Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

Inspired by the legendary 1902 Preussen, the first five-masted ship, Royal Clipper was launched in 2000 as a true sailing vessel at 439 feet in length with 54,000 square feet of sails across 42 sails. With five fully rigged masts, the ship is recognized in Guinness World Records as the largest square rigger in service today.

Modeled after the historic clipper ships, Royal Clipper travels under full sail – and by wind power – for up to 80% of its voyages. When the vessel does navigate under power, the energy-efficient engines only use high-quality, low-sulfur gas oil, earning Star Clippers the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate for all three of its clipper ships.

The ship can accommodate as many as 227 passengers in 114 staterooms, along with 106 crew. While on board, guests will enjoy 19,000 square feet of open teak deck, three swimming pools and hidden balconies on either side of the bow, where you can view wildlife like dolphins swimming alongside the ship. This ship underwent a significant upgrade in 2018, followed by another refurbishment in 2021 that included an enhanced ice-class hull. This new addition allows Silver Wind to be one of the most adaptable ships in the fleet, sailing from the polar regions like Antarctica to sunny island climates in the Caribbean and cruising picturesque shorelines along the Mediterranean Sea.

Silver Wind measures about 515 feet in length and has 149 all ocean-view suites, more than 80% of which boast a private veranda. Built in 1931 as a private yacht for Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, an American socialite and philanthropist, this legendary windjammer maintains the elegance of a time gone by.

Originally named Hussar, the 360-foot Sea Cloud has a fascinating history – while the ship started as a private yacht, it later became a floating palace of diplomacy and then a warship. Today, Sea Cloud accommodates up to 64 passengers in 32 outside cabins and carries about 60 crew. The ship also boasts 29 sails, with the height of the main mast towering 184 feet above the water.

When it first launched in Le Havre, France, in November 1985, Wind Star was the world's largest sailing vessel and the flagship for the line. While this schooner may not be the largest tall ship on the seas today, Wind Star is an elegant four-masted sailing yacht and the cruise line's namesake. Since its launch, this ship has been through a few renovations, with the most recent one in 2018. The 360-foot vessel features 73 deluxe ocean-view staterooms that accommodate 148 passengers, and it can carry 101 crew. Four masts stand at 204 feet tall, and six triangular Dacron sails, which are self-furling and computerized, make up a surface area of 21,500 square feet.

As with other Windstar vessels, you'll find the same casual elegance on board this sailing ship. Guests will get to sail away to the music Windstar traditionally plays while raising the flag during every port departure – Vangelis' song "1492: Conquest of Paradise," which is the musical score to the movie of the same name. Launched in July 2021 as one of two new polar vessels and a sister ship to National Geographic Resolution (November 2021), this extraordinary vessel can explore deeper and further into the Earth's polar regions. National Geographic Endurance is the first new polar build in the company's 50-year history, and its name honors the ship of renowned Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. The elegant Scandinavian-inspired design also features the patented X-Bow, offering eco-friendly benefits and a smoother, quieter ride.

National Geographic Endurance is 407 feet in length and has 69 spacious staterooms with large windows or balconies to accommodate up to 126 passengers. The ship also carries 112 crew. Unique onboard amenities include the first polar art exhibit at sea, curated by environmental artist Zaria Forman, and the first igloos at sea. In the summer months, Safari Explorer sets off in search of humpback whales in Alaska and spends winters island hopping in Hawaii. All of the 123 staterooms and suites have a private balcony or terrace. Two culinary options, gastronomic restaurant Nuna and casual dining concept Sila, are part of a collaboration with Ducasse Conseil and Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse; the menus are designed by the renowned French chef. You'll also find beautiful public spaces, a boutique, a theater, expedition rooms and a promenade deck where you can access the bow. Not to be missed is the wellness area, which is a partnership with Biologique Recherche and features amenities like a 14 degrees Fahrenheit snow room with fresh powder snow, a sauna and an indoor pool. Le Commandant Charcot sails to the farthest points in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, including Antarctica and the North Pole. The 24-night Northwest Passage cruise takes guests from Reykjavik in Iceland to Nome, Alaska, and features polar activities like kayaking between the ice floes, snowshoeing, ice fishing or even exploring with a naturalist guide by hovercraft. No. 8: Viking Jupiter - Viking Ocean Cruises

Built in 2019, Viking Jupiter accommodates only 930 guests. Like her popular Viking sister ships, Jupiter features a spacious spa, several dining venues, an intimate jazz lounge, two cinemas, pool with retractable roof and a sports deck.

No. 7: Seabourn Encore - Seabourn Cruise Line

The ultra-luxury Seabourn Encore features 300 suites for 600 passengers with all the amenities of Seabourn’s Odyssey-class ships. New additions to Encore include a VIP area on the top deck, a wellness program and two new restaurants, The Grill by Thomas Keller and Sushi.

No. 6: Viking Sea - Viking Ocean Cruises

The 930-guest Viking Sea was built in 2016 as the second oceangoing vessel in the Viking fleet. Itineraries are destination focused, but onboard, passengers enjoy an inclusive experience with all-veranda staterooms, plenty of public spaces to spread out, excellent alternative dining options and top-notch service.

No. 5: Viking Sky - Viking Ocean Cruises

The 930-passenger Viking Sky feels more like a resort than a cruise ship, thanks to its all-veranda staterooms, tasteful decorations and elegant public spaces for reading, relaxing or socializing. Little extras, like numerous USB ports, ocean-facing lounge chairs on the pool deck and floor-to-ceiling windows in most venues, make for a comfortable sailing experience.

No. 4: Azamara Journey - Azamara

Azamara Club Cruises describes the Azamara Journey as “a luxurious boutique hotel at sea.” With a capacity of less than 700 passengers, this intimate vessel is packed with modern amenities, including a large number of suites, a spa, fitness center, pool and several restaurants, bars and lounges.

No. 3: Viking Orion - Viking Ocean Cruises

The new 930-guest Viking Orion offers all-veranda staterooms with amenities like free wifi, flatscreen TVs and heated bathroom floors. It’s also the first ship in the fleet to feature a high-tech planetarium in a 26-seat dome theater.

No. 2: American Constitution - American Cruise Lines

Carrying just 175 passengers, the American Constitution was designed to navigate the U.S. East Coast’s inland coastal waterways. The vessel offers large staterooms, spacious lounges, observation decks, and private balconies in many cabins with detail to elegance. Complimentary Wi-Fi, a fitness room, a grand dining room, a sundeck, and a putting green are some of the many amenities available.

No. 1: Royal Clipper - Star Clippers

Designed after the tall ship Preussen, the Royal Clipper is the world’s largest full-rigged sailing ship, complete with 42 sails. The vessel carries just 227 guests with luxurious accommodations and modern amenities like three swimming pools, relaxed dining and a marina platform for water sports. Passengers can even don a harness and climb the mast to a crow nest.

Cruises are amazing, but sometimes mega cruise ships can leave you feeling like cattle being herded through long lines at the buffet and at port debarkation. Smaller ship cruising is where it’s at — if you can afford it, that is. More intimate ships not only translate to fewer fellow passengers, but it also means you can visit lesser-known ports. Plus, you’re less likely to get lost on the way back to your room.

As part of our Best of Travel Awards, TravelAwaits readers nominated and voted on their favorite small ship cruise lines. Here are the results!

1. Viking Cruises (Winner)

Viking Cruises is quite popular with our readers. Not only did the line top this category, but it also took home the gold for best Mediterranean cruise line . There’s plenty to love about this small ship cruise line. Viking does not allow kids under 18, does not have casinos or umbrella drinks, does not allow smoking on board, and doesn’t have formal nights to get gussied up for.

What Viking does offer is an  onshore excursion  in every port,  regional cuisine , and Wi-Fi. Luxe accommodations feature king-size beds, large showers, heated bathroom floors, private verandas, 24-hour room service, and more.

Touted as the “thinking person’s cruise line,” Viking also offers  culturally enriching  programs such as guest lecturers, resident historians, regional performance arts such as traditional Greek dancing, an onboard cooking school, and more.

“The team at Viking Cruises will make your stay so wonderful you won’t want to go home. 2. Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises is pretty pricey, but veteran cruiser Melody Pittman says it is worth it . Windstar small cruise ships host anywhere from 148 to 342 guests, allowing them to reach ports you may not see on other itineraries, including Tahiti, Kobe, Bordeaux, and  Honfleur .

Plus, Windstar is the official cruise line of the  James Beard Foundation , so you know you’re in for a culinary treat. Many of the high-end foods are locally sourced and specialty restaurants are included in your cruise fare. Read about Pittman’s favorite dishes from her voyage on the Star Legend . There’s also 24-hour room service and unlimited ice cream!

From scuba diving to visiting private islands, a wide range of shore excursions are available. Windstar also offers custom tours which can range from a solo trip to a carefully curated excursion for your group to see the sights with your own English-speaking guide. There are also culinary shore excursions!

3. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises’ 12 main vessels carry about 2,000-3,000 passengers each, but they are still much smaller than, say, a Royal Caribbean cruise liner. Generally, the bigger the Celebrity ship, the newer it is and the more amenities it will have. Its older Millennium Class ships are more intimate.

A few tiny ships, which carry 16 to 100 passengers apiece, are based in the Galápagos, including the Celebrity Flora . This luxury mega-yacht features all-suite accommodations, two chef-inspired restaurants, and an optional glamping experience where you can sleep under the stars.

4. Silversea Cruises

Known for award-winning entertainment, butler service, and 24-hour gourmet dining, Silversea Cruises goes above and beyond all-inclusive and chauffeurs guests from their house to the airport and back. Airfare and pre-and post-cruise hotel nights are included, too!

In addition to iconic destinations, Silversea goes to off-the-beaten-track ports that only small ships can reach. Enjoy a complimentary shore excursion every day or customize your own. Silversea also offers expeditions to remote regions like Antarctica.

Enjoy butler service in every suite and a staff-to-guest ratio of nearly one to one. Champagne, wine, beer, and premium spirits are on the house, and tips are included, too!

5. Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn Cruise Line’s young, modern fleet boasts of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the industry. Intimate ships mean Seabourn can visit everything from marquee ports to hidden harbors where larger ships cannot go. Plus, with nearly one staff member per guest, the crew is able to remember guests’ names. All of the luxuriously appointed suites are oceanfront and come with a Personal Suite Host and Suite Attendant who can do anything from drawing you a bubble bath to assisting in arranging an in-suite cocktail party. Tipping is not required or expected and premium wine, champagne, and spirits, are included.

Best Small Ships

Un-cruise adventures, silver spirit, silver whisper, seabourn sojourn.

Small ships range from megayachts and sailing vessels of less than 5,000 tons to ships of about 25,000 tons. These ships may carry as few as 70 passengers or as many as 350 and tend to be more upscale although that isn’t always the case.

Because of their small size, these ships never have elaborate facilities and amenities. And that’s not really the point of a small-ship cruise anyway. You might find a small spa with a couple of treatment rooms and a fitness room, though you’ll rarely encounter a fully equipped gym.

Public spaces are similarly limited. On smaller vessels, passengers tend to entertain themselves rather than be entertained. Therefore, lounges on small ships are more intimate, and the only entertainment is usually done cabaret-style. There are no big Broadway or Las Vegas revues. There’s rarely room for multiple dining venue, so small ships ordinarily have a single restaurant that can accommodate all guests in a single open seating. Gracious service and fine dining are paramount, and your table is likely to be set with signature china, European crystal, and heavy silver, and covered with Belgian linens. Cabins may be luxe but will rarely be large.

Intriguing itineraries are more often the focus of the voyage and often include some ports of call that are inaccessible to larger ships.

9 Great Small-Ship Cruises in 2022

The cruise industry came roaring back in 2022.

And we saw more and more people flocking to the smaller cruise ships, embracing highly curated experiences that give them all-inclusive, hassle-free vacations away from the crowds.

I should know! I went on nine small-ship cruises this year, and the voyages hit a range of styles — exotic expeditions in the Galapagos and Alaska ; luxury cruises; Caribbean, French Riviera and Mediterranean yachting adventures; and river cruises in America’s heartland and along the Nile to discover ancient Egypt .

SeaDream Yacht Club — SeaDream II

SeaDream II carries up to 112 passengers, and I sailed with about half that many on a cruise out of West Palm Beach, Florida, to the Caribbean.

During our weeklong cruise on this yacht, we had sunny days visiting Nassau, Salt Cay, San Salvador Island and Jost Van Dyke in the Bahamas, before making our way to Puerta Plata and Isla Saona in the Dominican Republic, finally finishing our voyage in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

What I Loved about SeaDream II

This cruise is all about getting outside and unleashing your true yachting spirit. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are offered on the outer decks, and we took advantage as much as possible.

There is a main dining room, too, and it is nice to have dinner in the more formal setting a couple times, but having meals outside in warm breezes under the sun or stars is what this ship is all about.

The food and service also is top notch, and SeaDream offers a signature beach party with Champagne and caviar served up in the surf. This is an all-inclusive luxury experience.

We also enjoyed relaxing on the pool deck at the aft of the ship, which has a small pool and hot tub. This space overlooks the marina at the back of the ship. The marina is the place for a variety of water sports activities, like sailing, paddling, kayaking and swimming.

SeaDream II Caveats

The ship is older (built in 1985), so it feels a bit rustic, which can be either charming or frustrating depending on your expectations. The cabins are quite spacious and nicely decorated, but there are no balconies on this ship.

The SeaDream II travels all over the world. For example, cruisers can enjoy an eight-day Western Med cruise from Rome to Barcelona starting at $6,499 per person.

Viking Cruises — Viking Octantis

Viking’s first expedition ship is a revelation, and we sailed on a relocation voyage — as the ship moved north for its first season in the Great Lakes — to get a feel for this spacious 378-passenger ship.

We embarked in Barbados and visited St. Kitts and San Juan, P.R., on our way to New York City.

What I Loved about Viking Octantis

Viking Octantis is packed with features and amenities that make expedition cruising more comfortable than you could ever imagine. The LivNordic Spa has a large pool, as well as a snow room, sauna and plunge pool. There is a nice fitness center, huge Living Room lounge space, the Explorers’ Lounge, Finse Terrace outdoor deck space at the aft and The Aula theater for enrichment talks and movies.

You also get all the Viking favorite restaurant experiences, such as Mamsen’s and World Café.

The ship also is built for exploration and science. The expedition team gives talks in The Aula relating to the regions where you are sailing, and operations launch from The Hangar and The Landing facilities at the bottom of the ship. This is where you have lockers to store your expedition gear and can get into the Zodiacs and Special Operations Boats for tours around your destination. The ship also carries two submarines.

A Science Lab offers interactive experiences, allowing passengers to help the team of onboard scientists study water quality or run other tests. The ship also regularly launches weather balloons, so it is a true working science vessel.

Viking Octantis Caveats

With 378 passengers, Viking Octantis is a larger ship than many of the 36- to 200-passenger ships that operate in Antarctica, so the program will be quite different for how people are able to get ashore and where Viking Octantis can go in this part of the world.

The Great Lakes sailings are in high demand, and Viking offers a Niagara and Great Lakes cruise for eight days starting at $5,995 per person.

Silversea — Silver Origin

This is the new 100-passenger all-inclusive luxury ship that sails weeklong expeditions in the Galapagos. Silver Origin has a wonderful indoor/outdoor marina with an attached living room/boutique/guest relations area where cruisers can use interactive screens to learn about the Galapagos, relax with a book during times of sailing and gather to get ready and await Zodiac transport out to the next snorkeling spot or shore excursion.

On the ship, butlers take care of you in beautiful and spacious suites. Silver Origin offers a spa, fitness center and two restaurants, including a wonderful outdoor grill at the top of the ship where we had lunch every day and a few dinners, as well.

The lounges include a main theater type space midship and an adjacent outdoor space at the back of the ship with “fire pits,” as well as a nice enclosed observation lounge/library at the very top and forward on Silver Origin .

We sailed roundtrip from San Cristobal and spent a week popping by remote islands to snorkel with sea lions, interact with boobies and observe fascinating fish, tortoises, crabs and seals.

What I Loved about Silver Origin

This is luxury expedition cruising at its finest, with long busy days filled with exciting excursions to see colorful birds and partake in amazing physical activities in one of the most exotic places on earth.

It’s so wonderful to come back to a luxury ship with outstanding attentive service and gourmet cuisine that is a mix of preparations highlighting the Galapagos and Ecuador (ceviches and fresh fish) and traditional favorites (steaks, pastas and sweet desserts).

It’s all made extra special because of the Ecuadorian crew that takes pride in showing off this special place and taking great care of their guests.

Silver Origin Caveat

The most elegant ship to ever cruise in the Galapagos is a pricy proposition, of course. These ultra-luxury voyages start around $14,000 per person. That’s $2,000 per person per day!

Silver Origin sails roundtrip Galapagos cruises from San Cristobal year-round, and the door-to-door prices include transfers from your home to the airport and back, economy class airfare, transfers, pre-cruise hotel stays and everything onboard.

Star Clippers — Star Clipper

Summertime in the south of France sounds delightful, doesn’t it? Well, it is, especially if you do it on a classic four-masted sailing ship like Star Clipper.

We were true sailors (or at least romanticized about it here and there) during our weeklong voyage roundtrip from Cannes.

Star Clipper is one of three small sailing ships in the fleet of Star Clippers, which also operates the flagship Royal Clipper and Star Flyer. Star Clipper  carries up to 170 passengers, and we sailed with about 120 during a summer trip in ideal conditions, with sunny days and temps in the low 80s as we visited the small ports of Portofino, L’Ile Rousse, Calvi, and Plage Saint Antoine, Corsica, as well as Cavalaire sur Mer and Saint Tropez.

What I Loved about the Star Clipper

Star Clipper has a well-worn look and feel but is a beautiful sailing ship that beckons cruisers to spend the days topside. The teak is weathered, but I loved walking barefoot during the day and even dancing sans shoes at the ship’s Tropical Bar every evening.

We were delighted to enjoy each day our way, going ashore for pizza and beer in Portofino, and a scenic hike and stop for craft beers in charming Calvi, or just swimming and savoring a day at the beach at Plage Saint Antoine. We even enjoyed a lunch with friends at the pretty marina in Cavalare sur Mer and a dinner at a quaint restaurant tucked within the cobbled alleyways in St. Tropez.

The ship also was a destination, with activities like swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing offered, as well as a fun scramble up the mast to the crow’s nest overlooking the deck below. Each night as we departed our port, the sails went up as passengers gathered on the top deck to watch the crew work the lines.

The crew is friendly and energetic, with many of them participating in a fun crew show toward the end of the voyage.

Star Clipper Caveats

The standard cabins are small and only offer a porthole, as well as drab décor and beds that are not especially comfortable. The food also is basic and bland, at best.

Star Clipper offers cruises all over the world, visiting smaller ports that interest adventurous travelers. A seven-night Costa Rica and Nicaragua cruise typically starts around $4,450 per person, but we’ve seen specials of up to 65 percent of the brochure rate.

American Queen Voyages — American Queen

This one was on my list of must-cruise vessels for quite a while, and we finally got to enjoy the world’s largest passenger paddlewheeler during a weeklong fanciful journey on the Ohio River. American Queen was built in 1995 and is a replica of a classic Mississippi steamboat.

This boat carries up 417 passengers, and cruisers love this vessel, coming back again and again to be transported back in time to an era of relaxing and scenic travel along the great interior waterways of America.

We embarked in Pittsburgh, and the weeklong sailing stopped at the small towns of Marietta, Ohio; Huntington, West Virginia; Augusta, Kentucky; and Marion, Indiana; as well as Cincinnati, before we ended the trip in Louisville.

What I Loved about the American Queen

American Queen features large interior spaces packed with vintage décor and plenty of views of the river as you lazily churn from port to port.

It’s a delight sitting in the white rocking chairs at the railings of the outer decks to watch the boat pass through locks, take in the sunset or revel in the crowds who gather along the banks in the small towns as American Queen arrives or departs.

Make sure to spend time at the back of the boat and watch the iconic red paddlewheel churn the river water. That’s what makes this boat special.

These charming little towns along the way throw open their arms to welcome visitors, and it so nice to stroll around town, have a meal or drink at the bars and restaurants and do a little shopping in these places.

American Queen Voyages offers a hop-on, hop-off bus that traces a route around the towns to take visitors to points of interest like museums or shopping districts. I enjoyed spending time at a railroad museum and Marshall University campus while in Huntington.

The boat also carries bikes, so that you can take a ride around your destination and really get a feel for what it’s like to live and work in these serene and charming places in the middle of the country.

American Queen Caveats

This is not the ship for you if you need a day full of onboard programming and activities. Things can be a little slow paced (average age of the cruisers was about 70 on our sailing).

Programming includes enrichment talks about the river and history from riverlorians, and you get some trivia contests and live music in the lounges or a singers and dancers putting on shows in the main theater in the evenings.

Sample Itinerary for American Queen

You can take trips up and down the Mississippi River, as well as find sailings on the Ohio.

The Mississippi cruises represent the classic voyages on American Queen , though, and a nine-day Lower Mississippi cruise from Memphis to New Orleans that visits Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi, and St. Francisville and Nottoway, Louisiana, starts at $2,099.

American Queen Voyages — Ocean Victory

Alaska is my favorite destination, with its wide-open spaces, incredible beauty, abundance of animals and opportunities for adventurous activities. We went on an expedition with American Queen Voyages (AQV) on the fantastic 186-passenger purpose-built ship Ocean Victory .

Our 11-day voyage started in Vancouver, Canada, and ended in Sitka, Alaska. Our itinerary featured stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg and Kake, as well as expedition days in Misty Fjord National Monument and Tracy Arm Fjord.

What I Loved about Ocean Victory

Ocean Victory features a range of great spaces ideal for expeditions in Alaska.

The ship has innovative viewing platforms that stick out like wings on each side of the bow on Deck 5 and are easily accessible from the lounge area, so you can bolt out there for whale sightings or other items of interest, like dolphins, seabirds or icebergs.

At the top of the ship, there is a large deck with a pool and hot tubs. Plus, a restaurant with a terrace for eating outdoors when the conditions allow. This is also where the line holds a fantastic barbecue lunch once per voyage.

The program is a nice mix of expedition cruising with light adventures, making it accessible to more people, alongside visits to small ports. This gives it a feel of hybrid expedition/traditional cruise.

During your trip, you also have onboard games and activities like piano sing-a-longs, dancing, trivia contests and enrichment presentations. Expedition activities included Zodiac tours and kayaking sessions.

Ocean Victory Caveats

This is a very light expedition. So, if you are looking for something more hardcore and active, this is not for you.

Emerald Cruises — Emerald Azzurra

Yacht-style cruising is gaining favor, and more small boutique cruise ships are in the works. Emerald Cruises’ first ocean-going vessel is Emerald Azzurra , and the 100-passenger ship offers a great mix of things to do.

We sailed from Dubrovnik, Croatia, to Civitavecchia, Italy, during a seven-day itinerary that offered visits to small Italian ports like Monopoli, Otranto, Crotone, Giardini Naxos, Amalfi and Sorrento.

What I Loved about Emerald Azzurra

The elegant and modern design of the ship stands out everywhere you go. It’s a sleek vessel with a huge space-to-passenger ratio that means ultimate comfort as you stroll the observation decks or relax up top at the large hot tub or pool area.

It’s a great ship to visit small ports where the bigger cruise ships can’t reach.

We didn’t see another cruise vessel at any of our stops all week.

Emerald Azzurra features fantastic cuisine, with fresh fish and regional specialties like squid, mussels and clams highlighted in the daily menus. We loved the specialty flatbreads offered at the Aqua Café outdoor eatery, which also serves up amazing gelatos, cookies and other desserts.

The spa is outstanding, with two treatment rooms and an infrared sauna, as well as a well-equipped gym. Plus, the marina at the back of the ship was filled with great toys. We hopped on the trampoline, lazed on floating mats, kayaked the scenic harbor area of Amalfi and tried out the Seabobs (water scooters).

The ship also carries a fleet of e-assist bikes, and we took advantage for a couple of rides along the coasts — in Monopoli and Giardini Naxos.

Caveats of Emerald Azzurra

Most of the port visits require tenders ashore, which makes the process of going ashore a little slower and limits the chance to hop on and hop off the yacht at your leisure.

Emerald Azzurra sails Caribbean, Med and Red Sea voyages, and an eight-day Eastern Caribbean with St. Barths cruise goes from St. Martin to Barbados, with stops in Antigua and Barbuda, Guadelupe, Martinique, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Fares start at $3,800 per person.

Windstar Cruises — Star Breeze

Windstar stretched this motor yacht. Yes, you can do that with a cruise ship — to expand the capacity from 212 passengers to 312. This process, which entails cutting the ship in half and inserting a new section, included an overall renovation that added new restaurants.

The result is a greatly enhanced yacht that we enjoyed while sailing on a seven-day journey in French Polynesia.

During this memorable week, we played in the waters, learned about the culture and geology of the region and basically blissed out in paradise.

What I Loved about Star Breeze

Star Breeze will be permanently located in French Polynesia starting in early 2024, and the ship is perfectly suited for the location.

You get a variety of islands and activities to thoroughly enjoy during the voyage. We started in Papeete, Tahiti, and had days of adventure and exploration in Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Taha’a and Raiatea.

Star Breeze offers five restaurants, including a main dining room, Star Grill outdoors casual eatery, Veranda buffet, Candles steakhouse and Cuadro 44, a Spanish tapas and wine bar. This provided an incredible array of dining options featuring delicious cuisine for a weeklong cruise. We also made great use of the marina for swimming and kayaking sessions around the ship.

Aside from daily excursions that included whale watching, snorkeling, helmet diving and a tour up a remote river, one of our favorite activities was the Destination Discovery Event in Bora Bora. This is Windstar’s immersive evening on a motu (small islet) with a big dinner buffet and performances by Polynesian musicians, singers and hula and fire dancers.

Caveats of Star Breeze

It’s a long flight to Tahiti, taking a couple legs before you get there, and the time change will be at least four hours from the U.S. west coast.

It can take a day or two to shake off the jet lag, so it can be a wise move to plan to arrive at least one day before your cruise to get acclimated.

Windstar offers cruises on Star Breeze in Tahiti that include an air and hotel package. It’s an eight-day itinerary that goes roundtrip from Papeete and includes a stay in the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort and Spa, with a starting price of $6,099.

Viking — Viking Osiris

Viking has upped the ante for Nile River cruising with the 82-passenger Viking Osiris. This is the most-luxurious river ship on the Nile, and I was onboard for the inaugural voyage and naming ceremony, as we sailed roundtrip from Luxor.

The ship offers all the familiar features that make Viking so special. This ship now matches the comfort and feel of the Viking ocean, river and expedition ships, with design that evokes a modern boutique hotel and wonderful dining options and service.

What I Loved about Viking Osiris

Viking Osiris is incredibly spacious with a huge lounge and bar area, the Aquavit Terrace and a small swimming pool.

The top Sun Deck is a favorite spot, with well-organized seating areas in both sunshine and shade. These include rocking chairs and couches providing an inviting space to enjoy the scenic sailing along the Nile.

Staterooms also are spacious and elegant. The food and service matches what cruisers have come to expect on Viking, with great meals featuring both classics that cater to Western tastes and regional specialties. These are available in The Restaurant or in a more casual setting at Aquavit Terrace.

Caveats of a Viking Osiris river cruise

If you pick a summer sailing (July and August) on Viking Osiris , you will be going out on your excursions in intense heat. Most days, we were melting under 108-degree temperatures. This can make the experience a little more challenging when traveling in these months, so you probably want to book when the weather is relatively milder.

Sample Viking Osiris Itinerary

Viking operates one program in Egypt. The “Pharaohs and Pyramids” itinerary starts and ends in Cairo, with a pre-cruise and post-cruise hotel stay, as well as visits to all the must-see spots while in Egypt’s capital. You get the Great Pyramids, Sphinx and Egyptian Museum.

On the river, your voyage takes you to the Temples of Luxor and Karnak and the Valley of the Kings to see the tombs of the great rulers of Ancient Egypt. You also have visits to places like Edfu, Aswan and Abu Simbel to see more temples and visits markets.

Fares start at $5,299 per person.

Authentic. It was Merriam Webster’s top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises—particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer—indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn’t a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

• Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain’s Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What’s more authentic—and sustainable—than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises’ unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world’s largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There’s a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

• Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Voyager , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company’s 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship—including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows—is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There’s even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas’s expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Voyager , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

• Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe’s oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner’s suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

The $2 billion, 7,000-plus passenger ship has proven hugely popular and is booking up fast. But even as travelers around the world showcase increased interest in vacationing at sea, the internet's vocal aversion to the massive vessel proves mega-ships aren't for everyone.

That doesn't mean you need to rule off cruising altogether — small cruises, river cruises, and expedition ships offer a more intimate alternative.

Plus, as port towns across the US and Europe move to ban large cruise ships due to concerns of overcrowding and pollution , smaller vessels can access destinations off-limits to their super-sized counterparts.

UnCruise Adventures Packs the "Adventure" Into Small Ship Alaska Cruising

UnCruise Adventures offers small ship Alaska cruises that are highly popular with adventure seekers. Sustainability is front and center, as expeditions focus on local culture, regional cuisine and nature.

UnCruise offers eleven distinct small ship Alaska cruise itineraries, ranging from seven to 14 nights. Seventy-six-passenger Wilderness Discoverer , 86-passenger Wilderness Legacy , 84-passenger Safari Endeavour , 36-passenger Safari Explorer and 22-passenger Safari Quest all have kayaks, standup paddleboards and hot tubs onboard.

UnCruise offers one of the longest Alaska cruise seasons in the industry, with departures from April through September. Fares are pricey but include all activities and beverages.

Most UnCruise small ships in Alaska sail between Ketchikan and Juneau , between Sitka and Juneau, or round trip from Juneau. There are itineraries scheduled to cater to kids, others that are adult-only, and options that stay positioned at Glacier Bay National Park for two full days, allowing guests to hike the shore and visit the park headquarters. UnCruise also offers land extensions.

Alaskan Dream Cruises Places the Focus on Culture

Alaskan Dream Cruises , which is owned and operated by the Allen family (members of the Tlingit Kaagwaantaan clan), specializes in voyages that have strong focus on community and culture on an active small ship Alaska cruise.

Alaskan Dream Cruises operates a fleet of four small ships. Alaskan Dream , the eponymously named ship, carries 40 passengers; Admiralty Dream has cabins for 49 people; the 143-foot Baranof Dream carries 49 people and Chichagof Dream has capacity for 74 passengers.

Lindblad pioneered the expedition cruise several decades ago and has partnered with National Geographic since 2004. It remains a leader in the field and is a great choice for small ship Alaska cruises that put landscapes and wildlife front and center.

There aren’t just one or two naturalists onboard Lindblad cruises, but four or five. Plus, many of the line's itineraries feature a team of professional photographers onboard to help you snap the best possible shots.

The Lindblad Alaska fleet includes five ships. The 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion have been with the line since 1981, but have been refurbished and are still well suited to long and short Alaska itineraries. National Geographic Quest and National Geographic Venture carry 100 passengers apiece.

National Geographic Resolution is the line’s newest ship, carrying 138 guests. Purpose-built for expedition-style cruising, Resolution, Quest and Venture were designed with special touches including a shallow draft and state-of-the-art twin expedition craft landing platforms for getting out onto the water for even closer encounters.

Lindblad's Alaska ships are known for being family-friendly, with more children onboard than similar small ships. Discounts are offered and programming is spot-on.

From just six days to more than two weeks, Lindblad has a unique mix of itineraries, including stops like Juneau, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay, Alert Bay, Haida Gwaii, Katmai, Kodiak and Lindblad's signature stop in the Inian Islands, where wildlife is rich. Activities are included, as are cocktails, spirits and Wi-Fi.

American Cruise Lines Pampers a More Laid Back Group of Passengers

American Cruise Lines , often associated with river and coastal cruising throughout the lower 48 states, uses that expertise to offer some of the best small ship Alaska cruises that aren’t focused wholly on adventure. The line attracts an older crowd looking for an immersive, accessible cruise experience.

As with its other destinations, its Alaska sailings are heavy on narrated boat, coach and walking tours. At least one tour is complimentary in each port, with optional tours available to purchase.

American Constellation carries 170 passengers and most of its staterooms have private balconies. Rooms range from 226 to 450 square feet -- they're billed as being among the largest in Alaska. There's elevator service to all decks, which is a great feature for those with mobility issues. There are solo cabins and even though there are designated accessible staterooms, all staterooms have accessible features.

Itineraries range from eight to 15 nights, plus two options that include land packages for a total of 18 nights. Round trip sailings out of Juneau, or between Juneau and Seattle, generally include stops in Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point , Wrangell , Haines , Petersburg , Sitka and Tracy Arm .

Because these are not expedition-style cruises, the fares, though higher than a traditional mainstream cruise, are lower than many other small ship Alaska cruise lines. Fares are all inclusive of beverages, gratuities, port fees and even airfare and pre-cruise hotel stays in some cases.

The Boat Company Is the Best Small Ship Alaska Cruise for Fishing

Michael McIntosh started The Boat Company in 1979 as a nonprofit educational organization. This means several things for cruisers: A part of the fare is tax deductible, and your trip will have a strong emphasis on conservation, as all after-cost proceeds go to supporting conservation efforts in Southeast Alaska.

The company has two small ships: the 24-passenger Mist Cove and 20-passenger Liseron . Both come with fishing equipment, so put The Boat Company on top of your list if you’re an avid angler. Despite bigger yachts dominating the new boat scene in recent decades, there are still any number of builders making new smaller cruisers. Here's our pick of the best small cruising yachts in 2023

We have seen a surprisingly large number of builders going against the grain to bring small cruising yachts to market in the last year or so, ranging from trailer0-sailers to smaller traditionally-styled options. Here, we’ve rounded up 4 of the best small cruising yachts launched in the last year.

Typically this size of yacht appeals to those who are looking for a day sailer or weekender and will often offer reduced draught in able to allow you to go creek crawling or nose your way into otherwise hard to get to anchorages.

The best small cruising yachts 2023

Once you’ve seen one, Bente yachts are unmistakable. We revisited the brand’s first boat, the Bente 24 , a couple of issues ago, which has been around for 10 years or so. The brand then launched the striking Bente 39 which was immensely innovative, but the company ran into financial difficulties. Now under new owners and a more stable footing, a third model has been launched, which I can’t wait to test sail. The Bente 28 is unlike any other 28-footer.

The hull is cutting edge with wide transom, double rudders and full bows providing a powerful hull form as well as volume below. Construction is polyester GRP foam sandwich, with the basic version being heavier hand lamination, and the more expensive Edition version being vacuum infused. While this is a boat designed to be fast, it’s a long way from a wild racing boat.

Displacement is a not outlandish 3.2 tonnes and draught is 1.6m (there’s an option for a 1.95m performance T-keel with lead bulb that’s 100kg lighter), so it fits well within the scope of a sensible cruising boat.

The Tide 25, built by MFH in north Germany – began its life as a Dehler SQ25, but the mould was sold off when that company hit hard times. Plumb bows and stern with a long hull chine, bevelled deck edge and twin rudders put her on trend, and maximise performance under sail and accommodation on board.

On deck, she has a large cockpit with benches forward and four decent lockers. Under the cockpit sole there’s access to what would be engine space for a diesel inboard, now housing batteries for the electric motors.

Opt for the sport version, and you’ll get beefed up deck hardware and a minimalist fit out, with the mainsheet traveller across the transom, while the comfort version has a smaller main with the mainsheet coming to a fixed point on the cockpit sole forward of the helm. The rig has aft-swept spreaders and no backstay.

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Below deck the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart).

Swallow Yachts 32

Aimed at sailors who may have owned larger yachts before but want to downsize, Swallow Yachts owner Matt Newland explained that he ‘wanted to build a boat that was fun and easy to sail, simple to maintain and had timeless looks with as low an environmental impact as possible.’

Though not a true launch-and-sail trailer sailer, a four-by-four will still be able to tow the 32 on her own trailer, as boat and trailer come in at under 3.5 tonnes, and within the 2.9m overhang limit.

With a keel-down draught of 2.8m, a fine entry at the bow and broad aft sections, this boat promises to be a good performer. You can sail with the lifting keel in any position for shoal waters, but lift it all the way and you’ve got a draught of just 40cm for creek crawling and drying out.

Newland has tried to draw lines that are timeless rather than trendy while a retractable bowsprit, backstayless carbon rig and square-top mainsail ensure she is right up there in terms of her contemporary design and latest tech.

Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. This yacht looks like a traditional, cold-molded Down East dayboat, but actually, it has everything, from Hamilton HJX Series water-jet drives to a planned Sea Machines autonomous command-and-control system . Top speed: 40-plus knots.

Galeon yachts 375 gto.

Even the remnants of Hurricane Ian, couldn’t dissuade the Galeon Yacht 375 GTO from its cruising mission. The small yacht’s wave-splitting hull form is paired to torque-filled 600 hp Mercury Verado outboards , giving this fun-in-the-sun boat a 47-knot top hop.

The 375 GTO is a speedster, to be sure, but it’s also so much more. Just about every aspect of the main deck seating is transformable and multifunction, from the aft seating to the alfresco dining abaft the helm, and beyond. It also has a family-size and eminently cruise-worthy belowdecks space for four guests, all while providing a foredeck entertaining lounge too.

The Galeon Yachts 375 GTO ticks all the boxes for an easy-to-handle and sporty cruiser.

Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran

Following the success of its 44-, 54- and 70-foot power catamaran models, Aquila has launched the stable-as-a-table, owner-operator-ready Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran .

The Aquila 42 is the entry point into the builder’s yacht line and is noteworthy for its ability to accommodate anywhere from a two- to four-stateroom layout, depending on the owner’s cruising requirements. There are alfresco spaces to manage the sunset cruise with friends and family, including a foredeck lounge area that can be accessed via centerline steps from the flybridge. The Aquila 42 is available with several Volvo Penta diesel-engine options .

Azimut Verve 42

Want to cruise from Florida to Bimini in about an hour? The Azimut Yachts Verve 42 can do that thanks, in part, to triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards and a hull designed to dice-and-slice a seaway. Top hop: 45 knots. The Verve 42 also has style for miles with a fine entry, raked hardtop, and a razorlike sheerline accented by sweeping hull glass from bow to stern. It’s striking.

With accommodation for a family of four, the Verve 42 is also solid under the hull tokeep everyone safe on those passages. The Verve 42’s hull is built of fiberglass and uses vinylester resins for blister protection. The yacht’s deck and hardtop are comprised of carbon fiber for strength without added weight. This all means that the Azimut Verve 42 is built to CE Classification Type A , making it suitable for sea voyages where winds can exceed 45 mph and seas to 13 feet.

Hinckley Yachts 35

The Hinckley Yachts 35 takes everything that yachtsmen like about this pedigreed-brand’s classic profile and infuses today’s modern outboard power to create 40 knots of sheer fun wrapped in sheer luxury.

This 35-foot Hinckley is built on a Michael-Peters-penned hull form with a fine entry, wider-than-average chines and a moderate deadrise. While the boat is built to sprint when desired, it’s also a relatively economical cruiser. For instance, a comfortable 24-knot cruise the Hinckley Yachts 35 has a 276-nautical-mile range.

It also has a tech-build thanks to vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

The Beneteau Gran Turismo is the flagship of the builder’s four-model GT series, which also includes 32-, 36- and 41-foot models.

The Gran Turismo 45 ’s cruise-centric layout includes two staterooms and two heads belowdecks, as well as a galley down. There is also a dinette for meals and a settee for rainy-day lounging. Entertaining guests and enjoying the sun is the primary mission of the main deck.

Solaris Power 48 Open

The Solaris Power 48 Open was the first powerboat from this longtime builder known for its sailing yachts, ranging from 40 to 110 feet length overall. The Solaris Power 48 Open is notable for its wave-slicing plumb-bow design, high freeboard forward and 32-knot-plus speed. Power is twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels.

The high freeboard keeps the deck dry and help creates sizable volume belowdecks with an average 6-foot-6-inch headroom. This enables real estate for either one or two staterooms. With the single-stateroom setup, there is a forepeak master stateroom while an L-shaped settee converts to sleeping accommodations for family or occasional guests. Interior wood options are oak or walnut.

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Outboard-power cruising aficionados will appreciate the triple-engine options for the Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS . The 42 GLS we got aboard had the triple 400 hp Mercury Verados , which produced a top hop of 45 knots, but triple 450 hp Verados are available. Triple 350 hp Mercury Verados are the standard engine option. No matter the power arrangement, this express cruiser can easily be used for wakeboarding and tube towing. The 42 GLS is designed to handle the rough stuff too, with a fine entry and 21-degree transom deadrise.

For cruising enthusiasts, the 42 GLS has a master stateroom with an athwartships and a nearly queen-size berth, and the lower salon’s U-shaped dinette converts to a queen-size berth for the kids.

Back Cove 34O

Combining modern outboard power with classic Downeast styling, the Back Cove 34O touts award-winning standards with cruising in mind. The 34O is equipped with twin 300 hp Yamaha outboards, engines that allow the Newport International Boat Show’s 2018 Best Powerboat Under 35 Feet winner to travel up to 214 nautical miles at 24 knots on a 250-gallon fuel tank.

Belowdecks, the 34O has an island double berth and a split-head arrangement with the toilet to port and a separate shower stall to starboard. On the main deck, a U-shape dinette to port accommodates four or more guests on the Back Cove Yachts vessel. The 34O’s galley is equipped with a Cuisinart microwave, a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop and a Vitrifrigo fridge and freezer.

Picnic Boat 40

Hinckley Yachts unveiled its first Picnic Boat more than two decades ago. Now, after two previous, sub-40-foot models, the Maine-based boatbuilder has developed its largest and most advanced model to date: the Picnic Boat 40.

Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines paired to twin Hamilton 322 jet drives propel the yacht to a 30-knot cruising speed and 34 knots on the pins. With optional twin 550 hp Cummins diesels, cruise and top-end speeds jump to 35 and 38 knots, respectively.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. There is also a companion seat across from the helm. Belowdecks, there is 6-foot-2-inch headroom, and the dinette table drops to form a California-king berth for overnights and weekending.

Aquila Power Catamarans started its line with 44- and 48-footers, and now the builder’s Aquila 36 takes the line into the midsize market.

The 36 features a single, main-living area from bow to stern, helped in part by the vessel’s 14-foot, 7-inch beam. The boat can comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt. Several Mercury Verado engine options are available for the Aquila 36, including twin 250-, 300- and 350-hp four-strokes. With the 350s, the Aquila has a top-end speed of 37 knots.

Other notable features include a fiberglass hardtop, a dinette, a cooktop, a fridge, a sink and a smokeless grill. Belowdecks, there are two staterooms with nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads and 6-foot-6-inch headroom in each.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

From fishing and entertaining guests to diving and overnight cruising, Boston Whaler ‘s 350 Realm is a multitasker. And it’s fast, too. It’s powered with either triple 300 hp or triple 350 hp Mercury Verados. The 350 Realm can reach a top speed of 46 knots.

At the helm, two Raymarine displays provide vital navigation data. The captain can take in the displays’ view from a doublewide helm seat. There’s a flip-down platform for standing when needed and a footrest when desired.

There is a V-shaped berth that converts into a double berth with a filler cushion. The separated head has a VacuFlush MSD and a hot-and-cold shower. Owners also have the option to add a microwave and a flat-screen TV.

The MJM 35z can reach a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots on its optional 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards; twin 300 hp outboards are standard on this MJM Yachts vessel. Additionally, the 35z can travel up to 304 nautical miles on its 250-gallon fuel tank.

The 35z has a flush-deck layout and to port is space for an electric grill, a baitwell, a sink, an ice maker and a fridge. There are two Stidd helm seats—one for the helmsman and the other for a copilot—that rotate to face the rest of the seating aft. In the cabin is V-shaped seating forward that can be converted to a berth.

Owners also have the option of adding a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and a full-length Bimini top to shade the cockpit.

Greenline 39

Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. Owners have the option of replacing the standard engine with a 370 hp Yanmar 8LV diesel.

Belowdecks, scissor berths provide accommodations for long weekends.

This year will be a big one for new cruise ships, with three major vessels on the way that promise to break new ground in cruising.

The most notable of the three, Icon of the Seas , is the first of a new series of megaships from Royal Caribbean that will be larger than any cruise vessels ever built. It'll be loaded with all sorts of gee-whiz attractions, restaurants, bars and entertainment.

Icon of the Seas is just one of two major new Royal Caribbean cruise ships arriving in 2024. Also on the way is Utopia of the Seas , the sixth and final vessel in the line's hugely successful Oasis Class of ships.

The year will also bring the first new ship in more than a decade from storied cruise line Cunard (Queen Anne) and the first of a new class of ship from cruise giant Princess Cruises (Sun Princess).

The new ships from Cunard and Princess Cruises will both feature notable updated designs for the brands, with an expanded lineup of restaurants, bars and entertainment areas.

All three vessels — Icon of the Seas, Queen Anne and Sun Princess — are the three new cruise ships for 2024 that have us the most excited here at TPG. But they're far from being the only major new cruise vessels arriving during the next 12 months.

To whet your appetite for cruising in the year ahead, take a look at our list of nine new cruise ships arriving in 2024.

Carnival Jubilee

Maiden voyage: Dec. 23, 2023

This newest ship for cruise giant Carnival technically arrived at the end of 2023, but its maiden voyage on Dec. 23 was so close to the start of 2024 that we're calling it a new vessel for 2024.

The 15-deck-high ship is a sister to the line's recently unveiled Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration , which have made waves in the past two years for their huge size and what might be the most unusual attraction ever on a cruise vessel: a deck-top roller coaster .

Like Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee measures 183,521 tons, putting it in a tie with the former ship for the position of biggest vessel ever to sail for Carnival (at 181,808 tons, sister ship Mardi Gras is slightly smaller). Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras, notably, are a whopping 35% bigger than the next-biggest Carnival ships currently afloat, and they are bigger than all but a dozen other cruise vessels in the world.

Like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee has a roller coaster on its top deck. Dubbed Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster, it's similar to the roller coasters on its sister vessels, with an 800-foot-long track and vehicles that reach speeds of 40 mph — give or take.

Also, like its sisters, Carnival Jubilee was designed to hold up to 6,630 passengers. That's just a tad below the 7,600 passengers that will be able to fit aboard Royal Caribbean's soon-to-debut Icon of the Seas — the new world's largest cruise ship (more on that vessel below).

In addition to a roller coaster, Carnival Jubilee has a giant water park on its top deck. Like its sister, its interiors are filled with a far broader array of suites than you'd find on earlier Carnival ships. But the vessel isn't a carbon copy of the previous vessels. New features include two ocean-themed zones with new bar and dining options — including an underwater-themed bar adorned with octopus arms that will serve drinks.

The development of ships on the scale of Carnival Jubilee and its sisters has been a big deal for Carnival. Until recently, the line had resisted the trend among major brands to build even bigger vessels that offer a supersized megaresort-at-sea experience.

Carnival's last new vessel before the arrival of Mardi Gras in 2021, Carnival Panorama, didn't even crack the top 40 list of biggest ships when it debuted in 2019.

Carnival Jubilee is sailing seven-night voyages to the Western Caribbean out of Galveston. Fares start at $669 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Icon of the Seas

Maiden voyage: Jan. 27

Call it the new grande dame of the megaship world. At 250,800 tons, Icon of the Seas will be the biggest cruise ship ever built, and it'll be chock-full of more amusements, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues than any cruise vessel ever.

In other words, if you're a megaship fan, this is your new go-to ship — assuming you don't mind vacationing with a lot of other people.

In size, Icon of the Seas will be about 6% bigger than the biggest of the Oasis Class ships, the one-year-old Wonder of the Seas. But it'll be able to hold about 7% more people — 7,600 passengers as compared to Wonder of the Seas' total capacity of 7,084 passengers. That's a new all-time record for a passenger ship.

The bigger passenger capacity is in part due to the ship's greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas is being built with more cabins offering extra bunks to accommodate families with children. It'll also have more amenities geared to families, including a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

Surfside notably will feature splash areas for babies and kids, pools and lounge spaces for parents, family-friendly eateries and shops, and a bar with "mommy and me" matching mocktails for kids and cocktails for grownups.

Icon of the Seas will also feature the largest water park ever built on a cruise ship, with a record six waterslides. No other vessel comes close when it comes to water attractions on a cruise ship.

Other notable new attractions will include the AquaDome — a massive, glass dome-covered area at the front of the ship. A true engineering marvel (the 363-ton glass dome had to be built separately next to the ship and winched into place), the AquaDome will be home to the AquaTheater — a venue found in a different location on Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class ships that hosts acrobatic and diving shows in a high-tech stage/pool.

The AquaTheater will be the marquee attraction within the AquaDome, which will also offer dining and drinking venues, as well as cozy seating areas for daytime and evening hangouts. One such spot, the Overlook, is an elevated lounge featuring special nooks (Overlook Pods) and wraparound windows providing fantastic ocean views and easy viewing of the aqua shows.

In addition, Icon of the Seas will have a record-for-a-ship seven pools, four of which will be at a main pool area called Chill Island. The latter area will be home to the line's first swim-up bar on a ship, Swim and Tonic.

Ten new food outlets on the ship will include Surfside Eatery, a family-friendly buffet in the Surfside neighborhood, and Empire Supper Club, an upscale venue designed to evoke the atmosphere of New York City in the 1930s. The latter will serve an extravagant eight-course meal (think: caviar and wagyu), with each dish paired with a cocktail created by celebrity mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim.

Among lodging options, Icon of the Seas will boast 14 new cabin and suite types plus 14 categories of rooms that already exist on earlier Royal Caribbean ships. That's a whopping 28 types of accommodation in all.

Many of these cabin categories are family-friendly rooms that sleep four guests; some can accommodate six or eight guests. In total, 313 cabins and suites are listed specifically as family-focused accommodations, though many regular room types can sleep more than two people.

Note that Icon of the Seas is just the first of three sister ships Royal Caribbean has on order for delivery by 2026, all of similar dimensions. Together, they will make up what is known as the Icon Class.

Icon of the Seas will operate seven-night voyages to the Caribbean out of Miami. Fares start at $1,577 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Sun Princess

Like Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises is going bigger with its next new ship — a lot bigger.

Under development for more than six years and the first of an all-new series of vessels for the line, the 4,000-passenger Sun Princess is about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet. And yet, while it's 21% bigger, it's designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio will be greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.

Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess is finally getting serious about pampering its best customers.

In addition, Sun Princess will boast an innovative new type of "cabana cabin" along the ship's extra-wide 10th deck, which will come with access to a private deck area (sort of a riff on the Havana-class cabins found on a handful of Carnival Cruise Line ships). Plus, the top deck of the ship is getting some unusual-for-Princess sizzle with the addition of a glass-dome-topped pool area that will transform into a nightspot after the sun goes down.

Other notable differences between Sun Princess and earlier Princess ships include the lack of a buffet restaurant on its main pool deck. Don't worry, buffet lovers: There will still be a buffet-like venue on the ship. It will be eight decks below the pool deck, closer to the ship's central piazza and just off the ship's outside promenade.

The ship's main theater, to be called the Princess Arena, will also have a new look. Its new-for-Princess in-the-round shape can be converted into a more traditional proscenium-type theater or a keyhole-type theater to allow for different types of productions.

The ship's three-deck-high piazza, called the Sun Princess Piazza, is getting an upgrade, too, with a new circular shape, a stage that pops up from the center of the floor for performances and a giant, three-deck-high moveable LED screen that will play a role in evening productions in the space.

Among other standout venues, Sun Princess will feature a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles. Kids should love the new-for-Princess fun zone called Park19, featuring a ropes course and what's being billed as the first roll glider at sea, an electric ride that goes up to 11 mph.

Sun Princess initially will sail in Europe through the fall before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $467 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a five-night Caribbean sailing.

Maiden voyage: May 10

It's been a long time coming, but storied cruise line Cunard is finally launching a new ship. Built to an all-new design for the 183-year-old brand, the 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will be Cunard's first new vessel in 14 years — an unusually long period for any line to go without a new ship.

Queen Anne, notably, will embrace the latest trends of travel and cruising in a way that Cunard ships haven't done before, including a new focus on choice in dining and entertainment, wellness and onboard celebrations.

The ship will offer 15 different places to grab a bite, more than double the number on the line's other ships. The options will include Aji Wa, a new restaurant concept for Cunard that will serve Japanese cuisine influenced by the seasons of the year. Also new for Cunard will be Aranya, an Indian eatery; Sir Samuel's, a high-end steakhouse; and Tramonto, which will serve Mediterranean dishes.

Wellness-focused areas will include a new-for-the-line, glass-enclosed Wellness Studio at the top of the ship that will offer classes in yoga, pilates, Zumba and line dancing during the day and ballroom dancing classes at sunset.

A new juice bar and a cafe near the main pool will serve healthy dishes, and the ship's spa is being built as a temple to wellness. It'll offer a sprawling thermal pool complex that includes eight heated loungers, four experiential showers, a reflexology footpath with textured stones flowing with hot water, a cold room (a first for Cunard), a large steam room, a Himalayan salt sauna and a traditional sauna. A relaxation room and wellness suite will round out the offerings.

On the celebrations front, Queen Anne will have a lounge specifically designed for weddings that spills into an indoor reception room and, just beyond, a new-for-the-line private rooftop terrace space for wedding and vow renewal receptions.

Other notable features of the ship will include an expanded Commodore Club observation lounge and a main pool area (The Pavilion) topped with a retractable glass roof designed to be as much a showpiece as a functional structure.

Not everything about Queen Anne will be different from previous Cunard ships. A lot will be familiar. As is always the case for Cunard vessels, Queen Anne will have a soaring Grand Lobby with a cascading staircase where you can take selfies in your formal night splendor. That staple of all Cunard ships, the ballroom known as the Queens Room, is also making a comeback.

Queen Anne initially will sail in Europe before setting off on an around-the-world cruise in January 2025. Fares start at $449 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a quick two-night cruise from Hamburg, Germany, to Southampton, England. Seven-night sailings in Europe start at $849 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Maiden voyage: June 27

The newest ship for the luxury line Silversea Cruises is a sister to the brand's recently unveiled Silver Nova — a groundbreaking vessel that has been turning heads since it debuted in August.

Like Silver Nova, Silver Ray will be bigger than Silversea's previous ships and feature an unusual, asymmetrical design for its public decks that reorients its key features toward the sides of the ship instead of the center. Whether you're floating in the ship's main pool or dining at its open-air Marquee restaurant, you'll be looking out at the sea (or whatever destination the ship is visiting) like you've never been able to before.

Silver Ray's pool area, in particular, will be striking, as is the pool area on Silver Nova. The long and narrow pool won't be in the middle of the deck but offset to its starboard side, and it'll be oriented to face outward to the sea. Nearly all the lounge chairs around the pool will face in the same direction toward the sea, too.

As we wrote about in our recent first look at Silver Nova , part of what makes this new outward-facing orientation for these ships so magical is that they don't have any structures rising from the starboard sides of their pool decks. Passengers floating in the pools on these ships or lounging on nearby lounge chairs get an unobstructed view of the sea off the starboard side.

Silver Ray's asymmetrical design will also be evident at two food and beverage venues at the top of the vessel — both new-for-Silversea concepts that first debuted in August on Silver Nova.

The first, Marquee, will be an alfresco dining venue that is also off-center, with an orientation that offers commanding views of the sea from the ship's port side. It'll be home to The Grill, Silversea's signature outdoor "hot rocks" dining venue, and also double as the ship's Spaccanapoli pizza outlet. The second venue, The Dusk Bar, will be an open-air sky bar at the back of the vessel that, like Marquee, is positioned on the port side of the ship.

Additional dining venues on board will include versions of Silversea's main signature restaurant La Terrazza, French eatery La Dame, seafood eatery Atlantide and sushi outlet Kaiseki.

In addition to asymmetry in many areas, one thing that will be particularly noticeable about Silver Ray is its spaciousness — something it will share with Silver Nova. At 54,700 tons, the two ships are about 34% bigger than Silversea's last three new vessels — Silver Muse, Silver Moon and Silver Dawn — but they are designed to hold only about 22% more passengers. That gives them significantly more space per passenger.

With every berth filled, Silver Ray will sail with 728 passengers — the same as Silver Nova and just 132 more than the three earlier Silversea vessels.

The extra space on the two vessels has allowed Silversea to expand its lineup of cabin categories, with more large suites. As is always the case with Silversea ships, every cabin on the ship will be a suite. But Silver Ray and Silver Nova offer new premium aft suites, including a massive 1,324-square-foot complex called the Otium Suite.

Even the smallest cabins on Silver Ray will measure at least 357 square feet, which is unusually large for a cruise ship cabin.

Silver Ray will initially sail in Europe before repositioning to North America in December 2024 for winter sailings to South America and the Caribbean. Fares start at $4,600 per person, including transfers, for a nine-night South America sailing out of Panama City.

Utopia of the Seas

Maiden voyage: July 22

Royal Caribbean's second new ship of the year will be a giant, too, though not quite as big as Icon of the Seas. The sixth and final vessel in the line's groundbreaking Oasis Class of ships , Utopia of the Seas is expected to carry up to around 6,700 passengers and measure around 237,000 tons, which would place it just behind Icon of the Seas as the world's second-biggest cruise ship.

Like the five earlier Oasis Class ships (the newest of which, Wonder of the Seas , is the current size leader in the cruise world), Utopia of the Seas will be loaded with lots of family-focused attractions , including multiple main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on its top deck.

Inside the vessel, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine, plus a huge casino, spas and theaters with Broadway-style shows.

As with earlier Royal Caribbean ships, it'll even have an indoor ice-skating rink.

In design and features, Utopia of the Seas will be nearly identical to Royal Caribbean's last new Oasis Class ship, Wonder of the Seas, which debuted in 2022. Like that vessel, it'll have a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, restaurant and sun deck — something not found on the four earlier Oasis Class ships.

Utopia of the Seas will be based in Port Canaveral, Florida, for short three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. Fares start at $431 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a three-night sailing.

The world's newest cruise line, three-month-old Explora Journeys, is doubling in size in 2024 with the addition of Explora 2.

Designed for 922 passengers, the high-end vessel will be an almost identical sister to Explora 1, the line's first ship, which debuted in August. It will similarly target the luxury market.

Like Explora 1, the new ship will offer oceanfront suites, penthouses and residences designed to be "homes at sea," and it'll be packed with upscale amenities. They will include 10 distinct culinary experiences, 10 indoor and outdoor bars and lounges, four swimming pools, outdoor deck areas with private cabanas, wellness facilities and entertainment.

A creation of the deep-pocketed MSC Group, which already owns MSC Cruises, Explora Journeys plans to launch at least six of the superluxurious vessels by 2028, with the first four being roughly the same size and the last two being even bigger .

In just a few years, that'll give Explora Journeys a bigger capacity than such well-known luxury cruise operators as Seabourn and the recently relaunched Crystal .

Explora Journeys is competing in the same upscale cruise space as Seabourn and Crystal, as well as luxury lines like Viking, Silversea and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. It's run completely separately from its sister brand, MSC Cruises, which caters to a mass-market audience.

Explora 2 will initially sail in the Mediterranean before repositioning to North America for the winter. Fares start at $4,275 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing.

Viking Vela

Maiden voyage: Dec. 19

Fast-growing Viking will continue its expansion into ocean cruising in 2024 with its 11th new seagoing vessel since 2015.

Like Viking's first 10 ocean ships (one of which has been transferred to a joint venture with a Chinese company), Vela will be a relatively small, elegant vessel designed to appeal to an older crowd looking to explore the world in style and comfort.

Slightly bigger than its sister ships, Viking Vela will hold 998 passengers at double occupancy — 68 more than its siblings. But it'll still be less than a third the size of the giant ships operated by such well-known cruise brands as Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Like Viking's other ocean ships, it'll sail itineraries that feature more time in ports than is common at many other lines. Like the earlier Viking ships, it'll also be adults-only, with no passengers under the age of 18 allowed.

While slightly bigger than earlier Viking ocean ships, Viking Vela's interior will have an almost identical look. Like Viking's 10 earlier ocean vessels, Vela will boast modern, Scandinavian-influenced decor that's soothing and upscale. Onboard activities will revolve around enrichment programs and classy entertainment, and there will be elegant meals in multiple restaurants. Cabins will be relatively spacious, with the smallest of five cabin categories having 270 square feet of space. Every cabin will have a balcony.

As is typical for Viking, the fare will include a shore excursion at every port that Vela visits. Also included will be Wi-Fi, and wine and beer with lunch and dinner — all part of Viking's "no-nickel-and-diming" philosophy.

Disney Treasure

Maiden voyage: Dec. 21

Disney Cruise Line is shifting into growth mode again with the unveiling of Disney Treasure , its second new ship in two years (after a 10-year period where Disney didn't unveil a single vessel). Due at the end of 2024, it's coming out in relatively quick succession to Disney Wish, a similarly designed ship that arrived in 2022.

Like Disney Wish, Disney Treasure is part of Disney's new Triton Class of vessels, and it'll share many of the same features and layout as its older sister. But it will be far from an exact copy. Disney has announced quite a few major changes for Disney Treasure, including the addition of an all-new Mexican restaurant called Plaza de Coco that is themed around the events of the "Coco" movie. It replaces the "Frozen-" themed eatery on Disney Wish.

Also, a new Haunted Mansion-themed bar will replace the "Star Wars-" themed Hyperspace Lounge on Disney Wish.

Other new venues include Jumbeaux's Sweets, an ice cream parlor and candy shop inspired by Jumbeaux's Cafe in the movie "Zootopia," and Skipper Society, a new bar inspired by Disney's Jungle Cruise ride and its wisecracking skippers. At the latter, which will be where The Bayou is on Disney Wish, passengers will find a menu of themed cocktails and light snacks, such as waffles.

Yet another new drinks venue is Periscope Pub, inspired by Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (and Disney's 1954 movie version of the book and theme park attraction). It will replace Wish's Keg & Compass as Disney Treasure's sports bar. The bar is designed to look like the Nautilus submarine from the story, complete with a giant periscope, porthole windows and a ceiling designed to look like you're underwater.

Disney is also launching a new Broadway-style musical on Disney Treasure, "Disney The Tale of Moana." The show will feature popular songs and characters from the animated movie and marks the first time Disney has brought the story of Moana to the stage.

The ship's two other main shows, "Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure," are repeats from earlier Disney ships.

Like Disney Wish, Disney Treasure's big top-deck attraction will be AquaMouse, a water ride that swirls around the top of the vessel.

The ship will hold 2,500 passengers at double occupancy (two passengers per cabin) and up to 4,000 passengers with every berth filled.

Disney Treasure will sail seven-night voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas out of Port Canaveral. Fares start at $1,862 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Other new ships

In addition to the above, newcomers for 2024 include several small oceangoing cruise vessels from such small-ship cruise operators as The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and American Cruise Lines , as well as small river ships from river lines AmaWaterways , Avalon Waterways and Viking .

Among the most notable of these smaller vessels is the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena, which is being billed as the first major river ship designed to sail on the Magdalena River in Colombia. Avalon's new entry for 2024, the 102-passenger Avalon Alegria, will be that line's first vessel on the Douro River in Portugal.
