Darjeeling Trip Plan | About Darjeeling

Darjeeling is located at an altitude of about 6710 feet and is one of the most beautiful destinations in India. The name Darjeeling came from two Tibetan words ‘ dorje ’ meaning and ‘ ling ‘ meaning land. So Darjeeling literally means ‘the land of thunderbolt’.

Previous to its acquisition by the British East India Company in 1835, Darjeeling was a part of Sikkim (Sikkim was an independent kingdom then) and also of Nepal for a brief period of time.

Agni and Amrita in Darjeeling

During February 1829, a British Officer Caption Llyod spent a few days in Darjeeling. The place was then known as the “Old Gorkha Station of Darjeeling”. The place was nothing like what it is today. It was a deserted region with dense forests and mountains. Caption Llyod realized that Darjeeling can become a great sanatorium or health resort for the British officers.

What is the Best Time to Visit Darjeeling?

Usually, Darjeeling has two main peak seasons for tourists – March to May and October to November. This is the time when Darjeeling gets the maximum footfall of tourists. When you want to plan your Darjeeling trip, entirely depends on what you want to experience at Darjeeling. Here I would mention briefly about the seasons in Darjeeling.

March to May (Spring and Summer)

This is one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasantly cool. After all, one of the main reasons for planning a Darjeeling trip is to beat the summer heat in the plains. The sky also remains clear giving a clear view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. But this is also a peak tourist season and Darjeeling will be full of local tourists.

March and April is the spring season and also the blooming season of rhododendrons.

June to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon usually starts by mid-June and lasts until September. During the monsoon, there are chances of landslides and some of the roads might be closed due to rains. Darjeeling, however, looks immensely beautiful and romantic during the rains, though you won’t get any mountain views as the weather remains cloudy most of the time. Also, tourism is low at this time and you get to see an uncrowded and relatively serene Darjeeling.

Honestly, monsoon is one of our favourite times to visit Darjeeling . We get rooms at cheaper rates, the roads are empty and the mist and clouds that envelope the roads make Darjeeling completely mesmerizing.

Darjeeling in monsoon

October to November (Autumn)

Autumn is also a good time to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasant, the nature is vibrant and the skies are clear. You would get great views of the snow-covered peaks during this time. Bur again, this is a peak season and Darjeeling will be full of tourists, both local and international.

December to February (Winter)

Winter in Darjeeling is extremely cold and the higher altitudes of experience snowfall in December. Tiger Hill, located only 11 km from Darjeeling also experiences snowfall during the winter. Darjeeling gets fewer tourists during this time. If you plan to visit Darjeeling during the winter, do carry woolens with you.

Winter is our favourite time for Darjeeling tour. We love to enjoy the winters of hill stations and Darjeeling never disappoints us in this matter. Also, Darjeeling oranges are quite famous and we get that during the wintertime.

Having said these, you cannot really predict the weather on the hills. At one time, it is sunny and bright and in the next moment, it can become cloudy and foggy.

How to Reach Darjeeling?

The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport and the nearest broad gauge railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). I have mentioned broad-gauge railways because you can reach Darjeeling from NJP by the famous toy train.

From NJP, you will get both shared jeeps as well as rented vehicles to reach Darjeeling. From Bagdogra Airport, you will get rented cabs to reach Darjeeling. Shared jeeps are also available from Siliguri Main Bus Stand towards Darjeeling. Buses are also available from Siliguri towards Darjeeling, but I would recommend you to travel by the shared sumos instead of buses.

Pro Tip: If you are coming from abroad, you will need some sort of a visa that can be applied for online, or at the embassy. For example, The India evisa for Canada citizens is available online.

Darjeeling is a small hilly town, but there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling that can be accessed by travelling a short distance. Darjeeling town is small, but Darjeeling district spans across 3,000 sq km. While there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling and several attractions around the town, you can also visit Kurseong and Kalimpong, two other hill stations that are also quite beautiful and charming. Here I have discussed some of the must-visit tourist attractions in Darjeeling.

1. Tiger Hill

Sunrise from Tiger Hill Darjeeling

I personally feel that a Darjeeling trip can never be completed without watching the sunrise at Tiger Hill . Located at the highest point in Darjeeling at an altitude of 2,590 m, Tiger Hill is located about 11 km from Darjeeling town. If you visit Tiger Hill in the day, it is just another viewpoint and you will hardly see any tourist there. But early in the morning, the place is full of a long queue of cars and people waiting for the sun to rise. Tiger Hill is now internationally famous for its magnificent sunrise view above the Kanchenjunga and other eastern Himalayan ranges.

There is a watchtower at Tiger Hill from where you will get a sweeping view of the mountain ranges.  It is an amazing experience to see the first rays of sun falling on the snow-clad ranges of the Kanchenjunga and Everest. The sky gradually changes colour from golden yellow to orange as the sun rises up the horizon.

The best time to get clear views of sunrise is during autumn and winter. But the weather in Darjeeling can be quite unpredictable and a sudden cloud can totally obstruct the sunrise view. Even otherwise, Tiger Hill is a great place to visit in Darjeeling to soak in the Himalayan beauty.

2. Batasia Loop and War Memorial

Gorkha War Memorial at Batasia Loop

Batasia Loop is located on the Hill Cart Road and is about 5 km from Darjeeling town and is one of the major attractions of your Darjeeling trip . The Batasia Loop is a gigantic railway loop where the Darjeeling toy train takes a 360-degree turn just after Ghum . You can get a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga ranges and the entire landscape from here. There is a well-maintained eco-garden at Batasia Loop along with proper seating arrangements from where you can sit down and see the wonderful views.

The War Memorial is located at the centre of the Batasia Loop. The War Memorial was opened in 1995 to pay homage to the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Just in the middle, there is a 3-metre bronze statue of a Gorkha soldier paying homage. Outside the Batasia Loop, there is a small market area selling curios, bags, hats, and other decorative items. You can visit Batasia Loop after a trip to the Tiger Hill to watch the sunrise.

Timings: Everyday 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM

3. Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta

Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta

Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta is the centre of Darjeeling town and is the most happening place in the entire town. It is a flat piece of land converted into a pedestrian-only zone and no traffic is allowed at the Mall. There are seating arrangements around the Mall where you can relax and have a steaming hot cup of Darjeeling tea. A number of shops are located in the Mall area including tea bars, curio shop, book shops and more. You can stroll around the Mall leisurely or else simply sit on the bench and see Darjeeling come alive in front of you. Horse ride is also available around the Mall at a prefixed rate.

There are a few important places to visit around Darjeeling Mall. You can take a walk around the Mall Road and visit a few of the important and heritage places in Darjeeling. There is also an open-air auditorium and stage where many functions and cultural programmes take place. The Mall or Chowrasta is actually the social fabric of Darjeeling town.

4. Darjeeling Zoo and HMI

Darjeeling Zoo

Darjeeling Zoo or Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is one of the attractive places to visit in Darjeeling. Covering a vast area of 27 hectares, the zoo is the only specialized zoo for the conservation breeding programs of rare Himalayan species like the red panda, snow leopards, Tibetan wolf, Himalayan Black bear and other endangered species.

The Darjeeling Zoo is the largest high altitude zoo in India and covers an area of 67.5 acres at an average altitude of 7,000ft.

The Himalayan Mountain Institute or the HMI is said to be a pilgrimage for mountaineers and climbing enthusiast. It is also a must-visit place for all mountain lovers. It has a museum with mountaineering displays and many expedition artefacts. HMI is located in the same complex as the zoo and both of these can be visited together. Whenever we go for a Darjeeling trip, we make it a point to visit HMI. Just staring at the complex and reading its slogan “May you climb from peak to peak” gives us a feeling of happiness.

7. Happy Valley Tea Estate

Happy Valley Tea Estate - Tea tourism

How can your Darjeeling trip be complete without visiting a tea garden? Happy Valley Tea Estate is the best place where you can get a first-hand experience of tea gardens as well as how the tea leaves actually make way to your cup. The tea estate was established in 1854 and was known as the Wilson Tea Estate . Later the estate was renamed as Happy Valley Tea Estate. The estate covers an area of about 110 hectares and is one of the highest tea estates in West Bengal. Most of the tea bushes here are more than a century old!

Located below the Hill Cart Road, one of the best times to visit Happy Valley Tea Estate is during the plucking and processing season between March and October. During this time, an employee with take you around the tea factory and explain the process of withering, rolling, fermenting and drying and also explain how black, green and white tea is extracted from the same tea leaves. At the end of the tour, tea tasting is also offered. There is also a tea boutique from where you can but best quality Darjeeling Tea is grown at the estate.

Timings: The Tea estate and factory are open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM from Tuesday to Saturday. The factory remains closed between November to February as tea plucking does not take place in winter.

8. Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple

Mahakal Temple on Observatory Hill

The Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple is located just behind the Mall. The Mahakal Temple is located at the summit of the Observatory Hill. As you walk around the Mall Road, you will see a flight of stairs leading up to the hill and the temple. It is believed that a Buddhist monastery named Dorjeling Monastery once stood at the place where the Mahakal Temple stands.

The original monastery was built in the year 1765 by the Lama Dorje Rinzing and it was destroyed in 1815 during the Gorkha invasion. Later the Mahakal Temple was built at the place and the monastery was rebuilt at about 1.5 km downhill from the Chowrasta.

At Mahakal Temple, you will not only hear the chants of Hindu prayers but will also hear the Buddhist monks reading scriptures. It is a beautiful communion of Hinduism and Buddhism, just as we saw at Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Nepal .

Timings: From sunrise to sunset.

9. Ghum Monastery

Ghum Monastery Darjeeling - Places to visit in Darjeeling

One of the most magnificent monasteries near Darjeeling is the Ghum Monastery , also known as the Yiga Choeling Monastery . Located at Ghum at an altitude of 7400 ft and 8 km from Darjeeling town, it is one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries to be built in Darjeeling area. The major attraction of the monastery is the 15 ft high statue of Maitreya Buddha or future Buddha.

It is believed that the clay to make the statue of the Buddha was brought all the way from Tibet. In front of the statue, there are two huge oil lamps that are kept burning all the time throughout the year. The monastery also houses a number of rare Buddhist manuscripts including a 108-volume Kangyur – The Tibetan Buddhist Gospel.

Tenzing and Gombu Rock

The Tenzing Rock is a naturally formed huge rock in Darjeeling and is named after the famous Tenzing Norgay . Darjeeling Toy Train

Darjeeling Toy Train - Things to do in Darjeeling

The Toy Train ride or Darjeeling Himalayan Railways is undoubtedly one of the major attractions of Darjeeling and should be a part of your Darjeeling tour. DHR is the first mountain railway in India opened in 1881 to connect Darjeeling with the plains in Siliguri. This mountain railways is said to be one of the best examples of mountain railways and definitely an outstanding engineering feat achieved during those times. The DHR has been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage site status.

If you have the time, the best way to experience the Darjeeling Toy Train is to take a ride from NJP to Darjeeling. It is a long ride almost taking a day, but the ride will be one of life kind of experience. If you do not wish to venture in this journey, you can take a toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghum or Kurseong.

Darjeeling Toy Train Joy Ride

The best way is, however, to take the Darjeeling Toy Train Joy Ride . This is a 2-hour ride starting from Darjeeling Station to Ghum and back covering a distance of 14 km. The train stops at Batasia Loop. The fare for Darjeeling Joy Ride is between Rs 1000.00 to 1600.00 per head.

Darjeeling Tea

Things to do in Darjeeling - visit a Darjeeling Tea Garden

How can I probably not talk about Darjeeling Tea while writing about Darjeeling? There is almost no doubt that Darjeeling is one of the finest producers of tea in the world. There are a number of tea gardens and estates in Darjeeling district producing some of the finest qualities of tea. A packet of Darjeeling tea is one of the prized souvenirs of India that you can take home.

The cup is actually waiting for you. Take a sip and enjoy the aroma and taste of fresh and pure Darjeeling Tea. Well, that is enough of tea advertisements! Let me now tell you where you can have tea in Darjeeling. There are several outlets, tea lounges and tea bars from where you can taste Darjeeling Tea. Personally, our favourite is the Darjeeling tea at Nathmulls on Darjeeling Mall and Glenarys on Nehru Road. We also love the tea served by the roadside vendors.

Golden Tips Tea Lounge

Some of the best places to have tea during your Darjeeling trip are

  • Nathmull’s Tea and Sunset Lounge
  • House of Tea
  • Golden Tips Tea Lounge
  • Afternoon Tea at Windermere

You can buy your packet of tea from any of these places. But I would suggest you buy Darjeeling tea from places that would provide you with an invoice and not from any roadside stalls. Happy Valley Tea Estate is another good place to buy Darjeeling Tea.

What are the Best Places to eat in Darjeeling Trip?

Breakfast platter at Keventers

Darjeeling has a unique mixture of Bengali, Nepali and Tibetan population. This is reflected well in the food and cuisine of Darjeeling. Added to this is the English influence. So overall, food in Darjeeling is simply something that we can die for.

Delicious and crisp English breakfast is quite common in Darjeeling. Keventers and Glenarys are just the places to have a proper English breakfast. Bacon, sausages, omelettes, eggs with sunny side up, sandwiches along with fresh Darjeeling Tea – who can say no to such food? For the health-conscious, the oil can be a turn-off though.

Momo

Darjeeling is also famous for momos, thukpas and Tibetan and Nepali dishes. There are restaurants serving Indian and Continental cuisines. In short, you will not be disappointed in Darjeeling regarding food!

For detailed information, you can read our article on the best places to eat in Darjeeling .

How much does it cost to travel in Darjeeling?

Monastery near Darjeeling

Darjeeling can be quite easy on the pocket if you wish so. A typical cost of travelling in Darjeeling is given:

Sightseeing costs in Darjeeling by car are fixed. To reduce costs, you can share with other like-minded travellers. You can also walk around and explore Darjeeling on foot. We usually do that on our visits to Darjeeling. You can also hop on to the taxis that the locals use for commuting and visit from one point to the other, and then walk the remaining way.

Trekking permit at Sandakphu-Phalut will come at a fixed cost and so does guide and potter. Permit fee for Singalila National Park is only INR 100. You will get the details of the trek in our blog on Sandakphu Trek .

Shopping in Darjeeling Trip | Darjeeling Travel Guide

Habeeb Mullick and Sons at Chowrasta

Darjeeling, like most of the hill stations, is a shopper’s paradise. And one of my favourite thing to do in Darjeeling trip is window shopping! These days, you will get almost everything in Darjeeling town. However, you would probably want to buy Darjeeling Tea, antiques and jewellery, handicrafts and curio, woolen from Darjeeling.

Some of the popular handicraft items that you can buy from Darjeeling includes Tibetan masks, Thangkas, Khukris (curved Gorkha knives having decorative handles), curios and traditional jewelleries and showpieces. Stoles, woollen sweaters, jackets, caps and pashmina shawls are also widely sold.

There are many old shops and boutique shops at either side of the Nehru Road leading up to the Mall.  Nepal Curio House is one of our favourite places to hunt curio items, masks and thangkas. A Biswa Bangla outlet has also opened at Nehru Road that sells Bengal handicraft items. Another place that I would like to mention is Das Studio . You will get photography items and some old and rare photographs of Darjeeling and the mountains here. Check out the old Darjeeling postcards here.

Das Studio Darjeeling - Travel Guide

Darjeeling Mall is also dotted with a number of shops. I would like to mention about Oxford Book Stores, Habeeb Mullick & Sons (one of the best places for curios), Golden Tips and Nathmull’s at Chowrasta.

Mall Road has temporary shops with hawkers selling woollen and dress items. Bargain well when buying from these markets.

Darjeeling Toy Train Souvenir

Chowk Bazar at lower Darjeeling is a bustling market where you can get any types of household items, clothing items, bags, footwear, grocery and spices. It is infact the local market of Darjeeling town. Prices are relatively cheaper at Chowk Bazar, but I cannot guarantee the quality for items like dresses, shoes and bags.

If you want to buy authentic Tibetan handicrafts, then you should head towards the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre off the Lebong Cart Road. You will get handmade Tibetan carpets, scarves, clothes, handicrafts, thangkas and many more made by the local artisans.

Day trips from Darjeeling | Darjeeling Travel Guide

You can make day trips from Darjeeling to Mirik (known for Mirik Lake) and Kurseong. We recommend to hire a car from Chowk Bazar or Club side taxi Stand to visit these places.

You can also take a day trip to Takdah , Tinchuley and Lamahatta from Darjeeling.

Darjeeling is also the nearest town to Maneybhanjan, the base camp of Sandakphu trek.

Hi Akansha! Thank you for your comment. Yes, Darjeeling is quite beautiful, but you will probably not get snowfall in Darjeeling itself. You might have to go to Sandakphu. And yes, you can travel with your parents to Darjeeling.

Since childhood I’ve witnessed the gradual change in climate, education, culture, society, economy, politics and religions, and recently a bit of business. And when I take the flight retrospectively in introspective mood,I feel sad to land back momentarily. But when I see the flood of tourists with a lot of excitement and sunny faces and the depiction of Darjeeling, my aesthetic sense gets rejuvenated. Salute to the blog writer for the concern shown for sanitation and request to the upcoming tourists not to litter. Welcome for further minute details.

Hello Haneefa! Well, I do not have much information about renting a house in Darjeeling. But I am sure you will get one. You can check out Classic Guest House or airbnb for the same. At Darjeeeling, you will get a steady internet. No issues with that. Hope this helps. 🙂

This is so beautiful! You make me wanna go Darjeeling all the more. Just checking, is Darjeeling safe for solo travelers? Also where’s the best place to stay for female solo travelers? And from NJP to Darjeeling what’s the best mode of transportation for one person?

Hello Ashini! Thank you for stopping by! Darjeeling is quite safe for solo travellers. The best mode of transportation from NJP to Darjeeling for one is to take a shared jeep. otherwise you can reach Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand at Siliguri and take a bus to Darjeeling. You will also get shared cabs from there. If you want a bit more comfort, you can check wizzride as well. Revolver is a good place to stay in Darjeeling for solo travellers. Pahari Soul Homestay is also good. There are a few backpackers hostel in Darjeeling as well. You can check them as well!

Darjeeling trip – A perfect weekend getaway from Kolkata

Photo of WanderMonn

We decided to go somewhere cold for a weekend getaway to experience cold during winter. A Darjeeling trip was it.After having decided the destination next was planning the itinerary. After comparing and negotiating we finally booked the tour with the tour operator-I AM HIMALAYAS.We couldn't get confirmed tickets to Siliguri from Kolkata so we booked bus tickets.Horrible journey it was.I would advise fellow travelers to go by bus only when there is no other option.

Darjeeling trip begins

We took Greenline AC bus tickets and boarded at 7pm from Esplanade on 24th December 2015.Next day we reached around 9:30am.Our driver Pradeep received us at Siliguri bus stand and we started from Siliguri at 10am in Sumo. Our first destination the same day was Mirik Lake.We had lunch at Annapurna restaurant which is situated just near the parking lot. Then we went to the park and spent time there for around 45 mins. The place was crowded as it was 25th December and a holiday too, so many people had come here for picnic. We took some pictures and left for Darjeeling as we were very tired to stay there for long.

After reaching Darjeeling we checked in our hotel (Marvel International) , freshened up and went to Mall.We had Christmas pastries at Glenary's and then had Darjeeling tea at Mall. The night was chilling at -2 degrees.

Next day we left at 4:30 am to Tiger hill to witness the sunrise. The place was so crowded that we had to walk up the hill as we couldn't reach to the parking lot in our vehicle.Seeing the color of Mt. Kanchenjunga change every moment as the sun rises is a visual treat you shouldn't miss on your Darjeeling trip. The early morning chill, with sips of coffee and the sun rising slowly, the whole experience is awesome.

Next we headed towards Batasia loop, saw the toy train, clicked pictures, had momos and left for our hotel for breakfast.

After having breakfast we visited the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (this is one of the best zoos I have seen in India) and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute which also has a museum with display of various Mountaineering expeditions.

Tenzing rock was the next spot on our Darjeeling trip itinerary and it s a huge rock which you can climb with harnesses at just a fee of Rs 50.The view that you get after climbing it is just awesome.

We couldn't experience cabin car rides of ropeway as there was not much time left so we decided to skip this and headed towards Tibetian Refugee Self-Help Center. We went to see tea gardens after Refugee Center. There are many numbered stalls here and they ask you to come back to the stall where your vehicle is parked. They serve complimentary tea and also sell tea leaves just incase you want to buy some. The garden has nothing much to offer but the picturesque view of the surroundings is fascinating. You can wear traditional dresses for a cost of Rs 50 and click as many pictures you want. They don't charge for photography.

Our last sight seeing spot on the Darjeeling trip was Japanese Temple and Peace Pagoda. The place was very peaceful.Do not miss this place. After this,We returned to our hotel, took some rest and went shopping.

Next day morning we left for Siliguri after breakfast. We shopped at Hongkong market-you need to bargain a lot here. The place is very crowded so take care of your belongings. At 7pm we left Siliguri for Kolkata in Greenline bus.Again it was a horrible journey. But overall-the whole Darjeeling trip was fun.

Just an advice (one again) : Go by bus only when there is no other commute option for your Darjeeling trip.

  • Discover Darjeeling

What makes Darjeeling truly remarkable is its proximity to the bustling metropolis of Kolkata, making it an ideal getaway for residents of the city and a convenient escape from the urban grind. Just a few hours away by train or car, this charming hill station offers a refreshing change of scenery, making it an enticing destination for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of Kolkata.

In this blog, we will take you on a journey to plan your perfect escape to Darjeeling from Kolkata, unveiling the wonders of this enchanting destination. So, fasten your seatbelts and get ready to embark on a remarkable adventure as we chart a course to the idyllic hill station of Darjeeling.

1.Choosing the right time to visit

The best time to visit Darjeeling depends on your personal preferences and interests. However, if you are from Kolkata, you may want to consider the following factors when choosing the right time to visit:

Weather: Darjeeling has a pleasant climate throughout the year, but the best time to visit is during the spring (March-May) and summer (June- September) months. During these months, the weather is clear and sunny, with mild temperatures.

Monsoons: Darjeeling experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon season (July-August). This can make it difficult to get around and enjoy the outdoors. However, some people enjoy visiting Darjeeling during the monsoon season to witness the lush greenery and waterfalls.

Festivals: Darjeeling is home to several festivals throughout the year, including the Loshar (February or March), Christmas and New Year’s Eve (December), the Dashain Festival (October) and many more. If you are interested in experiencing the local culture, you may want to plan your trip around one of these festivals.

Crowds: Darjeeling is a popular tourist destination, so it is important to be prepared for crowds, especially during the peak season (March-May and June-September). If you are looking for a more relaxed experience, you may want to visit during the shoulder season (July-August and December-February).

2. Transportation Options

There are three main modes of transportation available for travellers from Kolkata to Darjeeling: by air, by train, and by road.

By air : The nearest airport to Darjeeling is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), which is located about 70 kilometres away. There are several daily flights from Kolkata to Bagdogra, operated by airlines such as AirAsia India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet. The flight time is approximately 50 minutes. Once you arrive at Bagdogra Airport, you can take a taxi or bus to Darjeeling. The journey takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

By train: New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) is the nearest railway station to Darjeeling, located about 75 kilometres away. There are several daily trains from Kolkata to NJP, operated by Indian Railways. The train journey takes about 10-12 hours.

Among all the Indian Railway operated trains, the 2019 launched semi-speed train Vande Bharat is the fastest of all. It is one of the fastest trains in India, and it offers a comfortable and convenient way to travel between Kolkata and NJP. The Vande Bharat Express train from Kolkata to NJP takes approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes to complete the journey. It has two classes of seating: Executive Class (EC) and Chair Car (CC). EC seats are more comfortable and spacious, and they come with additional amenities such as meals and snacks. CC seats are more affordable, but they are also less spacious and comfortable.

Once you arrive at NJP station, you can take a taxi or bus to Darjeeling. The journey takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

By road: The road distance from Kolkata to Darjeeling is about 625 kilometres. Several bus companies operate daily bus services between the two cities. The bus journey takes about 14-16 hours. You can also hire a taxi from Kolkata to Darjeeling. The journey takes about 12-14 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

3. Travel Documents

Firstly, you’ll need valid identification, such as a government-issued photo ID card (like Aadhar card or passport) for all travelers, including children. Make sure your identification documents are up-to-date and won’t expire during your trip. For Indian citizens, there’s generally no need for a visa to enter Darjeeling, as it is part of India. However, if you are a foreign national, you must have a valid visa for India. Ensure that your visa covers the entire duration of your stay, including any side trips you might take from Darjeeling.

4. Accommodation

Darjeeling offers a diverse range of accommodations that cater to various preferences and budgets, making it accessible to travellers with varying tastes. Here are some of the types of accommodations you can find in this charming hill station:

Heritage Hotels : These historic gems showcase colonial charm, featuring antique furnishings, period architecture, and stunning views, offering a nostalgic experience.

Boutique Guesthouses: Smaller, independently-run guesthouses provide personalized and intimate stays with unique decor and cosy atmospheres, ideal for couples and those seeking charm.

Budget-Friendly Options: Guesthouses, hostels, and lodges cater to cost-conscious travellers and backpackers, offering affordability and opportunities for social interactions.

Resorts and Luxury Hotels: For luxury seekers, Darjeeling boasts spacious rooms, spa facilities, fine dining, and breathtaking views, combining relaxation with opulence.

Tea Estate Stays: Immerse in the world of tea production by staying in tea estate accommodations, surrounded by scenic beauty and the aroma of freshly brewed Darjeeling tea.

Booking accommodation in advance is crucial to secure your preferred lodging, especially in popular tourist destinations like Darjeeling. It ensures availability during peak seasons, allows you to take advantage of early booking discounts, and provides peace of mind, eliminating the stress of last-minute arrangements, so you can fully enjoy your trip.

7. Health and Safety

When venturing to Darjeeling, particularly its high-altitude areas, prioritizing health and safety is paramount. Due to its elevation, altitude sickness is a concern. Take the time to acclimatize, refrain from strenuous activities initially, and consult a healthcare professional if you have a history of altitude sickness.

Stick to bottled or purified water and safe, cooked food. It’s wise to carry an ample supply of any required medications, and your healthcare provider can guide high-altitude travel. For high-altitude safety, ascend gradually to allow acclimatization and watch for altitude sickness symptoms like headaches and nausea. Stay hydrated, limit alcohol, and dress warmly to fend off the cold.

Protect yourself from UV radiation with sunscreen and sunglasses. If you engage in outdoor activities like trekking, hire a local guide for added safety. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude activities and medical emergencies is a must.

These precautions ensure you enjoy Darjeeling’s beauty and culture while staying healthy and secure.

8. Cultural Etiquette

Visiting Darjeeling offers not just scenic beauty but also a rich tapestry of cultural diversity. To ensure a respectful and enriching experience, it’s essential to be aware of the local customs and traditions. Here’s a guide to cultural etiquette in Darjeeling:

Monastery Visits: Darjeeling is home to several monasteries, such as the Ghoom Monastery and the Dali Monastery. When visiting these places of worship, remember to dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering. Inside, maintain a respectful silence and refrain from touching religious artefacts or disturbing monks during prayer. Photography may be restricted, so always ask for permission.

Respect for Local Festivals: Darjeeling celebrates a variety of festivals, including Losar (Tibetan New Year), Dashain (Nepali festival), and Diwali (Hindu festival of lights). If your visit coincides with one of these festivals, consider participating in local celebrations. However, be respectful by observing and not intruding on private or religious ceremonies.

Interacting with Locals: The people of Darjeeling are known for their warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, greet them with a friendly “Namaste” or “Tashi Delek” (traditional Tibetan greeting). It’s polite to ask for permission before taking photographs of individuals, and always respect their privacy and personal space.

Dress Code: While Darjeeling is relatively liberal in terms of dress, it’s respectful to dress modestly when visiting religious sites. For women, covering shoulders and knees is advisable. In general, neat and tidy attire is appreciated.

Environmental Respect: Darjeeling’s natural beauty is a source of pride for its residents. Show your respect for the environment by not littering, disposing of trash properly, and participating in local eco-friendly initiatives if available.

Local Markets: When shopping in local markets, bargaining is common. However, do it respectfully and with a friendly demeanor. Acknowledge the value of handmade and local products. Language: While English and Nepali are widely spoken, learning a few basic words in the local language, such as greetings or simple phrases, can go a long way in fostering positive interactions.

Tipping: Tipping is customary in restaurants and for service providers. While it’s not mandatory, it’s a way to show appreciation for good service. Check if a service charge is included in your bill before adding a tip.

By embracing these cultural customs and traditions, you’ll not only show respect for the local way of life but also enhance your own experience by connecting more deeply with the people and culture of Darjeeling. Remember that cultural sensitivity and open-mindedness are keys to creating meaningful and memorable travel experiences.

9. Packing Essentials

Layered clothing: Pack clothing that can be layered to adapt to changing weather conditions, from warm days to cooler nights.

Raincoat or umbrella: Darjeeling can experience occasional rain, so having rain gear handy ensures you stay dry while exploring.

Comfortable walking shoes: Choose comfortable and sturdy shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain and exploring the town.

Sun hat and sunglasses: Protect yourself from strong sunlight and UV rays with a sun hat and quality sunglasses.

Sunscreen and lip balm: Prevent sunburn and chapped lips with adequate sun protection.

Necessary medications and a small first-aid kit: Carry essential medications and a basic first-aid kit for any minor health concerns.

Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated by carrying a refillable water bottle, especially important in high-altitude areas.

Local currency, payment cards, and travel documents: Ensure you have the necessary financial resources and identification for your trip.

Power bank and adapters: Keep your devices charged and use adapters to fit local electrical outlets.

Maps and a guidebook: Navigation aids and informative guides can be invaluable during your trip.

Camera and chargers: Capture the beauty of Darjeeling with your camera and ensure you have chargers to keep it powered.

Snacks and reusable bags: Carry snacks for convenience and use reusable bags for shopping and storage.

Travel insurance details: Keep your travel insurance information readily accessible for emergencies.

Headlamp or flashlight: Useful for outdoor activities and in case of power outages.

Minimal toiletries: Pack essential toiletries to maintain personal hygiene during your journey.

10. Tips for a Memorable Experience

Embrace the Local Culture: Immerse yourself in Darjeeling’s rich cultural diversity. Interact with locals, try traditional dishes, and participate in local festivals if your visit coincides with one.

Go Slow and Enjoy the Scenery: Darjeeling’s beauty lies in its landscapes. Take leisurely walks, pause to admire the stunning views, and savour the moments amidst nature.

Stay Flexible: The weather in the hills can be unpredictable. Be flexible with your plans, as fog or rain might alter your schedule. Sometimes, the unexpected moments turn out to be the most memorable.

Tea Tasting: Don’t miss the chance to taste Darjeeling tea at one of the tea estates. It’s an integral part of the region’s heritage.

Respect the Environment: Darjeeling is known for its natural beauty. Help preserve it by disposing of your waste responsibly and supporting eco-friendly practices.

Local Guidance: Engage local guides for treks and outdoor activities. They offer valuable insights into the terrain and culture while ensuring your safety.

Altitude Awareness: If you venture to higher altitudes, watch for signs of altitude sickness and heed your body’s signals. Descend if necessary.

Shop Thoughtfully: Purchase souvenirs from local markets to support the community. Bargain respectfully and be aware of the cultural significance of the items you buy.

Photography Etiquette: Seek permission before photographing people, especially in remote areas. Respect their privacy and culture.

Enjoy the Slow Pace: Darjeeling operates at a slower pace. Relax, disconnect from the hustle and bustle, and appreciate the simplicity of life in the hills.

Plan but Be Spontaneous: While planning is important, be open to unexpected discoveries and spontaneous detours. Some of the best experiences come from unplanned moments.

Safety First: Whether trekking, paragliding, or exploring, prioritize safety. Follow local guidelines, wear appropriate gear, and respect nature.

Escape the bustling city life of Kolkata for the enchanting beauty and culture of Darjeeling, just a stone’s throw away. So, heed the call of Darjeeling, a place where time slows down, where every vista is a masterpiece, and every interaction is a cultural exchange. With careful preparation and an open heart, your journey to Darjeeling will undoubtedly become an enriching chapter in your travel story, leaving you with cherished memories and a desire to return time and time again. Start planning, and get ready to uncover the wonders of Darjeeling, a destination that promises an unforgettable escape from the everyday.

Planning a Trip in Darjeeling

Visitor Information

Darjeeling's Tourist Information Centre (The Mall; tel. 0354/225-5351 or -4214; www.wbtourism.com/darjeeling; June to mid-Mar Mon-Sat 10am-4:30pm, mid-Mar to May daily 9am-7pm) is helpful and will give you a free map of the area.

Acquiring Your Sikkim Permit in Darjeeling -- Be warned: Getting your Sikkim permit is a laborious process that will last at least an hour. Take your passport to the District Magistrate's Office (off Hill Cart Rd.; Mon-Fri 10am-1pm and 2:30-4:30pm). Fill in a permit application form (remember to have it stamped), then go to the Foreigners' Registration Office (Laden La Rd.; tel. 0354/225-4203; daily 10am-7pm), where a policeman will endorse your form. Finally, head back to the District Magistrate's Office, making sure you arrive before closing time, and your passport will be stamped and the permit issued free of charge. Valid for 15 days, it states clearly which areas you may enter. (Permits are also available from the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi or from Indian consulates abroad.)

Getting There

By Road -- Darjeeling is 80km (50 miles) from Siliguri, which is the nearest main transit point. Buses from Darjeeling usually leave from the Bazaar bus stand on Hill Cart Road. Darjeeling is connected by road with Siliguri, Bagdogra, Gangtok, and Kathmandu across the Nepali border. Kalimpong is 2 1/2 hours from Bagdogra as well as Darjeeling.

By Air -- The nearest airport is at Bagdogra (near Siliguri), 90km (56 miles) away. Jet Airways (tel. 033/3989-3333; www.jetairways.com) and Spicejet (tel. 1 800-180-3333; www.spicejet.com) have flights to Bagdogra from Kolkata (1 hr.) and Delhi (2 hr.). If you decide to fly to or from Assam, there are 50-minute flights available from Go-Air (tel. 1800-222-111; www.goair.in). A taxi ride from Bagdogra to Darjeeling should take 3 1/2 hours and cost about Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500. From Siliguri, catch the toy train (8 hr.) or a taxi (2-3 hr.; Rs 1,000) to get to Darjeeling.

By Train -- From Kolkata (Sealdah Station), the best option is the overnight Darjeeling Mail, which is supposed to arrive at the New Jalpaiguri railway station (scheduled arrival 8:40am) in time to connect with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's famous toy train. The toy train departs at 9am for the scenic 8-hour journey. Or you can hire a taxi or share a jeep (readily available), directly from the station, for the 3-hour, 88km (54-mile) journey to Darjeeling. Although the toy train runs daily, bad weather may disrupt services. If you intend to catch the toy train out of Darjeeling at the end of your stay, and wish to travel in first class (Rs 247), you must book your ticket in advance at the counter at New Jalpaiguri Station. You can reserve other tickets for major trains out of New Jalpaiguri at the Darjeeling railway station daily between 8am and 2pm.

Getting Around

It's best to explore Darjeeling on foot, and if you need to haul luggage, ask for a porter and pay him well. Taxis are overpriced and unnecessary (with the exception of excursions to places some distance from the town). For local sightseeing tours or even jeep trips to Gangtok and other mid-distance destinations, contact the helpful Darjeeling Transport Corporation (30 Laden La Rd., opposite Apsara Hotel). It's open from 8am until 8pm and can advise you on alternatives if they're unable to accommodate you.

The Most Spectacular Train Journey

A polite voice at New Jalpaiguri railway station frequently announces that "the train is running 30 minutes late, the inconvenience caused is deeply regretted." It's a small price to pay for what must be one of the slowest, most spectacular train journeys in the world. Since July 4, 1881, Darjeeling's aptly named toy trains -- including the world's oldest functioning steam locomotive -- have puffed and wheezed their ways between the hill station and the plains. In December 1999, the railway became India's 22nd World Heritage Site, only the second railway in the world to be so recognized on the list. The trip between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling covers a mere 87km (54 miles) but takes almost an entire day to transport passengers up 2,055m (6,850 ft.). En route, with rhododendron slopes, rolling hills, and Kanchenjunga in almost constant view, you pass through villages with names like Margaret's Hope, and puff past the front doors of homes that range from shacks to quaint red-tiled cottages surrounded by potted flowers. You also traverse a total of 498 bridges and 153 unmanned level crossings. The final stop before Darjeeling is Ghum (Ghoom), the second-highest railway station in the world. Don't miss out on the Samosas (singaras) sold by the locals at Batasia. Come back and take your breakfast in the hotel. Later visit the Chowrasta Mall .
  • DAY3: Take breakfast at Keventer's on the open roof terrace. You can get the famous full English breakfast here if you want. Then take a sightseeing tour of Darjeeling- go for either 7-point or mix point tour. • DAY5: Go for a full day 10-point sightseeing tour (see Gangtok sightseeing tours ).
  • DAY6: This is the day to check out and transfer back to NJP/Bagdogra. ALICE'S ADVENTURES ON EARTH

How to Plan a U.S. National Park Road Trip | Build the Ultimate Itinerary

Aug 27, 2024 | National Parks , Travel Tips | 0 comments

At Alice’s Adventures on Earth, we’ve planned and taken a lot of national park road trips — from plotting the best routes, trails, and activities for awe-inspiring views to hand-picking parks that are worth venturing across the U.S. to visit.

I started thinking recently about how to plan a U.S. national park road trip (logistics, activities, travel dates, etc.) and realized it would be helpful to break down the steps to creating a complete game plan and itinerary that perfectly suits your travel style and goals.

Planning a U.S. national park road trip might seem a little overwhelming at first, purely because there are so many options (63 national parks!) and each park’s landscapes, trails, amenities, and activities are a little different.

You’ll find it so much easier to get started on your custom national park road trip itinerary when you follow the 6 steps laid out below. Hit the highlights of the parks you’re most excited to visit and keep to an adventure-filled itinerary that packs plenty of fun and relaxation into your trip!

  • Choose Your National Parks
  • Plan Your Road Trip Dates
  • Map Out Your Route
  • Pick Your Trails & Activities
  • Book Your Accommodations & Rental Car
  • Pack & Prep for Your Trip

1. Choose Your National Parks

With 63 parks as potential stops on your road trip, start by picking the region you want to visit by looking at differences in scenery, terrain, and activities. Then, browse parks in the region and start looking at entrance fees, permit requirements, and lodging/camping options.

Pick Your Road Trip Region

You might want to start your road trip from home, visiting parks in your own region. Maybe you’ll be flying or driving to another city, renting a car, and road tripping from park to park in another part of the country.

There are more parks in the western U.S., but some really incredible parks in the eastern and northern U.S. can make these regions well worth a national parks road trip. Find a list of parks here .

Map of U.S. national park road trip destinations, including all 63 national parks in the United States and territories

What scenery are you looking for? Breathtaking mountains, deep forests, wild islands , pristine beaches, glittering lakes, rushing waterfalls, peaceful meadows —  no matter what you’re looking for, there’s a national park in the U.S. that’ll be a perfect fit.

The terrain of the parks you’re considering should be taken into account. Research any vehicle requirements – high clearance, 4WD, etc. to make sure your vehicle can handle the terrain!

Another consideration is your hiking fitness level. Difficult terrain makes for challenging hikes. Consider park altitude and any acclimation requirements, too.

Browse Nearby Parks

With your chosen region in mind, you can start honing in on nearby parks that interest you most. Research the regional parks’ entrance fees, required passes or permits for areas you want to visit, and available lodging/camping options to choose the best parks for your trip.

Some parks require entrance passes and fees. The fee to enter or get a park entrance pass varies by park, so check this page to find out what you’ll need to pay (if anything). Entrance fees typically range from $20-$35 per vehicle.

Take a look at each park’s available lodging and camping options and think about the activities you want to do while you’re visiting each park to narrow down your options a bit more.

Consider Your Trip Length

Are you able to travel for a weekend? Four days? Two weeks? The amount of time you have will help you start bringing your national park road trip plans to life and decide how many parks to visit.

While it’s always fun to stick around in a park for 4+ days to do some thorough exploring, that’s not the point of a national park road trip — the idea is enjoying the highlights in a few different parks, and that means moving on after a few days to see what the next park has to offer!

A popular stop on a U.S. national park road trip, Acadia National Park in Maine features mountains and wild, rugged beaches lined with evergreen trees as shown

2. Plan Your Road Trip Dates

What time of year is best to plan a U.S. national parks road trip? Visiting a national park during peak season is a completely different experience than going during the low season or shoulder season.

Every park’s peak season is slightly different, but in general, here’s what you can expect:

  • Peak/high season: Most parks are busiest in the summer months between July and August, when roads are clear and open, weather is warm, and camping is in full swing
  • Shoulder season: You may find slightly smaller crowds during the spring/summer (May-June) and fall (September-October) shoulder seasons
  • Low/off season: Most, but not all, parks see the fewest visitors between November and April, when colder weather and low tourism numbers can mean road/trail/amenity/activity closures

Take Seasonal Changes Into Account

The season you visit national parks during will affect the landscapes you see during your road trip. It can be the difference between seeing bare trees, lush green canopies, or fiery fall foliage, dealing with dense, view-obscuring fog or clear views, witnessing trickling or gushing waterfalls, or wandering meadows in sepia tones or a rainbow of wildflower color.

Peak runoff season after snowmelt occurs in many parks means waterfalls are flowing mightily. Wildflower meadows begin to bloom at lower elevations and deciduous trees begin regaining their buds and leaves.

Fog can interrupt mountain views on brisk spring mornings. Some parks, especially those at higher elevations, see snow and cold temperatures well into spring with road and trail closures as a result. Others may see mild temperatures and rainy conditions.

Warm weather, perfect opportunities for swimming, lush greenery, and wildflowers in bloom make summertime the most popular time to visit national parks across the U.S. People fill parks across the U.S. to go camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, climbing, and more.

Afternoon thunderstorms may be more common in some regions during summer, but many parks see the driest weather during these months. It’s a great time to visit to ensure high-elevation roads, trails, and full park amenities (like shuttles and lodging) are open.

Gorgeous, warm shades of gold, red, and purple transform even basic landscapes into something spectacular during fall, with mountainous areas offering incredible views of the fall foliage as deciduous trees blanket the slopes in an array of autumnal color.

Parks are typically less crowded this season as temperatures begin to drop, offering a peaceful chance to hike or bike trails, canoe or kayak around lakes and rivers, and camp. Fog can create visibility issues on fall mornings in mountainous areas, and road/trail/amenity closures may begin in colder or high-elevation parks.

Bare deciduous trees can offer a better view of mountains and surrounding landscapes with snow blanketing some areas for a beautiful, wintry scene. Dense evergreen forests look especially captivating with snow on the ground! Crowds are typically low during winter if you want a secluded feel in more popular parks.

Crampons, microspikes, or snowshoes may be required for winter hikes in some parks. Winter activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding are fun options this time of year.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee shown in fall with colorful foliage in Newfound Pass for considerations when planning a U.S. national parks trip

3. Map Out Your Route

Once you know which parks you want to visit and when, you can start mapping out your route. I always use Google Maps to create a logical route — it really helps to have the address for the park entrance station you plan to use for the most accurate mapping.

Make sure to check park websites for any road closures or temporarily closed sections of the park due to wildfires, construction, etc. Add any additional stops you’re planning to make to your route to develop a clear-cut plan for your travel!

You might modify your route to take you through specific cities you’d like to visit on your road trip , or choose a scenic route over the fastest one. That’s the beauty of planning your own road trip.

Alice Ford stands at the summit of Mt. Townsend in Olympic National Park, overlooking the scenery for a guide detailing how to plan a national park road trip through the U.S.

4. Pick Your Trails & Activities

What are you up for during your national park road trip? You’ll probably want to do lots of hiking, but depending on the season you visit during and which parks are on your list, your activity list will vary.

Make sure to check out towns and cities you pass from park to park and stop by local shops, museums, and restaurants to round out your trip. You never know what you might find!

Do some research on each park on your list and figure out what the must-do activities are at each one. Here are some ideas to keep an eye out for as you’re building your daily plans and activities:

  • Scenic drives & notable overlooks
  • Hiking & biking trails
  • Hanging out on beaches, riverbanks & lakeshores
  • Waterfalls & natural swimming holes
  • Boating, cruises, canoeing & kayaking
  • Cave tours (guided/self-guided)
  • Historic sites, visitor centers & museums
  • Notable natural features & rock formations
  • Rock climbing
  • Winter sports (skiing, snowshoeing, etc.)

Pick the activities that interest you most at each park and find out when these activities are available. Some will need to be booked in advance (like cave tours, boat cruises, or kayak rentals), while others can be squeezed into your itinerary wherever they fit best (like hiking and swimming).

Don’t overbook your days with activities — leave plenty of time to enjoy the parks and relax a little. Even the best-laid plans can change last-minute, so having wiggle room is important.

Choosing National Park Hiking Trails

Consider your hiking fitness level when you’re planning a national park road trip. Are you ready for easy, moderate, or hard trails? There are a few ways that trails get labeled as easy, moderate, or hard/strenuous, but here’s what the National Parks Service says:

  • Easy: Usually relatively flat, short trails under 3 miles on level ground that may be paved; best choice for beginning hikers with limited experience on longer or more challenging trails; some may be appropriate for children, seniors, and people with limited mobility
  • Moderate: Trails with easy, moderate, and/or hard sections that may feature some steep zones and elevation changes that require a moderate hiking fitness level; appropriate for hikers with some skill and may range from 5-8 miles
  • Hard/Strenuous: Challenging hikes generally 5-10+ miles with steep inclines, stream crossings, rock scrambles, and other sections that require high hiking fitness and skill levels to complete

AllTrails.com is really helpful to find the most popular trails in a given park, user-submitted photos and comments on current trail conditions, estimated hike duration, and trail layouts.

Consider how long each hike will take you (leaving a little extra time for resting, taking photos, and admiring the views). Pick trails that won’t exhaust you when you have more hiking days and exploring ahead of you!

5. Book Your Accommodations & Rental Car

Whether you’ll be staying in park lodges, campgrounds, or nearby hotels, getting your accommodations sorted out for each leg of your trip is the next step to making your national park road trip a reality.

Some parks allow or require you to make campsite reservations or buy backcountry permits in advance. Other parks offer first-come, first-served campsites and permits (a challenge to snag during the peak summer months).

A word of advice: Book or reserve everything you can in advance!

If you’ll be camping outside of a park’s campgrounds, you might need a backcountry camping permit .

Some parks require timed entry permits to go into specific areas of the park during peak visit times (like Paradise in Mount Rainier). Check the park website for details on how to obtain permits (free in some parks).

If you plan on staying in a park lodge or nearby hotel , now’s the time to book your room online. Try to pick lodging that puts you close to the areas you’ll be hiking and exploring during your trip — national parks can be massive!

Make your rental car reservations now (if you’re not driving your own vehicle). Remember to research any vehicle requirements for the parks you’re visiting to ensure your wheels can handle the terrain!

6. Pack & Prep for Your Trip

Packing and getting ready for your trip can be a lot of fun! Download a complete packing list if you’ll be doing longer, overnight hikes to make sure you’re not leaving essentials behind (or bringing unnecessary items that’ll weigh you down).

Even if you’re sticking to shorter trails and other activities, you’ll still want to ensure you’ve got everything you need:

  • Comfortable hiking clothes, hat & footwear
  • Outerwear for cold/rainy weather
  • Water bottle
  • Swimwear & towel
  • Sunscreen, bug spray & travel toiletries
  • Trail snacks
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency supplies (whistle, headlamp, firestarter, etc.)
  • Phone & charger, cash/card, ID & keys

Your planned road trip length, terrain, trail length, and activities will play into your packing list, so be thorough when you’re reviewing what to bring.

Here are some of our National Park essentials.

Make sure you have digital proof or a printed copy of any permit, campsite/lodging reservation, or entrance pass you’ve purchased in advance with you.

Take care of any at-home needs before you go on your road trip — pausing mail, arranging pet care if needed, adjusting the thermostat, setting light timers, etc. Plug your route into GPS, load up the car, and get on the road!

Set Out on the Road Trip of a Lifetime

With your route mapped and activities planned, your reservations, permits, and bookings taken care of, and your rental car picked up, you’re ready to embark on the road trip of a lifetime!

Gorgeous scenery, exhilarating hikes, and endless exploration in some of the country’s best national parks lie ahead. You can take pride in the fact that this memorable adventure was dreamt up, planned, and flawlessly executed by you!
