Just saying the names of East African safari destinations is bound to cause a serious case of wanderlust. Names like Serengeti and Masai Mara resonate with anyone who loves to travel, while less well-known places like Bwindi, Tarangire or Samburu offer the promise of unique, unforgettable safari experiences.

East Africa Safari Destinations

Beautiful giraffes roam the Serengeti. © Shutterstock

The Serengeti takes its name from a Maasai word meaning ‘where the land runs on forever’. It’s one of the most evocative and iconic safari destinations of all – not least because it’s the stage on which much of the drama of the Great Wildebeest Migration is played out each year.

Uganda is famed for its mountain gorilla. © Shutterstock

Uganda, an East African country known as ‘the pearl of Africa’, offers the warmest of welcomes and an incredible diversity of wildlife experiences. Uganda safaris can include savannah and mountain moments, excursions into cloud forests and discovering the source of the Nile. It’s this variety of habitats that explains Uganda’s remarkable biodiversity.

Tanzania is a wilderness paradise. © Shutterstock

Tanzania is an East African safari powerhouse, not least because in the Serengeti it features one of the greatest of all wilderness areas, and the backdrop for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Factor in Indian Ocean Islands, too, and it’s clear that Tanzania safaris can be all things to all people.

Lake Naivasha's shore is full of game. © Shutterstock

Lake Naivasha safaris take you to a literal and metaphorical oasis, offering a change of pace without any reduction in wildlife-viewing opportunities. Renowned for its spectacular birdlife, Naivasha nevertheless has a number of other feathers in its cap. While easily reached from Nairobi, it feels a million miles from the hustle of the city.

Mountain gorillas are at home in Rwanda's wild places. © Shutterstock

Rwanda has completed a remarkable transformation as a nation and has reinvented itself as a superb safari vacation destination. Rwanda safaris have traditionally focused on mountain gorilla encounters, but visits to the land of a thousand hills also offer more conventional – but no less remarkable – safari experiences, plus insights into its rich cultural heritage.

You'll never forget seeing a silverback mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. © iStock

Despite its name, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is not quite as inaccessible as might be imagined. Indeed, given that the forest contains around half of all the world’s remaining mountain gorilla, Bwindi safaris are actually perfect for travellers wanting to experience one of Africa’s most moving and engaging species up close and personal.

Mount Kilimanjaro guards Amboseli. © Shutterstock

Amboseli is known as Kenya’s land of giants, and it’s not hard to see why. Africa’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, towers over the national park, and it’s also one of the best places in East Africa to encounter elephant in numbers. No wonder people use superlatives to describe Amboseli safaris.

Lions certainly rule the Masai Mara. © Shutterstock

The place that launched a thousand clips, and millions of images. There’s no more iconic safari destination than Kenya’s Masai Mara, with its eponymous tribespeople, millions of thundering hooves, and equal parts drama, magic and romance. Kenya itineraries without Masai Mara safaris are almost unthinkable, and every moment spent there is unforgettable.

Giraffe find refuge in Kenya's conservation areas. © iStock

Kenya has as good a claim as anywhere to being the country where modern safaris began, and where they’re done best, and it still regularly features high on travel magazines ‘must-visit’ lists. Kenya has been doing what it does best for decades, and yet there’s always something new to discover on Kenya safaris.

At times, Lake Elmenteita appears glass like. © Shutterstock

Lake Elmenteita offers a more secluded safari destination than either of its neighbouring lakes (Naivasha and Nakuru), which can make it feel more exclusive. The unique volcanic landscape adds to the sense of being wonderfully removed from all that’s unimportant – and the unusual wildlife species seen on Lake Elmenteita safaris only reinforce this impression.

Ol Pejeta is a pioneering wildlife conservancy. © Shutterstock

Ol Pejeta is a pioneering wildlife conservancy in Laikipia – Kenya’s high country. With the emphasis firmly on species conservation, Ol Pejeta safaris offer not only exceptional opportunities to view species that are scarce elsewhere, but also to learn about, contribute to and even participate in ground-breaking and impactful conservation projects.

Samburu is well known for the elephant research carried out there. © Shutterstock

Samburu is the ‘other Kenya’ – this semi-arid region in the north of the country feels very different to say the Masai Mara or Amboseli. It’s much drier and the scenery is more rugged. Even the wildlife is different, with species that aren’t found elsewhere in Kenya. What’s not to enjoy about Samburu safaris?

Safaris in Volcanoes National Park enable an entry into the unique ecosystem on which the gorilla depend. © Shutterstock

Volcanoes National Park is perhaps the quintessential Rwandan safari destination, and one of only a handful of places where iconic mountain gorilla can be encountered at close quarters. Volcanoes safaris enable an entry into the unique ecosystem on which the gorilla depend – a world of soaring summits and mysterious, misty forests.

Ngorongoro Crater used to be a volcano. © iStock

Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater from one of the luxury lodges perched on its rim is one of the most remarkable safari experiences available in Tanzania. Driving across an ancient volcanic caldera, the wildlife may seem familiar, but the setting is quite unique, and this makes for wonderful photographic opportunities.

Wake up to the sounds of the bush and raucous calls of the birds. Set off after breakfast for a full day safari in Amboseli National Park. Here you will have the opportunity to capture pictures of wildlife with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background.

wildlife safari kenya ltd nairobi services

Today you can enjoy a full day safari on Ol Pejeta Conservancy including a visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary. The conservancy has over 60,000 acres of wilderness to explore and is home to an astounding array of wild animals, including elephants, rhino and lions. Or you can go on a guided bush walk, where you have the opportunity to touch, smell and hear nature as you explore the bush. There is nothing quite like the thrill of tracking an animal from it’s spoor and interpreting the tracks as to what the animal has been up to whilst you were asleep.

After dinner wrap up warm and head out again for a night drive. With the aid of a spotlight and your guide, you have the chance of spotting some of Kenya’s more unusual critters. Look for the striped polecat (also known as a Zorilla), the aardwolf or maybe even a lion or leopard hunt.

Day 5: Fly to the Masai Mara

wildlife safari kenya ltd nairobi services

After an early morning bush walk or game drive, it’s time to head to the airstrip and board a plane to the Masai Mara. On arrival, you will be met by a guide and transferred to your camp, in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy. This conservancy has open plains, riverine forests, springs, bubbling streams and rivers, with rolling hills giving spectacular views across the Mara.

Ol Kinyei belongs to a Maasai community who have recently set aside land as a sanctuary for wildlife. Head out and explore these rolling savannahs on an afternoon game drive taking some cold sundowners with you.

Kenya’s vibrant capital is also one of Africa’s largest cities. The starting point for most East African safaris

Kenya’s vibrant capital is also one of Africa’s largest cities. The starting point for most East African safaris, there’s plenty to see and do here, from admiring handsome colonial architecture to visiting the playful young elephants at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

At an altitude of 1,795m above sea level, Nairobi boasts a very pleasant climate all year round. Once a depot on the Mombasa/Uganda railway, the city has grown from a sleepy settlement built around a waterhole to a thriving metropolis abuzz with traffic, markets and tourist attractions.

If you’re a fan of the movie “Out of Africa”, be sure to visit the Karen Blixen Museum, located in the actual farmhouse where she lived for almost two decades on the peaceful outskirts of the Nairobi. Not far from here is the Giraffe Centre, established by a Kenyan family of Scottish descent, to bring the rare Rothschild’s giraffe back from the brink of extinction. Today, you can watch and even hand-feed some of these graceful giants, whose numbers have made a rebound thanks to the efforts of this organisation.

Further down the road within the Nairobi National Park is Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Specialising in the care of orphaned baby elephants and rhino, this sanctuary opens for just an hour each day, providing visitors with an insight into conservation efforts and some great photo opportunities.

Should you wish to “give something back”, you can foster an elephant through the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Alternatively, spend a day volunteering with some of the country’s most disadvantaged such as the kids at the Kibera Slum School or HIV-affected families at the Ngong Hills Women’s Centre & School.

Thanks to its elevation, Nairobi enjoys mild temperatures all year round and being a busy, modern city, has no specific peak travel periods. However, it might be worthwhile timing your visit to coincide with when wildlife-viewing is at its best in Kenya’s most famous national parks.

Wildlife Safari Kenya Ltd - All You MUST Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Kenya Wildlife Safari

8 days | spot the big five and spend a night with the maasai.

Giraffes gather in field in Masai Mara

Immerse yourself in the animal kingdom on this eight-day trip. Veer off the beaten track to seek out elephants, hippos, leopards and lions against the impressive backdrop of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha. Then, staying in the world-famous Masai Mara, deepen your understanding of Kenyan culture by experiencing tribal life in Loita Hills as you’re welcomed into the homes of the Maasai warriors and their proud village community. Join this perspective-shifting journey of unforgettable moments and memorable wildlife encounters.

Trip overview

  • Spend the night in a Maasai village to learn about life from community elders, visit a widows’ community and maybe even learn to throw a spear.
  • Venture into the incredible Masai Mara National Reserve for a full-day game drive in an open-top 4WD, looking for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and more.
  • An early morning game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park might be your best chance of seeing black and white rhinoceroses in the flesh.
  • Take a cooking class in a small village and learn some Kenyan recipes, then share your creations at a camp dinner under the stars.
  • You'll be in excellent hands for the duration of your trip, travelling with a crew of three experienced locals – a leader, driver and cook.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Patinaai Osim Community Care Organisation. Donations support their livelihood programs which help indigenous Maasai women identify alternative income-generating activities to support their families.
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have drop-down windows, which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland
  • In Loita Hills you will stay in a secure bush camp with basic facilities and cold showers. There is no Wi-Fi or upgrades available but the rewards of experiencing Maasai culture should more than make up for the lack of creature comforts.
  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or beat the morning traffic on long travel days.

Jambo! Welcome to Kenya. Your trip begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive with time to spare before the meeting, consider getting to know the city on an Urban Adventure like the ‘Nairobi Experience’. This optional 4-hour tour is a great way to get a feel for Nairobi, and includes lunch at a local restaurant. After the welcome meeting, perhaps join your new travel companions for an optional group dinner.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Nairobi - City Experience Urban Adventure - USD55

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Unfortunately, petty crime has become common in Nairobi and recently arrived visitors to the capital can often make for tempting targets. Your trip leader will verse you in a few worthwhile precautions at the welcome meeting, but generally, you should get local advice on where to walk and keep valuables in a neck wallet or money belt at all times. Stay aware even when inside, as thieves and pickpockets have been known to operate indoors. There's no need to be paranoid, but appearing vigilant is a great deterrent to would-be thieves.

For more information on Urban Adventure options in Nairobi go to urbanadventures.com/destination/nairobi-tours or speak to an Intrepid booking agent.

Drive north-west past splendid views of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha and Elementaita to Lake Nakuru National Park. Situated in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park is a great location for spotting wildlife, which you will do in an early morning game drive tomorrow. For now, head to a nearby village with your leader. This is a fantastic opportunity to interact with the local folk and get a feel for everyday life here. Enjoy a cooking class and return later in the evening to share the results for dinner.

  • Camping (with facilities) (1 night)
  • Lake Nakuru - Village Walk & Cooking Class

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Your camp, outside the park, is well-situated and has flush toilets and showers. Accommodation upgrades and Wi-Fi are not available.

Wake early for a light breakfast and head into the Lake Nakuru National Park for a game drive in the overland vehicle. Lake Nakuru is home to rhinos, and there will be a good chance of spotting and photographing one of these magnificent beasts. Return to camp for lunch before driving to your camp near Lake Naivasha. One of the few freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha has floating islands of papyrus reeds and a border of flat-topped acacias. It's also home to a healthy population of hippos and a tremendous variety of birds.

  • Lake Nakuru - Overland Vehicle Game Drive

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

There will be an opportunity to access an ATM and visit a market today to stock up on items for the remainder of the trip. Your campsite tonight is basic, with showers and flush toilets. There are no upgrades available at our campsite this evening. Wi-fi is available at the bar.

Enjoy a free day to choose from a variety of optional activities available around Lake Naivasha. Perhaps venture to Hell's Gate National Park, which boasts beautiful cliffs, gorges, rock towers, volcanoes and a range of geothermal phenomena. Another great choice is to take a boat trip across Lake Naivasha – perhaps the best way to take in the atmosphere of this lush area. If you're looking for something active, why not hire a bike for the day and make some of your own discoveries, venturing beyond the cacti and olive trees.

  • Lake Naivasha - Bike hire - USD12
  • Lake Naivasha - Boat trip - KES4000
  • Lake Naivasha - Game Walk in Crater Lake Game Sanctuary (entrance fee) - USD50
  • Lake Naivasha - Hell's Gate NP (Game Drive) - USD65

The Crater Lake game walk, Hell's Gate National Park and bike hire optional activities will also incur a USD 50 transport fee per vehicle.

The Lake Naivasha crater lake game sanctuary walk will also incur a guide fee of USD 25 per guide.

The bike hire will also require an additional USD 26 fee to enter the National Park plus an additional 250 Kenyan shillings to be permitted to ride the bike within the park.

Depart Lake Naivasha, making a short stop in Narok to do a spot of food shopping. Continue to Loita Hills, home of the Maasai people, stopping for lunch on the way. You’ll be camping at Tepesua Village, which is known for championing Maasai women’s health and education. When you arrive, be welcomed by traditional Maasai warrior song and dance, then your host will explain the details of Maasai warrior training. Take a walk to the community village which was founded to alleviate the poverty of Maasai widows, who traditionally are not allowed to inherit property. The village offers support, safety and economic growth through the ‘Tepesua Widows Income Project’. Spend the evening around a campfire and learn more about their age-old culture and traditions as you share stories with Maasai warriors into the night.

  • Camping (with basic facilities) (1 night)
  • Loita Hills - Cultural talk and village visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Hot bucket showers are available in the morning. Wi-fi is not available and only minimal upgrades are on offer at tonight’s bush camp.

Today you’ll travel from Loita Hills to Masai Mara. Most of the road there is tarmacked, but the final 5 km is dusty when dry and muddy when wet. The Masai Mara is the quintessential African experience, with sparse open plains, dramatic skies and some of the world's most tremendous animals. After setting up camp, sit down to some lunch. Then it's time to jump in 4WDs and go for a game drive through the wilderness of the Mara.

  • Masai Mara - 4x4 Game Drive

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Your camp tonight does not have Wi-Fi. Room upgrades are possible, subject to availability, and should be paid for in Kenyan Shilling. Please speak to your leader for more information.

Venture into the Masai Mara National Reserve for a full day's game drive in 4WDs. You'll explore this diverse environment and most likely see a multitude of wildlife. An optional balloon ride over the Mara at sunrise is available today. If you have pre-booked this activity, you will be picked up before dawn and driven to the launch site for a safety briefing from your pilot. Then, you will glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, to get some amazing photo opportunities. Sometimes you will ascend, getting an overview of the enormity of the plains and of the early morning movements of the teeming herds. After landing, you'll be treated to a bush breakfast, then meet up with the rest of the group while on their game drive.

  • Masai Mara National Reserve - Balloon ride (from price) - USD500

The balloon ride must be booked in advance to secure a place, which you can do through an Intrepid booking agent. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this locally on the ground you are welcome to, but keep in mind that this is a popular activity and places are limited. Wildlife & Safaris in Kenya

For the diversity of habitats and concentration of game, it is difficult to beat the world-renowned reserves in Kenya.

Animals to see on a safari in Kenya

Conservancies in Kenya are now highly popular as they empower and support local communities whilst protecting the local environment.

In the Laikipia District you will find the 19,000-acre private conservancy, Ol Pejeta, which features an astounding mix of wildlife. With the largest Black Rhino Sanctuary in East Africa, it is now a successful home to this critically endangered species and you can also visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where you can spot this remarkably intelligent animal.

African Lion

Kenya's national animal, and arguably the most famous animal on the planet, the African lion is the symbol of strength and power and the epitome of any safari to wild Africa . Lions are notably the only sociable big cat, with prides formed of a few muscular males who are crowned with a thick mane, whilst most of the hunting is done by the smaller more agile females. They can be found in several Kenyan national parks, including Maasai Mara National Reserve and Nairobi National Park.

African Elephant

The African elephant is the largest land animal on Earth and is known for its impressive size, long tusks, and strong social bonds. They can be found in various national parks and reserves across Kenya, such as Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Park.

African Leopard

Leopards are known for their elusive and secretive behavior, making them harder to spot than other Big Five animals. They can be found in various Kenyan parks, such as Samburu National Reserve and Laikipia Plateau.

African Buffalo

Also known as Cape buffalos, are large, powerful herbivores with distinctive horns. They are known for their unpredictable behaviour and can be found in many of Kenya's national parks and reserves. Maasai Mara is one of Kenya's most famous wildlife conservation areas, ideal for a wildlife safari, and is home to a healthy population of African buffalo. The park's grassy plains and abundant water sources make it an ideal habitat for these animals forming a main prey base for Kenya’s Big Cats.

The black rhino is a critically endangered species, and spotting one in the wild is a rare and thrilling experience. They can be found in a few protected areas in Kenya, including Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is one of the most pioneering examples, where a vast area of 18,000 hectares has been earmarked to provide refuge for black and white rhino, sitatunga and Grevy’s zebra.

The Great Migration

The climax of any Kenya wildlife safari; the annual Great Migration is a dramatic, wild and totally enthralling marvel of nature, where predatory lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena gather and wait expectantly for more than two million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra to arrive in a stampede of activity, so they can prey on the more vulnerable, juvenile or lone animals. The climax of the event comes with the river crossing and after the first animal’s tentative entry into the waters, thousands more follow in its shadow and the inevitable chaos that ensues is breathtaking, with some animals being taken by waiting hungry crocodiles as they desperately try to make it to the other side. The sight and sound of the thundering hooves of the millions of migrating animals arriving from Grumeti River area in Tanzania through to the Masai Mara in Kenya is like no other on earth.

Nairobi, Kenya - 5 Places to See if an African Safari is on your Travel Bucket List

W ith a mix of ethnicities and nationalities worldwide, Nairobi , the capital city of Kenya, warmly embraces all her visitors and works to make you at home quickly. Yet despite having a space for everyone who visits, Nairobi still sets itself apart and offers a unique vacation to all its visitors.

If an authentic safari experience is on your bucket list, Nairobi is definitely worth considering. Here are some recommendations to make the most of your trip to Kenya.

The Nairobi Culture

Nairobi is a busy city just like any other city in the world. The streets are bustling as ever and there are tons of places to visit and see. As a Nairobian tourist, it would help to learn a few Swahili words. “ Hujambo ” for greeting or “ Habari yako ”, “ Karibu ” for “welcome”, “ asante ” means “thank you”, “ pole ” means “sorry”, and “ tafadhali ” means “please”. See the incredible thing about Nairobi, nobody expects a foreigner to be fluent in Swahili. Throw in one of the above words and continue your speech in English and that’s more than enough.

Beyond language, politeness is paramount in Nairobi. Tip your servers in the restaurants when you can. Always start all your conversations with greetings and don’t leave too many leftovers . Wasting food is looked down upon in Kenyan culture.

There is no strict dress code in Nairobi, much less for a visitor. Fridays in Nairobi are spent socializing in malls, bars, clubs, and or at restaurants for tea or coffee. If you want a never-ending nightlife, find your way to the Westlands . Indulge in some club-hopping before you retire for the night.

Things To Do In Nairobi

1. visit nairobi national park.

About an hour from the city center, you will find Nairobi National Park. Enjoy an authentic safari experience in the savannah grassland in a park teeming with lions, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, rhinos, wildebeests, and buffalo. The only animals you won’t find here are elephants. It’s an incredible sight to watch the wildlife in their natural habitat with the city’s skyline as a backdrop.

In addition to Nairobi National Park, the city has many animal sanctuaries in the region that are open to the public. Many endangered species of animals like Sokoke cats, buffalos, ostriches, flamingos , hyenas, blue wildebeest, rhinos, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, and black-backed jackal can be seen – both at the sanctuaries and on safari excursions. In addition to endangered animals, some sanctuaries house endangered plants.

2. Explore Maasai Market

Immerse yourself in Maasai culture at this incredible market that changes its location every day of the week. This is in keeping with the Maasai nomadic culture. This market is a must-visit as part of the Nairobi experience. Stroll through the market and experience vibrant colors in beadwork, woven shukas, and house ornaments all handcrafted by the Maasai people.

3. Visit Nairobi National Museum

Enjoyed even by non-museum fans, the Nairobi National Museum is an excellent showcase of Kenya’s history. Located within the city, the museum is a popular destination and easily accessible. Besides Kenya’s history, the museum also takes you through a journey of human ancestors. Explore the snake park within the museum and the beautiful botanical garden.

4. Visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage

Located right next to the Nairobi National Park, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the animal sanctuaries that will be the highlight of your trip to Nairobi. Here you will find the most adorable baby elephants. Watch as their caretakers bring them out, feed them, and play with them. Your heart will melt at the bonds between these baby elephants and their caretakers.

5. Have breakfast at the Giraffe Manor

Can you imagine having breakfast while petting and feeding giraffes? The Giraffe Manor in Nairobi is home to the critically endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Founded in 1979, this sanctuary is one of Nairobi’s greatest gems. Meet and learn the names of the welcoming giraffes and take as many pictures as possible with these lovely creatures.

Kenyan Food You Gotta Try

Kenyan cuisine is inspired by over 44 tribes in the country of Kenya. Over time, these meals have made their way through the country and have become staples in households everywhere.

Foodies will find a haven in Nairobi as it offers dishes from just about every part of the world. From delectable and spicy Mexican dishes to creamy pasta, Kenyan dishes have made a name for themselves and serve as part and parcel of a Nairobi experience.

Sample Ugali , a meal made by adding maize flour to boiling water until it hardens. It pairs well with stews and vegetables, especially collard greens Kenyans love to call Sukuma Wiki (push the week). Ask for Pilau , a delicious traditional cinnamon, ginger, and garlic. Try chapati , a Kenyan flatbread inspired by the Indian naan. Vegans will love Kenyan cuisine for dishes such as githeri (a mix of maize and bean), mokimo (pounded potatoes, maize, and greens), matoke (cooked green bananas), and Maandazi , a sweet treat made with leavened flour.

Safety Tips

As with any big city, Nairobi has its fair share of security issues. Here are some tips to keep you safe as you visit:

  • Always keep your valuables close to you. Whether it’s your handbag, backpack, or wallet, make sure it is well-kept. There are pickpockets and tourists can make for an easy target.
  • Don’t walk alone at night – for the most part, Nairobi taxis are pretty safe. When you are out at night, it is safer in a taxi or any vehicle than walking alone. For more safety, you can use ride-hailing services like Uber or Bolt to navigate your way through the city.
  • Do a bit of research about Nairobi before arrival. This will familiarize you with the city, which should make your exploration much safer.
  • Stay connected and reachable at all times. Stay online and inform your loved ones of your itinerary and whereabouts every day. Buy a local SIM card for your phone to ensure you have a reliable connection throughout your stay.

A Bucket List City

Boasting as the only city in the world with a national park within its confines, Nairobi is a mix of raw untamed wilderness and vast urban sprawl. Whether you decide to spend your days in Nairobi exploring wildlife in the national park and sanctuaries or embark on a museum blitz around the city, your stay in Nairobi is bound to be unforgettable.

This New Safari Lodge in Kenya Offers a Close-Up Look at Africa’s Last Remaining ‘Super Tusker’ Elephants

The AFAR take

The 5,700-acre Kimana Sanctuary, Kenya’s first community-owned conservancy, is home to the Masai community and some of Africa’s last remaining super tusker elephants, who move between the nearby Chyulu Hills and Amboseli National Parks.

It is also the home of Angama Amboseli , which in October 2023 opened 10 suites styled in serene natural tones offset by stark modern blacks. The suites each feature outdoor showers, private verandas, and uninterrupted views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. The sister property to Angama Mara (located in Kenya’s vast Masai Mara ecosystem, about 300 miles west), Angama Amboseli has an aesthetic that complements the environment: The round infinity pool sits above a lowered water trench from which resident elephants can drink; elephant dung is used to add texture to exterior walls; and a semicircle chartreuse sofa in the main lounge area is inspired by the leaves of the ubiquitous acacia trees.

Who’s it for?

The location

Kimana Sanctuary is widely believed to be Kenya’s first community-owned sanctuary, meaning that it is owned by 844 local landlords who together make decisions on how the land is used. Today the sanctuary is exclusively available to guests of Angama Amboseli. Travelers can fly in from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park using a local carrier such as Safarilink. I arrived at the camp from Nairobi, where I’m based, after a smooth three-hour drive down Mombasa Highway; a few miles after we turned on to the quieter C102, a giraffe crossed the road, welcoming us to a wilder side of Kenya.

As Kimana is sandwiched between several larger parks, including Amboseli National Park, Tsavo West National Park, and the Chyulu Hills the sanctuary serves as a corridor for the area’s wildlife. The establishment of Angama in 2023, as well as the lodge’s long-term partnership with Big Life Foundation (a nonprofit conservation organization that focuses on collaborative wildlife management), helped to strengthen the sanctuary’s conservation efforts. In the main area at the lodge, staff members can walk guests through a giant stylized metal map with arrows depicting how animals, including long-tusked elephants, tend to move through the region.

One luxury of Angama Amboseli is its exclusivity: You can roll out of bed in your pajamas and be one of the few people to see the sunrise view of Mount Kilimanjaro. The only vehicles permitted in the 5,700-acre sanctuary are those from the lodge. Guests can do a safari at night, when a whole different set of fauna emerges.

For travelers looking for more of a traditional game drive, the staff can take people to the nearby Amboseli National Park. The Angama team is working to create a new gate by August 1 that would cut the travel time to the park in half, to 20 to 30 minutes. The national park is also home to a large elephant herd as well as resident cats and more than 600 species of birds, giraffes, and zebras.

Angama’s people-driven ethos extends to the surrounding community. Seventy percent of the staff are hired from the area’s villages and towns.

One of the most memorable aspects of Angama Amboseli is its design. The lodge is sleek and earthy, with a thoughtful use of materials, colors, and shapes. Neutrals contrast with occasional pops of color: a giant half-circle light-green sofa whose color mimics the acacia leaves, ochre tables and chairs that resemble the clay earth, and white globe lights.

Each of the 10 tents offers private indoor-outdoor living space and outdoor showers, and outside lounge areas look right onto Mount Kilimanjaro. Rooms are stocked with homemade snacks, decanted bottles of gin and whiskey, and painting supplies for visitors to use during their stay.

The pachyderm theme is omnipresent in the design. The spacious tents, when you squint, look like modern renderings of elephants. Elephant dung adds additional texture to some exterior walls. Below the rounded pool, elephants and other wildlife can drink from a unchlorinated trench.

The art gallery features paintings by Nairobi-based artist Sophie Walbeoffe that depict elephants, flamingos, and other famed residents of Amboseli National Park, as well as wildlife photography by Sammy Njoroge, who runs the lodge’s studio, and more. Njoroge and his team allow guests to rent DSLR cameras with zoom lenses, and after you return from a game drive, they can help edit your photos. Near the entrance, the lodge has displayed replica tusks of Tolstoy, one of the beloved local super tuskers that frequented Kimana Sanctuary until he was tragically killed in 2022 by poachers. Put together, his tusks weighed nearly 250 pounds, and the right one was more than 100 inches long.

This guest suite bedroom at Angama Amboseli has a four-poster bed, stone floors, and sliding doors that lead to a private veranda.

The food and drink

The resident chefs can prepare anything from simple pastas to multicourse meals. Everything uses simple, fresh ingredients, many of which are locally sourced. I enjoyed the lavish breakfast spread with homemade granola, and at other meals I gravitated toward soups made from seasonal vegetables, and fresh bread served alongside the beautiful main dishes. If guests are celebrating a special occasion, staff can arrange a meal in the property’s art gallery, where diners can enjoy a candlelit meal among elephant-themed paintings.

Staff and service

Before opening Angama Amboseli, staff spent three months training at sister property Angama Mara in the Masai Mara. Every guest is assigned a personal butler throughout their stay who can liaise with the staff regarding food preferences, drinks, and overall itinerary.

“We believe it’s about the people first,” says Collins Randiga, general manager of Angama Amboseli. “We take care of our guests. We also make sure that our team sleeps well, has good food, and that their families are taken care of.” Every staff member is given two weeks off after working for six (this is approximately double compared to similar lodges nearby, based on three places I asked on recent safari visits). The staff quarters are built to the same standard as guest accommodations.

Angama’s people-driven ethos extends to the surrounding community. Seventy percent of the staff are hired from the area’s villages and towns. When I visited, the lodge manager, despite not hailing from the community himself, was going to pay his respects at the funeral for a family member of one of the 844 landlords that own the land. The first day of business, Angama Amboseli hosted some of the area’s elders so they could experience, enjoy, and bless the property.

Accessibility

One suite is called the Patty, named after sister property Angama Mara’s first guest to use a wheelchair, and features ramps, a lowered vanity, and grab rails in the bathroom. However, the main dining and lounge areas in the lodge have several stairs, which may be challenging for travelers with limited mobility.

Wildlife watch

Salash Johnson, our driver and guide, was the most knowledgeable guide I’ve ever had on a safari. Prior to working with Angama Amboseli, he was a ranger with the Kenya Wildlife Services for seven years. With him, I learned about the great efforts rangers take to protect the area’s wildlife, particularly the elephants with characteristically large tusks that are more vulnerable to poachers. He became visibly emotional when he drove me to Tolstoy’s final resting place and explained how much the rangers had tried to protect him. His hope now is that, with Angama leasing the land and offering jobs to community members, there may be more of an incentive to protect elephants from poaching. From $1,650/person/night

Flooding Inundates Kenya, Killing at Least 32 and Displacing Thousands

Heavy rains also pounded other nations in East Africa, including Tanzania, where at least 155 people were killed, according to the country’s prime minister.

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Here are photographs of the flooding in Kenya:
