8 Scandinavian Cruises for Any Time Frame

scandinavia river cruise

Towering fjords, majestic waterfalls, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Northern Lights dancing above the water at night: It's no wonder why Scandinavia is a popular cruise destination.

There are a number of cruises to choose from, ranging from three hours to three weeks, and while some only sail during summer, many are available throughout the year. Which one you choose will depend on the attractions that are important to you and how much you're willing to spend.

3 Hours: Norwegian Evening Cruise on the Oslo Fjord

Finding it hard to squeeze a full-length Scandinavian cruise into your visit? You could always spend an evening cruising Norway 's Oslo fjord on a traditional wooden sailing ship with Viator's three-hour sunset mini-cruise . You'll see the Akershus Fortress and Oslo Opera House, all for only $54 USD per person.

8 Hours: Icelandic Horse Riding and Whale Watching Cruise from Reykjavik

Viator also offers a 8-hour tour from Reykjavik , Iceland, which includes a whale watching and horse riding experience through Iceland's open countryside. During the cruise, you may see minke whales, humpbacks and dolphins; your onboard guide will explain more about the diverse marine life.

4 Days: Scandinavian Capitals Cruise

Explore the capital cities of Copenhagen, Denmark , and Oslo, Norway, on this four-day adventure through Scandinavia. Starting at $265 per adult, the itinerary includes two nights of hotel accommodations with an overnight ferry crossing from Copenhagen to Oslo. Authentic Scandinavia also offers capital tours from five to 18 days, which can include the capital cities of Helsinki, Stockholm, and Tallinn, along with the Russian cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow.

8 Days: Norwegian Fjords Cruise

Your ship will depart from Copenhagen, Denmark, and make its way down the Norwegian coast, stopping in the scenic cities of Stavanger, Bergen, Alesund, and Geiranger before cruising back to  Copenhagen . Experience Norway's Old-World charm, medieval and Art Noveau architecture, and natural beauty on this eight-day trip with Royal Caribbean, from $1898 USD per person.

8 Days: Scandinavia & Russia Cruise

You'll board Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas in Copenhagen, Denmark, then set sail for Stockholm, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, and Helsinki before returning to Copenhagen. Highlights of the eight-day trip (from $1249 USD) include Sweden's medieval Old Town, the 13th-century castle where Estonia's parliament meets, architectural masterpieces in St. Petersburg, and the grand Helsinki Cathedral.

13 Days: In Search of the Northern Lights Cruise

If seeing the Northern Lights is on your bucket list, this Viking Ocean Cruises winter excursion to far-north Norway is a wonderful way to do so. This smaller vessel takes you to stops within the Arctic Circle: Bodø, Tromsø, Alta, Narvik and Bergen. Highlights include snowy landscapes, sled dog rides, stunning cathedrals, and of course the mesmerizing Northern Lights. This tour starts in London and ends in Bergen, Norway. Prices begin at $4,999 USD.

19 Days: Jewels of the Baltic & Viking Sagas

This 19-day cruise by Holland America starts in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with stops in Berlin, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, multiple ports in Norway, and ends in Copenhagen, Denmark. Starting at $3,119 USD, the cruise showcases pristine fjords, Viking history, and an interesting lesson in the region's royalty.

20 Days: Norwegian Fjords & Baltic Beauty

If you have the time, this 20-day Windstar Cruise is the trip of a lifetime. You'll depart from Edinburgh, Scotland, and pass through Bergen, Oslo, Copenhagen, Tallinn, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, and Stockholm, passing through fjords, evergreen forests, waterfalls, glaciers, and more. Highlights of this weeks-long adventure include kayaking through Alesund Archipelago, an overnight stay in St. Petersburg, and Klaipeda’s Witches Hill. Scandinavia Cruise Highlights

Art and design.

Minimalist Scandinavian design has swept the world, influencing cafes, shops, and our homes for decades. While you’re traveling through beautiful cities like Oslo and Copenhagen, you’ll quickly see the contrast between early Medieval opulence and the modernist, sleek style that dominates today. Stop in Oslo’s National Museum or the Designmuseum in Copenhagen, which both explore the origins of design and architecture in the region.

European History

Discover Viking stories and preserved ships at the Vasa Maritime Museum in Stockholm and the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. Time travel to the Medieval period as you stroll the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen, and admire the statue of the Little Mermaid, based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. Castle-hop across Denmark’s capital, stopping at Amalienborg, Rosenborg Castle, or Christiansborg Palace.

Scenic Waterways

On a Scandinavian vacation, exploring the region’s incredible fjords and picturesque canals is a must. Journey through majestic landscapes and marvel at the breathtaking views on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords . In Copenhagen and Stockholm, boat down serene canals and admire the cities’ beauty from a unique vantage point.

Featured Ports

Stockholm, sweden.

Enjoy the colorful, cobblestone streets of Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, or Old Town, where you can discover centuries of Swedish history or shop in chic, modern boutiques. For an active adventure, go kayaking along the city’s canals and paddle through the city at your own pace.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The myths and lore of Copenhagen and its laidback ambiance have attracted international tourists for years. Visit the Little Mermaid statue commemorating Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale. Stroll alongside the Nyhavn Harbour, admiring the wooden ships floating in the calm waters. Relax and play at Tivoli Gardens, a perfect activity for all ages. Come see why Denmark is consistently rated one of the happiest places in the world.

Oslo, Norway

Viking history runs deep in Oslo. At the Viking Ship Museum, you can see preserved Viking ships on display. Art lovers, spend an afternoon surrounded by eccentric and classic sculptures at Vigeland Park. Museum hop from Oslo’s Natural Museum to the Edvard Munch Museum, which is home to the world-famous painting “The Scream.” During your day in port, visit the Ice Bar, made completely of ice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORDIC CRUISES

Just in case you want to learn more about cruise packages or Nordic Visitor destinations, we’ve collected the most requested queries and answered them here. If you want details on our company and booking processes, then check out our general FAQs or booking information page .

1. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE POPULAR?

Northern Europe is a popular holiday destination for so many reasons! It is a region brimming with gorgeous scenery and vibrant cultures, with the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of tours and activities.

From the fjords of Norway to the ice fields of Greenland, and from the world-class museums of Scandinavia to the Celtic heritage of Scotland, there is simply so much to uncover in Northern Europe. Best of all, you can visit the region year-round, with each season offering its own appeal.

Northern Europe is so diverse yet it is very easy to travel around, so you can see more than one country in the same trip. Flight times between destinations are short, although you can also journey by road, rail or cruise for scenic views along the way.

What’s more, the Nordic countries – that’s Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – regularly rank in the top 10 safest places in the world to visit. This is partly because they generally have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety, among other reasons.

Another plus is that most people in the Nordics speak English, which means you can easily interact with the locals if you are an English speaker yourself. In Scotland and Ireland, English is the main language.

2. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE GREAT TO VISIT ON A CRUISE?

You can easily travel around Northern Europe by cruise as there are fast, reliable and efficient links within the region. For example, Scandinavian cruise tours are very popular as they offer you the chance to visit a number of destinations across the Baltic and North Seas.

Cruising in Norway is a great option as you can visit various fjords and explore the country’s coastal landscapes. It’s also a fantastic way to discover the Arctic region, travelling aboard the reputable Hurtigruten cruise vessel.

In Greenland, cruising is the best way to reach remote corners of the country as they cannot be accessed by road. For a real adventure, spend a few days aboard a cruise to marvel at the Ilulissat Icefjord, whale watch in Sisimiut, and see mountains towering above the sea at Maniitsoq.

3. WHAT ARE THE TOP SIGHTS IN NORTHERN EUROPE?

Some of the top sights in Northern Europe include glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland, and fjords, mountains and valleys in Norway. Sweden flaunts lushly forested islands and countryside, while Scotland and Ireland are blessed with dramatic national parks and coastlines.

Find out the best places to visit in Northern Europe with our insider guides:

  • The best places to visit in Scandinavia
  • The best things to see and do in Norway
  • The best places to visit in Iceland
  • The best places to visit in Scotland
  • The best places to visit in Ireland

4. WHAT IS THE BEST NORDIC CRUISE?

There are so many Nordic cruises to choose from, so finding the best one depends on what you want to do and how much time you have.

On Scandinavian cruise tours , you can visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same trip. You could spend a week visiting the three Scandinavian countries, or stay for longer to explore the region at leisure and even incorporate other destinations into your tour.

A Baltic cruise is a great option if you want to experience a mix of Northern European cities and cultures.

Take your pick from various Baltic Sea cruise ports to stop off at. You might like to begin in Helsinki, Finland. You can then hop over to Tallinn, Estonia before sailing to Stockholm, Sweden. You may also wish to consider St Petersburg, Russia, as a port of call.

Alternatively, you could focus on exploring Norway by cruise . The west coast is 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) long, so there is plenty to discover! A Havila or Hurtigruten cruise will take you to glittering fjords and picturesque shorelines, ranging from 2 to 7 days at sea with shore excursions along the way.

How about an adventure to the far north? If you love immersing yourself in wild, remote landscapes, then opt for a Greenland cruise . Greenland is one of the last unexplored frontiers in the world, with its icy tundras, vast glaciers and Arctic wildlife.

Your voyage could whisk you to the hard-to-reach corners of Greenland. Cruise along glacier lagoons to see icebergs calving into the water, spot whales in the sea, and admire mountainous scenery from the water.

5. WHAT IS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR?

On a self-guided tour, you travel independently without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone, though, as your dedicated Nordic Visitor travel consultant has arranged everything before your arrival. They provide you with a personalised itinerary complete with tickets, bookings and recommendations.

We have a 24/7 emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

6. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO CRUISE NORWAY’S FJORDS?

Each travel season offers different reasons to visit the Norwegian fjords, so there is no “bad time” to go! However we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway at different times of the year, so that you can decide when is best for your trip.

Visit Norway’s fjords in the spring and summer (May to August) for long daylight hours and warmer weather. This is the ideal time to see the fjords surrounded with greenery and to join bird watching or kayaking excursions. You could also experience the midnight sun at the height of summer.

Alternatively, chasing the northern lights in Norway might be on your wish list. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

In which case, we recommend visiting in the autumn and winter, between September and March. You’ll need the right conditions to catch sight of them, such as solar activity, dark skies, and low light pollution. Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Norway on our blog.

Whether you see the northern lights or not, cruising the Norwegian fjords in winter is ideal if you want to avoid the crowds. The shoulder season (autumn and early spring) is also a good time to go as top attractions are quieter, with fewer visitors compared to the summer.

Whichever time of year you prefer to travel, we have reliable departure dates and there are cruise tours available year-round. You can find out more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

7. DO I NEED A VISA FOR A BALTIC CRUISE?

Whether you need a visa or not will depend on where you are travelling from. For example, you do not need a visa for a Baltic cruise if you are a citizen of the United Kingdom or USA. For all other nationalities, we recommend getting in touch with your local consulate to check.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can visit St Petersburg without a visa for up to 72 hours if you book a package cruise tour. Usually British and American citizens require a visa for Russia, but booking a Baltic cruise is one of the few exceptions.

8. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

In most cases, yes, you can view and select Nordic Visitor arrival dates online. You can always add extra days to your itinerary before or after the cruise.

9. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, you can extend all Nordic Visitor packages with extra days. Every tour can be customised by adding days to the beginning or end of your trip. You can also add extra days within your itinerary if you are travelling on a self-drive or private tour .

For cruises there are fixed departure dates as the vessel must adhere to an itinerary. But of course you can add days before or after your cruise experience. The same applies to small group tours .

10. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

We recommend you look over flights for timings and prices, but hold off purchasing until your package has been secured. Once your dedicated travel consultant has introduced themselves and sent over the confirmation email, you will have all of the information you need to pick and purchase flights.

11. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

You should always bring sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Northern Europe. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Warm socks (especially for winter travel)
  • Sunscreen (for summer trips)

An umbrella will also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to get a closer look at the fjords and local wildlife.

For a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for your trip, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland and Ireland .

Whether you want to book a cruise or ask about updating a package with extra days and nights, get in touch with our travel consultants.

Oslofjord, Norway

Scenic Waterways

This cruise has been planned to showcase picturesque waterways in Scandinavian cities. After departing the vibrant Norwegian capital of Oslo, Balmoral will navigate the majestic Oslofjord, where rugged cliffs frame serene waters adorned with picturesque islands. In Copenhagen, you can admire the city’s vibrant historic streets as you weave along the canals on a boat tour. Gothenburg is also ideal for exploring via the water, inviting exploration via its intricate network of canals that wind beneath low bridges and alongside age-old landmarks. The Swedish capital is also your gateway to the Gothenburg Archipelago, a mesmerising collection of over 20,000 islands, islets and skerries along the west coast.

Your Hand-crafted Signature Experience |  Scenic Discoveries

Smorrebrod, Danish dish

Scandinavian Way of Life

The Scandinavian lifestyle embraces nature, food, and moments of warmth and togetherness. Friluftsliv, the art of outdoor living, is deeply ingrained in Norwegian culture. In contrast, fika culture celebrates the Swedish tradition of coffee breaks, providing opportunities for socialising over a beverage and pastry. Finding a healthy balance between work and home life is highly valued, and the Danish word "hygge" perfectly captures this concept. It's generally understood to mean feeling cosy and appreciating the simple pleasures in life, spending time with loved ones, finding comfort under a blanket and having stimulating conversations. There are many culinary delights to enjoy, too, from the Danish open-faced sandwiches known as smørrebrød and the quintessential Scandinavian feast, smörgåsbord, to aquavit, a traditional spirit infused with herbs and spices, which you can sample on board Balmoral as we make our own brand.

Nordic Royalty

Scandinavian royalty embodies a rich tapestry of history and grandeur. In Norway, the Royal Palace in Oslo serves as the official residence of the Norwegian monarch. The formidable Akershus Fortress, dating back to the Medieval era, is shrouded in history and regal legacy. Copenhagen’s Amalienborg Palace stands as the majestic home of the Danish royal family, while Rosenborg Castle and Fredensborg Palace, nestled amidst picturesque gardens, offer captivating glimpses into Denmark's storied past and architectural opulence.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Grieg's troldhaugen in bergen, visit edvard grieg's home & museum at troldhaugen.

One of the leading pianists and composers of the Romantic era, Bergen's favorite son, Edvard Grieg, brought the musical traditions of his native Norway to international prominence through his work during the second half of the 19th century. Recognized as Norway's national composer, Grieg is a beloved and revered figure throughout his native country – and his home town of Bergen – to this day. You'll enjoy a guided visit to the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen, a complex in Bergen comprising Grieg's former villa (Troldhaugen), where he resided with his wife Nina from 1885 until his death in 1907; the couple's gravesite; the hut where Grieg composed his music; a museum dedicated to his life and work, completed in 1995; and the Troldsalen concert hall.

Denmark's Frederiksborg Palace

Early-entry private visit to frederiksborg palace, a danish renaissance masterpiece.

Dating to the early 1600s as a royal residence for the King of Denmark and Norway, Frederiksborg Castle – built atop three islands in a lake near Copenhagen – has been through many trials, tribulations and changes over the centuries. Following a disastrous fire in the mid-19th century, this Danish Renaissance masterpiece was reconstructed and restored according to its original plans and drawings. Today, it's the Danish Museum of National History… and you're invited to discover its grandeur on an early-opening private visit.

A wildlife filmmaker and expedition naturalists accompany you throughout your voyage in the "land of the Midnight Sun," where daylight never ends. Enjoy a camaraderie that only Arctic explorers can share... you'll be the closest you can get to the North Pole!

Tauck Exclusive – Private evening at the Vasa Museum, Stockholm

Exclusive reception and dinner at the vasa museum.

The Vasamuseet (Vasa Museum) is home to the world's only remaining intact 17th-century warship, the Vasa. When this ornate wooden warship was completed in 1628, it was the largest, most powerful battleship in the world; on her maiden voyage in 1628 she capsized and sank to the bottom of Stockholm's harbor until discovered in 1956 and raised in 1961… 333 years later! The Vasa will also be your dining companion during Tauck's exclusive, private reception and dinner at the museum.

How to see the best of northern europe on a scandinavian cruise.

Cruise ship passengers enjoy the view of Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago from the Royal Caribbean ... [+] ship ‘Serenade of the Seas.’

If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.

Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.

Popular Scandinavian Cruise Itineraries

Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Typically, they focus on the Nordic capital cities. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises.

Scandinavian Capitals : Cruise itineraries starting in the U.K. or Germany and calling in at two or even all three of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen have long been popular.

The Nyhavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark, is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers ... [+] visiting Scandinavia.

Helsinki is often included on such itineraries. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.

Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

Aurora borealis in the sky seen from a cruise ship in Arctic Norway.

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.
