The best cruise lines in the world: 2023 Readers' Choice Awards

By Condé Nast Traveller

Viking River Cruises

The survey for the 2024 Readers' Choice Awards is open, vote now for your favourite places, hotels, airports, cruise lines, travel fixers and more.

Cruises are booming right now, buoyed partly by the popularity of domestic seacations that hauled in first-time sailors. So much so that Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ 34,000-mile world trip for 2024 sold out in just over two hours, while the adults-only Virgin Voyages, which aims to throw cruise stereotypes overboard, rose to first place in Large Ships. And we’ve brought back last year's new category showcasing the expedition cruises – small, often sustainable vessels with a shoal of scientific experts onboard – that follow in the wake of adventurers such as Sir Ernest Shackleton.

These are the best cruise lines in the world, according to the 2023 Readers' Choice Awards .

U.S. News Announces the 2022 Best Cruise Lines

U.S. News Announces Best Cruise Lines

Washington, D.C. – U.S. News & World Report, publisher of Best Hotels , Best Vacations and Best Travel Rewards Programs , today announced the 2022 Best Cruise Lines rankings , designed to provide up-to-date information on the leading cruise lines.

With much of the world reopening to international travel, U.S. News surveyed travelers to understand the effects of COVID-19 on cruiser sentiments. U.S. News unveiled the survey results at the Seatrade Global Conference in October which found that cruisers – both first-time and longtime – are booked at higher levels than before the pandemic. U.S. News survey data also revealed that of the frequent travelers who indicated that they would cruise again, 20% are already signed up for their next sailing.

"Though most avenues of travel have been impacted throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the cruise industry has seen the most challenges," said Nicola Wood, travel editor at U.S. News. "U.S. News is excited to once again highlight the leading cruise lines and provide in-depth information on ships, onboard activities and itineraries to travelers looking to research and book a cruise vacation."

Celebrity Cruises takes the No. 1 spot as the Best Cruise Line for the Money . Viking Ocean Cruises is the No. 1 Best Cruise Line for Couples and Best Luxury Cruise Line thanks to its adult-focused environment and luxurious and romantic amenities, such as fireplaces in each ship's common area and private verandas in every stateroom.

Disney Cruise Line, which offers ships tailored specifically to children and families, has remained the No. 1 Best Cruise Line for Families since U.S. News began ranking cruise lines. Additionally, for the eighth consecutive year, Disney is also the No. 1 Best Cruise Line in the Caribbean . Viking Ocean Cruises takes the spot of No. 1 Best Cruise Line in the Mediterranean for 2022.

The rankings help travelers select the best cruise by brand, region, traveler type and budget. This year's rankings are accompanied by an editorial rundown of the most popular river cruise lines for those looking for guidance on a different type of cruise that still offers itineraries with multiple destinations.

The methodology for the Best Cruise Lines rankings factors in expert evaluations of cruise ship quality, reputation among travelers, results from health assessments conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other factors, such as price class and itinerary offerings.

best cruise line in the world 2022

If your dream vacation includes leaving the logistics to others and being transported from destination to destination while enjoying scrumptious meals, exciting entertainment, and gorgeous panoramic views, a cruise may be in your future. From all-inclusive, luxury accommodations to budget-friendly State-side excursions, you need only pick the journey that best suits you.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the thought of planning a cruise? Consider one of these 10 great options, handpicked by our readers as their favorites. From small-ship to mega-ship, and everything in between, these are our readers’ 2022 picks for favorite overall cruise line.

Viking Cruise canal boat on the Danube in Budapest.

1. Viking (Winner)

Viking is well-known — and beloved — in the river cruise market. But did you know they also offer small ship ocean cruises as well as intimate expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic? All in all, Viking’s fleet of around 80 ships is ready to help you explore the world in comfort, no matter where your wanderlust wants to take you.

Viking put river cruising on the map for many travelers, perfecting the process from beginning to end, especially across Europe. Enjoy luxury accommodations as you float down the Danube, Rhine, Douro, and Elbe rivers among other European waterways. Their services have expanded to include cruises along the Nile, Mississippi, and Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Viking ships do not include casinos and do not allow children under 18 onboard, as they seek to create an inviting atmosphere for sharing meaningful experiences with their guests, free from distraction. What is more, Wi-Fi and alcohol come included in your ticket, so once you purchase your ticket, just sit back and enjoy the experience.

View of the pool deck on a Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship.

2. Royal Caribbean

The name alone should tell you that you will be treated like royalty while on board. Set sail around the Caribbean on a classic Royal Caribbean journey with a stop at their privately owned island oasis in the Bahamas: CocoCay. Spend the day on dry land — or in the water — enjoying the thrills of the water slides, zip lines, cabanas, and the largest fresh-water pool in the Bahamas. This is one cruise line that knows how to do a Caribbean cruise right.

That said, the cruise line’s fleet of over 25 ships don’t stay only in the Caribbean. With Royal Caribbean, you can experience the beauty of the Mediterranean, the gorgeous glaciers of Alaska, the many islands of the South Pacific, or even embark on a nine-month-long trip of a lifetime, visiting over 60 countries and each of the seven continents.

Dining, beverage, and Wi-Fi packages can be purchased in addition to your fare to enhance your experience while limiting the cost of daily incidentals. And it is always helpful to book shore excursions through the cruise ship as well; the boat won’t wait for guests who arrive back late from personally curated off-ship activities. Keep this in mind so you don’t miss the boat!

Norwegian Jewel along the Kamchatka Peninsula in Avacha Bay.

3. Norwegian Cruise Line

Like their competitor in the number two spot, Norwegian has grown past the destination in its name. Norwegian Cruise Line will take you everywhere from Norway to the Panama Canal, Africa to Australia. Set sail for a weekend or three weeks, the choice is yours. Determine where you want to go, and what you want to experience, and then choose the cruise that best fits your desires.

If you decide on a Caribbean cruise, be sure to enjoy a day at Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, a 268-acre island paradise solely for guests of Norwegian Cruise Line. Here you will enjoy private beaches covered in white sand, experience native wildlife, and have ample opportunities to enjoy the water up close.

Disney Cruise Line off the coast of tropical island.

4. Disney Cruise Line

The magic of a Disney Cruise cannot be overstated as the customer experience has always been at the heart of the Disney business model. The moment you step on board, your childhood dreams begin to become reality. Dine alongside your favorite Disney Princess, experience a Broadway-worthy musical experience, or enjoy the thrill of an onboard water coaster.

Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island oasis for Bahamian and Caribbean cruise passengers to enjoy. Go snorkeling in the lagoon while watching out for a hidden Mickey, experience the Pelican Plunge water-play area, or sneak off to Serenity Bay, an adults-only oasis for when you need a break from the excited youngsters scurrying about.

Consider a Disney cruise to Alaska or Canada, enjoy the brisk waters of the Baltic in northern Europe, or enjoy a cruise around the British Isles. No matter the destination, Disney’s staff will ensure you are entertained and leave the ship with a return trip already being planned in your head.

Holland America Line vessel sailing into Ketchikan, Alaska on a hazy evening at sunset.

5. Holland America

Holland America has been sailing the seven seas for almost 145 years. Enjoy South America, New England, Mexico, or a classic cruise through the Caribbean or Mediterranean aboard one of Holland America’s 11 elegant ships. With staterooms ranging in size from 150 square feet to Pinnacle Suites with nearly 1,300 square feet of living space, you will find a room to fit your group, and your budget.

Having trouble deciding on the perfect Holland America itinerary? Work with a personal cruise consultant to help you navigate the uncertain waters and nail down a plan that is perfect for you and your family.

Royal Princess docked in Curaco.

6. Princess Cruises

The Princess Cruise fleet includes 14 large-ship vessels, ready to take you just about anywhere you want to go. Enjoy a three-week-long cruise from Sydney to Hong Kong, a month-long trans-Pacific journey from LA to Sydney with stops in Hawaii and the South Pacific, or a more traditional week-long trip around Alaska or the Caribbean.

Entertainment includes Broadway-worthy productions, magic shows, and comedians. Enjoy a hand crafted cocktail and indulge in the many dining options available onboard, many of which come included in your fare — even some fine dining!

That said, they also have a sub-fleet of small-ship vessels dedicated to the Galapagos that provide a more intimate experience for enjoying this natural paradise. From the 16-person Xploration to the 100-person Flora , enjoy the beauty of Darwin’s Galapagos up close with Celebrity.

Outdoor dining aboard the Silver Spirit.

Guest capacity on their 11-ship fleet ranges from just 100 aboard the Silver Origin of the Galapagos to 728 on their newest ship, the Silver Nova .

Silversea cruises touch all seven continents, with ports in over 900 locations. Spend up to 140 days at sea — or as few as five. The luxury begins as soon as you leave your home, with a chauffeured ride from your home to the airport as part of the Silversea experience.

P&O Oceania anchored near Santorini, Greece.

9. Oceania Cruises

Small ship luxury at its finest is what you will receive when you step on board one of Oceania’s ships. With four ships housing around 650 guests and two more that can hold just over 1,200, Oceania ships are built small to ensure the service you receive is top notch.

Sail through the Panama Canal, explore the sites around the Baltic Sea and Scandinavia, Or, for just over $50,000 per person, embark on a seven-month-long journey around the world. This Miami to New York trip will take you through the Panama Canal (twice) and down to Antarctica, and it includes stops in Europe, Africa, Asia, and all of the Americas.

Windstar cruise ship docked in St. Maarten.

10. Windstar Cruises

If you are looking for a more intimate cruise experience, Windstar Cruises is ready to set sail. There are six ships in their fleet, ranging from the 342-guest Wind Surf flagship sailing ship, down to the 148-guest Wind Star and Wind Spirit . If there is somewhere you want to cruise, there is a good chance that Windstar can get you there.

Yes, you can enjoy the Caribbean and Mediterranean, but have you considered a Black Sea cruise? Or how about a tour of the Holy Lands, Northern Europe, or the South Pacific? best cruise line in the world 2022

Norwegian Prima Arrow

Built in 2022, this is the first of six ships from the Prima Class, which is Norwegian’s first new class of ships in nearly ten years. As the youngest ship in a young fleet, there are many shiny—and innovative—bells and whistles throughout the Norwegian Prima , from a virtual reality arcade room to a three-tiered go-kart racing track. There are 1,586 total suites onboard—all rooms are decorated in a calm, neutral color palette with modern wall art and plenty of lights, plugs, and a large TV. The subtle decor lets the balcony view really shine. Some of my favorite parts of the ship could be lost amongst the flashier amenities—but shouldn’t be. Take a stroll along Ocean Boulevard, a walkway that wraps around the entire ship. Along the way, you can peer through viewfinders to spot birds and incoming ports, pass by the sculpture garden, and glide over the Oceanwalk: a glass walkway where you can observe the sea rolling beneath your feet. —Mercedes Bleth

best cruise line in the world 2022

Evrima — The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Arrow

The Ritz-Carlton’s foray into cruising melds small-ship (or mega-yacht, depending on your past sea experience) sailing with plenty of scenery options: The European Mediterranean routes range from springtime through fall in Europe (Turkey to the Canary Islands) to winter in the Caribbean (San Juan to St. Barts). The  Evrima is the first in a fleet of three ships emerging over the next few years, and an antidote to the water-slide-strapped mega-cruises of the world. Eight of the nine deck levels open to guests hold six restaurants, 149 suite-style cabins, two pools, a cigar humidor, six bars (the interior Living Room and top-floor alfresco Observation Deck, Mistral, The Bar, The Pool House, and The Marina Terrace), a fitness center, a beauty salon and spa deck, and a water-level marina terrace with water toys. Itineraries go deep on less-explored ports, like the small French village of Sanary-sur-Mer, though greatest hits like Bridgetown in Barbados can feature, too. The clear focus on cuisine, relaxation, and small entertainment offerings like live music trios and high tea is a page right out of the Ritz-Carlton playbook, making each sailing feel like a luxury hotel that just so happens to be floating in the ocean, with views on the blues drifting past—all suites here have balconies facing out to the ocean. Not an inward-facing room on site. —Shannon McMahon

The Restaurant Silver Endeavour

Silver Endeavour — Silversea Arrow

While sipping complimentary champagne in a solarium hot tub, ogle gentoo penguins standing single file atop a turquoise ice floe through two-story glass walls. One by one, they dive into Antarctic waters like some choreographed chorus line in 1930s flicks. Back in your sumptuous suite, celebrate that sighting with caviar, as a tux-clad white-gloved butler stirs a three-olive martini. Next up? A lavish lobster dinner, served here, there—well, everywhere. Just a typical day on the 200-passenger, polar-class expedition ship Silver Endeavour . The ultra-posh, all-inclusive vessel delivers unforgettable journeys; hop a chartered flight landing smackdab in Antarctica, for an adventure  before the adventure. Beyond the poles, the ship sails remote lands with a savvy, passionate expedition team leading the way. Expect private yacht-style service with a one-to-one passenger-crew ratio. Swim laps in the indoor heated swimming pool, and  absolutely  indulge in Otium spa’s 100-minute golden radiance facial and the flakiest teatime scones with double cream in Art’s Cafe.

best cruise line in the world 2022

World Traveller — Atlas Arrow

Fledgling cruise line Atlas Ocean Voyages has found a sweet spot in the market: an upscale expedition experience that incorporates traditional cruise elements, such as evening performances. But at its core, a trip to Antarctica on  World Traveller is an expedition, with landings on the icy continent and its islands, Zodiac cruises around icebergs and alongside porpoising penguins, and lectures by knowledgeable expedition staff. The onboard experience is yacht-like—not in the billionaire's contemporary megayacht sense, but in the traditional yacht sense, with wood paneling and blue-and-white upholstery throughout the interior. (Think midcentury New England or Italy, with a bit of prep and  la dolce vita panache.) This may sound unusual, but the standout feature onboard is a grab-and-go café called Paula's Pantry. On most expedition ships, light bites between meals are few and far between, but on  World Traveller , there's always a salad, panini, or fresh smoothie available—seasoned expedition cruisers will know that such on-demand light fare is a gift. Perhaps more expected highlights include the SeaSpa by L'Occitane and the L'Occitane products in the staterooms. —Stefanie Waldek

Seabourn Venture Arrow

With its yachtlike profile and forest-green hull, Seabourn’s first purpose-built expedition vessel cuts a stylish figure in the remote areas it’s designed to go to. Launched last July, the ship (along with sister Seabourn Pursuit, set to sail later this year) demonstrates the American luxury operator’s new interest in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and while the on-board entertaining has been scaled down for these smaller sailings, Seabourn’s signature pampering has not. Each of the 132 staterooms comes with a balcony, a walk-in closet, and a separate shower and tub, and even the 355-square-foot basic suites feel spacious—as does the ship itself, even at its full capacity of 264 passengers. The four bars, two full-service restaurants, abundant caviar, and various outposts for treats like sushi and fresh pastries make indulging easy. For creatures of comfort, this is the way to do an adventure cruise, especially because designer Adam Tihany’s faux-fur-accented interiors have the warm, natural vibe of an Aspen ski chalet, creating extra coziness among the Arctic elements. —Janice Wald Henderson

Sylvia Earle — Aurora Expeditions Arrow

If you’ve ever dreamed about skiing, scuba diving, or mountaineering in Antarctica or the Arctic, book a trip on Aurora Expedition’s Sylvia Earle. The 132-passenger expedition ship, dedicated to the famed marine biologist with whom it shares a name, is an upscale home base for extreme outdoor activities. Aurora was founded some three decades ago by intrepid mountaineer Greg Mortimer, so it should come as little surprise that Aurora is all about dynamic adventure led by highly experienced guides—many of whom hold doctorates, have scaled the world’s highest peaks, or have paddled rivers and seas in the world’s most remote regions. But while in the past, such expeditions were relegated to bare-bones accommodations on no-frills former research ships, a voyage on Sylvia Earle is all about creature comforts, from outdoor hot tubs to onboard restaurants and bars. The ship’s bow is even designed to minimize the effects of rough seas for smoother passage. What’s more, this is a ship that honors women—each deck is named after a pioneering female in the marine sciences. —Stefanie Waldek

Valiant Lady — Virgin Voyages Arrow

During summer, the second ship in Sir Richard Branson’s hip cruise line charts a route from Barcelona to Ibiza via lesser-known ports such as Carrara, Italy, where the marble shines as it did when Michelangelo sourced the slab that became David (in winter the ship hits the Caribbean). Virgin is all about disrupting the status quo, and the aim here is to attract the sort of passenger who wouldn’t normally consider a cruise. Does it succeed? Yes. On the inaugural voyage, the passengers were as diverse as the crew, drawn by drag queen performances and all-inclusive menus from restaurants that include a mezcal bar, a test kitchen, and a Korean barbecue joint. Peer beyond the on-brand red to encounter moments of genuinely outstanding design, such as the Roman and Williams–designed Wake Restaurant. This is a real showstopper. —Rick Jordan

best new cruises in the world winner Viking osiris

Viking Osiris Arrow

Sailing with just 82 passengers and replete with sophisticated Scandinavian design elements, Viking Osiris has the look and feel of a boutique hotel on the Nile. Cozy up with a coffee in the airy two-story atrium at the heart of the ship—a rarity for river vessels—and watch lush scenery like date palms and mango groves pass by the floor-to-ceiling windows. Elsewhere on board are brand-favorite amenities like the Aquavit Terrace and Sun Deck, where travelers can grab a quick bite alfresco in the elegant-yet-unfussy atmosphere for which the line is beloved. Throughout the ship are rare photographs of George Herbert, Lord Carnarvon—the benefactor of the archaeological dig that unearthed Tutankhamen’s tomb in the 1920s. The photos show Lord Carnarvon at work in the Valley of the Kings and evoke a strong sense of place. Purpose-built for the Nile, Viking Osiris sails to well-known highlights of the region like the Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple, and the city of Aswan, as well as smaller riverside villages like Qena and Esna. After a long day exploring ancient sites in the Saharan sun, expect to be greeted by cheerful staff with cool hand towels and hand-squeezed juice. Once you’re feeling refreshed, head to the ship’s aft with a cocktail to laze by the plunge pool and watch the sunset or simply retire to your stateroom’s private veranda to enjoy the sound of the river gently lapping below.   —Jessica Puckett

MSC World Europa Arrow

The newest mega-ship at sea,  MSC World Europa  is the largest vessel in the fleet of European cruise line MSC, capable of housing nearly 7,000 guests. As you would expect from a ship of this size, the range of onboard amenities is vast, from 33 restaurants and bars to 14 hot tubs and the world’s tallest dry slide at sea. Highlights include those dining venues—particularly the Chef’s Garden Kitchen, where in-restaurant hydroponic gardens provide microgreens for the dishes, and the onboard brewery that makes beer with seawater—as well as the thermal circuit in the Aurea Spa, which includes a snow room and a salt cave.  MSC World Europa is also the fleet’s first ship to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), a fuel that emits less carbon than other fossil fuels, as well as a testing ground for a new, more efficient fuel cell—ultimately, these measures are part of MSC’s quest to become carbon neutral by 2050. —Stefanie Waldek

Star Pride — Windstar Cruises Arrow

When this all-suite ship was renovated in 2022, it was stretched to add new restaurants, a larger, refreshed spa, and refurbished staterooms. But with just 312 passengers, the new Star Pride still feels intimate enough to be categorized as a yacht. In fact, the compact ship is able to squeeze into smaller, less busy ports and through scenic waterways, like Greece’s Corinth Canal, that are typically reserved for those with private vessels. During your sailing, expect perks you’d otherwise find only on charter yachts, too, like a swim platform that unfurls on certain anchorings. Take out a paddleboard or simply take a dip in the sea. In larger ports, you’ll want to try Windstar’s Shop with the Chef shore excursion, which allows a small group of passengers to accompany the yacht’s culinary team to local markets, where they source provisions for that night’s dinner service. Local market picks notwithstanding, you won’t be left wanting for a good meal aboard Star Pride. The yacht has four restaurants, but the standout is Cuadro 44, its new Spanish tapas dining concept. Sit at the bar and watch the chefs prepare dishes like charred octopus, patatas bravas, paella croquetas, and grilled chorizo and pass them directly to your plate. —Jessica Puckett

cruise ship spa lounge

Silver Dawn — Silversea Arrow

A plush robe and slippers are status symbols for the passengers gliding aboard the Silver Dawn . After all, this is one of Silversea’s three ships with Otium, the line’s newly imagined wellness concept, which weaves tranquil moments into the entire onboard experience, even beyond its smashing new spa with Roman-style baths. In the rooms, guests can sink into a fig-and-cedar-scented aromatherapy bath as Bach plays softly in the background and candles flicker. Peckish? Your tux-clad magic maker can score you spa-menu favorites, like lobster brioche or truffled popcorn. Culinary venues popular on other Silversea ships—like S.A.L.T. Kitchen and upscale French La Dame—have been expanded here. Coupled with foodie-focused shore excursions that whisk you to beloved local hangouts, they make this vessel a luxury-ship game changer. —Janice Wald-Henderson

The Top Cruise Lines In The World: 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards

Our annual Readers’ Choice Awards, now in their 35th year, continue to highlight the travel experiences that our readers adore most, from hotels and airlines to cruises and islands. Also included are eulogies for the locations that draw you back, reflections on cherished cities, and more.

The statistics confirm what we previously knew: Over a quarter of a million of you who responded to this year’s study show that there has never been more enthusiasm for travel. This year’s list, which includes several newcomers to take into consideration, is a monument to the endurance of longtime favorites, from the top large U.S. city to the top foreign airline. Think of it as a primer on where and how to sail next. The greatest cruise companies and ships in the world , as chosen by Traveler readers, are listed below.

Large ships (More than 4,000 passengers)

3. Norwegian Cruise Line, a mega ship operator

Norwegian Cruise Line , known for its vibrant ships, entered the mega-ship market in 2010 with the introduction of Norwegian Epic, which can accommodate just over 5,000 passengers at full occupancy. Since then, the company has introduced five additional ships in the Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus classes. Although the cruise line’s newest ship, Norwegian Bliss , has a distinctly more mature atmosphere, families frequently board these ships, which primarily sail in North America, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. Families take advantage of amenities like waterparks, virtual reality gaming, and go-kart racing. The newest and most opulent of its mega-ships, Norwegian Prima, was introduced to the public in August 2022.

2. The megaship operator MSC Cruises

Despite having its headquarters in the landlocked country of Switzerland, MSC has mastered the art of building mega-ships, having constructed five of the world’s fifteen largest vessels: the MSC Grandiosa, MSC Bellissima, MSC Meraviglia , MSC Virtuosa, and MSC Seashore. Each has a maximum capacity of 5,300 to 6,300 passengers. The newest of the five ships is MSC Seashore, which has a New York City motif. With a length of 1,100 feet, it is the longest ship in the line and can accommodate more than 140,000 square feet of outdoor area as well as 7,500 square feet of kid-specific space, including the Pirates Cove Aquapark. In addition to the 5,100-passenger MSC Seascape and the 4,800-passenger MSC Euribia, MSC has four World-class mega-ships with a capacity between 5,800 and 6,850 people in the works.

1. Royal Caribbean International is a megaship line.

Given that it operates the four largest cruise ships in the world, Royal Caribbean is the cruise line for you if you want to really feel like you’re residing in a floating metropolis. In terms of passenger count (about 6,700 at full capacity), length (almost 1,200 feet long), and gross tonnage, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas are at the top of the list (more than 225,000 tonnes). Given their size, these ships offer every amenity you can imagine—and plenty more you can’t—from waterparks to world-class musical shows to autonomous bars manned by robots to double-decker suites with slides for the kids. They also have autonomous bars that serve themselves. Throughout the year, you can find these enormous ships cruising the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, but with so much to do on board, you might not even want to get off the ship.

Big Ships (2,500 to 4,000 passengers)

10. Royal Caribbean International is a significant ship line.

The 3,100-passenger Voyager-class ships, for example, were previously the largest ships in the world before Royal Caribbean introduced the larger Freedom class and then the Oasis class. Despite the fact that Royal Caribbean is likely best known for its mega-ships, it also has quite a few huge ships. Each class boasted a unique set of firsts: Freedom of the Seas debuted the first FlowRider surf simulator at sea, while Voyager of the Seas was the first ship to offer an ice rink and a rock climbing wall.

9. Carnival Cruise Line, a major ship operator

Carnival Cruise Lines focuses on providing quality family entertainment at a reasonable cost. With 25 ships that travel between North America and Europe with a passenger capacity of between 2,500 and 3,900, it is the largest cruise line in the world in terms of both fleet size and yearly passenger volume (more than five million). With water slides, ropes courses, mini golf, and attractions like SkyRide, where visitors pedal a hanging vehicle along a suspended track, Carnival is well renowned for its entertaining upper decks that resemble an entertainment park at sea.

8. MSC Cruises, a major cruise line

The Musica and Fantasia class ships make up about half of MSC’s fleet, and most of its more recent additions have a strong “larger is better” philosophy. Although they do offer itineraries through North and South America, Asia, and Northern Europe, the eight huge ships primarily travel in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. The family-friendly ships tend to be more luxurious and are well-known for drawing tourists from around the world .

7. Princess Cruises , a line with large ships

Princess Cruises , a member of the Carnival group, has a cute claim to fame: the old Pacific Princess ship served as the setting for the television programme The Love Boat. You’re in luck if you’ve never watched an episode because one of the onboard TV stations continuously broadcasts replays. But after you learn about all the activities offered on the 14 ships, you won’t want to be cooped up in your stateroom. In addition, Discovery at SEA offers a number of activities based on TV shows from the Discovery, Inc. family of networks, including Animal Planet, the Discovery Channel, and the Science Channel. The cruise line partners with breweries around the world as part of its unique Seawitch craft beer programme. The newest ship for Princess Cruises, Discovery Princess, sailed in 2022, and two additional Sphere-class ships, each of which will accommodate 4,300 guests, are scheduled to debut in 2023 and 2025, respectively.

6. Cunard is a large ship line.

Cunard is the company to choose if you yearn for the nostalgic romance of bygone transatlantic voyages. The world’s only true transatlantic ocean liner, built specifically for ocean crossings, and the only pet-friendly ship (dogs and cats are required to stay in the kennel, a designated playroom, and a specific walking deck), the legendary cruise line was founded in 1840 and has had dozens of ships in its fleet. However, today there are only three active ships: the Queen Mary 2 , the Queen Elizabeth, and the Queen Victoria. There are still formal afternoon teas, black-tie dinners, and ballroom galas, so not much has changed in the last 180 years. With all the contemporary safety precautions, of course, it feels a little like stepping back in time. The Queen Anne, the following Cunard vessel, is slated to depart port in 2024.

Holland America Line is a fifth-large ship line.

The cruise line Holland America was founded in 1873 with the primary purpose of transporting travellers, many of whom were emigrants, between the Netherlands and the United States, as suggested by its name. Of course, the cruise company now operates 11 ships that travel to more than 470 ports worldwide, and it is well known for its Alaska itinerary. Even though cruisers can partake in standard cruise activities like swimming, sports, and gambling, Holland America is renowned for its culinary and musical offerings. The company has a partnership with the TV programme America’s Test Kitchen for cooking demonstrations, cooking classes, and a number of live music venues, including a B.B. King’s Blues Club, as well as stage productions centred on the history of music on many of its ships. The Rotterdam, the newest vessel to join Holland America’s fleet, made its first voyage in July 2021 and can accommodate 2,650 people.

Disney Cruise Line is a fourth big ship line.

The hospitality aspect of Disney Cruise Line is one of its strong suits. The 4,000-passenger Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish, which will debut in 2022, are among the five cruise ships that the corporation has built using the lessons it has learned from operating its parks and resorts. The ships are completely geared toward families; there are daily themed events ranging from meet-and-greets to full-blown Disney character parties; nevertheless, there are plenty of adults-only spaces that offer a break from the small ones. The fleet now travels to Alaska, Canada, Europe, the Pacific Coast, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas (where they stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay). Disney Treasure, scheduled to debut in 2024, will be the following vessel to join the fleet.

3. Celebrity Cruises, a major cruise line

Celebrity Cruises currently operates a fleet of 16 ships that travels the world. These ships range in size from the small Xpedition-class ships, which accommodate 16 to 100 passengers, to the large Solstice class ships, which accommodate 2,800 to 3,100 passengers, and the 2,900-passenger Edge class, which made its debut in late 2018 with Celebrity Edge . With novel features like Eden, a three-story hybrid “experiential” restaurant, craft cocktail lounge, and performance venue, and Le Petit Chef at Le Grand Bistro, a dinner restaurant with a 4D animation projected on your plate throughout your meal, this edgy ship (pun intended) was created to appeal to a non-cruising clientele. Later, Celebrity Edge ‘s sister ships Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond joined it. Celebrity Ascent is scheduled to be delivered in 2023.

2. Virgin Voyages , a major ship operator

With the “Mermaiden” trip of Scarlet Lady departing from Miami in October 2021, Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages made its eagerly anticipated debut. The 2,770-passenger ship caters to adults only, and with its risqué live acts, glamorous nightclub, and unique services like a tattoo shop, it encourages a sensual, party-hard attitude. But it also stands out for its unusual dining alternatives, such the Korean BBQ joint Gunbae, where each meal starts with a round of drinks for the entire table. Valiant Lady, the cruise line’s second ship, had her Mediterranean premiere in March 2022, and Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady are scheduled to debut in 2023.

1. Norwegian Cruise Line, a large ship line

The cruise line went from operating medium-sized ships to mega-ships almost immediately (well, over eight years), with only a handful of the ships in its current fleet falling somewhere in between. But that will soon change. The first of six 3,300-passenger Prima-class ships, Norwegian Prima, debuted in August 2022. Among its highlights are the world’s first free-fall dry slide, the fastest slides at sea, a three-level go-kart racetrack, and a three-story theatre that converts into a nightclub following the evening’s performance. The next flight, Norwegian Viva, is scheduled to take off in 2023.

Large Ships (500 to 2,500 passengers)

17. MSC Cruises is a medium ship line.

MSC Cruises has appeared on our list three times , demonstrating how well-liked they are. Only four medium-sized ships of the Lirica class, which can carry between 2,000 and 2,600 passengers, are part of the Swiss cruise line’s fleet. Although they have all undergone renovations as part of MSC’s “Renaissance” initiative to update interiors and increase their size, these are the fleet’s oldest ships. Although the line’s fleet travels far beyond the region, visiting at ports all over the world, it is famed for its Mediterranean inspiration, so no matter where your ship is going, you will discover delectable Italian food on board. There is a lot of partying on MSC sailings, especially at night when many passengers stay out late at nightclubs.

Carnival Cruise Line, 16. Medium Ship Line

Carnival hasn’t built a ship so small since 2004 and doesn’t have any plans to build any more. The eight ships in the Fantasy and Spirit classes, which together hold 2,100 passengers apiece, are the only ones in that size. However, these smaller ships offer the same level of carefree fun on every voyage as the considerably larger (and more recent) Carnival ships. They travel on itineraries from the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and offer shorter sailings from Florida to the Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line, 15. Medium Ship Line

Norwegian Cruise Line historically focused on mid-sized ships that carry roughly 2,000 people until it introduced Norwegian Epic in 2010, followed by the Breakaway and Breakaway-plus classes in 2013 and 2015, respectively. These ships still make up the majority of the fleet today. The ships have a vibrant environment as guests take part in activities like bingo night, water slides, and funny pool competitions like synchronised swimming. The itineraries of Norwegian’s ships are extensive, with many of them concentrating on North America.

14. Celebrity Cruises, a medium-sized ship line

The Celebrity Millennium, Infinity, Summit, and Constellation are the company’s Millennium-class ships, which are the smallest in the fleet and can accommodate between 2,100 and 2,200 guests. (Celebrity’s three excursion ships are not included.) The ships were among the first to use more environmentally friendly engines that blended gas and steam power when they were first launched in the early 2000s, and they recently received a plethora of new and refurbished staterooms as part of Celebrity’s fleet-wide makeover. The four ships leave from ports in Europe, North America, and Asia, all of which are their home ports.

13. Marella Cruises, a medium-sized ship line

The four ships in the fleet of the U.K.-based cruise company Marella, which is run by TUI UK, can accommodate 1,100 to 2,000 passengers and travel on special trips to Asia in addition to routes around Europe, the Middle East, North America, and the Caribbean. Although the sailings are advertised as all-inclusive and do include drinks and tips, some of the specialty eateries have additional costs.

12. Hurtigruten is a medium ship line.

What began in Norway in 1893 as a coastal ferry service has grown to encompass trips to places like Antarctica, Cape Verde, and Greenland. Five of the seven expedition ships in Hurtigruten’s 14-ship fleet can accommodate 500–1,000 passengers each. (The two anomalies, MS Santa Cruz II and MS Fram, are considerably smaller!) The two newest ships of the cruise company, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, are hybrid-powered vessels, underlining Hurtigruten’s commitment to operating as sustainably as possible.

11. Royal Caribbean International is a medium ship line.

Even if it’s true that Royal Caribbean is best renowned for its big and mega-ships, the cruise line also operates a good number of medium-sized ships, each of which can accommodate a maximum of just under 2,500 passengers. Each of these ships is a member of the Vision class or Radiance class, two older ship families whose smaller proportions enable them to visit more exotic locations like Cyprus and Alaska. However, they also travel the Caribbean, giving fans of Royal Caribbean a more personal experience than the fleet’s bigger ships.

10. P&O Cruises is a medium ship line.

The oldest cruise line in the world is the British company P&O Cruises, which was founded in 1837 to transport mail and passengers between the United Kingdom and the Iberian Peninsula. However, it started offering leisure operations—the first cruises as we know them today—in 1844. The ships offer exceptional value for a traditional cruise experience and cater mostly to British passengers. Visitors take part in classic events including pub quizzes, dance lessons, and shuffleboard. The ships frequently go across Europe, but they also stop at ports in Asia and the Middle East.

9. Azamara is a medium ship line.

Although Azamara ‘s four 700-passenger ships are beautiful, have excellent food, and a variety of onboard activities to keep passengers occupied during long periods at sea, travellers pick this cruise line for the experiences it offers at its destinations, which cover all seven continents. Azamara not only provides customised shore excursions (so no one needs to be trapped in a slow-moving group with a flag-toting guide), but they also run a number of overnights, enabling passengers to see more places further interior. If they so want, travellers can spend an evening out on the town during the overnights at port cities.

Holland America Line is a medium-sized ship line.

Eight of Holland America’s 11 ships, which can accommodate 1,400–2,500 passengers, are classified as medium-sized. Despite the fact that the majority were constructed in the early 2000s, several have undergone significant restorations over the past three years, giving their interiors sophisticated new designs. Although the elegant ships travel to many different places across the globe, Alaska is one of the cruise line’s most popular stops.

Cunard is a medium ship line.

When compared to her sister ships, Queen Elizabeth (QE) and Queen Victoria (QV), Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 can accommodate more than 2,600 passengers as well as a number of cats and pets. The QE and the QV have different designs, although having a layout that is relatively similar. Both pay homage to the legendary ocean liners of the early 20th century, but the QE’s decor is more overtly Art Deco while the QV’s is more restrained but no less exquisite. On both ships, visitors are expected to enjoy afternoon tea before dressing elegantly for dinner.

Disney Cruise Line is a medium-sized ship line.

The Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the original two ships of the Disney Cruise Line, have been enchanting families for more than 20 years. However, while being a part of the Disney company, the 2,400-passenger ships don’t go overboard with Disney decorations. They are actually rather lovely, with Art Deco and Art Nouveau design elements that were influenced by early 20th-century ocean liners. It was announced in 2022 that Disney Wonder would make its inaugural voyages to Australia and New Zealand for a series of “Disney Magic at Sea” sailings in 2023 and 2024. During its two transpacific voyages, the ship will stop at a port in the South Pacific as well.

5. Silversea Cruises, a medium-sized ship line

Despite the fact that only three of Silversea’s fleet of ten ships are considered to be “medium-sized” and have passenger capacities of roughly 600, it is nevertheless thought to be a sizable amount for the opulent cruise company, which specialises on more intimate expedition ships. The biggest ships are Silversea Dawn, Silversea Muse, and Silversea Moon, which all made their debuts in 2021 and can each accommodate up to 596 guests. The line travels to more than 900 locations worldwide.

4. The medium-sized ship operator Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas is the genuine deal when it comes to all-inclusive cruises. The rates cover everything, including airfare in business class if you’re flying internationally, customised excursions, dinners, and alcoholic beverages. The mini-bar is also free! The only expenses you’ll have are for spa services, laundry, and gambling. The cruise line’s five ships can accommodate no more than 750 passengers each, but they are actually fairly big and give every passenger lots of privacy, especially in their cabins. The company Regent Seven Seas is an expert in round-the-world voyages. Next up for Regent is the 2023 launch of the Seven Seas Grandeur.

3. Seabourn is a medium ship line.

Think of a Seabourn trip as more akin to a megayacht than a regular cruise, with ultra-luxurious accommodations, food, and service. Currently, the fleet consists of five ships, the two largest of which can accommodate 600 passengers apiece. The ships’ diminutive size enables them to dock in little ports all over the world (in Indonesia, for example, they have collaborated with regional tourism organisations to develop ports like Celukan Bawang and Probolinggo). Many of the cruise line’s passengers are lifelong learners, and they frequently attend the Seabourn Conversation programme, which invites a variety of fascinating people on board for lectures and casual conversations, including Steve Wozniak and Elaine Paige. Celebrity chef Thomas Keller and Seabourn established a partnership in 2015, with Keller creating new menus for the three already-operational ships and spearheading the opening of new eateries on the two newest cruise ships, Seabourn Encore and Seabourn Ovation. The cruise line also debuted Seabourn Venture, its first exploration ship, in 2022. Seabourn Pursuit, her sister ship, is slated to follow in 2023.

2. Oceania Cruises, a medium-size ship line

On Oceania Cruises, the food takes centre stage. The 1,250-passenger MS Marina and MS Riviera have Jaques Pepin restaurants , a six-course Dom Perignon dinner with a flight of three vintages, a cooking centre where guests of all skill levels can attend classes, and excursions with a culinary focus, like a trip to the Nice market with a chef. Apiece of its four smaller Regatta-class ships, which can carry 684 guests each, has top-notch eating establishments including the Polo Grill and Toscana, an Italian restaurant. Oceania will receive two new ships with a capacity of 1,200 passengers in 2023 and 2025.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises, a medium-sized ship line.

Viking, which started out as a river cruise company, has launched seven ocean-going ships since 2015 (excluding expedition ships), the most recent of which, the Viking Mars, made its maiden voyage in May 2022. Each ship can accommodate 930 persons in balcony staterooms and is almost identical. While not all-inclusive, Viking Ocean provides passengers unrestricted Wi-Fi, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, and one free excursion in each port (the ships typically sail Northern Europe, though there are some Mediterranean itineraries, too). Viking Neptune and Viking Saturn, the next two vessels in the ocean fleet, will debut in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Small Boats (Fewer than 500 passengers)

9. Regent Seven Seas Cruises, a small ship operator

The Seven Seas Navigator, which accommodates just 490 passengers, takes its all-inclusive claim seriously by providing limitless shore excursions, open bars with fine wine (and minibars in each cabin), limitless Wi-Fi, and eating in specialised establishments. The ship travels on routes lasting a week to three months all over the world, from New Zealand to Dubai.

8. Star Clippers is a small ship line.

Three ships make up Star Clippers’ fleet, with the Royal Clipper, its flagship, holding the title of largest full-rigged sailing ship in the world. All three are sailing boats with traditional exteriors and elegant interiors that include multiple bars, a swimming pool, a library, and a formal dining room. They spread their sails for voyages around the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia.

SeaDream Yacht Club is a small ship line.

Getting to know your fellow passengers while travelling on one of SeaDream’s two 112-passenger yachts is a breeze whether you’re sailing through the Caribbean, around Europe, or across the Atlantic. A pool, whirlpool, and casino are among the amenities on the six levels, but the marina for watersports that can be lowered to the water’s edge for convenient ocean swimming, kayaking, and other activities is the true draw. The ships frequently spend the night in port, giving passengers the chance to take in the local nightlife before departing for their next destination.

6. Windstar Cruises is a small ship line.

The six ships in the line—three sailing yachts and three all-suite motor yachts—are known for visiting ports where larger ships are not permitted, such as the tranquil Caribbean island of Bequia and the Byzantine hilltop village of Monemvasia in the Greek Islands. With a sense of closeness that isn’t necessarily evident in the most popular cruise ports, those smaller ports can provide completely unique experiences. With the addition of more unique itineraries with culinary themes and guest chefs in 2017, Windstar also became the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation.

5. Seabourn is a small ship line.

Less than 300 suites are available on each of Seabourn’s seven ships, but they take advantage of their small size to gain access to some of the world’s most popular yacht ports, including St. Tropez in the south of France, the Greek island of Kos, and well-liked big ports like Dubrovnik and Monte Carlo. Thomas Keller, a Michelin-starred chef, creates exclusive dishes for the ships, and a relationship with UNESCO guarantees shore tours and environmentally friendly tourism methods at some of the world’s wildest and most beautiful locations. The line just debuted the adventure ship Seabourn Venture, and plans call for the launch of her sister ship, Seabourn Pursuit, in 2023.

4. American Cruise Lines, a small ship line

Although the 14-ship fleet of American Cruise Lines includes seven oceangoing ships that explore the country’s coastlines from New England to Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, the company is perhaps best known for its antique paddlewheelers. Just 90 passengers can board its Independence-class ships, whereas 170 can board its Constellation-class vessels. Two Coastal Cats (yep, they are catamarans) will make their debut in 2023 and accommodate 109 passengers apiece, filling the gap in the middle of the spectrum. They’ll travel via the South, New England, and the Chesapeake Bay.

3. Silversea Cruises, a small ship operator

The four expedition ships of Silversea make port calls in the South Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Galápagos Islands, the Caribbean, and Antarctica on shorter voyages, but they also provide round-the-world itineraries for a global clientele. One-of-a-kind experiences can be had on off-the-beaten-path adventures, such as private catamaran tours in tropical regions or penguin spotting in Antarctica. With the 144-passenger adventure ship Silver Explorer, Silversea conducted its first voyage across the Northwest Passage in September 2019—a significant accomplishment. In 2020, the new Silver Origin, a ship designed specifically for the Galápagos, joined the fleet.

2. Paul Gauguin Cruises, a small ship line

The purely Pacific-focused Paul Gauguin offers its 332 passengers year-round access to Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Fiji’s picture-perfect beaches and stunning landscapes. Passengers can enjoy beverages from the floating bar or take kayaks and paddleboards directly from the ship’s water sports marina to the line’s private island, Mota Mahana, in French Polynesia. An onboard PADI scuba programme certifies divers in some of the world’s clearest waters for those who desire to go under the water. The very best? The cost of the ship is all-inclusive. Ponant bought the cruise line in 2019.

Ponant is a small ship line.

Onboard Ponant’s fleet of ships that travel the world, fine French food, Hermès bath products, and individualised treatment are commonplace. Six additional Explorer-class ships created for luxurious expedition-style cruising have recently been added to the line’s original fleet of four expedition ships and one sailing yacht. Each has an infinity pool, a lounge where guests can see the undersea world, and itineraries that take them as far away as Papua New Guinea and the Bissagos Islands in West Africa. Le Commandant Charcot, an ice-breaking expedition ship, was only recently launched.

River Craft

9. The French Country Waterways River Ship Line

Five exquisite barge cruises run by French Country Waterways slowly tour the canals of Burgundy, the Loire Valley, Alsace-Lorraine, and Champagne. The itineraries usually emphasise wine tastings and fine meals, as one might expect. Each vessel only accommodates eight to eighteen travellers, guaranteeing a cosy experience that resembles a floating inn than a river cruise .

8. AmaWaterways is a river ship company

AmaWaterways operates riverboat cruises across Europe, Africa, Vietnam, and Cambodia. A few new ships have just made their debuts. The line introduced AmaMagna in 2019, a double-wide Danube river cruise with enormous 710-square-foot suites—a size unheard of on a river-going ship. Despite the ship being significantly bigger than her sisters, only 20% more passengers—196 total—were added, guaranteeing a more intimate voyage. The cruise line operates 22 ships throughout Europe, one on the Nile in Egypt, one on the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, and one on the Chobe in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa. The AmaLilia, AMAWaterways’ second Nile ship, will make her debut in 2024. The company will also extend into Latin America, sailing the AmaMagdalena in Colombia.

7. American Queen Voyages, a River Ship Line

Book a trip with the American Queen Voyages , whose four paddlewheelers cruise the Mississippi, Columbia, Snake, Ohio, Tennessee, and Cumberland Rivers, if nostalgia is your thing. Most of these sailings last nine days, although there are a few exceptions, including the 15- or 16-day trip from Minneapolis to New Orleans. Along with two ships that cruise lakes and oceans, the cruise line also has one adventure ship that travels to Alaska.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection is the sixth river ship company.

The 18 river ships operated by Uniworld go to destinations in Europe, Egypt, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Peru. With trips to nearby houses, farms, and artisans, its excursions provide travellers the chance to go a little closer to the places they want to go, and each excursion is evaluated according to difficulty. The S.S. So Gabriel, a cruise line’s newest vessel, travels the Douro River in Portugal. In 2020, the River Countess, a previous vessel, will be extensively rebuilt and renamed S.S. La Venezia.

Grand Circle Cruise Line is the fifth river ship line.

The immersive itineraries of Grand Circle Cruise Line are well-known. The eleven river ships in this smaller cruise line’s fleet are all part of the trip operator Grand Circle Travel. The eleventh, suitably named Nefertiti, cruises Egypt’s Nile, whereas the other ten sail in Europe.

4. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, a River Ship Line

16 opulent riverboats operated by Scenic travel the rivers of Europe and Asia, from the Danube in Germany to the Mekong in Vietnam. Each trip is entirely all-inclusive; transfers, excursions, all meals and drinks (even the mini-bar! ), and gratuities are all included in the price, ensuring a stress-free and really enjoyable vacation. Did we also mention that each cabin has a butler available? Additionally, Scenic unveiled Scenic Eclipse, its first expedition ship, which spends the majority of its time in the arctic areas.

3. Tauck River Cruising, a river ship company

With itineraries that highlight the castles of Germany’s Rhine River or visit Paris and Monet’s gardens at Giverny on a Seine cruise, Tauck’s nine river ships are experts in travelling through Northern Europe. A unique service among river cruise lines, special departures throughout the year accept multigenerational family groups with small children.

2. American Cruise Lines, a river ship company

American Cruise Lines has the rare distinction of operating both modern river ships and traditional paddlewheelers in the United States. The Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest can also be explored, so it’s not just the Mississippi that they sail on. American Symphony, the newest riverboat, will sail in 2022 and spend her first season on the Mississippi River.

1. Viking River Cruises is a river ship company.

With more than 60 river ships and seven ocean liners in its fleet, parent business Viking Cruises has been growing rapidly lately. The company’s riverboats go on far-off routes on the Volga in Russia, the Nile in Egypt, and the Mekong in Southeast Asia, as well as well-known waters like the Danube and Rhône in Europe, under the banner of Viking River Cruises. Additionally, Viking River Cruises offers complimentary Wi-Fi, a few shore excursions, and a “Culture Curriculum” that promotes hands-on learning through activities like seasonal wine tastings and rotating cuisines.

Explorer Ships

11. UnCruise Adventures: Expedition Cruise Line

Everything is in the name. UnCruise Adventures is, to put it mildly, unique among cruise lines. Although all expedition cruises include some element of adventure, UnCruise is adventure through and through. Examples include “yak-and-whack” outings, which last five, six, or seven hours and combine kilometres of kayaking with backcountry hiking. From Alaska to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez to the Panama Canal, the cruise line’s fleet of nine small ships can accommodate 22 to 86 guests as they travel around North and Central America. As they go off on their excursions, passengers immediately become close.

10. Celebrity Cruises’ Expedition Cruise Line

Celebrity’s three expedition ships, Celebrity Xpedition (a catamaran! ), Celebrity Xploration (only 16 passengers! ), and Celebrity Flora (100 passengers! ), are by far the smallest ships in the cruise line’s fleet. All three cruise the Galápagos; some itineraries also include pre- or post-sailing excursions to Ecuador’s mainland or even Peru, where visitors can see Machu Picchu.

9. Hurtigruten from Expedition Cruise Line

Seven ships that travel the seven seas make up Hurtigruten’s adventure fleet. Their itineraries span from polar excursions to trips to West Africa and Cape Verde to the Caribbean and Central America. The 528-passenger MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, who are identical to one another and both powered by hybrid engines, are the newest ships in the fleet (and named after famed Norwegian explorers). The 2007 construction of the 250-passenger MS Fram resulted in a complete renovation in 2022.

8. Ecoventura by Expedition Cruise Line

You can be sure that your time on board Ecoventura’s fleet of three expedition yachts, each holding 20 guests, will be individualised. If you want to spend more time with the amazing wildlife of the islands, you can combine the two week-long itineraries that the ships run in the Galápagos. Each of the opulent ships has 10 tastefully furnished cabins, a lounge where naturalists provide lectures and briefings prior to excursions, a dining area and bar, a library stocked with scholarly works on the Galápagos, and a sundeck for unwinding. Evolve, Ecoventura’s upcoming megayacht, will debut in the first half of 2023.

7. Quark Expeditions is an expedition cruise line.

Quark Expeditions is not for you if all you want is white sand and turquoise ocean. Each of the cruise company’s four ships is an icebreaker or an ice-strengthened vessel that can transport passengers to the farthest points of the northern and southern oceans. The cruise line specialises in polar adventures. The two icebreakers, in particular, are not particularly luxuriously decorated, though upgrades have made them pleasant. While you are certain to explore some spectacular rough landscape, you may also travel in a quite rugged ship. However, the access to the arctic zones they offer is unmatched and well worth the really realistic expedition experience. However, the posh new ships Ultramarine and World Explorer are a completely different matter. Even two helicopters are included with the former.

6. Quasar from Expedition Cruise Line

Quasar Expeditions, the first luxury line to cruise the Galápagos, is most renowned for its in-depth voyages aboard its two small ships, each of which holds fewer than 32 passengers. But take note of the reputation of said ships: Princess Grace of Monaco’s former yacht, the Grace, is one of the two. The Evolution will let you follow in Darwin’s footsteps as he explored the Galápagos.

5. Atlas Ocean Voyages, a cruise line run by Expedition

The 196-passenger World Navigator, the first ship of Atlas Ocean Voyages, was introduced to the cruise market in 2021. The five-continent luxury expedition cruise line mostly sails in the Arctic and Antarctica, but it has aspirations for further expansion. Later this year, the fleet’s second ship is scheduled to be launched, and three more will follow until 2024. Leisurely sailing trips in the Mediterranean and the British Isles, as well as a 17-night excursion from Cape Town to Tenerife, are among the itineraries offered beyond the polar regions.

4. Silversea Cruises and Expedition Cruise Line

The five expedition ships operated by Silversea, which is renowned for providing opulent hospitality, are no exception. The cruise line’s oldest ship, the 144-passenger Silver Explorer, was constructed in 1989 and ran its Antarctica cruises up until this season. This season, those routes will be replaced by the 200-passenger Silver Endeavor (formerly known as Crystal Endeavor). The 100-passenger Silver Origin is another ship run by Silversea that is based in the Galapagos.

3. National Geographic Expeditions’ Lindblad subsidiary, Expedition Cruise Line

This fleet of 15 ships travels to arduous, remote locations such Arctic Svalbard, Antarctica, Indonesia, and the Galápagos, with passenger capacity ranging from 28 to 148. Adventure often takes precedence over luxury on a Lindblad cruise. Small, basic accommodations are typical aboard cruise ships, but there are many memorable excursions available, such as diving in Borneo or traversing an ice field in Patagonia. However, some of its most recent fleet acquisitions are genuinely opulent, including the National Geographic Islander II, a beautiful ship that began sailing the Galápagos this year, as well as its two polar-sailing expedition ships, the National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution. An expedition team for each sailing is composed of professionals in disciplines like marine biology and photography.

2. Viking Expedition Cruises is an expedition cruise line.

When Viking was established in 1997, it only offered European river cruises. It quickly began operating in other rivers all around the world , and in 2013 it began operating in the oceans. However, Viking Expeditions was only established in 2020, and its first ship, the 378-passenger Viking Octantis, debuted in early 2022. Later in the year, Viking Polaris, her sister, had her maiden trip.

1. Ponant Expedition Cruise Line

Over the past four years, Ponant has made a significant investment in expedition cruising, introducing seven specially designed ships. Six are part of the cruise line’s Explorer class, which is renowned for its underwater lounges that have hydrophones that pump in ambient noises from the surrounding waters. Le Commandant Charcot, a Polar Class 2-rated icebreaker that arrived at the Geographic North Pole on September 6, 2021, is the seventh and newest ship.

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage.

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard.

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021. She is also powered by four MaK-Caterpillar engines, with a total power of 57.2 megawatts (76,706 horsepower), and two ABB Azipod motors , resulting in a service speed of 17 knots.

Named in homage to the Tuscany region of Italy, Costa Toscana mainly sails around the Mediterranean Sea but Costa Cruises has also used the ship to sail itineraries further afield, such as around Brazil and the UAE.

7. MSC Cruises – MSC World Europa : 215,863 gross tonnes

The only entry in the top ten from MSC Cruises, MSC World Europa measures 333m (1,094 feet) in length. With 215,863 gross tonnage, she can house more people than any other ship in the MSC fleet: up to 6,762 passengers across 2,633 cabins spread over 22 decks, in addition to 2,138 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the World Europa ’s LNG-power propulsion system was subcontracted to Finland-based Wärtsilä. Five LNG-powered, 14-cylinder Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines power the vessel, with a propulsion power of 44 megawatts ( 59,005 horsepower). She also features nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems, seven thrusters, and two fixed-pitch propellers.

The MSC World Europa was floated out at the end of 2021 and was initially used as an accommodation vessel for fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the ship berthed at Doha Port in Qatar during the tournament. Following the competition, the ship subsequently travelled several routes around the UAE, before sailing to the Mediterranean, where it has sailed itineraries since.

6. Royal Caribbean International – Allure of the Seas : 225,282 gross tonnes

The first of many entries on this list operated by Royal Caribbean, Allure of the Seas weighs in at 225,282 gross tonnes. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet), she is only 50mm (2 inches) longer than her sister ship the Oasis of the Seas . The Allure has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,200 crew across 18 decks.

Built at the Turku Shipyard in Finland, the Allure took two years to build , floating out in 2010. She features six Wärtsilä 46 diesel engines with a total power output of 97 megawatts (130,053 horsepower). It is propelled by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters. The ship can travel at a cruising speed of 22 knots.

With a homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US, the Allure mainly serves itineraries around the Bahamas but she is scheduled to sail routes around the Mediterranean in 2025.

5. Royal Caribbean International – Oasis of the Seas : 226,838 gross tonnes

The oldest ship on this list, the Oasis of the Seas has been in service for over a decade. She was the biggest cruise ship at the time when floated out in 2009, with a gross tonnage of 226,838gt and a length of 360m (1,181 feet). The Oasis has a maximum capacity of 6,699 passengers and 2,181 staff across 18 decks.

The Oasis is powered by eight Wärtsilä V12 diesel engines, which generate 5.6 megawatts (7,500 horsepower) each, alongside four bow thrusters. The main propulsion system consists of three 20-megawatt (26,820 horsepower) electric Azipod motors, resulting in a combined propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and a standard cruising speed of 23 knots.

The Oasis mainly operates routes around the Caribbean, but occasionally repositions to offer itineraries in the Mediterranean.

4. Royal Caribbean International – Harmony of the Seas : 226,963 gross tonnes

The third Oasis-class ship built by Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas weighed in bigger than her existing sister ships at launch in 2016, with 226,963 gross tonnage, but she has since been surpassed by newer vessels. Royal Caribbean placed an order with STX France for the construction of Harmony of the Seas in December 2012. The first steel for the ship was cut at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in September 2013, while the keel-laying ceremony was held in May 2014.

The Harmony is powered by three 18.9-megawatt Wärtsilä 16V46 16-cylinder main generator diesel engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46 12-cylinder engines producing 13.9 megawatts each. The propulsion power is provided by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters and manoeuvring is assisted by four 5.5-megawatt Wärtsilä CT 3500 tunnel thrusters. The propulsion system results in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and enables the ship to sail at a standard speed of 23 knots.

Harmony of the Seas embarked on her inaugural seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona, Spain, in June 2016, and currently operates itineraries around the Western Caribbean from her homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US.

3. Royal Caribbean International – Symphony of the Seas : 228,081 gross tonnes

Measuring 361m (1,185 feet), the Symphony has a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers and 2,200 staff across 18 decks and was the testing ground for Royal Caribbean's new muster drill . She is powered by six diesel sets, each composed of three Wärtsilä 16V46D engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46D engines, as well as three 20-megawatt electric Azipod main engines – resulting in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) of propulsion power and a standard cruising speed of 22 knots.

The Symphony commenced her seven-day maiden voyage from Barcelona in April 2018, and since then has mainly operated itineraries around the Caribbean from her homeports of Miami, New York, and Fort Lauderdale.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, Wonder is powered by two Wärtsilä 16V46D engines and four Wärtsilä 12V46D engines; and uses three 20-megawatt electric Azipod engines for propulsion, combining for a propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower and a standard cruising speed of 22 knots.

The Wonder sailed her maiden voyage in March 2022 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has since served itineraries around the Caribbean from her homeports of Miami and Cape Canaveral.

1. Royal Caribbean International – Icon of the Seas : 248,663 gross tonnes

Weighing 248,663 gross tonnes and measuring 365 metres (1,1967 feet), the Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. Christened on 23 January 2024, the Icon has a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew across 20 decks. She is the lead ship of the new Icon-class, with a sister ship the Star of the Seas due to be delivered in 2025 and another ship planned for delivery in 2026.

Built by Meyer Turku in Finland, the Icon is the first ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet that can be powered by LNG. It uses three Wärtsilä 14V46DF and three Wärtsilä 12V46DF for its main generator engines, which provide 67.5 megawatts of energy to run the ship. She is propelled by three 20-megawatt Azipod thrusters as well as five 4.8-megawatt Wärtsilä WTT-45 CP bow thrusters, with a cruising speed of 22 knots.

After sailing her maiden voyage on 27 January 2024, the Icon now sails year-round itineraries of seven-night trips around the Eastern and Western Caribbean from her homeport of Miami, Florida.

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

3 of the world's biggest cruise ships soon will battle for supremacy out of Miami

Gene Sloan

Get ready for the Battle of the Cruise Ship Giants out of Miami.

Fast-growing MSC Cruises on Thursday officially announced its North America schedule for the summer of 2025, including a Miami deployment that will set the stage for an epic matchup between three of the world's biggest cruise vessels.

As part of the announcement, MSC Cruises confirmed that its soon-to-debut MSC World America would sail from Miami from April 2025 through at least October 2025. This will place it in a head-to-head matchup with Royal Caribbean 's just-unveiled Icon of the Seas and Carnival Cruise Line 's one-year-old Carnival Celebration .

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

All three of the vessels will be the biggest in their respective fleets.

Scheduled to begin sailing in April 2025, MSC World America will be the world's seventh-biggest cruise ship when it debuts and the biggest MSC Cruises ship ever deployed to North America. Unveiled in January, Icon of the Seas is the world's biggest cruise ship .

Dating to November 2022, Carnival Celebration is the world's 14th biggest cruise ship.

For the summer of 2025, both MSC World America and Icon of the Seas will sail from Miami on Saturdays on seven-night trips to the Caribbean. Carnival Celebration will sail out of Miami on Sundays on six- to eight-night trips to the Caribbean .

As confirmed on Thursday, MSC World America will operate alternating itineraries to the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean.

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages will bring stops at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Ocean Cay, MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas.
  • Western Caribbean sailings will stop at Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Ocean Cay.

Icon of the Seas will rotate among four different itineraries across the Eastern and Western Caribbean that bring visits to such destinations as St. Thomas; St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin); Roatan; and Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico.

Carnival Celebration will mostly sail to Eastern Caribbean destinations such as St. Thomas, San Juan and Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. It'll also operate some Southern Caribbean cruises.

The matchup between MSC World America and Icon of the Seas is particularly notable as it marks the first time vessels measuring more than 200,000 tons from two different cruise brands have competed on sailings out of a North American port.

Giants of the seas

MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean are currently the only cruise brands in the world with ships measuring more than 200,000 tons. MSC World America is expected to measure around 216,000 tons. Icon of the Seas measures 248,663 tons. Carnival Celebration measures 183,521 tons.

All three vessels are among the most venue-filled in their respective fleets, with dozens of restaurants, bars, showrooms and over-the-top attractions on the decks.

MSC World America and Icon of the Seas, in particular, have several similarities, including public area venues segmented into "districts," as MSC Cruises calls them. Royal Caribbean calls them "neighborhoods."

Both ships have been designed around a central interior promenade with entertainment, shops and bars.

Among the standout features planned for MSC World America will be an Aquapark with multiple waterslides that integrate virtual reality technology. MSC Cruises also announced last week that the ship would have what's billed as the only overwater swing ride at sea; the attraction is called Cliffhanger, and it's suspended 160 feet above the water.

MSC World America will also have six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea.

As part of its Thursday announcement, MSC Cruises confirmed summer 2025 plans for three other vessels sailing out of North American ports:

  • The 4,540-passenger MSC Seascape will operate three-, four- and seven-night itineraries from Miami departing on Thursdays and Sundays. Stops will include Nassau, Bahamas; San Juan; Puerto Plata; Jamaica; Grand Cayman; and Ocean Cay.
  • The 4,488-passenger MSC Meraviglia will operate seven-night itineraries from New York City to Florida and the Bahamas and Bermuda, departing on Sundays. Stops on the Bahamas cruises will be Port Canaveral, Florida; Nassau; and Ocean Cay. The Bermuda cruises will bring an extended call at Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard.
  • The 4,540-passenger MSC Seashore will operate three-, four- and seven-night itineraries from Port Canaveral with a range of port options departing Thursdays and Sundays.

All three of the vessels are among the 25 biggest cruise ships in the world.

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson
