This set is especially good for Europe, because it includes Type C, E/F, and G adapters (more on this below), so you’re covered for any socket. Ceptics offers an even cheaper and smaller five-piece set, but we don’t recommend it. The adapters are flimsy, there’s no grounding, and the European plug's design doesn’t work well with the recessed sockets you will sometimes encounter.The drawback of plug adapters is that they’re easy to lose, but at least Ceptics includes a small bag for storage.

Extra Outlets

What I love about this sturdy, compact plug adapter is the lack of sliding pins or moving parts to worry about and that it stays put in the outlet. Offered in several versions (Type C, Type E/F, Type G), it enables you to charge up to six gadgets. I’ve been testing the Type G model in Scotland, and it plugs into a single outlet to give you three US outlets, a USB-C port, and two USB-A ports. The USB-C can put out up to 15 watts, and the USB-A ports are limited to 12 watts, not especially speedy but fine for overnight charging. The adapter is grounded and has various safety features.

On the downside, it can be tough to make use of all the outlets simultaneously as larger plugs, like the MacBook power adapter, tend to block one of the other US outlets. It does not offer surge protection, and the Type G adapter maxes out at 3,250 watts (250 volts, 13 amps), while the EU versions top out at 2,500 watts.

While the two AC outlets are handy, they are close together, so the shape and size of some plugs can make it tricky to use both. But with the ability to charge up to seven devices, this kit is handy. We also like the original Ceptics World Travel Adapter Kit ($35) , though it lacks the two USB-C ports.

With a familiar sliding pin design, this adapter also covers more than 200 countries. Taller and heavier than our top pick, this is OneAdaptr’s most powerful release to date, and it employs gallium nitride technology to deliver up to 100 watts. Aside from the universal AC outlet, you will find two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports on the bottom. Both USB-C ports offer 100-watt charging, and both USB-A ports are 18 watts, but 100 watts is the maximum in total, so when you plug in multiple devices, it divides between them.

Almost every charging standard you can think of is supported, including PD 3.0, QC 4+, FCP, SCP, AFC, PPS, and more, so there’s a good chance you can charge your phone at the fastest rate possible. There is no grounding, so don’t plug in any gadget with a third metal pin. But there is a 10-amp fuse with a spare included, and this adapter conforms to IEC 60884, CE, and FCC standards. With support for Power Delivery 3.1, the first two ports can supply up to 140 watts, and the bottom two ports can supply up to 45 watts, but the total maximum output if you use all four ports simultaneously is 145 watts.

We took this on a recent trip for a wedding, and it kept all of our gadgets topped off. The adapters are very easy to slide on with a quick-release switch, and it was a real space saver. The only downside is that the bulk and weight may prove awkward at some outlets.

For Wireless Charging

A few of the best wireless chargers can be good choices for travel. This modular system from RapidX is compact and capable of wirelessly charging two phones at up to 10 watts each, which makes it a good option for couples or families. The beauty is that you can add or remove pods, and a single charging cable can power up to five. They snap together magnetically and pull apart for easy packing. You can also get additional phone pods ($13) , and there’s a version with a phone pod and an Apple Watch pod ($30) .

You get a 30-watt US power adapter and a 5-foot USB-C cable in the box, so you will still want a travel adapter to pair with this system. If you plan to add pods, you will want a more powerful adapter. (RapidX recommends 65 watts or above for three or more devices.)

For Apple and Qi2 Devices

Incredibly compact when folded flat, Anker’s MagGo 3-in-1 can charge up your iPhone or Qi2-certified phone at up to 15 watts, has a second pad for AirPods or other wireless earbuds, and sports a fold-out Apple Watch charger. You get a USB-C cable (around 5 feet) and a wall adapter with it, but pair it with something like the Zendure or Satechi above that can provide at least 40 watts, and you can leave the wall adapter at home. Only MagSafe iPhones and Qi2-certified Android phones have the magnets needed to use this as a stand, but I had no trouble charging an older Android phone by folding it flat (Qi2 is backward compatible). There are many travel adapters out there. These are a few others we tested and liked but that missed out on a place above for one reason or another.

Ceptics 65W World Travel Adapter for $55 : This versatile adapter comes with Type A, B, C, E/F, G, and I slide-on plugs. They fit onto the rectangular brick and plug directly into the outlet, or you can attach them to the optional 5-foot cable. The brick has one grounded US outlet and a second non-grounded outlet, with one USB-A (30-watt) and two USB-C (65 and 33-watt) ports at the other end.

Masterplug Visitor to UK Travel Adaptor (3 Pack) for £12 : For visitors to the UK, this simple trio of adapters accepts European, American, Australian, and Asian plugs. They are single outlet adapters with 13-amp fuses inside, and they work perfectly. These are the adapters I use for long-term testing of devices from the US and elsewhere that lack UK plugs. If you forgot to buy an adapter before you arrived in the UK, you can find this affordable three-pack at any Argos.

Anker European Travel Plug Adapter for $16 : One of our favorite portable charger brands, Anker also makes travel adapters. This one plugs into most European outlets to give you a single grounded US outlet, a USB-A, and two USB-C ports. Unfortunately, the three USB ports max out at 15 watts total, so it’s best for overnight gadget charging, but I appreciate the temperature and overload protection. There is also a UK version ($16) .

Ceptics Travel Power Strip for $35 : Much like the World Travel Adapter Kit 2 above, this wee power strip offers two grounded US outlets, but it has only one USB-A and one USB-C port, and instead of plugging directly into the wall a cable attaches to an interchangeable plug head with Type A, B, C, E/F, G, and I adapters. The adapters can be stiff to change, but it works well otherwise.

International Plug Types and Universal Adapters

There are 15 plug types in use across the world. Type A and Type B are used in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Japan; Type C is common across Europe, South America, and Asia; Type E and Type F are found across Europe in places like Germany, Russia, and France; Type G is used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and a handful of other places; and Type I is used in Australia, New Zealand, China, and Argentina. Universal adapters tend to cover all of these types.

Some countries are not usually covered by universal adapters, such as India ( Type D ), Israel ( Type H ), and South Africa ( Type M or N ). You'll need to buy specific plug adapters for those places. To avoid any surprises when you land, double-check what type you need before you travel.

If you're visiting just one destination, a basic plug adapter that caters to one plug type is all you need. For trips to multiple destinations or for frequent flyers, a universal travel adapter can prove more versatile. The universal adapters we recommend here have the bonus of including multiple USB ports for charging several mobile devices from a single outlet.

A Word on Voltage Converters

Voltage converters are big, heavy, and expensive, and they don’t always work, so it’s probably best not to buy one. The reason you might think you need one is that the AC sockets on all of our recommended travel adapters do not convert the voltage coming from the socket. This means plugging into a UK socket will deliver 220 volts at 50 hertz, which is very different from the 120 volts at 60 hertz you can expect in the US. Don't worry! Your gear won't get fried. You just need to make sure anything you plug into one of these universal travel adapters has something like this printed on it:

Input: 100–220V 50/60Hz .

That should include most modern gadgets. If your device or charger can’t handle a variable voltage, it’s probably best to leave it at home. Most places provide hair dryers , irons, and kettles, so there’s no need to take them with you. It's often cheaper to buy a set with the correct plug at your destination and save the luggage space and hassle.

If you are absolutely determined to try a voltage converter (again, we recommend you don’t), the Ceptics 2000W Travel Voltage Converter ($70) seems to work well. It has a special 2,000-watt outlet for hair dryers, but only ones that work via a mechanical switch (anything with an electronic circuit board for automatic switch-off or temperature control won’t work and is at risk of being fried if plugged in). It also has two outlets that go up to 200 watts, one USB-C port, and three USB-A ports, though the ports do not support fast charging.

Everything Else You Need to Know

Here are a few additional tips and answers to help ensure your trip goes as planned.

Test everything before you go : Seriously, nothing is worse than thinking you’re being very clever by packing light and getting to your hotel to discover that your gadgets refuse to charge. Between the adapter, cable, and your device, plenty can go wrong, so do a quick test with everything you are taking before you set off.

Can travel adaptors go in a suitcase? Yes, you can pack travel adapters in your suitcase. But it may be wise to take a travel adapter in your hand luggage for easy access should you need to charge up a device when you arrive at your destination. Devices like power banks with lithium batteries inside must go in hand luggage, not checked bags.

Can I buy travel adapters at the airport? Yes, you almost certainly can, but like everything else at the airport, they will be far more expensive than they should be, and your choice will be limited.

Do hotels have travel adapters? Sometimes hotels have travel adapters, and some hotels even have outlets for other countries, but most do not, so don’t bank on it. You could always check with your hotel or accommodation before you depart, but it’s safer to snag a travel adapter to take with you.

Power strips create extra outlet space for your electronics, from USB to regular AC. Surge protectors increase the number of outlets while also defending against spikes in voltage caused by power outages or grid fluctuations. Some power strips might include surge protection, but not all do. Considering the relatively low cost of these accessories—they’re typically $30 or less—and how much you’d spend on a replacement device, they’re certainly a worthwhile investment.

Surge protection.

The proliferation of wireless handheld devices that charge at lower voltages makes surge protection more important than ever. What most people don’t realize about surge protectors is that they wear out over time. With every voltage fluctuation they absorb, their lifespan is shortened. So, to be sure you’re getting the most protection you can, it’s a good idea to replace them every two to three years.

Power surges can occur for a number of reasons. People tend to worry most about lightning strikes, which can find their way to electrical wires and cause power spikes in the millions of volts. Most surge protectors can’t handle anything this large, so don’t rely on them during lightning storms—the best way to protect from this type of surge is to unplug your sensitive electronic equipment. More commonly, power surges are caused during storms when power lines are downed. When the power company’s transformers and complex switching systems try to reroute power or address changing demands, it can create inconsistent power flow with dips and bursts. The other common cause for surges occurs within your own home. Air conditioners , compressors, and electric ranges require a large amount of power, particularly when they start up. However, the need drops off quickly once they’re running, which can cause surges elsewhere in the house’s wiring. The amount of protection surge protectors provide is measured in joules. A joule is a unit of energy required to do a certain amount of work. One joule is about the amount of electricity used to light a one-watt LED for one second. To adequately protect an average home entertainment system or computers and related equipment, look for surge protectors rated in thousands of joules. Always check with the manufacturer, as they usually provide examples on the packaging of what a certain model can protect.

Port and Outlet Selection

Using the surge protector as a power hub for your home office? The amount of ports and outlets readily accessible is important to consider. Since you’re probably plugging in multiple devices, like a desktop monitor and a laptop charger, a surge protector can prevent overloading your wall outlet while still providing ample energy and protection for your tech. Among the surge protectors here, the most outlets you’ll find are 12 (anything more feels like overkill). And the models may include up to four USB ports.

USB Options

While USB-A is the most commonly used USB type and likely the first that comes to mind, USB-C is becoming the standard because it has faster data transfer and charging speeds than USB-A. Plus, USB-C plugs are symmetrical, so they don’t have to be oriented one specific way to fit. This can alleviate some of that poking around you’ve probably had to do from time to time when trying to connect a USB-A cable. Many modern devices have the capability to connect via USB-C. Still, the adoption has been gradual, so it doesn’t hurt to consider a surge protector with a USB-A port or two just in case.

Connected Equipment Protection Policy

The CEW (Connected Equipment Warranty) varies by the brand, but it can give you assurance that you’ll be covered for devices that have been damaged while plugged into a surge protector or power strip. Many of the surge protectors we’ve included in this list offer coverage up to $300,000, but it’s important to check the policy for specific exclusions and other details.

How We Selected

We’ve tested several surge protectors on this list. We researched the market, surveyed user reviews, spoke with product managers and engineers, and used our own experience with them to determine the best options. We plugged surge protectors in and tested them in kitchens, family rooms, workshops, and offices. We evaluated them based on ease of use, features, and how they performed in various situations.

For any surge protectors that we haven’t gotten our hands on, we carefully selected them based on our knowledge and context from previous testing, as well as their designs, versatility, capabilities, and customer experiences.

APC Surge Protector

APC has a lot of confidence in this 11-outlet SurgeArrest, so much so that it offers a $250,000 connected equipment protection policy, and a lifetime warranty. Short of using it in a research lab to protect scientific instruments, we had a hard time coming up with a list of equipment to match that total. Multiple layers of protection guard against power surges, and there are LEDs to indicate protection status and building wiring faults.

The six outlets are spaced nicely to accommodate large power adaptors, and all of them have sliding covers to keep out dust and debris when you’re not using them. The heavy cord swivels 180 degrees so it lays flat and out of the way, no matter which way it sits behind furniture.

Because of the SurgeArrest’s size and features, we found it most useful for elaborate entertainment or computer equipment.

Amazon Basics 8-Outlet Surge Protector

The Amazon Basics Surge Protector isn’t super compact, but it is a standout for the 4,500 joules surge protection it provides.

There are eight outlets, three of which have additional space in between for bigger adapters. They all come with sliding colors for protection when not in use, and there is a green LED light that lets you know the surge protection is working and the wiring is grounded.

Our main complaint is the lack of USB-ports, but if you need a surge protector for powering multiple regular AC-outlet devices, this model gives you plenty.

Belkin 12-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip

Belkin has everything covered with this 12-outlet power strip, shielding against surges and spikes wherever they might come from.

The low-profile surge protector has six widely spaced outlets to accommodate large power adaptors, and a clip-on cable organizer to keep cords all heading in the same direction.

The slim design helps it fit under desks and behind furniture, so you can set it and forget it—although the protection and ground wiring status lights won’t be visible in this case. The surge protector also has sliding covers to keep dust out of unused outlets.

Belkin provides a $300,000 connected equipment warranty with this surge protector, too.

Bestek 8-Outlet 6-Foot Extension Cord Power Strip

Bestek’s 8-Outlet surge protector is ideal as an accessible, under-desk power solution. We found that eight outlets were more than enough for a fully outfitted, single work-station desk. Two of them are set apart from the others specifically for devices with large plugs. The other six are spaced more tightly, and we were able to use all of them with a range of standard plugs.

Four smart USB charging ports ensure each device is charged at the voltage and rate best suited for it, and they self-adjust the current when charging multiple devices simultaneously. The lighted on/off switch has an integrated circuit breaker for overload protection on all outlets to keep your gadgets safe from fluctuations in voltage or a sudden lightning strike.

The unit has a 15-amp circuit breaker, so you can even power some appliances with it—we plugged in an 8,000-BTU window air conditioner without issue.

Tessan Flat Plug Extension Cord Power Strip

Tessan’s Flat Plug Extension Cord is a compact option for when you only need a couple of extra outlets. Its size and shape make it easy to pack when traveling—we carried it in our laptop bag when working off-site.

Four standard outlets are spaced far apart, and they were efficient for fitting our devices without plugs overlapping. Three standard USB ports were enough to satisfy our charging needs and helped make this useful as a tabletop charging station.

You can also hang this Tessan flat on a wall or above a desk or nightstand if space is limited. We were surprised and impressed with the 3,940 joules of surge protection—that’s a lot for a surge protector this small and inexpensive.

One Beat 6-Outlet Surge Protector

The AC outlets on this surge protector from One Beat have ample space in between them to accommodate bulkier adaptors like laptop charging blocks. There are two outlets on the front panel and two on each side, which is convenient if you’re plugging in devices with cords that aren’t as flexible and need to lay flat. It’s space-saving and not very long, so it works well for desktops and workstations.

The surge protector auto-detects your connected devices for charging efficiency, and the lighted on/off switch has an integrated circuit breaker and automatically cuts power if the voltage gets overwhelming.

Anker PowerPort Cube Power Strip

The compact cube-shaped PowerPort from Anker is more of an extension cord with USB ports than it is a surge protector. Its tiny size doesn’t take up much space on a desk and keeps outlets within easy reach.

The PowerPort comes with an adhesive pad to keep it from moving around, wherever you decide to put it—it’s super sticky, so you can even tack it on a wall. We were able to do away with multiple AC adapters thanks to this Anker.

There are three AC outlets and three USB ports, so it powers all the personal electronic devices you need for work or play. Its compact size also makes it ideal for travel, and the cube can easily fits into a briefcase or laptop bag.

Similar to the Belkin and APC surge protectors, Anker has a connected equipment warranty, with coverage up to $200,000.

APC Rotating Surge Protector

APC’s six-outlet SurgeArrest is ideal for use near a desk or entertainment system. It has wall mounts on the back to hang it horizontally or vertically, but make sure it’s accessible, or the USB ports all the way at the end could be blocked. The main feature of this surge protector is how the six outlets swivel to provide ample room for large power adaptors or oversize plugs.

The power switch doubles as a circuit breaker reset, and when turned on, two LEDs indicate protection status and if the circuit is grounded properly. Finally, APC provides a $250,000 connected equipment protection policy.

Addtam Wall Charger Surge Protector

Addtam's wall charger surge protector allows you to get more usage from the standard outlets around your home while saving space and eliminating extra extension cords . It comes with two five AC outlets, along with three USB-A and one USB-C port for compatible devices.

Items plugged in benefit from the 1800-joule surge protection, which is surprisingly high for a wall adapter. There's an indicator light on the front to show when your devices are grounded and protected, too.

While this surge protector doesn’t offer as many outlets or charging ports as a traditional surge protector, it’s still a viable method for making the most of your standard home outlets if you don’t need to plug in that many devices.

Jacklyed Surge Protector Tower

This Jackyled is a convenient table-top power tower, and is most useful when placed in the center of a conference table in collaborative environments or meetings.

It has outlets on every panel, with two USB ports each on two of the sides. There’s a power switch for each tier of the tower, so you can be selective about which equipment you power off and which you leave on. The power cord for this unit retracts and winds into the base, so there’s no extra cable looped around to deal with. Plus, the handle on top makes for easy transport in between rooms.

We especially liked the Surge Protector Tower on our project table where tools and equipment frequently come and go and we have several things happening at once. A modest amount of surge protection guards sensitive electronics, although we wouldn’t suggest using this as a permanent power supply for these devices.

It also has power IQ technology that detects the type of device being charged and adjusts the voltage accordingly. Thus it offers high-speed charging of your devices as appropriate.

With a length of less than 2 ½ cubic inches, the Anker power strip is highly compact and portable. The power cable comes with a thick rubber coating that offers protection from fire and overloading. While this power strip makes an excellent travel companion, it is also great for everyday use around the house! (We have several!)

Whether you want to top up your phone battery in a Parisian café or need to charge seven devices from a single outlet, let their wisdom guide you to the adapter that most adeptly satisfies your travel needs.

A note: Unless explicitly mentioned here, it’s worth observing that typical travel adapters don’t convert power voltage, which can vary between countries. Though most smartphones and tablets are dual-voltage these days, you’ll want to double-check the specifications of your devices before leaving on your trip — especially if you’re bringing something like an electric shaver or a hair dryer.

“These are dirt cheap and fit in the palm of your hand,” says Going.com founder Scott Keyes of this low-cost, no-frills option fit for European (but not U.K.) travel. Small enough for even the tiniest, trickiest outlets, Keyes also lauds the flexibility that comes with this four-pack of adapters.

You both “don’t have to take turns charging your electronics” and don’t have to charge all of them in the same outlet, as you would with a bulkier (and pricier) all-in-one alternative. Plus, there’s something to be said for not letting a single missing adapter ruin your trip: “If I lose one, which, let’s be honest, happens not infrequently on the road, they’re cheap and easy to replace,” Keyes says.

For short trips that only involve a laptop and a phone, Arthur Wei, the well-traveled co-founder of Brooklyn Camper Vans , turns to this clever adapter. Truly living up to its “universal” billing, its ingenious design consists of interlocking pieces which snap into place to fit into European, British, Indian, Brazilian, and American outlets. Wei loves that Road Warrior’s adapter “packs light” and notes that its $12 price point means that your trip isn’t ruined if it goes missing.

Best travel adapters with built-in USB ports

I recently tested Epicka’s travel adapter on a two-week excursion around Portugal, and loved its ability to connect as many as six devices to power from a single outlet. It boasts three USB-C ports (plus two USB-A ports), all of which make it easy to charge smartphones, tablets, and other tech without even plugging a power block into the adapter itself.

If I have one complaint, it’s that it took a little extra finesse to fit it into the occasional oddly-angled European outlet. But double-checking that it’s plugged in properly is a small price to pay for this adapter’s charging capabilities. Overall, Epicka’s carry-on-friendly adapter offered solid value and performance, whether I needed to top up my camera battery or quickly charge my iPhone, iPad, and Nintendo Switch Lite while waiting for a transatlantic flight home.

When it comes to charging everything from her AirPods to her drone, Wendy Hu , photographer, creative director, and video host for Travel+Leisure, relies on this versatile option from Ceptics. Featuring two U.S. outlets, 2 USB-A slots ( another version features an additional two USB-C slots), and six interchangeable international adapters, Hu describes it as “sturdy and well-made” despite weighing in at just five ounces.

In addition to built-in surge protection to guard against voltage spikes and an attached micro USB cable (handy for charging smaller devices like Bluetooth headphones), it also offers quick-charging support for compatible devices — making it ideal for use in that brief window between daytime excursions and dinner plans, or during a brief pit stop in a café.

“For an adapter to work for me, it needs to be an all-in-one universal adapter with an AC outlet, USB-C, and USB-A outlets” says former Googler and current travel-content creator Catarina Mello , who recommends this one by Momax. “It also needs to have an overload dual fuse for safety and support for up to 2500 watts,” She says that’s a must in order to use devices like hair dryers, curlers, and steamers. “If your adapter can’t handle a larger surge current, it’ll get damaged or burn out.”

In addition to handling high-powered items, this universal adapter has space to power up to six devices from a single outlet across more than 150 countries. Three of those slots are quick charging USB-C ports, one of which pumps out 65 watts, delivering enough power to charge a laptop without bringing a separate adapter.

JOOMFEEN Worldwide All in One Universal Power Wall Charger

Matthew Kepnes, founder of Nomadic Matt and author of How to Travel the World on $50 a Day , is loyal to Joomfeen’s efficient universal adapter, which nestles input plugs for European, U.K., U.S., and Australian outlets into a single, streamlined adapter weighing just over three ounces. With two USB-A ports, it maxes out on charging three devices at a time, making it a little less versatile than other, more powerful options. But if you’re looking for an adapter that can get the job done without eating into your travel fund, this option is hard to beat.

Best travel adapters with multiple AC outlets

For travelers who prioritize power over portability (or those who need an adapter that can safely convert voltage), multiple experts recommend Bestek’s Universal Travel Adapter, including former NFL player and current travel creator Jeremy Cash , who loves its “all-in-one design.” With a three-AC-outlet power strip and four USB-A ports, it includes support for charging up to seven devices at once “no matter what country I’m in,” he says.

In addition to that plethora of charging ports, travel blogger and mom Kiersten Rich lauds its ability to convert voltage, which she says is “better for protecting expensive electronics” and “critical” for any hair tools you’re bringing along for the trip.

With a profile of 7.8-by-6.5 inches and a weight of one pound, it’s far from the most minimalist option, but the inclusion of a five-foot detachable power cable means that this adapter can transform a single hard-to-reach outlet into a convenient charging station. That’s why director, producer, and photographer Kathryn Sheldon has relied on it through years of overseas trips with cameras in tow. She says, “I don’t bring it if I’m trying to be super lightweight and carry-on only, but otherwise it’s an amazing tool.”

On a recent trip to Thailand, Pack Hacker editor Lauren Maternowski says her team loved the utility of this mighty adapter from Mogics, which can charge seven devices simultaneously thanks to a unique circular power strip ringing the outlet adapter. It also makes use of a retractable extension cable that she says makes it “handy if your accommodations are short on accessible plugs.”

Maternowski says that you can also remove the titular bagel and leave it behind if packing space is at a premium: “The adapter itself is one of the smallest we’ve seen, so it won’t take up much room in your bag.”

If you aren’t worried about converting voltage but still find that you’re “always charging a million things,” travel blogger Rich recommends this 110-volt option from Foval for use with European outlets. Similar to Bestek’s adapter, it offers three AC outlets, four USB-A ports, and an extension cord. But it has the added advantage of a USB-C port — not to mention a slimmer, lighter design that can plug directly into a wall socket while taking up about half as much space in your luggage.

Other Travel Adapters We Liked

Two adapters we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list but had standout features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Tessan Type G Adapter : This adapter with two AC outlets plus two USB ports works in countries such as Scotland, Ireland, the UK, Hong Kong, UAE, Singapore, and various African countries. However, we found the AC outlets are too close together on the adapter to always be useful.

Tessan Type E F Adapter : With five total ports (USB and AC) that work in numerous countries, this is a great adapter, but we think the two pack is a bit much, as one adapter already has five ports, meaning lots of travelers wouldn’t need a second adapter. This adapter is also wider than other adapters so it can take up more unnecessary space.

We noted what countries we were in while using the adapters or converters, and how easy it was to use each one. We also ranked them based on effectiveness, meaning how well they charged our devices, and value in terms of price versus performance.

Tips for Buying Adapters and Converters

Research your destination.

Before leaving on your trip, be sure to check out what types of outlets are used in the countries you’re visiting, and buy adapters and converters accordingly. The last thing you’ll want is to accidentally fry your travel steamer (or other device) while abroad and spend the rest of the trip sporting wrinkles. Some hotels provide USB ports inside hotel rooms, but it’s best to make sure they’re available before arriving empty-handed.

Consider a kit

If you’re visiting numerous countries and are in a rush, it’s sometimes easier to simply buy a kit with several adapters for multiple different destinations, which can save you money instead of buying numerous adapters. Lots of kits are small enough to tuck away in your bag or carry-on, so just be sure that you take along the ones you need.

Read the fine print

Always be sure to read the instructions that come with your adapter or converter, and be sure to pay attention to the power details. You may think a converter is safe for your styling tools or appliances when it's actually not, and you could fry your device, or blow a fuse, if the adapter doesn’t convert voltage.

An adapter is used when you need to plug a specific type of prong into a different socket. It allows you to plug your U.S.-style prong into an outlet in another country that uses a different type of plug. A converter is different in that it changes the voltage of an outlet to match the voltage of the item being plugged in. Some countries use 110/120 volts, while others use 220/240 volts. If you don’t use a converter, you could ruin your device, or even risk a fire.

If your destination has a different prong type than your outlets at home, then you’ll need an adapter. But if the voltage is different in the place you’re traveling than it is at home, you’ll need a converter to convert that voltage. Some products have dual voltage, which means the device can handle voltages from all over the world.

Most of Europe uses Type C plugs, which also fit into Type E, F, H, J, K, L, and N sockets that may replace Type C in places such as Denmark, Switzerland, and Italy. (England and the rest of the U.K. uses Type G.) Always double check exactly which one you’ll need before your departure.

Automatic shutoff: We preferred this feature because it ensures you’ll never leave your equipment unprotected. Otherwise, at minimum, we required each model to have an indicator light that signals when its surge-protection capabilities have worn out.
At least eight AC outlets: We required at least eight AC outlets for the main and top-of-the-line contenders, and at least three for our light-duty pick.
A surge-protection rating of 400 volts or better: Although we verified each model’s abilities in our own electrical testing, we required that they be rated by one of the major product-safety corporations, UL or ETL , to bring a surge down to (at most) 400 volts. Lower is better when it comes to let-through voltage , the measure of how much extra voltage reaches your electronics.
High joule rating: A joule rating tells you about how much energy the surge protector can absorb before it fails, so higher is better. But since this is just an estimate, we didn’t put a lot of stock in it.
Convenient auxiliary ports: We preferred models with coaxial connectors , which are commonly used in AV devices, as well as telephone ports for a landline phone or dial-up internet connection. USB ports are handy for charging a phone or other small device without a wall charger , but since most won’t charge a phone at top speed, we don’t think they add much value.
At least a one-year warranty: This is a bare-minimum requirement for something that you’re trusting to protect high-priced equipment and that you’ll be replacing every few years. However, a warranty covers only defects and won’t help you when the surge-absorbing components wear out as designed.
Long power cord: If a surge protector has a power cord, longer is better because it’ll be safer and more convenient to use.
Sensible port layout and overall design: To keep oversize plugs from blocking nearby outlets, we looked for adequately spaced ports. Attractive, slim design was a plus, and we considered well-designed clamps, hooks, or holes for mounting the surge protector on a table or baseboard to be a bonus.

In the US, wall outlets nominally provide electricity at 120 volts, but most electronic devices can handle more, allowing them to operate on the 240-volt standard used internationally. In our testing, we zapped each model with a ridiculously powerful 5,000-volt surge and measured how much power slipped through. This told us how many volts would be able to reach and potentially damage your devices at home.

Most household power surges don’t come close to 5,000 volts, but some are tens of thousands of volts . The major exception would be direct lightning strikes, but considering that a single lightning bolt carries upwards of 1 billion volts , no surge protector will save your TV from one of those.

We’ve tested dozens of surge protectors, and we are confident that the Tripp Lite Protect It 12-Outlet Surge Protector TLP1208SAT is the best one to use with typical living room or office equipment because it has all the safety features you need, plenty of outlets, stellar surge-protection performance, and noticeably nicer build quality than we’ve seen on other units we’ve tested.

It shuts down when it can no longer protect your gear. The Tripp Lite TLP1208SAT has an auto-shutoff feature that powers down the unit permanently when it has worn out and is no longer able to block power surges. In other words, if it’s still providing power, it still has some protection left.

It has other useful indicators, too. In addition to its auto-shutoff function, the unit has two little status LEDs: one that tells you when surge protection is functioning and another that lets you know if you have a short circuit, a blown fuse, or a wiring problem that requires intervention from an electrician.

It can suppress some big, big surges. When we sent 5,000-volt surges of electricity through this model, it suppressed as much as any surge protector we tested (with the exception of the much more expensive series-mode or hybrid options like our upgrade pick ).

In our tests, it averaged a let-through voltage (the remaining amount of the surge that passes through to your devices) of 182.8 volts, well below UL’s 400-volt rating.

There are lots of ports for your collection of electronics. This model’s 12 AC outlets should be more than sufficient for most people’s needs. Surge protectors with more than 12 outlets exist , but they tend to be bulky and/or lack peripheral ports like USB, telephone, and coaxial connectors.

In addition to its outlets, the Tripp Lite TLP1208SAT has two coaxial connectors and three telephone ports. Like with AC outlets, power runs through these ports, so they can be affected by lightning and other types of surges; for example, a spike in power through incorrectly grounded cable lines (which are not uncommon) can destroy an unprotected cable box.

It’s not beautiful but it’s not ugly, and it has a long cord. The unit’s exterior matches its solid performance with a sturdy, utilitarian shell. Unlike run-of-the-mill power strips, its veneer seems built to stand up to most minor scratches and scuffs.

It’s compact enough to slide under a bed or an entertainment center, and a set of holes on the back gives you the option to mount it on a baseboard.

Its thick, rubberized cord is 8 feet long, making it convenient to run underneath bookshelves and couches. And unlike our other picks, it has a 90-degree plug that’s ideal for tight spaces.

The warranty is better than average. Tripp Lite offers a limited lifetime warranty that protects against any defects or failures for the life of the product—but be warned that it’s not considered a defect for the surge protection to eventually wear out as designed. (And bear in mind that “lifetime warranties” usually aren’t .)

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Our primary concern with this model is that the outlets could use a bit more room to breathe. It has four well-spaced outlets for large power bricks, but the single row of eight outlets quickly gets overcrowded, especially with bulky plugs.
It also lacks USB ports, so you’ll need to use a separate wall charger to charge a phone and other USB-powered devices.

If you want something that offers solid protection in a small package—say, to power a few appliances and a couple of smartphones on your kitchen counter—get the Tripp Lite Protect It 3-Outlet Surge Protector SK30USB .

It’s as compact as many travel-sized power strips, but offers way more protection. In our guide to small power strips for travel , we recommend a variety of models that are well suited to stowing in a backpack or suitcase to bring on a trip. But whereas most of those power strips offer only low-level protection against power surges, in our testing the SK30USB proved almost as protective as larger contenders.

It’s easy to tell if the protection is working. This surge protector is one of just a few compact models we’ve found with an auto-shutoff feature. Plus, rather than the tiny LED you get on most units, this one has a clearly visible strip of plastic on top that lights up to signal that its protection is working. (On the downside, this light might be annoying in a bedroom while you’re trying to sleep.)

It beat its own protection ratings. In our testing, the SK30USB’s let-through voltage (291.8 volts) was well under its 330-volt UL rating and our target range of less than 400 volts. Although its expected lifespan is shorter than that of the rest of our picks—it’s rated for 540 joules, versus ratings in the thousands for our other picks—it comes with a lifetime warranty, which is impressive for such an inexpensive device.

It protects USB-powered devices, too. In addition to three AC ports on its front-facing side, the SK30USB has two 2.1-amp USB ports. It lacks telephone ports and coaxial connectors, but those are rarely used outside of a media center or home office anyway.

It has a modern look and a slim design. The SK30USB is made of glossy plastic and has a sleek, streamlined design. Even though it juts out about an inch, its curved edges allow it to hug the wall fairly seamlessly.

It fits snugly into a wall outlet. The SK30USB has a three-prong plug, as well as a plastic rod that fits into the bottom hole of the second outlet, ensuring a snug connection. If you’re using it at home, it also has a screw that you can insert directly into the wall (replacing the screw in the middle of your wall outlet plate) for an even sturdier fit.

Being compact has its downsides. The AC and USB ports are pretty tightly spaced, but that’s to be expected on such a small unit.

It’s overkill for most people, but the Furman Power Station 8 (PST-8) offers the strongest surge protection of the dozens of models we’ve tested, besting even high-end series-mode surge protectors that cost hundreds more.

It’s ideal for people who have very expensive electronics to protect. Even though our tests showed that common equipment like computer displays can survive surges when protected by our less-expensive picks, spending more for added protection may be worthwhile in some cases—say, if your home theater, recording studio, or office workstation budget is in the five figures.

It blocks virtually all excess voltage. In our testing, the PST-8 repeatedly allowed just 40 volts of a 5,000-volt surge to pass through to its eight outlets.

Instead of relying on standard metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) to absorb the entire surge, Furman adds extra protection: Once a surge goes over 137 volts, the entire unit shuts down to protect itself and any connected equipment (switching the unit on and off resets it).

Any surge that gets through before the shutdown passes through a series of capacitors as well as a large inductor meant to filter the extra power. The large MOV, similar to those found in less-expensive units, sacrifices only part of itself as a last resort after the filtering stage.

This is why you won’t find a joule rating listed for the PST-8, according to Furman—other surge protectors rely solely on MOVs to absorb energy, so it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison.

It’s exceptionally reliable. The company also claims that the PST-8’s circuit design has led to a repair-replacement rate below 0.005% since it was introduced. In other words, for every 100,000 customers, only five have needed to repair or replace their units. Furman says that in all instances, the damage was physical breakage (dents, cracks, or parts snapping off) rather than an internal failure.

Given how effective the setup was at swallowing our test surges, we have every reason to believe that the PST-8 will provide more protection for longer than standard surge protectors in the under-$50 price range.

It’s not cheap, and its warranty could be longer. The PST-8’s improved protection comes at a cost, and not just in terms of price.

With only eight AC outlets in total—plus two telephone ports and two coaxial connectors—the PST-8 could leave you short when you’re trying to power a lot of electronics. Its layout leaves something to be desired, too, with just two AC outlets properly spaced to accommodate large plugs.

Lastly, its three-year warranty ( no registration needed , but valid only if you buy from an authorized seller ) is one of the shortest we’ve seen, which is disappointing, since we expect its surge-protection capabilities to last much longer than those of less-expensive models.

But it’s still cheaper than series-mode surge eliminators, making it a great value for the right person. If you have pricier-than-average gear, these trade-offs make sense. Although the PST-8 isn’t quite as convenient, it will provide more protection than our other picks. And it’s sturdily built overall, with an aluminum body and a long, 8-foot cord.

Whether your surge protectors are old or new, here are a few basic guidelines to help you ensure that they remain effective:

Never daisy-chain multiple surge protectors to add outlets, and never plug a surge protector into an extension cord. This is an easy way to exceed the current ratings on the surge protector and even the wiring in your walls. The best-case scenario is that you trip a breaker or blow a fuse. The worst-case scenario is that something starts melting—that’s the opening act for an electrical fire.
Never use an adapter to plug a surge protector into an ungrounded outlet. Bypassing the ground negates most of the benefits of using surge protectors, since typically two-thirds of their MOVs are tied to the ground leg.
Use grounded (three-prong) or polarized (one blade thicker than the other) plugs whenever possible. This decreases the risk of electric shock, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission .
When you first plug in a surge protector, make sure the status lights don’t report any problems. Most protectors have a single grounding light that indicates whether there’s a ground fault. If there is a fault, call an electrician as soon as possible to determine whether you have a wiring problem. A ground fault could fry your devices, electrocute someone, or start a fire.
Always replace your surge protectors after any large event, such as a lightning strike down the block or multiple outages in rapid succession. And if you’re plugging in new gear, check each outlet for burn marks or any sign of damage.
Every three to five years, replace surge protectors that lack an auto-shutoff feature. Otherwise, they’ll keep passing power to your devices long after their protective MOVs have worn out. If you have a power strip without any surge protection (or one that’s so old you can’t remember if it ever did), get rid of it.
Don’t plug a space heater into a surge protector. Space heaters and other appliances with an open heating element (such as toasters or hair dryers) use a lot of power, increasing your chances of overloading the outlet. A surge protector adds even more resistance that can allow heat to build up, potentially catching fire or damaging the device. To be on the safe side, plug any open-heat electronics straight into the wall.
Never cover up any part of a surge protector or extension cord with rugs, poufs, or other decorative items. This type of direct contact prevents heat from escaping , which could start a fire.

If you want our top pick but it’s unavailable: Get the Tripp Lite TLP1208TELTV . It used to be our top pick, and it’s identical to the TLP1208SAT model in nearly every way—except that it had very slightly worse performance in our surge tests.

If you want our top pick but don’t need coaxial connectors, and you’d like to save a few bucks: Get the Tripp Lite TLP1208TEL . Like the TLP1208SAT model, this model performed well in our surge tests, it’s UL listed, and it has auto-shutoff capabilities, a surge-protection indicator light, a ground/fault indicator light, 12 well-spaced outlets, an 8-foot cord, three telephone ports, a lifetime warranty, and a great joule rating. Plus, it’s cheaper. However, it lacks coaxial connectors.

If you want a surge protector with USB ports, an energy-saving feature, and a lower up-front cost than our top pick , and you don’t need telephone ports or coaxial connectors: Get the TrickleStar TS1205 . These surge protectors are built for heavy-duty use—like our upgrade pick , they’re encased in a fire-resistant metal shell—and both models performed spectacularly in our surge tests, blocking all but about 200 of the 5,000 volts. Plus, they each have an ample 12-foot cord. However, they’re much bulkier than our TLP1208SAT pick, they have fewer outlets (six and eight, respectively), they lack telephone ports and coaxial connectors, and they cost significantly more at this writing.

If you want a surge protector with USB ports and a clamp mount, you don’t need auxiliary connectors, and you don’t mind that it has a shorter cord and fewer outlets than our top pick does: Get the Tripp-Lite Protect It TLP606DMUSB . This six-outlet surge protector performed well in our surge tests, but it’s really useful only for a desk or workbench—the built-in clamp lets you easily attach it to a table, but it doesn’t have a wall mount, and it’s impractical to set on the ground. The 12-outlet Anker 351 Power Strip performed dreadfully in our testing, offering no surge protection whatsoever.

The 12-outlet APC Performance SurgeArrest P12U2 has an auto-shutoff feature that kicks in only when the main (L-N) leg wears out. This means that if either of its other two legs (L-G or N-G) breaks down first, it will continue to send power to your devices, which could be unsafe.

Like our top pick , the 12-outlet Belkin BE112234-10 performed well in our surge tests and is UL listed. It also has surge-protection and ground/fault indicator lights, three telephone ports, two coaxial connectors, a long cord, a lifetime warranty, and a great joule rating. However, it lacks auto-shutoff capabilities, so you have to check the indicator lights regularly to know when the surge-protection components are worn out.

The 12-outlet Belkin SRA007p12tt6 has as many outlets as our top pick, and it also adds USB ports (two USB-A and one USB-C), has a higher joule rating (3,480 joules), and costs a bit less ($40 at this writing). However, it performed worse in our surge tests, it isn’t UL listed, it forgoes an auto-shutoff mechanism, and it lacks telephone and coaxial connectors.

Although the 12-outlet CyberPower P1004UC has as many outlets as our top pick and adds a USB-A port and USB-C port, we dismissed it because it shut down permanently after being zapped with 1,800 volts in our surge tests.

The 12-outlet Tripp Lite Protect It TLP128TTUSBB failed to measure up to our top pick during testing, letting more than twice as many volts slip through.

The 10-outlet Tripp Lite Protect It TLP1008TEL has many of the same key features as our top pick, but it has two fewer outlets and let through more volts in our surge tests.

We tested the eight-outlet Elac Protek PB-82S , eight-outlet Furman PST-2+6 , and 10-outlet Tripp Lite Isobar HT10DBS against our upgrade pick , but they don’t offer the same combination of surge protection, cord length, and rugged build as that model.

The seven-outlet Tripp Lite SUPER725B performed well in our surge tests. It’s also UL-listed, and it has an auto-shutoff feature, surge-protection and ground/fault indicator lights, a 25-foot cord, a lifetime warranty, and a great joule rating. However, it isn’t as compact as other contenders with fewer than eight outlets, and it has an awkward shape that doesn’t allow it to sit flat on the floor.

The six-outlet Amazon Basics SMD607 , Belkin BP106000 , and Belkin BSV602tt have twice as many outlets as our wall-mounted pick , and like that model they have two USB-A ports and can be safely mounted to a wall with screws. However, they all suffer from being less compact or having fewer safety certifications than that model.

We tested the cheapest surge protector we could find at a local Walmart, the six-outlet Hyper Tough PS682B_B , to see how it would fare against our top contenders, and it failed spectacularly in pretty much every way.

The six-outlet Tripp-Lite TLP66USBR has four USB ports—most other models have two at most—but we found that it offered less-than-stellar surge protection. Plus, its extendable USB-hub feature is hard to maneuver and not that useful.

The six-outlet Utilitech 78613 has a bulky, unappealing shape and a flimsier build quality than otherwise comparable models.

The nearly identical three-outlet CyberPower CSP300WUR1 and CyberPower P300WURC2 performed relatively well in our surge tests, blocking all but 282 and 226.8 volts, respectively, of the thousands we threw at them. However, they have a bit more bulk than our wall-mounted pick , and a shorter, one-year warranty.

And of all the units we tested, it was the sturdiest of the bunch, with a flat and wide base.

In terms of design, there’s plenty of room to plug on oddly-shaped power pricks. And the cord feels solid.

The Monoprice 12 also has lights that indicate if surge protection is working, and if protection fails following a major surge, the light will shut off. The device will auto-shut to prevent damage to electronics. It’s also UL Listed.

The reason why the Monoprice 12 doesn’t rank higher on our list is due to subpar warranty and no equipment protection. The one-year warranty, while not bad, falls below the competition. This could be excused if the Monoprice 12 was a value leader. Unfortunately, as of publishing, it sells for around $28, which is more than the Anker PowerPort Strip 12.

What to look for when buying a surge protector

The way most surge protectors work is by using Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), which reroute energy back to the electrical source. Think of it as an automated levee or dam that can push a massive surge of water back towards a river to help keep your home safe. While MOVs are an efficient and cost-effective way for manufacturers to design surge protectors, they're not an absolute fail-safe. Every time there's a major surge, the MOVs degrade and are sacrificed to ensure your electronics stay protected. That means surge protectors don't last forever.

Also, a high current surge is what can really damage electronics. Some surges may have a higher current than voltage, meaning the voltage threshold might not be met to trip the MOV. Other "non-sacrificial" methods do exist, such as from Zero Surge . But a simple two-outlet Zero Surge model costs more than $200, exceeding every item on this list by a wide margin. But if your budget allows for it, then Zero Surge might be the way to go.

Most quality surge protectors and power strips have a built-in kill switch which will make the surge protector inoperable if it can’t provide protection any longer. Others might continue to work without protection. gsconn I purchased the Belkin 4 socket surge strip in April 2022. The surge strip failed to protect my laptop during a voltage spike. Belkin advertise £20,000 connected equipment warranty. I submitted a claim on in March 2024 to Belkin, and also returned the extension lead for diagnosis. Despite multiple emails and phone calls, Belkin do not process your claim. The support desk are unhelpful and unable to assist. Two months later and my claim has still not been processed. The surge protector failed to work and the connected equipment warranty is worthless.
