Top 5 Bags for Travel

Are you tired of lugging around heavy suitcases while traveling by plane? As a pilot’s wife who’s been packing for 20 years, I know just how important it is to have the right bag for airline travel. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the best 5 bags for traveling with only a carry-on suitcase. TIP: I use all of these bags for a flight within the last year depending on my travel outfit or mood or destination.

1. Compression cube bags

Travel tip for compression cubes is that they compress the air between your clothes with minimal wrinkles. You can pack more in them.

I pack a top or 2 with a couple pairs of undies in case the airline misplaces my carry-on bag that got checked last minute because of no overhead bin space in the airplane. That way you are set for a couple of days during your vacation.

You can organize one of the set of 6 cubes per family member or for different packing methods.

2. Crossbody bags

The easiest way to travel light is with a crossbody bag that is lightweight but holds a maximum amount of travel essentials. I have this brown one in black. There are so many pockets. I used to fit two glasses cases in it, but now that I used the double sided case, I can fit more in it when touring on vacation.

I may be obsessed with crossbody bag replacement straps . They blend with my travel outfits for that destination and are an inexpensive treat before a new trip.

Slash-resistant straps made me purchase this small but roomy RFID purse . Key feature in a crossbody bag is that the zippers go over the edges. This feature allows you to open the purse wide for quick access while traveling. AND my favorite part is that the fabric is smooth and shiny unlike other rfid bags.

TIP: always save room in your personal item bag in case you have a strict gate agent that tells you you only can have 2 bags while walking into the airplane. But as soon as you get to your seat, you can take it out fyi.

3. Backpack

For your personal item bag that you carry into the airplane, the backpack is one of the best for several reasons.

They allow you to be hands-free when walking the aisle of the airplane.

This one and my other favorite backpack has around 17 pockets for many travel needs! Note that the striped one has a bar at the top which sometimes I am not in the mood for. These are both the 15.6 laptop version.

But to help with in-flight organization I always pack:

4. Pouches for a Flight

Small pouches can fit into empty pockets of space in a carry-on bag or in a personal item. I have a set of 3 pouches to pack toiletries . TIP: pack one pouch in your backpack for the end of a long-haul flight and pack the rest in your carry-on for the hotel.

These small pouches hold headphones or feminine items or sugar / electrolyte packets.

5. Carry-On Luggage

To save money most passengers seem to be packing in only carry-on bags. I have a whole room of suitcases now that I travel with. I urge you to go into a store like Macy’s or JC Penney (which I stumbled upon last winter and hit pay dirt) to try out the important features for your air travel.

If I had to choose, the best wheels out of my 6 suitcases is the carry-on with the outer pocket because of rugged wheels . But if you need more space the same wheels are on mine that has no outer pocket. I do think this carry-on gives you more space with the same wheels for cobblestone roads.

HOUSTON – Laurie is a Houston pilot wife who has garnered over sixteen million views on her YouTube channel, Travel Tips by Laurie, showing regular folks how to travel the globe without a worry in the world.

She stopped by Houston life with some of her top packing tips to take the stress out of flying during Thanksgiving week, one of the busiest travel holidays of the year.

Her suggestions went from how to pack carry-on bags to outfit ideas that won’t cause delays while you go through airport security lines.

“Avoid wearing clothes that make the TSA alarms go off such as shirts with sequins and Christmas socks with metallic threading,” she said.

She also suggests “packing thin layers and using compression cubes to allow more space.”

And if you want to save even more space in your carry-on luggage, “take that compression cube out of the suitcase and pack it in the bottom of your backpack because you get more space, it gives backpack structure, and you get an extra outfit in case the luggage is lost,” said the former elementary school teacher who’s been traveling for over twenty years with her husband.

Hearing aid travel tips – Expert advice from Laurie Osterman

If you travel with a hearing impairment and wear hearing aids, this video can help you feel more confident when flying. YouTube travel expert Laurie Osterman, will teach you packing and travel tips, as well as hints for airport security, using hearing aids on the airplane and for when you are on vacation.

We know that many of you are busy planning summer trips, so we invited Laurie to share her advice and tips for traveling with a hearing impairment and while wearing hearing aids.

In her latest video (link below), she shares tips to help you feel more confident when flying. She will teach you packing and travel tips, as well as hints for airport security, using hearing aids on the airplane and for when you are on vacation.

Laurie has worn ReSound hearing aids for almost 6 years. She has worn the replaceable battery charged ones, but now she has rechargeable ReSound ONE hearing aids. Enjoy the video… we’ve captured some of her tips below so you can print them out.

Don’t forget that your audiologist or hearing care professional is always here to help. Please feel free to reach out to them with any questions you may have.

Tip #1 – Check hearing impaired section when you purchase airline tickets

Even if it is not something you are really worried about, it will help them know that you need to choose an aisle seat or sit near the front if those seats are still available. Laurie thinks that most will charge you more to sit up there, but if you do need to read lips that travel tip will help.

Tip #2 – Pack your hearing aid supplies in your personal item bag

Pack your hearing aid batteries and supplies in a case in your personal item bag, such as a backpack, tote, crossbody bag, or briefcase that can fit underneath the seat in front of you on the airplane. This is so your supplies do not get lost if they are in your checked luggage or if your carry-on suitcase does not fit in the overhead bins.
The transportation security administration (TSA) does not allow the rechargeable battery case to be packed in your checked luggage. It has to be checked in your personal item or carry-on suitcase as it has a lithium battery in it. Laurie recommends getting a tech organizer to place your rechargeable case and cords in to make it easily accessible while traveling.

Tip #3 – You do not have to take your hearing aids out during the airport screening

You do not have to take your hearing aids out or put them in the gray bin to go through airport screening or security at the airport.
Your hearing aids stay on your ears throughout the whole process of traveling, no matter where you may be.

Tip #4 – Do not wear earrings while traveling, especially if you are wearing a mask

Laurie does not recommend wearing earrings while you are traveling throughout the airport or on the airplanes, especially while wearing a mask. This is because they can get tangled and eventually lost while taking off your mask. Sometimes the same thing can happen if you wear hearing aids while wearing a mask.

Tip #5 – Use your hearing aids’ phone app

If your hearing aids can be controlled on your phone via an app like Laurie’s ReSound hearing aids can, you should be able to enjoy going to shows or being in crowded areas while you are on vacation. This is because the apps can help you control the noise, filter out the noise, filter background noise, and use speech focus at a restaurant.
You will be able to sit around a large table on a cruise ship at a show and hear everyone because you have the access and capability to control your hearing aids via the app to help you hear better.

Tip #6 – Download entertainment 24 to 36 hours before your flight

Some of the airplanes still use the back of the seat in front of you and actual headphones to allow you to watch entertainment on the flight. Some airlines will pass out Bluetooth ear buds for seat back entertainment, but that is newer technology.
If you cannot listen to a show through actual headphones, you can download Netflix videos, other shows or YouTube videos on your phones ahead of the flight. Laurie provides steps of how to do so in the video.
She recommends downloading the entertainment you want to watch on the airplane about 24 to 36 hours before your flight. When you are up in the airplane, your phone will be able to watch those shows you have downloaded onto your phone, even if it is in airplane mode.

Tip #7 – Get to know your airline’s app

Your airline’s app has all of your flight information. It will alert you to any gate changes (especially helpful if you cannot hear the gate airline agents in the concourse). It will also show you which carousel your bags will be unloaded.
The airline’s app will also be where you can watch their entertainment system.

Tip #8 – Protect your hearing aids while at the pool or the beach

It is also recommended to place the hearing aids in the plastic bag in another bag that is splash proof. She recommends getting a larger bag to fit other items to take so you do not lose anything you brought with.
Laurie recently got new rechargeable hearing aids from ReSound and her biggest fear is that she will lose the charger while on vacation. She asked her audiologist what she should do if that happens. She said to immediately email your audiologist so they can get you a replacement one for when you get back.

Laurie also provided three additional bonus tips to help protect your hearing aids, especially while traveling.

Bonus Tip #1 – Pack a valet tray that’s open while sleeping at night

When you are sleeping at night, you can pack a valet tray that is open. One reason Laurie likes these valet trays is that it packs flat, so it is not taking up space in your carry-on and they come in all different colors. It also protects your hearing aids and supplies if you like having water by your bed and your arm accidently knocks your glass over.

Bonus Tip #2 – Use a peanut butter lid for protection of hearing aids and supplies while sleeping

The great thing about the peanut butter lid is that it does not blend in with the granite countertop of the bedside table at the hotel so you will not forget what is in the peanut butter lid and that would protect it more from water on the surface of the bedside table.

Bonus Tip #3 – Use a thin scrap piece of fabric

If you cannot find a valet tray or peanut butter lid, you can pack a thin scrap piece of fabric for the same purpose of protection. Make sure it is a bright color, so it does not blend into the countertop.

Use colored packing cubes to organize your clothes. That way, you can pull out the “shirts” bag quickly without searching and dumping out an entire backpack. Around the World in 80 Jobs

Don’t bother with those fancy, expensive travel towels . Instead, get a sarong. It’s cheap and multi-use: use it as a wrap, lay it out for picnics or sunbathing, or dry off with it. They’re super light and dry quickly, even in humid places. For packing, invest in packing cubes ! They make packing and living out of a suitcase/backpack more organized and much easier. Bring a range of see-through plastic bags with you. Packing light provides you and your trip flexibility . Therefore, I pack mostly black or blue jeans and clothes and provide color with scarves and accessories. I am also a confirmed “roller”. Family Travel

No matter the climate I’m going to, I always travel with at least one scarf . It takes up virtually no room, and yet can have so many uses. One tip that’s probably been mentioned a lot, but I live by, is this: lots of layering options for the kids reduces the need to pack lots of warm clothes. I found all the tips very useful, I use some of them. I would like to add a few I use. Packing bijoux jewelry, I pass necklaces through a straw to prevent tangling, put rings and earrings seperately in small ziplocks then all together in a small cosmetic pouch and into my suitcase. For expensive jewelery I put it in a small cufflink box which accomodates two diamond rings, a medium sized locket and a brooch. This protects them from being compressed. Then I carry it in my handbag in a small zippered compartment. Hope this may help somebody.

Tips to save space in your suitcase

Roll the clothes instead of folding them. You can save your space and carry some extra items such as belt and pair of extra socks in your baggage.

Wear as much as you can rather than packing it. This doesn’t sound cool but it is one of the best trick. Wear extra clothes inside your over coat and later remove them once you are on your sear after boarding the flight. A little extra layer of clothes on your body will give you a lot of free space in your bag. Now you have some extra space in your suitcase to put some more items.

You can also use your pockets to hold small things rather than putting them in your luggage. You can even fold small clothing items and place them in large pockets of a jacket or cargo pants.

I just read this and must say, I should have done so a few weeks earlier 🙁

One thing I found interesting lately is to use tools for my packing. whattopackforatrip.com is one example but there are a few more. Can you do something like this too 🙂

Like one of your correspondents above said – practice pack and pitch. Any old clothes that are serviceable but may have a spot or are heavily worn get packed and pitched along the way. You can always tie a scarf so it covers a spot and you’re never going to see these people again. Your pitch will equal your stuff purchased. And stuff left in Peru, mark it trash bastuda, doesn’t worm its way back into your closet. I also just purchased an Elizabeth and Clarke unstainable tshirt and can’t wait to see if they work well.

when staying in a hotel, just below the peephole in the door, there is usually a sign describing protocol for emergencies. next to this sign is (usually) a card inserted with room prices, check-out times, etc. pull this card halfway out and use it to cover the peephole for privacy. this gave me peace of mind when my young daughter and I traveled alone. an alternative would be to cover the peephole with a small piece of blue painter’s tape. I also locked and bolted the door and placed the (empty) plastic trash can a few inches from the door before we went to bed. this would give us valuable seconds if someone tried to enter our room while we were asleep!

I always (always!) use a packing list for every trip and just tweak it each time based on where, when & how long the trip is. It’s divided into four sections.

Section 1 is for things I might need to have at the ready like passports, reservation paperwork, phone charger, antibacterial wipes, etc. This is basically my travel bag list.

Section 2 is for toiletries and rarely changes.

Section 3 is for planning outfits. I break it down with the itinerary for each day and what the expected weather will be, and then pre-plan out each outfit for each day/event, including belts, shoes and accessories. Keeping to this strict plan helps me from over-packing!

The fourth and final section is for anything extra, like a hat, gloves, undies, bras, etc. Also included in this section are little extras like small hand fans for hot & humid climates, a small baggie for the hotel remote control (one of the germiest things in your room), etc.

So many people recommend rolling clothes instead of folding, and I’ve even tried the “military” style you can learn on YouTube videos. However, I still find correct folding (eg, the KonMari method) makes my suitcase so much more calm and organized. And fewer wrinkles.

I like to carry a backpack on the plane for all my stuff. Instead of dealing with a purse AND a backpack, I just put my necessary purse contents (wallet, smartphone, meds, etc.) in the backpack and pack my purse in my suitcase.

I always bring a few wooden clothespins. I need the room very dark to sleep and the clothespins sometimes are perfect to hold a drape together. Of course they can be used in the obvious ways hand clothes to dry off a hangar or towel rack.

I try to lay out everything I want to pack, including cosmetic bag, etc., then live with it, at home, for the amount of time I’m going to be gone. Anything that doesn’t get used doesn’t go in the suitcase, and it’s an easy way to see if everything fits together. Takes discipline to do this, but it’s a good reality check.

That is dedication but if you do it once, you can keep reusing the same things for future trips. Great tip!

Great tips from everyone this is really going to help me this summer other thing when you make a list make sure you check off the important things first like start off with carry on luggage essentials any way this is my favorite site to go to when I’m having trouble packing oh almost forgot make your luggage noticble by putting ribbons and shoelaces so that way you would not have to worry when you get to the airport

When going on a vacation where swimming is involved, I pack a lightweight, cheap or well used towel. Then, if I want to swim after the noon checkout time, I give away the wet towel at the end of the day.

Another useful and small, lightweight item is a little sponge (the little pink, yellow or green ones). They are incredibly useful, take almost zero room, and save towels if the floor gets wet.
