Best Surigao Tourist Spots and Activities

Cloud 9 in General Luna, Siargao

Siargao Island ranks at the top of the most popular tourist spots in Surigao. Known as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines , this teardrop-shaped island is famous for its epic waves, especially at Cloud 9 , a surfing spot ranked among the best in the world.

But beyond its surf, Siargao is also a paradise for non-surfers. Local and foreign tourists love its laid-back charm, including its emerald lagoons, coconut palm-fringed landscapes, and white-sand beaches.

Exploring the island, visitors will find a plethora of activities to do — from island hopping to the pristine islands of Daku, Guyam, and Naked Island ; taking a refreshing swim at Magpupungko Rock Pools ; paddling through the serene waters of the Sugba Lagoon ; swimming with stingless jellyfish in Sohoton Cove ; or simply basking in the laid-back island vibe.

Have we mentioned that it also offers beautiful, rustic-designed villas and rooms and amazing restaurants?

We’d been to Siargao Island twice and it’s a place we won’t get tired of visiting!

Swim underwater to get inside Hagukan Cave , see the stalactites at the Crystal Cave , and most promising of all — swim with stingless jellyfishes at the Jellyfish Sanctuary !

We promise that exploring the beauty of Sohoton Cove will blow you away!

Britania Islands - one of the best beach destinations in Mindanao

Britania Group of Islands is one of the locals’ favorite tourist spots in Surigao del Sur.

Scattered across the iridescent waters of Lianga Bay, this cluster of around 25 islands and islets offers a tropical paradise setting like no other. Some of the islands feature white-sand beaches, and all of them are surrounded by crystal-clear waters.

Hagonoy Island is known for its expansive stretch of white sand, while Naked Island , as its name suggests, is stripped of any vegetation and is simply a strip of blindingly white sand. The largest island, Boslon Island , is the perfect place for a breezy lunch during your island hopping tour.

Whether you’re a certified island hopping enthusiast or a casual tourist looking for a destination for the whole family, Britania Group of Islands should be on your list of next destination in Surigao.

Nestled in the town of Cortes in Surigao del Sur, Laswitan Lagoon is a unique tourist spot known for a grand spectacle — gigantic waves crashing against the rocks, spilling over into a natural pool and creating a mesmerizing waterfall effect. “Laswit” is the local term for splash.

Once you’ve satiated yourself with the view, take a dip into one of three natural lagoons in the area. There are also cottages where you can rest and enjoy a picnic.

Laswitan Lagoon is best visited during the monsoon season, from November to February. You need to climb down about 300 steps to get to the lagoon, so it’s best visited by those who are physically fit. Make sure to wear proper footwear and be cautious of slipper rocks.

Surigao is known all over the world for the surf breaks in Siargao, but did you know that there are other surfing spots in this area?

Lanuza is coastal town located at Surigao del Sur — a surfer’s paradise known for its consistent swell and perfect barreling waves, perfect for both novice and seasoned surfers. Many consider this to be a lesser-crowded, cheaper alternative to Siargao.

The town boasts over 10 surf breaks, and each one with different characteristics. Moreover, it is also home to cheap restaurants and accommodation, so you can enjoy the outdoors without breaking the bank.

Aside from surfing, the town is also a good base for exploring the rest of Surigao del Sur tourist spots, including the nearby Laswitan Lagoon, Britania Group of Islands, Cagwait Beach, and more.

Green Falls - one of the best Surigao del Sur tourist spots

One of the lesser-known Surigao tourist spots, this family-owned resort offers a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. The main highlight of this resort is the Green Falls, a large 7-tiered waterfall with lush surroundings. The main stream is called Cagpangi Falls, which has its own plunge pool which continuously flows down into the resort entrance.

Take a day off to swim in its cool water and follow the trail to see the rest of the streams. Cottages are also available so you can rest, eat, and bond with your family while enjoying the surrounding nature.

For a relaxing, family-friendly experience, visit Green Falls Leisure Farm and Resort the next time you’re in Surigao del Sur.

Looking for a fun outdoor activity while staying in Surigao City? Silop Multi-Caves is a network of six caves, two of which are open for tourists. This activity is beginner-friendly and a great way to kick off your tour in Surigao.

The caves feature stalactites, stalagmites, and other fascinating rock formations shaped by nature’s hands over millennia. If you’re quiet and attentive, you might also spot bats and swiftlets making their homes in the cave ceilings.

Touring the caves takes less than an hour. Remember to bring your sense of adventure and a sturdy pair of shoes before heading in!

Cabgan Island, Barobo

Cabgan Island is another hidden gem in Surigao del Sur. It is one of the islands that you can visit on a boat tour at the quiet town of Barobo .

We’d visited Cabgan Island several years ago and during that time it was still an untouched island, filled with white-sand shores and a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean that locals call the West Life. Currently, there is now an island resort at the island, offering basic facilities such as cottages and toilets. However, you still need to bring your own food and other beach essentials.

The beach at Cabgan Island is perhaps one of the most beautiful in the Philippines, and for this alone it’s worth adding it to your itinerary in Surigao del Sur.

You’ll be surprised by how many beautiful beaches in Mindanao can be found in Surigao.

Ayoke Island is a secluded island fringed with white-sand beaches, rock formations, and a natural sea wall that protects the shores from strong waves. It’s a great destination for those who like off-the-beaten spots.

There is a lone resort in the island where you can stay overnight. You can also visit here on a day tour to enjoy the pristine beaches and snorkel — the island is actually a marine protected area, so it’s a great place for snorkeling and freediving! For other fun activities, head to the eastern part of the island and go surfing — bring your own surfboard or watch the kids make their own from the bread fruit tree.

Ayoke Island is part of Cantillan Islands , which are composed of Ayoke Island, Huyamao Island, Inijakan Island or Bill’s Sanctuary, and Isla Encantada.

Whether you’re a certified backpacker or a leisure tourist who loves visiting beaches, Ayoke Island should be on your list of must-visit Surigao tourist spots.

Lake Mainit is another one of the must-see tourist spots in Surigao. Although unheard by many outside tourists, this impressive freshwater lake is considered the fourth largest lake in the Philippines, as well as the deepest lake with a depth of up to 223 meters. It lies in the border of Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte.

Known for its astonishing biodiversity, Lake Mainit is an ecotourism paradise, teeming with various species of fish and surrounded by lush forests that are home to an array of wildlife.

Currently, there are no hotels or resorts around the lake, but you can visit here on a day tour to appreciate the view and enjoy various lake activities such as fishing, boating, and bird-watching.

Lumondo Falls is an up-and-coming tourist attraction in the town of Alegria, Surigao del Norte. The waterfall features a 20 meter drop, surrounded by large boulders and lush greenery. It has a small basin and a viewing deck where tourists can take pictures.

Once neglected, the trail to the waterfall has seen improvements in recent times. In 2023, the Lumondo Hanging Bridge was officially opened to the public, which allowed visitors to cross a 180-meter hanging bridge while enjoying the view of surrounding mountain forest before heading to the waterfall. The hanging bridge has become an attraction in itself, due to its challenging glass-bottomed floor area and IG-worthy scenery.

Bao-Bao Falls may not be as grand as other waterfalls in the Philippines, but it’s still a great place to visit for a summer break.

The waterfall features small cascades of water flowing down into a large, deep pool filled with cool, refreshing water. On good days, the water is a perfect shade of jade, adding to its natural beauty. There are cottages near the waterfall where families and other tourists can rest while not in the water.

This Surigao tourist spot is easy to reach. It’s about an hour’s drive from Surigao City and from the jump-off point you only need to climb down a set of stairs to reach the waterfall area.

Location : Lianga, Surigao del Sur

We know that Filipinos love white-sand beaches, but if you ask us, every type of beach has its own charm. We’d been here before and our advice is to appreciate it as it is!

Unlike most beaches in the Philippines, Mabua Pebble Beach is known for its expanse of smooth round pebbles. This beach is perfect for a family outing. There are beachside cottages you can rest for bonding and picnic and the shore is perfect for a peaceful stroll and swimming. You might also be lucky to observe local fishermen hauling their fresh catch for the day!

The island is mostly covered with lush vegetation and is home to a bat cave, hence its nickname “ Bat Island .” It also has a small strip of white-sand beach perfect for swimming and beach bumming!

Cagpangi Falls/Green Falls

tourist spot in lianga surigao del sur

Just about 16 kilometers [or 20 minutes on average speed] from Tago, Cagpangi Falls is small and quiet. As it flows, it mesmerizes with its delicate beauty and watery grace. Comparing it to another of Surigao del Sur’s iconic falls using a musical metaphor, one may say that Tinuy-an Falls is hard rock while Cagpangi Falls is rhythm and blues.

Like all other falls, Cagpangi is seasonal: at times it gushes like a broken dam, other times it trickles like sweat. And its height is not impressive; but this becomes an advantage as Cagpangi Falls is not obscured by mists even when flowing at full volume. The better for the inner camwhores in tourists.

Canopied by a thick foliage that blows a cold mountain air, Cagpangi Falls is a natural cocoon for homo sapiens with weary heart and soul. But above all, it’s a place to celebrate nature and life because of its awe-inspiring power no matter how subdued.  Read More:  http://kspy65.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-watery-grace-of-cagpangi-falls-in.html

Enchanted River

tourist spot in lianga surigao del sur

Enchanted River is as mysterious as its name itself.  Like the Wakulla Springs in Tallahassee, Florida (which I had visited a couple of years ago), no one knows where the water comes from.  Is it a spring? Did parts of the water come from the sea? Six hundred meters away is the coastline of Hinatuan Bay, which faces the Pacific Ocean.

The river looks like a photograph that has been photoshopped; it reminds you of the movie Blue Lagoon .  The waters are so crystal clear that you can see even the deepest part.  If you don’t know much about swimming, try to swim in the area where there the shade of color is from blue to green; once it is darker blue, it means it is deep already. The Enchanted River at Surigao Del Sur is crystal clear, perfect for swimming.

But what is baffling is that the waters look so shallow but no one really knows how deep the river is.  There were some stories circulated that a foreigner tried to plunge into the visible riverbed and finds it unfathomable.  Read More: https://www.gaiadiscovery.com/latest-places/surigao-del-surs-enchanted-river-waterfalls

Laswitan Falls and Lagoon

tourist spot in lianga surigao del sur

The Laswitan Falls and Lagoon is actually a unique 20-foot rock formation located near the shore in Cortes. This geological feature creates three natural basins so that when the surf becomes high, the huge waves would flow and spill into the main basin on the other side, thus creating a waterfall effect.

The lagoon below the rock formation is so huge in that it can fit up to 200 people – maybe even more! Tourists visiting the place can dip in these pools and get themselves splashed by the sea water coming from the other side. The lagoon has a deep part which swimmers can enjoy but there is also a shallow area that other people can dip in.  Read More:  https://wayph.com/travel-guide-laswitan-in-cortes-surigao-del-sur/

It is popularly known as “Silop” by the locals. It is also ideal in holding events because aside from the cottages in the resort, it also has a function room which caters special events. The management also allows overnight stays and accommodations.

There is a big pool and spa in the resort. The water from the pool is very cold and clear coming from the natural spring. The place is very serene and surrounded by green vegetation. It’s very relaxing and comforting.

The very cool spring is surrounded by well-arranged big flat white rocks. The pool contains mineral water as it is welling from beneath the earth. Beneath the rock mountain is said to be a huge cave but because of the established swimming pool in the area, it is now hard to get in the cave.  Read More:  https://www.vigattintourism.com/tourism/articles/Malinawa-Cool-Spring-Natural-and-Mineral

It is better known as the Bat island as it is the home of big black wild bats. It has a small strip of white sand beach on one side.Hire an expert(usually a local fisherman who also owns the pump boat). This place is treacherous, accessible only during low tide and one has to be out of the island before the onset of high tide as the waters just rush in so fast during high tide.  Read More:  https://www.destimap.com/index.php?act=attraction&a=Mangkagangi-Island%2C-Tandag%2C-Philippines

Magkawas Falls

tourist spot in lianga surigao del sur

Magkawas Falls is one of many local gems in Lanuza tucked a kilometer into the forest from the main highway. The falls is about 40 feet high with a plunge pool that goes deeper than 7 feet – I didn’t reach the bottom and I didn’t bring my dive mask. Surounding the plunge pool is a constructed rip-raf that somehow dams the water to create that depth. The water then cascades over the rip-raf and into the stream. The water is both cold and refreshing!

The Lanuza Marine Sanctuary is just across the highway from the Magkawas Falls junction. It’s best to see both in one go. Snorkel and swim at the Sanctuary and then rinse it off at Magkawas Falls! Many thanks to the Lanuza Tourism Office for arranging this for me.  Read More:  http://www.thelonerider.com/2013/may/magkawas_falls/magkawas_falls.shtml

Silop Caves Complex is a relatively new tourist attraction of Surigao. Tourism was started in 2008 and is not very much frequented by tourists specially from Luzon. It is located 10 kilometers from the city center, about 15 min travel by habal habal.

These 6 limestone caves are still growing, meaning, they continue to change and reform each day. Do not be alarmed if you see spiders, snakes, birds, insects, and bats. Abundance of animals indicate that the cave is healthy.

Going through the 2 caves lasts for less that half an hour including picture time.

Upon exiting the 3rd cave, we had another 10 min trek back to the entrance.  Read More:  https://ashnsand.wordpress.com/2014/12/04/silop-caves/

I can honestly stay here for a long time if I feel like escaping the hustle and bustle in the city. The water was actually clearer before the typhoon hit Southern Philippines. Good thing that when I went there there weren’t much people utilizing the spring that’s why the water still seemed clear. There’s also a mini cliff there where you can jump for fun. If you are thinking where to put your things, there are actually cottages and tables in the area.

The place is just so enchanting. It’s best if it happens when you visit the place it would be only all to yourselves. It will surely be as magical as living in fairy tale world. Listening while the birds chirp, the trees swing and feeling the cold breeze that the spring gives in is something that truly gives you a sense of satisfaction. I wasn’t able to take a lot of photos for I enjoyed it a lot for me to forget to do the job but hopefully I have brought you to one wonderful experience and made this more informative.  Read More:  https://steemit.com/travel/@itinerantph/a-refreshing-dip-at-songkoy-cold-spring-or-tubod-surigao-del-norte-philippines-or-the-frugal-traveler-s-guide
