Hunting in Orlando

Head out with Gator God Zac to hunt public waters around Central Florida. These gator hunts are super exciting and involved hunts targeting and stalking the right specimen, fighting him back to the boat with multiple rods, and taking home a trophy unlike any other! Captain Zac spends most of his time hunting the St. John's River estuary honing in on flow through laks like Lake Monroe, Lake Harney and others. In the state of Florida guns are not allowed to use a firearm at anypoint when killing a gator, and any bait used to attract a gator has to be attached to the boat in the state of Florida so there are no lines set over night. That's where having a profesional guide like Zac comes in handy: Knowledge of the water and the right equipment for the job are essential! He's been doing it for well over 10 years and is the best of the best. Depending on what you want to do Captain Zac either likes to sight cast on them with treble hooks or bait them from afar with beef lung or floating chickens at the end of a rod and reel. Baiting them on rod and reel is especially fun since you get to see the gator wallop your bait! This method is especially productive later in the season when the gators have grown wise to the boats in the area and all too often go under when you get within 300yds. After the gator has crushed and swallowed that beef lung or chicken, you and captain Zac will stalk up on him and throw an initial hook into him to act as an indicator. Applying to much pressure on that first hook will all too often break him off. Once the indicator is secured you and Captain Zac will throw a couple more treble hooks into him and fight him up to the boat. Once he is boat side Captain Zac will use his Bang Stick to dispatch the beast and haul him aboard to head back to the dock! Captain Zac has a handful of tags for these trips, but he highly reccomends his clients bring their own Alligator tag for these trips as well. **If you have you're own tag he will cut out the price you paid for your tag and give you a discounted rate!** Everything else is provided on board like rods, reels, baits, Bang Sticks, ropes, and a cooler for your beverages and snacks. 11'+ Central Florida Gator Hunt

Hunting in Okeechobee

*This trip includes one 9'-9'11" Gator!* Alligator hunting in Florida is not for the timid or faint of heart! Here we provide you with a safe, fun, and exciting alligator hunt year-round. We offer both private and public land alligator hunts. On our private land hunts, we either hunt nuisance gators that are a threat to people or animals on close or surrounding ranches or in our private hunting preserve - which guarantees a harvest. Our private land hunts are “spot and stalk” on a pond or canal. If we find a gator laying on a bank, we will try to sneak up as closely as possible to get a brain kill shot. The size of a gator’s brain is about the size of a golf ball. If we do not see one on a bank but in one of the ponds or canals, then it becomes alligator fishing. At that time the hunter will try to snag the gator and fight it on rod and reel until it tires out and surfaces. At that time, the hunter will take the shot at the gator on the surface. You can use rifle, handgun, bang stick or bow to harvest your alligator. With our public land hunts, the hunter is required to either apply and draw a tag via a state lottery system or purchase a state public land tag from one of our guides when available and in season. These hunts take place on either an air boat or a flats boat with a seasoned gator hunting guide. If you are successful and harvest your gator then we will be able to arrange for the processing of your meat and taxidermy service by a local licensed processor/taxidermist if desired. Read More

Hunting in Crystal River

**Bring your own tag gator hunt** Embark on an adrenaline-fueled Gator Hunt like no other in Crystal River, FL! Led by the fearless Captain Leon, a true expert in alligator hunts, get ready to experience the thrill of a lifetime from August 15th through November 1. Sumnter County is the prime location for this unforgettable adventure, boasting a remarkable 90% success rate. Captain Leon's exceptional skills and knowledge will ensure you have the best chance of a successful hunt, making this a truly rewarding experience. The main game plan is to sneak up on these incredible creatures, throwing a treble hook in their back, and skillfully bringing them to the boat before dispatching them with precision. It's a thrilling challenge that only the most skilled hunters can conquer. But that's not all—Captain Leon's wild technique for handling sketchy alligators is a sight to behold! Instead of creeping up, he'll rig up a beef lung on a rod, open the bail, and haul ass at the gator, going max speed. He plans so that his lower unit is out of the water, and he'll watch the gator go down, dropping the bait on him as he flies past. Most of the time, the gator pops right back up where he was, finds the beef lungs, and chomps. If the gator pops up a ways off, i.e., doesn't see the lung, he tugs on the line to make a splash in the water, and it's almost always game over. Whether you're a seasoned hunter looking for the ultimate challenge or a thrill-seeker eager to experience the heart-pounding rush of a Gator Hunt, Captain Leon has you covered. Spaces are limited, and the remaining tags are disappearing fast, so secure your spot now for an adrenaline-pumping expedition like no other. Prepare for an exhilarating hunt, create memories to last a lifetime, and embrace the untamed beauty of Crystal River's Gator Country! Read More

On this alligator hunt we target the specific size gator that the client is looking for. Expect to glass many alligators in ponds and reservoirs from a distance. 9-10' Central Florida Gator Hunt

Hunting in Okeechobee

*This trip includes one 8'-8'11" Gator!* Alligator hunting in Florida is not for the timid or faint of heart! Read More

In the state of Florida you are not allowed to use a firearm at any point when killing a gator, and any bait used to attract a gator has to be attached to the boat in the state of Florida so there are no lines set over night. That's where having a professional guide like Zac comes in handy: Knowledge of the water and the right equipment for the job are essential! Private Land Alligator Hunts in Florida - Any Weapon Allowed

Guided Florida Alligator Hunts

Guided Florida Alligator Hunts

Southern Outdoor Outfitters is one of the top hunting guides in Florida and offers PRIVATE LAND alligator hunts year-round. We have over 100,000 acres of prime gator hunting habitat. Hunting private land comes with fewer stipulations than hunting public land, as well as far less hunting pressure.

You are welcome to bring your own weapon of choice or use ours. We start the hunt by locating alligators. Once we've spotted some, we judge the size of each one until we find what our client is looking for. Now comes the fun part! We snag the alligator with a fishing pole and a large treble hook, then bring it in to be taken with your choice of weapon. You are shooting at a four-inch target, so a steady hand and sometimes more than one shot is needed to kill these tough dinosaurs.

This is a hunt that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime!

Private Land Alligator Hunting

What Makes Private Land Gator Hunting Better?

The main thing that sets private land alligator hunting apart from public land hunting is the lack of pressure  that is on these animals. This means the gators here have the chance to grow larger than those on public land. With any public land hunting, you are competing against thousands of other hunters which not only makes the hunting harder, but it also means you are far less likely to kill a big alligator.

Public Land vs. Private Land Alligator Hunting

With Southern Outdoor Outfitters, you will be hunting pristine, minimally pressured private land and have the option to shoot as big a gator as you want! We hunt multiple monsters every year and can put you on the trophy of a lifetime. We are one of the only hunting outfitters in Florida to offer this kind of hunting! Most other outfitters only hunt public land or small pieces of private land; many of them don't give you much of an option on the size of gator you hunt.

If you choose to hunt alligators on public land without a guide, you also have to apply for a lottery tag whereas private land hunts allow you to hunt whenever you want using our allotted tags.

Gator Hunting Methods on Private Land in FL: Any Weapon

There's one more main difference - on private land in Florida, you can use ANY WEAPON to hunt gators! Public land limits you to only using bang sticks, but if you hunt with us on our private gator grounds, you get to choose! Our customers can use a rifle, muzzleloader, pistol/handgun, bow, crossbow, or even primal weapons like a spear! For safety reasons, Florida limits this option to daylight hours (bang sticks must be used at night), but most of our success takes place during daylight hours due to the lack of pressure.

If you are looking for an unrestricted hunt for monster alligators with guaranteed success, private land is for you!

Guide to Alligator Hunting in Florida

gator hunting trips florida

Alligator conservation is a success story in Florida. The alligator population in this state is estimated at 1.3 million alligators of every size and has been stable for many years.  The FWC established an annual statewide recreational alligator harvest opportunity in 1988 that has been recognized as a model program for the sustainable use of a renewable natural resource.

In addition to providing permit holders with a much desired opportunity to experience alligator hunting in Florida, alligator meat is a delicious and healthy choice. In addition, the hide can be tanned and made into leather products.

Each year, alligator management units are established with harvest quotas that provide recreational opportunities and maintain alligator populations at targeted levels. Recreational hunting is just one part of the FWC’s overall approach to managing the alligator population.

Arcadia Florida - Diverse Hunting and Fishing Opportunities

Gator Hunting: Gator hunting is an exciting experience that often takes place at night, adding an extra layer of excitement and mystery. Hunters use various methods such as bowhunting, harpooning, or using a bang stick. It's a regulated activity, with specific seasons and licenses required, ensuring a sustainable and ethical approach. The experience of quietly navigating the waters, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, is both tense and exhilarating. The hunt not only tests patience and precision but also offers a glimpse into the primitive, unchanged world of these ancient reptiles.

Hog Hunting: Hog hunting is popular due to the significant wild hog population in Florida. These hunts can take place in various environments, from dense forests to open fields, and can be conducted using different methods, including buggy, dogs, or spot-and-stalk techniques. Wild hogs are known for their resilience and unpredictability, making the hunt challenging yet rewarding. It's also a way to contribute to controlling the invasive hog population, which can be destructive to local ecosystems and agriculture.

Bowfishing: Bowfishing in Charlotte County leverages the area's rich freshwater bodies and coastal regions. It combines archery and fishing in freshwater trips or saltwater trips. Typically conducted from a flat-bottom boat equipped with special lights for night fishing, bowfishing requires precision, quick reflexes, and patience. It offers a satisfying and environmentally beneficial outdoor activity, often targeting overpopulated or invasive fish species. Bowfishing gear is supplied.

Overall, Arcadia, Florida, provides a diverse set of hunting and fishing experiences, set against the backdrop of the state's beautiful natural landscapes. Whether you're silently stalking gators in the moonlight, tracking hogs through the underbrush, or silently gliding through the waters bowfishing, each activity offers a unique way to connect with nature, challenge your skills, and enjoy the great outdoors.

Hunt method.

We hunt gators and hogs year round!! We are happy to customize any hunt for your expectations. That being said we have hunted hundreds of gators and by far the most fun is catching gators on rod and reel! The fight is a blast.

We have the ability to hunt our private property year round. We use side by sides and swamp buggys to move through the property as we spot and stalk. If you are hunting with us on a state land hunt (available Aug 15 to Nov 1 ), we use airboats and bay boats to cover country and make it happen.

Group Hunts

Bring the family, bring the office, bring your bride, We are happy to make this a hunt of a lifetime for everyone.

NONE! Bring the kids, We love helping introduce kids to the outdoors!

Meat Processing

Skinning and processing gators averages $30 per foot. Tanning the hide into leather is about $40 per foot.

We transport to a couple amazing taxidermist making it easy on you. They can do everything you can think of and prices range accordingly. To give you a rough idea head mounts are around $450 and Full body mounts are around $250 per ft. Pricing will vary depending on the size of the gator

We hunt different properties depending on the time of year and the hunt you book. We have the option to hunt year round on private property near Okeechobee and Arcadia which is just south of Orlando. If you book a state land gator hunt those are about 20 min north of Orlando. Hunt times are flexible allowing you to drive at a comfortable time.

We have everything you need but you are welcome to bring your own pistol, rifle, bows, etc.. If bow hunting you will need to bring your own.

We hunt all different times of day and can set the time of your hunt to make it easy for you. Hunts average 3 to 4hrs.

This is a super fun hunt with no worries about camo, but its cool if you wear it any way. Nothing special is needed, wear what you are comfortable in given the weather. Regular shoes are fine. We suggest hats and sunglasses.

Florida on map, about hunting in florida.

The tropical and subtropical climate of the Sunshine State makes Florida a challenging and interesting place to hunt. White-tailed deer and wild hogs are the most commonly hunted species, but Florida also offers a number of unique hunting opportunities, including alligators, Burmese pythons, and Osceola turkeys. There are plenty of whitetails throughout the state, and more than 100,000 deer are taken by hunters each season, making whitetails the most widely hunted species. Second in popularity are wild pigs. On private property with landowner permission, wild pigs may be trapped and hunted year-round with no bag limit and no hunting license required. Hogs may also be taken during most hunting seasons on public land, but a permit is required and there are additional restrictions. One of the most sought-after game species in Florida is the Osceola turkey. This unique bird lives on the Florida peninsula and nowhere else in the world, making it extremely popular with out-of-state hunters. It's similar to the eastern subspecies (found in the Panhandle) but tends to be a bit smaller and typically a darker shade with less white barring on the flight feathers of its wings. Black bear populations have grown significantly in recent years and a limited season was held in 2015. While the state has proposed plans to hold additional hunting seasons, these have not yet been implemented. Florida’s alligator harvest has been internationally recognized as a model program for the sustainable use of a natural resource. Each year, alligator management units are established with appropriate harvest quotas; up to two alligators can be taken per permit. CITES permits and an alligator trapping license are required. The Burmese python is a large nonvenomous constrictor that is an invasive species in Florida. Burmese pythons are found primarily in and around the Everglades ecosystem in south Florida where the snake represents a threat to native wildlife. Pythons can be killed on private lands at any time with landowner permission and no permit required, and they may also be taken at any time throughout the year from Wildlife Management Areas, Public Small Game Hunting Areas, and Wildlife and Environmental Areas where pythons are known to exist. Ducks, geese, and upland birds round out Florida’s excellent hunting opportunities, and of course many hunting trips can be combined with Florida’s famous fishing. Florida has 1.3 million alligators and it's now mating season. Here's what you should know

gator hunting trips florida

Alligators.

Love 'em or hate 'em, they are part of life when it comes to living in Florida.

They can be found in all 67 of Florida's counties. The safest practice to follow when it comes to alligators is to give them plenty of space. That's a little more difficult when they make themselves at home, literally, in our homes and yards.

There have been stories about alligators taking a stroll through a Bonita Springs neighborhood, enjoying time on a golf course, hanging out on our porches , taking a dip in our pools and even popping in to see what's happening in one woman's kitchen.

Right now, it's alligator mating season so they may be even more visible than usual. Here's what you should know, including safety tips for you and your pets.

One important point about alligators: Never feed them.

Map: Where are alligators in Florida?

Alligators are one of two crocodilians native to Florida; the other being the American crocodile, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The University of Florida said the spectacled caiman also can be found in some parts of South Florida, "presumably from people releasing pets into the wild."

There are about 1.3 million alligators in Florida. They can be found in all 67 counties in Florida and are most active when temperatures are between 82 and 92 degrees.

Their range extends as far north as North Carolina and west into Texas and southeast Oklahoma.

Alligators can be found anywhere there is water, including lakes, ponds, rivers, marshes, swamps, and even man-made canals, according to the University of Florida.

Alligator mating season starts in April

Courtship between alligators begins in early April. Yes, love is in the air right now, and you might spot alligators on the move in their search for a mate.

Alligators are highly aggressive during this time, according to WorldClassWildlifeRemoval.com.

Mating happens in May or June, followed by the females building a nest and laying 32 to 46 eggs in late June or early July. Eggs generally hatch in late August or early September.

How often do alligators attack people in Florida?

Over the last 10 years, Florida has averaged eight unprovoked bites per year that are serious enough torequire professional medical treatment, according to the FWC.

"The likelihood of a Florida resident being seriously injured during an unprovoked alligator incident in Florida is roughly only one in 3.1 million.

"From 1948 to 2022, 453 unprovoked bite incidents have occurred in Florida; 26 of these bites resulted inhuman fatalities."

Alligator bites can result in serious infection. Victims should seek immediate medical attention ifbitten.

Alligator attack killed woman walking dog behind her home

In February 2023, a horrific attack involving an alligator happened in St. Lucie County on Florida's east coast.

An 85-year-old woman was walking her dog near a small lake behind the homes in the Spanish Lakes Fairways community near Fort Pierce.

An approximately 10-foot alligator came out of the water after the dog.

She was knocked over and the alligator pulled her into the water by her foot. She was pulled into deeper water and died as a result of the incident. The alligator was caught and euthanized.

It was witnessed by a neighbor who called 911 and tried to help.

What do alligators eat?

Alligators primarily hunt at dusk or during the night, waiting motionless for prey to come close.

Their prey selection seems to be determined primarily by size, UF said.

"An alligator's diet depends on what is available to it, which means it will eat just about anything including fish, frogs, birds, turtles, insects, snakes, small mammals, other alligators, white-tailed deer, wild hogs, and sometimes people's pets.

"Once the prey is caught, it is typically swallowed whole."

Alligators vs crocodiles: How do you tell the difference?

Alligators have a broad, rounded snout with no lower teeth visible when their jaw is closed. Adult alligators are primarily dark gray in color with a lighter color underside.

The American crocodile has a narrow snout, and the fourth tooth of the lower jaw protrudes when closed. American crocodiles are a brownish gray color, and are generally paler colored than alligators.

Safety tips: How to stay safe around alligators

Remember, alligators may always be present near any body of water in Florida, especially fresh or brackish water. Pay attention to your surroundings whenever you are near any body of water.

FWC offered this tips to stay safe:

  • Closely supervise children when they are playing in or around water.
  • Never swim outside of posted swimming areas.
  • Don't wade in waters where large alligators are known or likely to occur.
  • Swim only during daylight hours. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn.
  • Do not allow pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near waters that may contain alligators or in designated swimming areas with humans. Dogs are more susceptible to being bitten than humans because dogs resemble the natural prey of alligators. The sound of dogs barking and playing may draw an alligator to the area.
  • Never feed or entice alligators — it is dangerous and illegal. When fed, alligators overcome their natural wariness and associate people with food.
  • Inform others that feeding alligators is illegal and creates problems for others who want to recreate in or near the water.
  • Dispose of fish scraps in garbage cans at boat ramps and fish camps — do not throw them in the water.
  • Observe and photograph alligators only from a safe distance.
  • Leave alligators alone. State law prohibits killing, harassing or possessing alligators except under permit.
  • Never remove an alligator from its natural habitat or accept one as a pet. It is illegal and dangerous to do so. Handling even small alligators can result in injury.

What can you do if an alligator bites you?

If an alligator bites you, the best thing to do is fight back, making as much noise and resisting as much as possible, the FWC said.

"Hitting or kicking the alligator or poking it in its eyes may cause it to release its grip. Whenalligators seize prey they cannot easily overpower, they will often let go and retreat."

Concerned about an alligator? Call alligator hotline

The FWC said residents concerned about an alligator should calls its toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).

Generally, an alligator is deemed a nuisance if it is at least 4 feet long and the caller believes it poses a threat to people, pets or property.

Smaller alligators can be deemed a nuisance if they are seen in swimming pools, garages, etc.

Once the hotline is contacted, the FWC will dispatch a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to resolve the situation.

Are alligators endangered?

The American alligator is federally protected by the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species because of their similarity of appearance to the American crocodile, according to the FWC.

The American crocodile is a threatened species.

Alligator myths

The University of Florida answered some common myths about alligators:

  • This is a common misconception. First, it is rare for an alligator to pursue a human because humans are too large to be suitable prey. However, if an alligator does make an aggressive charge, run fast and straight away from the alligator. They usually do not run very far. But remember they are most likely to charge at you if you are near their nest.
  • Alligators actually have very good eyesight. They are especially adapted to see and sense movement of potential prey animals. The position of their eyes almost on the side gives them a wide sight range. The only place they cannot see is right behind them.
  • Alligators have sharp claws and powerful tails to help them push their bodies up. Young alligators are agile climbers and adults have been known to climb fences to get to water or escape captivity. Low fences, therefore, may not be sufficient protection for pets in areas where alligators are present. Fences should be more than 4.5 feet tall if you are attempting to keep alligators out of your yard.
  • This is entirely untrue. Alligators make terrible pets. Although baby alligators may seem like a cool pet, it is illegal to possess or take an alligator without the proper licenses and permits from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Alligators are purely instinctual hunters and do not show affection.
