Travel Tips for New York City

If you’ve never visited the Big Apple before, here are a few trips for traveling to the city that should help make your trip as hitch-free as possible. Take these into consideration as you’re planning your trip.

Arrive at least a day ahead of schedule. New York City is busy, and it’s hectic. If you only allow yourself a buffer of a few hours before your ship leaves, there’s a really good chance that you are going to miss your cruise. But, arriving a day before gives you a buffer for traffic delays and allows you time to explore the city a little bit.

Don’t drive in the city. Unless you really have to, driving in the city is not recommended, especially if you’ve never been to NYC before. Take advantage of the many forms of public transportation available, or invest in good walking shoes and walk around the city. Driving will only leave you more frustrated and stressed, which is not want you want just before your cruise vacation.

Uber is cheaper than taxicabs. Although flagging down a taxi from the side of the street in Manhattan is an iconic image, it is also an expensive one. If you need a ride around the city, your best option will be to get a ride from an Uber or Lyft driver.

New York City has a lot going for it when it comes to visiting for your cruise. It’s filled with fun, history, and a nightlife that never ends. They say that NYC is the city that never sleeps, and it is very true.

The list of ideal hotels to stay in before leaving on your cruise out of the Manhattan Cruise Terminal should ease some of the decision making for your trip. Decide what you want in a hotel as far as amenities and price is concerned, and go from there.

Remember, if you are looking for something that will allow you to park on hotel property during your cruise, or you need something that provides a shuttle to the pier, you won’t find it in the heart of Manhattan. The closest hotels that offer those types of services are in New Jersey, and we’ve listed some of the best.

The best feature that the Manhattan hotels have to offer is their proximity to the terminal. Some as little as half a mile, which makes getting to the port on cruise day a breeze.

Where to Stay ?

A large number of hotels are located within short distance of the terminal, either within walking distance or a short Uber/Lyft or taxi ride away. You can also opt to stay in lower Manhattan as there’s a ferry from Pier 11 that runs from lower Manhattan to the pier adjacent to the Brooklyn cruise terminal. When visiting New York City before or after your cruise, midtown and downtown Manhattan hotels are less than 30 minutes away. By Public Transit to the Terminal

The Red Hook neighborhood is not well served by public transportation. Travelling by metro, bus and all other options to travel to the cruise terminal require changing to a bus and walking 4+ blocks. We would suggest not to use public transit to get to the cruise terminal.

The best option is to take a cab, charter bus or limo/sedan.

New York is unlike any other city in the world. From the quiet in Central Park to the bustle of Times Square, the Big Apple is full of iconic architectural landmarks, amazing views, museums and cultural venues.

Brooklyn is connected with Manhattan by 3 bridges: Williamsburg, Manhattan and the world famous Brooklyn Bridge.

In Brooklyn visit the Brooklyn Museum, one of the largest art museums in the United States. Nearby Brooklyn Bridge Park offers really fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline.

Far beyond the bridge are the upper floors of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. A must see is the Green Wood Cemetery. Tour guides will provide stories of the famous people buried here.

Historic Heights Promenade is a wonderful spot to stroll, sit and watch people and boats going along the water. In the distance is the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the first stop in the past of so many immigrants. A fun thing to do is to walk the Brooklyn Bridge at night and see the lights of Manhattan.

Looking for a hotel that offers a shuttle and parking for a cruise mid September. We would need it for a one night stay and looking for safe and clean, we don’t need fancy. The one I had heard of is sold out.

None that I know of that offer a shuttle to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Certainly none in Manhattan proper but I don't believe any in New Jersey either. There are hotels that offer a park and cruise package in NJ but not a shuttle.

njhorseman

The only possibilities will be in New Jersey.

At one time two hotels in Ridgefield Park, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton Inn offered packages that included transportation to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal . Check them out to see if they still do.

Also Trinityreservations.com has usually offered some hotels that have packages including transportation to Manhattan Cruise Terminal.  Check their website.

Thanks for your info! I called the Hampton inn and it is $309 plus taxes for one night and up to 10 nights parking as well as the shuttle to and from the port. Thanks again!

Thanks

Hi. I myself am looking for one- I have found two- Both pretty pricey-

Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott North Bergen- The offer a sleep, park, cruise package- includes a shuttle. For our Oct 2023 date is was $500 for the night.

There also is Hampton in the Ridgefield, NJ that offers the same kind of package,  a little cheaper that the Fairfield at about $400. These are the only two I can find so far.

More than we want to spend as we are only about a 2 hour drive from Manhattan in PA. Right now planning to just park at the cruise terminal. Hope this helps.

I knew there was (or used to be) a hotel/cruise package in North Bergen but could not recall which hotel, thanks. At the prices quoted and your close proximity to the port, I would not use the package either. If you are looking for less expensive parking option NY Waterways has a parking garage & ferry terminal in Weehawken, NJ. Add the expense of the ferry & transportation from the NY ferry dock to/from MCT.

Parking at  the Manhattan cruise terminal is 45 per night, so if it's a 7 day cruise, that's 315.  Plus you can add in the Lincoln Tunnel toll at 13.75.  So if you can get the Stay, park and shuttle for around 350 at the hampton Inn, it's worth it for the extra 20 bucks.

Please see ny response to your post on the other thread. To summarize it, you're ignoring the additional time that using a shuttle NJ back to a NJ hotel will take, and if money is the biggest consideration it would be much cheaper to park at Port Imperial in Weehawken and take the ferry to Manhattan.

I can’t agree more, why would one park at a hotel they don’t need to stay at just to pay a bit more and have to travel back to the hotel before getting on the road to go home? Heck we drive the 25 minutes to the port from NJ and pay to park, we could save money parking at the ferry, but would rather spend more to be able to walk to our vehicle from the ship with no waiting involved.

This Iconic New York Hotel Just Launched Sunset Cruises — With Unbeatable Views of the Statue of Liberty

Aman New York's new experience offers guests stunning views and chef-curated snacks along the Hudson River.

cruise park and stay new york

Lydia Price/Travel + Leisure

Beloved hotel brand Aman sits at the pinnacle of luxury and hospitality, so it’s no surprise its New York outpost’s latest offering gives members and guests unsurpassed access to the city’s iconic skyline.

Aman New York recently introduced " Adventures on the Water ," a multi-hour cruise that allows visitors to experience the city from breathtaking vantage points along the Hudson River. Travel + Leisure boarded a sleek $2.95 million Daychaser yacht from the Barton & Gray Mariners Club fleet for one of its inaugural voyages in collaboration with Aman.

And, in true Aman fashion, every detail of the experience has been refined to luxurious perfection.

Aman’s masterful food and beverage team designs a menu for each voyage. After taking off from Chelsea Piers, we sipped on negronis, vespers, and margaritas served with care from the pilothouse bar. Bites were expertly tailored for our midsummer excursion — think ceviche tartlets, beef tartare, and a mouthwatering scallion dip that puts other chip accouterments to shame.

Lydia Price/Travel + Leisure

I munched crudité while relaxing on the aft deck’s plush chaise lounges as our journey. As we headed north, an American flag set against the boat’s churning wake made for a classic nautical photo op that I couldn’t resist.

After the craft soared past the George Washington Bridge, the riverside was lined with lush green forests that seemed worlds away from the bustle of Manhattan. Then we looped back to head downtown, and I moved to the bow’s cushy crescent sofa, where I feasted on heaps of caviar served atop the chef’s take on ice cream.

Cruising along the southern tip of Manhattan, we were treated to stunning views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, Governors Island, and the outer borough’s waterside parks. However, the Statue of Liberty was the star of the show.

Up close and personal with Lady Liberty — and with no buildings blocking the expansive sky — it was undoubtedly the most beautiful sunset I've seen in my nearly 10 years of living in New York City. She stood proud against a blazing sky of pink, yellow, and orange as the sun retreated under the horizon by her side.

As we made our way back to the pier, the skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan looked bubblegum pink and daisy yellow in the sky's reflection. The moon had also taken its cue, shining spectacularly just to the side of One World Trade Center.

Aman New York members and guests can book Adventures on the Water at aman.com . The yachts can accommodate up to 12 passengers at a time, depending on the food and beverage services requested by guests.

Park & Cruise Hotels for Every Major Port in America

Planning to drive to the port for you cruise? If so, then you’ll have to decide where you will park your car for the trip. Every cruise port has parking that’s operated by the port itself. In addition, many ports have nearby independent parking that’s usually cheaper, but not as convenient.

A park and cruise hotel in Florida

No matter where you decide to park, however, it’s going to cost you. It’s common for major ports to charge around $20-$25 per day. For a week-long cruise that means you’re hundreds just to park your car — before you have even stepped foot on the ship.

But there’s good news…

In an effort to cater to cruise passengers coming into town, many hotels in port cities offer a valuable perk to their guests — free (or discounted) cruise parking. These park and cruise packages can save you a ton of money.

Here’s how these “Park & Cruise” hotels work: Just stay a night before your cruise and the hotel will let you park for free or for a discount. Sometimes they also offer transportation to and from the port. If the hotel has a parking package (instead of just allowing you to leave your car), you’ll want to book that rate. It’s best to give the hotel a call just to confirm everything as they do change their policies from time to time.

To help you out, we’ve rounded up the listings of hotels with cruise parking for every major port below. Simply click the link to be taken to that specific city.

While you would never confuse cruising from Baltimore with sailing from Miami, the city does have some popular routes perfect for those living in the mid-Atlantic. As well, the city offers several park and cruise hotels perfect for those coming into town before their cruise. See Baltimore’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

Cape Liberty

The port in New Jersey continues to grow, and with that, the options for cruise passengers. Currently many hotels near the cruise port offer park and cruise deals. See Cape Liberty’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

Charleston is a tourist mecca, and its cruise industry is growing fast. With a ton of hotels in town for tourists, there is plenty of competition for your dollars. That makes the port a prime spot to find good deals on parking for your cruise.  See Charleston’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

Fort Lauderdale

South Florida is the world’s epicenter of cruising. It attracts literally millions of passengers each year and is busier than any other region on earth with it comes to the number of passengers. The good news is that there are plenty of hotels in the area that love to cater to passengers with free or discounted parking.  See Fort Lauderdale’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

Less than two decades ago there were no cruises from Galveston. Today it’s the busiest port outside of Florida. If you’re headed to the island to sail away, inquire at one of the more than 20 hotels offering cruise parking packages. Many also have transportation to the port.  See Galveston’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

Los Angeles/Long Beach

Between them, Los Angeles and Long Beach offer plenty of sailings. And they also offer plenty of options for cruise parking packages. You can take your pick to find the deal that offers you the best value to park your car and avoid paying at the port.  See Los Angeles’ Park & Cruise hotels here .

Miami is the undisputed busiest cruise port in the United States. The bad news is that it’s one of the most expensive cities to park. The good news is that a number of hotels in the region will offer you to park your car if you stay with them for a single night.  See Miami’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

Mobile is one of the youngest ports in the nation when it comes to cruising, and hotels are eager to cater to the fledgling cruise industry. All over the region you’ll find affordable places to stay that will up cruise parking as a perk.  See Mobile’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

New Orleans

Who wouldn’t want to stay an extra night or two in New Orleans before their cruise? If you need a hotel, select one that has a parking package. That way you don’t have to pay the expensive fees to park at the port. See New Orleans’ Park & Cruise hotels here .

Port Canaveral

With Port Canaveral’s location about 45 minutes from Orlando, many people choose to drive to the port to take their cruise. Meanwhile, cruise parking at the port costs a minimum of $18 per day, making it worthwhile to look for a parking package. See Port Canaveral’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

As one of the most beautiful cities in America, San Diego is a destination in of itself — even without taking a cruise from there. It makes sense that many people would want to extend their trip and stay a day or two in town before their cruise. If that’s what you plan to do, try one of the hotels with cruise parking to save some cash.  See San Diego’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

If you are going on an Alaskan cruise, then Seattle is your port. It’s an expensive place to park your car during your trip, so if you plan on getting a hotel then you should definitely book one with cruise parking. Luckily, you have a number of options.  See Seattle’s Park & Cruise hotels here .

Tampa is the lone cruise port on Florida’s west coast, but is the perfect jumping off point for trips to the Caribbean. As well, it offers a number of cruises and cruise lines, without the business of cruising from more popular ports like Miami. There are also a number of cruise hotels with parking for you to choose from.  See Tampa’s Park & Cruise hotels here .
