“A Trip to Infinity” and the Delicate Art of the Math Documentary

A photograph of the stars in the night sky.

Several years ago, I tried to explain infinity to a class of fifth graders. In the story that I told them, I was preparing to eat a piece of cake when a friend walked in on me. Being polite, I gave her half. Before I could eat my half, another friend came by, so I split it again. This happened again and again—in the story, I have a lot of friends—and my snack kept getting smaller. How much cake would I have at the end of this? “None!” many of the fifth graders yelled. Together, we wrote a sum on the board: ½ + ¼ + . . . We agreed that, eventually, if you kept writing numbers forever, they had to add up to one. Then we talked about a different infinite sum that had been making its way around the Internet: 1-2+3-4+ . . . When I convinced them that it equalled ¼, I was pretty sure that their murmurs of “mmm” were not dreams of cake.

A new documentary, “A Trip to Infinity,” tries to serve up this feeling of wonder to Netflix’s massive audience. Populated by a diverse and engaging cast of mathematicians, physicists, and a stray philosopher or two, the film, by Jonathan Halperin and Drew Takahashi, explores the infinite, with its puzzles and paradoxes, not only as a mathematical construct but also as an idea that helps us calibrate the vastness of the universe and grasp what it would mean for something to go on forever, and ever, and ever. In images and interviews, the film contemplates whether there are physical manifestations of infinity, and whether it is possible for a mortal person to experience endlessness.

Why are we so intrigued by the infinite? Maybe it’s because of the tension between our finite lives and the seemingly unbounded range of our imagination, between the limits that we experience and the possibly infinite universe that we inhabit. Young people can think that life will last forever; older people, realizing that it will not, might look for a semblance of immortality in their legacies. Buzz Lightyear, in “Toy Story,” teaches kids that life is full of infinite possibilities; Hamlet, as he laments the finitude of life, remembers Yorick as a man of infinite jest. Perhaps to make sense of infinity, even just a little, is a way to feel some control and comfort in the face of life’s big questions.

Math documentaries always pose a challenge to filmmakers because mathematics does not exist in the realm of images but in the realm of ideas . How do you illustrate a complicated concept without resorting to gimmicks and distractions, or limiting your film to a sequence of talking heads? One of the best answers to that question is “Donald in Mathmagic Land” (1959), which was part of a series of science-education documentaries that Disney produced in the fifties and sixties. In less than thirty minutes, the film takes the viewer—and Donald Duck—from ancient Greeks to futuristic astronauts, introducing such concepts as number theory and geometry. Crucially, “Mathmagic Land” combines fun and fact without oversimplifying the math, and without speaking down to the viewer. Even if animated, “Mathmagic Land” is helpfully light on metaphor. So is “The Proof” (1997), the popular “Nova” documentary that captured the excitement of Andrew Wiles’s proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem.

“A Trip to Infinity” has moments of math magic. It includes, for example, a cartoon called “The Infinite Hotel,” based on a thought experiment by the twentieth-century German mathematician David Hilbert. In a voice-over by the mathematician Steven Strogatz , we learn that the hotel is occupied, yet it can always accommodate more guests—even an infinity of new guests. Strogatz explains the infinite sum that deprived me of my slice of cake, ½ + ¼ + ⅛ . . ., by describing a hotel manager who has a finite amount of time to prepare rooms for new arrivals. The film also succeeds when it trusts its engaging experts—an all-star cast that includes the physicists Janna Levin, Stephon Alexander, and Carlo Rovelli, and the philosopher Rebecca Goldstein —to find their own words for what infinity is, and what makes it endlessly interesting.

The film goes wrong, I think, when it attempts to dress up the mathematics in psychedelic animations, and when it asks experts on math and science to engage in armchair philosophy. As a viewer, I often felt as if I had been invited on an epistemological fishing expedition. In one awkward sequence, participants are handed a small black orb to contemplate, and then instructed, “Tell me what it makes you think about with infinity.” One can almost feel them squirming as they try to answer for the camera. A closing question—“Do you think that human creativity is infinite?”—similarly cries out for an edit. In other moments, the expert voice-overs are matched with animations of nesting circles and tiled spaces, the kinds of gimmicks that science-fiction movies have turned into clichés. The most intrusive animation is a train that twice interrupts the mathematician Moon Duchin , who is reflecting on what it would mean for a mathematical object like infinity to “exist.” The second appearance of the train blocks her entirely from view and rumbles over her thoughts, as though the underlying ideas aren’t interesting enough on their own. As a mathematician, I may be biased, but I think that they are.

Is the universe as infinite as we might imagine it to be? We may never know, but the reasons for that are fascinating in themselves. The surprise, the film points out, is that even a finite universe can seem infinite to its inhabitants. To explain, the viewer goes on a journey to a four-dimensional world. While some mathematicians claim the ability to visualize things in four dimensions, most of us can only proceed here by analogy: imagine that you are a dot that can only follow the path of a circle on a piece of paper. If you experience only one dimension, you might think that your universe goes on forever in a straight line. The same is true for a dot that can roam around the two-dimensional surface of a billiard ball: you might think that your world is infinite in every direction, even though we three-dimensional beings can look down at the paper or the billiard ball and recognize that each has limits. In one of the film’s best scenes, the astrophysicist Delilah Gates, speaking straight to the camera, contemplates whether our universe could be the three-dimensional equivalent of these finite spaces. You don’t need an animation to appreciate it. These kinds of human moments are the best reason to watch the film.

When I was a freshman in college, I had the kind of epiphany that “A Trip to Infinity” hopes to inspire. My life, at the time, felt limited; I was unhappy with university and uninspired by the chemistry labs that I had planned to spend my time on. One day, I wandered into my campus bookstore and pulled a math book off the shelf. I found it so transfixing that I sat down in the aisle, oblivious to the shoppers who had to shuffle their way around me. The simple act of counting, I read, could be a source of surprise. There are as many counting numbers as there are even numbers, for example—even though that seems to imply that two times infinity is exactly the same as infinity. There are just as many fractions as there are counting numbers—even though an infinite number of fractions can fit between two counting numbers. How could this be? I learned that there exists a bigger infinity, the one that you get when you try to count all the numbers that can be written as decimals. This last collection is so infinite as to be uncountable: no matter how you try to list these numbers, you’ll necessarily leave some—in fact, an infinity of numbers—out. That book, a bit worn around the edges and full of my marginalia, is in front of me as I type this. For me, it was a portal into a world of wonder. I am still there. ♦

Netflix documentary A Trip to Infinity is gonna BLOW your MIND, dude. Directors Jonathan Halperin and Drew Takahashi solicit experts to help them tackle the most maximal topic in the history of everything from a few different angles – and when you think about it for a sec, the only possible conclusion one can arrive at is a sublime and confounding realization that, on a cosmic scale, humans are naught but grand ignoramuses. Good luck finding meaning and purpose for your existence after watching this one!

A TRIP TO INFINITY : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: It “doesn’t behave like we’re used to.” It’s “a monster that needs to be tamed.” It “creates and destroys mathematicians.” It’s infinity! You know, the thing that goes on and on and on and never ends, like your father-in-law’s political tirades or The Snyder Cut rimshot! Here we have theoretical physicists, mathematicians, philosophers, theoretical cosmologists and the like talking about infinity – what it is, how it works, where we can find it (I bet Amazon has the best price and quickest free delivery), etc., and their concepts and explanations are illustrated by a variety of nifty animations in a variety of visual styles ranging from literal to metaphorical. And I can’t help but wonder, what does a theoretical cosmologist think about when their mind wanders? The Great British Baking Show , probably.

The doc is divided into linear chapters identified by recognizable numbers such as 1, 6, 3 and the like. I feel like it should have been more spherical in structure to fit the subject matter, but it still works pretty well. We learn that infinity can equal 0, and it can also make 1 equal 0. We learn about circles and how they keep going and going and going. We learn about how gigantic infinity is, and how tiny it is. There’s some stuff about black holes and wormholes. There’s this great bit about how an apple in a box will decay into mush and then dust and then microscopic particles and then it kind of becomes one with the universe and, if you give it enough time, significantly longer than you’ll wait for a table at IHOP on a Sunday morning, it’ll become an apple again. And when it all comes down to brass tacks, or something much much smaller than brass tacks, like quarks or something, we really don’t know shit about infinity. It pretty much exists to remind us of the uncertainty of everything. Pro tip: hit the dispensary before pressing play on this mofo.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The Black Hole , Interstellar , the last 30 minutes of 2001: A Space Odyssey , Avengers: Infinity War , Infinite starring Mark Wahlberg as a man who “discovers that his hallucinations are actually visions from past lives,” and both the Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson versions of the Cosmos TV show.

Performance Worth Watching: Mathematician Steven Strogatz gives off some serious lovable-high-school-physics-teacher vibes: He speaks in an upbeat tone that infects you with his sense of awe and wonder for the natural world.

Memorable Dialogue: The ultimate brain-pretzeling line: “In fact, there’s an infinite number of ways to make the universe finite. And there’s really only a couple ways to make it infinite.”

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: A Trip to Infinity is slickly crafted and executed. It presents complex ideas in a terrifically entertaining manner, and doesn’t dumb anything down too much. The talking heads are knowledgeable and engaging, their presence functioning as the stitching holding together a patchwork of creatively conceptualized animations. Movies about heady, weighty subjects aren’t usually so much fun.

Thematically, the core message here addresses the futility of wrestling with paradoxes. You’re better off embracing the idea that all of the human race’s advanced logic and calculations will likely never explain or comprehend the greater existential realities of the universe. And that’s why some of the scientists and thinkers in this film look so bemused as they attempt to elucidate, since it’s ultimately a futile task. One says humans are like cats: They, and we, are only capable of understanding reality within the limitations of their intelligence. It’s Aristotle’s old idea – the more you know, the more you realize how much you don’t know. This isn’t to say we’re better off being cats, because they don’t have the capacity to realize that we’re just specks on a speck in an incomprehensibly vast universe; we’re smart enough to know we don’t know, and once you accept that, it makes infinity feel a little bit lighter.

A Trip to Infinity

The new Netflix documentary about the concept of infinity is fascinating and enigmatic at the same time. Much like the notion itself, A Trip to Infinity is filled with explanatory moments to give us a brief idea about the endlessness of the universe.

The show features eminent physicists, mathematicians, and cosmologists taking a deep dive into the world of quantum mechanics. Believe it or not, the panel is so good with the process that you don’t need to have a PhD to understand infinity. It is directed by Jonathan Halperin and Drew Takahashi.

– A Trip to Infinity Review Does Not Contain any Spoilers –

The show starts with the definition of infinity itself. All the panellists have different words to explain it, but the main crux of it remains the same. At one point, you have to appreciate their honesty about everything. They don’t guarantee you the exact answers, but at the same time, their explanations lead to the adventurous ends of curiosity.

The show is divided into multiple chapters for better understanding. Each chapter explores a different theory about infinity and takes the help of humour-filled graphics to build up the concept. For instance, the looney tune representation of Proton and the speed of light will leave you in awe of the show.

A Trip to Infinity

Like every other Netflix science doc, the visual themes are highlighted in a pitch-perfect manner (something, which a show of this calibre required a lot). Even the most difficult concepts of Mathematics are smoothly portrayed through quirky montages.

The creative approach for defining theories of quantum mechanics is spot on. A layman can sit back and meditate with zero confusion, while a physicist goes over Einstein’s theory of relativity. Which in this case would be me.

I do come from a science background but never resonated with it. I blame my teachers and the thousand-page textbooks, that instilled a thick layer of monotony for even the most intriguing ideas. While watching A Trip to Infinity , I was reminded of how cool and innovative Physics can be. Back then, it was just putting values to a numerical, even before reading the complete questions.

The show has the kind of impact to reinstall a childish curiosity that many of us once had, but lost somewhere down the line. There is a special moment when one of the theoretical physicists states that she doesn’t know the answer. But sometimes it is a good thing not to know them. And that’s why she chose her profession. To find the answers.

A Trip to Infinity

Apart from the learning perspective, I need to comment on the subject in concern. It’s not like you will understand relativity right after watching the show. That’s just not how it works. Moreover, the theories are so complex, that you need crucial attention to absorb them. To be honest, I found myself replaying some chapters. And it’s no shame if you do too.

However, that’s the only con about this otherwise mesmerizing science special. The binging method and speed will rely on your capacity to consume theorems and concepts. Rest assured, you are bound to have a curiously rewarding time.

A Trip to Infinity: Final Thoughts

The show is a must-watch if you like mysteries of the universe. It will educate you about physics, and also about the extent of human understanding. Furthermore, there are several moments that will leave you speechless, and content with infinity.

A Trip to Infinity is streaming now on Netflix.

are you kidding me? this movie was absolutely horrible. next time get some real scientists and mathematicians. they experts in this show were complete morons

this review must be paid for by netlix because omg this show was bad

This show was absolutely great, but it helps to have a sense of wonder about really disturbing concepts, like infinity.

This review however, has a serious error: The “looney tunes” presentation was of a PHOTON, not a PROTON. Those are enormously different things.

The show left me with a feeling of desolation. Non-existence and loss of energy that will mark the end of all life. I’m not sure how cutting edge scientists can make these predictions, given they have no knowledge of life beyond this planet. But the idea is unsettling-it makes life meaningless.

I suck at math but I love the elegance of math... the simplicity and the complexity. I love the theories and concepts, even if my brain breaks and I never made it into the higher levels in school. So this documentary was made for me.

I remember seeing a PBS documentary when I was a kid that explored Mandelbrot sets and the infinite descent into recurring complexity. I remember sitting in 4th grade realizing numbers could go on forever... or space may have no end. Infinity is haunting and this documentary knows it. It plays with it. I might mess you up.

A Trip to Infinity Review Netflix: A Visually Appealing and Naturally Practical Documentary

“Infinity is the kind of thing that turns some people into mathematicians. And no doubt sends other people running in the other direction,” said one of the interviewees while expressing her theories in A Trip to Infinity.

I had two reactions to that sentence. One, a heavy burst of laughter, and the other, I knew that I fell in the second category. My last memory of infinity from school is that I used to put ‘?’ after Math and Economics answers. Simply because I was too tired and uninterested in solving the problem further.

So, it was the blabbering side of me that triggered a lengthy intro.

Coming back to the topic at hand, Netflix has released its latest documentary film, A Trip to Infinity. No, it’s not a Sci-Fi adventure show. However, it does feel like one. The idea behind this movie is to explore and discuss the dynamic yet rigid nature of infinity.

movie a trip to infinity

I wasn’t initially sure whether to stream it or not. However, I decided to watch the trailer, which was damn arousing. Officially, A Trip to Infinity promises to be mind-bending and cerebral.

As a cinema lover, I don’t think it would be valid to judge A Trip to Infinity (there are no reasons, either). Therefore, here is my review, where I discuss several aspects of the film.

Table of Contents

A Trip to Infinity Review Summary

A Trip to Infinity is a documentary having intelligent people who infuse a decent amount of humor while breaking down a complex concept for the general public. It’s interesting, exciting, and arousing.

A Trip to Infinity Synopsis

In this Netflix Documentary, distinguished mathematicians, particle physicists, and cosmologists from different origins muse about the implications of infinity on the universe.

movie a trip to infinity

A Trip to Infinity is directed by Jon Halperin and Drew Takahashi. The eminent interviewees include Anthony Aguirre, Moon Duchin, Stephon Alexander, Kenny Easwaran, Eugenia Cheng, Delilah Gates, Rebecca Goldstein, Brian Greene, Janna Levin, Alan Lightman, Carlo Rovelli, and Steven Strogatz.

What Works for A Trip to Infinity?

Presentation.

Documentaries are dicey. Specifically those trying to break down complex themes. A Trip to Infinity, I feel, was another tough nut to crack. Why? Because why would the general public watch a non-fiction film about a mathematical phenomenon when they can simply hop onto YouTube to do the same.

The makers or initiators of the film needed to make things intriguing and stimulating, to some extent, at least. And they have done it. A Trip to Infinity presents things so flawlessly that even a dumbhead like me, who is not too good with equations and symbols, could easily understand several technical things.

Different experts in the field talk in the simplest of terms, and the makers combine their explanations with animations and VFX to throw a stunning screenplay.

It is one strong point of A Trip to Infinity, if not the strongest. Christian Stangl is the director of Animation for the film and has dexterously brought perfection to every frame. Alongside him, there’s Dimitrios Sakkas, who’s put sweat into producing aesthetically soothing scenes to the fore.

movie a trip to infinity

Moreover, several other individuals have contributed to making the VFX and animations better. Some of them include Tom Rubalcava, Sam Niemann, Mariah Osmundson, Florian Grolig, and Grant Sanderson.

Almost all the interviewees brought their share of fun with them. And this is the best part of unscripted knowledge. You actually feel what they say and want to understand instead of just skipping things. In other words, you start enjoying the process.

I had never thought I would laugh while watching A Trip to Infinity, but Moon Duchin, Steven Strogatz, and Eugenia Cheng made me burst quite a few times.

Background Score

From exciting tones to exhilarating pitches, the background music of A Trip to Infinity is well-placed for a documentary that deciphers infinity. You would like the build-ups and want them to keep coming.

Interviewees use many exciting analogies and examples in A Trip to Infinity. From the Cat’s story to the  Infinite Hotel  and the theory of putting an  Apple in the box,  all turn out great and leave an impact. Moreover, the narrational quality of the experts was phenomenal, and why would it not be; they have been teaching and doing research for years.
