Harry Potter at Alnwick Castle

Icon

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone filmed on location at Alnwick Castle in autumn 2000. The following year, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (the second film in the series) used Alnwick Castle for shooting.

The Outer Bailey is recognisable as the area where Harry and his fellow students learned to fly broomsticks with Madam Hooch (Zoe Wanamaker).  Harry also learned the rules of wizarding sport Quidditch in the Outer Bailey.

The courtyards and baileys of Alnwick Castle were used to film Hogwarts students and staff going about their daily activities. Harry and Ron crash-landed the Weasley family’s flying car in the Inner Bailey.

The Lion Arch was a way in and out of Hogwarts, heading towards Hagrid’s cabin and the Forbidden Forest.

The Holy Island

Lindisfarne is known as the ‘Holy Island’ because of its links to early Christianity and is a truly wonderful little island to visit.

Reaching the beautiful island is only possible when the tide retreats and as such, one of the more unique roads with Scottish Guided Tours.

Every month, at least one vehicle gets caught out with the tide after attempting to reach the island despite the clear warnings.

Lindisfarne Priory dates back to the 7th century and is close to the heart of the village.

Apparently, a bottle or two of Mead can bring you closer to God!!

Guide to the Hogwarts Express in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Hogwarts Express Train

Oh what a dream it is to be a young witch or wizard traveling between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade Station… and that dream can come very true for anyone visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort.

As this year marks the 20 th  anniversary of the beloved  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone  film, we thought it was the perfect time to reflect on Harry’s first time seeing this scarlet steam engine with our very own guide to the Hogwarts Express . This immersive ride is not only an ideal way to travel between both lands, it is also a storytelling journey where riders get to come across some familiar characters.

So grab your wand and a Chocolate Frog and I’ll meet you at Platform 9 ¾.

Just like the students of Hogwarts did each school year on September 1, you’ll be boarding the Hogwarts Express! No matter which land within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter you start in ( Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida or Hogsmeade village in Universal Islands of Adventure ), you’ll be riding along with Harry Potter and his friends to or from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Boarding from Hogsmeade Station? Get your camera ready because the vision of the train pulling into the station with the smoke billowing is absolutely goosebump inducing!

9 3/4 Platform Sign in King's Cross

I also absolutely love the queue within King’s Cross Station in Universal Studios Florida. Keep an eye out for a familiar poster advertising perfume before walking through Platform 9 ¾.

Queues in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter are truly incredible and as can’t-miss as the rides themselves. Learn more about the details in Hogwarts castle here and the special items you’ll find in Gringotts bank here .

A cabin inside the Hogwarts Express

One of the best parts about travelling on the Hogwarts Express is that there are two unique experiences each direction you ride.

When you board from King’s Cross Station in London, you’ll feel like you are a student en route to your first term at Hogwarts. With appearances from some school friends, a trolley full of treats, and some menacing Dementors, you can enjoy a smattering of immersive delights.

If you’re heading from Hogsmeade to London, it’s a whole new experience. Keep an eye out the window for familiar faces greeting you (some more friendly than others) and the infamous Malfoy Manor.

RIDE DETAILS:

  • A Park-to-Park ticket is  required  to ride
  • Under 48” (122 cm) Requires Supervising Companion
  • Universal Express Pass is available

MEET THE CONDUCTOR

Hogwarts Express Conductor

When you exit the Hogsmeade Station and enter town, you’ll get a chance to meet the Hogwarts Express conductor! Make sure to stop by for a great photo-op.

PRO-TIP:  Download the official Universal Orlando app to easily find the times the conductor will be out and about ready to meet you!

Stop by Globus Mundi in Diagon Alley for all your travel-related merchandise needs. The shop has lots of cool items themed around Hogwarts Express, including everything you need to rock your luggage out in style.

Check out our complete guide to shopping in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter here.

Next time you’re at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort, make sure to take your own journey on the Hogwarts Express.

10 Scottish Locations Harry Potter Fans Must Visit

28 Jun, 2021

People of all ages love Harry Potter. What began as a humble collection of kids’ books has become the best-selling book series of all time and has been adapted into some of the highest-grossing films of all time.

All of this success has led to quite a few Harry Potter-themed attractions around the world, too. There are the created attractions like Harry Potter World in London and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida. But we’d like to make a case for why Scotland is, by far, the best place for Harry Potter fans to visit.

In fact, there are tonnes of Scotland TV and film locations to visit, with Harry Potter being only one of many such draws for fans. Without further ado, here are 10 locations in Scotland Harry Potter fans must visit!

1. Hogwarts in the Scottish Highlands

Glencoe in Scotland - Harry Potter locations

In the Harry Potter books, Hogwarts is set in the Scottish Highlands, which is one of the main reasons why there are so many Scottish locations in the films.

If you see a beautiful vista in one of the films, with rolling hills or jagged mountains, chances are it’s in the Scottish Highlands. Loch Arkaig, Clachaig Gully, and Glencoe all served as filming locations for the Harry Potter movies.

There are extraordinary hiking trails in the Highlands, as well as scenic drives and jaw-dropping viewpoints. Keep an eye out for Hogwarts wherever you go! It’s supposed to have a secret protective barrier around it to keep it hidden from muggles, but you never know…

We have a pre-packaged Scottish Highlands tour if you’re keen on seeing this epic scenery, but we can also adapt any of our tour itineraries to include a trip to the Highlands.

2. Victoria Street in Edinburgh: The Real Diagon Alley?

The real Diagon Alley? Victoria Street in Edinburgh is a Harry Potter location in Scotland | Inspiring Travel Scotland

While York claims that its street ‘The Shambles’ was the inspiration for Harry Potter and London’s Leadenhall Market provided the exterior shots for the film, Edinburgh has a solid claim for the real Diagon Alley.

J. K. Rowling lived in Edinburgh the entire time she wrote the Harry Potter books and it’s rumoured that Edinburgh’s eccentrically beautiful Victoria Street was the true inspiration for Diagon Alley.

Victoria Street has a multicoloured mixture of storefronts selling all kinds of wares. While the street’s unique curving shape isn’t quite diagonal, it’s certainly not straight either!

There is actually a Diagon Alley plaque on Candlemaker’s Row, an alley just off Victoria Street. Whether true or not, it’s easy to see why this Edinburgh road is popular with Harry Potter fans!

3. The Glenfinnan Viaduct for the Harry Potter Train

Glenfinnan Viaduct - Hogwarts Express scenes

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a beautiful railway viaduct on the West Highland Line that any self-respecting Harry Potter fans are guaranteed to recognise.

It is the set of one the most iconic shots in all of the movies, as the Hogwarts Express in Chamber of Secrets is making its way to the school and Ron and Harry are flying overhead in Arthur Weasley’s flying Ford Anglia.

But that’s not all: the Glenfinnan Viaduct was also where the train stopped in Prisoner of Azkaban when the dementors searched for Sirius Black.

For Harry Potter fans and history fans alike, the Jacobite Express (the real name for the “Harry Potter train”) is a view worthy of a photo op.

Timing your visit to see the train crossing the viaduct is easy enough, especially when you have a local expert guiding your journey through the Highlands and beyond!

If you’re visiting with the whole family, take a look at our suggestion for the best itinerary for touring Scotland with kids to see how you could fit in a sighting of the Hogwarts Express!

4. Greyfriars Kirkyard: Visit Tom Riddle’s Grave in Edinburgh

Greyfriars Bobby statue in Edinburgh | Inspiring Travel Scotland

J. K. Rowling has been very open about how much inspiration she has taken from her adopted city (Edinburgh). Some of that inspiration has come from Greyfriars Kirkyard — a hauntingly beautiful old graveyard close to The Elephant House Café (more on that Harry Potter location later).

Authors often cite gravestones as a great resource for choosing characters’ names. Rowling claims to have found the name for her greatest villain in Greyfriars Kirkyard.

Take a visit to the graveyard and look for Tom Riddle’s grave, but be prepared for a slightly different spelling: Thomas Riddell Esquire.

There is also a gravestone with ‘William McGonagall’ on it. Perhaps this was the inspiration for Hogwarts’ great transfiguration professor?

You won’t be alone in your Harry Potter fan search here; there are frequent tour groups and Potterheads marking fairly clear paths to the most prominent names in the graveyard.

5. Give J.K. Rowling a High-Five at Edinburgh City Chambers

The Edinburgh City Chambers, on the Royal Mile, is an impressive building in its own right. But it might be especially appealing to Harry Potter fans keen to see its tribute to J. K. Rowling.

Edinburgh gives the ‘Edinburgh Award’ to outstanding residents of the city and J. K. Rowling certainly matches that description! Rowling won the award in 2008 and an impression of her hands has been immortalised in bronze in the City Chambers courtyard.

This is definitely a Scotland destination for Harry Potter fans to catch a glimpse of the hands that created your favourite fictional world! Go ahead and give her handprints a high-five to thank her for these stories.

6. The Final Harry Potter Chapter: The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh

Balmora Hotel in Edinburgh

The Balmoral Hotel is a really swanky establishment on Edinburgh’s gorgeous Princes Street, and it’s worth visiting if you want your stay in Edinburgh to be particularly extravagant!

However, it has a special attraction for Harry Potter fans. This was where J. K. Rowling stayed while she was writing The Deathly Hallows , the final book in the Harry Potter series.

Rowling apparently stayed in the hotel to get away from any day-to-day distractions while she finished her series. The room she stayed in is now called The J. K. Rowling Suite.

Don’t worry if the Balmoral is out of your budget. We have plenty of suggestions for hotels in Edinburgh and you’ll also want to get some inspiration from our recommended things to do in Edinburgh .

7. Hogwarts in Glasgow? The University of Glasgow

University of Glasgow, inspiration for Hogwarts

Whilst it was actually Alnwick Castle in the North East of England that was used for the exterior shots of Hogwarts in the first few films, pretty much everyone who sees the University of Glasgow’s main building is struck by its uncanny resemblance to Hogwarts.

Not only does it look the part from the outside, but it also has a courtyard inside that looks a lot like the spot where Harry first learned to fly his broomstick in the first film.

You can visit both Glasgow and Edinburgh as part of our Two Cities tour !

8. Hogwarts in Edinburgh? George Heriot’s School

George Heriots School in Edinburgh looks like Hogwarts | Inspiring Travel Scotland

The University of Glasgow bears a striking resemblance to Hogwarts in the films, but George Heriot’s School is actually the school that inspired J. K. Rowling for her books. It was visible from her preferred writing spot in The Elephant House café (more on that below).

George Heriot’s School is a beautiful old building with turrets that make it look a lot like a castle, and it dates back to the early 1600s. Rowling has also said that she based Hogwarts’ different houses on the house system used at George Heriots.

The school isn’t usually open to visitors, but you can certainly get a good look at it from The Elephant House café.

9. Steall Falls from the  Goblet of Fire

Whilst exploring the stunning Scottish Highlands, enjoying a short walk to Steall Falls might remind you of a particular moment in the film  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire .

There are many other locations in the Highlands to visit for Harry Potter scenery, including Loch Etive, Loch Morar, and Loch Eilt, and Rannoch Moor.

10. Birthplace of Harry Potter: The Elephant House in Edinburgh

The Elephant House - birthplace of Harry Potter

This charming little café has a pretty great claim to fame: it is, arguably, the ‘birthplace of Harry Potter’. It has even written this on its window!

There’s actually a lot of truth to this claim as The Elephant House was the café J. K. Rowling escaped to when she was writing the first Harry Potter novel.

Some writers need to get away from home to get their creative juices flowing and Rowling has said in the past that the café was a great place for her to write Harry Potter.

If you want to visit the place where the entire Harry Potter World was first built, then The Elephant House is an absolute must. Don’t miss out on the Harry Potter-themed graffiti in the toilets!

Top 7 Harry Potter Filming Locations Blog

If you've seen the Harry Potter films, you'll almost certainly have been impressed by the gorgeous scenery and stunning locations.  All 8 of the movies were shot at various sites throughout the UK, but here are our top 7 favourite filming locations in Scotland and England, where the movie-makers brought Hogwarts Castle, the Hogwarts Express and the rest of the Harry Potter world to life.

Alnwick Castle

Visitors make their way to enter Alnwick Castle through the Portcullis Gate

The filmmakers created Hogwarts Castle on-screen using some serious technical magic to blend shots taken at various historic buildings.  Our favourite has to be the magnificent 11th century medieval Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, where outdoor scenes for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone were filmed in autumn of 2000, and for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets the following year.

Man rides a broomstick at Alnwick Castle

Harry and his fellow students learned to fly broomsticks with Madam Hooch in the courtyards here, and it's also where Harry mastered the rules of Quidditch and played his first game, and memorably where Harry and Ron crash-landed the Weasley's flying car!  Hogwarts students and staff were regularly seen going about their activities in the castle grounds, or walking through the Lion Arch out of Hogwarts towards Hagrid's cabin and the Forbidden Forest.

This is one of the most iconic Harry Potter filming locations, and not only can you visit the castle but you can take broomstick flying lessons for yourself! We think it's fair to say that Alnwick is as close as it gets to the real Harry Potter Castle, but you should also check out beautiful Durham Cathedral , where Professor McGonagall's classroom was filmed in the Chapter House, and 7th Century Gloucester Cathedral, where many of the corridor shots were shot in the ornate cloisters and where Moaning Myrtle flooded the toilet.

Oxford University

This venerable University is the oldest in the English speaking world.  Its beautiful buildings were used for many of the most striking Harry Potter filming locations in England, standing in for various parts of Hogwarts Castle.

Wood panelled Christ Church Hall with tables set for dinner

Christ Church, Oxford

The Tudor hall here was the inspiration for the Hogwarts' Great Hall set, which the filmmakers created at Warner Bros studios in Leavesden, just outside London.

No actual filming took place in the Christ Church Hall itself, but the 16th century stone staircase leading to it can be recognised as the area Harry and the rest of the first-year students pass through in The Philosopher's Stone, as they're greeted by Professor McGonagall and enter the Hogwarts' Great Hall for the first time.

Looking down towards the reading desks in the Bodleian Library, Oxford

New College, Oxford

The beautiful courtyard of the New College appears in the scenes in Goblet of Fire when the students are teasing Harry with their 'Potter Stinks' badges, and its where Malfoy sat on the famous enormous oak tree and was magicked into a ferret by Mad Eye Moody!

The Bodleian Library, Oxford

The magnificent Bodleian Library provided filming locations for 3 of the Harry Potter films.  Duke Humfrey's Library was used as the Hogwarts' library, where Hermione is often seen reading.  The English Gothic Room of the Divinity School, dating from 1488 and the oldest teaching room at the University stood in for the Hogwarts Infirmary, for example in the scene where Ron recovers after being poisoned in The Half Blood Prince.

Lacock Village and Abbey

This 13th-century abbey in Wiltshire and the pretty nearby village were used extensively for Harry Potter filming locations in England.

Intricate carvings are seen in The Cloisters of Lacock Abbey

In The Philosopher's Stone, the village of Godric's Hollow and Godric's Hollow Parish Church can be recognised in Lacock, and Harry's parents cottage was filmed at the end of Church Street.

Lacock Abbey was yet another stand-in for Hogwarts, with the most recognisable location being the cloisters which were used as the halls of Hogwarts Castle.  The Abbey 's Warming Room, containing a giant cauldron, was Professor Quirrell's Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, Professor Snape's Potions Class was held in the Sacristy, and the Chapter House was where Harry found the Mirror of Erised in The Philosopher's Stone.

The new-gothic architecture of St Pancras Station

In the books and films, the Hogwarts Express sets off from Platform 9 ¾ at London's Kings Cross station.  Today there is a wall at the actual platform 9 with an embedded luggage trolley!  Visit the station, and you're sure to see Potter fans of all ages with Hogwarts scarves flying pretending to walk through the wall, just like Harry, Ron and Hermione in the first film.

While you're at Kings Cross, make sure you check out adjacent St Pancras Station. The St Pancras Renaissance Hotel was actually used for the entrance to Kings Cross Station, its neo-gothic frontage being far more visually impressive.

Also make a visit to beautiful Victorian Leadenhall Market, where Diagon Alley and the Leaky Cauldron were filmed in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and various other real life Harry Potter filming locations in London like Australia House, which stood in for Gringotts Bank, the reptile house at London Zoo, and maybe even take a short trip to the Warner Bros studios at Leavesden where you can see the many sets, props, costumes and artefacts from the series

The Jacobite Steam Train

Jacobite Steam Train crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct

The Hogwarts Express is a real train, and you can take a trip on it!

The Hogsmeade village train station was filmed in the picturesque Yorkshire village of Goathland, but when the Harry Potter train is seen travelling over the rail bridge to Hogwarts in the films, it's actually the world-famous Jacobite Steam Train that you're seeing on its way over the magnificent 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct, in the Scottish Highlands.

In real life, the route taken by the train has been described as the greatest railway journey in the world, and is wonderfully scenic, passing many of the beautiful Harry Potter filming locations in Scotland.

You can take the ride of a lifetime on this magical steam train for the 42 miles between Fort William and Mallaig on the West Highland Railway Line. You'll enjoy breathtaking views and perhaps partake of a Butterbeer Hot Chocolate or a Dementor's Kiss from the trolley

The Highlands of Scotland

Clouds swirl around the Three Sisters of Glen Coe mountain range

JK Rowling has said in interviews that she always imagined Hogwarts to be in Scotland, so it's appropriate that some of the most stunning scenes depicting the grounds of the Harry Potter Castle were filmed in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

Look out for the location of Hagrid's hut at Glencoe, near the Clachaig Inn, which is also where Hermione punches Malfoy in The Prisoner of Azkaban, and Loch Eilt with its tiny island of Eilean Na Moine which was the location of Dumbeldore's grave in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Desolate landscape of lochans and drumlins seen at Rannoch Moor

Keep an eye out too for Loch Morar, the largest freshwater lake in Britain, which along with nearby Loch Arkaig and Loch Shiel were digitally blended together to create Hogwarts Lake.

As you pass desolate Rannoch Moor imagine yourself in The Deathly Hallows Part 1, where the Dementors board the train looking for Harry.

Nearby are Steall Falls, Britain's second highest waterfall, and the surrounding beauty of Glen Nevis, it's been a filming location multiple times in the Harry Potter movies, most notably as the scenic background to some exciting Quidditch games!

Three friends look down on Victoria Street

Even without the Harry Potter connection, Edinburgh has long been associated with ghosts and witches. No filming for the Harry Potter movies was done in Edinburgh, but there are reminders everywhere of how the beautiful old town's medieval architecture, winding alleys and rich history fired JK Rowling's imagination while she was a resident.

Victoria Street

Curving upwards from Grassmarket to George IV Bridge,  when you amble up this atmospheric street with its colourful and enchanting antique shops and coffee houses it won't be difficult to believe that it was the inspiration for Diagon Alley.  The Harry Potter souvenir shops and the joke shop at the bottom of the street add to the magical feel, and there's a Harry Potter plaque and mural on nearby Candlemaker Row.

Greyfriar's Kirkyard

The spooky old graveyard that JK Rowling regularly spent time exploring reveals tombstones with names like Thomas Riddell, William McGonagall and Elizabeth Moodie. Coincidence? We think not!

George Heriot School viewed from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle

George Heriot's School

Just a short walk from Victoria Street, this grand school's buildings are strikingly similar to Hogwarts. You can't wander the grounds, unfortunately, but when you look through the gates, it's worth remembering that the school's founder set up a fund to care for and give free school places to orphaned children, which continues today. It's been remarked upon that Tom Riddle and Harry Potter were both orphans who found a home at Hogwarts, hmm….

The Elephant House Café and Spoon Café

JK Rowling hung out in The Elephant House on George IV Bridge and in Spoon (previously Nicolson's) on Nicolson Street while she wrote The Philosopher's Stone, and she finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in room 552 of the grand Balmoral Hotel next to Waverley train station now known as the JK Rowling Suite.

Harry Potter Filming Locations in Scotland: A Complete Guide

Almost Ginger blog owner at Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read the disclaimer here .

Where is the most magical place for Harry Potter fans to visit? Some would argue London, what with the Harry Potter Studios just a short train ride north and all of those fantastic filming locations in London like Piccadilly Circus and Grimmauld Place. Others might say Edinburgh , the “Birthplace” of the books. Personally, I would say the Highlands of Scotland. And seeking out some of the Harry Potter locations in Scotland should be on every Potterhead’s Bucket List.

Scotland’s cinematic and epic landscapes are weaved throughout all eight films , particularly as the Hogwarts Express steams through the Highlands en route to Hogwarts School in almost every movie. Several lochs, waterfalls and moors around Scotland were used to heighten the awe and excitement already found in these adaptations and you can absolutely visit every single one for yourself!

I’ve visited all of these Harry Potter Scotland locations (except one!) including a ride on The Jacobite Steam Train over Glenfinnan Viaduct . This guide will detail exactly where all of the Harry Potter locations are in Scotland , which films and scenes they appeared in and how to get there via car and public transport (where possible!) including a map. Basically, everything you need to know so you can visit the Scotland Harry Potter locations too!

Harry Potter Locations Scotland: Where was Harry Potter filmed in Scotland?

Every Single Harry Potter Filming Location in Scotland

1. rannoch moor, bridge of orchy.

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) and  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1  (2010).

Which Scenes?  Hogwarts Express briefly travels through this area in  Half-Blood Prince  and the Dementors stop the train in this area at the beginning of  Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Would you believe this Harry Potter location in Scotland isn’t most known for its appearance in the wizard boy series? Corrour Station in Rannoch Moor played a prominent role in the 1996 British cult classic Trainspotting  and it’s 2017 sequel. But the moor’s burnt orange and strangely flat landscape (for Scotland, anyway, which is basically one giant hill) offer an eery setting for the later, darker Harry Potter films.

How to Get There

Via Car –  Rannoch Moor Viewpoint is on the A82, the main road between Glasgow and Fort William. I started off using the postcode PA36 4AG but our Sat Nav/GPS directed us to turn right down some random side road which is very incorrect. Keep on the A82 until you reach the Rannoch Moor Viewpoint (pinned on the map) and there is a small layby you can pull into to park which might be tricky if the road is particularly busy. And it sometimes is during summer but in spring/winter it’ll be really quiet!

Via Public Transport –  Though it’s not the  exact  Harry Potter location, taking the train from Fort William or Glasgow to Corrour Station as I mentioned above is the best way to visit the general Rannoch Moor area via public transport. I’ve written a whole separate guide on visiting Corrour Station from Glasgow which you can find below…

Corrour Station in Scotland: How to Visit the Trainspotting Location

Trainspotting and T2 Trainspotting Filming Locations in Scotland

2. Loch Etive in Glen Etive

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix  (2005) and  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1  (2010).

Which Scenes?  The loch can be seen briefly in the background when the Hogwarts Express travels through the Highlands in Order of the Phoenix  and Harry, Ron and Hermione camp on the shores of this loch while searching for Horcruxes when Ron decides to leave the group and Hermione ties her scarf on a tree in Deathly Hallows Part 1.

There are some seriously gorgeous lochs featured in the Harry Potter series. Prepare for loch overload! Over-loch! Anyway… The first loch on the list is Loch Etive , not a million miles away from Glen Coe . It’s a sea loch stretching 30km which is why it has a thin sliver of beach around its banks. When we visited in August 2020, the loch was surprisingly busy with families camping in the area so despite the extremely remote location, it’s beauty still seems to draw people there.

Via Car –  There is a car park at the northern tip of the loch (which is where Harry Potter scenes take place, luckily!) called Glen Etive Estate Parking. It’s free but we visited on a Sunday afternoon in August so the car park was very  busy. In winter, I imagine it’ll be completely deserted. Use the postcode PH49 4JA which will direct you straight to the car park. Unfortunately, it’s a 30/40 minute drive down a single track road and then back up again to the A82 so not the most convenient location.

Via Public Transport –  I don’t think there is any way you can reach this Harry Potter in Scotland location without a taxi fare costing you £££!

Loch Etive in Glen Etive, a Harry Potter Filming Location in Scotland

3. Clachaig Gully in Glen Coe

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004),  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) and  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince  (2009).

Which Scenes?  Hagrid’s hut is set here and the students visit Hagrid after Divination and for Buckbeak’s execution in  Prisoner of Azkaban , Harry visits Hagrid and witnesses the thestrals for the first time and the three students visit Hagrid before Umbridge fires him in Order of the Phoenix and Slughorn and Harry mourn Aragog with Hagrid here in  Half-Blood Prince.

One of the top Harry Potter locations in Scotland for me, hands down. Hagrid’s hut was moved from the edges of Black Park in Slough to Clachaig Gully by director Alfonso Cuarón in Prisoner of Azkaban.  That man changed so much about the series for the better. It’s a  much  more dramatic location with a little lochen in the background and mist settling on the hilltops. Fern has taken over where the hut used to stand but you can still imagine the scenes unfolding in that location.

Via Car –  You can park at the Clachaig Inn, so follow the postcode PH49 4HX which is a short detour off the A82. Continue by walking up the road to the left of the pub and you’ll see a narrow path next to the road (picture below) that you can walk up into the fern. The exact site of Hagrid’s Hut is pinned on the map above. It’s literally no more than a 10-minute walk from the car park to the filming location.

Via Public Transport – If you’re already staying in the general Glen Coe area, either on an organised trip or you’ve taken a CityLink bus from Glasgow, it’s definitely not impossible. You could actually stay at the Clachaig Inn for starters, or take a taxi from another local hotel or lodge provided it’s not 50 miles away.

4. Steall Waterfall in Glen Nevis

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001),  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002),  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004),  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) and  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince  (2009).

Which Scenes?  The background scenery for all Quidditch matches in the films listed and the setting of the first Triwizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire  (2005).

I secretly love it when a popular activity or “top thing to do” in a city or region is also a filming location. Because even though I look  like a regular tourist, I’m actually  an undercover, super nerdy location hunter. AKA a really cool person. Steall Waterfall in Glen Nevis is one of the top activities to do in Fort William (aside from climbing Ben Nevis , the tallest peak in the UK). It’s a 120m tall waterfall, the second tallest in Scotland, and it’s a lovely way to spend a morning . The trek is a bit tricky because there are a few waterfalls and rocks to clamber over but there’s basically no elevation so you don’t need an amazing level of fitness.

Via Car –  It’s only a 20-minute drive from Fort William to Glen Nevis Car Park (postcode PH33 6SY) and the parking is free. It’s a sizeable car park but I recommend getting there fairly early. We arrived between 9:00-9:30 in the morning on an August Bank Holiday and that was a great time to go. Not just because the car park was full by midday, but the path to the waterfall is quite narrow and you don’t want to have to constantly stop to pass tonnes of people on your walk.

The hike takes around 30/40 minutes (depending on how many times you stop for photos) and begins at the car park, so you’ll find it really easily.

Via Public Transport –  Definitely doable! If you’re already staying in Fort William for The Jacobite Steam Train, putting aside a morning for this hike is a great idea. You’ll need to arrange a taxi from Fort William and back again, but I actually saw a couple of women get out of a taxi at Glen Nevis Car Park so people clearly do it.

Almost Ginger blog owner at Steall Waterfall and Gorge in Glen Nevis, Scotland

5. Loch Arkaig

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2  (2011).

Which Scenes?  After stealing from Bellatrix Lestrange’s vault at Gringotts, Harry, Ron and Hermione hitch a ride on the back of a dragon and are dropped off in this loch at the start of Deathly Hallows Part 2.  Also featured in some scenes via CGI with the Eilean na Moine island as it’s a bigger, wider loch than Loch Eilt (see N.7).

Definitely one of the most remote, off-the-beaten-path Harry Potter filming locations in Scotland.  By Far.  Which might make it the most remote Harry Potter location ever ! Loch Arkaig is a long, secluded freshwater loch just north of Fort William measuring 12 miles total in length.

Via Car –  As with Loch Etive, the ‘Parking Place’ is actually right next to the precise filming location, so that’s perfect. Use the postcode PH34 4EL for Murlaggan but you’ll need to continue driving until you reach the Parking Place (photo below) which is about 15 minutes further. I’m not going to lie, it’s a 90-minute drive from Fort William to the Parking Place and much of that is a single track, bumpy road. It ain’t fun. Then you’ve got to drive it back again.

This location is beautiful, but I’ll put a “diehard Harry Potter fans only” sticker on it because the long drive might not be worth it to most.

Via Public Transport –  You ain’t getting here by bus or train, pal. Maybe someone has a Nimbus 2000 you can borrow?

Almost Ginger blog owner at Loch Arkaig, a Harry Potter Filming Location in Scotland

6. Loch Morar

Which Films?  Various  Harry Potter  films. Most likely all the same films that Loch Shiel featured in (see N.9).

Which Scenes?  Unknown.

This is a bit of a ‘meh’ Harry Potter location because the only reason it features on this list is due to its use as a second unit location. Meaning it’s not one of the big boy Harry Potter locations but was used for sporadic CGI/special effects shots. While Loch Shiel is the main loch that stood in as Hogwarts’ Great Lake, Loch Morar was utilised for some close-up shots, as needed. It’s the deepest loch in Scotland though, so that’s a fun fact. You might need that little tidbit for a pub quiz.

It’s probably a very beautiful loch, but I just paid it a quick visit on an  extremely  wet and misty day. So my photos aren’t that great!

Via Car –  It’s not too far off the A830, which is the main road between Mallaig and Fort William. We parked quite close to the town of Morar itself at the Our Lady of Perpetual Succour & St Cumin’s RC Church (great name) which has the postcode PH40 4PB. The church has quite a big car park (picture below) and it was easy for me to just nip out and take a few snaps of the loch opposite before returning to shelter.

Via Public Transport –  Morar has a train station on the West Highland train line between Fort William and Mallaig, so you can absolutely visit this loch via public transport. Check out ScotRail’s website for timetable and ticket information.

Loch Morar in Morar, a Harry Potter Filming Location in Scotland

7. Eilean na Moine in Loch Eilt

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004),  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005),  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1  (2010) and  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2  (2011).

Which Scenes?  Harry and Lupin take a walk next to this island whilst chatting about Dementors and Hagrid skips stones here after attending Buckbeak’s sentencing in Prisoner of Azkaban , briefly seen from the window of the Hogwarts Express in Goblet of Fire and the island is the setting of Dumbledore’s grave in Deathly Hallows Part 1  and  Deathly Hallows Part 2.

I love these tiny little islands covered in trees dotted around in some Scottish lochs. I think if pixies exist, they’d live somewhere like these tiny islands. Eilean na Moine in Loch Eilt was the picturesque wee island used in the Harry Potter movies, though you might not remember it being in such a small loch close to the banks! That’s because Eilean na Moine was often CGI’d into Loch Arkaig in the later Harry Potter films , which is a much bigger, wider loch.

Via Car –  Very similar to Loch Morar, the loch is just off the A830 road using postcode PH38 4LZ but parking is a lot trickier. There is a very  slim gravelly layby that has obviously just been worn down by people parking up there. But it’s not an actual layby. Or there is a very small place for a car to park next to a gate. I’ve pinned on my map above where you can park near the island, but I recommend checking out the road on Google Street View first so you know what you’re dealing with.

Then, it’s just a short walk down a worn path through the trees to see the island up close.

Via Public Transport –  The closest train station to Eilean na Moine is Lochailort Station and its also on the West Highland train line like Morar Station. It’s a 30-minute walk from the station and I’m not 100% sure there’s a decent path or pavement. However, if you’re travelling on The Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig during your trip, you can spot it from the right side of the train! The second photo below is proof of this, so that might be a convenient alternative.

Eilean na Moine island in Loch Eilt, a Harry Potter Filming Location in Scotland

8. Glenfinnan Viaduct

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002),  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban  (2004) and  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire  (2005).

Which Scenes?  Ron and Harry fly the Ford Anglia car over the bridge and are almost hit by the Hogwarts Express in  Chamber of Secrets , the Dementors stop the steam train over this viaduct in  Prisoner of Azkaban and the Hogwarts Express travels over the viaduct briefly in  Goblet of Fire.

You knew this one was coming, right? This Harry Potter filming location in Scotland is  the  most recognisable, iconic location in the entire series. A lot of people think Glenfinnan Viaduct features in most of the films, but it’s actually just in three! That’s how much people associate this location with the Hogwarts Express journey through the Highlands.

You simply  cannot  miss this Harry Potter location if you are on a quest to see Scotland Harry Potter locations. Try and head to the viaduct when The Jacobite Steam Train is due to be crossing, though it’s still worth visiting regardless. The viaduct is just as exciting to see in real life as you’d expect.

Via Car –  Like the previous two locations, Glenfinnan is also on the A830 road between Fort William and Mallaig and you can park at the Glenfinnan Visitors Centre Car Park using the postcode PH37 4LT. All-day parking is £3 here. There are some free car parks nearby (though the main one that people recommend is now the ‘Wee Harry Potter Bridge Project’ and you can’t enter it at time of writing)

I’ve got tonnes more information on visiting Glenfinnan including where to stand and what time the steam train crosses the viaduct on a separate blog post here .

Via Public Transport –  And like the previous two locations, Glenfinnan Station is  also  on the West Highland train line! Makes sense considering Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway bridge.  And  by travelling on this train line, you’ll actually cross the viaduct itself. From Glenfinnan Station, you can easily hike up the Glenfinnan Viaduct Trail to the best viewpoint to watch the train cross the Harry Potter bridge.

Glenfinnan Viaduct, a Harry Potter Filming Location in Scotland

9. Loch Shiel in Glenfinnan

Which Scenes?  When the students arrive at Hogwarts on boats in Philosopher’s Stone , during a wide shot before Oliver Wood leads the Gryffindor team out for Quidditch practice in Chamber of Secrets , when the students arrive at Hogwarts via carriages and when Harry rides Buckbeak over the Great Lake in Prisoner of Azkaban , when students from Hogwarts, Durmstrang and Beauxbaton all arrive at Hogwarts and when they leave at the end and also during the second Triwizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire , briefly seen when the students arrive at Hogwarts in  Order of the Phoenix and in the background of Harry talking to Hermione on the balcony next to the Astronomy tower at the end of  Half-Blood Prince.

Honestly, Glenfinnan spoils us HP fans. All the best Scotland Harry Potter locations are in Glenfinnan , which is actually quite a tiny place. Ten points to Glenfinnan! Directly opposite the viaduct is a beautiful  sea loch called Loch Shiel and it appears in almost every film as the Great Lake (or Black Lake). You really can’t miss this filming location, especially if you’re wanting to see the viaduct anyway. It’s an excellent bonus feature.

Via Car – How you get to Loch Shiel is exactly how you get to the Glenfinnan Viaduct! It’s literally opposite the Glenfinnan Visitors Centre Car Park, like a 3-minute walk away. You can’t miss it. Head up to Glenfinnan Viewpoint for a panoramic vista of both Loch Shiel (pictured below) and the viaduct from a distance. But it’s worth walking up to the loch itself, too, so you can check out Glenfinnan Monument .

Via Public Transport –  Annnnd same again. Don’t say I don’t treat you!

Loch Shiel from Glenfinnan Viewpoint, a Harry Potter Filming Location in Scotland

10. Black Rock Gorge

Which Films?  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire  (2005).

Which Scenes?  The Hungarian Horntail dragon chases Harry over this gorge in the first Triwizard Tournament in  Goblet of Fire.

You’ll notice that the previous nine Harry Potter locations were all concentrated in one area of the West Highlands near Glen Coe, Fort William and Mallaig. Which is why it was (relatively) easy to tick them all off in one trip.

However, if you look at the map at the beginning of this blog post, you’ll see Black Rock Gorge is waaaay up north above Inverness and not remotely near any of the other filming locations. So sadly, this is the only Harry Potter film location I’ve not actually visited yet! Maybe if I do the North Coast 500 I can squeeze in a quick visit.

Via Car –  The gorge is (apparently) easy to find via marked paths in Evanton Wood which is just off the A9 road roughly a 30-minute drive north of Inverness. I think the car park is either at or near Blackrock Caravan & Camping Park (postcode IV16 IUN) and there is probably a small fee. I believe the gorge is an easy, yet often muddy, 2.5-mile walk from the car park and there are bridges running over the gorge so you can look down into it.

Via Public Transport –  The nearest train station is a 90-minute walk away (Alness) which is a bit far! It’s probably not very accessible without a car I’m afraid.

11. The Jacobite Steam Train

This is a “Harry Potter location that’s not really a filming location but Harry Potter fans love it so I’m including it anyway” entry. The Jacobite Steam Train travels from Fort William to Mallaig during the summer months over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Though it wasn’t used as the Hogwarts Express train (that train is sitting on the backlot at the Harry Potter Studios ), the journey still attracts probably hundreds of Potterheads every year to recreate the magical experience we’ve seen in the films.

I’ve written a whole separate guide detailing exactly when and how to get tickets for the steam train, everything you need to know about riding the real-life Hogwarts Express including how and when to photograph the train crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct. It’s all in the post below!

How to Plan a Trip to Visit the Harry Potter Locations in Scotland

How many days will i need.

I’m going to assume you’re travelling to the locations from the south. This isn’t exactly how I saw the filming locations but it’s very close and will provide a rough idea of how much time you need to see them all. Also, we stayed in Fort William .

  • Day 1 –  Drive up to Fort William and visit Rannoch Moor, Loch Etive and Clachaig Gully on the way.
  • Day 2 –  Hike to Steall Waterfall in the morning. And drive to Loch Arkaig in the afternoon.
  • Day 3 –  Ride The Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig and back.
  • Day 4 –  Watch the train cross Glenfinnan Viaduct and visit Loch Shiel in the morning. Drive to Eilean na Moine in Loch Eilt and Loch Morar in the afternoon.
  • Day 5 –  Leave Fort William and drive back home!

Obviously, I’ve not included Black Rock Gorge. And even though the filming locations are concentrated in one area, many of the roads are single track and rough because its such a remote and mountainous region. So, if you want to visit all of the locations including a ride on the Jacobite Steam Train, I’d recommend four nights in Fort William. But if you don’t have that amount of time you could skip Eilean na Moine in Loch Eilt (especially if you make the effort to see it from the Jacobite train), Loch Morar and Loch Arkaig and squeeze it down to three nights.

How to Travel: Car or Public Transport?

I think you’ve already figured out that if you want to visit  every  Harry Potter Scotland location, you need a car. And I hate giving that as an answer because I wish places were more accessible by public transport as I do not like driving! I’d travel everywhere by train if I could.

You could still visit some of the Harry Potter locations in Scotland by public transport and have an AMAZING time. Take a train up to Glasgow and then either a ScotRail train or CityLink bus to Fort William. If you’re travelling from London, you could even take a Caledonian Sleeper train overnight and arrive in Fort William in the morning. Wouldn’t that be awesome?! Or is it just me that’s itching to take a journey on a sleeper train…?

Make Fort William your base. Spend one day of your trip on The Jacobite Steam Train which will be easy enough because the journey starts and begins in Fort William. And you can see Eilean na Moine in Loch Eilt during your journey. The next day, you can take the train to Glenfinnan and watch the steam train cross the Viaduct and also see Loch Shiel . Then in the afternoon, take a taxi and hike to  Steall Waterfall.

You will at least pass through Glen Coe and Rannoch Moor on your way to Fort William from Glasgow. So you can probably see more of the filming locations than you might think!

Where to Stay in Scotland to Explore the Harry Potter Locations

You could technically stay in Mallaig , Fort William or even Glen Coe for part of your trip to explore the Harry Potter locations in the area, but staying in Fort William definitely makes the most logistical sense. Here are some great options for accommodation in Fort William depending on your budget.

Fort William

  • The Jacobite View AirBnB – This is the apartment we booked for our trip to scout out the Harry Potter locations and it was perfect! Really clean, well-decorated and couldn’t be better located. Fort William Train Station was literally right outside our window so we could watch The Jacobite Steam Train roll in every morning and roll out every night. Plus, Morrison’s supermarket is within walking distance and you could self-check-in.
  • Fort William Backpackers   – If I were solo travelling, I’d choose to stay at this hostel. And I always book my hostels through HostelWorld to take advantage of their flexible booking and accurate reviews. Fort William Backpackers is in a really central location and even provides Free WiFi and parking.
  • Lime Tree An Ealdhain Hotel & Restaurant   – And if I wanted to splash out on a cosy BnB, Lime Tree seems to have a quintessential cottage vibe but with a fresh modern interior. The log fire, four-poster beds and reading nooks would surely make anyone want to stay forever!

Other Harry Potter Sites in Scotland

A short city break in Scotland’s capital city of Edinburgh is a fantastic way to bookend your Harry Potter Scotland trip. It might not have been used as a filming location, but there are many inspirational and pop culture locations relating to the Wizarding World in this beautiful medieval city.

Grab a hearty lunch at Elephant House café, the supposed “birthplace of Harry Potter” where J.K. Rowling wrote some of the chapters featured in the early books. Book a night in the Rowling Suite at the swanky Balmoral Hotel where she finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and walk up Victoria Street , one of the inspirations behind Diagon Alley.

And there are so many more fantastic inspirational Harry Potter locations in Edinburgh! I’ve written a complete self-guided tour of them all in a separate blog post below (including a map).

Tours of Harry Potter Locations in Scotland

There are so many great Harry Potter Scotland tours if you’d rather someone else do all the effort and planning. Day tours from cities like Inverness and Edinburgh are a great option if you’d rather stay in a bigger city than Fort William and explore a Scottish city on the same trip.

Or, you could check out the main Harry Potter locations  as part of a multi-day trip  around other parts of the Scottish Highlands! I recently spent  one month working on the Isle of Skye  and it was a fantastic experience.

I love  GetYourGuide  for day tours and multi-day trips because they always have a great selection and their refund policy is  amazing.  Check out this  day trip from Edinburgh  and this  day trip from Inverness . And this  three-day Scottish Highlands adventure will guide you around the mythical Loch Ness and the Battlefield of Culloden, the epic scenery of the Isle of Skye as well as a ride on the Jacobite steam train and Harry Potter tour of Scotland!

More Harry Potter Locations and Scotland Information

As well as my four day trip around the Harry Potter filming locations in the West Highlands, I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Scotland. Specifically, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Isle of Skye . Edinburgh is my favourite city in the world (upon the last count, I’ve visited seven times) and I’ve written this three days in Edinburgh guide for first-time visitors.

If you’re looking for other filming locations to visit around Edinburgh and you love  The Da Vinci Code  (2006), check out my guide to visiting  Rosslyn Chapel . I’ve visited the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a few times too as well as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo .

Going to the Harry Potter worlds/lands at Universal is the highlight of our family visit to the resort almost every time we go. And that’s really saying something considering we plan to visit Universal a few times each year! As a family, we’ve read all the books together and seen the movies. There is something so magical about the story and Universal found a way to bring that magic to life in a way that you must see to believe.

Where is Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter?

The Harry Potter themed worlds are located within Universal’s major theme parks — Harry Potter is not a separate theme park at Universal, and it’s not part of Disney World .

Universal has two main theme parks: Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios . A third park, Epic Universe , is under construction and due to open sometime in 2025. Each of these parks has a Harry Potter component.

  • Hogsmeade — Islands of Adventure
  • Diagon Alley — Universal Studios Florida
  • Ministry of Magic — Epic Universe ( opening 2025 )

Each experience is different, so I don’t recommend limiting yourself to just one when you go to Universal Orlando. Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley have a huge variety of rides, experiences, and food to enjoy, so I am going to make sure I cover it all so you can plan your trip with as much knowledge as possible.

Let’s begin with the original Harry Potter themed land, Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure!

Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure

Universal Orlando Hogsmeade

Hogsmeade is my favorite of the two Harry Potter worlds currently open at Universal. Between the sweeping views of Hogwarts castle, the world-famous rides , and the Three Broomsticks, this world has it all.

Hogsmeade was built in 2010 and was the first Wizarding World of Harry Potter developed in Universal Orlando. The resort worked hand in hand with J.K. Rowling and filmmakers to make sure that the world of Harry Potter came to life in the most realistic way possible.

Wizarding World Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Signs

The original development of the park was a pioneering move in the realm of creating immersive environments, and you can definitely understand why when you walk around the Hogsmeade and try the rides. The world is centered around Hogwarts castle, which still takes my breath away every time I walk into the park.

The park combines adventure, excitement, and magic in a surreal, immersive experience. If you haven’t been before, you might think that to enjoy Hogsmeade you’ll have to take some time away from the thrill rides of Islands of Adventure. Thankfully that’s not the case!

Hogsmeade has some amazing rides for you and your family to try when you visit — so to my dads out there, make sure you don’t drink too much butterbeer right at the start!

Hogsmeade has great rides spread out throughout the land, and it even has one of the most highly-rated roller coasters in the world. The Harry Potter rides here are:

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

  • Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure

Flight of the Hippogriff

Hogwarts express.

These rides combine the unbelievable surroundings of the castle and town of Hogsmeade, life-like interactions and visuals, and great storytelling to curate an interactive theme park experience that you will never forget.

This ride is not a typical roller coaster. A combination of a twisting/turning track, along with robot arm mounted vehicles, makes you feel like you are completely immersed in the Harry Potter Universe. Forbidden Journey has incredibly high-quality special effects that really help seal the illusion.

On the ride you flash around Hogwarts and you get to see a bit of every part of the castle grounds. Last time my son and I were on it, I remember seeing the Whomping Willow, flying directly through a Quidditch match, zooming through the forbidden forest, and more.

You get to see all the parts of the castle grounds that you will remember from the movie. I’ve heard the ride called a “Harry Potter highlight reel,” and I don’t disagree!

In terms of roller coaster thrill, this ride is definitely in between Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and the Flight of the Hippogriff, but I’d still say that this ride is great for kids of all ages as long as they meet the height requirement .

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

The ride is a journey from start to finish. The story starts while you are waiting in line, where you can see bits of Hagrid’s work as he has cared for hundreds of magical creatures throughout the years. There are writings on the walls from past Hogwarts students and even parts of Hagrid’s nursery to be seen.

Once you get closer to the start of the ride, you can begin to hear the sound of a motorbike revving. I have ridden tons of roller coasters in my life, but that sound gets my heart pumping every time with excitement as I wait for the ride to begin.

After you sit down on your motorbike/sidecar and ride begins, you are fired out of the landing bay. Immediately you start flying through the sky, passing the rooftops of Hogsmeade, zooming around parts of the castle, past a lake, and then toward the Forbidden Forest. You really feel like you’re on Hagrid’s motorbike!

It truly is a must-try when you’re in Universal Orlando. One thing to keep in mind is that this ride often has the longest lines in Hogsmeade, and sometimes even in all of Islands of Adventure. So plan ahead when you want to visit to come during a busier time because the ride is excluded from Universal’s Express Pass because of its popularity!

After Hagrid’s, the Flight of the Hippogriff is a way to take a calmer flight around the grounds of Hogwarts. The ride is definitely on the shorter side and isn’t as fast as Hagrid’s, so it’s a great ride for younger kids !

In the line for the ride you can see an interpretation of Hagrid’s home, including the pumpkin patch, his hut, and more. As the name hints, the ride is supposed to mimic flying on a hippogriff’s back around Hogwarts castle. Just like when Harry rode Buckbeak in the Prisoner of Azkaban , you will be soaring through the grounds, in between buildings, and enjoying some of the amazing views.

There are a few really fun drops and turns, but I do have to admit that the ride is a little short and sweet for my liking.

Again, while this isn’t the most thrilling ride in the park, it still has some great views and is particularly good for kids.

You will remember from the Harry Potter books that the Hogwarts Express is the train that takes the students to and from Hogwarts. And thanks to the magic of Universal, you and your family can ride it! The Hogwarts Express is a unique attraction in that it is both a themed entertainment ride and a practical form of transportation.

Hogwarts Express serves as a way to get between the Harry Potter areas in Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. It’s really the best way to connect between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Because the attraction takes you from one theme park to another, you must have the Park-to-Park pass to ride it. I absolutely recommend getting this pass — not only for the chance to ride the Hogwarts Express, but also because it gives significantly more mobility for your day in Universal at only a slightly higher price point.

We love to dedicate a whole day to just Harry Potter and we always get the Park-to-Park pass to do that. We normally start the day in Hogsmeade and then hop on the Hogwarts Express to Diagon Alley in the afternoon.

The Hogwarts Express itself is a special ride, and while on the surface it may appear a bit simple, it’s one of my favorite rides at Universal .

When you board the train in Hogsmeade, you will be traveling toward London’s Kings Cross station. The train journey itself uses life-like visual effects that tell a story around your car as you move. You’ll see some impressive scenery and a few Harry Potter characters through the (video) windows of the train. Meanwhile, shadows of others walking in the train’s corridors will pass by the frosted glass windows of your compartment. The train cars are practically identical to how they were portrayed in the movies, so you’re going to feel as if you just stepped into the movies and novels that you’ve loved for decades.

Tip: Make sure to ride the train in both directions — it’s a different experience each way!

Ollivanders Wand Shop

Wand boxes stacked to the ceiling at Ollivanders

Getting your own wand is a truly magical experience that makes you feel like you’re an incoming first year student at Hogwarts. When my family and I went to Ollivanders , my wife and I didn’t get wands but Ben went through the entire experience, smiling ear to ear the whole time.

Small groups are ushered into the shop and one lucky witch or wizard is selected by the Wandkeeper to participate in an interactive presentation. Of course, pairing the wand with the wizard can be tricky — it doesn’t always go quite right the first or second time.

Luckily, the Wandkeeper is an expert and everything always seems to work out in the end. (Frugal wizards will be pleased to learn that you’re not obligated to purchase the wand, even if you’re chosen to participate).

Everyone then makes their way into a separate sales area to view their own wand options in a more traditional “retail” environment.

Note: if you’ll allow me to step “outside of the magic” for just a moment here — there are Ollivanders wand shops in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. While Ollivanders at Hogsmeade is probably the most intimate and movie-accurate of the Ollivanders experiences, it’s not necessarily the most practical due to the cramped size of the shop. If you’re going with a larger group, are visiting during peak season, or are simply interested in shopping for a wand, I’d suggest opting for the experience at Diagon Alley / Universal Studios instead. You’ll likely have less of a wait (if any), and a bit more breathing room.

The Frog Choir is a great way to take a break from the rides and enjoy a good show. The performance lasts about 10 minutes, so it won’t take up too much of your time while you’re in the park. I’ve seen the show a few times, and I’ll admit that once you have stood and watched it once or twice, that’s usually enough (though I don’t mind sort of bopping along as I pass by).

You’ll get to hear some great songs inspired by Harry Potter, performed in a catchy a cappella style. The highlight of the performance is Something Wicked This Way Comes , as featured in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban .

It’s a great way to see a moment from the Harry Potter books brought to life. Although, the show itself is tough to compare to any of the world class rides that are right next door.

I’d say that the Frog Choir is particularly good for kids who will find the extra magic in the experience by thinking back to seeing the choir’s performance in the Harry Potter movies.

This show happens several times a day in Hogsmeade, so check the app or ask a Team Member when you should stop by!

Triwizard Spirit Rally

The Triwizard Spirit Rally alternates throughout the day with the Frog Choir, so if you stick around by the stage in Hogsmeade you can see one show after the other! Like the Frog Choir, this is a quick show — a bit under ten minutes — that will put a smile on your face. The show features the different schools that visited Hogwarts for the Triwizard tournament in the Goblet of Fire .

You will get to see the Beauxbatons students spinning and dancing as the Durmstrang students show off their martial arts staff skills, just like in the movie when the schools enter the Great Hall for the first time.

I prefer this show to the Frog choir just because there is a bit more action, and my kids agree!

Because these shows alternate several times a day on the same stage, I wouldn’t worry about planning ahead to see them. You will likely just pass by them at some point while you are in the park!

Nighttime Show

Spectacular lighting effects on Hogwarts Castle

Depending on the time of year, you might be able to catch a nighttime projection and fireworks show at Hogwarts Castle.

  • Hogwarts Always (starting June 14, 2024) — Experience all the iconic moments of a year at Hogwarts including the Sorting Ceremony, House Cup, and more, capped off by one of four different endings saluting each Hogwarts house.
  • Nighttime Lights — Originally started as a part of the Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter program, the show lights up Hogwarts castle with brilliant displays on its walls along with lights in the sky.
  • Dark Arts — Autumn (around the same time as Halloween Horror Nights across the way at the studios park) marks the arrival of a more sinister nighttime show, complete with Dementors, Death Eaters, and You-Know-Who.

Unfortunately, the schedule for these shows can be a bit tough to track down very far in advance, but they always occur after dark at Hogwarts Castle. Keep an eye on the Universal website when it gets close to your vacation date, because they will start to update show times a few days in advance of when they occur.

There are two main places to dine in Hogsmeade: the Hog’s Head or the Three Broomsticks. If these names sound familiar, it’s because both of these taverns are faithful recreations from the Harry Potter books!

Three Broomsticks

The Three Broomsticks is my favorite place to eat during my Harry Potter themed day. I remember the tavern very clearly from the movies, so it was a surreal experience to walk into a building I had never been in before, but felt like I had been there dozens of times. Once I was in, I could order a Butterbeer just like Harry, Ron, and Hermione did when they were students at Hogwarts.

Guests eating inside of Three Broomsticks, with dark pub décor

Image © Universal

One of the main reasons I love coming to the Three Broomsticks is it saves our family a bit of money, while giving us a great experience at the same time. Feeding a family of four at Universal can get expensive and the Three Broomsticks is definitely more cost-effective than the average restaurant in Universal Orlando.

One thing that really surprised me when I went is that Butterbeer is actually good!

A plastic cup of Butterbeer

The flavor of this non-alcoholic drink is really hard to describe — Universal says it’s “reminiscent of shortbread and butterscotch” — but my kids and I both loved it. The tavern also has some great salads, pies, desserts, and more so you and your family can have a full lunch or dinner here after some rides.

Hog’s Head

Hog’s Head is in the back of the Three Broomsticks, and it is definitely more of a bar than a restaurant. Although it’s technically a bar, it’s still very family friendly. Parents could grab a beer or a glass of wine while the kids enjoy some classic drinks from Harry Potter such as Pumpkin Juice or Butterbeer.

Between drinks, snacks, and meals, there is plenty available to spend your entire day in Hogsmeade, or in both Harry Potter worlds with a park-to-park pass (which is what I would recommend).

Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida

A fire-breathing dragon perches atop Gringott's Bank in Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley opened in 2014 at Universal Studios Florida, just a few years after Hogsmeade had opened at Islands of Adventure. Diagon Alley expands the Harry Potter experience at Universal Orlando Resort by adding locations such as Gringotts, the Leaky Cauldron, and Knockturn Alley.

To reach Diagon Alley, you’ll first head to the London section of Universal Studios, passing by well known Wizarding World landmarks such as King’s Cross Station and 12 Grimmauld Place. From there, look for the opening in the giant brick wall and head inside. Diagon Alley is well-hidden from mere Muggles — you’ll have to really look for it!

The nondescript entrance to Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley has fewer rides than Hogsmeade, but the quality certainly makes up for the lower quantity!

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is a thrill ride that incorporates surreal special effects, amazing designs, and a killer roller coaster to make one of the best rides in the park .

My daughter Ava was too young to ride this one the last time I was in Diagon Alley, so I went with Ben to give it a try. It was his first time on Escape From Gringotts and I think he was more impressed with this ride than any other in the park. He saw the Harry Potter films recently so he clearly remembered the scene when Harry, Ron, and Hermione try to steal the Sword of Gryffindor from Bellatrix Lestrange’s vault.

Like many of the other rides in Universal, the experience for Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts really begins while you are still in line. When you are waiting in line, you are standing in an exact replica of the Gringotts main hall. And when I say exact, I really mean exact! The lobby is identical to what you see in the movie when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are walking down the line of goblins to the main teller so they can try to bluff their way into the vaults.

Goblins hard at work at Gringotts

The grand hallway is filled with animated goblins counting coins, taking notes, and suspiciously starting you down as you walk along — and they are just the first of many life-like animations you will see along the way. Once you get to the end of the hallway, the head teller will sometimes talk to you and instruct you where to go next as you make your way to the start of the ride. They might even “pull you aside” and have you take a security ID photo using a retro film camera.

Once the ride is about to start you put on your 3D goggles and take a seat in the carriages which are reminiscent of those in the film. Right at the start of the ride you have some quick turns and big drops, and then all of a sudden the ride will stop and you will be met with a super high definition screen.

As you continue on with the ride you will see real-life holograms of Ron, Hermione, and Harry as you all run from the dragon together. Its really hard to appreciate just how similar it is to what we have all seen on the screen without trying it yourself. This is a must try if you are going to the Harry Potter worlds throughout Universal.

As mentioned earlier in this article, the Hogwarts Express travels back and forth between Diagon Alley at Universal Studios and Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure.

Here on the Diagon Alley side, you’ll actually need to make your way back out of the brick walls and onto the streets of “London” to enter King’s Cross station. There, you’ll be able to spot fellow travelers actually walking through the brick wall (thanks to a clever Pepper’s Ghost illusion) to reach Platform 9¾.

Guests pass through the brick wall to reach Platform 9 3/4

You’ll pass through too, and then hop aboard the train.

On your journey to Hogwarts, you’ll spot soaring owls and perhaps a flying motorbike just outside the “window” of your train. As the streets of London give way to the countryside, you’ll truly feel that you’re on your way to your first year at Hogwarts. Just watch out for Dementors!

The scenery on this journey is different from the trip going the other direction, so make sure to ride the train both ways!

And remember — you’ll need a Park-to-Park pass because you’re traveling between theme parks. It’s a worthy purchase because it lets you try Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Flight of the Hippogriff, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and more — all in the same day! Also keep in mind, the rides in the Harry Potter world are only a small part of the total experience of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, and there is so much more to enjoy while you are there!

Diagon Alley may be a bit short on rides, but it’s certainly not lacking for experiences. There’s so much to see and do in the way of live entertainment and interactive activities, that this is a fantastic place to simply while away a few hours. Heck, I could spend all day in here and never really get bored! The fire-breathing dragon alone is worth starting at for quite some time!

Knockturn Alley

This sketchy side street is where dirty deeds get done in the Wizarding World. It’s always nighttime inside this covered (and air-conditioned!) walkway, so it’s a huge relief from the blazing Florida heat .

Stop in at Borgin and Burkes to marvel at the oddities assembled there, and perhaps make your own Dark Arts purchase. If you’re buying an interactive wand , you’ll also find some spell locations here. Some of them are even “secret” spells, but they’ll show up in glow-in-the-dark ink on your wand map. And you can always be on the lookout for medallions embedded in the ground, showing you the correct wand maneuvers.

An emblem embedded in the ground, showing the wand movements necessary to activate special effects

Knockturn Alley is well-hidden. The primary entrance is a tunnel alongside a towering stack of cauldrons just to the right of the Leaky Cauldron restaurant. Another entrance is located to the left of Diagon Alley’s restrooms, directly underneath a giant window full of chandeliers.

Ollivanders

Just like in Hogsmeade, you can walk into Ollivanders at Diagon Alley to get a personalized wand from the Master Wand Craftsman himself. The overall feel of this shop is the same as in Hogsmeade so I won’t rehash all of the details again (if you missed the section on Ollivanders, scroll up and you can read more about it under the Hogsmeade Experiences section). This location does, however, have a higher capacity than the Hogsmeade version, and I find it is a bit more leisurely of an experience, especially if you really want to take the time to “shop” for your wand.

You might remember the Knight Bus as the slim, double decker bus that Harry rides, speeding through London traffic and bending time along the way. Located just outside Diagon Alley on the streets of London, the Knight Bus here is just a prop. So while you won’t get to ride it, it’s still cool to peek inside and perhaps take a photo. You will get to see the little shrunken head hanging at the front of the bus, the cots, and even a chandelier. While it’s definitely not the main attraction in the park, it’s another cool way that Universal brings the magic of Harry Potter to life!

Gringotts Money Exchange

While you are in Gringotts you can actually interact with the Goblins, and this is something my youngest, Ava, was able to get involved in. You can exchange real money for Gringotts money when you speak with the bank tellers.

An animatronic goblin oversees transactions

For all the parents out there, I know that the idea of trading real money for fake money is not the most exciting concept. But thankfully, the Gringotts money can be used for purchases all throughout Diagon Alley! So, you can take your Galleons and purchase a wand, some Hogwarts merchandise, candy, and more.

Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees

Like in Hogsmeade, you can see two shows while in Diagon Alley. The first is a singing production that performs wizard-themed songs. Celestina Warbeck doesn’t actually “appear” in the original books, but she’s certainly mentioned a few times throughout. Universal claims that this group is Molly Weasley’s favorite band, so there you go!

You will get to hear performances of “never-before-heard” songs such as ‘A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love’, ‘You Charmed the Heart Right Out of Me’, and ‘You Stole My Cauldron But You Can’t Have My Heart’. The performance really adds to the atmosphere of Diagon Alley and is a great way to take a break from the rides and shops.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is where Harry and his friends first learn about the Deathly Hallows in the book series. In Diagon Alley, you will have a chance to watch these stories performed live on a stage in Universal Studios. The actors use props, puppets, and great sets to bring the story to life. This event is great for kids of all ages, and like the singing performance, is a great way to relax for a bit in between rides and other experiences.

Leaky Cauldron

Jaimie and I love to grab food at the Leaky Cauldron when we’re in Diagon Alley, and it is definitely our favorite place to eat in the park.

DIners at long tables underneath a large gabled ceiling

This restaurant in Diagon Alley may look run down and old (as it was designed to be), but the food is great. You can get food here all day, and generally it’s good pub food that you would expect to be able to get in any bar in London. For example, last time I went I ordered a Beef, Lamb & Guinness Stew and a Butterbeer. The Leaky Cauldron is also reasonably priced so you won’t have to spend too many Galleons to visit!

Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour

An ice cream concoction in a souvenir glass

Wizard and Muggle worlds combine with Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, where you can get a classic scoop or soft-served swirl of ice cream. Flavors range from the mundane to some great Harry Potter themed flavors. Depending on the menu-of-the-moment, you might find flavors such as:

  • Granny Smith
  • Earl Grey and Lavender
  • Chocolate Chili
  • Sticky Toffee Pudding
  • Salted Caramel Blondie
  • Chocolate and Raspberry
  • Orange Marmalade

Get it in a waffle cone or opt for the souvenir glass. You can also get refreshments like Pumpkin juice, teas, ciders, and more.

Eternelle’s Elixir of Refreshment

One great thing about Diagon Alley is that you will have no shortage of dining experiences. Eternelle’s is a small beverage stand where you can purchase a variety of ‘potions’ and ‘elixirs’. While these drinks look like potions, they still taste great and they make you feel like you are in Snape’s potion class drinking something mysterious that was just made for you. A few of the elixirs you can try may include:

  • Fire Protection Potion
  • Babbling Beverage
  • Draught of Peace
  • Elixir to Induce Euphoria

The Fountain of Fair Fortune

The Fountain of Fair Fortune was named after one of the tales in the Tales of Beedle the Bard. Here you can get drinks like Frozen Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, Butterbeer, Gillywater, and more. There’s also an extremely limited snack menu (mainly bags of chips and some soft-serve ice cream).

The Hopping Pot

Like the Fountain of Fair Fortune, The Hopping Pot is a quick service location with beverages and snacks. You can get all the same drinks as the Fountain of Fair Fortune and more, including Otter’s Fizzy Orange Juice, Peachtree Fizzing Tea, Fishy Green Ale, and more. The snack menu is also a bit more robust than Fountain of Fair Fortune’s, with the addition of several “pasties” (hand pies) such as Shepherd’s Pie, beef, or chicken.

Universal’s Epic Universe is Universal’s third major theme park, currently under construction and scheduled to open sometime in the 2025.

There will be a dedicated  Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic section of the park. Despite the name, the overall land/world will mainly be based in the 1920s Paris setting of the Fantastic Beasts books/films. But it will also be connected to London’s Ministry of Magic via the Métro-Floo .

Among the attractions will be:

  • Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry — You’re just in time for the long-awaited trial of the infamous Dolores Umbridge before the Wizengamot. Enter the Ministry’s iconic grand atrium and venture through other departments before boarding magical, omnidirectional lifts to watch the trial. Umbridge attempts to escape, of course. Join Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger (it is always  you three…) and a house-elf named Higgledy in the thrilling chase. 40″ height requirement.
  • Le Cirque Arcanus —  A full-scale theatre experience featuring live performers, aerialists, puppetry, and special effects to bring fantastic beasts to life. The ringmaster has stolen Newt Scamander’s suitcase in an effort to bring the failing circus back to its former glory, while employee Gwenlyn hopes to rescue the magical creatures.

Plenty more magical treats are in store, including themed dining, shopping, interactive wand experiences, and of course plenty of  Bièraubuerre (Butterbeer).

Is it worth delaying your trip to Universal to wait for Epic Universe to open? Probably not. There are already two amazing Harry Potter Worlds at Universal — you can enjoy them right away and save Epic Universe a later visit!

Want a Heads Up When Epic Universe is Ready To Book?

Universal Orlando’s Harry Potter worlds are some of my favorite parts of the entire resort. Both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley are unique and fun experiences, and these two areas alone are worth a trip to Universal Orlando. And I can’t wait to see how the new addition at Epic Universe turns out!

People have varying opinions about which Harry Potter World is their favorite, but I always say that when you visit you need to see both. Getting the Park-to-Park pass ensures that you can see all the best sights, rides, and experiences in both parks, and it allows you to ride the Hogwarts Express which is one of my favorite parts of the resort.

Even if you aren’t a Harry Potter fan, you must visit these themed areas when you are in Universal. Although, if you haven’t seen any of the movies yet, I’d recommend watching a few before you go because it will make the visit that much more special!

The Top 12 Things to Do in Omsk

Feel the love in the very heart of Russia

In Russia, all roads lead to Moscow , on account of the city's status as the national capital and its importance throughout history. If geography were the deciding factor, however, the Siberian city of Omsk would be the point where all Russia's roads converge—it's located literally in the heart of the country, approximately as far from Vladivostok as it is from the Belarusian border. Omsk boasts a spate of exciting attractions, even if you simply make a stop here as you ride the Trans-Siberian Railway eastward or westward.

Marvel at Assumption Cathedral

Orthodox architecture never gets old, even if you've been traveling in Russia for a long time. This is particularly the case when it comes to the Assumption Cathedral of Omsk, whose gold-and-turquoise domes look resplendent under the blue skies that bless Omsk during the warmer months of the year. The cathedral was built in 1891 under the orders Nicholas, the last Tsar of Russia.

Time Travel at Omsk Fortress

The bad news? Much of what was once Omsk Fortress is now a residential area, with the only notable landmark that still stands being Tobolsk Gate (think Paris' Arc de Triomphe , but yellow and smaller). The good news? There's essentially no reason for a military fortification to exist in today's peaceful Omsk, which means you can stroll amid parks and cafés and imagine the area being war-torn—a small sacrifice to make in exchange for not being blown to bits.

Go Green at Ptich'ya Gavan'

Or white, as it were: Omsk is covered with snow several months of the year, which means that its prized Ptich'ya Gavan' central park is often more of a winter wonderland than the green reprieve you experience in summer. The park is popular with local families, to whom you can say "Privet" (Hello) as you walk past.

Walk on Omsk's Artsy Side

Although the building that houses Omsk District Museum of Visual Arts is unmistakably Russian, the collection you find inside is surprisingly eclectic for a city deep in Russia's interior. Recent collections have included a revival of Van Gogh's great works, among others. This is a particularly enjoyable Omsk attraction on cold winter days, when temperatures can drop far below freezing and sunshine can be rare.

Shoot for the Moon

Worldwide Planetarium Database

Though Omsk is a relatively large city, the skies over it become dark enough in the evening for stargazing. While visitors are not permitted to use the expensive telescopes housed inside, exhibits inside the museum provide a fascinating look into the cosmos, narrated by expert astronomical guides.

Shop on Lenin Street

Lenin Street's name is appropriate: Although it's the high street of a city thousands of miles from Moscow, the European-style architecture and cosmopolitan vibe you feel as you stroll past its boutique and cafés evokes the capital of Russia more than its forlorn interior. Local specialties you can purchase here include rustic jams made from local berries (and even, in some shops, cedar cones), as well as handmade rugs from Kazakhstan, which sits just south of Omsk.

Sample Siberian Cuisine

Quynh Anh Nguyen/Getty Images

Speaking of unique Siberian food, it's not just preserves made from the fruits of evergreen trees. Omsk is a great place to discover the flavors of Russia's wild interior, whether you eat zagutai and stroganini (Siberia's take on sushi) or classic Russian plmeni dumplings filled with decidedly Siberian ingredients, such as bear and rabbit meat. Vkusno ! (That's Russian for "delicious"!)

Enjoy Historical Houses—While You Still Can

Simon Richmond/Getty Images

The wooden houses that line Nikolskiy Prospekt aren't protected, but they should be. Historical structures that are unfortunately in a state of disrepair, these houses are slated for demolition at some unspecific point in the future. Be sure to catch a glimpse of these historical house before they're gone. There will, however, be at least one left standing for a long time. The Omsk State Art Museum is in a traditional wooden house.

Go to the Circus

Vladislav Domnich/Getty Images

Omsk State Circus is a popular spot for local families, whose children love the opportunity to see acrobatic performances and animals that wouldn't otherwise make appearance in Siberia. If you do attend a show here, keep in mind that ethics with regard to animal treatment might not match up with those in North America or Western Europe, to say nothing of the smell that can pervade the auditorium during and even after a show.

Be a Drama Queen

While there's no guarantee that any shows will be playing at Omsk Drama Theater at the time of your trip, a visit to this 19th century building is a spectacle in and of itself. While not as huge, say, as Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, it's nonetheless an ornate architectural wonder that hearkens back to a glorious time in history. The interior of the theater is even open during the daytime; ask the person who's inside if any tours are available when you turn up.

Explore Cities Deeper in Siberia

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

Siberia starts in Omsk, even if you can't continue far into it. If you don't plan to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway, take one of two day trips from Omsk. Travel to Tobolsk, whose hilltop Kremlin is one of the most picturesque in all of Russia, and whose beauty inspired a photo by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev that ended up winning several awards. Or visit Tomsk, where you'll find a botanical garden dedicated to Siberian flora, and a museum that celebrates wooden architecture.

Ride the Trans-Siberian Railway

The idea of leaving Omsk behind can seem difficult, especially now that you've gotten to know this city in the heart of Siberia as well as you have. The mint-colored facade of Omsk Railway Station will make you smile, however, even if you're crying inside as you depart. Though it's not quite on the mid-line of the Trans-Siberian route between Moscow and Beijing , Omsk is a worthy starting place to begin a journey to either. If you head east make sure to stop in Irkutsk , the home of Lake Baikal and another underrated Siberian city.
