Emerging from the wilds of Michigan with the primal scream that was the first Stooges album, Iggy Pop has forged a singular path in musical history since 1969. His artistic output has been unrelenting and uniformly intense, from indelible Stooges staples Fun House and Raw Power, to solo classics including the brilliant 1977 double shot of his solo debut The Idiot and the timeless Lust For Life, New Values, Blah-Blah-Blah, Brick by Brick, Skull Ring, Post Pop Depression and most recently 2019’s Free. A member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since his 2010 induction with The Stooges, Iggy has been the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as such prestigious international honors as France’s Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Sweden’s Polar Music Prize.

Beginning in 1967 with his era-defining group The Stooges, Pop merged primal rock, blues, and free jazz into something altogether dangerous and new, paving the way for punk, post-punk, hard rock, and grunge. His landmark solo career – which kicked off with 1977’s David Bowie-produced The Idiot and Lust For Life – has seen Pop traverse a stunning span of musical genres, inspiring generation after generation of rock ‘n rollers with his iconoclastic songcraft, uncompromising performance style, and one-of-a-kind charisma. Perhaps the greatest living embodiment of rock & roll, Pop has never slowed down, pushing the art form forward for more than half a century, including his 2019 full length recording, contemplative, critically acclaimed Free.

Iggy Pop & Blondie: Dog Day Afternoon at Crystal Palace stage times

The Lust For Life legend will be joined by very special guests Blondie and Sex Pistols and Generation X punk supergroup Generation Sex.

Iggy Pop is set to play a special one-off show at London's Crystal Palace Park this weekend.

Dog Day Afternoon will see Godfather of punk play a headline show, joined by very special guests Blondie.

Who's joining Iggy Pop on the line-up?

The open-air show, which takes place on 1st July 2023, will also feature a performance from punk supergroup Generation Sex , made up of former Generation X members Billy Idol and Tony James , with Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook.

Also joining the Godfather of Punk on the line-up are legendary Manchester band Buzzcocks , Belfast punk pioneers Stiff Little Fingers and Brighton outfit Lambrini Girls.

Debbie Harry said of the announcement: “Blondie and Iggy Pop… We are excited to reunite with our friend, the one and only Prince of Punk, Iggy, for this special show in Crystal Palace Park next summer. Once more, with feeling!”

Steve Jones from Generation Sex, who will play a set of punk classics from both band’s extensive catalogues, said: “Just every now and then we find time to get together with old pals from back in the day - purely just for the crack and to have fun. If it ain’t fun then we ain’t interested, life’s too short. And it’s a great bill with Iggy Pop and Blondie.”

Following glowing reviews, sold-out venues and many, many fun nights, the all-star line-up celebrating Iggy Pop’s classic Lust For Life album have announced a second UK tour. Legendary Blondie drummer, Clem Burke , will once again be joined by former Sex Pistol and punk pioneer,  Glen Matlock on bass; broadcaster and Pet Shop Boys dancer, Katie Puckrik on vocals; Iggy Pop and David Bowie collaborator, Kevin Armstrong on guitar;  Luis Correia , who’s toured internationally with Earl Slick on second guitar; together with classical pianist, composer, and touring member of Heaven 17, Florence Sabeva on keyboards.

The band will again perform the Lust For Life album in full, as well as revisiting songs from across the individual band members’ careers with legendary artists including Blondie, David Bowie and the Sex Pistols. Some of them will be songs the band performed on the last tour but there will be a few surprises thrown in as well.

Three of the band members, Glen Matlock, Clem Burke and Kevin Armstrong, have toured with Iggy Pop and each has made an album with him: Glen Matlock (Soldier) in 1980, Clem Burke (Zombie Birdhouse) in 1982 and Kevin Armstrong (Blah Blah Blah) in 1986.

Fronting the band, the irrepressible Katie Puckrik proved a rock ‘n’ roll revelation to many on the last tour. As Clem Burke said: “Katie is fantastic and she’s joined the ranks of the other brilliant women I’ve been fortunate to play with: Debbie, Annie, Nancy, Wanda, The Go Go’s and Joan!”

“Touring Iggy Pop’s Lust For Life in 2023 felt like a homecoming. My broadcast career had long steered me away from my original calling as a performer, from dancing onstage with The Fall and Michael Clark Company, touring the world with Pet Shop Boys, and singing in Sparks’ opera The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman, both on the original cast recording and in performance. So to embody the funny/dirty/tart/smart songs of the magnificent Iggy Pop was an electrifying rebirth. Every single gig was a communion with a frothing room of Pop-aholics, and it’s thanks to the crowds who danced and hollered along to Lust For Life, The Passenger, and the rest of Iggy’s anthems, that we get to do it all over again. Once again I’ll be elevated by some of Iggy, Bowie and Blondie’s most beloved players, including Clem Burke, Glen Matlock and Kevin Armstrong, and I’m warning you—this band is a joy machine!”

As the band took up their positions, in the rear shadows of the Royal Albert Hall stage a lank-haired figure could be seen sitting at a dressing table in the glow of a table lamp. The stomping drum intro to “Lust for Life” signalled that it was time to begin. Our man took a swig from a drink, dabbed his mouth with a napkin, then propelled himself into the spotlight, gurning, punching the air like a drunken pugilist, lurching with his simian gait and fixing the auditorium with an expression of wild-eyed astonishment that remained etched on his face for the next couple of hours.

Here was Iggy Pop, punk-rock legend, aged 69, modestly attired in black trousers and a single-button black jacket, the latter of which he soon dispensed with to reveal that his much-punished skin now resembles the leather from a vintage car seat. He was astonishingly vigorous and his voice seemed untouched by the decades. And he was happy — so happy that he shouted the word “Fuck!” five times in exhilaration a couple of songs into the set.

This was quite a show, a night that celebrated with delirious abandon the business of being alive. But it was unforgettable not just because of Iggy’s rampagingly energetic performance, in which he stage-dived recklessly and walked freely through the crowd, hugging and snogging and emerging from one scrum with blood trickling down his face, but also because on stage with him he had several members of rock royalty: three members of Queens of the Stone Age, among them that group’s guitarist/singer Josh Homme, as well as Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. They were a hell of a band, smouldering and swaggering, Homme sashaying across the stage in alluring hip-swaying strides.

The night was memorable, too, because almost every track they played was drawn from one of three albums: The Idiot and Lust for Life , the two albums that Iggy made with David Bowie in the 1970s, and Post Pop Depression , this year’s excellent collaboration with Homme. Have “The Passenger”, “Nightclubbing”, “Tonight” and “Mass Production” ever been played and sung with such love? Iggy made no mention of Bowie, but these songs were tribute enough. Meanwhile, new tracks such as “Gardenia” and “American Valhalla” were a blast, the raw intensity of Iggy’s pebbledashed baritone the perfect foil for the sleazy decadence of Homme’s music-making.

The show — rumoured to be among Iggy’s last — ended with a roof-raising “Success”, Iggy prancing like a jester and grinning like a loon. Wonderful.

James Jewel Osterberg, aka as Iggy Pop, Iggy Stooge or The Ig, is one of American rock’s greatest characters. An innovator with origins in garage punk bands, he saw the light at an early Doors concert where his hero Jim Morrison’s stage antics sparked the idea that he could do follow suit. Outrage, theatricality and the sensual side of performance informed his own act from year zero. He made truly seminal albums with The Stooges for Elektra Records before embarking on a long and brilliant solo career that has given us such epics as Lust For Life , The Idiot   and  TV Eye and chart success with ‘Nightclubbing’, ‘China Girl’ and ‘The Passenger’. Inducted with The Stooges into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 he has managed to parlay a uniquely anarchic stance into something that flirts with mainstream acceptance but is never diluted by compromise. For all his street credibility and flamboyant image Iggy is no fool. You’re just as likely to find him hunkered down with a copy of Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire as you are trashing a backline of amplifiers. If he plays a role then he’s perfect for the part he created. He is a one-of-a-kind artist.

Born in suburban Michigan in 1947 the young Osterberg began his musical career as a drummer in various Ann Arbor bands, including The Iguanas (from whence his stage name) and at first, he immersed himself in traditional urban blues, inspired by Paul Butterfield’s skins man Sam Lay. When the less family-friendly groups rolled into town, the MC5, Doors and Sonics, Jimmy would be stage front, sucking up the energy. Ever willing to push the boundaries back and smash down the walls his tenure in the mighty Stooges ran from the psychedelic sixties to the beginning of the glam seventies, both eras reflecting in his music. The Stooges had notoriety rather than sales but in 1971 Iggy hooked up with David Bowie who brought him to London to make the classic Raw Power and play his debut English date at the King’s Cross Scala – those who were lucky enough to be there (including yours truly) cite this show as one of the most riveting rock concerts ever. After reuniting The Stooges, no small achievement considering the various member’s personal habits, Iggy got, as they say, his act together. Relatively cleaned up and always spectacularly fit, he proceeded to attend to a sequence of superb albums. Which is where we come in. After touring with Bowie on his Station to Station tour, Iggy Pop, as he now was, adopted a similar template for  The Idiot  (1977) which is widely regarded as the kick-start for Bowie’s own Berlin period. Recording in Paris, Munich and Berlin, Iggy and Bowie worked up a futuristic sound without relying too heavily on synthesisers and electronica, rather adapting those elements sparsely and lashing them to Ig’s trademark hard rock. Using champion players like Carlos Alomar on guitar and the rhythm section of Dennis Davis and George Murray, the songs also had a hard soulful funk edge. Every track here is a winner, starting with ‘Sister Midnight’, the strutting ‘Nightclubbing’ and throwback ‘Funtime’, it’s amazing to count the notches of excellence. ‘China Girl’, ‘Dum Dum Boys’ and the monumental rock of ‘Mass Production’ were no slouches either and the resulting album became Ig’s first major chart entry in the UK and America.  The Idiot was a huge influence on forthcoming acts like Joy Division,  Siouxsie and the Banshees , Depeche Mode and the alt. American rock movement of the ’80s.

‘Stuck In The Middle With You’: Stealers Wheel’s Clowns And Jokers

Continuing the theme Iggy returned to the Hansa Studio by the Wall, Berlin to record  Lust For Life , another five-star extravaganza. The fast recording process (Bowie notoriously hates overdubbing and unnecessary takes) gave LFL a spontaneously combusting live feel. New guitarist Ricky Gardiner composed the haunting, cinematic ‘The Passenger’, which Iggy set to lyrics inspired by a Jim Morrison poem. Bowie provided the title track’s urgent stop-start riffs, while Mr Pop looked into his own dark soul to pen ‘Turn Blue’, the confessional ‘Some Weird Sin’ and the affecting ‘Fall In Love With Me’ which revealed a side to him hitherto not deemed possible to locate. Again the hold the album exerted on other bands suggested that Iggy doesn’t have peers, he has acolytes. When other rated musicians are in thrall to you, then you must be doing something right.

Having turned the dangerous age of 30, Iggy did the decent thing and released  TV Eye: Live 1977 , assembled swiftly from dates on an American tour, including heartland venues in Kansas City, Chicago and Cleveland – hotbeds of hard rock. Mixing up a few choice Stooges classics like ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ and the resurrected title track with vital moments from his recent discs all crunched into gear by Tony and Hunt Sales, Bowie and Scott Thurston.

After a couple of label switches, Iggy zooms back onto our radar with Brick by Brick  (1990). Produced now by Don Was, this album garnered Pop fulsome praise. A carefully constructed set of songs, many dealing with America’s imminent cultural decay, struck a nerve with listeners and the huge sound provided by Slash and Duff McKagan from  Guns N’Roses  were the perfect backdrop to urgent pieces like ‘Butt Town’, ‘Main Street Eyes’ and ‘The Undefeated’. Don Was also brought some choice guests to the party, including B-52’s vocalist Kate Pierson whose duet with the artist on ‘Candy’ gave Ig his first MTV hit. Elsewhere John Hiatt, Sweet Pea Atkinson and Sir Harry Bowers lend a gritty R&B edge to an album that is well worth rediscovery today.

On a roll again,  American Caesar  (1993) continued the theme of examining social upheaval and is a very strong disc. Amongst the standout cuts is a terrific reworking of The Kingsmen punk nugget ‘Louie Louie’, hilariously adapted by Iggy to give it an astonishing twist. This time Iggy works with Malcolm Burn in New Orleans and Bearsville, NY State and they concoct a sprawling 70 minutes plus of contemporary Iggy gems like ‘Plastic & Concrete’ and ‘Perforation Problems’. Despite the subject matter, there is a deal of sly humour to boot and the CD comes with a tongue-in-cheek Parental Warning.

Naughty Little Doggie  shows Iggy on the cover wearing an American army helmet and the listener might be advised to take heed since this is another take no prisoners affair performed by Iggy and the F**kups. The likes of ‘Knucklehead’, the elegiac ‘Look Away’ (in honour of Johnny Thunders and Sable Starr) and ‘Heart Is Saved’ are all top-notch and walked into the Ig’s then live sets like old friends.

Pop kicked out the jams again on  Avenue B , a real New York love affair again produced by Don Was. The extra track ‘Hollywood Affair’ finds a willing ally in Johnny Depp and there’s an incendiary version of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ ‘Shakin’ All Over’ to thrill over as well as the slinky ‘Miss Argentina’ and ‘Nazi Girlfriend’ for those with more outrageous tastes.

Energised by his all-round entertainer acceptance Iggy produced his own  Beat ‘Em Up  in Miami’s Hit Factory and went against the grain of everything that was middle of the road in American rock at that time. To warm the heart further Iggy rocked out big style as he confronted the taboo on ‘Drink New Blood’, ‘Death is Certain’ and the black humoured ‘Go for the Throat’. Calling his four-piece The Trolls showed where his head was at. Not where anyone else’s head is at.

Melting the metal again,  Skull Ring  is outlandishly punk. The Trolls and The Stooges join in on a disc that boasts flaming guitar riffs and stacks of grinding percussion. This ain’t for the faint-hearted but Iggy fans lapped it up while the combination of Pop and Green Day on ‘Supermarket’ was a savvy move that introduced the Ig to a new generation. Lucky those who have never heard him before because a treat is in store. The 2-disc anthology  A Million In Prizes  is the definitive collection for anyone who wants to dip a toe in and heard why all the fuss. Containing a generous helping of vintage Stooges material, cuts with James Williamson and the solo classics there are 38 moments of magic here including ‘I’m Bored’, the duets ‘Did You Evah!’ with Debbie Harry (of  Blondie  fame) and ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ with Francoise Hardy and other signature pieces like ‘Real Wild Child (Wild One’) and the best bits from  Raw Power . Unconditionally recommended.

Preliminaires brings our tale to a close for now and, whisper it quietly, but rock is here replaced by French chanson, Brazilian rhythms and Bourbon Street jazz-blues – definitely a weird one but worth checking out for precisely that reason. It’s also a great album.

So there you have him. Iggy Pop. How pleased we are to make his acquaintance. They broke the mould when he popped out. We won’t see his like again.

Iggy Pop turns 76 (!) on Friday, April 21.

To celebrate, the ageless rock icon is playing concerts with his star-studded supergroup The Losers all over the west coast on his brief ‘Sold Out! Tour’ this month.

Starting April 20, Iggy and The Losers are embarking on a five-concert tour that will send him to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Iggy Pop (born James Newell Osterberg Jr on April 21, 1947 in Muskegon, Michigan) is a singer, songwriter, producer, actor, and radio presenter. Iggy Pop begun his music career as a drummer for various high school bands around Ann Arbor in Michigan, playing with the Iguanas, from which he adapted his future stage name. Iggy Pop came to notice as the lead singer with Stooges, a proto-punk outfit who he formed after seeing The Doors. Iggy Pop travelled with David Bowie to live in Berlin in the mid-1970s, creating his solo albums Lust For Life and The Idiot, which Bowie produced. Iggy Pop was then claimed as the Godfather of Punk, with the likes of The Damned citing him as an influence and Sex Pistols covering his song No Fun. Iggy Pop has since released a host of albums, and finally made his Official Singles Chart debut in the UK in 1986 with Real Wild Child, as well as breaking into acting. Taylor Swift will soon launch the European, UK and Ireland legs of her record-breaking Eras tour.

Over the past year, the 34-year-old pop star has been performing her career-spanning shows at stadiums around the world, including North America, Tokyo, Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore.

A month after the release of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Society, she will continue the Eras tour with four nights in Paris at the La Défense Arena.

After this, she will perform two shows in Lisbon, Portugal, then a further two nights in Madrid, Spain, and Lyon, France.

UK-based fans (and those travelling to see Swift from overseas) will then get to see her live during three nights from 7 to 9 June at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland, before she heads to Liverpool and Cardiff.

Swift is booked to perform a staggering eight shows at Wembley Stadium in London, with the first three taking place between 21 and 23 June, before she returns for the final five nights of her UK and Europe tour between 15 and 20 August.

In between those, she will have also played in Dublin, Ireland, in Amsterdam, Zurich, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg and Munich in Germany, Warsaw in Poland, and Vienna, Austria.

Ticketmaster recently announced a major update for fans with tickets to see Swift this summer.

In a five-star review of the very first show of Swift’s Eras tour , critic Kelsey Barnes wrote how the US star guided fans through more than a decade’s worth of “her best work”.

“Her ‘Eras Tour’ was designed as a journey through that staggering back catalogue of 10 albums, from her earlier country twang on her self-titled debut to the shift to synth-pop on 1989 , then to the subdued folk and alt-rock of Folklore and Evermore ,” she wrote.

“Throughout the opening night of the tour, it frequently feels as though the audience is being caught up with Swift’s past, present and future. In the 44-song setlist that spans three hours and 15 minutes, she shows why the “era” concept is so integral to who she is. Each chapter marks a specific shift in her artistry.”

The Tortured Poets Department, released on 19 April, is the pop titan’s 11th studio album. It appears to have been inspired, in part, by the five stages of grief. Ahead of the release, Swift shared five new playlists that arrange her songs into those stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

“These songs represent making room for more good in your life,” she says in a brief audio message that accompanied the final playlist, acceptance. “Making that choice. Because a lot of time when we lose things, we gain things too.”

Kygo announces 2024 UK, European and North American arena tour

The Norwegian DJ will play 26 dates from September to December

Kygo has announced details of a huge world tour, taking in North America, Europe and the UK later this year – see the full list below, as well as ticket information.

The Norwegian house DJ and producer will play a total of 26 dates, his first such extensive tour since 2018.

The tour kicks off at Denver’s Dicks Sporting Goods Park on September 7, and takes in Columbia, New York, Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Austin, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, before wrapping the North American leg in Los Angeles on October 17.

Kygo then heads across the Atlantic the following month, starting in Copenhagen on November 6, and running around Europe for 12 dates. He will then round out the year with a headline show at London’s The O2 on December 11 and Dublin’s 3Arena on December 13.

Support at the shows will come from Sofi Tukker , Gryffin, Sam Feldt, Zara Larsson , Klangkarussell, Hayla, Victoria Nadine and Vandelux.

Last year, Kygo shared a reimagined remix of Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson’s 1983 single ‘Say Say Say’ .

“I’m absolutely honoured to work on a song that was made by two of the greatest musical legends of all time,” said Kygo. “Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson have meant so much to me as an artist and I’ve been listening to their music since I was a kid.”

His latest album is 2022’s ‘Thrill Of The Chase’, his fourth in total, which featured collaborations with  X Ambassadors ,  DNCE ,  Lukas Graham ,  Sam Feldt ,  Dean Lewis , and more.
