Golden Water Striders are really tricky to get, I made a farm specifically for it. In the desert in a pre-HM world, with no NPCs nearby, I made a lakebed roughly 168 blocks wide with a flat bottom of sand, and placed a water candle at the center, and wired up dart traps to shoot across the area on either end, like such: Trap Block Trap Trap Ground Then I carefully raised the water level until it was high enough (after levelling out) that the darts would kill the grebes and pupfish while leaving the water striders untouched (requires not having a Book of Critter Companionship equipped). Finally, I locked the time to day and the weather/wind to clear, and sat at the center with a Battle Potion, using the Lifeform Analyzer to watch for golden water striders.
