The Giving Center wants our generous donors to know that making your collectible donation to charity not only helps to meet the needs of those less fortunate in our communities, but you also may be eligible to claim the maximum allowed tax deduction for your charitable contribution. The proceeds from your generous donation to The Giving Center benefits families, individuals, and other contributing organizations throughout the community with multiple assistance needs as well as other charitable causes nationwide.

A few facts to Know Before Donating Collectibles to The Giving Center: As a collector, donating from your collection instead of your bank account or your investment portfolio is ultimately most tax beneficial. When you donate appreciated property to The Giving Center rather than selling it, you avoid capital gains tax that you'd otherwise incur on a sale. Also, the long-term gains on collectibles are subject to a higher maximum rate of (28%) than long-term gains on most long-term property at 15% or 20%, depending on your particular tax bracket — so you can save even more taxes by donating your collectibles to The Giving Center.

Giving Center accepts collectibles anywhere within the United States

Also, proper substantiation of the donation is critical, and this may include providing an appraisal of your item(s). If you donate collectible items with a collective value of $5,000 or more, you'll need a qualified appraisal, and if the collective value is $20,000 or above, a copy of the qualified appraisal must be attached to your tax return. If an individual item is valued at $20,000 or more, you may also be required to provide a photograph of the donated collectible item with your tax return.

What type of collectibles can I donate?

Simply put, you can donate anything that has value. Giving Center accepts all types of collectibles as a charity donation! You can donate collectibles from almost any category imaginable. Donation Sites

Proper appraisals.

Please have your collectible items properly appraised. With respect to donation of valuable collectibles over $5,000, getting an appraisal from a qualified appraiser is an important step in the charitable donation process. You may or may not be required to attach the appraisal to your tax return (appraisal fees exceeding 2 percent of your adjusted gross income (AGI) are tax deductible). The appraisal of your item(s) must be made no earlier than 60 days before the date you'll be donating the property. Additionally, you must receive the appraisal before the due date (including any extensions) of the tax return on which you first claim a deduction for the donated property to charity.

If your non-cash charity contribution is over $500, you must attach the IRS Form 8283 to your tax return. If your artwork or collectible is worth more than $5,000, you are not required to attach the appraisal to your tax return (keep it for your own records). If you deduct $500,000 or more for a donated item or group of similar items, you'll need to attach the qualified appraisal to your tax return. Special filing requirements for art donations include attaching a copy of the signed appraisal to the IRS Form 8283 if your total deduction is $20,000 or more. In addition, a photograph of the donated item(s) may be required for individual objects valued at $20,000 or more.

• Remember you can deduct contributions to charity only if you itemize deductions on Schedule A of Form 1040 and attach a 1098-C form which you receive from the organization you donate to, with your tax return.

Your charitable deduction is limited to 30 percent of your AGI if the collectible item(s) are capital gain property and donated to a publicly supported charity organization. If your donation is to a private foundation, the limit is 20 percent of AGI. The unused charitable tax deduction can be carried forward to future years; however, you must use the deduction within 5 years; otherwise, you will lose the ability to claim the tax deduction.

The law limits a donor’s charitable deduction to the donor’s tax basis in the contributed property and does not permit the donor to claim a fair market value charitable tax deduction for the charitable contribution if the charity puts the donated property to an unrelated use.

If you are donating works of art or other collectibles to The Giving Center, it is advisable to consult with a CPA financial tax professional so you can receive tax benefits for your charitable donations.

No Charity can give you a tax deduction value at all unless your donation sells, is gifted to another nonprofit or needy individual, or the Charity determines that they will retain the item to utilize in the furtherance of their charitable purpose.
