Step Inside Lil Baby’s Epic Atlanta Oasis

“Not only does it feel like home, it feels like a great accomplishment for me.” Coming from the rapper Lil Baby, it’s a sentiment that speaks volumes. One of the hip-hop world’s best selling artists, the 29-year-old Grammy winner has plenty of career highlights to his name, from albums with quadruple-platinum status (his sophomore effort, My Turn , was among 2020’s top-selling albums of the year) to major awards. “Even beyond all of that, this home is one of the things where I can see how far I came,” he says, marveling at his new Atlanta -area bachelor pad. “It took a lot to get here.”

Equal parts warm and spacious, stylish yet playful, the abode was the result of a collaborative effort between Lil Baby and the Georgia-based AD PRO Directory designer Annysa LaMantia . “We talked a lot about how the home will be used, and he wanted it to be all about entertainment and hosting,” says LaMantia. A former apprentice to the furniture designer Maurizio Manzoni, LaMantia, who started her namesake firm in 2017, regularly includes her own custom pieces in interior design projects.

“Lil Baby wanted a place to have a hibachi grill for his chef,” says LaMantia of the grill and outdoor sink, which were installed during the renovation. “He loves to entertain in that space. The outdoor kitchen also features NanaWall windows, which provide a pass-through so guests can interact in between spaces.”

“Atlanta has a tremendous amount of industry, from music and film to sports,” says LaMantia of the city and its influence on her work. The designer previously collaborated with music personalities like Khalid and Bobby Valentino, as well as the Atlanta Hawks star Lou Williams. She has developed a knack for balancing the influences and inspirations of highly creative people with her own distinct process. “Right when we first met, I took him to showrooms around the city to get his opinions and see what he’d respond to,” says LaMantia of her temperature-taking of Baby’s tastes. “From there, I designed 3D renderings around the direction of what could be great for him.”

“I really just let Annysa and the contractors do what they wanted to do,” the rapper admits, referring to Regents Custom Builders , who helped refresh the home space. “They did an incredible job on the subsequent renovation,” says Lamantia of the firm. “They really transformed the home.” Adds Lil Baby, “they all came up with the concept for sure, and then I came in toward the end and gave my finishing touches.”

The result is a dynamic space where guests are encouraged to kick back and relax. “The whole idea is that there are zones for all types of entertaining, from a movie theater where he makes music to a dining room, pool table, and a pool,” says LaMantia, who created a number of custom pieces for the project, including a dining table and couch. “The goal was for guests to think that it’s breathtaking,” Baby says. “That’s really what I wanted from every aspect and around every corner.” And yes, that also includes his 15-foot-wide bed. Another priority for the rapper was the kitchen, a frequent gathering place for family and friends. “One of the main things for me were these two islands,” he explains, alluding to the room’s custom pieces. “That particular space was very important.”

After years of work, the home now buzzes with the activity the rapper always dreamed of. “It’s really amazing,” he says of the project, admitting it was a complicated process. “I don’t want to say it was stressful, but it took a lot of work.” As it turns out, serious effort followed by major pay-offs is a concept the rapper is quite familiar with.

Statement pieces abound in this sitting area, including an Infinito by Natuzzi sofa, the Arena Bond coffee table for Cattelan Italia from Yasuhiro Shito, and a rug from Calle Henzel. “The basic idea was to create various zones in the house all designed for different types of entertaining,” says LaMantia. “This particular space is all about kicking back and enjoying one another’s company.”

The centerpiece of the living room is a custom fireplace surround. “I wanted to create a dynamic look that would lower the eye in the room, so you could be enchanted by all the furniture which also sits at eye level,” LaMantia explains. That includes the On The Rocks sofa by Edra , a favorite of the rapper.

Another prime spot for entertaining, the movie room includes an array of comfortable seating. “For this space, we created a variety of custom movie posters,” says LaMantia. The selection includesone from Untrapped , the documentary of the rapper’s own triumphant biography. “Whether I’m having a party night or my mom is here, a lot of times [watching] a movie is how we relax,” says Baby.

A pool table provides playful energy. “We love what it brought to the space,” says LaMantia. The Unfold floor lamp by Roche Bobois in the corner is both stylish and fun. To the left, an accordion door opens up to the pool area. “That was a touch from Regents Custom Builders,” explains LaMantia. “They did a sensational job on the project.”

Two pieces designed by LaMantia are stars of the dining area, including a table made in Italy, outfitted with an gray-gold-marble top and Bardiglio Imperiale marble legs with an oro-metal base. “That was one of the last pieces we added to the house,” says Baby. Custom lighting echoing the primary bedroom’s fixture hangs overhead.

A focal point for the house and the rapper’s “most important” room, the kitchen is entirely new. “The idea was to open up the space to create an open-air concept and fill it with people,” says LaMantia. Two highlights of the space include a large white glass bowl from Habachy Designs , as well as a painting, Olokun’s Baptism , by the artist Horace Imhotep , a favorite of Baby, who hired art advisors Onaje Henderson and Massoud Besharat for the project. “I’m into art, but not just any art,” he says. “It’s got to resonate with me.”

As part of the property’s extensive renovation, a pool was installed with the rapper’s two kids in mind. For the outdoor areas, LaMantia collaborated with the Baby’s estate manager, Kristen Lawson, on the exteriors. “We wanted to create outdoor spaces that were very clean,” LaMantia explains. “In modern homes in Atlanta, you’ll see this turfing—we ran it up the edge of the pool.” Adds Baby, “With a house like this, we had to have a pool.”

“My dream was always to be rich and take care of the family,” says Baby. “It was my goal since I was a kid.” The foyer houses Lisbon artist Gonzalez Bravo’s painting Gadix .

While the zone underneath this staircase could have been empty, LaMantia took the rapper’s edict to wow guests with dynamic spaces. “I love the aesthetic of this area,” says Baby, nodding to the Artemis bookcase from Made Goods and a La Mamma UP chair courtesy B&B Italia . “He actually purchased a miniature version of the same chair for his boys,” says LaMantia.

“I always wanted [a large bed] like that, so I wanted my bedroom to be superb,” says Baby of the primary bedroom and its 15-foot-wide bed. Adds LaMantia, “As a backdrop to the space, we used metal chain links and backlit it.” As for the lighting fixture above, she says, “we wanted to create some dimension and have a fantasy element. When it comes to its size, it’s unusual to have one at this scale but the idea was to create a wow factor in the room, especially with the large bed down below.”

Another custom design, the shoe showcase, which arose from the rapper’s passion for footwear, doesn’t even display his entire collection. “He definitely has this love of footwear and clothing, which we wanted to showcase,” explains LaMantia, who worked with closet curator Scott Johnson of Your Move Simplified . “The goal was to make sure we illuminated this area to make it a special feature and give it the vibe of an elevated showroom.”

In the primary bathroom lies a custom bathtub made up of more marble: two whole tons of it. A custom fireplace was also installed at Baby’s request. “It was a very technical process, but is definitely a highlight of the room,” says LaMantia. For Baby, it all came down to comfort. “When I wake up in the morning, I’m usually super cold no matter what season it is. I used to just sit with a blow dryer when I wake up in the morning, so I said, ‘I need a fireplace.’”

Another echo of a swank-resort aesthetic is the expansive primary bathroom.“The whole room is definitely a vibe,” Baby says. The fluted-marble floating vanity was designed by LaMantia and is made of solid marble, complete with a seamlessly integrated sink.

The rap superstar Lil Baby basks in the glow of his Atlanta-area home. Stemming from his inspirations, the project was the result of a collaborative effort between the Georgia-based AD PRO Directory designer Annysa LaMantia and the local firm Regents Custom Builders . “I get inspiration from when I’m on the road and visiting all of these hotels and resorts,” Baby explains. “When I go out of town and I’m touring places, I say to myself, ‘I want my property to be like this.’” It’s an inspiration that helps explain the cushy outdoor furniture. “When I come home, I want the same feeling as when I’m on vacation, but even better.”

Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour is a hopeful, tear-jerking delight

This, for me, is the antidote to those appalling race riots. If only all those involved could be made to watch it.

Eli is 18. He has a face like an angel, a body like a long streak of piss, and a history of bad behaviour. But when he stands at the crease, he looks so right there, this lad from Blackpool. Thwack. It’s the final over. His team, a motley crew if ever there was one, needs three off the last ball to win. Can he do it? Eyes swivel, as one, to the boundary. Yes, he can. A six!

On the minibus home after the match, he and the rest of the gang sing “Sweet Caroline” with such tuneless enthusiasm it fairly breaks the heart. Briefly, they are as buoyant as barrage balloons. Nothing can dent their happiness, not even the prospect of curry for tea.

You might remember these boys, though Eli is a new recruit. Two years ago, they were the stars of a series in which Andrew Flintoff, the former England international all-rounder who comes from Preston just as they all do (Eli excepted), took them by the scruffs of their necks, and tried to teach them cricket, self-respect, discipline and a dozen other qualities besides. Many of them had painful back stories: Adnan was only 15 when he arrived in Britain from Afghanistan in the back of a lorry; Ben had been homeless; Sean was a school refusenik who liked to fight and drink vodka. It was all incredibly moving and vital in ways I struggled to describe, and I loved it. Flintoff is the PE teacher every school needs, but only rarely finds.

The plan for the next series was to take the lads on tour to India, the better to open their eyes to the world (“Benidorm!” shouts one, on being told plane tickets will be involved). Only then, disaster. In December 2022, Flintoff had an accident while filming Top Gear , one so serious he was lucky to survive (the show didn’t).

A tiny bit of Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour was filmed before this crash, but the large majority of it was shot afterwards. Watch it, and you’ll see that the mere fact it went ahead at all is remarkable. Flintoff’s recovery was long and complex; for a long time, he barely left his house. But it also gives this series real depth: if he is still there to support his makeshift team, now he needs them to do the same for him.

The Saturday Read

Morning call.

The series is in four parts. I’ve seen two, just about – my constant blubbing having got in the way somewhat. This, for me, is the antidote to those appalling race riots, and if only all those involved could be made to watch it. Adnan has secured asylum at last. He has also won a sports scholarship to a smart school. His English isn’t just better; it’s like poetry, at moments. On tour, he’s the only Muslim boy, and while the team is in India, it’s Ramadan and he’s fasting. Seeing how lonely this is for him, Flintoff suggests they all fast for the day, a proposition no one resists.

In the evening, as the sun comes down, Adnan takes two teammates, Dylan and Hemi, with him to the mosque where they break their fast with delicious samosas, two pasty English lads among hundreds of smiling Indian men. If this sounds cheesy, well, again, just watch it. What sets this show apart is its naturalness, the feeling that the boys, half cocksure and half agonisingly vulnerable, barely grasp the cameras are there. What will they do next? Like Flintoff, we never quite know.

It’s good to see the team play gully (backstreet) cricket in Kolkata, where they’re based. Clichéd as it is to talk about the language of sport, here it is an instant lingua franca. But oh, the British abroad! None of them have travelled; passports were secured for filming and placed in the safe hands of Flintoff’s right-hand man, the former Lancashire cricketer, Kyle Hogg.

The boys’ daring goes hand in hand with a squeamish and distinctly pathetic timidity. Sean has a fit at the sight of a fried pomfret. Ben admits to having swallowed not a thing since the Pringles he scoffed on the flight. They want KFC, not mutton curry and coconut dhal. Flintoff, who’ll eat anything, is stern. “Just try it,” he’ll say, as if to a toddler. His expression is caught throughout between amazement and gratitude. Second chances. Anyone who is lucky enough to get one should grab it with both (turmeric-stained) hands.
