British royals to make 'much-anticipated' first visit to Australia with King Charles III as monarch

King Charles III arrives at Buckingham Palace in London

Members of the British royal family will visit Australia in 2024, New South Wales parliament has confirmed.

Key points:

  • The royal visit is part of a program of events in 2024 but the actual date has not yet been publicly confirmed
  • The NSW Legislative Council is the oldest judicial body in Australia
  • Queen Elizabeth II last visited Australia in 2011

State governor Margaret Beazley today announced the program of events celebrating the 200 th anniversary of the NSW Legislative Council.

Included in the events is a "much-anticipated" royal visit in 2024.

It appears to be the first official confirmation of rumours of an imminent Australian tour for the new monarch, King Charles III.

However, details of which members of the royal family will be included in the visit are yet to be released.

Queen Elizabeth II wearing a blue outfit and hat smiles toward the camera

Queen Elizabeth II’s last visit to Australia was in October 2011.

In 1954, the late queen opened the NSW parliament, marking the beginning of the sitting session for that year.

She called the state institution Australia’s "mother parliament".

The NSW Legislative Council is the oldest body of its kind in Australia.

In the schedule for the bicentenary event, the "anticipated royal tour” is listed for October 2024.

This coincides with a Commemorative Opening of the NSW Parliament in the same month.

Ms Beazley said the 200 th anniversary of the NSW legislative council would celebrate centuries of democracy in Australia.

“The establishment, in 1823, of the Legislative Council as the first legislative body in Australia was to have defining and profound impacts," she said.

"In celebrating the Bicentenary of the Legislative Council, we celebrate its role in our parliamentary democracy, as required by s5 of the NSW Constitution: ‘to make laws for the peace, welfare, and good government of New South Wales'.”

New NSW Governor Margaret Beazley

Other events in the bicentenary celebration schedule include Indigenous seminars and public speaking events, historical exhibitions and tours of parliament.

The first event will kick off this month with Unlocking the House,  an exhibition on Macquarie Street displaying the history of NSW’s upper house.

Charles And Camilla Are Planning To Visit Australia In 2024

nsw travel king charles

Australia might be welcoming the British royal family to our shores as reports of a royal tour emerge.

According to the Sydney Morning Heralds’ diplomatic source, King Charles and Queen Camilla are on the cusp of confirming an Australian tour for next year.

“ King Charles is planning to visit Australia and New Zealand in October,” the source told the publication.

Charles and Camilla Australian tour

An Australian visit has been on the cards since King Charles’ coronation in May, however no firm plans have been laid.

The latest reports seem to indicate the King and Queen are planning their tour for late next year, with the source explaining that the visit would likely coincide with Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa next year.

“It would be next October, it’s very possible it will happen. It would be around the time of CHOGM that he would come, either before or after, that would make sense,” the diplomatic source told the publication.

The week long event is held every two years and sees the 56 nations come together.

The date is also when Camilla’s son, Tom Parker Bowls recently told The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald that his mother and stepfather were planning an Australian visit.

“He’s coming next year, I think,” he said, adding that he “really didn’t know” any other information.

“There’s always a royal tour somewhere. I always assumed that Australia was a very important place to visit,” he said.

The eventual visit will be King Charles’ first as the King. He last visited in 2018 with Camilla.

When Will King Charles And Queen Camilla Visit Australia?

At this stage, reports indicate that King Charles and Camilla will visit in the Spring of 2024—however, nothing has been confirmed.

Where In Australia Will King Charles And Queen Camilla Visit?

The Australian tour locations have not be confirmed, however we expect the King and Queen will make their way around the country. On Queen Elizabeth II’s first royal tour of Australia in 1954, she visited every Australian state and territory.

The Weird, Mysterious History of Valentine’s Day

Quick peasants, grab a rake and start doing something, because the New South Wales parliament has just confirmed that His Majesty Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King of Australia and His other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth is on his way!

State governor Margaret Beazley has announced the programme of events to celebrate the NSW Legislative Council’s 200th anniversary, which will include a “much anticipated” royal visit.

This is set to be the first official visit of the new King to Australia, although details of who exactly will be joining him on this royal tour have yet to be revealed.

The very best of The Latch delivered straight to your inbox.

We’ve got a fair while to practice our ‘looking busy’ actions though, as the visit is not scheduled to happen until October 2024.

It’s set as part of the commemorations of the NSW Legislative Council, Australia’s oldest judicial body and the blueprint for all other state and federal bodies in this country.

The events also include Indigenous talks and public events, historical exhibitions, and tours of parliament. The first of these gets underway this month with an exhibition on Macquarie Street called ‘Unlocking the House’, a visual display of the history of NSW’s Upper House.

Beazley said that the events would celebrate centuries of democracy in Australia .

“The establishment, in 1823, of the Legislative Council as the first legislative body in Australia was to have defining and profound impacts,” Beazley said.

“In celebrating the Bicentenary of the Legislative Council, we celebrate its role in our parliamentary democracy, as required by s5 of the NSW Constitution: ‘to make laws for the peace, welfare, and good government of New South Wales’.”

The last time we had a monarch visit was back in 2011 when Queen Elizabeth II toured Australia for what would turn out to be her last time.

Charles last graced us with his presence in 2018 on a royal tour to open the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

King Charles and Queen Camilla's 2024 Australia royal tour revealed, and it's set to be a long one

By Maddison Leach | 5 months ago

King Charles is planning his first visit to Australia since becoming monarch , according to sources close to the royal family and Albanese government.

New comments appear to confirm longstanding rumours the King will head Down Under with wife Queen Camilla in October 2024.

The visit is slated to coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are on a seven-day tour of Australia, visiting Queensland and the Northern Territory.

"King Charles is planning to visit Australia and New Zealand in October," a diplomatic source told the Sydney Morning Herald anonymously.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese invited the King and other senior royals to visit Australia during a May audience with the monarch in London, ahead of his coronation.

A source in the Albanese government said that the visit is yet to be confirmed by Buckingham Palace.

"It would be next October, it's very possible it will happen," they said. "It would be around the time of CHOGM that he would come, either before or after, that would make sense."

Former palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter reiterated during an appearance on Today this morning that nothing has been confirmed yet. Watch the video above.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla smile and wave during the launch of the Coronation Food Project and the visit to the South Oxfordshire Food and Education Alliance, a surplus food distribution centre, on November 14, 2023 in Didcot, England.

"Quite frankly, we don't know anything at the moment. It's speculation. It's appearing in all the Australian newspapers," he said.

"I said during the coronation coverage last year this time, the most appropriate time for him to visit and the Queen would be around the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting meeting in Samoa, to make it one big trip."

Arbiter added that the trip would likely be a long one, as the King and Queen wouldn't travel so far just to spend a few days in Australia then fly home.

"The problem is you have to find a big window. The King has done, Germany, France, Kenya, flown in and out in three days. You can't do three days in Australia," he said.

The CHOGM is held once every two years and brings together leaders from 56 nations around the world. It's set to begin on October 21, 2024.

King Charles and Queen Camilla last visited Australia in 2018 for the opening of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Prior to that, they last visited in November 2015.

Terri Irwin, Bob Irwin and Bindi Irwin speak with Prince Charles, Prince of Wales before a roundtable meeting, discussing coral resilience on Lady Elliot Island on April 6, 2018 in Queensland, Australia.

But there has been speculation since 2022 that the King would plan a visit to Australia early in his reign as monarch.

Sources told The Mirror that the King was "keen to hit the ground running" in the first years of his reign.

"He certainly wants to carry on the long-held mantra from his late mother of being seen to be believed, and is very keen to get out and meet as many people as possible," they said.

In September 2023, British outlets reported that the King and Queen would likely visit Australia in October 2024 and last week the Queen's son, Tom Parker Bowles, seemed to confirm that.

King Charles planning Royal Family’s biggest-ever series of tours around the globe

The monarch will prioritise visits to Australia, New Zealand and a number of Commonwealth realms in the Caribbean in a two-year blitz of foreign travel aimed at “extending a hand of friendship and support”, royal sources have revealed

King Charles is planning the Royal Family’s biggest-ever series of tours around the globe to kick off his reign.

The monarch will prioritise visits to Australia, New Zealand and a number of Commonwealth realms in the Caribbean.

It will be a two-year blitz of foreign travel aimed at “extending a hand of friendship and support”, royal sources have revealed.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are also being lined up for a “major support role” as the royals begin a new era after Queen Elizabeth’s passing.

The King is also understood to be keen to undertake a number of solo trips, both at home and abroad. This will allow the Queen Consort to undertake more engagements for her personal projects.

A royal source said: “The King and his family are keen to hit the ground running in these crucial first few months and years of his reign.

“He certainly wants to carry on the long-held mantra from his late mother of being seen to be believed, and is very keen to get out and meet as many people as possible.”

Sources have said the royals could undertake as many trips as the Queen packed in during the 1970s, with her 52 Commonwealth visits and 21 trips to other countries to mark her 25th jubilee.

The King has already opened discussions with his chief advisers over visits to major British realms including Australia and Canada “as soon as possible”. He has also raised the importance of visiting the 14 other nations where he is king.

Government officials in New South Wales this week revealed plans for a “much-anticipated” royal tour in 2024 to coincide with the 200th anniversary of democracy in Australia, although sources suggest Prince William and Kate had also previously discussed plans for a tour Down Under in spring 2023.

A postponed trip to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh for Charles and Camilla is also being rescheduled, with options to send William and Kate at the top of the agenda.

The Foreign Office is also keen to use the diplomatic power of the monarchy to build bridges with neighbours such as France and Germany following Brexit .

Plans for Charles and Camilla to visit France next month are understood to have been postponed but will now be rescheduled for next year. William and Kate will travel to the United States next month for the second instalment of William’s Earthshot Prize environmental project.

Charles, 73, has so far visited 45 of 56 Commonwealth countries, many of them on several occasions.

Royal sources have revealed he is “acutely aware” that his accession to the throne comes at a time of particular unrest across a number of realms, especially in the Caribbean, as they assess whether to become republics.

Charles is also likely to be asked to travel to South Africa on the back of preparations being made to hold his first state visit of his reign next month.

He and Camilla will host President Cyril Ramaphosa and his wife, First Lady Tshepo Motsepe.

Secret plan for King Charles’ death scrubs out Prince Harry

King Charles’s cancer diagnosis means a series of plans have been put in place in case of the worst – and one son won’t be happy.

Emergencies, the royal family has known a few. An invasion by a foreign superpower (hey Normandy), revolts (see: Peasants; Glorious), plague (bubonic), finding an armada on their doorstep (the Spanish), the French trying again, Protestantism, the Dutch and the French again.

Right now, the palace is having another emergency, the only upside of which is that no one needs to worry about warships sailing up the Thames. (Hang on. Do Prince Harry and Meghan the Duchess of Sussex have a boat? Someone should check.)

On 5 February, Buckingham Palace made history when it announced that King Charles has cancer. It was brave, it ushered in a new era of palace transparency and it immediately begged the question of courtiers and aides, ummm, do you chaps have a plan? A plan for what happens if His Majesty isn’t up to carrying out his duties while he undergoes treatment?

The answer is yes, there is one – and one that, we now know, does not involve prodigal son and TV-producing putterer Harry.

Despite recent noises from the duke that suggest he wants to patch things up with his family and maybe even, you know, open a bridge or two to help out, the answer is in. The duke has been cut out of the picture.

Within hours of the palace putting out their big ‘C’ statement, Harry was headed for Los Angeles airport to make the 11-hour flight to see his Pa. There, however, he was given only a reported 30 minute meeting with the King because His Majesty had a helicopter to catch to weekend at his 29-bedroom country pile, Sandringham. King stuff, okay?

Still, the palace let it be known that Charles was ‘touched’ by Harry’s gesture.

This warming of trans-Atlantic relations, for the 76th time, got press and public hopes up that a tentative reconciliation might be on the cards, a situation only bolstered by the duke not immediately running off to share intimate details of the face-to-face with a friendly American TV outlet.

Then, while in Canada promoting the 2025 Invictus Games, Harry spoke to Good Morning America and said, prepare yourself, nice, warm things about his family like he thought that his father’s cancer diagnosis might help mend relations.

Then came la pièce de résistance – a story by the Times ’ assistant editor Kate Mansey revealing that the duke, should he be called up, was ready and willing to get his old faithful J. Crew grey suit out of storage to go back to the UK to do some supportive official royal-ing to help out the short-staffed palace.

It was an offer that got slapped down faster than that time Princess Anne suggested using Charles’s hand-sown Highgrove wildflower meadow for her steeplechase club.

What has become clear is that the palace does indeed have a Plan B ready to roll out, should Charles’s treatment start to catch up with him – and it does not require the services of the man whose publisher charged viewers $38 last year to watch him unpack his feelings via live stream.

We know this detail thanks to the eminently well-sourced Katie Nicholl of Vanity Fair who has reported that the prospect of Harry being tapped to rejoin the official royal working ranks in the coming month is “unthinkable”.

“There is a carefully mapped out contingency plan in place if the king is unable to carry out public-facing engagements over the coming months, and none of these involve Prince Harry,” a well-placed source told Nicholls.

The carefully mapped out contingency plan does not involve Prince Harry. Picture: Don MacKinnon / AFP

As a friend of William’s told Vanity Fair : “The brothers are barely speaking so the idea of William wanting Harry to come back and represent the firm is both laughable and unthinkable”.

The first moment we might see this “contingency plan” wheeled out is 11 March, which will see the royal family gather at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Day service, quite the biggie on the royal calendar. While Charles has stepped back from public facing duties on the advice of doctors, it is unknown if His Majesty will be leading the delegation at the Abbey.

Per Nicholls, the Prince of Wales “is being lined up to stand in for King Charles if the monarch is unable to attend” that service.

The official line, according to the Times is that “the Prince of Wales may step in for His Majesty, nothing is scheduled currently, Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace are in constant communication and should the need arise, appropriate arrangements will be made”.

The mood music seems to be quiet assuredness as Charles continues very conspicuously and pointedly to roll into London for his weekly treatments waving like everything is fine and dandy.

Prince William “is being lined up to stand in for King Charles if the monarch is unable to attend”. Picture: Kin Cheung / POOL / AFP

However, as a courtier put it to the Guardian in 2017, “everybody who works in the palace is actually on borrowed time.”

Including the King.

We are venturing into some possibly dangerously macabre territory here but reality is a pesky thing that is impossible to avoid.

Royal staffers definitely don’t have that luxury after all.

Preparations for Queen Elizabeth’s death might have begun before the advent of TV (wild, no?) even though it only needed to be put into action after the advent of AI.

At some stage in the 1960s, the Coke bottle glasses-wearing mandarins of the palace, a lot of slightly gouty men in well-mended Saville Row suits looking askance at those mods and wondering why four men from Liverpool were making such a racket, started brainstorming.

Thick sheets of good paper, dribbly fountain pens, half-drunk cups of oolong cooling: Britain had a newish Queen , a woman only in her 30s and yet the planning for her death had to start.

The same holds true for Charles and for decades, Operation Menai Bridge, the code name for His Majesty’s passing, has been tucked away in a locked drawer somewhere.

And it’s here we have to ask the question: When Charles, hopefully decades from now, heads off to his just reward, what part will Harry play ? Does or will the duke feature in these other, sadder plans?

Does or will the duke feature in these other, sadder plans? Picture: BBC

Much of that answer lies with the newly acceded King William V, a man Harry has previously described as his “beloved brother and arch nemesis”. Menai Bridge might set out the unthinkably vast minutiae of a sovereign’s death but in the hours after Charles’s death, there will be decisions only the new sovereign can make and “everything,” according to the Guardian , will need to be “signed off” by both the traditional organiser of royal funerals, the Duke of Norfolk, and the new King.

Which is to say, it will be up to William how prominent, or not, a part Harry will be given.

As an old friend of the prince’s told the Daily Beast ’s Tom Sykes late last year, William “absolutely f*cking hates him.”

The 2023 publication of the duke’s autobiography Spare , coming after his and wife Meghan the Duchess of Sussex’s Netflix six-parter and their royal denture-rattling Oprah interview, ushered in a new, grim phase in brotherly relations.

As that friend told Sykes: “Harry sold his family out to the media for millions of dollars, and William can’t forgive that breach of trust.”

So, given this, how might the prince behave, what choices might he make concerning his wayward sibling, in the hours and days after his accession and ahead of Charles’s funeral? Over uniforms, seating arrangements, travel and children?

The blowback on the prince, should he be seen to be punishing his brother at such a sad time, would be swift and immense but once the official proceedings are done, the possibility is that William will all but excise the Sussexes for good.

Last year, in a separate piece, a friend of the Prince of Wales told the Beast’s Sykes: “I don’t think anyone expects Harry to get an invite to William’s coronation.”

All this said, Charles is a man who has, until this year, enjoyed robust health and a diet high in seeds and low in Mars bars. His maternal grandmother lived to 101 and his parents both into their late 90s. With those impressive genes, hopefully we will have a very long time until the next coronation comes.

Congenital Macrothrombocytopenia (CM)

Congenital Macrothrombocytopenia (CM)

Congenital Macrothrombocytopenia (CM) is a mild disease which normally does not have any impact on an affected dog’s health or lifespan but can cause concern if noticed on routine bloodwork without knowing the cause. It is a blood disease resulting in low numbers of very large platelets. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.

Curly Coat Dry Eye Syndrome

Curly Coat Dry Eye Syndrome

Curly Coat Dry Eye Syndrome is a genetic cause of eye and skin problems in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies. The disease also caused an unsually tight curly coat texture. There is a DNA test available to identify if breeding Cavaliers are carrying the gene for Curly Coat Dry Eye Syndrome.

About cavaliers, vital, energetic, active, loving, the cavalier king charles spaniel makes the perfect family pet, but it must be stressed they are dogs that belong with people. they are not dogs to be left alone or housed outside as they thrive on human contact., history of the breed in australia.

Toy spaniels in a variety of colours have been kept as ladies companions and pets in Royal and Noble homes since at least the 16th century. They are depicted in many paintings and were especially loved by the English monarchs, Charles I and Charles II whose names are indivisibly linked with the breed.   Even when Pugs became the favourite dogs at court, toy spaniels were widely kept as companions, were modelled as Staffordshire statues and depicted on greeting cards right through Victorian and Edwardian times. However when dog showing emerged as a competitive sport, the toy spaniels being seen were bred for a very flat face and a high domed skull – the “King Charles” as we know it today. Gradually the original type with the longer nose all but disappeared.

It wasn’t until an American gentleman offered valuable prizes at Cruft’s in 1926 for a spaniel of the “old type”, that a small band of enthusiasts headed by Mrs Pitt embarked on the slow process of selective breeding to revive the almost forgotten breed. While these longer nosed and flatter skull dogs were obviously related to the “Charlies”, a distinguishing name was needed so “Cavalier” was added.   They rapidly became popular with separate registration being granted in 1945 and the first show was held in 1946.

When Europeans first established the colonies in Australia, the settlers arrived accompanied by all manner of goods and chattels including animals and undoubtedly many much loved family pets made the long voyage. Among them must have been small toy spaniels.  That they were here is evidenced by many paintings. One such being “The Ladies Pet” by Samuel Dexteer painted in Sydney in 1855 and in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia.

However the  “modern” history of the breed here begins in 1960 with the arrival from NZ of the blenheim bitch Soyland Begonia who was in whelp to Angelo of Crustadele (UK). She was owned by Mrs Esler (Oakland) and became Australia’s first champion.  She was closely followed by the bitch, Scarlett (UK) who came out with Mr & Mrs Phillpott (Lancresse). In Sydney Mr & Mrs Dixon (Dai Jon) brought Justice of Eyeworth, the first wholecolour Suntop Ida and the first ruby dog Louis of Ulting.  When Mrs Esler’s dog Lovage of Ttiweh arrived, puppies by him from Begonia, her daughters and from Scarlett provided the foundation stock for several other states together with puppies from the Dixon’s dogs. The 60’s pioneers also included Myra Leach (Leagay), Helena Hendry (Gaysprite), Shirlee Leach (Garaig) who is still active with Cavaliers today and a much loved Life Member and Patron of the Sydney Club.  These prefixes dominated the early years.

Later Lovage and Begonia went to WA to Betty Patterson and Betty Reading who established their Pellemelle Cavaliers with the addition of stock from NZ and then in the mid sixties brought out Australia’s first Eng Ch Pargeter Trillium of Ttiweh.

Interest in the breed grew steadily if slowly and a small group of breeders in most of the States got the breed off to a sound start.  A club was formed in NSW in 1968 and the Victorian Club followed in 1971.  Gradually Cavaliers became better known to the general public, and entries at shows grew.  During the 1970’s began the veritable flood of imported Cavaliers to all parts of Australia, an influx which seems to continue unabated to the present.  Ch Gaysprite the Regent became the first All Breed Best in Show winner in 1971 and E/Aust Ch Amantra Bohemian Rhapsody (UK) the first “Royal” BIS winner (Canberra 1981)

1978 marked the 10th Anniversary of the NSW Club and to celebrate, the Club took the then very ambitious and adventurous decision to bring its Patron, Lady Forwood, to judge.   This was at a time when “overseas” judges were a rarity. Expenses were shared with the Tiki and Canterbury clubs in NZ.   The entry of 211 was magnificent and justified the effort.  It was also decided to attempt the publication of a Year Book to document  history and progress of the breed in Australia, another “first”  –  The NSW Club Year Book remains the only annual publication on the breed and previous issues provide a fascinating glimpse of famous dogs of the past who, in many cases, still have an enormous influence today.

Since the 1970’s there has been a steady growth in numbers of Cavaliers.  Other States, in addition to NSW and Victoria, now have their breed clubs – Canberra  formed in 1991, South Australia in 1993, Queensland in 2002 and Tasmania in 2009. All the clubs are very active in all aspects associated with the Cavaliers, holding shows judged by a mixture of local and international specialist judges, predominantly British but recently widening in scope to include respected specialists from other parts of the world. The clubs also have educational days, assist with the training of new judges, provide a rescue service for Cavalier in distress.

Cavaliers also shine in Obedience, Agility, Fly Ball, as Therapy dogs, and as  real

“comforters” when they visit nursing homes and hospitals.

In more recent years, in the light of increased information on health issues and a growing awareness among breeders of the necessity to maintain high standards in their breeding programs, the NSW Club now holds regular heart and eye clinics with specialist vets and encourages MRI scanning to screen for the neurological condition known as SM (Syringomelia).

The world is now a much “smaller” place  and with the increasing use of the internet, email lists and facebook, information and photos are widely distributed and Cavalier enthusiast keep in close touch worldwide. Quarantine restrictions have been eased so that dogs can travel to be shown and to be used in breeding programs. While we still continue to bring Cavaliers from the UK, the original homeland of the breed, it is now a  very international world and Cavaliers of the highest quality are being bred in many countries.  Australian bred Cavaliers have traveled abroad and proved successful in the strongest of competition.

Cavaliers are now among the most popular companion dogs, being suited to many situations: for families, for the elderly, in the city and the country.

They bring joy and delight to their owners and enrich their lives. They are truly “spaniels gentle and comforters”.

History of the Breed

The Cavalier is descended from the Toy Spaniels of Europe and first appeared in the courts of England with the reign of Queen Mary.

The breed, which appears in many of the great paintings by the Masters, received its name from King Charles II. 'The Merry Monarch'. Charles the Second was devoted to his dogs - almost to the point of addiction. They travelled everywhere and the sign "Beware of the Dog" probably originated in his court, meaning not that they were dangerous, but rather 'Don't tread on them!'

They became virtually extinct in the Victorian and Edwardian eras as short-nosed breeds took the fore.

By 1923 the incentive for revitalization of the old-type Toy Spaniel was provided by American Roswell Eldridge who offered prizes of 25 pounds for the Best Dog & Bitch of this type at Crufts.

The name Cavalier was added when the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club was founded in 1928 to further develop the breed. It was not until 1945 that The Kennel Club (England) granted separate registration from the King Charles Spaniel.

Outlook on Life

Known in some circles as the Royal Spaniel, the Comforter Spaniel, or the Spaniel Gentle, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is truly among the nobility of toy dogs with his limpid eyes, quiet dignity, and love of all things great and small.

Typically the Cavalier is fearless and sporting in nature, yet at the same time gentle and affectionate. He is completely guileless and does not seem to have the capacity to anticipate danger or to fathom that any creature might ever mean to do him harm.

Children and Cavaliers are great friends and supporters of each other, though small children should always be supervised with pets of any kind.

The Cavalier is not a dog who will boost your ego with his unflagging loyalty - though he will always have his most favorite people, he will also love whomever is serving dinner that night... A Cavalier does not do well in a kennel nor is he an outside dog.

He will only thrive if he is an integral part of family life - and he will gladly live as either Prince or Pauper to be close to the people he loves.

Description

The Cavalier is a sturdy animal measuring between 12-13 inches at the shoulder weighing between 12-18 pounds (5.4 -8.1kg) weight is proportionate to height with a slight variation permissible.

The coat is long, silky and free from curl, though a slight wave is permissible. Feathering on ears, legs and tail should be long and the feathering on the feet is a feature of the breed (often referred to as bedroom slippers).

No trimming or artificial colouring of the dog is permitted; however, it is permissible and often desireable, to remove the hair growing between the pads on the underside of the foot. The Cavalier comes in four colour varieties: Blenheim, Black and Tan, Tri-Coloured and Ruby.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

GROUP 1 - TOYS

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel of today is the direct descendant of the small Toy Spaniels, seen in so many of the pictures of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was under the Stuarts, that they were given the royal title of King Charles Spaniels. History tells us that King Charles II was seldom seen without two, three or more at his heels.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, a special strain of red and white Toy Spaniels was bred at Blenheim Palace, by the Dukes of Marlborough. This strain became well known for their sporting qualities, as well as their claims as ladies’ companions.

In Queen Victoria’s reign, breeders started to hold shows, which introduced a new fashion for the breed: dogs with a shorter face. The gradual evolution of the flat face of the King Charles Spaniel is still popular today and has created a very lovely breed.

At the same time, Mr Roswell Eldridge, an American and a great lover of Toy Spaniels, came over to England and was disappointed to find that there were none of the little nosey spaniels left. He immediately set about trying to right this by offering prizes at Crufts for dogs of the same variety seen in King Charles II’s time. The King Charles breeders did not take these classes very seriously, as they had worked hard for years to do away with the long nose, so it was hardly a popular move. Gradually, as the big prizes came to an end, only a few enthusiasts were left to carry on the breeding experiment.

In 1928 a club was founded, and the title “Cavalier King Charles Spaniel” was chosen. The standard of the breed was drawn up, which is practically the same as it is today. The breed was granted separate registration by the English Kennel Club in 1946 and today is one of the most popular companion dogs.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is active, graceful and well balanced with a gentle expression, weighing between (5.4 - 8.1 kg), with a slight variation permissible.

The coat is long, silky and free from curl, though a slight wave is permissible. Feathering on ears, legs and tail should be long, with the feathering on the feet a feature of the breed.

No trimming or artificial colouring of the dog is permitted. The Cavalier comes in four colour varieties: Blenheim (red and white markings), Black and Tan (Black with tan markings over the eyes, inside ears and under the tail), Tri-Coloured (black and white with tan markings) and Ruby (all over rich red).

Temperament

Known in some circles as the Royal Spaniel, the Comforter Spaniel, or the Spaniel Gentle, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is truly among the nobility of toy dogs, with his limpid eyes, quiet dignity and love of all things great and small.

Typically the Cavalier is fearless and sporting in nature, yet at the same time, gentle and affectionate. A Cavalier does not do well in a kennel, nor is he an outside dog, being happiest as a member of the family, joining in family activities.

Cavaliers are generally a happy, healthy breed of dog. However, as with many other breeds, there may be genetic health concerns within the breed. It is possible to use DNA testing to screen for some of these conditions, but DNA tests are not available for the major health concerns at this time. A great deal of research is being done internationally to investigate the causes.

There are two, main, health concerns for Cavaliers: MVD or Mitral Valve Disease which affects the heart and CM/SM or Syringomyelia - a neurological problem. Both of these conditions are progressive, meaning that dogs may only develop the problem or symptoms, if any, later in life.

It should be stressed that not all Cavaliers will be affected by either of these conditions. The vast majority of Cavaliers are generally happy, healthy dogs, many leading long and happy lives, living well into their “teens”.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of NSW encourages health testing by its members and organises health clinics during the year to enable breeders to get their breeding stock tested on a regular basis and invites veterinary specialists to club meetings, to give presentations on all health aspects of breeding Cavaliers. These are conditions which reputable breeders are aware of, and those intending to purchase a puppy are recommended to buy from breeders who are prepared to discuss and advise on these concerns.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has always been considered a natural breed and enthusiasts have tried to keep it that way. This has helped the Cavalier to remain an unexaggerated breed of dog.

Suitability

Children and Cavaliers are great friends and supporters of each other. In fact, the Cavalier will suit a person of any age, from 1 to 100 years, as they are adaptable to both active, family life and as companions to older and less active members of the community.
