Our heritage

The remarkable history of, royal crown derby.

Discover the remarkable journey of how Royal Crown Derby began in 1750 and grew into a global brand at the forefront of exquisite fine bone china design and craftsmanship.

THE STORY BEGAN

Like all the best stories, ours started small. In 1750 a remarkable artist Andrew Planche established the first china works in Derby. With a passion for creativity his handmade figurines paved the way for the evolution of global ceramics. Fortuitously, Planche made close friends with William Duesbury who’s decorating skills aligned perfectly with his own, leading them to the discovery of the commerciality of crafting and decorating exquisite fine bone china. Committed to creativity and quality, both men were catalysts for the Royal Crown Derby brand, who today continues to be driven by the desire to be the best. With investment from a local businessman, the entrepreneurs established the Nottingham Road factory which quickly developed a reputation for premium quality fine bone china.

ICONIC ROYAL HERITAGE

In 1761, Royal Crown Derby’s remarkable royal connection begins with the creation of the commemorative piece celebrating the coronation of King George III in September 1761. Since this momentous occasion, Royal Crown Derby have developed a unique relationship with the British royal family, supplying every British monarch since King George III.

WORLD-RENOWNED ARTISTRY

Focused on growth, William Duesbury acquired the famous Chelsea China Works factory, resulting in the transfer of the world’s best ceramic artists. The unrivalled artistic skills coupled with the opening of the grand London based showroom, facilitated the widespread recognition of pristine Derby porcelain that remains today.

SHAPED BY ROYALTY

Exemplary design and prestigious craftsmanship were just a few of the qualities King George III admired, therefore in 1775, he granted the honour of incorporating the crown into the brand’s iconic backstamp. This globally admired crown mark synonymous with exquisite fine bone china, continues to feature on every Royal Crown Derby piece crafted today.

ADVANCING LUXURY DESIGN

The guiding principles of a family-run business were born. As William Duesbury passed away in 1786, William Duesbury II inherited a thriving global business. His passion for perfection and artistic flair accelerated the innovation of ceramics. Duesbury recruited a team of accomplished ceramic artists who constantly pushed the boundaries of prestigious fine bone china, using highly lavish decorating and potting techniques. They established the reputation of luxury that Royal Crown Derby has today, supplying some of the wealthiest and most influential people across the world. The hallmarks of these creations are threads that run through everything Royal Crown Derby make today.

HANDMADE TO PERFECTION

When the Nottingham Road factory closed down, six determined workers joined forces to establish the ‘Old Crown Derby China Works’ based on King Street in Derby. With the demand for prestige fine bone china in the middle-class market, they continued to sell many of the original patterns and pieces from the earlier factory, whilst establishing an iconic reputation for stunning handmade china flowers.

In 1875, two entrepreneurs Phillips and Litherland identified a prosperous opportunity and opened the famous Osmaston Works factory. This grand site remains the home of Royal Crown Derby today. The current Osmaston Road factory began production known as ‘The Derby Crown Porcelain Company’.

ICONIC OLD IMARI

The world-renowned pattern, Old Imari, number 1128 was first recorded and can be seen in the famous Royal Crown Derby pattern books held in the museum. This globally revered pattern continues to be produced today.

A NEW ROYAL NAME

Royal acclaim continued in 1890, when the company was appointed the manufacturers or porcelain to Her Majesty. Queen Victoria granted the use of ‘Royal’ in the title and the famous brand became ‘Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company’. During this year the acclaimed decorator, Desire Leroy arrived at Royal Crown Derby to form a design house dedicated to creating new standards in hand painting, creating elaborate pieces with gilding and jewelling techniques.

SUPPLIERS OF THE RMS TITANIC

royal visit derby today

The RMS Titanic was built as an example of opulence and grandeur, meaning it required only the very best suppliers to showcase British craftmanship and design. Like Royal Crown Derby’s clients today, the White Star Line commanded only the best, therefore, on the 31 st of January 1911, Royal Crown Derby was commissioned to supply the first-class dining suite. Correspondence with the ships glass and china retailer, Stonier & Co, remains in the Royal Crown Derby Museum today. This remarkable pattern steeped in British history continues to be made today under the very same roof as 1911, gracing the tabletops within the finest residences around the world.

Harry and Meghan’s glossy Colombia tour ends on a high – but not everyone is convinced

The pair ended their tour in the once notorious cartel city of cali, article bookmarked.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex called time on their quasi-royal tour of Colombia on Sunday with an evening of dancing and cheering in the former cartel city of Cali – but there were mixed feelings from locals towards the couple’s visit.

Upon arrival in the country on Thursday , the pair were whisked to vice president Francia Marquez’s private residence, where it was revealed their invitation had been prompted by Marquez enjoying their Netflix documentary.

The vice-president’s invitation was an attempt to “bring people who give her media attention” due to distant ties with President Gustavo Petro who “has not done much in the last two years”, political scientist Mónica Pachón told The Independent .

But as their tour ended, some Colombians appeared unmoved by the carefully choreographed four-day trip.

“It’s very strange, they move like ghosts,” Arturo, a waiter in Avenida Jimenez de Quesada told the Daily Mail on Thursday.

Adding: ‘Tell me what they look like if you catch them!’

While in a remote visit to the town of San Basilio, just south of Cartagena, Justo Valdés, 70, a singer in the local band Son Palenque, asked: “Who is Meghan ?” and was unaware of the country to which Harry was a prince, according to The Telegraph.

What the couple managed to achieve from their visit remains unclear prompting royal critics to brand the unofficial tour as a PR stunt for both the Sussexes’ and Colombian government.

Questions over the extravagance of their visit, including security costs expected for the Colombian government, have created an awkward imposition against the backdrop of a largely poverty-stricken country.

Colombia ranks second after Brazil in Latin America for economic inequality with 16,708,153, people declared to be living in a situation of monetary poverty in 2023, according to Oxfam and DANE (Colombia’s National Administrative Department of Statistics).

The country also faces significant inequality between urban and rural areas with 30.6 per cent of people living in poverty in urban areas in 2023, compared to 41.2 per cent in rural zones.

In the north, cities such as Santa Marta and Cartagena face ongoing poverty with rampant child prostitution and exploitation in blatant operations.

Colombia Harry Meghan Visit

Critics claim that the Sussexes’ trip was advantageous for both parties looking to boost their popularity in the public eye. However, the Sussexes’ focus on the dangerous impact of social media on Colombian children felt like a gloss over the multiplicity of social, political, and economic challenges faced by the country.

A Bogota-based British journalist said the mood towards Harry and Meghan felt more positive compared to how parts of the media perceived the trip.

He said: “A lot of Colombians are pretty mad for the royals, the antiquated traditions and all the gossip that surrounds them.

“I think most Colombians with an opinion on the matter are pleased that Harry & Meghan have taken the time to visit Colombia, show an interest and spotlight both its wonders and its issues.

Meghan speaks during a forum on Afro women and power alongside Colombian vice president Francia Marquez. (Ivan Valencia/AP)

“Most of the coverage has been positive, including on Harry & Meghan getting involved in salsa dancing and Meghan impressing with her Spanish while in conversation with the VP.

“What irks Colombians more, I think, is the tabloid coverage saying that the trip is foolish because Colombia is some kind of off-limits lawless, hellhole run by cartels.”

Albeit, Harry was caught out in a dubious position when Marquez, who is one of the world’s leading voices in the call for reparations, set up a national commission to “repair the historical debt owed”.

Harry denounced the “unjust” system that saw “enslaved people” generate wealth for the Crown, yet continues to remain a seen member of the Royal family globally despite cutting his familial ties.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have Reinvented the Royal Tour

royal visit derby today

We’ve known that Meghan Markle was a proficient Spanish speaker ever since her pre-royal days, when she spoke about her stint working at the US embassy in Buenos Aires. But it wasn’t until this weekend, during her four-day tour of Colombia with Prince Harry, that the public saw those skills at work. At a Sunday panel in Cali, the country’s third largest city, Meghan delivered remarks in Spanish at an event aimed at uplifting the nation’s Afro-Caribbean women.

“Because we are in your country my husband and I can feel this embrace from Colombia—it’s incredible,” she said. “The culture, the history—all of it was a dream— this trip was a dream. I can feel this community and this is the feeling that is the best thing right now.” Later that day, she even served as translator for Harry as the pair spoke to concertgoers at the Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival.

The duchess connected earnestly with a group of regular people in a country other royals might not have been able to visit, at least not in an official capacity, and the scenes were a reminder of what the Windsors are missing now that she and Harry have set up their own court in Santa Barbara. Still, it’s hard to get the images of their days as representatives of Queen Elizabeth II off our minds, and that might be why their recent international travels—including a February trip to Whistler, Canada and a May tour of Nigeria—have felt so familiar.

Image may contain Meghan Duchess of Sussex Adult Person Child Chair Furniture and Student

These recent trips were made at the invitation of government officials, but, as the British media is quick to point out, they are not “official royal tours.” Even though there isn’t a cut-and-dry definition of an official tour, it generally refers to the fact that when working royals travel on the public purse, they are often representing the head of state at the request of the Foreign Office. The traditional royal tour is about diplomacy—managing relationships with the heads of other countries.

The Sussexes return to the road in 2024 is a sign of just how much their ambitions have broadened since they left the royal fold. Over the last few years, they have been collecting experiences and making connections on issues that include veteran’s advocacy, mental health, online safety, and women’s empowerment. Now, they are beginning to call attention to just how important those issues are to people around the world. Call it the next step in their plan for world domination—or at least their path to global policy change.

On the Colombia trip, which lasted from August 15 to August 18, Meghan and Harry traveled only as representatives of the work they’ve done themselves. The duke and duchess were invited to the country by the nation’s first Black vice president, Francia Márquez, who explained her reasoning in a press conference soon after the couple’s arrival.

“How did I get to know Meghan and Harry? I first encountered them through the media, and I particularly watched the Netflix series about their lives and their story, which deeply moved me,” she said . “It motivated me to say, ‘This is a woman who deserves to visit our country and share her story,’ and undoubtedly, her visit will strengthen so many women around the world.”

Image may contain Prince Harry Duke of Sussex Meghan Duchess of Sussex Hoot Gibson Adult Person and Child

The mutual admiration between Márquez and the duchess was on display from their enthusiastic hug during their first meeting, and it was the beginning of a whirlwind tour that took them to three different cities and introduced them to the music, theater, and fashion of the Latin American nation. Last week, they visited two primary schools in Bogotá, where they took part in lessons about digital literacy and emotional wellbeing. During their visit to Colegio La Giralda , they were serenaded by a group of kindergarteners, and Meghan said, in Spanish, “You’re the same age as my son Archie !”

Though playing the drums seems to be something she only does on tour, it’s surprising how similar their activities in Colombia were to the type of events they might attend when they’re closer to home. For the last few years, Meghan and Harry have visited classrooms across the US and the UK, and Meghan has given similar remarks about the importance of female empowerment in cities from Los Angeles to Austin to Abuja, Nigeria.

But the main focus of the trip was connected to their recent Archewell Foundation push to raise awareness about the harms that children might encounter online and provide support to victims. The centerpiece was a panel where they spoke about their work, and it had a similar format and topics to the one they hosted in New York City in October 2023. In his remarks, Harry mentioned the couple’s shared belief that “information integrity is a fundamental right.”

That statement is reminiscent of the conclusions from the 2021 Aspen Institute Panel on Information Disorder, which counted Harry as one of its participants . Cyberbullying and misinformation might have felt like “first world problems” as the internet was in its infacy, but Meghan and Harry’s presence in Colombia underscored the fact that they’ve become increasingly common in all countries, regardless of socioeconomic status.

In November , Colombia is hosting the first ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children along with UNICEF and other organizations, and Meghan and Harry’s visit was intended to highlight some of the issues that will be addressed during the summit. In a statement about the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the human rights organization explained why the time is right for a return to conversations about violence against children. “Global changes, like the rise of digital technology, environmental change, prolonged conflict and mass migration are completely changing childhood,” it read. “Today’s children face new threats to their rights, but they also have new opportunities to realize their rights.”

Over the weekend, The Sunday Times published an in-depth look at Harry’s life and career, with commentary from some of the friends and employees he left behind in the UK who worry that his California lifestyle might not be enough to sate the prince’s ambitions. “What is the purpose of Prince Harry and what is Prince Harry’s purpose?” a former aide told the newspaper. “The work with Invictus is great and fatherhood was the role he most wanted, so perhaps those are enough for him. But everything else is a bit woolly. I always thought he wanted more from life. I can’t help but think he must be wondering, ‘Where do I go from here?’’”

In Colombia, Harry’s answer to that question was on display, and if his former confidants were able to see it up close, maybe they wouldn’t be so confused. In their post-royal work, Meghan and Harry have tried to change up the old royal routine. In May, Afam Onyema, the CEO of GEANCO Foundation who accompanied the couple on their Nigeria trip , told Vanity Fair that their goals are about doing, not just looking.

“I was really touched when they said, it’s not just going to be a speech and a photo op. They want to leave something, leave a legacy,” Onyema said. “That’s very important to them, from my experience with them and their team—leaving a legacy and impact and really helping people in direct, tangible ways.”

Harry and Meghan's tour branded 'less impactful' than the Royal Family's - poll results

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle concluded their four-day visit of Colombia on Sunday, and we asked Mirror readers if their tours are 'more impactful' than the Royal Family’s

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during their four-day tour of Colombia

  • 12:57, 22 Aug 2024

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently marked their second international visit this year with a four-day tour of Colombia - and but it seems Mirror readers aren't convinced by their 'faux' royal tours .

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited local schools to promote the importance of digital literacy and mental health awareness, and attended a summit on internet safety. The visit was also organised to showcase the country’s culture and history, as Vice President Francia Márquez explained ahead of their arrival that the tour will further "illuminate Colombia's role as a beacon of culture and innovation".

The couple, who stepped down from royal duties in 2020, participated at the Afro Women and Power conference, attended an indigenous dance performance, and visited a percussion school. They also met the Colombian Invictus Games Team, delivered a speech on female empowerment, and engaged with local people.

In May, Harry and Meghan embarked on their first unofficial tour of 2024, when they spent three days in Nigeria. However, some people have been quick to slam the pair for their recent international excursions, due to them not being working royals anymore.

Piers Morgan told The Sun: "Meghan and Harry aren’t real royals these days. So, what gives them the right to prance around the world pretending to be proper royals, on quasi- official visits? There are so many things wrong about this."

In contrast, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams declared their Colombia visit to be "successful" in boosting the pair’s "international profile". Speaking to GB News, he said: "This is a positive royal tour, is one of the best ways that Britain projected its soft power. The Sussexes have jumped on the bandwagon."

We asked Mirror readers if they thought Harry and Meghan’s tours were more impactful than the Royal Family’s , and a whopping 90 percent said 'No, they’re not'. Around 6,015 people took part in our poll, and a hefty 5,405 were not convinced that the trips were 'more impactful'.

Voicing their thoughts in the comments section, one user penned: "They are not even in the same class of the Prince and Princess of Wales and the entire royal family . Their tours are all about making movies."

Another shared: "H & M are not working royals and as such this is not a Royal Tour. It is simply a freebie holiday to keep them in the limelight which is paramount to them, without which they would be what they actually are, nonentities."

A third questioned: "Impact how? They have no status and no power to affect countries," while a fourth added: "They are not touring like the Royals. No protocol. No dress code. This tour is to promote them, nothing to do with the UK government or King Charles himself. Just remember that."

Meanwhile, nine percent said the Sussexes' tours were more impactful, as one person highlighted the important causes that the couple support: "While Harry and Meghan were in Colombia they visited a number of places that use unique ways of dealing with abuse to children.

"Harry and Meghan also went to places to see how people can help each other through their culture. All these visits were also done with the vice president of Colombia so that she could give her insight into those events and allow her security to be used to keep Harry and Meghan safe. Also there was an insight session hosted by Archewell Foundation about dealing with online abuse."

Another shared: "You can't do anything about it, Harry and Meghan possess the same indefinable sparkle as Diana, there is no explanation, there are people who possess it and enchant. People are enchanted by them. You can say whatever you want, but you can't change that. William and Kate don't have it and you can't buy it."

"You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see the Sussex tours are more impactful and more popular than the disastrous tours the rest of the RF have had," agreed a third. While a fourth posted: "Of course they are, much to Charles and Williams pro active annoyance."

Only one percent selected the option 'Other' in the poll. You can still vote in the poll HERE to have your say on the topic. Are Harry and Meghan’s tours more impactful than the royal family’s? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Please note that the poll is still live, so these results may change after the article has been published.

Market Place

You start your tour of Derby's cultural and heritage delights at the city's historic Market Place. The area is surrounded by historic architecture and just a stone's throw away from the former site of Erasmus Darwin's residence in the town. Darwin was a renowned polymath and instrumental figure in the Midlands Enlightenment movement. His work would later inspire his grandson Charles Darwin to develop the theory of evolution and change science forever.

You will notice intricately crafted mosaic stars dotted around the Market Place, you will come across these throughout the day. They form part of the city's Made in Derby augmented reality trail . Download the Made in Derby app and scan the stars to learn more about the famous people connected to the city and how they have impacted life not only in Derby but throughout the world.

Derby Market Place

Walking up the slope on the Market Place you'll come to two of the most historic parts of the city centre: Iron Gate and Sadler Gate. To your right, on Iron Gate, you will see the towering spire of Derby Cathedral, the seat of the local bishop and a heritage gem in its own right. As you walk towards the Cathedral, don't forget to look up as you stroll and take in the variety of architectural styles which have laid claim to the buildings along this historic street, whose name originates from the craft practiced by Viking artisans that resided here.

On the left-hand side of the road, you will spot a large marble obelisk topped with an orrery. This monument marks the birthplace of Derby's foremost artistic son, Joseph Wright (born 3 September 1734), who we'll meet again later. On the right you'll find Bennett's - believed to be the world's oldest department store - which is currently undergoing refurbishment.

Derby Cathedral

Standing proudly in Derby's aptly-named Cathedral Quarter is the eponymous building itself. Designated as a cathedral in 1927, the original All Saints Church dates back to around 943 AD when it was built by King Edmund I as a royal collegiate church. The main body of the Cathedral we can see today was built in 1725 by Georgian architect James Gibbs. The tower, one of the tallest in England at 212 feet, dates back to the Tudor period and houses the oldest ring of ten bells in the world. During your visit you may be lucky enough to climb the 189 steps to the Cathedral's apex and experience the breath-taking views of the city from above. In the Cathedral itself you will find other gems such as the 18th Century Bakewell Screen and a memorial plaque to Derbyshire's Florence Nightingale. You will also find the tomb effigy of Elizabethan noble Bess of Hardwick; for whom Hardwick Hall was built in the north of the county.

Ye Olde Dolphin Inn

Turning right as you exit Derby Cathedral you will come across a small Tudor building on the end of the row, which differs greatly in size to the Cathedral but is no less historic! 'The Dolphin' is the oldest public house in the city serving visitors since 1530! Stop off here for a quick pint or refreshment and learn more about the pub's ghostly sightings and links to legendary highwayman Dick Turpin before continuing your journey through Derby's past.

Derby Silk Mill & Museum of Making

Exiting the Dolphin and heading to the right and down the slope you will see the banks of the River Derwent and the historic Derby Silk Mill. Soon to reopen after multi-million Lottery Heritage Fund investment as the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, the site forms the southern gateway of the wider Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site. Until it reopens as a nationally significant museum and exhibition space, you can appreciate the architecture and history of the site, on which the world's first factory, Lombe's Mill, was built in 1721.

The Silk Mill Ale & Cider House next door also depicts a mural of the Silk Mill lockout of 1833-4, which led to the formation of one of the country's first national trade unions.

Just across from the Silk Mill stands a statue of a regal figure on horseback which dominates Cathedral Green. The figure is none other than Charles Edward Stuart or 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. Charlie led the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion to return the British crown to his father James II who had been deposed by the Glorious Revolution of 1688 in favour of his daughter Mary II and William of Orange. Charles marched on London from Scotland with his army and arrived at Derby on 4 December 1745. After holding a Council of War and considering their future plans, the march was eventually abandoned at Swarkestone Bridge, just south of Derby.

Sadler Gate

Heading back past The Old Dolphin and strolling back down towards the Market Place, you'll find another quintessentially English thoroughfare on your right, Sadler Gate. Shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants adorn the historic buildings down this street which was once the domain of coachmen and saddle makers. One of the major sights is The Old Bell Hotel, Derby's second-oldest pub and one of the oldest coaching inns in England. Call in for a drop of real ale or home-cooked food and step back in time in the incredible Tudor Bar.

Derby Museum & Art Gallery

At the end of Sadler Gate, you'll find Derby Museum & Art Gallery on your left. The fantastic museum welcomes visitors from across the country and houses a number of incredible exhibits such as the largest collection of Joseph Wright paintings in the world, Roman and Viking relics from Derby's past, an Ancient Egypt display and even a prehistoric hippo! Recent temporary exhibitions have included displays of Japanese art and a series of drawings by the legendary Leonardo da Vinci.

The Strand, Derby

Turning left as you exit the museum, walk down Cheapside and turn right onto Friar Gate. On your right you'll walk past another historic place of worship, St Werburgh's Church, which dates back to the medieval period. At this church Samuel Johnson – author of the world's first commonly used English dictionary - married Elizabeth Porter in 1735.

Keep walking down Friar Gate and take in the fantastic architecture on display. The street is named after a Dominican friary that existed here in medieval times – not far from the site of the Friary pub. The thoroughfare is lined with bars, restaurants and a host of shops from antique stores to craft beer outlets.

Pickford's House

As you approach Friar Gate bridge, a former railway bridge and terminal, you will come across another Derby Museums site, Pickford's House. The house was the residence of renowned Georgian architect Joseph Pickford and has been converted into a museum of domestic life in Georgian Derby. The museum is currently closed to the public until further notice although you can still appreciate the skill of Pickford's architectural design, particularly from across the street.

If you fancy a bite to eat drop into the historic Greyhound pub across the road from Pickford's House for a dish from their smokehouse-inspired menu washed down with more great real ale. The pub is operated by Derby craft beer giant Derby Brewing Co. and is named after the popular Derby Greyhound Stadium which once stood near the site.
