Fleeting as the season may be, it’s truly mostly a favorite of our Vogue editors—a time we can let our hair down and take a moment to indulge in some summer fun. A stark contrast to last summer under lockdown, this time around, we’re taking the time to revisit the places and people we once took for granted. Summers in Martha’s Vineyard, or the white sandy beaches of Antigua—or like this write: the cornfields of Virginia—any excuse to take time for yourself and loved ones, is the best sort of Out Of Office.
Scroll below to visit the places and fashions our editors have put together, which may inspire you to add a few more things to your checked luggage. A fashionable vacation outfit recap, below.

My mother is Swiss, so it’s been a long-standing summer tradition for me to visit my family there for as long as I remember. Hiking is basically my favorite thing to do, and nothing really compares to hiking in the Swiss Alps. I’ll be packing my new On Cloud hiking boots, which are literally as light as air—which means I can use my baggage allowance to pack more chocolate on the way home. I have a reading list as long as my arm that includes Raven Leilani ’s debut novel Luster . Bathing suits are a must too, since there will definitely be lakeside action on the horizon too, and Matteau is my new favorite for all things swim.

I was recently in Puerto Rico’s St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort. It was a short weekend getaway but enough time to enjoy a small patch of the palm-tree laden beach (which stretches 4 miles) on the property plus a good old fashioned clay tennis court. For the occasion, I wore a new tennis dress that was waiting to make its debut. I forgot to bring proper sneakers but Keds did just fine for a quick match. I accessorized with a gingham headband and a red lip because everything looks better with a bit of lipstick .

Usually I’m a neutral girl, but after spending over a year mostly in the house I just want to wear bold fun colors that make me feel happy. For a recent day trip to the Hamptons I paired my black swimsuit with green pants, yellow sandals, and coordinating sunglasses for a pop of color. And I took this smile-inducing blue dress and orange crossbody bag to Puerto Rico.

Not leaving the country in over a year has me ready for a proper tropical getaway! And though my plans for this summer’s escape are still to be determined, my seaside looks are well-planned out, drawing from the green hues of palm trees and white sand beaches.

I’m going to Southwestern France to visit my family who live there. We haven’t been to visit in two years and my six nieces and nephew haven’t met my one year old son Arthur so there will be lots of cousin playtime as well as lots of shopping at the local farmer’s markets and cooking. I’ll be leaning into my French country vibes with this gingham Dôen dress, lace-up espadrilles , and a market tote. Artie will be wearing some farm-themed pjs and we’ll all be reading children’s board books!

I recently wrapped up a summer getaway to Turks & Caicos and I can honestly say, it was a dream vacation. With little to no planning, two of my closest girlfriends and I had booked only our hotel and flight and figured out everything else on the spot. From sunset cruises, to parasailing, to oceanfront dinners and poolside afternoons, it was truly an unforgettable experience. Throughout the trip, I essentially lived in breezy caftans, swimsuits, nap dresses and always had a raffia beach bag by my side—plus plenty of sunscreen!

I spent July 4th in Antigua and really leaned into the swimwear-as-ready-to-wear thing. For me, that means a long cotton skirt with a bikini top—usually my matte black Marysia tank—and an unbuttoned linen shirt . It’s a mix I plan to repeat for the rest of my (yet to be planned) summer weekends. If I’m not by the water, I’ll probably be wearing one of my favorite Rhode mini dresses—they’re so easy and come in the best, brightest prints!

For my birthday I drove from Upstate New York to Joshua Tree, California with my partner and friends. I’ve always wanted to drive cross country—also any excuse to wear a bucket hat, I will take it! This trip was a breath of fresh air from my time spent indoors. It was a much needed thrill to wear a complete outfit (major top half Zoom fatigue).

While everyone escapes the city, I’m sneaking IN. For my birthday vacation, Cody and I took a Subaru-powered road trip to New York where Ari Heckman and Ethan Feirstein have placed their celebrity dog, Georgie (a Broadway legend), and West Village townhouse (a vintage gem staged for sale by Ari’s company ASH) into our care. Every day in this space is the best day of my liiiiiife—and walking dogs on Christopher Street is the attention of a lifetime! So see-and-be-seen. I’ve also raked in fantasy friend gifts, like a single sleeper hoop earring from Pam Carroll, and an unreal Hermes 1998 vinyl Kelly bag from Jesseca Jones, our Vogue staffer-turned-vintage-expert for What Goes Around Comes Around. I’m wearing silky pajamas and toasting sparkling water on the stoop every night singing “I’m in love with the neighhhhborhoooood!”

Much like everyone else on your IG timeline, my vacation destination is Miami. I’m traveling with some of my closest friends to take a quick reset from NYC’s fast pace. I always keep my wardrobe in mind before any trip and never fail to overpack. Summer is my favorite season for clothing because I love traveling to warm climates: strappy heels, a statement shoulder bag, and a dress is my go-to.

As a born and bred New Englander, I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve never ventured up to Maine. With a reputation that boasts beautiful coastlines, boundless adventures, and a buzzy food scene, Portland felt like the perfect place to book a last-minute vacation this summer. My Ralph Lauren Americana sweater will save me from chilly nights near the water, and my Staud netted handbag couldn’t be more on-brand for an afternoon spent lobstering with locals. I’ll make sure to pack my favorite Madhappy hat and my go-to Girlfriend collective sports bra that can easily double as a casual daytime top while out and about. For practical (and posh!) footwear, I’m packing my pearly Arizona sandals, which will come in handy for rocky beach walks that will roll right into dinner downtown.

I’ve gone to Martha’s Vineyard every summer of my life. The Vineyard is more casual than other resort destinations—you’ll find no black tie galas, model-filled yachts, or designer pop-up shops—but that is part of its magic. The air is clearer, the energy is calmer, and the stars are brighter. John Belushi credited the island as the only place he could get a decent night’s sleep. The Kennedys, Clintons, and Obamas find refuge along its beaches. A perfect August evening consists of Shakespeare at the Tisbury Amphitheater followed by a lobster feast at L’etoile . For more casual fare, head up island to the Menemsha Galley , which offers the best lobster roll and sunset view you’ll find.

I’m heading to Paris with my husband in August, and I couldn’t be more excited to explore a city I haven’t visited in years. Whenever I travel, I try to pack easily interchangeable pieces within the same color palette so that I can layer up or swap them out as needed. This summer I’m all about loose linen shirts, relaxed denim shorts , and of course, comfortable sneakers for long days of walking. I’m also fully committed to hats for an added layer of sun safety!

If all goes according to plan, I will be spending two weeks this August visiting a dear friend at her home in the tiny beachtown of Agua Amarga, Spain. I’m looking forward to plenty of beach time and, of course, leisurely paella lunches. Anytime I’m on holiday somewhere warm, I live in oversized shirting—over a bikini by day or with a pair of wide-leg trousers at night. My Clare V. tote is also the perfect slouchy travel bag and is always filled with the only piece of makeup one needs on vacation—the tried and true Olio E Osso Balm.

My summertime mantra is: Work Hard, Play Harder. I’ll be spending time at my parent’s home off the Chesapeake Bay, pretending I’m an HGTV designer as they renovate their home in the oceanside cornfields of Virginia. Sitting out with my dad drinking bourbon by the firepit and cooking up blue crab feasts with my mom is a pastime I look forward to every year. One of my most favorite haunts is a little known stretch of beach that I’m not even going to tell you about because of how secret it is. (I call it a secret but pretty sure you can sleuth it out with one Google search.) Over the course of the next few weeks I plan on perfecting my beach set-up , umbrella, and all. It’s a tough assignment, but someone’s gotta do it.

In June, I went to a beautiful wedding of an old friend in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. However, you can’t fly directly there from New York so a stop in one of my favorite places–Mexico City–was certainly in order! After a quick morning pastry stop at Panadería Rosetta, I visited Luis Barragan’s Casa Gilardi (pictured here). A flat sandal, easy trouser, and transitional knit is the ideal city-exploring outfit, comfortable but still cool!

The 14 Fashion Essentials You Need For Your Upcoming Road Trip
Including a few must-haves for your car, too.
Road trips are always a good idea, until you realize how much planning actually goes into them. Not only do you have to make sure your car is in tip-top shape for a lengthy drive, but there's also mapping out the route (and a backup route if you need to detour), booking hotels and Airbnbs, and making sure you have some fun photo ops, nearby gas stations, and food spots along the way. But don't let this discourage you! The prepping and journey are both well worth it, and luckily, we have a solid list of items for your go-to outfit, along with some essentials that you never knew your car needed.
When it comes to clothes, accept the fact that you'll be sitting on your butt in a car for a long time. Go for comfort, but opt for polished silhouettes in case you want to grab a meal or stroll through the park that's along your route. There are plenty of loungewear options available now, so you'll likely find a few options that you'll love. Add a tailored coat, blazer, or cozy fleece jacket and you're ready to hit the road in style.
Ahead, shop the fashion essentials and car must-haves for your upcoming road trip. Have fun and safe travels!
We only include products that have been independently selected by NYLON's editorial team. However, we may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.
Comfort is key when it comes to getting dressed for a long drive. This soft hoodie comes with matching pants for a cozy and put-together look.
The straight-leg silhouette makes this sweatpant a great option to wear anywhere. Throw on a blazer or fleece when you have to make a public-facing pitstop.
A stylish and very functional handbag option for travel that's roomy enough to store all of your important belongings and keep them close to you at all times, too.
These high-top sneakers are wearable for long hours and they go with any outfit. We love the pop of neon on this vintage-inspired pair.
A road trip is never complete without a fully stocked cooler with your favorite snacks and drinks. (Plus, a hangry passenger is never a good thing.) This YETI cooler is designed to fit behind the seat of a car.
A pair of chunky rectangle frames that make a statement and protect your eyes from the sun while driving.
And if your sunglasses aren't cutting it, then a baseball cap will do the trick. (Also a good solution for bad hair days.)
Hand sanitizer is a must-have everywhere you go. Noshinku has a great selection of scents (lavender, bergamot, and eucalyptus) and its packaging is sleek and slim enough to keep on hand at all times. This Duo Discovery set comes with a larger bottle to store in your car for a quick germs-be-gone spritz.
Two face masks are better than one because you'll always have an extra mask at the ready. Plus, they're tie-dyed, which is always a good thing.
You'll never fully realize how much you actually needed a chain for your mask until you try it. Trust us on this one.
Your road trip might involve longer stays in some cities and a quick one-nighter in others. Bring a large tote (packed with toiletries and a change of clothes) if you're only spending the night and then keep everything else in a carry-on suitcase in the car. That way, you're not lugging around more than you need.
Just because hydration is important while flying doesn't mean it isn't when you're on the road. You can never go wrong with a reliable Nalgene in tow.

There's an art to going on a road trip, and now that cell phones have made navigating a no-brainer, we can really focus in on the finer points. From what you wear to how you get there (and bringing along your own sustenance in case of a late arrival), it's about the journey and the destination.
Madewell Denim Kimono
Comfier than a classic denim jacket, this kimono style can be wrapped, tugged, and tucked around your body or over your lap with blanket-like ease.
Paige Kensington Mule
The ace shoe for car trips is a slip-on that packs a style punch. Beloved denim label Paige has just branched out with shoes that capture its blue-jean-cool persona.
Jet Set Candy Charm
Let's bring back the idea of souvenirs. Commemorate wherever you're headed (or passing through) with pretty little pieces inspired by old-school charm bracelets.
Sleeper Mini Dress
For road trip clothes that are as comfy as pajamas, look for something that basically is pajamas. This breezy linen dress is meant for sleeping or cruising, making it ideal for a long-haul drive.
Lila Pinot Grigio
A stylish survivalist is always ready. Bring your own wine, no corkscrew required, so you can wind down at the end of a long day of driving.
Krewe Orleans Blinker Sunglasses
The clean lines of classic aviator shades are given a cool touch with tortoiseshell blinkers that hinge in and out to combat peripheral rays.
Jaguar XF Sportbrake
When it's all about the journey, you want said journey to be nice. A luxe ride is paramount for enjoying the trip, making the perfect scenario roomy, plush, and with all the bells and whistles you can dream of.
