus stop I was erring on the side of caution)

Brasov to Bran Castle Ticket Prices

I visited Bran Castle in September 2022 and the first thing I want to stress about visiting Bran Castle from Brasov is that almost all the blogs I’d read on prices about how to get to Bran Castle from Brasov by bus were out of date. Inflation has hit the world hard (please hope that one day someone in the future is reading this and going oh yeah that was a time, glad it’s back to normal – please haha) and Romania is not immune to inflation. When I visited Bran Castle from Brasov bus tickets had increased quite a lot in price (however, if you’ve come from a Western country you will still consider it cheap). In September 2022, a one way bus ticket was 13 Lei. Please also note that my blog here may even be out of date and you may pay more when you visit.

Buy your bus ticket to Bran Castle from Brasov (and to Brasov from Bran Castle) directly from the bus driver in cash.

Brasov to Bran Castle Bus Times

Again, a lot of blogs I read online are out of date on bus times as well as prices (and even the bus directions on the official Bran Castle website are out of date). When I visited in September 2022 the bus from Brasov left to Bran every hour ( not every half an hour as other blogs have said). I’m not sure if this is a temporary timetable after lockdown as tourists return but it seems like a permanent change. So you will need to plan your day around slightly further apart bus timetables.

When I visited the first bus to Bran Castle from Brasov left at 8am. This was great timing as the bus to Bran Castle from Brasov takes about 40 minutes. Bran Castle doesn’t open until 9am (Tuesday – Sunday, it opens at midday on Mondays) so you arrive with plenty of time to walk to the castle entrance.

Where you arrive in Bran

It is a good idea to have a working phone while in Romania as you can track where you are on the bus between Brasov and Bran to know when to get off. The bus will drop you off right in the centre of Bran, with visuals of Bran Castle. Just follow the road along until you come to the clearly marked Bran Castle entrance (there are also a lot of tourist market stalls to indicate you’re at the entrance, of course!). You can buy your tickets at the castle entrance or purchase them in advance online here .

The Returning Bus: Bran to Brasov

As mentioned above, a working phone is very helpful in Romania and I used Google Translate to ask the bus driver when the return bus times would be and to confirm the return bus stop location, which he kindly wrote down and pointed out where the bus would return to Brasov from.

How to get to Bran Castle from Brasov Sarah Latham

I actually rejoined the bus to return to Brasov for the day at a different spot after walking slightly out of Bran in the direction of Brasov to find a viewpoint of the castle (suggested read: The best spots to view Bran Castle ). I knew there was a bus stop near due to taking note on the way in as to where the bus stopped on the way in. While my 8am Tuesday bus to Bran Castle from Brasov was relatively empty, the returning Bran to Brasov bus at 1230pm was a lot busier, and there were people standing as we got closer to Brasov. The whole day ran very smoothly and getting a bus to Bran Castle from Brasov is definitely a cost-effective (and freeing – no tour itinerary and no tour crowds! Avoiding the main crowds and tour buses was a major plus of this method) way to visit Bran Castle.

Where to stay in Brasov

If you’re visiting Bran Castle from Brasov, it’s likely you’ll need accommodation. I stayed at one of the best hostels I’ve ever been to in Brasov: Secret Boutique Hostel . The place was spotless, welcoming and the hostel beds were double beds! An extra win. If you’re looking for more than a hostel, you can find a range of Brasov hotels here .

A Trip From Brasov To Bran Castle

How to plan the perfect half day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle. Tips and inspiration to help you make the most of your visit to Castelul Bran.

Last updated on September 4th, 2022 at 02:16 pm

One of the main reasons we decided to plan a trip to Romania in the first place was the country’s castles. The idea of going castle hunting in Transylvania fascinated us. Bran Castle or Castelul Bran, one of the best castles in Romania, was definitely among the ones we wanted to visit. Since picturesque Brasov was the first stop on our Transylvania road trip, a half-day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle was one of the very first things we enjoyed in Romania.

This photo shows the view to the interior courtyard from a balcony in Castelul Bran. We loved our trip from Brasov to Bran Castle!

Is Castelul Bran Dracula’s Castle?

You’ve probably all heard that Bran is Dracula’s Castle. But how accurate is that? Before even going into this, let’s set something straight: Which Dracula are we talking about?

Count Dracula is the fictitious main character in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula . He was a vampire count living in a remote castle in the Carpathian Mountains.

On the other hand,  Vlad Dracula is an actual historical figure. Vlad III was a Romanian ruler in the 15th century, infamous for his cruelty. He was the Prince of the Wallachia region. The name Dracula means son of the devil and it comes from his father Vlad Dracu, which means Vlad the Devil. Vlad III is also known as Vlad Tepes which means Impaler in Romanian. Vlad III used to punish his enemies by, that’s right, impaling them.

This is a photo of Castelul Bran. Plan the perfect half day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle.

So, the only connection between Count Dracula and Vlad Dracula seems to be that Bram Stoker was inspired by the latter to create the former. But how are either the Count or Vlad III connected to Bran Castle? Sorry to break it to you but they’re not. Historians firmly believe that Vlad Dracula never set foot in Bran while Bram Stoker never visited Romania either.

Then why all this fuss? Apparently, Bran Castle fits Stoker’s description of Count Dracula’s castle in the novel more than any other castle in Transylvania. People’s imagination took it from there and the rest is history.

Is there a real Dracula castle then?

The answer is yes. Poenari Castle in Romania is the actual residence of Vlad Dracula. It’s located near the point where the Romanian regions of Transylvania and Wallachia meet. The castle stands above Arges River overlooking the entire area from a completely remote location. It is perched on a steep cliff and ruined at the most part.

To visit, you need to climb more than 1450 steps. We didn’t. At least not this time. We just got a glimpse of the imposing structure from a distance while driving the scenic Transfagarasan Road.

This photo shows Poenari Castle from a distance. This used to be the actual castle where Vlad Dracula resided. Sadly, on a trip from Brasov to Bran Castle, you can't see Dracula's real castle.

How to get from Brasov to Bran Castle Romania

Romania, and especially Transylvania, is one of those destinations that are best enjoyed on a road trip . The countryside is utterly beautiful and there are amazing scenic routes. Furthermore, driving is the only way to visit even the most remote yet gorgeous little villages and towns at one’s own pace.

Castelul Bran is only 30 km away from Brasov and it takes about 35-40′ to get there. If your trip starts in Bucharest, pick up your car from the airport to explore all the castles around Brasov at your own pace! The only problem is the traffic which can be unbearably heavy. Therefore, try to set off as early as possible, especially at weekends. Once at Bran, parking is available near the castle’s entrance and it costs less than 1€/hour (4 lei).

This photo was taken while driving from Brasov to Bran Castle. This route offers amazing views to the enchanting countryside of Transylvania in Romania.

Castelul Bran from Brasov by public transport

If driving is not an option, you can take the bus from Bus Terminal 2 in Brasov to Bran Castle. Buses run every 30′ on weekdays and hourly at weekends. The ride takes about 45′ and it is ridiculously cheap: 7 lei per ride. That is about 2€ for a return trip.

Brasov to Bran Castle by taxi

Taking a taxi from Brasov to Bran Castle is also quite affordable, especially for larger groups. If you’re staying in Brasov, consider downloading the Bratax app. Bratax offers taxi services in air-conditioned cars with English-speaking drivers. We haven’t used them ourselves but we would if we hadn’t rented a car.

Join a guided tour

Joining a guided tour is by far the most hassle-free way to visit Bran Castle from Brasov, alongside Peles Castle and Rasnov Fortress. This option may cost a bit more than others, but you won’t have to worry about things such as transport and entrance tickets. On top of that, you’ll enjoy being shown around three of the best castles in Romania by an expert tour guide.

Bran castle history.

Before we go on to talk to you about our visit to Castelul Bran, let’s say a couple of things about the castle’s history. Bran Fortress was built in the 14th century to protect the border between the regions of Transylvania and Wallachia from Ottoman raids. It belonged to the people of Brasov until 1920 when they decided to donate it to the Romanian royal family.

Castelul Bran became Queen Marie’s favourite residence. She managed to turn the austere fortress into a genuine royal court. Even nowadays, the Queen’s favourite flowers, lilies, decorate the castle’s rooms.  In 1947, the castle became the property of the Romanian state and in 1957 it was turned into a museum. In 2009, Bran Castle was returned to Queen Marie’s grandchildren and it operates as a private museum ever since.

This is a photo of Queen Marie's bedroom in Castelul Bran. Enjoy a half day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle.

Bran Castle tour

As soon as we parked the car and started walking, the sight of Castelul Bran soaring above the tiny town caught our attention. The castle is built at the top of a rock and it’s marvellously imposing. On the way to the castle’s entrance, there are a lot of souvenir shops and snack bars, so the ambience is rather touristy.

Tourist shops around Castelul Bran. A trip from Brasov to Bran Castle, Romania.

Right after the ticket office starts the uphill path to the castle. It takes about 10′ minutes to go all the way up and it’s a bit steep.

This is a photo of the uphill path that leads to the entrance of Castelul Bran. A trip from Brasov to Bran Castle is an amazing idea!

As we ascended, we marvelled at the magnificent park to our right. Formerly the castle’s garden, the park was created at the request of Queen Marie herself. It has two lakes and it’s a heaven of flowers and trees.

This is a photo of the Castelul Bran park. Enjoy a half day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle.

The exterior of the castle does not resemble other more fairytale-like castles in Transylvania. It was initially constructed in Gothic style. Later on, Queen Marie of Romania asked architect Karel Liman to give a more Romantic appearance to her favourite castle.

The interior of Bran Castle reflects mainly the taste of Queen Marie as it has been restored to look exactly the way it did in her time. The various rooms are decorated with furniture and objects from the family’s personal collection.

This is a photo of the music room in Castelul Bran. Plan the perfect half day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle.

Everything is arranged in a way to narrate tales from the personal lives of the royals who inhabited Castelul Bran. We particularly liked the typical Romanian tiled stoves we saw in various rooms.

This photo shows King Ferdinand's bedroom inside Castelul Bran. The most beautiful piece in the room is the traditional Romanian tiled stove. Plan a trip from Brasov to Bran Castle!

The castle features narrow corridors, winding staircases and a couple of exciting secret passages. We particularly liked the interior courtyard of the castle.

This photo shows Maria admiring the charming interior courtyard at Castelul Bran. We enjoyed our trip from Brasov to Bran Castle immensely.

Seeing the castle at a leisurely pace shouldn’t take more than an hour. There are informational plaques everywhere that are easy to read, useful and fun. However, if you want an in-depth walking tour that will let you in on the castle’s secrets, you can book this guided tour.

Bran Castle opening hours and ticket prices

From April 1st to September 30th, the castle is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Opening time on Mondays is at 12:00. However, from October 1st to March 31st closing time is two hours earlier. The full ticket costs 25 lei (5,30€) with concessions applicable to students and senior citizens. Castelul Bran also hosts various events all year round and it’s available for private events as well. For more information on planning your visit to Bran or the upcoming events, visit the castle’s official website .

Other Romanian castles from Brasov

Of course, Bran is not the only castle near Brasov. Peles Castle , as well as Rasnov Fortress, are in the same area and you can visit all three on the same day trip from Brasov . That’s what we did anyway and it was really interesting seeing three completely different castles in one go. The enchantment of Peles and the raw beauty of Rasnov compliment in the best possible way the unique charm of Bran. And our castle hunting in Romania had only just begun!

This is a photo of Peles Castle in Transylvania, Romania. You can visit Peles on the same day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle.

Some taxi firms around the area try to take advantage of tourists and con them. I’ve read multiple times of taxi drivers charging double the price, 110 LEI , for a return journey without guaranteeing a return pickup.

A local tour guide recommended this taxi service , but I recommend going by bus for a cheaper option. Alternatively, utilising ride-sharing services like Uber or Bolt can save some money for your taxi journey.

This journey takes an average of 35 minutes to Bran Castle through the DN73/E574 route . Parking sites are next to the castle if you plan to travel by private car.

Going on a Bran Castle day tour from Brasov

The easiest way to get from Brasov to Bran Castle is by going on a day tour. There are many travel agencies that offer day trips to Bran Castle from Brasov that are stress-free without worrying about commuting.

I highly recommend this option if you are departing from other areas in Romania, like Bucharest or Sibiu. There is no easy travel route from either destination to Bran Castle.

Travel tips and information for your visit to Bran Castle

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Bran Castle from Brasov is during the shoulder months from April to June and September to October.

These months offer the perfect combination of weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful scenery with blossoming greenery around the castle.

I don’t recommend visiting in the summer if you want to avoid the crowds. The same goes for October 31st (Halloween), the busiest time for Bran Castle because of its association with Dracula.

Crowd of visitors queueing along a narrow path leading up to Bran Castle on a sunny day, with a banner reading 'ROYAL BY DAY WICKED BY NIGHT' featuring an image of a crown and bat wings, hinting at a Halloween event at the castle.

I spent 2 hours queuing up to enter the castle and a few hours getting around it, as most parts of it were heavily crowded.

These crowds halted my overall experience as I felt rushed most of the time and had to squeeze past people along the narrow hallways of Bran Castle.

Opening hours, prices and entrance

Bran Castle operates on a seasonal schedule with fewer hours during the colder months.

Opening hours: From October to April 1st, the castle is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from April 1st to September 30th, the hours extend to 6 p.m.

Prices: Adults can enter Bran Castle for 70 LEI (concessions are available), and additional attractions like the Torture Chambers and Time Tunnel are open for an extra cost. Find out more information here .

Tickets can be bought online or at the Bran Castle ticket station, which you’ll find at the bottom of the hill before you head up to Bran Castle.

History of the castle

Bran Castle was first built in 1212 as a wooden castle and then destroyed by the Mongols decades later.

It wasn’t until 1377 that the Transylvanian Saxons rebuilt it as a stone castle to defend themselves against the Ottomans.

Through centuries of battles and takeovers, it fell into the good hands of Queen Marie in 1920, the castle’s biggest advocate. She spent many years renovating the castle to turn it into her dream summer residence.

Bran Castle was continuously passed down through her descendants until it fell out of the royals’ hands during the country’s communist era and became a state-run museum.

Then, in 2006, it was reinstated into royal control and reopened as a museum in 2009 to the public – becoming the Bran Castle we see today.

Exploring The Dracula Phenomenon

The Dracula phenomenon associated with the castle originated from the Bram Stoker novel Dracula, which is loosely based on the historical figure Vlad the Impaler , who served as the ruler of Wallachia in the 15th century.

Although Vlad Dracula never lived in the castle and Bram Stoker never visited it, the author took inspiration from the castle’s gothic and eerie architectural descriptions and Vlad’s fearsome reputation to create the perfect photo-fit depiction for his story.

Little trivia: Vlad the Impaler’s actual residence was Poenari Castle, which visitors can visit on a day trip from Brasov.

Expectations vs reality

Sadly, for Dracula fans, a day trip from Brasov to Bran Castle may be one of disappointment, as the museum primarily focuses on the castle’s history rather than the fascination around Bram Stoker’s fiction.

You won’t find staff with large fangs and yourself getting bitten at the first sight of blood. Have residents sleeping in coffins or magical organs playing as you roam the castle.

The best you can hope for is Dracula T-shirts and mugs in the gift shop at the bottom, although the castle does have that eerie Dracula vibe. I do give it that!

Things to see and do at Dracula’s Castle

1. learn about the history of the castle.

As you roam around Bran Castle, you’ll learn more about the history of the royals who lived there.

On the walls are paintings alongside passages that describe their lives and their status in the royal family.

It was fascinating to see the lavish lifestyle they used to live while here. There are many simple yet well-preserved bedrooms and elegant furniture.

Vintage-style bedroom in Bran Castle, showcasing arched white ceilings, a candelabra, a bed with ornate patterns and a red throw, and a Southwestern rug, bathed in the natural light from a traditional window

2.  See the courtyard

The castle courtyard is the heart of the castle and remains its most popular spot for photography. This area really showcases the brilliance of the interior structure.

A bustling courtyard within Bran Castle with tourists exploring its medieval architecture, including a stone tower and timber balconies adorned with autumn leaves.

During Halloween, the castle courtyard gets decorated with decorations, including pumpkins, scary masks, and everything to make it more spooky.

And, of course, I had to get photos of it.

A vibrant pumpkin sits in the foreground on a wooden ledge with a backdrop of Bran Castle's iconic conical towers, terracotta roofs, and a glimpse of the forested hills under a clear blue sky.

3. Explore the Torture Exhibition

Cost: 20 LEI

The torture exhibition is an additional attraction located along the corridors above the courtyard of Bran Castle.

This exhibition includes a collection of medieval torture instruments, which were historically used across medieval European castles. Some of the most grimacing instruments I saw were the interrogation chair and the Iron Maiden.

Each instrument was gruesome to see and showed the real grim side of Europe’s medieval past.

A medieval wooden torture mask stands open next to a wall displaying an illustration of a woman and several iron cross-shaped wall fixtures, part of the torture exhibition at Bran Castle

4.  Go down to the Time tunnel

Cost: 30 LEI

The time tunnel guides you through a visual depiction of castle history, with each station illuminated by lighting and enhanced with audio effects.

It takes you from the first creation of the castle in 1212 up until Queen Marie’s reign while also diving into the story of Vlad the Impaler.

My favourite part of the tunnel was the elevator. It was unsurprising to hear that it was titled the “Best Special Elevator in the World” in 2019.

You can access The Time Tunnel from inside the courtyard. I recommend only visiting once you’ve explored Bran Castle fully, as the exit takes you out of the castle, and there is no way of getting back in.

5. Explore the village of Bran

Although many come for the castle, the village of Bran has its own charms.

Bran has plenty of markets that sell local cuisine and handcrafted goods alongside many mini museums nearby.

Near the castle is the Bran Village Museum, which showcases Romania’s traditional rural life, with stables and Romanian houses.  It is free to enter!

The Castle Of Horror is also located inside the market and explores more of the town’s folklore around Dracula, taking you through interactive exhibits with plenty of jump scares! It costs 25 Lei to enter.

Not to forget, Bran has plenty of greenery around the castle – lovely for a sit-down or a spot of lunch.

A tranquil park near Bran Castle featuring a cobblestone path leading to a small pond, framed by trees with early autumn foliage in shades of green and yellow, and two distant figures near a bench enjoying the peaceful setting.

Places to visit near Bran Castle

There are so many amazing places in the Transylvanian region near Bran Castle to add to your Brasov itinerary . Here are the most notable locations.

Rasnov is a beautiful little town reminiscent of Brasov, with its medieval and charming ambience.

Similar to Brasov, the town features giant letters spelling out its name perched atop a hill that resembles the famous Hollywood sign. The Rasnov sign is located next to Rasnov Citadel, the town’s medieval fortress.

The fortress is embedded in Rasnov’s medieval history and was the primary strategic defence to help protect the town from sieges.

Visitors can climb up here, or if, like me, you prefer the easier route, there is a cable car for a cost that can take you right up.

Alongside the fascinating museum is this beautiful panorama at the top showcasing the far Romanian greenery.

Panoramic view of a picturesque town from the Rasnov Citadel, showcasing terracotta rooftops, dense housing, and the expansive green plains stretching to distant mountains under a partly cloudy sky.

How to get there: If you plan to visit Bran Castle from Brasov, catch the same bus from Autogara 2 and get off the stop just before you get to Bran Castle. You’ll then arrive by Rasnov.

If you depart from Bran Castle to Brasov, get off at the first stop.

Peles Castle

Cost: 50 LEI (Concessions available)

Peles Castle, located in Sinaia, rivals Bran Castle as one of the most sought-after castles in Romania.

It is one of the most majestic castles I’ve seen and is undoubtedly the biggest in Romania!  It has over 160 rooms, each adorned in an opulent style fit for royalty.

Walking through the castle, you’ll see the finest examples of Neo-Renaissance architecture.

Note:  It can get jam-packed, so I recommend purchasing tickets online to avoid queue times.

View of the historical Peles Castle in Romania, displaying its charming wooden details and spired towers, under a blue sky with fluffy clouds, flanked by green trees.

How to get there: To get from Brasov to Peles Castle, you’ll need to take a train from Brasov to Sinaia station, hop on a bus next to the train station, and then get off just outside the castle.

You can also take a guided tour of Peles Castle, which includes a trip to Rasnov Fortress and Bran Castle from Brasov.

Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti

Cost: 80 LEI (Concessions available)

Libearty Zarnesti is one of Europe’s largest bear enclosures and is the first to open up in Romania.

While visiting, you will have a chance to view bears from various enclosures and learn about their distressing history before wildlife conservation came to fruition.

A brown bear behind a metal fence, seemingly at ease, in the natural surroundings of the Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti, with a backdrop of green trees and scattered autumn leaves on the ground.

How to get there: Unfortunately, there is no public transport route from Brasov or Bran Castle to Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti.

You can take a guided tour from Brasov , which includes a trip to Bran Castle.

Final thoughts

Well, there you have it! Getting from Brasov to Bran Castle by bus, taxi or on a day tour is very easy. With much to explore in the castle, village and the surrounding areas of the Transylvanian region, you’ll be sure to have a well-packed adventure day out.

If you are visiting for Dracula, well, I hope you are not disappointed. Although the castle is not built factually around Bram Stoker’s story, it does depict the eerie architectural elements he fictionally imagined.

From my overall impressions, its mystique and intrigue really do make you feel as if a vampire once lived there. And for that reason alone, you shouldn’t miss it for the world!

There is a small torture museum located on the second floor of the castle. It is placed in a private room, which further leads to smaller rooms and then into a private balcony. Bran Castle Highlights

Narrow Stairway

There is a narrow stairway in the castle that once used to be a secret. This passage allows just one person to fit at a time and connects the first floor to the third. An antique fireplace acted as the secret entrance to the stairway.

Bran Castle has a lovely round tower that showcases its architecture with its stone and wooden walls. Made in Gothic architecture, the Donjon is one of the biggest highlights of this castle. Unfortunately, the old tower that stood here was struck by lightning and the new, remarkably well-kept tower, dates from 1593.

Ancient Items

Bran Castle has a remarkable connection of various items within. Queen Marie collected sets of china, books, statues and icons. King Ferdinand’s room has a lovely collection of ornate furniture, a set of daggers and royal treasures. You can also find some Romanian pottery, paintings, hand-carved fixtures around the castle and other subtle details.

Time Tunnel

Constructed in a 59-meter-deep old well that was later converted into an elevator shaft, the Time Tunnel at Bran Castle is a horizontal gallery that features some of Romania’s scariest mythological creatures. It is also the longest-approved ride between two elevator stops (31.5 meters) in the area.

Old Water Well

There is an old water well at Bran Castle that isn’t a well anymore. You can, however, explore the top of this well, which just functions as a decorative feature now. When the fortress was built in the 1400s, a 60-foot-deep well was drilled through solid rock, and there also used to be a secret room right above the water level that once held the castle’s treasures.

Queen Marie’s Heart

After the beloved Queen Marie passed away, her heart was placed in a chapel close to the castle upon her request. She wanted to remain close to her home. You can visit this shrine close across the brook at the edge of the woodland.

Inside Bran Castle >

Bran Castle as Dracula’s Castle

Bran Castle is situated deep in the valleys of Transylvania on the edge of a cliff, and because of its location, this is the only castle that fits the description of the spooky castle that Count Dracula resided in Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. Some people also believe that Vlad the Impaler, the notorious Wallachian Prince, was the inspiration for Count Dracula’s character.

However, Bram Stoker never validated any of these claims. In fact, Bram Stoker never even set foot into Bran Castle. The castle described in the novel was inspired by some illustrations of Bran Castle that Bram Stoker found during his research. Apart from this, there seems to be no other connection between Bran Castle and Dracula’s Castle.

After the castle gained much popularity among enthusiasts for this rumored connection, the government of Romania decided to market the castle as Dracula’s castle to improve tourism.

Brasov and Bran Castle Tour

One Day Tour, Tour in Transylvania

tour brasov to bran castle

  • Booking conditions

This Brasov and Bran Castle Tour is the best choice if you’re planning to explore this legendary castle, combined with a walking tour in the historical center of Brasov, one of the most fascinating in Transylvania. The tour starts from Brasov. Bucharest departures are available upon request.

Designed as a slow-paced alternative that will give you plenty of time to discover these two iconic attractions, this one day tour focuses exclusively on the history of Transylvania.

This is the perfect tour if you want to discover the real Bran Castle, a medieval fortress that Queen Maria and her daughter, Princess Ileana, transformed into a royal residence. The monument has so many amazing stories from their time that no fictional Dracula character is needed to make a Bran Castle Tour more incredible.

We visit Bran Castle in the morning, driving afterward to Brasov for a walking tour of its impressive historical center, one of the must-see attractions of Transylvania.

The Brasov and Bran Castle Tour is available from Monday to Sunday, in English, French, Spanish, and Italian.

Tour also suited for seniors.

This tour can be modified according to your time and points of interest.

We depart from Bucharest in the morning and stop first to visit Bran Castle. We spend the rest of the day in Brasov visiting its top medieval sites.

Bran Castle

The most famous monument in Romania, Bran Castle is actually a strong and impressive 14th-century fortress that became a legendary attraction given its imaginary connections to the myth of Dracula.

The fortress of Bran was one of the most important from the border of Transylvania and Southern Romania, separate entities until the Great Unification of 1918. The fortress became a castle only after Queen Maria received it as a gift after the First World War. Famous for her passion for architecture and decorations, Queen Maria turned the old monument into a spectacular royal castle, conserving nonetheless its medieval look.

She left the castle to her most beloved daughter, Princess Ileana, who lived here during the Second World War, continuing the humanitarian work of her mother as a war nurse.

One of the oldest commercial cities in Romania, Brasov is also one of the citadels founded by the German colonists who settled in Transylvania starting with the 12th century. Its historical center is one of the best attractions in the region, conserving splendid architecture, medieval monuments including old fortification lines, and Gothic monuments.

Monuments that date even from the 13th century attest to its past status of a fortress-city that closed in front of enemy attacks. Among the attractions, we’ll see are the Black Church, the Town Square, the White Tower, the Black Tower, the fortification system, Sforii Street, and many more centuries-old sites.

How to Get From Bucharest to Bran Castle (The Easy Way or the Hard Way)

How to Get From Bucharest to Bran Castle (The Easy Way or the Hard Way)

Bran Castle looms large in many people’s ideal Romania itineraries. Who can blame them? Few castles have such a prominent place in our collective unconscious — even if the Dracula connection is tenuous at best and deceitful marketing at worst.

Still, out of my two weeks traveling around Romania, visiting Bran Castle was an obvious standout. And while I think Bran Castle is best visited while you’re on a larger Transylvania itinerary , including cities such as Sibiu , Brasov , and Targu Mures, I can also understand if you want to do a day trip from Bucharest to Bran Castle if you have limited time in Romania.

Doing a Transylvania day trip from Bucharest is certainly doable, but it’s not easy. The problem is that Romanian transportation is not the most reliable. On my two weeks traversing the country, we slid down one hill due to shoddy brakes before luckily coming to a stop, went on a number of extremely bumpy roads, and ended up delayed for hours due to a shepherd protest.

So, while going from Bucharest to Bran Castle in a day via public transit is definitely doable, you’re going to want to wake up early and pack a bunch of patience with you (also bus snacks, which equal patience in my mind) since things in Romania tend not to ever go quite exactly as planned.

And while generally we are independent travelers who prefer to forge our own way than to take a day tour, due to the distance and logistics of getting from Bucharest to Transylvania, we think that Transylvania tours from Bucharest actually offer great value as a day trip option compared to the cost (and headache) of DIYing it all.

How to Get from Bucharest to Bran Castle by Public Transit (The Hard Way)

Bucharest - Romania Bucharest Nord train aerial

There are a few options when it comes to getting from Bucharest to Bran Castle via public transit.

The best and fastest option would be a combination of train + taxi. Get the train at Bucharest North (Gara de Nord) station. You can buy tickets online here , but it must be six hours before departure, or you can buy them at the station.

If buying online, be sure to enter the names in the Romanian (București Nord for Bucharest; Brașov for Brasov) or it won’t work.

The train times vary between 2.5 hours and 3.5 hours, depending on when it departs and what route it takes. I’d recommend taking the 6:05 AM, 7:00 AM, or 8:05 AM train to give yourself enough time. There’s a big gap between the 8:05 AM train and the next one at 9:55 AM, which is not ideal.

However – even though it says 2.5 hours, don’t rest on that! Sometimes, Romanian trains experience a significant delay, so go early to account for any issues.

tour brasov to bran castle

A ticket should cost 48.6 lei (a little more than $11 USD) as of July 2019, but you’ll get a 5% discount if you book online. I haven’t booked train tickets online before, so I’m not sure if you’d have to print out your ticket or if you could show it on your phone, so keep this in mind when booking.

For a return ticket, you are looking at about $22.50 USD per person for the train plus taxi fare to and from Bran.

I had private transportation between Brasov and Bran so I didn’t need to make this trip myself, but I’ve heard that a taxi between Brasov and Bran costs 80 lei ($19 USD) if you’re a good bargainer. To go back, it should be the same, though if you want the same driver you will also have to pay for his waiting time. Some taxi drivers may refuse to make the trip unless you pay them to wait and use them on the return journey too, so keep this in mind when bargaining with taxis.

tour brasov to bran castle

Using train + taxi for a solo traveler, all in you’re looking at $60.50 USD to do a DIY day trip from Bucharest to Bran Castle, not counting your transit to & from Gara de Nord, meals, entry tickets, or any price gouging you may experience from taxi drivers.

Theoretically, if you’re on a budget, there is also a public bus from the Brasov bus station which goes to Bran. The bus should take about 45 minutes and leaves once an hour on weekends or once every 30 minutes on weekdays. It costs about 10 lei, ($2.50).

However, the Bus Station (Autogara 2) is quite far from the train station, just over 3 kilometers away (about a 45-minute walk), so you’d need to walk a while or take a taxi between the train station and the bus station, so keep that in mind when deciding between bus and taxi.

If you do it this way, walking between the bus station and the train station, you could go from Bucharest to Bran Castle for as little as $27.50 USD, again excluding your transit to and from Gara de Nord, meals, and entry tickets.

How to Get from Bucharest to Bran Castle by Rental Car (The Medium Way)

Theoretically, Bucharest to Bran Castle is only 187 kilometers – not so bad, right? Well, due to road conditions in Romania (and egregious traffic leaving Bucharest), that’s probably closer to 3 hours.

You could rent a car for the day and do an independent trip to Bran Castle from Bucharest, which would make for an adventure, but with rental prices, insurance, and gas, it probably doesn’t make sense economically unless you can gather up a group of 3 or more adventurers to make the trek with you.

However, if you do this, you can stop at a number of other awesome Transylvania sights along the way like Rasnov Citadel, Peles Castle, and more, which makes the journey more worth it.

Pro Tip: We’ve rented cars dozens of times in the Balkans through various search engines and have settled on Discover Cars as the best car rental search engine – it searches over 500 trusted rental companies to find the cheapest price for your rental! Compare prices for car rental in Romania here.

How to Get from Bucharest to Bran Castle (The Easy Way)

If ultimately, your goal is to visit Bran Castle from Bucharest as a day trip in the most stress-free manner possible, a tour is the way to go.

Taking a Bran Castle tour from Bucharest is pretty inexpensive, especially considering that most Transylvania tours from Bucharest don’t just include Bran Castle but also Peles Castle (arguably even more beautiful than Bran!) and sometimes Rasnov Citadel as well. If you’re traveling solo and would have done the taxi option, it’s about the same price (but a lot less hassle) than DIYing it. For those reasons, I highly recommend an organized day trip to Transylvania from Bucharest.

tour brasov to bran castle

If you go for a Bucharest to Bran Castle day trip, I strongly recommend this well-reviewed tour run by TravelMaker, which has over 600 positive reviews with an average score of 4.6/5 stars.

It covers both a Peles Castle and a Bran Castle, aka Dracula Castle, tour (including entry fees, but you’re on your own for lunch). You’ll also get some time to walk around Brasov city before returning to Bucharest in the evening. Check reviews, availability, and prices here.

Note: As per the tour website, “Between 16 September and 15 May, Peles castle is open from Wednesday to Sunday only. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Rasnov Citadel will be visited instead”

So if visiting Peles is a major draw for you when considering your tour, and you are traveling in the off-season, be sure to plan your departure day accordingly, avoiding Monday and Tuesday. Rasnov is really cool, but Peles would be my choice if I had to choose.

This tour looks cheaper on paper, but since it does not include entry fees, you will pay a bit more.

Another choice is to take a tour that covers Bucharest to Bran Castle, Peles Castle, and also Rasnov Fortress (which is awesome and worth a visit!). This is the tour that I recommend that covers all three , although please note when visiting that you will pay to pay for your own entry fees, which will be an additional ~100 lei (40 for Bran, 30 for Peles, 28 for Rasnov) or $24 USD.

tour brasov to bran castle

Ultimately, the choice is yours – whether you want to spend more time in Brasov exploring the Old Town, or to see a third castle (Rasnov) which is in a bit of decay compared to Bran and Peles, but ultimately super cool as well!

Personally, I’d pick the tour covering all three castles since each offer something super unique, but if I wanted more time in Brasov I’d pick the first option .

Bran Castle Cost & Operating Times

Entry to the castle costs 40 lei (about $10 USD), though students are eligible for a discount. From the months of April through September, Bran Castle’s hours are 9 AM to 6 PM. (Mondays throughout the year, it opens at noon, not 9 AM).

In the off-season, from October through the end of March, the hours are 9 AM to 4 PM, so keep this early closing time in mind if doing the public transit choice or personal car rental option from Bucharest.

Organized tours will keep in mind the opening hours and make sure you don’t miss it.

What to Pack for Bucharest & Transylvania

If you’re planning a trip to Romania, you’ll want to pack all the normal essentials, but here are a few things we strongly recommend bringing that may not have crossed your mind.

– A physical guidebook, in paper or on Kindle . We love Lonely Planet Bulgaria & Romania for this region and strongly recommend it to supplement blogs. Blogs are great, but a combination of a blog and a guidebook is key to having the best access to information easily at your fingertips.

– Layers in case of poor weather. We had really bad luck with weather our last trip in Romania – it snowed before Halloween! We always recommend bringing a rainproof jacket like Allison’s personal favorite, the Marmot PreCip , which she has had for years and has held up well to countless abuse over 3+ years of travels. (Here’s a men’s version, too!)

– A water bottle with a filter . While generally, the tap water in big cities in Romania is drinkable, such as in Bucharest and Brasov, we generally recommend using a water bottle with a purifying filter to reduce your plastic consumption and ensure you won’t drink any funny-tasting water on your stomach that could make your trip unpleasant! We recommend the GRAYL water bottle – it filters water perfectly in an instant so that you can even drink from lakes, bad taps, etc.

– Motion sickness pills . Romanian roads are winding and road conditions are not good – not even getting into the drivers, either. If you have a weak stomach like we do, save yourself and bring some non-drowsy motion sickness pills .

– Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, TP & other Balkan transit needs. Bathrooms in the Balkans tend to be… how can we say it?… not so well-stocked. Save yourself the disappointment and bring a mini-rescue pack of wet wipes & hand sanitizer .

– Travel safety items . We think Romania is very safe to travel, but at the same time, it never hurts to be prepared! Some people like to carry money belts , but neither Stephanie or I use these. Instead, we both carry the same PacSafe anti-theft backpack . It has locking zippers, slash-proof construction with metal mesh hidden in the fabric, and tons of other smart security features — all while being cute and stylish enough to be our everyday bag. We recommend it highly for both male and female travelers, as its neutral enough to be unisex. We also strongly recommend travel insurance! Our recommendation is at the bottom of the post.

Budget:  After having a bad experience with the owner of Pura Vida and Little Bucharest, I cannot recommend them to other travelers, especially solo women travelers. Mid-range:   Omega House  is a gorgeous boutique hotel (which also has a few dormitory style rooms if you are a solo traveler with a slightly higher budget). The hotel has beautiful design and a spacious co-working space where you can make use of of Bucharest’s speedy, best-in-Europe WiFi. It is near Piata Romana, my favorite part of Bucharest (and where many of the best coffee shops, bars, and restaurants are located). With a 9.0 rating on Booking.com  (read reviews, see photos, and check availability here) , I’d recommend this for travelers who want a step above a standard hostel without paying a ton

Luxury:  I stayed at the  Grand Hotel Continental  during my first Bucharest trip and I can’t recommend it enough if you have the money to spare. The room was elegantly furnished and the bed was ridiculously comfortable – the comforters and sheets were just so lush. The bathroom and room itself were crazy large and spacious (though the bathroom was oddly modern, to the point where the sink was really confusing and barely usable). I loved being a 10-minute walk away from the Old Town. I actually don’t recommend at all staying in the Old Town itself, because it’s super loud with drunks at all hours of the night. It comes highly recommended by me and others agree, considering it  has a 9.0 rating on Booking.com from others (check reviews and availability here) .

Don’t Forget about Travel Insurance!

I’m sure you’re aware that  travel insurance  is a good idea for traveling in Romania (or really, any part of the world)! Stephanie and I have both been paying customers of  World Nomads  for the last three years. We love the peace of mind it gives us in case of emergencies, accidents, illnesses, theft, or trip cancellation or disruption.

While the Balkans are perfectly safe to travel around, there’s always a risk inherent in everyday travel, so it’s better to play it safe. The saying goes “if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel” is true!
