The Most Comfortable and Best Shoes for a Cruise (14 Options)

When packing for your next family cruise, the shoes you pack may not be the first thing you consider. After all, you’ll want to make sure you have everything that you need for formal nights, themed dinners, shore excursions, and ship activities. For me at least, shoes are the last thing I consider.

It’s important, however, that you pack the right and best shoes for a cruise . There are limited options to purchase replacement pairs of shoes on a cruise ship. In addition, you’ll actually be doing quite a bit of walking, and will want to be comfortable. Some areas of a ship may be a little slippery (especially the stairs and pool deck), so it’s important that you pack shoes with good grips.

Things to Consider When Choosing The Best Shoes for Your Next Cruise

Packing shoes can be annoying because they often take up lots of space in your luggage. Because of that, I generally recommend that you wear the biggest shoes that you are bringing if you run out of room in your bags.

We also recommend packing your shoes in shoe bags, which can keep your dirty soles off of your clothes. These can be purchased in many stores, and there are some options on Amazon . They are different from a packing cube – instead, they are more of a reusable bag.

For the purposes of this post, we are looking at cruises to the Caribbean or other warm-weather destinations. If you are sailing on an Alaskan cruise, you will most likely need warmer shoes.

Before you go, I recommend looking at your cruise itinerary to make sure you know what type of dress code you may have to follow. While I never recommend overpacking, sometimes it’s best to bring an extra pair if you aren’t sure if you’ll need them. If you are doing a strenuous excursion like Dunn’s River Falls, for instance, you’ll need a pair of shoes with good traction. This list doesn’t include those specific types of shoes.

In addition to the types of shoes, you’ll want to make sure you pack shoes that match your cruise outfits. I generally bring shoes in a neutral color – like black, tan, white, and navy blue. Most of the shoes we have listed below come in different colors, so choose one of the color options that work with most of your clothes. Some cruise lines are more formal than others so do some research before you purchase shoes and/or pack.

If you are buying any new shoes for your Caribbean cruise, it’s a good idea to buy them in advance and try them out. One person’s comfortable pair of shoes may be your uncomfortable shoes. Break them in before walking long distances on vacation.

Here are some of the types of shoes you should consider packing for a cruise, as well as some of our favorite specific shoes. If you have a favorite that we didn’t include, leave us a comment below.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

You’ll want to have some comfortable walking shoes for your cruise. In general, these are shoes that you can wear when touring the local port areas on cruise excursions, for working out, and whenever you may need some extra arch support. You’ll want something that is easy to walk in, and steady on the cobblestone streets you may encounter in ports.

I typically wear sneakers/running shoes to fly, and on my first day on the cruise. While I usually only wear them again when I need to, they are good to have. This is especially important if you have any action activities on your agenda – things like zip lining or rock climbing where you’ll be required to wear close-toed shoes.

I wouldn’t recommend buying any new shoes specifically for this purpose. You are likely to have the perfect pair of sneakers in your closet. However, if you are looking for new shoes, I really love my On Cloud sneakers, which are extremely comfortable for travel.

I own the On Cloud 5 shoes , and these are what I wear for theme park touring, neighborhood walking, flying, and for the first day on a cruise. Hoka is another popular running shoe brand, I find they have good arch support and are comfortable for running. Both of these brands offer different styles.

Flip Flops and/or Water Shoes

There’s a lot of water associated with cruise ships, especially when you are sailing into the warm weather. You’ll want to have some sort of flip-flops or water shoes to wear when on the pool decks, going into the hot tubs, visiting the spa, or going to a beach in port. Again, be sure these aren’t too slippery.

If you have more adventurous water activities on your agenda, like snorkeling, for instance, you may prefer a more solid water shoe than flip-flops. I generally just bring one pair of flip flops, but if you plan to wear them for most of the vacation, you could bring more than one.

Dress Shoes

Depending on the cruise line you are sailing on, the dress code for the formal night may vary. There may also be a dress code specific to any specialty or deluxe dining that you have reserved. In general, flip-flops are generally not allowed, although dressy flip-flops are sometimes accepted. High heels can be a good idea, as long as you feel comfortable walking in them.

I generally wear somewhat casual, comfortable sandals as my dressy shoes on a cruise. Here are some of my favorite options:

• Sam Edelman Bay – these are my favorite – they are very versatile shoes and while they aren’t too formal, they are dressy. They work with both more formal and casual outfits
• Fit Flops – another one of my favorites – there are different styles, including some dressier ones
• Jack Rogers – these are a great choice, they are a classic warm-weather sandal
• Tory Burch Miller Sandal – these are almost iconic sandals that look great with shorts and dresses
• OluKai Moku Pae – these are men’s dress sneakers not dress shoes but can pass as dressy and are a good choice

Ballet Flats

If you are bringing other dress shoes, you may not need ballet flats . But they are easy to pack and very versatile. I generally like wearing them when my feet are tired from wearing my other shoes and I just want some flat comfortable shoes. Here are some of our favorite ballet flats:

The minimum shoes to pack for a cruise are two pairs. Aim for a comfortable walking shoe or sandal and a dressier shoe such as a ballet flat or low heeled wedges to wear for dinner. 

However, the majority of our readers agree that three is the magic number of shoes to bring for a cruise. It’s best to travel with one pair of sneakers/athletic shoes, a pair of sandals, or other flats (that can you dress up when need be), and a pair of flip flops or water shoes . Wear the heaviest shoes while traveling to make your luggage less of a burden. 

Of course, if you can’t live without a pair of heels, an example of one reader’s packing list includes one pair of heels, flip flops, and KEEN Newport water sandals for hiking and walking to replace the need for sneakers . 

One big no-no? Readers caution to stay away from heavy boots—unless you are doing some major hiking or climbing—leave those at home!

Though shoes for a cruise will be more compact than boots, they still need to be adequately packed, especially if you’re trying to pack light and avoid a shoe poking through a bag. To make it easier, start by choosing a container such as a shoe bag or a packing cube , then pack according to your type of luggage.

Whether you have a front loading or top loading backpack , it’s crucial to put your shoes first, at the bottom. If you’re planning to pack shoes in a rolling carry-on , remember that it stands sideways, so it’s important to note how it functions when it is upright. Most often, your shoes will need to be packed close to the wheels, so that the luggage maintains its balance in transit.

What Shoes to Bring for a Cruise (for day, evening & shore excursions)

When packing for a cruise, shoes are unfortunately often an afterthought. However, there’s nothing worse than bringing uncomfortable shoes or even forgetting the shoes you need to go with your cruise outfits. Knowing what shoes to bring on a cruise is important. 

I love shoes, and definitely make room for them as I’m packing for a cruise. While we don’t want to overpack, bringing shoes that are comfortable, versatile and stylish is a must.

In this post, I share the types of shoes you’ll want to bring on your cruise for daytime and evening, and for casual to formal nights . As well, I’ll answer some frequently asked questions and share some helpful cruise packing tips .

What Shoes to Pack for a Cruise

How many pairs of shoes should you bring on a cruise vacation? That depends who you ask, however, in my experience having between 4 and 6 pairs of shoes for a 7-14 day cruise is about right.

You could get away with 3 pairs, if you’re packing very light for a cruise . However, if you like a bit of flexibility and enjoy pairing different shoe styles with your cruise outfits, you’ll want to bring at least 4.

My feet and ankles sometimes get swollen on a cruise , so I like to change shoes between the day and evening, and even have some open back shoes just in case.

Shoe Packing List for a Cruise

Here are the types of shoes to pack for a Caribbean or warm weather cruise . This list will work equally well for Bahamas , Bermuda and even Mediterranean cruises .

If cruising to Alaska or in cool or wet weather, make sure to bring warm shoes for outdoors, and/or ankle boots.

• Sneakers or walking shoes
• casual sandals or wedges

Dressy shoes

• Water shoes (optional)

Best Shoes for Cruise Vacations

I usually bring 2 pairs of flip flops . They take such little room and can even be tossed into a tote bag when on a shore excursion , just in case your walking shoes give you a blister.

Ofcourse, if you’re not planning to spend much time at the pool on cruise sea days , or are trying to avoid overpacking for your cruise , one pair of flip flops or thongs will be fine.

Most comfortable flip flop

Trendy platform sandals

These trendy Reef sandals are so comfortable, and really are perfect for shore excursions, when you may do a bit of walking and shopping in the cruise port.

Espadrilles

Espadrilles look stylish and are perfect for a Caribbean or a Bermuda cruise. They can be worn for casual and smart casual evenings on a cruise , however will also look cute with nice shorts for a day of shopping in port.

A good tip for bringing shoes on a cruise, is to choose neutral colors for versatility – think beige, tan, and even gold. In many cases, a good pair of neutral sandals, can be worn with shorts during the day and with a casual dress or jeans in the evening.

Don’t forget to pack your gym shoes! Cruise ships have amazing fitness centers and a jogging track. If you work out at home, you can definitely keep up with your fitness routine on a cruise .

Wedge shoes are my personal favorite casual, but cute shoe to wear on a cruise. If you like a bit of a heel, but still want stability, wedges just work. They go with dressy shorts, a casual dress and can even dress up a pair of dark jeans and a flowy top.

The 5 Essential Pairs of Shoes You Need for Your Cruise

The less you pack, the happier you will be toting that luggage through the airport and when storing your stuff in your cabin. Those shoes can make up for a lot of space and weight in your luggage! Mishandling the packing of your “foot apparel” can cost you comfort and extra baggage fees.

Are you a first-time cruiser or still relatively new at packing for a cruise? Or maybe you have a bad shoe habit and know you need an intervention? If any of those are true, this blog was written for you!

I was part of a group on a cruise and struck up a friendship with two sisters who were also part of the group. During the cruise, I stopped by their cabin with them on the way to an event one night. There was a LINEUP of shoes along the one wall, all belonging to only one of them. Holy cow! She had to be traveling with one suitcase just for shoes. Sure, we JOKE about such things, but I didn’t think about anyone actually doing that.

You may be thinking, “Connie, what’s wrong with that? I like my shoes!” Friend, if you are happy lugging lots of shoes, I’m not going to try to stop you. BUT if you are trying to become a “lighter packer,” let me try to help you. These are the shoes you need to pack for your cruise.

The 5 Essential Shoes Needed for Most Cruises

With few exceptions, you need to pack only 4-5 pairs of shoes for your cruise.

1. A pair of comfortable walking shoes.

In my case, that’s a pair of sneakers. (Tennis shoes or gym shoes depending on where you live.) If you’ll be walking a lot in ports-of-call or on a large ship, you’ll appreciate having comfortable shoes. Especially if you’ll be walking a lot more than you do at home.

2. A pair of flip-flops or sandals.

These can be interchanged with your “walking shoes” when you want a change and worn on the beach. Plus, if you are someone who doesn’t like to be barefoot, they can double as “slippers” in your ship cabin or hotel room.

3. A pair of versatile casual shoes that can work with shorts by day and casual evening clothes.

For women, these can be flats, low heels or wedges. For men, something like boat shoes, casual loafers, or slip-ons.

4. A pair of dress shoes for dressier or formal outfits.

I’ve never been on a cruise (up to 10 days long) for which I needed more than one pair of dress shoes. If this suggestion is causing you to break out into a sweat, we may compromise. Give the thought some time. (My previously mentioned cruise friend, who I think the world of, would probably be gasping for air right now.) If it’s still upsetting, add one more pair of dress shoes.

Limiting your dress shoes is much easier if you bring shoes in a neutral color (i.e. black, tan, navy) and have coordinated your clothing to stay within a color palette.

Also, I suggest that women stick with sensible dress shoes. On a moving ship isn’t the best time to break out your stilettos.

If your cruise is aboard an expedition ship or sailing yacht, you might swap out your “dress shoes” for a second pair of casual shoes that can carry you through the evenings. Or travel with one less pair of shoes.

5. Your fifth pair is a bit of a wildcard based on where you’re cruising and the type of activities you’ll be taking part in.

For instance, if you’ll be hiking in Iceland, bring hiking boots. If you will be walking on a glacier in Alaska, consider waterproof hiking boots or snow boots. For wet landings off a zodiac on a Galápagos cruise, you’ll need water shoes, water sandals, or deck shoes. Tevas and Chacos are popular water sandals among travelers needing water shoes that they also want to hike in.

How to Pack Your Shoes

Of the five pairs of shoes you bring, you will wear one pair and pack the other four pairs in your luggage. Yes, your five sets of shoes include the pair on your feet.

Be sure your shoes are cleaned from obvious dirt.

You can make some extra space by rolling socks and belts and putting them into the shoes.

Put each pair into a plastic bag like a grocery store bag or into a shoe bag to protect your clothing. For large, bulkier shoes, you may wish to put each shoe into a separate bag so you can stuff your shoes into empty corners of your suitcase or between piles of clothing.

Additional Tips

It goes without saying that these should all be shoes that you have already broken in. Don’t risk your feet over new shoes. You don’t want to be miserable, and neither do you want an infected sore.

Even worn-in shoes can cause a nasty blister when doing a lot more walking in them than usual. I suggest bringing some moleskin “just in case” you have difficulty. Should I Buy Good Feet On The Cruise Ship? (Explained)

You just got on board the cruise ship and one of the personal trainers wants to sell you a Good Feet arch support. You may be asking yourself should you buy inserts while being on board or maybe there are better deals directly from the Good Feet Store?

In general, you should buy Good Feet arch support while being on the cruise ships, as long as you feel the difference wearing them. The arch supports on board are slightly cheaper compared to the one from the store, but it’s exactly the same product. However, buying on the ship means you won’t get a lifetime warranty and you cannot get a 60 days refund.

This is my brief answer, but if you wanna know all the pros and cons of getting Good Feet arch support on a cruise ship, keep reading.

Buying Good Feet arch support on the cruise

When you’re on the cruise it’s not hard to see the people offering free postural analysis or footprint analysis (the same procedure is when you visit the Good Feet Store). A personal trainer usually puts a piece of paper on a blue ink pad, covers it, and asks you to walk on it.

The next step is to check how your feet redistribute the pressure, followed by a quick balance demonstration with and without the orthotics. The idea of footprint analysis is to analyze your pressure points and fit you into one of the Good Feet arch support orthotics.

Good Feet arch support on cruise ships is exactly the same product that you get in the Good Feet store, however, there are some differences (which I will explain).

Should you buy good feet on a cruise ship?

You can buy good feet from the personal trainer on board a cruise ship, as long as you feel it makes a noticeable difference (e.g. less pain when walking). The arch support that you will find on the cruise is the GoodFeet SL4000 EnduraStep.

The difference between EnduraStep and Good Feet from the store is that the store offers a larger variety of inserts, as well as a 3-step program that is designed to reposition your foot, maintain the correct alignment, and helps to relax the arches, tendons, and ligaments.

The EnduraStep is one type of arch support “the maintainer” (step two) that focuses on maintaining the arch infrastructure, without correcting the foot position.

Yes, this arch support is legit and it works.

In other words, this arch supports works very well, as long as you use it and keep it in your shoes. It’s not gonna make permanent changes in your gait, so the moment you stop using it, it will default to your normal foot position.

Good Feet on cruise ships are cheaper than in the store

One of the advantages of buying the Good Feet EnduraStep while being on the cruise ship is you will pay less money and you won’t need to pay any taxes.

Good Feet store sells arch supports as an individual product, as well as part of their signature 3-Step System at a higher price.

The price for Good Feet EnduraStep on board a cruise ship is $199 per pair without having to pay an additional tax (cruise lines, like other shipping companies, can evade taxes, legally).

The price for the Good Feets at the store ranges between $200-$500 per pair, plus you need to pay taxes, which will vary, depending on your state.

If you want to save money without compromising on the value, I would definitely consider getting a pair from the ship.

Good Feet on cruise ships have no warranty

Buying Good Feet in the store offers a little extra peace of mind becasue the company gives an unconditional lifetime guarantee for some of their orthotics (of course, these inserts are more expensive).

To learn more about what is an unconditional lifetime warranty, I visited the Good Feet store and the store manager. She explained to me that if for any reason something happens with the product (defect or damage), the store will happily replace the pair for me.

(No hidden fees or some tricky terms and conditions).

On the other hand, buying good feet on the ship gives you no warranty. This means once you buy the product and you get off the ship, you won’t be able to get a new pair or money back in case something happens.

Good Feet store requires booking an appointment

To buy inserts from the Good feet store, you need to book an appointment in advance and spend 30-60 minutes for the whole process. In general, that’s not a big deal if you have a store somewhere close by.

Good feet stores also do walk-in consultations as long as they have an empty spot.

However, if the nearest store is miles away, then you may need to add all the extra time for commuting.

From this perspective, getting Good Feet from the ship is much easier because the guys do complimentary foot scan every day, without the need to book an appointment. They also offer free educational seminars and answer all the questions that people may have.

Good Feet EnduraStep has fewer velcros

All of the arch supports comes with a bunch of velcro stickers. The idea of velcro attachment is to keep them stable in your shoes and prevent them from moving around. This also allows you to wear them with open toes footwear like sandals.

You need two pieces of velcro for each pair of shoes. The more shoes you have, the more velcro stickers you need.

The good thing about the Good Feet store is they have a lot of velcro patches (enough for 4 pairs of shoes) and if you ask, they are always happy to give you more.

On the other hand, Good Feet EnduraStep SL4000 comes with 2 pairs of velcro (enough for 2 pairs of shoes).

You won’t get any discounts from the cruise ship

Good Feet from the cruise line have a set price for retail products so don’t expect to get a discount. Good Feet store does not have a lot of deals either (as far as I know, I haven’t studied this a ton).

One of the things you can do when buying arch support on board is to ask the trainers for some perks. These guys cannot reduce the retail price, but they can offer you a complimentary consultation, body fat analysis, or give a spa discount for some treatments.

These guys get a commission from the sale of Good Feet. If you’re into fitness, you can also ask them to give you a discount for pilates, yoga, or spin class.

I’ve been using Good Feet arch support since 2014 and it’s been a game changer for me. It helped me not only reduce my lower back pain but also get rid of plantar fasciitis that bothered me for years.

These are the same quality products but have some differences when it comes to variety, warranty, and price. If you’re on the fence, I recommend you get a pair while on board becasue it will save you money, and time and you can get a discount on other spa or fitness perks.

P acking for any type of vacation can be stressful, but packing for a cruise, where you likely won’t be able to pop into a Target or schedule an Amazon delivery to replace a missing item mid-trip, only adds to the anxiety. Frequent travelers are likely to have a cruise packing list that outlines what outfits to wear in each port, swimsuits to sport at the pool, and comfortable shoes to wear around the ship, all waiting to be marked off as you place them into your suitcase.

I do this too, but I also have a less expected list of the items that are going to make my cruise easier, more organized, and in the end, more fun. After sailing on over 50 cruises on lines like Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, all of these items have become must-haves, whether I’m embarking on a three-night sailing to the Bahamas or a week-long jaunt around the Mediterranean. Over-the-door hanging shoe organizer

The number one thing I always make sure I pack in my suitcase is an over-the-door hanging shoe organizer —but I don’t use it for my sandals. I put this to work keeping small things like hair brushes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and Band-Aids off of the bathroom counters and in a set spot in the room. If I’m cruising with other people, everyone gets a row or two to use for their things. I always make sure that I bring strong magnetic hooks to hang this up with too, because most cruise lines will not let you put tape on the walls or use the hooks that come with the organizer since it could damage the door frame and paint.

Collapsible mesh laundry hamper

I hate seeing dirty laundry around my room, but I also don’t want to pull my suitcase out every night to load in clothes that I’m done wearing for the cruise. That’s why I always pack a collapsible mesh laundry hamper. After I unpack my suitcase and hang all of my clothes up in the closet or place things into drawers, I find a spot in the closet where the hamper can sit without being in the way of the doors closing. Each night I toss my worn clothes into the basket; after a few days, when the basket is full, I take a few minutes to fold and place dirty clothes back into my suitcase. The best part about this hamper is that it folds flat and is super lightweight so it doesn’t add any bulk to my suitcase while in transit.

Fridge magnets

The key to not feeling overwhelmed by stuff every time you walk into your room? Staying organized. One way that I like to keep things off of the desk or floor is with clip-style fridge magnets. These are great for larger items that you will use almost every day, like hats and swimsuit coverups . I also like to use these to keep important papers like excursion tickets, daily schedules, or debarkation instructions in one spot so I’m not ruffling through a cluttered desk looking for the sheets that I need.

Cruise ships provide towels for guests to use at the pool or take off of the ship for excursions—and while this is convenient, the downside is they all look alike. One easy way to make sure you know where you’re sitting is with beach towel clips, which come in a wide range of colors and designs, from neutral hues to these fun flamingo and margarita–shaped ones that would fit right in on a tropical cruise. Not only are these clips a good visual indicator of where you’re sitting, they're also great for keeping your towel on your chair should it get a little windy.

A power strip

There are never enough places to plug in devices in a stateroom, especially on older ships that don’t have USB outlets anywhere in sight. That’s why I always bring a power strip that has traditional outlets and USB outlets. Just be sure that the cord you buy is cruise ship approved (you can usually find info on this in a cruise line’s FAQ or prohibited items section), and does not have a surge protector built into the strip. I tend to plug the power strip into the outlet closest to the desk so everyone in my travel party can use it to charge their phones and smart watches all in one spot.

Thank you notes

I recently started packing thank you cards to write notes to the crew onboard who went above and beyond to make my vacation even better. I always buy blank stationery that just has a border around the card so I have plenty of room to write down how much they meant to me or something that they did to make me feel special. I hand out the cards at the end of the cruise on the last day. (If you forget to bring a pen with you onboard and there’s not one in your room, the guest services desk usually has a few extras to hand out.)

Door decorations

Door decorations are a fun way to add a little pizzazz to your stateroom door without much effort. In fact, on many of the big cruise lines like Disney, Royal Caribbean , and Carnival Cruise Line, door decorations are a big deal with passengers packing custom magnets, lights, and banners to hang around their section of the hallway. I always try to bring something for the door, not only because it looks cute, but because it’s a good way to easily spot my room after a long day in port. Just be sure you’re getting decorations that adhere to each cruise line’s decorating policy, which can often be found in an FAQ area of the cruise’s website.

Sergei Pavlovich Korolev – the Father of Practical Astronautics

Sergei Korolev (1907 – 1966), Soviet Union 1969 CPA 3731 stamp

On January 12, 1907, lead Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer during the Space Race Sergei Korolev was born. Korolev is regarded by many as the “father of practical astronautics “. He was involved in the development of the R-7 Rocket , Sputnik 1 ,[ 1 ] launching Laika , Belka and Strelka  and the first human being, Yuri Gagarin ,[ 2 ] into space.

“Today we are witnesses to the fulfillment of the dream that occupied some outstanding people, among them Tsiolkovsky. He had prophesied that mankind will not stay on Earth forever. Sputnik is the first confirmation of his predictions. The opening up of space has begun.” – Sergei Korolev, on the night of October 5, 1957, after the successful launch of Sputnik 1.[8]

Sergei Korolev – Youth and Education

Korolev was born in Zhytomyr , the capital of Volhynian Governorate of the Russian Empire. His parents, Russian teachers Maria Nikolaevna Balanina (née Moskalenko),  from a wealthy merchant family with Greek and Cossack roots, and Pavel Yakovlevich Korolev, who was  of Belarusian origin, separated just three years after his birth. Korolev grew up with his grandparents in Neshin . When he was ten years old, the family moved to Odessa . There he completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and roofer. Korolev showed an early interest in aviation and, in addition to his job, worked at the local glider club, constructing his first glider K-5 at the age of 17. In 1925, Korolev began studying at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute . When the Kiev faculty was closed, he transferred to Moscow Technical University (MWTU) in 1926 and graduated. Before that, he completed an internship at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (ZAGI), where he came into contact with the design of powered aircraft. In 1929, together with S. N. Lyushin, Korolev developed and built the Koktebel glider. In the same year, under the guidance of Andrei Tupolev, Korolev created his first powered aircraft SK-4 as his diploma thesis.

First Experiments with Rockets

In the 1930s, Korolev began building rockets as part of MosGIRD, a group founded in 1931 to research recoil propulsion systems. There he received essential impulses for his later work from Friedrich Zander . Together with Zander, whom he considered a mentor, he was involved in the design and construction of the first Soviet hybrid rockets GIRD-09 and GIRD-X , among others. In 1933, he moved to the Rocket Research Institute (RNII) and became head of the Rocket Missile Department in 1934. In the same year, his scientific treatise The Rocket Flight into the Stratosphere was published.

The Great Terror

While working on the RP-318-I rocket-powered glider, Korolyev was arrested by the NKVD’s secret political police during the Great Terror on June 27, 1938. After two days of torture and threats against his family, he signed a confession in which he was forced to identify himself as a member of a counterrevolutionary Trotskyist conspiracy and a participant in acts of sabotage to obstruct development work. He had been denounced under duress by Valentin Glushko ,[ 3 ] who had been arrested three months earlier and who himself spent the period until 1944 in prison. Although innocent, Korolev was sentenced without formal trial on to ten years of hard labor in the gulag and five years of loss of civil rights. After spending time in several prisons and prolonged transportation, he arrived at the notorious Maldyak labor camp in 1939, where he nearly starved to death and became so ill with scurvy that his lower jaw was severely damaged and he lost many teeth.

In the First Circle of Hell

Through interventions of his mother with the support of the well-known pilots Mikhail Gromov and Valentina Grisodubova, the USSR Supreme Court overturned the previous sentence and Korolev was recalled from Maldyak only in November 1939. After renewed interventions by his mother and Gromov with NKVD People’s Commissar Lavrenti Beria , he was sent to the special design office of aircraft designer Andrei Tupolev , who had already supervised Korolyov’s thesis and was also imprisoned. The ZKB-29 special camp for scientists and engineers was under the control of the NKVD and was described from personal experience by Alexander Solzhenitsyn in the novel The First Circle of Hell . The ZKB-29 developed the Tupolev Tu-2 dive bomber in Omsk in September 1942.

Petlyakov Pe-2, co-developed by Sergei Korolev

Korolev applied for a job at an aircraft engine plant in Kazan , where Glushko headed the OKB-16 special design bureau for rocket engines under Sharashka conditions. Korolev participated in the development of the Petlyakov Pe-2 multirole aircraft to improve takeoff performance and climb performance with a switchable rocket engine. In 1944, Korolyov and Glushko were paroled from prison early and continued their work on rocket developments as employed engineers of OKB-16. However, Korolev was not officially rehabilitated until April 18, 1957. Korolev’s six-year imprisonment in the Gulag was erased from Communist accounts of the history of technology.

Becoming Chief Designer

After World War II, Korolev rose to become the chief designer of the initially military-only Soviet missile program within the NII (Scientific Research Institute). Korolev’s identity was kept secret during his lifetime, and in public he was referred to only anonymously as the “chief designer.” Korolev’s goal was to develop a civilian rocket program. In 1945, now holding the rank of colonel in the Red Army, he was ordered to Soviet headquarters in Berlin with other engineers and technicians. He was given the task of studying the German rocket program and locating associates of rocket engineer Wernher von Braun who remained in Germany.

The Soviets placed a priority on reproducing lost documentation on the A4 rocket, and studying the various parts and captured manufacturing facilities. That work continued in East Germany until late 1946, when 2,000+ German scientists and engineers were sent to the USSR through Operation Osoaviakhim . Most of the German experts, Helmut Gröttrup being an exception, were engineers and technicians involved in wartime mass-production of A4, and they had not worked directly with Wernher von Braun. Korolev returned to the Soviet Union in 1946 with plans of German designs and German rocket designers. Among others, Wernher von Braun’s assistant Helmut Gröttrup and aerodynamicist Werner Albring worked on rocket technology development under Korolev’s direction in Kaliningrad (in Moscow oblast) and on Gorodomlya Island (now Solnetchny settlement) in Lake Seliger during this period. The first design resulting from this cooperation was the R-1 rocket of 1948, a copy of the German A4 based on materials available in the Soviet Union. Unlike the U.S., which brought German scientists to the U.S. with its Operation Overcast and ensured their naturalization and retention in the U.S. as early as 1946 with Operation Paperclip, the Soviet Union merely siphoned off their knowledge and used it in the crucial steps for spaceflight.

The Soviet Space Programme

Among Korolyov’s greatest achievements were the construction of the R-7 – the world’s first intercontinental ballistic missile – and the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957,[ 1 ] but most importantly, the first space flight by a human, Yuri Gagarin , in 1961.[ 2 ] The R-7  was a two-stage rocket with a maximum payload of 5.4 tons, sufficient to carry the Soviets’ bulky  nuclear bomb  an impressive distance of 7,000 kilometres. However, despite the Soviet R-7 initial success, it experienced later failures as it was not intended to be a practical weapon. Sputnik 1 was designed and constructed in less than a month with Korolev personally managing the assembly at a hectic pace. The satellite was a simple polished metal sphere no bigger than a beach ball, containing batteries that powered a transmitter using 4 external communication antennas. Sputnik 1 was successfully completed and launched into space on 4 October 1957 using a rocket that had successfully launched only once before. After gaining approval from the government, a modified version of Korolev’s R-7 was used to launch Yuri Gagarin into orbit on 12 April 1961, which was before the United States was able to put Alan Shepard into space.

Korolev’s group was also working on ambitious programs for missions to Mars and Venus , putting a man in orbit, launching communication, spy and weather satellites, and making a soft-landing on the Moon.

Health Problems and Early Death

In December 1960, Korolev suffered a heart attack, which was followed by others. His cardiac arrhythmias were joined by internal bleeding and intestinal problems. Korolyev was admitted to a Moscow hospital. Doctors were going to remove painful hemorrhoids in a routine operation in January 1966, but in the meantime they discovered a large tumor in his colon and put him under general anesthesia. Tracheal intubation, necessary due to circulatory weakness, failed due to scurvy-related jaw abnormality as a late consequence of Gulag imprisonment; this caused his death on January 14, 1966. The Soviet government honored him by burying his urn in the Kremlin wall. In 1996, the city of Kaliningrad in Moscow Oblast, where he headed the experimental design bureau OKB-1 as chief designer from 1950, was renamed after him.

Losing the Race to the Moon

With Korolev’s death, the Soviet space and lunar programs suffered a bitter loss. Although work on the N1 lunar rocket was continued by his collaborator Vasily Mishin , it was discontinued in 1974 after several launch failures.[ 4 ] The identity of the chief designer remained a state secret in the Soviet Union during his lifetime. While in the U.S. his adversary Wernher von Braun made a high-profile appearance in the press and on television, Korolev was not known even in his own country. When, after the successful launch of Sputnik 1, the Nobel Prize Committee asked Nikita Khrushchev for the name of the chief designer, he replied that it had been the work of the entire Soviet people and that they had thus deserved the award. Only on the occasion of the state funeral in Moscow was this secret revealed.
