Vance Joy’s Travels Are Just Getting Started With New Music, Tour

With borders opening-up around the globe, Joy is ready to embark on new travels. From next September, he’ll hit the road for "The Long Way Home Tour." And new music is coming.

With No. 1s, awards, a song that has raced past one billion streams, and supports for Taylor Swift and Pink , V ance Joy is a well-travelled man.

But it could have been so very different. The Melbourne-raised singer and songwriter (real name James Keogh) had something of a sliding doors moment a decade ago, when a song came to him while he was completing his law degree.

“I was finishing my last class, a summer class. I must have failed a subject along the way and needed to fill a gap,” he recounts. As he hit the books, he wrote lyrics in his notepad. Those lyrics would become “Riptide”.

“It’s funny how that song came along at the last moment of my studies. It came along at that important moment when I was deciding how I was going to spend the next year. That was fortunate. For whatever reason it opened-up at exactly the right time.”

In music, timing is everything. “Riptide” was the zeitgeist. It topped triple j’s Hottest 100 poll, won APRA’s song of the year in 2014, caught the attention of TayTay, and it changed the artist’s life.

To date, Joy’s singles, which include “Mess is Mine,” “Georgia,” “Fire and the Flood,” “Lay It On Me,” “I’m With You,” “Saturday Sun” and “We’re Going Home,” have been streamed more than 3.2 billion times.

The legal community’s loss is the music industry’s gain. With the prospect of a career behind a desk in the rearview, Joy has released two studio albums, both of which hit No. 1 on the albums chart in his homeland. Dream Your Life Away , his debut from 2014, hit No. 17 on the Billboard 200; and 2018’s Nation of Two peaked at No. 10 in the United States.

Music has taken Joy to arenas and stadiums around the globe, and created opportunities to live abroad. There was a stint in Los Angeles several years ago, and, now, Joy calls Barcelona home. “It’s a beautiful city that cares about art,” he explains. Joy fell for the home of Gaudi while visiting prior to Pink’s Beautiful Trauma World Tour , for which he opened on the European leg. He also fell for a girl, and they’ve been together ever since.

His Spanish is ok, but not great, he admits. Catalan is another challenge altogether. “I would like to learn,” he tells Billboard over a Zoom call, “but I also feel like my attempts to learn a new language are doomed.”

With borders re-opening around the globe, Joy is ready to embark on new travels. From September 2022, he’ll hit the road for The Long Way Home Tour , a two-month run spanning 13 outdoor concerts across Australia, including a special date at the Sydney Opera House Forecourt.

His first tour in four years will be his biggest-ever headline trek of Australia. The dates are presented by Frontier Touring, triple j, Village Sounds and UNIFIED, with supports including The Rubens, Thelma Plum, Middle Kids, Budjerah and Mia Wray.

International shows will be announced in due course.

When asked if his next run will support a new, third album, Joy didn’t flinch. “Yes, yes definitely. There’ll be an album out,” he tells Billboard .

Thanks in part to the downtime created by the pandemic, Joy has made a good start on his next musical phase. A new song, “Missing Piece,” dropped this year, scooped five nominations this the upcoming ARIA Awards, and recently led Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart. Other works are taking shape.

“It’s a bit unorthodox releasing a tour before the album is all locked away, but for me it’s nice to have some deadlines, to help motivate me,” he explains. “We’ve been operating in a bit of a vacuum, where there’s been no deadlines. Things can drag out for years. I’m glad there are some deadlines, to get things done and focus on other things. I might be closer than I realize (to completing the album) but I still want to keep writing songs.”

Vance Joy Announces 13-date National ‘The Long Way Home Tour’ 2022

Frontier Touring are thrilled to announce Vance Joy’s The Long Way Home Tour . Multi award-winning Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy is ready to embark on the tour he’s been waiting his whole career for. Joined by his full band, and some very special guests, the tour will see Vance travelling across Australia for more than two months, playing regional towns and major cities from early September to late November 2022. All shows will be all-ages events.

The tour announcement comes off the back of Vance Joy’s five ARIA Award nominations, including Best Artist, Best Pop Release for his latest hit, Missing Piece , and Song of the Year .

Vance Joy will play outdoor shows in Darwin, Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra, Newcastle, Gippsland, Hobart, Adelaide, Busselton, Sydney and Melbourne.

The Long Way Home Tour will give Vance Joy the opportunity to perform for his fans across Australia, in a tour that celebrates the magic of live music, gathering together and sharing the spirit of community; all the things that we’ve been reminded of the importance of in the past 18 months.

After travelling to all corners of the country, Vance Joy will perform two shows at one of Australia’s most iconic locations with one of the world’s most recognisable backdrops – the Sydney Opera House Forecourt, and then complete The Long Way Home Tour with a final hometown show at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl, almost a decade to the day since he played his first ticketed headline show to just a handful of fans at The Toff In Town in 2012.

Joining Vance on The Long Way Home Tour will be an array of hand-picked guest artists and friends including The Rubens, Thelma Plum, Middle Kids, Budjerah and Mia Wray.

Vance Joy Announces 13 Date Long Way Home Tour For 2022

Vance Joy will head out on a massive 2022 Australian tour with special guests across the country.

Various shows will include The Rubens, Thelma Plum, Budjerah and Mia Wray as well as other acts from the start of the tour on September 17 through to late November.

It was my first Vance Joy gig, not my first time seeing an artist play in the venue though.

The support act was well-chosen and energetic, the main set nice, however it was only 1 1/4 hours - a fact that I heard other people talk about afterwards, too, but who knows if he was just sick or tired or something.

Oh, and (I don't want to dictate how a musician should perform, but) I would have loved a little more engaging with the crowd. But I guess that's a total matter of taste, I just prefer more talking and banter in-between songs.

All in all neither the best concert I've ever been to, nor in any way a bad one.

Got home from the concert and still buzzing from the wonderful evening.

Vance is amazing - very interactive with his audience.

My absolute favourite thing that kept me smiling all night is the way Vance is 'marching' on the spot with his music.

What a guy.

I took my teenage son and his girlfriend this evening and the three of us had a great night.

What an amazing venue, so intimate and a great set up.

As I have written before: "We're going home" is my favourite song, because it reminds me of home in The Netherlands. I am the only one that migrated to Australia. Sometimes the song makes me happy and sometimes it makes me sad, sometimes I feel homesick.

Amazing, fantastic! The support acts were brilliant too and they were a perfect match for this style of music. Vance Joy was so generous with his time! He sang for 1 1/2 hours, every set was brilliant. We were right down the front and it felt like he was singing and talking to us. Vance Joy spoke during each song, gave background to them and he was so normal. It was just amazing He also had a great backing band and he spent time introducing each person. It was the best concert I have ever been to and that includes Ed Sheehan (though that was also amazing).

Missing In Action: Vance Joy Makes His Long-Awaited Return

Rolling Stone Australia talks to Vance Joy about his career, inspirations, and newly announced 2022 Australian tour.

It’s the morning after Halloween and Vance Joy is feeling a bit dusty. Vance Joy—who’s better known to those around him as James Keogh—is currently based in Barcelona, where his partner is from. 

The couple’s transhemispheric romance provided the inspiration for Vance Joy ’s latest single, “Missing Piece”, which highlights the complexities of long distance relationships and the drawbacks of Zoom-mediated intimacy. 

“ I see you darling but you pixelate ,” he sings in the song’s first verse. “ It gets hard to take these days .”

Right now, however, it’s me who’s watching the picture pixelate as Keogh tells me about his Donnie Darko -themed Halloween costume. “In the film, Donnie dresses up like a skeleton,” he says. “And I love the vibe, like the skeleton with the hoodie—very into that.”

Keogh is 33 years old, meaning he’d have been just 13 when Donnie Darko premiered in cinemas in 2001. Although not a major box office success, Donnie Darko became a sleeper hit, particularly among millennial teens. 

In the mid-aughts, anyone with a goth-tinged Myspace template listed Donnie Darko as one of their favourite films, alongside Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem For a Dream and David Fincher’s Fight Club . The film made a big impression on Keogh.

“I remember watching it with my brother. Maybe it was referenced on a movie review show, like David and Margaret? But I remember watching it and it was so scary and exciting and cool. Great soundtrack as well; like, unbelievable,” he says.

Perhaps the most memorable song on the Donnie Darko soundtrack is Gary Jules and Michael Andrews’ take on Tears For Fears’ “Mad World”; another myspace favourite. The film also includes snippets of Echo & the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon”, Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and The Church’s “Under the Milky Way”.

The Vance Joy catalogue is almost entirely free of post-punk and new wave influences, but that’s not to say Keogh didn’t have a go at writing moody and angular rock music when he was a teenager. 

Keogh grew up in the affluent Melbourne suburb of Murrumbeena and started playing in a band called Hyper Sonic just after finishing high school. 

“We were definitely just making songs that sounded exactly like Bloc Party,” he says. “And by exactly like, I mean nothing like, but stealing the riffs, ripping it off. And also Joy Division—I remember writing a Joy Division-sounding song after watching the movie Control .”

It’s interesting to hear Keogh speak about the impression left on him by film soundtracks, especially when you consider how many Vance Joy songs have been used in movies and TV shows over the past half-dozen years.

His breakout single, “Riptide”, popped up in both Neighbours and Home and Away , as well The Inbetweeners 2 , and it continues to be licensed for US network TV shows and ads. Meanwhile, “Missing Piece” featured in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy fewer than seven days after its release.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. How did Keogh go from aping Bloc Party and Joy Division in adolescent jam sessions to writing uplifting acoustic-pop hits, beloved the world-over? 

“A couple of years after the band played its last show, I started writing songs on guitar,” he says. “There was no expectation or evidence that I would be able to write songs really, but I just kept trying.”

These days we think of Vance Joy as an international artist who spends a lot more time entertaining the masses at Red Rocks, Wembley and Coachella than riding the Melbourne tram network. But in many ways, Vance Joy remains a homespun operation. 

When Keogh’s not pursuing romance in Barcelona, he lives in the inner Melbourne suburb of Northcote. His managers, Rachael and Jaddan Comerford (of the Unified Music Group), are both from Melbourne, and likewise the five members of the Vance Joy live band: drummer Edwin White, bass player Jono Colliver, keyboardist Chris Mulhall and horn players Will Morrissey and Nic Ryan-Glenie. 

“We all live very close to each other, which is nice,” Keogh says. “Touring with your mates, it’s just very comfortable. It’s like being a little family and you’re on a camp together which goes around, so that’s really nice.”

Vance Joy hasn’t played an Australian headline date since the tour behind his second and most recent LP, Nation Of Two , in 2018. Although he’s taken part in many COVID-era livestreams, including Music From the Home Front and Splendour XR, Keogh’s last conventional public performance was in Europe more than two years ago.

He’s getting ready to atone for this lengthy absence, however, with his mega “Long Way Home” Australian tour scheduled for the tail-end of 2022. The run of 13 dates kicks off next September, by which time there should be a new Vance Joy album available.

“I’ve got to get on my bike a little bit. On paper I have enough songs, but I still think I need a few more good songs,” Keogh says. “At some point we’ll have to accept the work I’ve done and then do all the other stuff, like producing and mixing. 

“There’s a few songs that I’m really proud of and I want to crack the codes production-wise on a few songs.”

Keogh co-wrote and produced “Missing Piece” with Aotearoa pop master Joel Little, whose credits include Lorde, Broods, Daniel Johns and Taylor Swift. Despite working with such a decorated songwriter, Keogh says the primary goal is to preserve and amplify his individual characteristics.

“I look back at some of the songs that I’ve written and the ones with the most pure fingerprint of me, you’re extra proud of them because no one will really put words together exactly the way you do, even if you’re saying something that’s been said a million times before.”

Eight years removed from the multi-platinum, globe-conquering success of “Riptide”, “Missing Piece” sounds like vintage Vance Joy—i.e. a song built around acoustic guitars, four-on-the-floor rhythms and hushed verses that give way to a cresting chorus with mass sing-along potential.

“I’m happy that I didn’t decide to get rid of all the guitars and I just played the rhythm that I’ve always played,” Keogh says. “Sometimes you think just because you’ve done something a lot, people will be like, ‘You’ve done that a million times.’ It’s hard to know how to pick that line, but I just felt reassured by releasing that song and it not being a massive detour.”

I’ve been talking about doing a tour like this one for years, so it’s incredibly exciting that it’s becoming a reality. I love touring in Australia and can’t wait to really explore the country on this extended tour, playing not just the cities but also the regional areas too … It’s been way too long since I’ve been on tour in Australia so I cannot wait to re-connect with everyone again and play some new songs as well as the favourites. The tour announcement comes off the back of Vance Joy’s whopping five ARIA Award nominations, including Best Artist, Best Pop Release for ‘Missing Piece’, and Song of the Year.

Vance Joy has had two number one albums – 2014’s  Dream Your Life Away  and 2018’s  Nation of Two . He’s won two ARIA awards and ten of his songs are now ARIA-certified platinum or multi-platinum, including his breakout hit ‘Riptide’.

He has performed at some of the biggest stages and festivals in the world, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Splendour in the Grass – as well as supporting the likes of Taylor Swift and P!NK on their stadium tours.

So it’s going to be pretty nice enjoying his incredible catalogue of songs in so many unforgettable settings. We’re already preparing for the singalongs.

Vance Joy will bring his Long Way Home Tour to stages around Australia from September to November 2022. Tickets are on sale from Friday 12 November.
