M5 traffic live: 'Severe delays' as lanes reopen after crash and Storm Ciarán travel chaos

A lane was closed on the M5 following a two-vehicle crash in Somerset today, Thursday 2 November.

The crash took place between junction 22 for Burnham-on-Sea and junction 23 for Bridgwater. It was first reported shortly after 10am and congestion developed in the area.

Inrix says: "One lane closed and queueing traffic due to accident, two vehicles involved on M5 Southbound from J22 (Burnham-on-Sea) to J23 A39 (Bridgwater North).

12.50pm update - Lanes reopen

Inrix reports: "Severe delays due to earlier accident on M5 Southbound from J22 (Burnham-on-sea) to J23 A39 (Bridgwater North). Congestion to Sedgemoor Services. All lanes have been re-opened. Lane one (of three) was closed as recovery completed."

12.15pm update - "Severe delays"

Inrix reports: "Severe delays and one lane closed due to recovery work and accident, a car and an overturned caravan involved on M5 Southbound from J22 (Burnham-on-sea) to J23 A39 (Bridgwater North).

"Traffic was held around 11:50 for ten minutes to upright the caravan, lanes one and two remain closed for ongoing recovery. Source:CCTV image, Highways, INRIX Speed Sensors."

The motorway between Gloucester/Cheltenham and Tewkesbury was closed for most of the day after one of the lorries crossed over the central reservation

The M5 in Gloucestershire has reopened after serious crash in the early hours of today (Tuesday, February 6). Two lorries were involved in the collision at around 2.30am, after one crossed from the southbound carriageway to the other side, overturning and spilling fuel between junctions 10 and 11.

The motorway was closed both ways between junction 9 for Tewkesbury and 11 for Gloucester/Cheltenham during the morning rush-hour. It was closed northbound between those two junctions until 4pm and is now fully reopen.

Extensive damage had been done to the central reservation and the road surface, National Highways said. Barrier repairs took place through the day.

Gloucestershire Police were also at the scene. A spokesperson for the police force said the occupants in both lorries were taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be serious.

Traffic easing, emergency carriageway repairs complete on M5 Northbound between J11 A40 (Gloucester / Golden Valley Bypass) and J9 A46 (Tewkesbury). Cameras shows entry slips and the road has reopened now around 16:05.

There is now another closure

M5 Southbound lane closed on exit slip road due to broken down van at J11A A417 (Gloucester / Cirencester ). Traffic is coping well.

M5 Northbound closed, queueing traffic due to emergency carriageway repairs between J11 A40 (Gloucester / Golden Valley Bypass) and J9 A46 (Tewkesbury). Congestion to traffic is heading away along the A38 through Coombe Hill towards Tewkesbury. The entry slips have also been closed whilst resurfacing works take place near J10 (Cheltenham) where the works are being done.

Diversion: Via the A40 through Gloucester to Over Roundabout, then the A417 Ledbury Road to the M50 J2 and follow the M50 J2 to re-join the M5 at J8 (Strensham Interchange).

Latest full update from National Highways

The M5 in Gloucestershire is closed northbound between J11 (Gloucester) and J9 (Tewkesbury) due to a collision involving 2 heavy goods vehicles (HGV).

One of the HGV's has crossed over from the southbound carriageway onto the northbound and has subsequently overturned. As a result, the HGV's fuel tank has ruptured and has spilled out onto the carriageway.

Barrier repairs are taking place.

Resurfacing of the northbound carriageway is required. It is anticipated that the northbound closure will remain in place until late this afternoon.

All lanes are now open southbound.

M5 crash in Devon now

All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to multi-vehicle accident on M5 Southbound at J30 A376 Sidmouth Road (Exeter / Service Areas). Traffic held around 12:30, camera shows there are four cars on the hard shoulder and a lorry in lane one (of three).

Resurfacing work is also required.

Cameras show lanes one and two (of three) on the southbound carriageway have now reopened, with lane three remaining closed. The northbound carriageway also remains closed whilst the barrier is repaired and the road is resurfaced.

Slow traffic on A40 at Arle Court Roundabout. Travel time is ten minutes.

A417 - BIRDLIP - NORTHBOUND

Queueing traffic on A417 Northbound from Birdlip down hill to A436 Air Balloon Roundabout. Travel time is 25 minutes.

A46 - ASHCHURCH

Diversion routes

There are long delays and huge queues.

The M5 in Gloucestershire is closed in both directions between J11 (Gloucester) and J9 (Tewkesbury) due to a collision involving 2 heavy goods vehicles (HGV).

Emergency services including Gloucestershire Police are in attendance. National Highways have deployed resources to assist with traffic management.

The closure is likely to remain ongoing throughout most of the day as there is significant damage to the central reservation barrier and the road surface.

Delays of 60 minutes above normal are reported southbound, with just over 7 miles of congestion on the approach to J9.

Delays of approximately 15 minutes above normal are reported northbound.

Diversion Routes

Road users travelling northbound are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on road signs.

• Exit the M5 northbound at J11 and take the 1st exit onto the A40 heading west.
• Follow the A40 to the roundabout with the A417 at Gloucester and take the 3rd exit onto the A417 heading north.
• Continue on the A417 up the M50 J2 and turn right at the junction to join the M50 eastbound.
• Follow the M50 eastbound back to the M5 J8 and re-join the M5 to continue your journey.

Road users travelling southbound are advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs

• Exit the M5 southbound at J9 and take the third exit onto the A438.
• From the A438, take the A38 southbound.
• Continue southbound on the A38, travelling the full stretch of the A38 to the A40.
• At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A40 eastbound.
• Continue on the A40 to the M5 to re-join and continue your journey at J11.

Recovery underway to remove lorry

National Highways said: "National Highways is working hard with the emergency services and its contractors to reopen the M5 as soon as it is safe to do so.

"Recovery has arrived on site and once the lorry has been recovered, it is hoped that two lanes on the southbound can be reopened. National Highways inspectors will then be able to fully assess the road surface to determine whether resurfacing is required before the northbound can be safely reopened.

"Fully signed diversion routes are in place for northbound traffic following the solid triangle symbol via the A40, A417 and M50 and for southbound traffic following the solid circle symbol via the A438, A38 and A40."

Not sure what happened but the traffic is mad

Roadworks have just started on the roundabout at junction 9 M5 which has caused chaos to the surrounding roads leading to/from the roundabout. It normally takes me 3/4 minutes to get onto the M5, last night (5.30pm) it took an hour!!

is the m5 southbound between j21 and j22 closed at night? We live along the A370 and lorries have been thundering past from about 2200 onwards.

Constant traffic jams from j2 Oldbury towards j1. I believe the cause is the 60 speed limit imposed on the slim premise of air quality. These jams cause more Co2 than if the limit was at 70

M5 reopens after lorry fire on Avonmouth Bridge

A section of the M5 on the outskirts of Bristol following a lorry fire.

The vehicle caught fire on the Avonmouth Bridge between J19 for Portishead and J18 for the M49.

Northbound traffic was first held at around 15:10 BST, with southbound traffic then held at 15:25 BST.

Traffic cameras showed a number of fire engines had responded to the incident.

National Highways confirmed emergency services were at the scene.

One lane of the M5 northbound had reopened at around 17:00 BST, followed by all lanes reopening around two hours later.

M5 Roadworks

The M5 motorway in the UK is a motorway running from junction 8 of the M4 motorway near Maidenhead, Berkshire to Exeter in Devon and is approximately 200km (125 miles) long. It opened in sections between 1960 and 1975 and is part of the Intra-Urban Motorway Network.

The M5 motorway is considered to be a relatively safe motorway. According to the Department for Transport statistics, the M5 had the second-lowest rate in England of fatal and serious collisions between 201315. An Alliance of South West Road Safety Groups revealed an overall reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries on the M5 between 201115.

Overall, the M5 has an average road safety rating in line with the majority of other UK motorways, with a lower overall rate of death and serious injury than average.

But with thousands of extra motorists on the roads, there's inevitably a lot more traffic than usual, as well as ongoing construction works on some of the region's roads causing long tailbacks.

One hour travel time from Tiverton to Clevedon on M5

There are long delays and stop-start traffic due to holiday traffic on M5 Northbound between J27 A361 ( Tiverton ) and J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way ( Clevedon ). Travel time is 60 minutes.

Major delays in north Plymouth

There are major delays around the north of Plymouth following a collision on the A386 Tavistock Road near Derriford Hospital.

Approaching the Tamar Bridge there’s queuing traffic in both directions due to resurfacing work. Devonbound traffic is queuing from the Carkeel Roundabout, says BBC Travel South West.

There are reports of a collision partly blocking Armada Way in Plymouth city centre. The extent of the incident is not yet known, updates to follow when more information is available.

BBC Travel South West says there are reports of fallen power cables on the A396 between Station Road and Blundells Road in Tiverton. Approach with care

Road closed due to collapse at Kingswear

Devon County Council is reporting the closure of Hoodown Lane, Kingswear, Dartmouth, due to a collapse.

The road is a dead end and there is now access only for residents. Updates to follow.

The latest updates on the traffic heading north on the M5 is long delays and stop-start traffic due to holiday traffic between J27 A361 ( Tiverton ) and J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way ( Clevedon ). Travel time is 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Heavy traffic leaving M5 southbound at Exeter

A traffic camera is showing heaving traffic exiting the M5 southbound at Junction 30 for Exeter and East Devon leading to the Sandygate Roundabout.

M5 in Devon: 90 minutes travel time

Long tailbacks have been reported on the M5 northbound.

Inrix says: "Long delays and stop-start traffic due to holiday traffic on M5 Northbound between J27 A361 (Tiverton) and J21 A370 (Weston-super-mare). Travel time is 1 hour and 30 minutes."

A30 in Devon: 45 minutes travel time

Motorists have been stuck in traffic for around 45 minutes on the A30 at Broadwoodwidger in Devon.

An update from Inrix says: "Very slow traffic due to holiday traffic on A30 Eastbound between A30 (Stowford Cross, Broadwoodwidger) and A382 (Whiddon Down, Whiddon Down). Travel time is around 45 minutes.

"Delays as traffic heads towards Exeter and the M5. Not helped by an earlier broken down vehicle near Okehampton."

A38 Tamar Bridge: Congestion to Carkeel Roundabout

Traffic has built near the Tamar Bridge and there is now congestion to the Carkeel Roundabout.

An update on Inrix explains: "Queueing traffic on A38 on Tamar Bridge. Congestion to Carkeel Roundabout heading eastbound, back to St Budeaux heading westbound. In the roadworks area.

"Lane restrictions are in place on the bridge for resurfacing works."

A386: queuing traffic at Horrabridge

Inrix says: "Queueing traffic on A386 near Old Station Road [Horrabridge]. In the roadworks area."

A392: Very slow traffic near Hendra Holiday Park

Inrix says: "Very slow traffic on A392 near Hendra Holiday Park. In the roadworks area."

A3075: Holiday traffic

Traffic is very slow due to holiday traffic on the A3075 Newquay Road, around the B3285 at Goonhavern, Cornwall.

A361: Very slow traffic from holiday traffic

Traffic is very slow on the A361 due to holiday traffic.

Inrix reports: "Very slow traffic due to holiday traffic on A361 Eastbound between Moortown Cross (Knowstone) and A396 Bolham Road (Bolham roundabout, Tiverton).

A30: Holiday traffic causing queues in both directions

Traffic is building on the A30 in both directions as thousands of holidaymakers flock to the west country.

Inrix says: "Queueing traffic due to holiday traffic on A30 in both directions between A39 (Carland Cross) and A390 (Chiverton Cross roundabout)."

Fore Street in Constantine, Cornwall is partially blocked

A3022 Newton Road partially blocked

The A3022 Newton Road at Torquay, Devon is partially blocked.

Inrix reports: "A3022 Newton Road partially blocked, slow traffic due to broken down vehicle near Old Woods Hill."

A30 in Devon: Very slow traffic, 40 minutes travel time

Very slow traffic has been reported on the A30 at Okehampton, Devon.

An update from Inrix says: "Very slow traffic due to earlier broken down car on A30 Eastbound between B3260 (Meldon Junction) and B3260 Exeter Road (Okehampton Services). Travel time is 40 minutes.

"All lanes have been re-opened. Lane one (of two) was closed."

Further traffic has been reported at West Hill, near B3174 (Daisy Mount Cross), in the roadwaorks area.

A39 Falmouth road: Stop-start traffic

Long delays and stop-start traffic have been reported on the A39 Falmouth Road in Penryn, Cornwall.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix says: "Long delays and stop-start traffic due to holiday traffic on A39 Falmouth Road Northbound between A393 (Treluswell Roundabout, Penryn) and A390 (Arch Hill, Truro). Travel time is around 30 minutes."

Traffic also queuing at A38, Haldon Hill

As well as the queues on the A38 in Bodmin, Cornwall, there are also tailbacks on the A38 at Haldon Hil, Devon.

Queueing traffic on A38 but the road has reopened

An update on traffic monitoring site Inrix reports: "A38 in both directions partially blocked, slow traffic due to broken down car and earlier accident, motorbike involved between A30 (Carminow Cross) and Bodmin Parkway.

"The road reopened shortly after 9am following the accident involving a motorcyclist, however there is now a breakdown within the queues. Affecting traffic between Bodmin and Liskeard."

A38 reopened

The A38 is now open following the incident earlier.

Highways England says: " The A38 is now OPEN following an incident between A390 Liskeard and the A30 near Bodmin."

M5 crash injuries "not currently known"

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that there was a two-car collision on the J29 slip road, but are unsure how bad any injuries may have been.

They said: "Two-vehicle collision on the Junction 29 southbound off-slip of the M5 in Exeter.

"The road is blocked and ambulance is on the scene.

"Extent of any injuries not currently known."

They will update with further information when they get it.

The J29 slip road reopened at 8:47am.

A38 diversions are busy

The A38 continues to be closed in both directions. Diversions are in place but they are already busy.

An update from Inrix says: "A38 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to serious accident, motorbike involved between A30 (Carminow Cross) and Bodmin Parkway.

"Closed around 07:50 so that an air ambulance could attend the scene. Affecting traffic between Bodmin and Liskeard.

"Diversion - via B3268, which is already busy, towards Liskeard and the A390 towards Dobwalls."

M5 now reopened

The M5 has now reopened. Lane two of two was closed but as of 8.47am, the lane is now open.

Inrix says: "M5 Southbound lane re-opened on exit slip road, traffic returned to normal, accident cleared at J29 A3015 Honiton Road (Exeter / Honiton).

"Lane two (of two) was closed."

Tamar Bridge offices closed

Tamar Crossings has confirmed its offices at the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry are closed today due to staffing issues.

Traffic on the Tamar Bridge continues to be "slow," reports Inrix, especailly in the roadworks area.

Traffic in Bodmin "very congested"

BBC Travel reports that traffic in the roads surrounding an incident on the A38 is "very congested".

A statement on social media says: "The A38 in the Glynn Valley is closed between Carminow Cross and Bodmin Parkway due to an accident.

"Diversions are in place but traffic is queueing.

"Respryn Road and surrounding roads are now very congested as drivers avoid the A38."

The M5 Southbound is partially closed after a collision.

Traffic and travel news site Inrix says: "M5 Southbound lane closed on exit slip road, heavy traffic due to accident at J29 A3015 Honiton Road (Exeter / Honiton).

"Lane two (of two) is closed."

M5 'air weapon' road rage investigated

A road rage incident that involved a "projectile" being fired at a car on the M5 is being investigated by police.

Devon and Cornwall Police said it believed the item was a "ball-bearing-type object fired from an air weapon".

The incident happened on the northbound carriageway of the motorway near Cullompton, between junctions 28 and 27, at about 10:10 BST on Wednesday 17 April, police said.

A man, aged in his 30s, from the Exeter area has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause another to fear unlawful violence. He has since been released on police bail while inquiries continue.

Police said the male victim’s car was approached at speed from behind by a silver Mercedes van which undertook the vehicle before cutting in front of it.

The force said it was reported the driver of the van "gesticulated and swore at the victim before later pulling up alongside him".

A projectile was then allegedly fired from the van at the victim’s car, causing damage, police added.

Officers want to speak to motorists who have dashcam footage of the incident.
