6 Best Hidden Travel Wallets to Keep Your Valuables Safe on the Go

Losing your wallet is never an enjoyable experience. Throw yourself into a foreign country and suddenly, it’s a whole lot worse.

Pickpocketing, theft, or general carelessness - the reason why you’re now wallet-less doesn’t matter. But it’s the stress that comes with replacing your ID and credit cards is the worst part .

Canceling and requesting new cards - especially without a fixed address is a nightmare. I’m still waiting on a replacement physical card and mine was blocked 3 months ago (someone treated themselves to 15 Google gift cards on my dime).

So, how do you minimize the risk ? First, invest in a hidden wearable wallet - one that can’t be easily accessed by those around you. The second tip is to split your valuables across two locations - one on your person and another hidden wallet in your rucksack. If one becomes compromised, you’ve not lost everything - there’s still a backup waiting for you.

So what should you look for in a hidden travel wallet and what are the top options available on the market today ? Check out our guide to the top hidden travel wallets below.

Best RFID Travel Organizer

Thule Crossover 2

A tale of two parts , the Crossover 2 is a travel organizer first and a hidden travel wallet second .

How We Chose Our Picks

Comfort (breathable materials and adjustable straps).

For wearable travel wallets, comfort is a priority for us . An uncomfortable wallet will spend the trip in one place and one place only - in your rucksack. We’ve searched for the most comfortable travel wallets with a focus on materials and adjustability to find the perfect fit.

It’s important to choose a travel wallet that’s large enough to carry all of your valuables . Set aside everything you hope to store to gain a good idea of the size that you’ll need. Common packables include passports, phones, bank cards, cash, etc.

The more that you pack into a wearable travel wallet, the harder it is to conceal . If you’re hoping to hide wallets, cameras, etc. it’s best to invest in a non-wearable . Wearables are best suited to slender, lightweight items (passports, cash, bank cards, mobile phone).

Additional Security Features

Additional security features, such as an RFID-blocking lining , offer peace of mind when traveling in a population-dense area. Store credit cards and IDs and prevent unexpected card activation when out and about.

Hidden pockets are always handy - but can be cumbersome with wearable wallets. These are particularly good for storing jewelry , but everyone has different valuables and preferences!

Water resistance

Water resistance works in two ways for hidden travel wallets. On rainy days , a permeable travel wallet can lead to a soggy passport - a real recipe for disaster.

But for wearable travel wallets, sweat resistance can be just as big of a problem on super warm or active days. An uncomfortable, sweaty stomach can cause damp passport problems just as easily as a torrential downpour. A combination of sweat-wicking and waterproof characteristics is the gold standard for travel wallets.

The last thing you want to worry about while jet setting is juggling your wallet, passport, and boarding pass as you make your way through security checkpoints. Travel wallets offer a sleek and simple way to streamline your belongings and stay organized while on the go, as they’re typically large enough to fit your passport and other essentials including train tickets, boarding passes, cell phones, and credit cards.

We’ve researched dozens of travel wallets from top brands, and tested many of them on our own travel days to provide real-world insights. We considered capacity, ease of use, durability, and overall value in order to narrow down the best options for every type of traveler.

Best Overall

Leatherology zip around travel wallet.

This ultra-functional pick fully zips up so your items stay secure.

If you carry a small purse or bag, this may be too large to fit inside.

Leatherology’s Zip Around Travel Wallet checks all our boxes: it’s crafted from luxuriously soft leather, features a secure zip-around closure to protect your travel documents, and has a roomy interior that can easily hold two passports as well as your boarding pass, foreign currency, and credit cards or hotel keys. We were able to easily store one passport, paper and coin currencies, five cards, and a boarding pass inside, with ample room to add a pen, train tickets, and several more cards.

With so many important documents stored in one place, a secure closure is of paramount importance: we found that the rugged zipper is durable and easy to maneuver, offering much-needed peace of mind.

Other features we love are the exterior pocket, where you can tuck a boarding pass for easy retrieval, plus two large pockets for separating various currencies or multiple passports — making this a great choice for whoever the designated passport-holder may be. While its large size may be difficult to fit in a small purse, it means it can fit international currencies of different sizes — a benefit that we found quickly outweighed the cons. We also love the zippered pocket for coins and the see-through window for an ID.

Best Organization

Smythson marshall travel wallet in panama.

This sleek, stylish wallet is made of durable crossgrain leather with three labeled compartments.

The lightweight, flexible leather will last for the long run — but note that it’s priced accordingly.

Navigating airports and busy train stations can be stressful enough as is — keeping track of your essential documents shouldn’t be another worry on your list. This elegant wallet will help you stay organized in style. While it comes at a steep price, it’s backed by the trusted reputation of Smythson, a British luxury leather goods brand that’s repeatedly proven the staying power of its pieces over the past 130 years.

Crafted from lightweight calfskin crossgrain leather, it’s both flexible and durable, promising to safely store your belongings through years of travel. A zip compartment allows you to separate out coins and bills, while a boarding pass slot and a roomy pocket with three labeled compartments offers space to tuck your tickets, passport, and more. The flap closure, while stylish, is slightly less secure than a zipper, although the snap hardware is quite durable. Choose from six shades like classic black or navy, or a cheery peony pink.

The Details: Crossgrain calf leather | 9.5 x 5 inches

Best for Phone

Bandolier mila magsafe charging crossbody.

Beyond its convenient hands-free crossbody design, this case also wirelessly charges your phone.

It’s only compatible with iPhones.

We wish this case was compatible with every type of smartphone, because it’s a true game changer. Made of luxe pebbled leather, it’s a travel wallet with a drop-proof case for your iPhone included (but you’ll likely still want to invest in a glass screen protector to keep your tech safe). The attached card portion has two slots, each of which can accommodate 3-4 cards, and it doubles as a phone stand when flipped open. The phone case itself is MagSafe-compatible which is a huge bonus while traveling so you don’t need to remove the phone from this wallet case for charging.

It’s extremely chic and hangs securely from a detachable crossbody strap that’s extendable from 48-54 inches, so you can adjust it to whatever length suits you best. Choose from a black case with gold, pewter, or silver accents to suit your personal style.

The Details: Pebble leather | iPhone 12 to 15 Pro Max

Best Continental

Tumi voyageur zip-around continental wallet.

The zip-around closure offers maximum security for your belongings, plus the long external pocket is great for easy boarding pass access.

It’s not quite big enough to fit a passport.

Tumi is one of the most trusted brands in long-lasting luggage and travel accessories, and this continental wallet is a perfect example of why. Outfitted with a sturdy zip-around closure, it offers the highest protection for your valuables, ensuring nothing falls out even when tossed around in your bag. We love that there’s a front zip pocket as well as a back slip pocket, allowing you to quickly access your essentials without ever even opening your wallet. Inside the accordion-style wallet, there are ample compartments for your belongings, with 12 card slots, two slip pockets and three gusseted sections. It also features a two-year warranty for added peace of mind.

Best Wristlet

Athleta coffee run clutch.

It’s super sleek and the material is easy to clean.

It’s larger than it looks in the photos.

This slim wristlet lays flat when empty, but can fit just about everything you need for a day on the go. At 8 inches long, it’s large enough to accommodate your phone, earbuds, credit cards, car keys, and passport — and, even if it looks a little bulky when all packed up, it still feels secure on your wrist. The strap and carabiner which attaches it are sturdy enough to be tossed around a fair amount, and the recycled nylon that makes up the wallet itself is durable and water-resistant. The main zippered pocket is a safe space for your phone and cash, while the front snap-closure pocket fits a passport. The interior credit card slots are also RFID protected.

The Details: Recycled nylon | 8 x 0.5 x 4.5 inches

Best Designer

Bottega veneta passport case.

The contrast lining offers a bold and unexpected surprise that’s sure to impress.

There’s no zippered pocket or snap closure, so you won’t be able to carry coins.

This bifold wallet is so buttery soft that you’ll find yourself constantly reaching into your pocket — not to check if it’s there, but just to enjoy the feel of it. It’s understated yet classic, with Bottega Veneta’s instantly-recognizable Intrecciato (interwoven) calfskin leather. While it’s available in three neutral shades, we love that the smooth leather lining comes in a contrasting color, creating a delightfully unexpected interplay when you open the black case to reveal the brand’s iconic bright green interior. Minimalists will appreciate the subtlety of the design, which features five card slots and two large pockets to tuck away your passport and other documents. While this is perhaps the most stylish pick on this list, it isn’t the most secure — there’s no closure, so you’ll want to take good care to keep it safe.

The Details: Intrecciato calfskin leather | 3.7 x 5.2 inches

Best Water-resistant

Monos metro folio kit.

The water-resistant vegan leather protects items against moderate moisture.

It’s fairly bulky to use as an everyday wallet.

We’ll come right out and say it: we’re obsessed with the Monos Metro Folio Kit. While it feels a bit large to tote around on its own, it’s built with a QuickSnap attachment, so that it can be easily attached to the brand’s Metro Backpack or Metro Duffel for convenient carrying. Inside, it's got a spot for everything you could possibly need. One side features 7 elastic loops, which can be used to secure anything from pens and charging cords to lip balms and earbud cases. The other side boasts a zippered pocket for coins, a key ring, 4 card slots, a small pocket for an SD card, plus two larger pockets for currency, your passport, or an eReader. It’s made from a gorgeous and highly water-resistant vegan leather — just note that it’s not fully waterproof. There are 9 colors to choose from, with classics like black and ivory or a more playful purple.

The Details: Vegan leather | 9 x 7 x 1.5 inches

Dagne Dover Accordion Travel Wallet

Even when full, this little wallet never feels bulky.

You may want to treat your leather before use in order to protect it and extend its lifespan.

At just 0.2 pounds, this pocket-sized wallet is ideal for minimalists who are looking for a place to stash their passport without all the bells and whistles of some larger models. The luxurious crafted pebble leather is designed to last a lifetime, particularly if you treat it with a waterproofing product first. We appreciate the nod towards sustainability too, as the lining is made of 55 percent recycled Repreve, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. Inside, there are two larger pockets for your passport and currency, plus six card slots (and one more external card slot). The magnetic closure is powerful, but may not offer enough peace of mind for more anxious travelers.

The Details: Pebble leather, recycled plastic | 6.75 x 0.5 x 4.25 inches

Best Money Belt

Raytix rfid money belt.

It’s made of a moisture-wicking fabric that helps avoid sweat build-up when worn around your waist.

It isn’t completely invisible beneath tighter clothes, especially if packed to capacity.

At just 1.13 ounces, this is an ultra-lightweight and reliable money belt option you can wear all day long without fuss. It features two zippered pockets in the front, which are spacious enough to hold your passport, IDs, cards, and currency, plus other travel essentials like train tickets and boarding passes. There’s also a back open mesh pocket and two small inner mesh pouches, which allow you to separate out currency to stay organized on the go. The product also comes with a large packing pad and pen, which we found superfluous as the pad doesn’t fit inside the pouch.

Made from a hardy nylon ripstop fabric, this feels sturdy enough to perform well over time. The moisture-wicking, breathable back panel keeps you cool and doesn’t trap sweat, plus the built-in belt is made from flexible elastic that is designed for a 27- to 41-inch waist, but can stretch to accommodate a bit more. We found the waist clip easy to adjust and very secure, which is a major factor in choosing a reliable money belt. It also felt soft against our skin throughout the day thanks to the padded mesh backing. If you’re worried about it being seen through your clothes, opt for looser garments or only toss in the essentials.

The Details: Nylon ripstop | 11.5 x 5.5 inches

Best Armband

Flexx id wrist wallet.

It offers quick and easy access to your belongings, while keeping them securely on your person.

It isn’t machine washable, so you’ll have to spot treat it with a leather cleaner or mild soap.

If you’re a smartwatch fan, you’ll love the Flexx ID Trekk Wearable Wallet, which similarly allows you to streamline all of your essentials into one convenient and always-visible place: your wrist! Unlike wearing your heart on your sleeve, this is an almost risk-free option for keeping your valuables safe from theft or misplacement. While it doesn’t have as much capacity as other travel wallets, it still manages to fit up to five cards. The front pocket is perfect for work IDs or hotel key cards that you typically need to remove and scan, as you can hold your arm up to a scanner without removing them and enter hands free. There’s also a back zippered pocket for added convenience, which fits small essentials like keys or cash. Note that it’s not super breathable, so it can get a bit moist in warm weather or if wearing it while working out. It’s also only available in one size, which fits wrists that are 6.5 to 7.5 inches — but other styles from the brand (like the Pro or Monty models) offer various sizes.

The Details: Leather, spandex, polyester, cotton | 5.51 x 3.94 x 0.79 inches

Best Convertible

Veci 2-in-1 magsafe compatible bifold wallet.

This wallet comes with a MagSafe detachable card case that attaches to your iPhone.

While the detachable card case can be used by anyone, the MagSafe feature only works with iPhones.

This ultra-slim bifold is perfectly pocket sized, making it a great choice for those who prefer to keep the bare essentials on them at all times. It features two compartments for all types of currency, plus 8 total card slots — two of which are horizontal and hidden. The best thing about this wallet is that you can detach a portion of it whenever you want to pare down to just 2 or 3 cards — but be warned that there’s a brief learning curve on figuring out how much pressure to apply to do so. The removable card case is MagSafe compatible, which means it uses a strong magnet to secure itself to your iPhone. The wallet also has magnetic shielding, in order to protect your cards from damage.

Best RFID-blocking

Zero grid travel neck wallet with rfid blocking.

It comes with 7 removable RFID-blocking sleeves, which can be used even if you take your belongings out of the wallet.

It’s a bit long and bulky.

While neck wallets aren’t for everyone, they are excellent at providing the highest level of security for your belongings. You can keep your most precious items — your passport, currency, phone, and other small items — close to your chest, wearing them discreetly beneath your clothes or on top of them. The Zero Grid Travel Neck Wallet has three zippered closures for maximum protection of your valuables with removable RFID-blocking sleeves. Made from water-resistant, ripstop nylon, this durable wallet comes with a number of additional features which we appreciate, including recovery tags and travel insurance that covers up to $300 if anything is ever stolen from your pouch.

The Details: Nylon | 7.5 x 5.7 inches

Best Budget

Zoppen passport holder travel wallet.

It’s budget-friendly but still has slots for everything you could need on your trip.

The faux leather doesn’t look as chic as pure leather alternatives.

Constructed from RFID-blocking vegan leather, The Zoppen Passport Holder Travel Wallet has consistently topped our favorite travel wallet lists over the years. It’s slim yet sturdy, with compartments for everything from credit cards and currency to a small smartphone (a rare feature — it accommodates anything under 5.8 inches long). This is truly a small storage miracle, with over 10 slots for hotel keys, transit passes, IDs, and more to help keep even the messiest among us organized on the go. Use the large slip pocket to keep track of your vaccine card and up to two passports (a particularly handy feature for parents traveling with kids), while the extended zippered pocket keeps various types of currency secure.

It’s also one of the more affordable options that made our list, and it’s definitely the best value purchase. It comes with a wristlet attachment, which is another convenient carrying option — although it becomes a bit unwieldy to use when the wallet is full. We love that it’s available in 18 vibrant colors, from cherry red to a scholarly brown. However, note that it features a snap closure, which doesn’t offer as much protection for your belongings as a zipper.

The Details: PU leather and aluminum | 5 x 7.7 x 1 inches

Best for Families

Valante travel document organizer.

There’s ample space to store the whole family’s passports and documents, plus it boasts versatile carrying options.

It’s extremely capacious which may be excessive if you’re only traveling with two passports and no change.

If you’re toting your entire family’s passports around, it’s imperative that you can rely on your passport case to keep your documents both organized and secure. We love the Valate RFID Passport Holder Wallet for its spacious interior, which can fit six passports and boasts four credit card slots, a zippered coin pouch, two large zippered pockets for bills, two stash pockets for other documents, and more. There’s even an external zip pocket that we found large enough to fit an iPhone, plus two more external slots to store boarding passes. We were able to fit everything we needed and more, which left us wishing that the wallet was slightly more compact. However, we appreciated the variety of carrying options, including a strap to wear it around your neck if you’ve got your hands full with the kids. Plus, it’s made out of moisture-resistant polyester, which is a breeze to spot clean in case of accidental spills.

The Details: Polyester | 10.2 x 6.1 inches

Best Colors

Lucrin geneva passport travel wallet.

It’s fashionable enough to use as your everyday wallet, and comes in five types of leather and dozens of rich tones.

It's fairly long.

We’re obsessed with the all-in-one design of this minimalist case, which offers 13 regular card slots, 3 larger card slots, a roomy zippered pocket for cash or important documents, plus two stash pockets for your passport and boarding pass. We tried it out on several flights and found the design to be intuitive, functional, and stylish, helping us to stay organized without sacrificing our style. Plus, the durable zippered pouch and button latch helped to secure everything inside.

While it’s on the larger size, it never felt cumbersome — we love that it’s stylish enough to double as an evening clutch for a night out, and that it can be comfortably packed into a backpack or larger purse while traveling. The price feels like a worthwhile investment, given the high-quality leather, which comes in smooth, granulated, square granulated, vegetable tanned, and crocodile-style calfskin options. You can completely personalize your pick by choosing from a rainbow of over two dozen shades, like cherry red or classic tan — making it a wonderful gift option for yourself or a fellow jetsetter.

The Details: Leather or calfskin | 9.8 x 4.9 inches

Tips for Buying a Travel Wallet

Decide how many compartments you need.

When purchasing a travel wallet, make sure it has enough slots for all of your travel needs. If you’re a frequent international flier, you might want to prioritize space for a passport, or something large enough to accommodate various currencies (and a coin pouch for countries in which coins are commonly used). If you’re looking for something more minimalist, you might want to opt for a wallet with a detachable card case as well, so that you can truly pare down to the basics.

Durability is key

A wallet that falls apart mid-trip is not just annoying, but potentially disastrous — especially if it’s housing your passport. Investing in a piece that’s well-made and ideally water-resistant is of the utmost importance for protecting your belongings. Leather (or high-quality vegan leather) and ripstop nylon are some of the sturdiest options for keeping your things secure.

Prioritize safety features

While zip closures aren’t necessary, they do offer the highest protection, as they secure your belongings from slipping out. Ideally, look for a wallet with at least one zippered pocket, to tuck away any small valuables. Hidden pockets for cards or cash are also important to help avoid flashing how much cash you’re carrying while you’re out and about. Easy access pockets on the exterior are additionally handy for quickly grabbing essentials like keys or public transit cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel wallets are typically larger in size than everyday or small wallets , as they’re designed to accommodate passports and other travel essentials, like boarding passes or train tickets. Most also have a pen loop, so you can store a writing utensil for easy access when filling out customs forms. Travel wallets may also feature more unique additions, like organizational tabs or attachable tracking capabilities.

RFID-blocking (radio frequency identification) wallets add an extra layer of protection for travelers who are concerned about the potential of someone wirelessly accessing the information stored in your credit cards. While this is a rare form of theft, it can’t hurt to opt for a wallet that offers the extra shield — although, unfortunately, there’s no way to tell if it’s actually working.

Certain wallets make sense for some activities, while other wallets make sense for other occasions. Here are some additional wallet-related items that you might find handy.

ESR Magnetic Wallet : This MagSafe wallet can do a bit of everything, including doubling as a phone stand, for a relatively low price. It can hold up to three cards at once.

Travelon RFID-Blocking Undergarment Waist Pouch : This simple waist pouch is a sleek solution that’s designed to be worn beneath your clothing so you don't lose anything to theft.

Zero Grid Travel Security Belt : Storing your cash in this normal-looking belt is a convenient choice for deterring pickpockets. It looks like an everyday belt, but it's actually equipped with a handy, secret pocket for your valuables.

Bellroy Travel Wallet In Essex England

Why We Like It: A professional-looking option that includes a pen.

What You Should Know: The hidden pocket flap is flimsy.

Bellroy’s Travel Wallet is a popular and competent offering that looks professional and has thoughtful internal organization. You can slide more than one passport inside, and there’s a divider in the money pocket to separate different currencies. Or, slide a boarding pass in one and your cash in the other.

Although the wallet looks similar in size to a standard wallet, it has a much larger footprint. This keeps it from fitting inside your front pocket and away from most back pockets. However, It should fit inside your sling , coat pocket, or daypack .

Though the exterior scratches and scuffs easily, it offers a unique, rugged, professional look that we dig. Plus, it comes with a micro-pen! That’s great for filling out your customs form on the plane before landing. What else could you ask for from a travel wallet?

Fjallraven Passport Wallet Gift Guide

Why We Like It: Internal organization feels more like a wallet with space for extras.

What You Should Know: It is a tad too big for a pocket but too small to require a sling.

The Fjallraven Passport Wallet utilizes G-1000 fabric, which we’re used to seeing on other products from the brand. It’s durable, looks professional, and makes the color pop. Paired with YKK zippers, this is a passport wallet that you can rely on for years to come.

The internal organization can handle your travel documents, credit cards, and more than one passport if you pack it wisely. Given how much you can fit inside, this wallet is larger than your daily carry, but it feels soft in your hand and looks professional and fun at the same time.

If you own other Fjallraven gear, their Passport Wallet will fit right into your kit.

Best for: Professional Travelers

Pioneer Passport Wallet Usage 1

Why We Like It: The use of premium, sturdy materials goes a long way.

What You Should Know: There’s only one place to put your passport.

If durable materials are your thing, look no further than the Pioneer Passport Wallet. In addition to having space for your important travel documents, the nylon shell is extraordinarily tough and can handle whatever journey you have planned next. It also has a DWR coating to shield your sensitive information from the elements.

The interior design is simple, which ensures you can access everything quickly. Both the interior and exterior are minimalistic, which is great for looks, but may leave something to be desired for those who like to bring a ton of gear.

Whereas this is an excellent option for those looking for a passport wallet for just the essentials, if you want the best travel wallet for the whole nine yards, this might not be the right choice for you.

Best for: Relaxed Travelers

Zero Grid Passport Wallet Review

Why We Like It: It can fit a lot of gear for its small footprint.

What You Should Know: The materials aren’t very sturdy for rugged adventures.

At first glance, the Zero Grid Passport Wallet looks a bit cheap. However, what it lacks stylistically, it makes up for in gear storage. On the interior, you can stow your passport on either side, leaving the other for your cards and cash. There’s even an exterior pocket that’s handy for waiting in line at the coffee shop or food truck.

This travel wallet closes with a YKK zipper and utilizes ripstop nylon, which is lightweight and fairly durable. It isn’t the best choice for a rugged adventure, but it’ll hold up well for most use cases.

If the small size doesn’t suit your needs, Zero Grid makes a larger Passport Holder with enough space for an entire family. Plus, the included pen is nearly twice as large; what a deal! This comes in handy for filling out customs forms and writing down directions.

Pacsafe RFIDsafe Compact Travel Organizer Review

Why We Like It: The dedicated change purse is ideal for places where cash rules.

What You Should Know: Although plentiful, the internal organization can be daunting.

Pacsafe is known for its products that deter theft while traveling. Although their Compact Travel Organizer doesn’t have any of the unique locking features as some of their slings we’ve tested, it has RFID-blocking technology and is a capable travel wallet.

The exterior is crafted from recycled polyester and is PFC-free, which is an excellent shout from an environmental standpoint. A small zippered pocket on the exterior works well for change or if you’re waiting in line at a cash-only joint and don’t want to wave bills around beforehand.

This passport wallet is large, but not so large that you’ll feel awkward holding onto it for a few minutes at a restaurant or shop. The interior organization is thoughtful and easy to organize, so you’ll be able to quickly access your gear no matter where you end up.

Away Passport Holder Review

Why We Like It: Unique design doesn’t fold, ensuring no wasted space.

What You Should Know: It can be hard to see the cards inside the wallet.

Most of the travel wallets on this list share one feature—a fold. We’re used to seeing non-folding models in the everyday carry world, but for a passport wallet, it feels wasteful. Enter the Away Passport Holder!

The design ensures easy access to your passport and gear because you don’t need to open a fold before grabbing it. This does heighten the chance that dirt and debris will slide inside and makes it a little harder to see cards in poor light, but once you get used to it, this isn’t an issue.

Best of all, this travel wallet from Away looks professional and feels durable. Plus, if you have larger pockets on your clothing, you may be able to carry it without needing a sling or daypack!

Best for: Frugal Travelers

AmazonBasics RFID Travel Passport Wallet In Essex, England

Why We Like It: There’s enough room for everything in your wallet and then some.

What You Should Know: You’ll need to stow it in a daypack or other large gear.

We know what you’re thinking—an AmazonBasics travel wallet? Stick with us. It might look like the little folder that the check comes in at a restaurant, but the AmazonBasics RFID Travel Passport Wallet can fit you, your partner, and your family’s travel documents in one easy-to-access location.

In addition to holding everyone’s passports, you will be able to stow cards, cash, and other gear inside. The exterior has a loop to secure it inside your pack for extra peace of mind. The design is thoughtfully crafted, so you know where all your important documents are at all times.

Best of all, it comes at a budget-friendly price so you can spend more on wontons, not a travel wallet.

Zoppen Passport Holder

Why We Like It: Clutch-style design looks as comfortable at a restaurant as at the airport.

What You Should Know: Button closure can be finicky.

Most travel wallets we’ve come across have a more masculine style. There are options for those who prefer something different, but they’re not as common. The ZOPPEN Mulit-purpose Rfid Blocking Passport Holder Travel Wallet utilizes a clutch-style design that fits in no matter where you end up.

The exterior is crafted from faux leather that looks professional and holds up well over time. The snap closure can be tricky, especially when not fully packed. There are a ton of fun colorways to choose from, and this travel wallet won’t break the bank, either.

The interior has a soft accent material to ensure your gear stays safe and scratch-free. It unfolds like a pamphlet, so you’ll have enough room for everything you need, from Detroit to Delhi.

Herschel Supply Co. Raynor Passport Holder Showcase

Why We Like It: It has a casual design that feels at home no matter where you end up.

What You Should Know: Sliding your passport in and out isn’t always the quickest.

The Herschel Supply Co. Raynor may be described as a passport holder, but it operates like a travel wallet. It’s crafted from leatherette, or synthetic leather, which is durable but shows cracks over time. These haven’t compromise the material in our experience, though they are noticeable.

The interior has a simple design that can hold a few cards, cash, and a passport. The organization doesn’t try to do or carry too much and ensures you don’t overpack in the process.

However, it’s pretty large for what you can stow inside. It feels more like a standard model than a travel wallet. That might not work for some, but if you want to use something that reminds you of what you’re used to, it will do that perfectly. The model we have on hand has a black-and-white colorway that’s sharp-looking and unique.

Trayvax Explorer Passport Wallet

Why We Like It: American leather looks professional and rugged simultaneously.

What You Should Know: You can’t fit a ton of gear inside for how large it is.

We’ve tested a lot of Trayvax Wallets here at Pack Hacker. Though their minimalist wallets are mostly made of metal, the Explorer Passport Wallet has a unique look all its own. It’s crafted from genuine American leather that looks professional and rugged simultaneously.

The angled corners look almost art-deco and add to this wallet’s stand-out design. It only comes in brown, but we feel that color suits it well.

On the interior, there’s a window so you can see what card you’re sliding out. There isn’t much room for gear here, but there’s enough space for your travel essentials. In addition to offering an excellent passport wallet, Trayvax has a warranty that can be relied on. The warranty spans 65 years and covers any issues with materials or their work from general wear and tear.

Red Wing Shoes Passport Wallet

Why We Like It: A classic look that your grandfather and grandchild can appreciate.

What You Should Know: The fold is rounded, so it takes up a lot of space.

Red Wing has been cranking out comfortable boots since just after the turn of the century, but they make other leather goods worth looking at, too. The Red Wing Shoes Passport Wallet is crafted from durable materials and feels as sturdy as we’d expect from such a reliable brand.

On the interior, the two sides are nearly identical. There are slide pockets for your passport(s), two slots for cards, and a larger pocket perfect for cash. There isn’t a good spot for coins, so you might want to have an alternative place for that or avoid carrying it.

Given the durability of the leather, the crease isn’t very flat, which gives this travel wallet a lot of width. It feels more comfortable in a sling or daypack, but you can throw it in your jacket pocket in a pinch.

Best for: Sustainable Travelers

Fjallraven Kanken Travel Wallet Review

Why We Like It: Has enough space to fit small gear inside, so it functions similar to a clutch bag.

What You Should Know: It’s pretty bulky for the storage space you get.

We’ve tested a lot of Fjallraven gear over the years, a lot of which carries the Kanken name. The Fjallraven Kanken Travel Wallet is perfect for someone who already owns gear from the line or is looking for an ecosystem to invest in.

This passport wallet has lots of internal organization for your travel essentials and everyday gear. There’s an exterior phone pocket to keep everything in one place; however, plus-sized phones and large cases might not fit. When you’re phone is stowed inside, you can see the edges, which isn’t the most flattering look.

There are numerous fun colorways, and the styling perfectly fits into the Kanken line. However, it works well with anything colorful. When not fully packed, the top of the wallet caves in a little. This doesn’t affect usage, but it is noticeable.

CODEOFBELL ANNEX CASE

Why We Like It: Enough room to stow your daily essentials and passport.

What You Should Know: It’s a bit bulky, even for a small pouch.

The CODEOFBELL ANNEX CASE isn’t a passport wallet per say, but it works exceptionally well for folks who want to go the extra mile in gear storage. The exterior has a durable shell with ample water resistance, so your gear inside will stay safe.

You can turn the case into a sling or crossbody bag, so you don’t have to worry about whether or not it will fit into your pocket. Though that makes this thing is large and hefty, you can fit more gear inside than in a traditional travel wallet. It utilizes segmentation, separate zippered compartments, and liner pockets to ensure all your gear has a home.

It has a minimalistic design, but the black colorway might not be what everyone looks for in a pouch.

Moment Crossbody Wallet Review

Why We Like It: A simple wallet for those who prefer the option to wear your essentials.

What You Should Know: It looks more like a purse than a wallet.

The Moment Crossbody Wallet is a mini sling that can be used as a wallet. You can carry it with the included wristlet or use the strap to keep your hands free. The design is more feminine, but the colorway lends itself to most outfits and any gender.

The strap clips don’t feel the most secure, but we haven’t had any issues with them coming undone. There’s enough space to segment your gear on the interior but not enough to drown it in organizational bureaucracy. That said, it can feel a bit tight, so it’s best for storing small gear like a phone or chapstick.

Whether at the airport or on a fancy date, the Moment Crossbody Wallet is the best travel wallet that's up for any occasion and ensures all your gear makes it home safely.

So there you have it! Hopefully, by this point, you’ve chosen a few travel wallets that you can choose from for your next trip. Whether you’re heading to Texas or Tazmania, one of the passport wallets on this list will surely get your gear there safely.

money belt for men travel security belt

If you’re worried about the need to carry high-denomination banknotes on you when you’re traveling, the a Security Belt could be the answer. Combining the belt you’ll probably be taking in any case with a wallet, the basic premise is a belt that incorporates a hidden zipped pocket on its inner side. Made from sturdy black nylon, the belt weighs just four ounces and fits men’s and women’s waists of 26 to 42 inches. The downside to a security belt is that it cannot be used as an everyday wallet since the money is nicely tucked away, and banknotes need to be folded lengthways to fit.

  • Combined belt and money pouch
  • Zip close pocket
  • Sturdy nylon construction
  • Very discreet
  • Cannot be used as an everyday wallet
  • Banknotes must be folded
  • Cannot take credit card/passport
  • Plastic buckle

Is a Security Belt for me?

A further feather in the cap for security when traveling, this Security Belt is a nice way of separating out some emergency cash from your other valuables. Alternatively, it’s a way of minimizing spending and the risk of pickpockets.

Bellroy Leather Travel Wallet

In fact, the Bellroy Leather Travel Wallet has a dedicated passport pocket, as well as another two for banknotes of different currencies, documents, and up to 10 credit cards too! Flipping open like a police notebook rather than a paperback book, there’s a narrow pen has been cleverly added into the center fold. In addition, the Bellroy also includes protection from electronic snooping, with RFID-blocking incorporated!

  • Environmentally certified leather
  • Passport pocket

RFID-protection

There are two sleeves for holding banknotes of various currencies, an identity card or driving license pouch, and slots for an additional seven credit cards. Its lightweight, but is still made from water-resistant nylon. Finally, the Valante travel wallet also includes RFID-blocking technology too!

  • Book opening
  • Smartphone and passport pockets
  • RFID-blocking tech
  • Polyester material
  • Weight of 9.1 oz.
  • Just one color available

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

The best travel wallet for one person isn’t necessarily the best travel wallet for the next person in the queue. So which is the best travel wallet for you? Here are a few points to take note of when working out which of our top picks might be the best for you.

Most of the travel wallets in our review list are made from water-resistant synthetic materials, which are ideal for anyone worried about getting caught in the rain (or even ruined by a splash of spilt coffee). But we’ve also covered a few travel wallets made in faux or real leather, for that extra look of sophistication!

Do you want your travel wallet to contain RFID-protection ? Firstly, let’s explain exactly what RFID stands for: Radio-Frequency Identification Devices. Basically, the wallets that promise RFID-protection stop electronic pickpockets from stealing your data by scanning the data stored on credit cards, identity cards, and even in passports, which could then be used to spend, spend, spend, or even duplicate your identity. You have been warned!

Frequency of use

If you’re only going to use your travel wallet once or twice a year, you’re probably going to be looking for a travel wallet at the lower end of the price bracket. However, if you’re a regular traveler, you definitely do get what you pay for, so keep this in mind when working out how to choose the best travel wallet for you!

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

What makes a travel wallet so different?

Travel wallets need to be more durable and offer more organisation than normal wallets. In the best case, they’re also made from cut-proof material.

The 6 Best RFID Wallets We Tested for Security and Style

Keep your personal info protected with these editor-approved wallets.

RFID—or radio frequency identification—theft is a rare occurrence, but it does happen in high-traffic areas. RFID-blocking technology is essentially a fabric material that blocks scanners from transmitting nefarious frequencies through your wallet to your cards. Some wallets are covered with this material, whereas others have it integrated into one interior pocket.

Of course, there’s a DIY hack to make your own RFID wallet: wrapping your cards in aluminum foil. Aluminum blocks radio frequencies and keeps scanners from mining any information. While effective as a short-term solution, aluminum creases and tears and so it needs frequent replacement. Not to mention, you may not want to feel as if you’re unwrapping last night’s leftovers every time you make a purchase.

The best RFID wallets we recommend are a small investment that can help prevent a big headache, particularly when you’re far from home and the last thing you want to deal with is having your credit card frozen.

What to Consider

  • Best Overall: The Ridge Minimalist RFID Wallet
  • Easiest Access: Ekster Parliament RFID Wallet
  • Most Storage: Carhartt Trifold RFID Wallet
  • Best Air Tag Wallet: Typecase Carbon Fiber RFID Wallet
  • Best Magnetic Closure: Bellroy Apex Slim RFID Wallet

RFID wallets don’t just come in metal or techie synthetics—the blocking technology can be built into leather, nylon ripstop, and other fabrics, so you can find a wallet to fit your style. Wallets made from leather and fabrics have card slots that stretch over time and make it easier to get your cards out, but also may result in accidentally pulling all of your cards out when you’re just trying to reach for one.

Metal options are great because they maintain their grip on your cards over time and stand up to daily wear and tear. The tradeoff is they typically have limited storage space with only one or two slots for storage. If you want an RFID wallet with good organization, look for RFID wallets with additional pockets to keep cards, receipts, membership cards, and IDs separate. There are also synthetic-like nylon ripstop RFID wallets that maintain their shape longer than leather, but their ultra-casual look may not suit all tastes.

The capacity of your RFID wallet should match what you want to carry daily. Some people like to keep it super slim to hold in their front pocket and therefore can do without carrying cash or excess cards. If you want space for extra bills opt for a cash-carrying option like a money clip or bi-fold.

If you carrying multiple cards, three slots probably won’t cover your needs. Look for a wallet that has more card slots and consider one that won’t stretch over time due to overstuffing. The Ridge wallet , however, has one slot that’s expandable that you can adjust to your needs.

How We Selected

In order to narrow down the huge pool of RFID wallets, we considered what’s in our own pockets and thought about what you need for daily carry. We sifted through products with styles ranging from tactical to traditional as well as contemporary options with unique designs and features. We called in a couple of styles to test ourselves and asked colleagues at Best Products about their own experience with RFID wallets. We carried each around for a couple of weeks, assessing each wallets’ quality of construction, functionality, and durability. We also judged RFID wallets based on aesthetics and how comfortable they were to carry. For the RFID wallets we didn’t have a chance to test, we rigorously vetted specs and checked customer reviews to ensure our picks met our standards for quality and performance.

The Ridge Minimalist Slim RFID Wallet

Minimalist Slim RFID Wallet

This sleek RFID wallet is made from aerospace aluminum and has an expandable slot to hold up to 12 cards plus cash. It’s minimalist without being limiting, and the slot doesn’t stretch over time like leather or fabric wallets can, so you know your cards will stay secure.

The elastic cash strap on one side and money clip on the other give you ample space for bills and anything else you want easily accessible. Its slim design lets you carry it in your front pocket and the aluminum material is scratch-resistant so it’ll hold up to daily wear and tear.

Carhartt Trifold RFID-Blocking Wallet

Trifold RFID-Blocking Wallet

This trifold wallet is made of full-grain leather that’s super durable and will develop a nice patina over time. It also has triple-stitch construction which bolsters durability

There’s plenty of storage on the inside: three card slots on each side, a dedicated ID window, and a classic billfold pocket. Many RFID wallets are on the slimmer side but this one has enough storage for those that don’t want to pare down what they carry.

typecase Carbon Fiber RFID-Blocking Wallet

Carbon Fiber RFID-Blocking Wallet

This versatile RFID wallet has an ultra-slim silhouette while still being a classic trifold style. The carbon fiber construction makes it extremely lightweight and durable.

The interior has an ID window and two separate card slots, one of which has a trigger to pop your cards out easily. It also has a billfold pocket so you don’t have to cut down on carrying cash. The stand out feature is the integrated pocket for an Apple AirTag . That way you’re never wondering where you left your wallet again.

Bellroy Apex Slim RFID-Blocking Wallet

Apex Slim RFID-Blocking Wallet

This sleek RFID wallet is my personal favorite because it’s simple, stylish, and functional. The contrasting leather interior is a nice touch and it has two card slots and two pockets which holds everything I need.

The interior card slot on the right has a pull tab for easy access to my cards and the pockets hold enough folded bills. The magnetic closure ensures my wallet stays securely shut and prevents me from overstuffing it— a plus in my mind.

Another highlight is the wallet’s rounded edges—it smoothly slips in and out of my pocket. I carry it in my back pocket but it fits comfortably in a front pocket as well.

Ekster Parliament RFID-Blocking Wallet

Parliament RFID-Blocking Wallet

The leather Parliament RFID wallet has a more traditional look using leather but adds a modern twist with its trigger at the bottom. One push and your cards fan up and out so you don’t need to dig into a tight card slot.

The trigger mechanism works well but you can’t load the card slot with 12 cards as the manufacturer claims. If you do, the trigger isn’t as effective and doesn’t push all the cards out. We found that you can keep around five cards inside, which is all I (and likely most people) really need.

There’s an elastic cash strap on the inside for a couple of bills, though keep in mind it won’t hold much more than that.

Trayvax Original 2.0 Slim Metal Wallet

Original 2.0 Slim Metal Wallet

Gearheads and everyday carry enthusiasts will appreciate the design and functionality of this aluminum RFID wallet. It has a money clip for cash, an integrated bottle-opener and pry bar, and can hold up to ten cards.

The paracord lanyard makes it easier to pull out of your pocket and an I.D. window lets you access your license or frequently used cards you need to tap. Note that in order to utilize the RFID protection, make sure the chips of your cards are not showing through the I.D. window.

The aluminum and stainless steel composition makes this wallet super durable and multiple user reviews say the wallet holds up after several years, though the paracord lanyard may fray after some time.

The 12 best smart wallets in 2024

electronic travel wallet

Even though Apple Wallet and Google Wallet are becoming the rage, they haven't yet completely eliminated the need to carry a physical wallet. Sure, these technologies are great at handling payment and loyalty cards , but digital IDs are still in the very early stages , and it will likely be years before you can leave your driver's license at home. As such, it's still a great idea to carry a physical wallet. And if you're doing that, you may as well make sure it's one of the best smart wallets out there.

Fortunately, physical wallets have gotten much smarter than the simple billfolds of yesteryear. At the very least, modern smart wallets ensure that your contactless payment cards are securely held and shielded against digital pickpocketing, where thieves can surreptitiously scan and copy your credit card just by bumping up against you on a crowded street or transit terminal.

However, many smart wallets take that a step further, with support for tracking technologies that help you find your wallet in the event that it's lost or misplaced. Some of these offer their own trackers, while others are simply designed with a spot for you to insert your own trackers, such as an Apple AirTag or Tile Slim . Whether you're simply looking for a way to protect your credit cards or you want to track your wallet down in an emergency, here are the best smart wallets you can buy in 2024.

Ekster Parliament Wallet

  • Quick card access mechanism
  • RFID blocking technology
  • Option to add a tracker card
  • Premium leather
  • Not the cheapest option

Ekster's Parliament Wallet is a classic choice for environment-conscious shoppers. Made from premium environmentally certified leather from LWG gold-rated tanneries, it comes in a choice of 10 colors and boasts RFID-blocking technology to keep your cards safe.

The built-in aluminum cardholder holds up to 12 cards and has a quick-access mechanism that fans out your cards at the touch of a button. There's also the option to add a Chipolo tracker card for an additional $35. The tracker card has a 200-foot range, and a full charge lasts up to three months. It's compatible with Google Assistant, Alexa, and Siri, and it works with all phones running iOS 11 or Android 5 and above. The only bad thing about this wallet? It's pretty expensive.

Nomad Card Wallet Plus

  • Genuine Horween leather
  • Compatible with AirTag and Chipolo trackers
  • Hold up to 16 cards
  • Quick access card slot
  • No RFID shielding

If you're looking for a more luxurious smart wallet, Nomad's Card Wallet Plus is worth a look. While it doesn't offer RFID shielding to protect your cards, it's designed to let you easily add an AirTag or Chipolo tracking module so you can help recover it in the event that it's lost or misplaced or simply get a reminder if you've forgotten it when you head out the door.

Of course, genuine Horween leather doesn't come cheap, and on its own, the Nomad Card Wallet Plus doesn't include any tracking capabilities. To get those, you'll have to add $35 for a Chipolo Card Spot or $20 for an insert to hold your own AirTag. Still, with room for up to 16 cards — or 14 cards with a bit of cash — plus an external quick access card slot, it's pretty versatile. The Nomad Card Wallet Plus is available in black or rustic brown, and the leather is designed to develop a rugged patina over time for a more unique look.

Smart Buy Apple AirTag Wallet

  • Built-in AirTag case
  • RFID blocking
  • Slim design
  • Holds only 5 cards

If you own an iPhone, chances are you're already using Apple Wallet to hold most of your cards — and if you're not, you really should be . This is where The Smart Buy's minimalist Apple AirTag Wallet comes in; it's a slim wallet that holds only five cards, but that's more than enough to handle a driver's license and one or two backup payment cards with enough room to spare for a bit of cash.

What's unique about this for Apple fans is that it has a built-in holder for an AirTag , so you won't have to worry about losing it or misplacing it. Whether you left it at the gym or office or you're just trying to figure out where you set it down in your house, having an AirTag strapped to your wallet can be invaluable. There's also RFID-blocking technology to protect your cards, and it's available in brown, black carbon fiber, and blue.

Dango D03 Dapper Bifold EDC Wallet

  • The best smart wallet currently available
  • Holds up to 14 cards plus cash and ID
  • Money strap holder isn't particularly durable

If you’re looking for the best wallet that U.S.-based tech can offer, check out the Dango D03 RFID Wallet. Constructed with 6061 aerospace aluminum, assembled with water-resistant DTEX components, and fastened with mil-spec bolts, the D03’s aluminum chassis is anodized for a tough-coated finish. It works on a rail system with a bifold three-pocket design that holds up to 14 cards and an ID window in an inner pocket. An integrated elastic band carries additional cash and cards and keeps the wallet closed. RFID-blocking technology keeps your data secure and safe. Customer support representatives are on hand to address any potential issues over time.

  • Holds up to eight cards plus cash
  • Choice of genuine or vegan leather
  • Not the most durable-quality leather

The Serman Brands bifold card holder — trim and compact at 3.9 by 2.85 by 0.5 inches — has a front pocket made for your most frequently used card. Two pockets on the inside, with a photo ID slot and a money clip, hold your cash. It fits between six and eight cards plus bills with a minimal pull-tab design to reduce bulk. The wallet case also has a smart pull strap for quick access to your most-used cards. It’s made from the finest leather or vegan leather for both the front and inner lining to make a smart and stylish case that absorbs the natural oils of your hands and allows the wallet to develop a rich and dark color.

The cardholder provides advanced RFID secure technology, a unique metal composite, engineered specifically to block 13.56 MHz or higher RFID signals and protect the valuable information stored on RFID chips from unauthorized scans.

Runbox Slim Leather Wallet

  • Wide choice of colors
  • May not close fully with lots of cards plus cash

The slim wallet is ideal for carrying business cards, credit and debit cards, and cash, keeping everything safe and organized. Made of soft and comfortable carbon leather and a leather lining, it’s stitched with precision. Secrid Mini Wallet

  • Slide mechanism for easy card access
  • Wide range of color and material combinations
  • Holds up to 12 cards plus cash
  • RFID blocking compartment
  • Bills must be folded to fit

A slim, practical design, premium leather construction, an RFID-blocking compartment, and an inventive card sliding mechanism come together to make the Secrid Mini Wallet one of the most attractive smart wallets on the market. It offers the Mini Wallet in over 80 color and material combinations in both genuine leather and vegan variations. The Mini Wallet is a true minimalist wallet, comfortably housing up to six credit or debit cards in the secure compartment and another six in the accompanying pockets. Opening the wallet completely reveals a tab that holds bills, although only around five to eight.

What really sets Secrid wallets apart is its patented slide mechanism that allows you to fan out all the cards in the protected compartment with one pull of the bottom handle to make card access a breeze.

Travando Slim Wallet

  • Holds up to 11 cards
  • Integrated money clip
  • Money clip is too tight

The Travando Men’s Slim Wallet offers an attractive blend of minimalist wallet features at an affordable price. This RFID-blocking vegan wallet checks a lot of the boxes for wallet shoppers, including an integrated money clip, room for 11 credit or debit cards, an easy-access front pocket, and a clear window to display your ID inside. Its RFID blocking design protects against the 13.56 Mhz band used by RFID scanners, making it secure without sacrificing design. This wallet is available in nine color combinations — the most popular of which is the carbon fiber variation — and comes in a gift box that makes it a solid choice if you’re shopping for a present.

Vaultskin Chelsea Slim Minimalist Leather Wallet

  • Holds up to 10 cards
  • Made from top-grain Italian leather
  • Smart strap for quick card access
  • Leather may stretch, making card slots loose

The slim wallet is ideal for carrying business cards, credit and debit cards, driver’s licenses, or other IDs. It’s constructed with soft, durable, top-grain Italian leather for a sophisticated feel and look. The 13.56 MHz RFID protector prevents electronic pickpocketing as your credit cards are protected from RFID theft. The three pockets include space for up to 10 cards in the front, an inner RFID-protected pocket, and a back pocket. A thin smart strap, which automatically retracts back into position when released, allows quick access to your cards. This wallet comes in a choice of 10 colors.

Himi Genuine Leather Wallet for Men

  • A bit roomier than some other wallets
  • Window for ID
  • Not the most durable wallet

Its compact design features two windows for ID and other cards, allowing quick access when traveling, at the store, or at the office. A total of 10 card slots let you carry all your favorite cards, plus cash. Advanced RFID tech is constructed with a metal composite that blocks 13.56 MHz or higher RFID signals to protect your private information from rogue scans.

The Himi Wallet is a bit roomier than many minimal wallets and better suited for those who want to carry a few more cards and cash than a minimal wallet can accommodate. Despite the features and functionality, the Himi Wallet is one of the more affordable wallets out there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you like to have your ID easily visible in a clear window? Do you carry a lot of cash? Are you more of a minimalist, or do you want to carry everything? These are some of the most important questions to ask yourself when shopping for a smart wallet.

A good exercise you can do right now is to remove the entire contents of your wallet and lay all of it out on a table. How many of these items are essential to carry around? Some banks now support cardless NFC ATM access, meaning you no longer need to carry a debit card to get in the door, access the ATM, and withdraw cash. Some credit cards you may use for recurring or online purchases don’t need to be on your person at all times. How many of your cards can you move to your phone’s digital wallet and never miss them? Figuring these things out will let you significantly slim down your wallet and potentially choose a convenient option.

Another consideration might be your work ID. Perhaps you don’t want every card slot in your wallet to be RFID blocked, so you can keep your work badge in your wallet and still unlock the doors in your building, for example. A wallet should be durable, compact, and capable of storing all of the cards, bills, and IDs you need every day. Styles include bifold, trifold, slim, and travel wallets, though some of these categories can be combined.

Many smart wallets are grouped with technology- and electronics-related products, so sales events like Cyber Monday can be a good time to score a deal on a smart wallet. Beyond sales events, you can use an Amazon price tracking extension like Keepa if you want to set price thresholds and get notifications when those prices are available. Keepa also lets you see the price history of an item on Amazon, so you know if the deal you are getting is a good deal or if you should hold out for another price drop or product.

The best wallets are made of leather, faux leather, or aluminum and carbon fiber. High-quality wallets have leather liners for card and money pockets. Make sure to take stock of your credit and debit cards before you make your purchase. An RFID blocking wallet prevents thieves from using an RFID scanner to collect financial and personal information. Read the specific details about the RFID blocking capabilities of smart wallets you’re considering, because many can only block a specific number of card slots on a given wallet. Figure out how many cards you have where RFID blocking is important first, then do your research.

In this traveler’s guide, we’ll walk you through the world of digital wallets (and digital cards) – like what is a digital wallet and how does it work. Don’t worry if you’re not tech-savvy; we’ll keep things easy to understand, so you can make the most of this modern travel companion.

What Is a Digital Wallet?

In the context of modern travel, a digital wallet can make your journeys smoother and more convenient. But what are digital wallets?

Think of a digital wallet as a secure, electronic version of the traditional leather wallet you carry in your pocket or purse. But instead of being filled with physical bank cards, cash, coins, and receipts . . . Digital wallets live on your smartphone or mobile device and keep payment info, passwords, and more so you don’t need to shop with your physical bank cards. You can add your credit card, debit card, or bank details and use your device for easy payments. It’s like having a virtual vault in your pocket that securely stores digital files.

Digital wallets help you easily keep your travel essentials (and your day-to-day essentials) at your fingertips, neatly organized in one place.

Digital wallets can also store:

  • Membership cards
  • Loyalty cards
  • Event tickets
  • Plane and transit tickets
  • Hotel reservations
  • Driver’s licenses
  • Identification cards

How a Digital Wallet Works

Now that we have a clear picture of what a digital wallet is and what it can do, let’s figure out how to use digital wallets and how it all works. Don’t worry; we’ll keep it simple and easy to understand.

The current technologies used by mobile devices and digital wallet, include:

  • NFC (Near Field Communication): Many smartphones are equipped with NFC technology, which allows them to communicate wirelessly with point-of-sale terminals, ticket scanners, and other devices. When you tap your phone near an NFC-enabled reader, it securely transmits the information needed for a transaction.
  • QR Codes: Some digital wallets use QR codes, those square barcodes you’ve probably seen before. You scan these codes with your phone’s camera to complete transactions or access information.
  • Encryption: Security is a top priority for digital wallets. They use powerful encryption technology to protect your data.
  • Biometric Verification: Your smartphone’s biometric features, like fingerprints recognition or facial recognition, add an extra layer of security. This means only you can access your digital wallet’s contents.

Let’s break it down a bit more. When you use your digital wallet to pay for something, for instance, here’s what happens:

  • Choose Your Card: You select the card you want to use for your purchase, whether it’s a credit card, debit card, or a digital version of your loyalty card.
  • Authentication: Your digital wallet verifies your identity, often using a fingerprint or facial recognition. This step ensures that you’re the rightful owner.
  • Transaction Time: When you’re ready to pay or present a digital ticket, your smartphone communicates with the payment terminal using NFC or QR codes.
  • Secure Transmission: Your payment information is sent securely, just like a secret code. It’s unreadable to anyone trying to intercept it.
  • Approval: The transaction is completed, and you’ll often get a confirmation on your screen. It’s just like handing over cash, but it’s all digital.

That’s it! Your digital wallet handles the technical stuff behind the scenes so you can focus on enjoying your travel experiences. It’s all about simplicity, security, and making your journeys more delightful.

Now, let’s explore the different types of digital wallets you can choose from for your travels.

what is a digital wallet and how does it work

Types of Digital Wallets

When it comes to digital wallet apps, you’ve got choices – just like picking the perfect destination for your next adventure. Here are some of the most well-known types of digital wallets:

  • Google Wallet
  • Samsung Pay
  • Walmart Pay
  • Vodafone M-PESA

These are widely considered the best digital wallet apps.

While they each come with their own unique features, they all serve the same purpose: making your travel easier and more enjoyable. You can choose the one that suits your needs and preferences best, just like you would choose the right travel gear for your journey.

How to Pick a Digital Wallet

Choosing the right digital wallet for your travels is a bit like selecting the perfect destination. Let’s make it simple and easy to decide.

Here are some key factors to consider:

  • Compatibility: Make sure the digital wallet works with your smartphone, as not all are available on every type of device. Check if it’s compatible with your phone’s operating system, like Android or iOS.
  • Accepted Everywhere: Look for a digital wallet that’s widely accepted, especially in the places you plan to visit. Popular ones like Apple Pay and Google Wallet are often good choices.
  • Security: Your safety matters. Pick a wallet that offers robust security features, like biometric authentication, encryption, and the ability to remotely lock your wallet if it’s lost.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , our tech and travel experts are always on the lookout for the best gadgets to keep your stuff safe, including luggage trackers , smart luggage and key finders . When picking the best smart wallets, our pros researched top-rated models on the market and picked models that were both durable and stylish as well as evaluated them on any additional features.

After checking out our picks, learn more about how we chose the best smart wallets on the market and tips to keep in mind when shopping for one to feel safer with your money.

We love the sleek, super slim design of this genuine leather wallet, which is offered in six shades such as black, brown, burgundy and more. But just because the design looks minimalist, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice space. According to the brand, you can store more than 10 cards inside the wallet and four to six within the card slider system. There’s even a handy strap to keep your cash secure.

There’s a built-in trigger to make releasing cards easy . In addition to RFID blocking, our pros like that this feature-rich wallet also contains a built-in pocket where you can store a slim tracker like the Ekster Tracker Card so you can locate your wallet via Bluetooth should you lose it. Elkster also makes an AirTag version of this wallet that has a spot that will perfectly house Apple’s tracker, so you don’t have to worry about it falling out.

This smart wallet from Buffway is perfect for everyday use. Not only is it offered in all the colors you could ever want, but it’s made from PU leather and comes at an extremely affordable price. Our pros like that it’s slim while still offering enough storage for several credit cards and that it features RFID blocking technology. Unlike other smart wallets, it also contains a built-in ID window so you don’t have to struggle to pull out your license. There’s also a handy cutout in the front to make removing your most used card from its slot a breeze.

If you happen to like using Apple AirTags to track your keys, luggage and other often-forgotten items, this might be the wallet for you. I t has not one but two pockets to perfectly fit an AirTag. One can be seen from the exterior and the other is a discrete interior flap so it goes unseen — use whichever you prefer to stow the AirTag.

The sleek cowhide leather wallet available in multiple colors also has two bill compartments, six horizontal credit card slots, two vertical pockets and an ID window with thumb slot, though some users report the stitching from the tracker slot blocks part of the bill compartment. Like other smart wallets, there’s also an RFID blocking layer to keep your personal data safe.

Secrid Mini Wallet

Mini Wallet

A more condensed wallet makes it easier to fit in a pocket or teeny tiny purse. This one from Secrid also has the bonus of balancing a small size with sensibility, featuring an RFID-blocking compartment. It’s quite small but packs a lot inside with an inventive card sliding mechanism that allows you to fan out all the cards while protecting them from sliding out. That means you can have six “protected” cards in addition to two “open” slots that can hold up to four cards. That, coupled with plenty of color options and vegan leather options, makes it a supreme choice.

The Ridge Minimalist Slim Wallet

Minimalist Slim Wallet

Made from high-quality materials, this smart wallet is built to last and even comes with a lifetime guarantee back it up. Along with RFID blocking, its slim design has room for up to 12 cards and there’s a notch to easily push them out when it’s time to pay. We like that you have the choice between an integrated cash strap to hold bills or a money clip. There are also tons of wallet patterns and designs on the website making this a great gift, as well as accessories like a key holder or a smart wallet kit that features an attachable case for your wallet’s AirTag.

Travando Slim Wallet

Slim Wallet

While this smart wallet may not be made of real leather, it’s still chic and a great value — hence why it's an Amazon best-seller. It offers multiple card slots and RFID blocking and it even comes in gift packaging so it’s an easy present for special occasions and holidays. We like that there’s an ID window and easy storage for bills with an integrated money clip. It may not be the most minimalist pick on this list, but it’s a great choice for anyone who wants enough space to store their items without added bulk. If you like to use an AirTag to track your stuff, you can upgrade to the brand's AirTag wallet that has a built-in pocket for it.

Vaultskin Chelsea Card Holder

Chelsea Card Holder

This smart wallet is made of soft Italian leather that will feel great to the touch. Our pros like that it’s a simple yet sophisticated design featuring a self-retracting pull-up strap to make removing secured cards easy. Like other smart wallets, it features RFID blocking and is a great pick for anyone who mainly carries credit cards, IDs and cash. We also like that there are card and cash storage options both on top of the wallet and on the sides making access convenient.

Dango D01 Dapper Wallet

D01 Dapper Wallet

This smart wallet stands out for its futuristic and lightweight design. We love that it’s super compact and will fit right in the palm of your hand yet can store up to 12 credit cards. There’s a push notch to help you access your cards and a silicone band that wraps around the wallet to store any loose cash. Though we wish there was dedicated storage for trackers and coins, this RFID-blocking wallet is a great versatile pick for anyone who likes to keep their wallet down to the essentials.

Bellroy Hide and Seek

Hide and Seek

This leather smart wallet from Bellroy is perfect for international and professional travelers who like to have cash on hand. Offered in two heights, the wallet can help keep crisp bills of all sizes flat and secure, in addition to multiple credit cards. Though it features RFID blocking, what we like most is that there’s a hidden pouch that can be used for storing coins or even an AirTag. Plus, there's an additional protected section that’s ideal for keeping business cards or personal photos unharmed.

Serman Brands RFID Blocking Slim Bifold Wallet

RFID Blocking Slim Bifold Wallet

This bifold wallet has a slot for your ID, a money clip for cash and even a smart pull strap to make it easier to access three or four extra cards inside your wallet. On top of RFID blocking, we like that this pick is slim yet has room for your needs, though it does have slightly less card storage than some other picks on this list. We also like the front slot cutout which lets you quickly access your most used card without having to open up the wallet.

How we chose the best smart wallets

linebreak

While we haven't formally tested smart wallets in the Media & Tech Lab, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s product testing experts and engineers evaluated key criteria to choose the best smart wallets, including performance, durability and style. To make our recommendations, we looked for brands that typically perform well in our evaluations as well as high-quality materials with which our experts have experience, features that would be most useful (like built-in layers) and top consumer reviews. We also chose wallets that had pockets to make them "smarter" by holding trackers to know the location of your waller.

What to look for when shopping for smart wallets

linebreak

✔️ Storage: Consider how many credit cards and IDs you’ll want to carry around in your wallet. Do you typically have lots of cash? While some wallets are excellent for storing multiple credit cards, they may have limited storage space for bills, coins or other items. If you mostly rely on credit cards, consider a smart wallet with a card slider, push system or smart strap to help you access cards easily without having to dig through your wallet.

✔️ Tracker compartment: To make using a tracker easier with your wallet, look for ones that have pockets that will securely hold an AirTag or TileMate tracker. This can be done with a built-in or hidden layer inside that will make sure the tracker doesn't fall out easily.

✔️ Materials: Smart wallets are frequently made from leather, faux leather (PU leather) or other metal materials such as aluminum or titanium. If you’re looking for a luxuriously soft feel that will age well over time, consider investing in a genuine leather wallet. If you like the feel of leather but would prefer a great value wallet, you can find one made of faux leather for a great price, just keep in mind that it may not be as durable. If durability is important, choose a wallet made from aluminum, which is also lightweight.

✔️ Style : Smart wallets come in various styles. Do you prefer a minimalist smart wallet where all your items are accessible from the wallet's exterior or do you prefer one that’s bifold and opens up to reveal credit cards and cash? Also, keep in mind that some smart wallets offer significantly more colors or patterns (and even accessories) to choose from so always be sure to check the brand's website.

What is a smart wallet?

linebreak

“There are varying levels of what constitutes as 'smart,'” says the Good Housekeeping Institute's Chief Technologist Rachel Rothman . “For traditional smart home products , it usually means the device is connected.” But when it comes to smart wallets, these features usually refer to RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) blocking, which is designed to help prevent thieves from stealing personal information and data from the credit and debit cards stored in your wallet via RFID scanners. Smart wallets also are typically designed with smart storage options for credit cards.

Many smart wallets also feature a built-in layer where you can discreetly store a tracker such as a wallet-friendly Tile Slim tracker or a compact Apple AirTag . These trackers can help you locate your wallet should it get lost or be misplaced by leveraging GPS, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to pinpoint its location.

What is RFID blocking?

double line break

Our credit cards store valuable personal and financial information that is potentially at risk of being stolen by hackers. While the risk of this isn’t high, an RFID-blocking layer can give you an extra feel of security by blocking signals. It does this through a thin layer of carbon fiber or aluminum that’s hidden under the outer material to block the electromagnetic signal emitted from your card. Many wallets now offer this feature, and it can’t hurt to have it as it doesn’t interrupt any other tracker you may use.

Can I put a tracker on my smart wallet?

double line break

While none of the wallets on this list have a built-in tracker (that would require either charging a battery or replacing one over time), many of them do offer the functionality of fitting popular trackers. If you’re worried about misplacing your wallet or having it stolen, pick smart wallets that offer fabric and inner layers designed to conceal tile trackers without risking it falling out. Or you can use a tracker that can fit in a card slot, like the Tile Slim or Elevation Lab TagVault .

Travel wallets are a useful way to keep your passport, cards, and money all in one place. Designed to be compact yet spacious, they’re a handy tool to hold your most valuable items all together and safe from loss, damage, or theft.

Travel Wallet

When you’re heading overseas, your passport and your money are just about the most important items you’ll need to take with you. Making sure these difficult-to-replace possessions are kept safely about your person while you’re away calls for a special kind of purse or wallet that’s both compact and secure.

To add an extra layer of protection to your credit and debit cards, many travel wallets are made using RFID-blocking material. This specially-designed lining prevents the data from your cards from being read or copied by unscrupulous thieves or tech-savvy pickpockets, anywhere in the world.

Of course, you could take your regular wallet with you, but why would you want to when there are so many great travel wallets that can offer you numerous benefits?

Here are some features you should consider before you make your purchase.

When you’re out exploring the world, the last thing you need is to be weighed down. Opt for either a small and straightforward travel wallet that will keep your cards and cash close by, or choose a larger model that can also carry your passport and travel documents while still maintaining a slim, compact profile.

RFID Protection

Modern-day travel wallets are often equipped with RFID-blocking material on the inside. This smart addition helps to protect against electronic pickpocketing and prevents criminals from accessing your data.

You should also consider more traditional safety measures like slash-proof straps and material and superstrong zippers or snaps that will keep your wallet securely fastened.

Material and Durability

A travel wallet is about both form and function. Just because you want it to be extra secure and super compact, it doesn’t mean it can’t look good, too. You can find wallets in a huge variety of designs and materials.

Leather is durable and sophisticated, while plastic is easy to clean and difficult to damage. Nylon composite fabrics are also popular as they’re very lightweight and designed to last.

It’s important to remember the adage “buy cheap, buy twice.” Prevent this by investing in the best quality wallet you can find in your price range.

Organization

While your regular wallet may be crammed full of old receipts, loyalty cards, and other day-to-day nonsense, your travel wallet will only need to hold the bare essentials.

Look for a wallet that has enough slots to hold your credit cards, a flat opening for notes, and a sealed section for coins. If you’re planning on carrying your passport, make sure your wallet is large enough to contain it.

7 reasons you should use a digital wallet while travelling

  • envelope-solid

Whether Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay or PayPal is your digital wallet of choice, this contactless payment method is safer – and more convenient – than your traditional credit card.

While the majority of Australians still make payments using their physical debit and credit cards, digital wallets are on the rise. Data analysed by Juniper Research in 2022 identified trends that predict digital wallets will be used by more than 5.2 billion people across the world by 2026 – that’s more than 60% of the global population. The prediction is unsurprising given how easy and convenient digital wallet payments are, syncing seamlessly across devices for easy use both in-person and online.

What is a digital wallet?

A digital wallet is an electronic app that facilitates contactless payments. This app can be installed on smartphones and similar devices (such as an Apple watch) and allows users to make payments using their device, rather than a physical plastic card. These electronic wallets can store credit and debit cards, tickets, membership, loyalty and healthcare cards. Apple iPhone users know this functionality as Apple Pay, while Google Pay and Samsung Pay are available on Android phones. You can download digital wallets from the App Store for Apple or the Play Store for Android.

payment using google pay

What is the most-used digital wallet in Australia?

Research conducted in 2023 by global data and business intelligence platform Statista found that the most used mobile payment method in Australia was Apple Pay, while WeChat Pay was the least used.

Are digital wallets secure?

Digital wallets provide enhanced security via biometric authentication such as fingerprint or facial recognition which can replace the traditional PIN entry. University of New South Wales also explains those using digital wallets enjoy further security features. For example, digital wallets use a device-specific number and unique transaction code for each purchase and do not share card numbers or CCV numbers with the merchant. Rather, digital wallet transactions utilise a tokenised credit card number that essentially acts as a virtual credit card number that exists alongside your physical card – ensuring your details aren’t shared with anyone. This is beneficial as, if the merchant’s transaction information were to be hacked, your details wouldn’t be compromised. Digital wallets also have age restrictions to prevent children from adding a card to their smartphone. Apple Pay requires users to be older than 13 years, and Google Pay has a minimum age of  16 years.

phone with digital wallet open on screen

Seven reasons you should use a digital wallet while travelling

  • Digital wallets can be used overseas while travelling provided the merchant has contactless payment facilities.
  • Payments made via digital wallets typically require biometric identification such as fingerprint or face identification, a passcode or two-factor authentication, making them more secure.
  • Card information held and used in digital wallets is encrypted, reducing the potential of your personal information being leaked, hacked or illegally obtained.
  • Digital wallets do not store or share your personal card information with the merchant.
  • Depending on your financial institution, if you lose your physical plastic debit or credit card, you may still be able to use the card in your digital wallet.
  • Recent transactions on your card are immediately viewable in your digital wallet.
  • Digital wallet transactions can be made on your phone or smartwatch, reducing the need to carry a wallet or physical cards.

We found travel wallets that are great for navigating old cities around the clock, and travel wallets that can handle all sorts of rugged adventures. We curated all our travel wallets with durability and design in mind, but we also considered features that make each wallet unique in and of its own. The one quality you'll find in each travel wallet? They all are sized to hold an American passport nice and snug. After all, it wouldn't be a travel wallet if it didn't hold your most important papers.

Pioneer's Passport Wallet is wonderfully simple in design and tough as nails thanks to its waterproof ripstop fabric construction. In fact, we found the waterproof ripstop fabric is great for handling humid environments, staying dry and and stiff, as opposed to getting all slimy and flimsy as other travel wallets can become in these climates. As far as stroage goes, it comes with a full length cash pocket, pockets to store up to 8 cards, and a 3D molded passport pocket designed to fit an American passport perfectly snug.

Due to this wallet's construction. look, and function, we found it to be our favorite pick when taking to warm weather vacation and cold weather trips. The material is simply just too good, and you never have to worry about any of the contents sliding out. Simply put, the Pioneer Passport Wallet is capable of all kinds of trips and adventures. This is a quality investment we'd recommend over and over again.

Bellroy makes several great travel wallets, but the wallet we found most like the wallet you probably already carry is the bifold Travel Wallet. It's got a fine all leather make and will hold a passport, cash, train tickets, and up to 10 cards. What's cool is the wallet comes with a micro pen that hangs inside the wallet's spine, which we found to be useful when wanting to write down recommendations of places to visit from friends and other travelers.

Looks can be deceiving due to the wallet's traditional bifold design. It measures 3.8-inches tall by 6-inches wide, so it is big. Overall we find it to be a great minimalist travel wallet with a classic style that blends in nicely in all environments.

This reasonably priced wallet from Fjallraven is made with a durable waxed waterproof canvas and a YKK zippered closure to protect all your documents and cards from the elements. Inside are 5 card pockets, 2 cash pockets, and 1 zippered coin pouch. Looking for the passport pocket? That would be behind the coin pouch—it's a nice and discrete design note, we know.

If you're looking for a rugged wallet with waterproofing and protection but don't want to pay over $100, this is a solid option. Fjallraven fans will see this wallet has the same quality construction like the brand's other gear, which is a great sign because the maker is one of the best valued outdoor brands out there.

The design of a good AirTag wallet is still being perfected, but that doesn't mean we don't like what's already on the market. If you're looking for a travel wallet you can store your AirTag in, this one from Lumberjack Plaid is our latest favorite.

It comes in a sleek and stylish leather (3 colors available) and features a passport pocket, a long pocket for tickets and cash, and 3 card slots. You get all this for $40, which is an excellent value for such a quality wallet. Just be aware the leather can show scratches pretty easily; most notably on the dark leather.

POLARE ORIGINAL RFID Blocking Leather Passport Holder Travel Wallet For Men and Women (Dark Brown)

RFID Blocking Leather Passport Holder Travel Wallet For Men and Women (Dark Brown)

We get it, many of us aren't jet-setting out of the U.S. several times in a year. Nonetheless it's important to have a passport wallet even if you're only getting out of the country once in a blue moon. For overseas trips that are few and far between, this RFID-blocking leather travel passport case for under $30 on Amazon will do the job. It will also give off style points, as the leather has a nice rich look to it that holds up well when used sparingly.

Due to the stitching and overall quality of the materials we'd say this wallet might not be suitable for high levels of use. But because it carries a high durability and functionality for the price, we recommend it as a great travel wallet for those who might need to take a passport with them only once or twice in a year.

Alpha Keeper Money Belt for Travel Passport Holder

Money Belt for Travel Passport Holder

If you want to go with a more secure wallet, this thin travel pouch can be strapped around the waist and hold your passport, cash, cards, and more. The pouch itself has RFID tech built-in so you get another level of safety. Plus the pouch is made from water-resistant ripstop, so you won't have to worry about any of your items getting soaked from rain.

One note to point out is even though the price point of this belt is incredibly good, we believe the thin fabric could wear down faster over time than some of the other wallets on this list.

Bellroy Apex Passport Cover

Apex Passport Cover

The Apex wallet is made with fine leather that's heat bonded instead of being stitched. The result is a unique design that, when closed, fully encases the inner contents of the wallet from the outside elements. The Apex will hold a passport, cash, and 2-4 cards. And just like the Travel Wallet, you get a small micro pen that can be stored inside on the wallet's spine.

Shinola Utility Passport Wallet

Utility Passport Wallet

Handcrafted from USA heritage leather, Shinola's Utility Passport Wallet is truly made to age like fine wine. When opening up the wallet, one side contains a passport pocket while the other has 5 faille-lined pockets for your cards. It's not the most feature-loaded travel wallet on this list, and it's certainly not the cheapest, but if you're looking for something simple and timeless then this is the one.

Tecovas Alligator Passport Case

Alligator Passport Case

You're not going to find another travel wallet like this one, and that's the point. Texas boot-maker Tecovas went and took the same authentic American alligator leather it uses for its boots and crafted the material into a passport case. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece with a passport pocket and 4 exterior card pockets. What's cool is you can even monogram it.

Of course the price point on this wallet is almost like buying a luxury good, but really the only qualm we have with the wallet is its availability. Sometimes it's popularity gets the best of it, and so you might have to turn to the Ostrich Passport Case or the original Passport Case —two excellent alternatives, no less.

Malbon Golf Yacht Club Passport Holder

Yacht Club Passport Holder

The streetwear-inspired golf brand Malbon Golf has been turning out tons of cool pieces this year. One of its products that has flown under-the-radar is this pebbled leather passport holder. We were surprised to open it up and see tons of card space to go with the passport pocket. And as far as style goes, it comes with cool embossments on the front and inner pocket and is available in three colors.

Tanner Goods Leather Passport Travel Wallet

Leather Passport Travel Wallet

If you liked the full leather of the Shinola travel wallet but wished it had a different interior configuration, then this travel wallet from Tanner Goods is a great alternative. Inside is a passport pocket with a small card pocket on top of the passport flap, plus two additional card slots on the other side.

The wallet might not hold a lot, but if you want a minimalist leather wallet with great style and a thin silhouette, then you'll be happy with this choice.

Zero Grid Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Similar to the belted travel wallet we featured earlier, this passport holder can be used as a sling bag and is made with waterproof ripstop and covered with RFID blocking material. What's cool is it zips shut, closing in the passport and up to 10 cards that can fit on the inside. You also get a small stylus that you can hang on the wallet's spine.

What to Consider Before Buying a Travel Wallet

line

Buying a quality travel wallet is going to look a lot like buying your everyday wallet, but the two are not the same. Here's what you need to know.

  • Durability: Making sure your travel wallet is tough and made of good materials is of utmost importance. After all, this is your last line of defense to your passport—the most important document you need when traveling overseas. This prior notion is why we loved reviewing travel wallets made from tear-resistant and water-resistant materials (like the Pioneer Travel Wallet). Premium leather is also a good material to protect your passport, as the leather provides a thick layer to keep moisture and dust from getting to your papers.
  • Security Features: Some travel wallets comes with RFID (radio-frequency identification) lining to help prevent RFID theft. It's true this type of crime doesn't happen a lot, but it is possible, and so buying a travel wallet with RFID lining does add a level of security to your essentials. Another security feature to look for are zippered or snap closures that help keep your passport and cards sealed off. We like these closures because it helps limit the chances of any items accidentally falling out when traveling—which happens more than one might think.
  • AirTag Tracking: Although we only have one AirTag travel wallet we like right now, we anticipate more of these types of wallets to hit the market in the coming year. AirTag wallets have become a huge hit thanks to their tracking abilities, and so any travel wallet that can incorporate an AirTag in a slimming and discrete way should be considered on your shortlist of what travel wallets to buy.

Can You Use a Passport Covers as A Wallet?

commerce breaker

Travel wallets, also sometimes referred to as passport wallets, are the best possible choice for carrying your passport and your cash and cards. Travel wallets are not to be confused with passport covers, which are simply covers you can slide over your passport to add a level of protection.

Passport covers do theoretically have space where you could slide some cash plus 1-2 cards inside, but those spaces oftentimes make your valuables prone to falling out. A passport cover is not designed to hold anything more than a passport, and so whatever else you put in there is going to be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Stick to a travel wallets for cash, card, and passport carry.

Why Trust Us

commerce breaker

In order to keep up with new new designs and releases, the MH tech and gear team is continually testing all of the latest everyday carry accessories to make sure our recommendations reflect the top products within each space.

When it comes to travel wallets, we acquire and call in the latest releases to test, and then we take them out into the real world. At any given point, writers and editors in our office are traveling, and so we plan accordingly whenever we are going to be up in the air to take one or two travel wallets with us to see how they perform. Lastly, we take a hands-on look at the travel wallets up close. We inspect everything from the material to the build of the wallet to determine it's durability and whether or not the price point reflects the overall quality.

How We Selected

line

Our MH commerce team thoroughly researched and tested dozens of the best travel wallets, from budget to designer to premium, gift-worthy models. We noted everything from how snug the wallet fit an American passport to how the interior card slots were organized. We also considered fabric quality (especially when it came to leather) and price. The list above represents our honest picks for the best travel wallets of 2023.

Contactless payment methods have been gaining popularity among both merchants and consumers, especially amid the pandemic. Digital wallets are one such method. They store your payment options, such as credit and debit cards, allowing you to conveniently use your smartphone or smartwatch to make a purchase.

Credit and debit cards aren’t the only things you can keep in a digital wallet , though. You can also store gift cards, membership and loyalty cards, coupons, event tickets, plane tickets and more. Plus, you can use many digital wallets to transfer money to other people.

How digital wallets work

Different digital wallets use different technologies to process payments:

Near Field Communication, or NFC: This allows two devices to exchange information if they’re placed close to each other. Apple Pay and Google Pay use this technology. To use one of these digital wallets, the merchant must have compatible card readers at checkout.

Magnetic Secure Transmission, or MST: This generates a magnetic signal, much like when you swipe the magnetic stripe on a credit card. The signal is transmitted to the payment terminal’s card reader. Samsung Pay uses both MST and NFC technology.

QR codes: These are barcodes you can scan with your smartphone’s camera. In the PayPal app , for example, you can generate a QR code that lets you use your account to pay for an item in a store.

While the digital wallet examples above can be used at any merchant that accepts them, there are also “closed” digital wallets, like the Starbucks app, that are designed to be used only at a specific store.

» MORE: Will using a digital wallet cost you in credit card rewards?

How to pick a digital wallet

Major digital wallets like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay are dependent on the phone you carry. You can’t use Apple Pay on an Android phone, for example. So by sticking to a specific brand of phone, you’ve also chosen a potential digital wallet. PayPal is an exception because the app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Your use of a digital wallet may also be limited by where you shop. Not all merchants accept digital wallets yet, so you’ll still need to carry a credit or debit card as a backup payment method.

» MORE: More credit cards pile on rewards for mobile wallet spending

Are digital wallets safe?

New technology always gives consumers pause, especially any technology involving sensitive banking and credit card information. However, digital wallets have a built-in security feature — a process called “tokenization” — that keeps your credit or debit card number a secret when you make a purchase.

Essentially, when you pay for something, instead of sending your actual credit or debit card number to the merchant, the digital wallet generates a one-time-use token made up of random numbers. That token is what’s used to process the payment, while your personal information remains secure.

Plus, even accessing your digital wallet in the first place involves other layers of security, like requiring a PIN or biometric information (fingerprint or facial recognition).

Still, you need to exercise some caution. Always keep a close watch on your phone and cover the screen if you’re entering your passcode in a public place.
