The Amagarh Leopard Reserve or Amagarh Safari Park is India’s second Leopard Reserve located near Galta Ji (An Hindu pilgrimage spot) in Jaipur city of Rajasthan state, India. It is surrounded by the oldest mountain range in India the Aravalli Range, Amagarh became a leopard reserve in 2020. The reserve is spread over an area of an area of1,524 hectares, with immense flora and fauna present in the park.

The Amagarh Leopard Conservation Reserve presently has a healthy population of 16 – 20 Leopards, other than leopards there are other carnivorous & herbivorous species you can spot.

Such as Indian civets, jungle cats, striped hyenas, desert cats, desert foxes, jackals, porcupines, jungle rats, monitor lizards, mongooses, spotted deer (chital), Blue Bull (Nilgai) Sambar deer,  and a variety of snakes.

Safari in Amagarh came into operation for visitors on 22nd May 2022, after the inauguration of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. Amagarh safari park is the best place to sight a leopard with a good and healthy population of leopards.

Jaipur, famously known as the Pink City, has now become an unexpected haven for wildlife enthusiasts, thanks to the emergence of new wildlife hotspots like the Amagarh Leopard Safari. This exciting addition to Jaipur's wildlife scene offers visitors the opportunity to witness the majestic leopards in their natural habitat, adding a thrilling dimension to the city's attractions.

Inauguration and Shift Timings

The Amagarh Leopard Safari was inaugurated on May 23rd, 2022, marking a significant milestone in Jaipur's wildlife conservation efforts. The safari operates in two shifts to accommodate visitors. The morning safari runs from 5:30 am to 8 am, allowing guests to witness the vibrant wildlife during the early hours of the day. Similarly, the evening safari operates from 4:45 pm to 7:15 pm, offering a chance to experience the wildlife as the sun sets over the horizon.

Expanding Leopard Habitat

The forests of Jhalana, spanning over 1,978 hectares, were initially home to Jaipur's leopard population. However, with the increasing density of leopards, the need for additional habitat became apparent. Subsequently, the Amagarh and Lalberi forest blocks emerged as new habitats for sub-adult leopards, providing them with ample space to thrive and roam freely.

Leopard Conservation Efforts

Jaipur has witnessed remarkable growth in its leopard population over the past few years, with 35 leopard cubs born between January 2019 and August 2021 alone. Such encouraging numbers have led environmentalists to advocate for Jaipur to be declared the "leopard capital of the world," further highlighting the city's commitment to wildlife conservation.

On May 22, 2022, on World Biodiversity Day, the Amagarh Leopard Reserve opened in the Pink City of India - Jaipur, Rajasthan. With this establishment, Jaipur becomes home to two Leopard Safari. The combination of this newly announced Amagarh Leopard Reserve and the Jhalana Leopard Reserve has made Jaipur the very first city in World to have two leopard reserves.

Jhalana Leopard Safari of Jaipur

In 2017, Jhalana became the first place in India where visitors can enjoy a jungle safari to see a leopard in its natural habitat. Spread over

nearly 25 square km, the Jahalana Safari Park lies in the heart of the Aravalli Hills. This park is situated in the Malviya Industrial Area in the city of Jaipur.

The Jhalana Safari Park is home to a wide variety of animals and plants, including the elusive leopard. There are approximately 30 to 35 leopards and five cubs in this reserve. Sighting hunts are common in this safari park. In the heart of the reserve, there is a royal hunting lodge, the three-story Shikaar Audhi. It's also a great spot to watch the sunrise and sunset. Many from nearby cities come to visit for a one-day trip.

Jhalana Leopard Reserve's Flora and Fauna

Due to its deciduous nature, Jhalana's forest remains largely arid for the majority of the year. During the dry season, most of the leaves turn brown and fall off the trees. The park is dominated by juliflora and khejri. Flowers like Dhak, Dhonk, Kumta, and Salar are also common in this region.

Leopards aren't the only animals in this park. Desert foxes, jackals, Blue Bull (Nilgai), Hyena, monitor lizards, mongooses, spotted deer, and jungle cats are also available in this park. Leopards can even be seen during the daytime as they have become habituated to the presence of jeeps and humans.

As a birdwatcher's paradise, Jhalana National Park is a must-visit place for photographers and bird enthusiasts. The park is home to a variety of bird species, including the Dusky Eagle, Spotted Owlet, Indian Pitta, and Owl.

Best Time to visit The Jhalana Leopard Reserve of Jaipur

Because of its exotic beauty and commitment to conservation tourists visit this place all year round. The Jhalana Leopard Reserve is open throughout the year. From November through April, the weather is pleasant, and the months of March through May are ideal for viewing the Jhalana Leopard in its natural habitat.

In the morning and the evening, safaris are available. You can hire a six-passenger jeep. For Photographers, a half-day safari can also be arranged. One needs to pay permit charges, the entrance fee, guide fee vehicle fee and additional fees for the professional guide and drive facility. An online booking facility is available, these bookings are non-transferable and the booking cannot be cancelled. Id proof submitted at the time of booking is the same passenger is asked for proof at the park.

Reaching Jhalana, Jaipur Leopard Reserve

Jhalana Leopard Reserve can be accessed by rail, road, or air.

Jhalana Leopard Reserve is around 6 km from Jaipur International Airport.

The Jhalana Leopard Reserve is a distance of 12 km from the Jaipur Junction Railway. The Jhalana Leopard Reserve contains highways that connect to important towns like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kota, Udaipur etc.

Amagarh Leopard Reserve of Jaipur

The Amagarh Leopard Reserve covers an area of 16 square kilometres in east Jaipur and is located in the Aravalli mountain range. The reserve is currently home to around 15 to 20 leopards, along with many other wild animals, birds and plant species. Besides all these attractions, tourists can also enjoy the sight of Amagarh fort, Amabamata temple, Galta temple, and Raghunath fort, which are also part of the park.

Amagarh Leopard Reserve's Flora and Fauna

The Amagarh forest region is classified as a tropical mixed or monsoon forest type. The common plants which grow in the park include Dhonk, Goya Khair, Kumtha, Salar, Totalis, etc. They are mainly spotted on the steep slopes of the Khejri hill in the plain, sandy areas of the park. Although the Amagarh Reserve is mainly popular for its leopards, there are also a lot of other carnivorous as well as herbivorous animals dwelling in the shelters of the reserve. The list includes Asian deer, hyenas, jackals, wild cats, foxes, civet cats, monkeys, rabbits, sambhar, nilgai, etc. The Amagarh Leopard Reserve Park has around 250 different bird species. Tourists will be able to spot bulbuls, babblers, doves, mynas, peacocks, parakeets, partridges, robins, shikra, woodpeckers, and other birds. Besides these, migratory birds such as the Eurasian cuckoos, golden orioles, northern goshawks, Orient scops owls, Pallid scops owls, pittas, pied cuckoos, and paradise flycatchers can be seen occasionally in this forest reserve.

Best Time to visit The Amagarh Leopard Reserve of Jaipur

Leopard sightings are common throughout the year in both Jaipur's reserve parks, Jhalana and Amagarh. However, the months of November to April are considered to be the best for visiting these leopard reserve parks. The winter months, from November to February, are ideal for birdwatchers and photographers due to the pleasantly cool weather.

Amagarh Safari of Jaipur

Safari drives are available in two main shifts: the morning shift and the evening shift. The morning shift is from 5.30 a.m. to 8 a.m. and the evening shift is from 4.45 p.m. to 7.15 p.m. Two major and one minor safari track have been created within the forest area to provide the best leopard safari experience in Amagarh Park. Around ten safari jeeps with a capacity of 120 passengers will be available daily. Tourists will enter and exit the park through a gate near Galata's Vipassana core zone.

Reaching Amagarh, Jaipur Leopard Reserve

The Amagarh Leopard Reserve can be reached by car, taxi, or bus from Jaipur (25 to 30 min from city). You can also take a train to Amagarh station. You can also use airports Jaipur airport (18 Km), which have direct flights to all major Indian cities.

Jaipur: The city is gaining popularity as a major wildlife destination. Already known for leopard safari in Jhalana, elephant safari in Amer and lion safari at Nahargarh Biological Park, Jaipur has added a new wildlife hotspot – Amagarh Leopard Safari. The online booking for the Amagarh leopard safari has already begun, according to a forest department official and the safari will begin on May 23.

Amagarh wildlife sanctuary features more than 20 leopards that the tourist will be able to see in their natural habitat. On International Biological Biodiversity Day, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot laid the foundation stone of Amagarh Safari virtually. During this, Chief Secretary Usha Sharma, Forest Minister Hemaram Chaudhary and top officials of the Forest Department were present.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that Rajasthan has gained recognition as a major wildlife destination in the world. Now, the state features three Leopard Safari destinations, two of which are in Jaipur alone.

The opening of Leopard Safari in Jaipur will have a positive impact not only on the wildlife but also on the tourism sector.

Amagarh Leopard Safari timing

According to forest department officials, after the inauguration, safari will be started for the tourists. Online booking has already begun. Initially, tourists will be taken on a leopard safari in two shifts in Amagarh Leopard Reserve. The timing will be from 5.30 am to 8 am and from 4.45 pm to 7.15 pm.

The entry into the reserve for tourists will be from a gate near the Vipassana center of Galta. The Forest Department has made three routes in the Amagarh Leopard Safari in a forest area covering 6.36 sq km. It has two bigger routes and one minor route. After the launch of this safari, Jaipur will be the first city in the country to have four safaris in the coming few months. Elephant safari is going on now. Tiger safari will also start soon.

Forest department officials said that there are a large number of leopards in the Amagarh hills and adjoining forest area around Galta. The number of leopards has also increased in Jhalana. The new leopards often stray towards the Amagarh forest area to make their territory. In such a situation, wildlife can be kept safe by developing the forest area.

The Amagarh Leopard Reserve is spread over an area of ​​16.36 square kilometers in the hills of Galta on Agra Road. A 12 km long safari track has been prepared by the Forest Department in Leopard Reserve. At the same time, seven water points have been built for wildlife where tourists will be able to spot leopards from May 23.

You can now take a leopard safari just 30 mins from Jaipur

Safari enthusiasts, there’s a new destination to add to your Jaipur must-see list. Set in the Aravallis, about 30 minutes from the city and from the airport, lies Amagarh Leopard Reserve. Sprawling across 1,524 hectares, the reserve is home to 16 leopards and 250 species of birds. A new safari experience launched this Monday by the Rajasthan state government will take you around for a chance to spot a wild cat or two.

How to visit Amagarh Leopard Reserve

The safaris are operated twice daily, from 5.30am to 8am and 4.45pm to 7.15pm, and will be available throughout the year. About 10 safari vehicles will be at hand, with a capacity of 120 people per day, as per reports.

Besides the leopard, keep your eyes peeled for hyenas, jackals, wild cats, foxes, civets, cats, nilgai, sambar and birds including peacocks, parakeets and woodpeckers. Amagarh is also home to an 18th-century fort built by Maharaja Jawai Singh II.

This is Rajasthan’s third leopard safari after Jhalana and Jawai. The state has seen a recent spike in its leopard population: between January 2019 and August 2021, 35 leopard cubs were born. Currently, Jhalana, which spreads over 1,978 hectares, has 38 leopards and the space constraint is making sub-adult leopards move towards Amagarh and Lalberi forests.

The new reserve is in line with Project Leopard, an initiative launched by the state’s forest department in 2018, to protect the big cat that was declared endangered under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Pink City Jaipur has surprisingly emerged as a major wildlife haven over the last few years. After a lion safari at Nahargarh Biological Park and a leopard safari at Jhalana, the city has got a new wildlife hotspot in Amagarh Leopard Safari.

Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot inaugurated the Amagarh Leopard Reserve on World Biodiversity Day. Safaris at the reserve started on Monday, May 23rd. Gehlot said that Rajasthan has gained immense popularity as a sought-after wildlife destination. With the opening of the Amagarh Leopard Safari, Rajasthan has got its third leopard safari after Jhalana and Jawai.

Online booking for the Amagarh Leopard Safari has begun. There will be two shifts. The morning safari will be conducted from 5:30 am to 8 am, while the timings for the evening safari will be from 4:45 pm to 7:15 pm.

The forests of Jhalana are spread over 1,978 hectares, which wasn’t enough to house the dense population of leopards in the city. Sub-adult leopards have been moving towards the Amagarh and Lalberi forest blocks.

Jaipur has seen impressive growth in its leopard count over the last three years. Between January 2019 and August 2021, 35 leopard cubs were born. Environmentalists in the state are of the view that Jaipur should be declared the leopard capital of the world.

Apart from leopards, other commonly spotted animals at Amagarh Leopard Reserve include hyenas, jackals, wild cats, foxes, civet cats, nilgai, sambhar, and rabbits, to name a few. Visitors can also explore the many forts and temples that dot the Amagarh forest block. Popular spots include the Galta Temple, Amagarh Fort, Raghunath Fort, and Ambamata Temple.

The new leopard reserve is a result of the sincere efforts made by the state’s forest department under Project Leopard. Launched in 2017, the project aims to conserve leopards by improving their prey base, mitigating human-animal conflict, and putting control on poaching.

The Indian Leopard ( Panthera pardus fusca ) was recognised as an endangered animal under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The big cat is also listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The Indian Leopard is one of the five big cats found in India. The other four are Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, Snow Leopard, and Clouded Leopard.

The Jhalana Leopard Safari or Jhalana Leopard Safari Park is India’s 1st Leopard Reserve located in Jaipur city of Rajasthan state, India. Flora In Jhalana Leopard Reserve – narrow valleys of the Aravallis and sharp cliffs of hills dominate the landscape of Jhalana Leopard Reserve. The captivating natural surroundings of the forest of Jhalana and the tranquility here are extremely relaxing and a delight for the mind. The presence of such great wildlife in the urban region makes this land a different and unique site for nature enthusiasts. Jhalana is a dry deciduous forest. The forest remains dry most of the time of the year as trees shed their leaves in the dry season and lush emeralds during the monsoons. The Jhalana forest is dominated by plants like juliflora (Prosopis juliflora) and khejri (Prosopis cineraria). The rapidly growing juliflora was initially planted to provide firewood for local villagers. However, trees do not support the growth of other grasslands and trees. The slanting valleys have more Local flora variety such as dhak (Butea monosperma), salar (Boswellia serrata), dhonk (Anogeissus pendula), and kumta (Acacia senegal).

Fauna In Jhalana Leopard Reserve – Obviously, the majestic Leopard is the prime and most covered mammal of this Jhalana Leopard Reserve, which is also the top predator of the region and who comes first in the food chain of the Jhalana forest reserve. Although the Leopard is known to be a nocturnal, solitary, shy, and rare-sighted predator with a master of stealth hunting skills, Leopards of the Jhalana National Park are diurnal in nature like tigers in Ranthambore and Sariska , due to which they are easily visible in the daytime making it one of the most visited reserve forests by Leopard lovers.

The Jhalana Leopard Reserve (The 1st Leopard reserve in India) is open for the safari tours for the visitors for all 12 months even in the monsoon season from 1st January to 31st December every year, according to the entry timings of that particular season.  In Monsoon season most of the protected reserves in the country are closed, but here’s something to compensate for that. 

Though one can enjoy the Jhalana Leopard Safari and savor the view of the majestic Leopard anytime, from November to April is considered the best time to visit Jhalana reserve as the weather is delightful at this point of time and nature is in its complete blossom around this time enhancing the beauty of the forest.

How to Reach Jhalana Leopard Reserve:

By Air: The Jaipur International airport is just 6 km away from Jhalana leopard reserve, which is approximately 15 minutes drive from the airport to Leopard Reserve. There are plenty of domestic and international flights connecting the pink city Jaipur to various cities in Indian and abroad. You can get a taxi, cab, or Bus at Jaipur airport to reach Jhalana Safari Park.

By Rail: The Jaipur Junction Railway station is the nearest rail station to the Jhalana Leopard Reserve. Which is around 11.7 km away from the forest. The station is a famous tourist station and is connected through direct trains from the major cities of India like Udaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, etc. For covering the distance from the station to Jhalana, you can hire a taxi or catch the local bus.

By Road: There is a direct road passing nearby the Jhalana forest reserve connecting it with cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Kota, etc which is further connected with the major cities of India. Jaipur with its historical heritage is now developing as a wildlife tourist spot as well. After Jhalana and Nahargarh Safari, now Amagarh reserve is going to be the new destination for Leopard safari.

After a noticeable increase in tourist footfall at Jhalana – the first leopard safari in Jaipur, the Rajasthan government is all set to start the leopard safari at Amagarh reserve, another wildlife destination of the city.

Stretching over an area of 16 km, the reserve is situated on the hills of Galta near Agra Road. At present, there are about 20 leopards living in the reserve area. A 12 km-long safari track has been prepared by the Forest Department in Leopard Reserve. At the same time, 7 water points have been made for wildlife animals including leopards where tourists will be able to spot leopards.

As per the reports, Amagarh reserve is going to begin on May 22 on the occasion of International Biological Biodiversity Day. The inauguration of Leopard Safari is proposed by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on 22 May.

According to the Forest department officials, There are a large number of leopards in the Amagarh hills and adjoining forest area around Galta. Along with this, there is a boost in the number of leopards at Jhalana as well. The new leopards are now going to shift towards Amagarh forest area to make their territory. In such a situation, the department aims to keep the wildlife safe by developing tourism here and collecting the revenue for developing the forest reserve.

The number of leopards in Jaipur has been increasing continuously for some time. About 70 leopards are living in Jhalana, Amagarh and Nahargarh safaris. Of these, more than 40 are in Jhalana Leopard Safari. With the increasing number, incidents of leopards coming into residential areas are also increasing continuously. There have been nine incidents in one year when leopards have come to urban areas.

There is also a residential area around Amagarh Safari. It will also be a challenge for the Forest Department to save the common man from Leopard. Along with Leopard, various species of birds including Nilgai, Fox, Monkey, Peacock, Wild Rabbit also reside in Amagarh Safari.
