How to get to the Ballestas Islands

The Ballestas Islands are a group of rocky islands located off the coastal town of Paracas . The only way to visit the islands is to take a speedboat tour from the town.

There are many local companies that sell their tours in Paracas. These are usually at inflated prices and are not guaranteed to have safe boats or licensed drivers. Avoid the hassle and book in advance !

Paracas is a beautiful fishing town just 3 hours south of Lima . Nestled along the sandy streets are dainty cafes and restaurants serving up fresh fish and killer Pisco sours. Head south for the day, spend the night, or stay on board to experience Huacachina, only a short distance away.

You have 2 options to get to Paracas:

  • Peru Hop bus

There are many public bus companies operating the Lima to Paracas route. The only problem is the headache you will have trying to compare prices and after you choose one, having to find the companies terminal since there is no central bus terminal.

Peru Hop busses offer a comfortable and safe trip, with free pickups and drop-offs. There are also included stops and tours on the way to Paracas which will make your trip much better! Make sure to check out the bus passes and decide which adventure best suits you!

  • Sea lion breeding season is between January and March. During these months you will see the beaches full of sea lion cubs and huge rival males defending their mating territories.
  • Keep your eye out for “The Candelabro”, a huge geoglyph in the form of a candlestick (or is it a cactus?) found on the northern face of the Paracas peninsula. Sailors used this for hundreds of years as a coastal reference point.
  • If you take the Peru Hop bus at 06:00 am from Lima, you have time to do the 10:00 am tour of the Ballestas Islands and continue to Huacachina the same day.
  • Humpback Whales are frequently spotted in these waters between August and October as they move north for mating season.
  • Nicknamed “Peru’s Galapagos”, the islands are a must-see for all wildlife lovers as they’re home to thousands of birds and mammals including penguins, sea lions, Inca terns, pelicans and dolphins.
  • The islands, locally known as Las Islas Ballestas, are protected, meaning you cannot swim with the animals or walk on the islands themselves, but you can get very close to them on a boat tour.

Ballestas FAQ's

I am planning to follow your recommended minimum schedule leaving on one of the 07:00 am departures from Lima. Spending the first night in Paracas do I have time to do the Ballestas Island Tour, go on the free National Reserve Tour and still catch the bus leaving for Huacachina on the second day?

Yes, our buses are programmed to allow you to visit the Ballestas Islands (07:30 am – 9:30 am), the Paracas National Reserve (depart 11:00 am) and still leave for Huacachina to arrive in time for sandboarding at sunset!

I do not feel well and wish to cancel my tour for the next morning. Will I get a refund?

Peru Hop does not operate the Ballestas Islands trip. The tour provider allows changes up to 6:00 pm the day before at no cost. Cancellations or missed tours will be charged the full fee.

I woke up late and missed my tour. Can I change it for tomorrow?

Unfortunately, the operator of the Ballestas Island will charge fully for any NO SHOW or missed tours not previously changed before 6:00 pm the day before. If you would like to book the tour again for the next day then this is possible, but you will have to pay a second time.

Are there pick ups?

No, we meet at Frayles Residencial Hotel. Paracas is a tiny village, just a couple of hundred meters long and Frayles Residencial Hotel is very centrally located.

Is it possible to walk on the islands or to go swimming?

The islands are protected, meaning you cannot swim with the animals or walk on the islands themselves, but you will get very close to them by boat. A unique experience for those that will not make it to the Galapagos.

The Discoveries Of

Ballestas Islands, Peru: Tours + Tips for Visiting This Wildlife-Filled Gem

The Ballestas Islands (or the Islas Ballestas) are a little-known gem off the Peruvian coast. Off the coast of Paracas, they’re filled with birds and wildlife. But are the Ballestas Islands worth it? Read the full guide.

Ah, The Ballestas Islands. Situated in the south of Peru , if you’ve heard of them, you’ve probably also heard their less than flattering nickname of “the poor man’s Galapagos”.

It can be all too easy to skip through your travels in Peru in a mad rush to get to the big sights. Machu Picchu , Cusco , Lima and the Amazon can be so high up on traveller’s bucket lists that they leave little time to see lesser-known places and destinations.

Peru’s southern coast and its surrounds can feel a little out of the way but boast a number of interesting finds. Perhaps none more so than the Ballestas Islands.

Are the Ballestas Islands Worth Visiting?

Guano stained islands

“The Poor Man’s Galapagos”. Doesn’t sound that appealing right? It’s the kind of moniker that makes you question whether a visit to the Ballestas Islands is worth it.

My answer is yes: a visit to the Ballestas’ wealth of bird and sea life is a unique experience that shouldn’t be missed if you are in the region.

Looking for a Ballestas Island Tour? You can book this one online, which comes with a bilingual Spanish and English tour guide.

Where are the Ballestas Islands in Peru and Why Should I Visit?

Booby birds on the Ballestas

If you’d asked me to list what I knew about the Ballestas Islands before my most recent trip to South America, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you a thing. Maybe a vague recollection that they were off the coast of Peru and… no that was totally it.

After my trip, I’d say that the Ballestas Islands are one of the most accessible ways to see some of the diverse ecosystem of South America’s islands. You should 100% add them to your Peru itinerary.

As the Ballestas Islands are only located 12 miles off the Peruvian coast, they can easily be seen on a day trip (in fact, you’re not allowed to disembark onto the islands, so a boat tour is the only way to see them).

So what to expect from a Ballestas Islands tour? If you’re into birds, want to see penguins and sea lions galore, with the odd chance of catching sight of a turtle or killer whale you should make the trip out to the Ballestas Islands.

Any trip to the Ballestas mainly involves circling close to the shores and getting up-close-and-personal with the wildlife that calls these islands their home.

While you’re in the area, make sure you also stop off in Ica, the home of Peruvian Pisco.

Taking the Tour Boat to the Islands

Ballestas Islands Tours From Lima

You could incorporate a trip to the Ballestas Islands into a day trip to Paracas from Lima but you should bear in mind that the latest boats leave Paracas to go to the Ballestas at around 10.30am.

Paracas is a four-hour drive from Lima, so it would mean a very early start. Still worth considering if you are really short on time.

Top Tip: If you are going from Lima, your best option is to take an organised tour .

Ballestas Island Tours From Paracas

Setting Sail from Paracas

Tours to the Ballestas Islands normally leave from the small fishing town of Paracas (or nearby Pisco). We travelled to Paracas by an ordinary bus, but I wish we’d booked on to the Peru Hop hop-on-hop-off bus , it would have made life easier.

Boats depart from Paracas twice in the morning at 8.30am and 10.30am. The afternoon sun and choppy waters can make afternoon trips pretty difficult.

I’d been tipped off that the 8.30am trip was generally the better option because the waters were calmer and the sun less intense (it was peak Peruvian summer and the sun, while welcome, was very much present) – they were right.

First Glimpse of the Islands

So we dutifully climbed aboard our speedboat just after breakfast and set off for the islands.

There’s a variety of tours available.  If you want a really private experience, you can charter a boat and private guide to take you over to the islands.

We opted to pay $29 (around 95 Peruvian Soles) for a speedboat of eight people with a light breakfast and refreshments included.

We passed a few boats that were pretty jam-packed with punters struggling for space on the hot decks, which made me glad we’d decided to spend a bit more on the tour but the end-point is the same however you get there right?

Pretty much as soon as we started the motor and navigated our way out of the harbour, we were joined by these playful fellows…

Dolphins near Paracas

It was the first time I’d ever seen dolphins in the wild and to be honest, I was so excited (so much so that there was a mildly hairy moment where I almost fell in trying to crane over for one last picture – facepalm).

The two dolphins bubbled up to the surface and splashed alongside the boat for a few minutes before disappearing off to find more interesting sport.

As soon as he was sure they were gone, our captain hit the throttle and we started bumping our way across the waves at high speed (definitely a part where you should make sure you are sitting down). Also, take nausea tablets if you are prone to seasickness – it can be quite choppy.

What Wildlife Will You Encounter on Your Ballestas Islands Trip?

20 minutes later, we spotted our first glimpse of the islands. Small dots on the horizon turned into large rocky outcrops as we got closer.

Birds

Birds on the Ballestas Islands

The increasing number of birds overhead gave us a preview of what was to come – by the time we pulled up next to the first island there were thousands overhead and perched on almost every part of available land.

The guide pointed out Pelicans, boobies, terns and cormorants before we spotted our very first Humboldt penguin (an endangered species), quickly followed by several more.

There are over 150 species of marine and migratory birds in the Ballestas Islands, including the Peruvian booby, the Inca tern, with its distinctive red bill and white mustache, and the Guanay cormorant, which is crucial to the local guano industry.

Humboldt Penguins at the Ballestas

That’s all before you get to the uber-cute Humboldt Penguins – the Ballestas are one of the few places you can see them in their natural habitat.

Marine Mammals

Sea Lions at the Ballestas

We circled the larger islands, and smaller outcrops getting as close as possible so the captain and guide could point out all of the things that would have been all too easy to miss.

There was no mistaking the sea lions dotted all over the rocks – though many of them were grouped together on low-lying shores, from time to time we’d see a loner perched on a higher spot basking in the sun (or keeping a weather eye for their next meal depending on how you wanted to look at it).

Seals are less common but also inhabit the islands. As I mentioned, if you get your timing right, you can see dolphins too.

Marine Life

I’ll forgive you if you are so busy focusing on the wildlife above the water that you forget the wildlife underwater. The Humboldt Current flowing past the islands guarantees a rich marine life that includes fish, starfish, sea urchins, octopuses and even sharks.

A Quick History of the Islas Ballestas

Guano Stained Islands Ballestas

The islands played a large role in Peru’s booming guano industry during the 19th century (guano for those not in the know is bird poop). Apparently, when they first started harvesting guano from the islands it was covered in a layer of guano 9 metres deep!

Even now, the distinctive two-tone colouring of the islands comes from the years of accumulated guano that have leached into the rocks and bleached them white.

Additional Attractions in the Paracas Natural Reserve: Visiting The Candelabra

Candelabra Paracas

After an hour, it was time to start the journey back to Paracas, but not without a last stop at The Candelabra geoglyph.

Like the nearby Nazca lines, no-one is entirely sure about the Candelabra’s history and who created it. People think it might be the same or similar tribes (or aliens depending on who you ask) responsible for the Nazca Lines but no-one actually knows.

The sheltered position and relative windlessness of the site have meant the Candelabra has been preserved in near-perfect condition over the years.

You can only really appreciate the sheer scale of the geoglyph from a distance (it’s over 180 metres tall), so most tours stop off on the way to or from the Ballestas Islands.

Before I knew it, we were stepping back onto terra firma. Though the trip had only taken just over two hours, it was a real eye-opener and a wonderful chance to see more birdlife and sea-life than I’d thought possible in a few hours. Not so bad for the poor man’s Galapagos indeed.

Practical Information for Visiting the Ballestas Islands, Peru

Birds flying over the islands

Overall we spent around 1 hour bobbing around the Ballestas during which the guide told us about the history of the islands and their importance to Peru.

How to Get to the Ballestas Islands from Paracas?

Tours to the Ballestas islands leave from Pisco and Paracas. You can also book tours (including a bus transfer) from Huacachina, Ica or a full day trip from Lima.

When’s the Best Time to Visit the Ballestas Islands?

Ballestas Islands in the Summer

Choosing the right time to visit the Ballestas Islands can make or break your experience. Although it’s tough to say with 100% certainty when you should time your visit, there are some factors you can take into account to increase your chances of a successful trip.

Weather wise, The Ballestas Islands have a desert climate with minimal rainfall. That said, they’re often covered by the “garua” sea mist – particularly in the winter months of June to September. Boats still head out on misty days but it might obscure your view. Between December and March is the sunniest time of the year.

Most of the species of wildlife that call the Ballestas home can be found year-round – including the Peruvian pelicans, Inca terns, and Humboldt penguins. If, however, you want to see baby sea lions, time your visit for the breeding season which is usually in January and February.

It’s worth noting that December to March are the high season in Peru so you can expect more crowds. Go in the shoulder seasons (April to June or September to November)  if you want fewer tourists and generally good weather.

Are the Ballestas Islands Worth It?

Definitely yes. The Ballestas might not boast the huge variety of nature of the Galapagos, but a trip comes at a fraction of the price and is a real highlight in southern Peru.

What company did you use for your trip boat trip to the Ballestas Islands? I’ve had a look on-line but can’t seem to find a small group tour – I’d rather pay the extra but would prefer the security of booking before we go. Thankyou

Hi Sue – I booked through the Hotel Paracas, I’m sure if you send them an email they can let you know. I’d definitely recommend them as the boat was smaller than the others we saw and the guide was brilliant. They pickup from the Hotel Paracas pier. Hope that helps – enjoy your trip!

Sounds super exciting. Penguins in Peru, who would have thought? Thanks for the inspiration Julianna, glad I stumbled upon this post 🙂

Peru For Less

Ballestas Islands: Wildlife Haven of Paracas

A boat passes by an arch rock formation jutting out of the water on a Ballestas Islands tour.

The desolate desert coast of Peru may seem void of large wildlife until you take to the sea. Coastal reserves and tiny islands support remarkable marine diversity. Everything from sea lions to penguins come to a pinnacle on the Ballestas Islands, offering one of the best wildlife-spotting experiences in the country. The collection of rocky islands is a short boat ride from Paracas (an area also known for the famous Paracas National Reserve ) and home to marine creatures such as Humboldt penguins, Guanay cormorants, and sea lions.

Overview Wildlife History Traveler Info Tour Planning

The Ballestas Islands (officially called Islas Ballestas ) is the leading attraction that draws the majority of visitors to Paracas. Ideal conditions created by the Humboldt Current enable the animal inhabitants of the Ballestas and the nearby Paracas Peninsula to thrive. The cold current pulls up water from the ocean floor, bringing both lower temperatures and nutrients to the surface. These conditions create an ideal feeding zone for fish, consequently drawing larger predators.

National Reserve

The Ballestas Islands are not within the Paracas National Reserve. Instead, they belong to the Guano Islands, Islets, and Capes National Reserve System or La Reserva Nacional Sistema de Islas, Islotes, y Puntas Guaneras . This expansive Peruvian reserve includes the guano islands like the Ballestas and their ecosystems all along the coast from Tacna to Piura. Special legislation within the reserve permits guano mining with restrictions.

Three main islands form the isles: Ballesta Norte, Ballesta Central, and Ballesta Sur. Environmental laws prevent visitors from landing on the islands, so boat tours cruise their perimeters, arches, and caves for up-close wildlife observation. Shore access in the Ballestas Islands is reserved mainly for scientists and researchers.

Paracas Tours:

Ballestas Islands Wildlife

Roaring sea lions and squawking birds join the crashing waves in a noisy symphony, while the sheer number of creatures make you rub your eyes in wonder. With some luck, you may spot pods of dolphins or migrating whales.

Colonies of Sea Lions and Seals

Basking in the sunlight, swimming for fish, and occasionally performing for tour boats, chocolate-colored South American sea lions are among the most charismatic residents of the Ballestas Islands. Males are huge, with giant, maned heads reminiscent of lions, and can weigh up to 770 pounds (350 kg). Females are about half the size and weight.

Also inhabiting the islands are South American fur seals . Gray or tan and smaller than sea lions, fur seals prefer to lounge on rocky shores where cliffs provide shaded areas. Females are much smaller and typically weigh between 65 and 130 pounds (30 and 60 kg). Male South American fur seals weigh up to 440 pounds (200 kg).

Calving and breeding season in Paracas is from January to March for sea lions and from October to December for fur seals. During these months, cute pups abound, and territorial adult males belch out roars to protect their harems and fend off potential rivals.

Seabirds Galore

The sheer number of bird species found nesting on steep rock surfaces and flying between islands makes the Ballestas a top spot for birding in Peru . Highlighted below are captivating birds you can observe during a tour.

Guanays are easy to distinguish from other cormorants because they have red circles around their eyes and white bellies. Guanay cormorants were the largest producer of guano, valuable bird manure used as a fertilizer, which during the 19th century was the primary national income for Peru. Learn about the fascinating guano trade and how it impacted Peruvian islands like the Ballestas in the History section below.

Humboldt penguins only populate the coast of Peru and northern Chile. Living up to twenty years, these penguins eat anchovies, herring, and other fish.

Inca terns have a dark gray body with a distinct white mustache on either side of their orange-red beak.

Kelp gulls , also known as Dominican gulls, are the largest seagulls in the Ballestas Islands. Their bills are yellow with a red dot underneath, a marking different from other species of gulls in the islands.

Peruvian boobies are year-round residents of the Ballestas Islands and close cousins with blue-footed boobies that inhabit the Galapagos Islands .

Peruvian pelicans can be found up and down the coast of Peru and live in the Ballestas Islands. The throat pouch is blue, unlike that of the brown pelican whose throat pouch is olive-green to red in the breeding season.

History of Ballestas Islands

Guano mining.

Since time immemorial, seabirds have deposited their guano on the Ballestas Islands and other isles of Peru. And since the time of the Incas, this guano has been used as a fertilizer. From the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, guano became a valuable global commodity and mined extensively on Peruvian islands. Peru stuffed its coffers, but the delicate ecosystem that sustained the seabird population suffered significant damage.

Protecting Guano Islands

In 1909, the Guano Administration Company ( Compañía Administradora del Guano ) was created to restore the guano bird population, protect the natural environment, and manage extraction. By the mid-1900s, the wide availability of synthetic fertilizers diminished the importance of guano.

Guano, some say, used to cover the isles in layers of 65 to 230 feet (20 to 70 m) deep. Today, the guano is much thinner. Mining is limited to three months as part of protective measures enacted to avoid further disruption of the seabird ecosystem.

In 1975, the Paracas National Reserve was established to protect the marine ecosystem and remains of indigenous Paracas Culture on the mainland of the Paracas Peninsula. Later, in 2009, the Reserva Nacional Sistema de Islas, Islotes y Puntas Guaneras was created to protect the Ballestas Islands and other Peruvian isles guarding representative samples of rich and diverse Humboldt current ecosystems.

Today, more than 150,000 people per year (MINCETUR, 2018) visit the Ballestas Islands, making it a top attraction of the southern coast of Peru. In the summer months, weekend vacationers from Lima appreciate the sunshine and seafood specialties.

Traveler Info

Best time to visit.

Paracas is a popular getaway for travelers as well as city residents of Lima. Mild annual temperatures (60-80°F | 18-27°C) and minimal rainfall make Paracas and the Ballestas Islands year-round destinations. Also, different seasons bring various wildlife highlights to the islands. The peak season for the region is during summer (December through February), Easter Week (or Semana Santa ), and dates around Peru’s Independence Day (or Fiestas Patrias ) every 28th and 29th of July.

In and Around Paracas

El Chaco, otherwise known as the “town of Paracas,” rests on the southern shores of the bay and is the departure point for Ballestas boat tours and land excursions on the Paracas Peninsula. El Chaco is only 10 miles (16 km) south of the town of Pisco and its small airport.

How to Get to the Ballestas Islands

Boat tours begin and end in El Chaco. Paracas is about 155 miles (250 km) south of Lima along the Panamerican Highway. Daily bus service connects the capital and Paracas along a direct route that takes around four hours. In some cases, buses go as far as Pisco from where you can catch a safe taxi, Uber, or local bus for the short transfer to El Chaco.

Ballestas Islands Entry Fee

Entry to the national reserve that protects the Ballestas Islands is 11 soles per adult. Sometimes the fee is included in the cost of your guided tour.

Where to Stay

The small fishing village turned tourism hub of El Chaco is a comfortable spot to base your exploration for a few nights. Restaurants and local shops are within short walking distance, and our travel experts can arrange convenient hotel pick-up for your daily guided tours. For an extra treat, enjoy one of the classy bayfront hotels in Paracas .

Motion Sickness

Travelers prone to seasickness will benefit from taking a remedy to prevent seasickness or reduce symptoms. There is no way to avoid at least a little rocking motion during a Ballestas boat tour, even during the morning when the ocean is usually calmer.

What to Pack

Travel comfortably to the Ballestas Islands with the following items:

  • Windbreaker or light jacket to protect against chilly winds
  • Poncho or hat to keep off potential bird droppings
  • Camera with zoom
  • Seasickness remedy
  • Life vests provided by the boat tour provider

Ballestas Islands Tours

Boat tours to the Ballestas Islands depart from El Chaco and last around two hours . Bilingual guides tell you about the animal species, as well as the mysterious shape etched into the side of a cliff along the coast, known as the Candelabro , that you pass during the outbound journey.

Buy a ticket for a tour in El Chaco or contact our travel experts to organize a fun Ballestas tour as part of your custom trip to Peru.

Group Vs. Private Boat Tour

Group tours to the Ballestas depart from the main pier in El Chaco. Daily tours start at 8 am, and the last departure is generally at 10 am or 10:30 am. Later in the afternoon, the ocean is usually too rough, so there are no tours. Occupancy varies though speedboat tours tend to be more crowded during peak southern hemisphere summer months from December to mid-March.

Private Ballestas boat tours are recommended for a more intimate experience or if you are planning a one-day getaway from Lima. Although more pricey, booking a private tour offers more flexible departure times around your itinerary and additional one-on-one time with your guide to answer all your wildlife inquiries.

Ballestas Islands Tour Combos

If you are visiting the Ballestas Islands, then you’re already heading to Paracas and have the opportunity to maximize your discovery of the country’s desert coast. Base yourself at a Paracas hotel and plan excursions to view the mysterious ancient glyphs in a plane, go sandboarding around an oasis, or sample Peruvian pisco and wine in the countryside.

Ballestas Island and Paracas National Reserve Tour

Snap photos galore during a morning tour through the Ballestas and then turn to an on-land adventure to the neighboring national reserve encompassing the Paracas Peninsula. Miles of stunning coastline and the ancient burial grounds of the Paracas culture are all part of the full Paracas experience .

Ballestas Islands Tour from Lima

Plan a day trip from Lima to the Ballestas Islands and close-by attractions. This whirlwind itinerary involves a lot of drive time (around 6 hours roundtrip from Lima), but it’s a great way to check out the country’s southern coast highlights if your time is limited. Ask our team for more details about the best transport and Paracas tour planning for your custom-made vacation.

Ballestas Islands and Nazca Lines Tours

Discover the Ballestas Islands and take to the sky on a flyover tour of the Nazca Lines . There is a small airport in the town of Pisco, just north of El Chaco, which is where flights over the mysterious glyphs takeoff and save you the 3.5-hour drive to Nazca where tours also depart.

A common way to combine these tours together is to arrive in Pisco, embark on a Nazca Lines flight, and then check-in to a hotel in Paracas for the night. After your Nazca Lines tour , visit the Ballestas and enjoy the Paracas region before traveling onward by bus to your next destination in Peru .

Ballestas Islands and Pisco Tour

Pair a wine tour in the Ica Valley with the Ballestas. About 1.5 hours from El Chaco, just outside the town of Ica, local vineyards called bodegas are the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Swirl, smell and sip a variety of wines as well as Peru’s famed clear brandy with a potent taste, pisco .

Ballestas Islands and Huacachina Oasis

Tucked away in the dunes is the oasis of Huacachina, the hub for the best sandboarding in Peru. Match your wildlife tour of the Ballestas with an adrenaline-pumping dune buggy ride and sandboarding tour.

Ballestas Islands Boat Tour: Everything to know!

By Paracas Peru

peru island tours

Paracas is known as the perfect getaway destination due to its near perfect weather, natural wonders, and exciting activities. Out of all the things, most would agree that the Ballestas Islands Boat Tour is the best of them all. Here’s what to expect, what to bring, prices, and more!

Ballestas Islands Boat Tour: what to expect

The Ballestas Islands are often referred to as the Peruvian Galapagos because of its abundant and diverse marine wildlife such as sea lions, penguins, and more.

Currently, the Ballestas Islands remain as a protected area in order to preserve the marine wildlife and its ecosystem. Therefore, the only way to visit this beautiful place is by taking a boat tour. Most of the operators offer a 2-hour boat tour, starting in the morning, where you’ll be able to get up close to its landscapes and watch the animals in their natural habitat, making it the perfect choice for animal lovers!

Ballestas Islands boat tour

Once in the port, you will depart with a speed boat towards the islands. The first ride lasts 30 minutes with a stop to see the ‘Candelabro’, a geoglyph on the sand of the Paracas National Reserve .

The boat will be floating around for 1 hour allowing you to get to see some animals in their natural environment. The guide will be explaining the history and the importance of these islands while you appreciate the amazing views. After the tour, you will head back to the port in a 30-minute ride.

Important note: Children under 1 are not allowed on the tour. This applies for all tour operator’s.

Prices vary depending on the tour operator service, however, the average cost will be 19.00 USD per person. Note that for any reservation, you will have to book the tour in advance.

What’s usually included

  • Life jackets
  • Tour guide Spanish/English

How to get to the Ballestas Islands

To get to the Ballestas Islands one must be in Paracas. Currently, the only way to get to this small town is by land.

Peru Hop is the most reputable bus company for travelers due to its flexibility, safety and years of experience. With Peru Hop, you can easily start your trip to Paracas from Lima, Arequipa, Puno or even Cusco, whether it’s on a day trip from Lima which already includes the Ballestas Islands Boat Tour or a hop-on, hop-off pass which includes a free visit to the Paracas National Reserve. Check out our how to get to Paracas page for more info of the best options!

Once in Paracas, you’ll find different tour operators, but not all of them are the same. Make sure to choose your tour operator wisely since in many opportunities, travelers have been scammed. We encourage you to visit FindLocalTrips.com , the best platform for comparing tour operators, prices, and activities in South America.

Recommended

Here are some recommendations on what to bring to visit the Ballestas Islands, make sure to follow these suggestions so you can experience this adventure at its fullest.

  • Protect yourself from the sun. Make sure to apply sunscreen at least every 45-50 minutes, as well as wearing a sunhat and sunglasses since Paracas usually have clear skies all year long.
  • Bring a light jacket. Although rain is not very common in this region, while going on the speedboat, you could get wet from all the splashes. Keep in mind that the pacific ocean waters are cold, so you better be prepared with a light sweater or a windbreaker for the boat ride.
  • Don’t forget your camera! This must be in every traveler’s list, the Ballestas Islands are as visually striking as you can imagine, and you definitely don’t want to miss the opportunity of immortalizing these landscapes full of gorgeous animals.
  • Bring your binoculars. If you love birdwatching as much as us, this is one of the things you should not miss while packing your bag for this tour. With these, you’ll see penguins from a distance since they tend to hide from boats and people.

Without a doubt, Paracas gathers the most exciting activities near Lima, making it the perfect destination to escape to. Learn more about Paracas to enjoy the most of this beautiful town!

"Lost" Machu Picchu

Exploring mystical machu picchu in peru's sacred valley.

The abandoned Incan "city" of Machu Picchu in Peru's Andes Mountains is a mystery. No one knows for sure why it was built, some 500 years ago – or why it was deserted. In fact, this ancient citadel was hidden from the western world until Hiram Bingham, an archaeologist from Yale University who was searching for other ruins from the empire of the Incas, stumbled upon it by accident in 1911, and dubbed it the "Lost City of the Incas." Maybe you can figure it out as you explore this amazing maze of a place, with what experts guess was a palace, dungeons, and over 100 staircases.

Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel

At the gateway to the inca empire.

The only hotel located at the entrance to Machu Picchu, Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel, lets you beat the daily crowds that flock to Peru's centuries-old Inca citadel. Sitting in the shadows of the Lost City, this stylish retreat is an oasis of calm before or after a day exploring Machu Picchu. Unwind with a yoga session, take part in a traditional shaman ceremony in the garden, or sip muña tea in Tampu Bar. Tranquility, wonder and beauty are at the heart of the lodge's unique experience.

An amazing adventure. Machu Picchu was everything it was hyped up to be. It was very special to spend the night up there in a lovely 5 star hotel.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Peru and Ecuador. You do not need a visa for this tour provided that you do not stay in Peru or Ecuador longer than 90 days.

If you are a citizen of another country , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Peru and of Ecuador to determine what travel documentation is required.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Cruise Regulations

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to space limitations aboard the motor coaches and local aircraft, we urge that only one piece of checked luggage be brought on this trip. Additionally, space constraints and weight limitations aboard the train to Machu Picchu require guests to carry limited personal belongings. Each passenger is restricted to no more than 50 lbs ( 23 kg) of luggage. Therefore, we will provide you with a duffel bag (roughly 1 ft by 1 ft by 2 ft in overall dimensions, or 30.5 cm by 30.5 cm by 60 cm) to carry your clothing and personal items for your one-night stay in Machu Picchu. Meanwhile, checked luggage will be stored, at the Belmond Monasterio in Cusco during the Machu Picchu excursion and, if desired, the Oro Verde Hotel, in Guayaquil during the cruise. Small carry-on bags are permitted, but Ecuadorian airlines will check large wheeled carry-on's, if desired with the larger luggage. If you reside in the Continental United States the duffel bag will be sent to your home and should arrive approximately two weeks prior to your departure for Peru. Guests residing in Alaska, Hawaii or outside of the U.S will receive their duffels upon arrival in Lima. Each guest is also restricted to one carry-on bag weighing no more than 22 lbs (10 kg) and maximum dimensions of 55 cm high + 35 cm long + 25 cm wide.

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc. For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

To fully enjoy this tour's itinerary, participants must be in good health. This is a rigorous tour and you need to be in good physical condition with good balance as the terrain varies from sandy beaches to uneven lava and rocks. Proper walking shoes with ankle support are essential. You may want to bring a walking stick – there are a few available on board Isabela II for the Galápagos section of your journey. Walks range from 1 to 2 mi (3 to 6 km) in length and last from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

You will spend several days touring at high altitudes in Peru [especially Cusco at 11,200 ft (3,414 m)]. At these altitudes some visitors may suffer varying degrees of altitude sickness, including nausea. We have found that some guests may be more affected by the altitude than others. Medications are available to prevent altitude sickness, and we urge you to speak with your physician prior to your departure from home to discuss prophylaxis for safe travel.

All ship-to-shore transfers use Zodiacs or Pangas (capacity 9 to 12 persons). Occasionally you will get wet with spray. Some wet landings require guests to wade through knee-high deep coastal water.

There are three decks on Isabela II ; however, there is no elevator.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Isabela II does not have mechanical stabilizers because the water around the Galápagos Islands is very calm. However, the ship has a rounded hull that helps minimize rocking. We travel between the various islands so the areas in which we cruise are sheltered. If you are prone to seasickness, bring a non–drowsy, over-the-counter, anti-nausea medication. Anti-nausea wristbands are also a good idea. The anti-nausea patch is NOT recommended for use in the islands as it tends to impair vision in direct sunlight.

A complimentary reusable water bottle will be supplied on board Isabela II to use onboard and ashore while on your excursions.

Guests bringing a quantity of medication with them are advised to carry written copies of their prescriptions from their doctor to avoid possible problems with customs officials.

Smoking is not permitted in any interior space on board Isabela II.  Smoke and open fire will activate the smoke detectors. Smoking is allowed on Deck 2 forward the stern only, and there are ashtrays placed in specific exterior deck areas. Please do not throw your cigarettes overboard, as it is a violation of international maritime pollution laws and they can easily be blown back onto the ship. Please refrain from smoking on shore and in shore excursion vehicles and ship tenders. Smoking is also not permitted on the motor coaches. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

The only islands with bathroom facilities are San Cristobal and Baltra, where there are visitor centers and airports. We will be returning back to the ship for lunch and dinner, and Zodiacs or Pangas will travel back and forth to the ship during shore excursions.

The infirmary on Isabela II is staffed by a licensed Ecuadorian doctor. If you avail yourself of his/her services, a charge will be posted to your personal shipboard account. Isabela II is registered in Ecuador. Please check with your insurer to determine if coverage applies while you are traveling, and purchase appropriate travel insurance if necessary.

If you are traveling as the guardian of a child or children, we strongly suggest you bring along a letter from both parents of the child authorizing any emergency treatment, as medical facilities may require permission from the child's parent or parents.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The Peruvian coast is generally sunny and hardly ever receives any rain, but from April to November there is a heavy sea mist. The highlands have a wet season (October to April) and a dry season (May to September), when the days are clear and sunny but cold at night especially at higher altitudes.

The Galápagos Islands lie almost on the equator about 650 miles (1,046 kilometers) west of the coast of Ecuador. The islands have an unusual climate in view of their proximity to the equator; rainfall is low and temperatures are lower than would be expected. There are no extremes of heat or cold, and temperatures range from 75° to 86°F (24° to 30°C) year round. The weather is hot and sunny in the islands and sea temperatures average 67° to 72°F (19° to 22°C). For guests planning on swimming, most swimming takes place at midday hours. Although there is more rain on the larger islands which are hilly (such as Seymour Island), rainfall is low at sea level and comes during the months of January to April. Light drizzle and even fog, however, are not uncommon at other times of the year.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

This is a very casual tour.  Dressy clothing is not required for the farewell dinner.  You may, however, want to bring one dressy outfit for our dinner at a private home on Night 2.  Most important are comfortable walking shoes with ankle support for walks over rocky, uneven terrain.  You will also need reef shoes or aqua shoes for beach landings. Your feet will get wet.  Bring a windbreaker, sweater or jacket for the cool nights at sea.

Bring a bathing suit for swimming and snorkeling (snorkeling equipment is provided or you can bring your own).  If you use a prescription snorkeling mask, you will need to bring it with you.  A wetsuit is recommended for snorkeling in September and October, as the water tends to be cooler.  Shortie wet suits are provided on the ship for your convenience.

To assist in early morning wake-ups, we suggest bringing a compact, battery operated alarm clock. You can also arrange a wake-up call while on board.

A small backpack will be very useful during Galapagos shore excursions and our visit to Machu Picchu.

IMPORTANT: Sundries and toiletries are difficult to find in the Galapagos Islands.  Provided for you in your stateroom are biodegradable shampoo, body wash and a bar of soap.

Consider packing a number of garment combinations you can mix and match over four or five days before needing to do laundry. There are no guest laundry facilities available aboard ship, only a clothes dryer to dry wet clothing.

Beyond your normal wardrobe and personal grooming items, we suggest you also bring along:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT!)
  • Rain gear (lightweight slicker)
  • Sunscreen, sunhat, lip balm with SPF 15 or higher
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function
  • Small flashlight
  • Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.
  • Insect repellent
  • Swimming attire
  • Teva-style sandals or water shoes
  • Seasickness / high altitude medication
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags for cameras during ship-to-shore transfers
  • Antibacterial lotion
  • Small backpack
  • Camera (with extra memory cards, telephoto lens, chargers and batteries)

We recommend that you pack any prescription medicines (an adequate supply for your entire journey) along with your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag, in order to minimize any inconvenience should your luggage be lost or delayed.  We also recommend, for your peace of mind and personal security, that all expensive jewelry and other valuables be left at home.

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Machu Picchu and Easter Island

Machu Picchu, Peru

13 Days/12 Nights

From $3,279 per person

(Dbl. Occupancy, Not Incl. Airfare)

Daily Departures Throughout the Year

Our Machu Picchu and Easter Island Tour offers an opportunity to explore two of the most interesting archaeological sites in South America. It was recently named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Easter Island, located 2,200 miles west of Chile in the Pacific Ocean, is home to over 800 colossal Moai statues that stand up to 33 feet tall, and whose origin is still a mystery.

Best Time to Go: April-October.

Destinations: South America , Peru , and Chile .

If you are staying in Aguas Calientes, you will also need to purchase a round-trip bus ticket ($28 per person) for transportation to the site. The first bus departs at 5:30 AM. As an alternative to visiting Machu Picchu again, you can hike Huayna Picchu (a +/- 60 minute hike), or partake in another activity. The cost for hiking Huayna Picchu is $13 (in addition to the second entrance ticket). Do Inca Expert tours have specific start dates?

No, our Peru tours can start any day of the year. Our trips are fully customizable; you can choose the start and end date of your trip, the specific destinations you want to see, the hotels you prefer, and the tours you want for a unique experience.

How much time do I need to see Peru?

Give yourself at least 4 days in Peru to avoid being affected by altitude sickness when visiting Machu Picchu. Most visitors exploring the iconic sites of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu spend between 7 - 10 days in Peru. If you want to add destinations like the Amazon Rainforest, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, or the Nazca Lines, allot 2-4 days for each destination depending on the destinations and tours you want.

How do I get to Machu Picchu?

After arriving at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, take an hour and a half flight from Lima to the city of Cusco. In Cusco, a scenic train ride will transfer you 3 hours and 15 minutes to the quaint town of Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. A 30-minute shuttle bus ascends you to the main entrance of the Machu Picchu citadel. You can also opt to hike one of the famous treks to Machu Picchu from Cusco or the Sacred Valley like the Inca Trail, Lares Trek, or Salkantay Trek instead of the train.

We recommend you pace yourself and arrive at Machu Picchu gradually to avoid being affected by altitude sickness. Spending one or two nights in Cusco will acclimate your body to the high altitude and result in a more enjoyable experience at Machu Picchu.

When is the best time to travel to Peru?

The best time to visit Peru is during Peru's winter months between May and September. This is the dry season in the Andes which offers favorable weather patterns for the most popular sites in Peru like Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Inca Trail, and the Amazon Rainforest in Puerto Maldonado. The prime time to visit coastal Lima is during Peru's summer months between December and April to enjoy the warm summer sunshine and coastal beaches.

Do I need a visa to enter Peru?

Travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, and select other countries do not need a tourist visa to enter Peru. Do note that all travelers must have a passport that is valid for more than six months after your departure date. Upon arrival at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport, Peruvian Immigrations will stamp your passport and mark the number of days you are permitted to stay, typically 90 days.

For specific information about visa requirements for your country, visit VisaHQ.

Is Peru safe?

Yes, Peru is a safe tourist destination to travel to. Travelers should exercise regular caution by keeping expensive items in your hotel safety box, keeping an eye on personal belongings, and being aware of your surroundings in crowded areas like markets.

Our Top Pick hotels are all located in safe, convenient locations and come equipped with safes for storing your valuables.

For safety information regarding Covid-19, please review our updated post about coronavirus in Peru.

Consult your doctor and visit the CDC Peru website for more information about vaccination recommendations and requirements in Peru.

Should I go to Lima?

We think - yes! Lima houses something for every kind of traveler, world-renowned gastronomy that brings travelers specifically to Lima, a UNESCO downtown historic center, top museums like Larco Museum, art galleries, shopping malls overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and adventure activities like paragliding over the Lima skyline or surfing. Since you'll be landing at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport anyway, why not add on an extra day in Peru's capital?

Contact an Inca Expert travel advisor to see if Lima would be worth adding to your Peru trip.

What language do Peruvians speak?

Spanish is the primary language spoken in Peru as a result of being colonized by Spain in 1533. The indigenous languages of Quechua and Aymara are also official languages of Peru that can be encountered more often in rural areas. Even though English is not widely spoken in Peru, your guides, hotel personnel, and the use of a language translator like Google Translate will make your time in Peru easy.

All Inca Expert tours are done in private with English-speaking local guides.

Can you drink the tap water in Peru?

No. Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink unless purified or boiled. Travelers should purchase bottled water. You can also utilize refill stations with boiled or filtered water often available in your hotel lobby. Boiled drinks like coffee and tea are safe to drink.

What is transportation like on Inca Expert's Peru tours?

Inca Expert prearranges all transportation for your Peru tour to give you complete peace of mind. Private, clean, and roomy H1 or Sprinter vans will meet you at your hotels or airport and bring you from A to B. Choose between the Luxury Hiram Bingham train or Vistadome Train to Machu Picchu. If traveling from Lima to the Nazca Lines or Paracas, a VIP bus with large seats and ample leg-room will be reserved in your name.

Do I need to buy a voltage converter/plug adapter for my Peru trip?

You may need to bring a voltage converter and electrical plug adaptor for your electronics when traveling in Peru. Peru uses 220-volt electricity, instead of 110-volts. If your device does not have built-in dual voltage (110V/220V) you will need an adaptor so your electronics do not surge. Most mobile phones, laptops, and cameras have this built-in, but be sure to double-check before plugging in. Most electrical outlets, like the ones in top-rated hotels, are now designed to support both the American flat-pronged plug and the European round-prong plug, but if you plan to charge your devices offsite from your hotel, it will be handy to have a Type C plug adapter just in case.

Can I use ATMs and credit cards in Peru?

Yes. ATMs are abundant in major cities but generally charge a $3-$6 fee to your debit card to use the machine. Locations include BCP, Scotiabank, Interbank, BBVA Continental, and more. Credit cards are widely accepted in Peru with VISA being the major credit card provider. Always keep some Peruvian soles on hand because some locations offer discounts for cash, and local markets and street vendors only accept soles.

How much do I tip?

It is customary to tip in Peru for exceptional services as you'll receive on a tour with Inca Expert. The exact amount is up to your discretion, but we recommend:

Guide: Half-day private tour - 30-35 soles ($8-$10 USD) Full-day private tour - 50-60 soles ($14-$16 USD)

Driver: Half-day private tour - 5 soles ($1.50 USD) Full-day private tour - 10 soles ($3 USD)

4-Day Inca Trail/ Multi-day Trekking tour: Guide: 60-80 soles per person ($16-USD 22) Chef: 115 soles collective tip (USD 30 collective tip) Porters: 100 soles per porter collective tip (USD 25 per porter collective tip)

Servers: 10% of the total bill

What is the exchange rate?

The exchange rate for US dollars (USD) to Peruvian Soles (PEN) is currently $1 USD to 3.77 PEN. Money can be exchanged at an exchange house (casa de cambio) in any destination in Peru though bigger cities like Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima will have more options to find the best rates.

Will I experience symptoms of altitude sickness on my Peru tour?

40-50% of travelers experience minor symptoms of altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness, like shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness when traveling in high altitude destinations in Peru such as on the Inca Trail, in Cusco, Arequipa, and Lake Titicaca. Symptoms of altitude sickness generally alleviate after 24-48 hours in altitude. Best practices for minimizing its impact on your trip include taking the time to acclimate, drinking lots of water, resting, avoiding alcohol, and eating light non-fatty foods upon arrival at altitude.

Consult with your doctor before traveling to high altitude destinations.

Trip overview

  • Marvel at the mother of all Inca cities, magical Machu Picchu. Enjoy a guided tour of the ruins and free time to explore on your own.
  • Enjoy plenty of time in gorgeous Cusco, the perfect place to launch into further outdoor adventures, or simply relax and take in mountain views.
  • The floating reed islands of Uros on Lake Titicaca are astounding in concept, construction and history. Take a boat tour on the world's highest navigable lake and stay with a local family there.
  • Get acquainted with the beautiful churches and graceful boulevards of Quito, Ecuador's capital.
  • Get up close and personal with giant tortoises on Santa Cruz Island. These nearly extinct creatures are one of the greatest drawcards to the Galapagos .
  • This trip visits places that are at high altitude, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of age or physical health. Please see the Medical and health information section of the Essential Trip Information for more detail.
  • The facilities are basic at your homestay on Lake Titicaca. While creature comforts are few and far between while you're there, many travellers find the experience a rewarding one.
  • According to Machu Picchu visiting regulations, all visitors must follow a pre-determined route within the site. This route must be followed in one direction only, and once the guided visit commences exiting and re-entering the site is not permitted. Once the guided visit concludes, visitors must exit the site and personal exploration of Machu Picchu is not permitted. Please refer to the Itinerary for details.
  • This trip includes a 17 km hike (approximately 6 to 7 hours) on rocky terrain. We recommend bringing sturdy, comfortable hiking or trail shoes with good support. Please see Day 5 of the Itinerary for more information.
  • This trip involves a lot of travel by speedboat between the various Galapagos Islands. The rides can be quite bumpy at times, but the good news is that seasickness can often be managed with medication. Please consult a health professional to assess your suitability for such medication.
  • From June to August the water in the Galapagos can be rougher than usual. Consequently, travel times will be longer than usual. If you suffer from seasickness you may want to reconsider travelling during this period.
  • Proximity to the equator means the sun in the Galapagos is incredibly strong. Ensure you are prepared with sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. We also recommend a rash guard.
  • This trip includes snorkelling on multiple days. Confident swimming skills are required to take part. Alternative activities will not be available.
  • Many travellers express interest in diving in the Galapagos. We are now able to assist with booking this activity, but only through a provider that meets our internal safety policy. Speak to your agent at the time of booking for more information.
  • The Galapagos is a great place to switch off and take a break from your phone, as internet access can be patchy and wi-fi is not always available or reliable.
  • Hot water can be sporadic in some parts of the Galapagos, so there may be a few cold showers on the trip.

This morning after breakfast, you’ll catch an early flight to Cusco. Spend a little time acclimatising to the high altitude (3450 m). Then, get acquainted with this charming city and its intriguing blend of cultures on a leader-led walking tour. Check out some of Cusco's main attractions, as well as its lesser-known sights, such as the Qoricancha temple, San Pedro market, the main square, the 12 Angled Stone, Regocijo Square and San Blas Square. Your travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours.

To catch the early flight, you’ll be leaving the hotel at 5.30 am, so you’ll only have a basic breakfast of bread, butter, jam and coffee.

Travel by private bus through the Sacred Valley on the outskirts of Cusco today. This lush valley, known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Maize crops can be seen surrounding the river and covering the terraces that are carved high into the valley walls. You’ll visit a community in the valley to learn about local lifestyles and activities. If your visit coincides with market day, you can browse the stalls in search of hand-painted beads or warm ponchos. Visit the AMA Restaurant in Urubamba for afternoon tea – this café is dedicated to working with single mothers throughout the Sacred Valley, where there are few opportunities for childcare and employment. As all the ingredients used here are grown and purchased locally, the establishment also prides itself on its organic and locally focused practices. Enjoy a coffee, tea or juice with a slice of vegan beet cake or a homemade cookie and then board a train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes – nestled in the cloud forest at the foot of Machu Picchu.

  • Sacred Valley - Community visit & lunch
  • Sacred Valley - AMA Snack and Drink

This morning, you’ll take an early bus up the winding road to Machu Picchu. Welcome to one of the famed Seven Wonders of the World! This is your chance to decide for yourself whether Machu Picchu was built around 1440 as a country retreat for the Incan nobility or as an ancient astronomical observatory. Enjoy a guided visit of the incredible site, giving you ample time to take in the many temples, palaces and living quarters. After taking advantage of the seemingly endless photo opportunities, you’ll return to Cusco.

  • Machu Picchu - Entrance and guided tour

Due to Intrepid's internal safety policy, our leaders are specifically prohibited from recommending or assisting with booking climbs of Wayna Picchu.

The first bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu departs at 6:00 am. The estimated arrival time is between 6:30 to 7:00 am. The sun rises at Machu Picchu at approximately 5.30 am, therefore, it's not possible to be there in time for sunrise.

Today after breakfast, you can enjoy free time to relax, shop and explore Cusco's many sights. Maybe rest your weary legs at a cafe on Plaza de Armas or head to the San Pedro Market, where you can find vegetables, meats, local cheeses, chocolates, herbal medicines and many local handicrafts. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs or ingredients for a picnic. The market is also where many locals (and daring travellers) go to eat ‘mystery soups.’ Some may be just chicken – however, the most popular among the locals usually contain frogs or offal. For those looking for something active, why not try mountain biking in the hills surrounding Cusco?

  • Cusco - Rainbow Mountain Hike (Based on 4 participants) - USD105
  • Cusco - Full Day Via Ferrata & Zipline - USD95
  • Cusco - Full Day Stand Up Paddle Boarding (Based on 4 participants) - USD85
  • Cusco - Humantay Lake Hike (Based on 4 participants) - USD130
  • Sacred Valley - Mountain Biking (Price Based on 2 Participants) - USD170
  • Cusco - Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Hike (Based on 4 paticipants) - USD100

Before your trip comes to an end, why not pay a visit to Instagram’s most popular mountain – Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain . This activity involves climbing up to more than 5000 m above sea level in one day, which can lead to life-threatening altitude sickness. As such, your tour leaders are only able to assist you in booking this activity at the end of your stay in Cusco (when you’ll be better acclimatised) and when they have full control of safety aspects (such as transport, oxygen, emergency horses, adequate first aid kits and experienced guides). The price indicated is indicative only, and the final price will depend on the total number of travellers taking this activity. The price can range from as little as $56 (with 16 travellers) to $216 for two travellers.

This morning after breakfast, you’ll travel through the dramatic scenery of the high Altiplano to Puno – located on the shores of serene Lake Titicaca. At an altitude of 3800 m, Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake. Today includes a bit of a long drive, but it’s worth the first glimpse of immense Lake Titicaca, whose seemingly endless waters stretch into the horizon. Puno is a melting pot of Indigenous Aymara and Quechuan culture and traditional Andean customs, and it wears its traditions on its sleeve. If you're lucky, your trip will coincide with one of the many cultural festivals here. Ask your leader where you can get the best grilled trout tonight – a true local specialty perfect for dinner.

Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.

Puno continues to experience some occasional ongoing political unrest. With safety always our priority, on some departures, you may need to use alternative transportation to avoid affected areas. Your tour leader will advise of any specific changes to transport or the itinerary in this destination that needs to be put in place.

This morning, you’ll take a tour of the immense lake by motorboat, stopping at the floating Uros Islands that look like they could come from a Pixar or Studio Ghibli movie. Built by the Uros people to protect themselves from encroaching Inca forces hundreds of years ago, the islands are constructed from many layers of totora reeds that grow in the shallows of the lake. Get a closer look at contemporary life on the shores of the lake with a homestay in a local community. Help your host family with their daily activities, try out a few words in the Quechua language and maybe even join a local soccer game to make some friends on the makeshift pitch. Tonight, sit down and swap stories with your hosts, who will cook you a feast full of traditional Peruvian favourites.

  • Lake Titicaca - Boat tour & Homestay

Your homestay tonight is a traditional mud brick house. Rooms have beds and many blankets, and there are shared drop toilets, but no showers.

This morning after breakfast at your homestay, take a bus to Juliaca airport. Then, you’ll take an included flight back to Lima, where you’ll have a free night. Enjoy your last night of the trip with your fellow travellers and maybe head out to a final celebratory dinner.

Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 to 4 hours.

Today, transfer to the airport and board an included flight from Lima to Ecuador’s capital, Quito. Once you arrive, there are no activities planned until another group meeting held at 2 pm, where you’ll be briefed on the next stage of your South American adventure. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where it will take place. Quito is one of the most attractive cities in South America, sitting at an altitude of 2850 metres with a view of Volcan Pichincha on the horizon.

After the welcome meeting, join your local leader for a tour of Quito's historic center. Catch the Matro to the Parque de la Alameda and visit sites such as the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a famous neo-Gothic church known for the details of its façade that represent Galápagos tortoises, Andean condors, and Amazon alligators. You’ll also visit La Compania de Jesus, considered by many to be the most beautiful church in the Americas. It's claimed that seven tons of gold leaf cover the interior whilst the exterior is decorated with statues, busts, sculpted heads, and a jungle of carved leaves.

The tour will finish at San Francisco Square, where you’ll have the option to return to the hotel, or why not get to know your new travelling companions and dine in Quito’s Old Town – your leader will have plenty of recommendations!

  • Quito - Historic District Walking Tour
  • Quilotoa - Quilotoa Lagoon (Full day) - USD100
  • Quito - Papallacta Hot Springs (Full day) - USD70
  • Cotopaxi - National Park Hiking Tour - USD95
  • Quito - Urban Adventures: Legends and Culture Tour - USD50

As this is a combination trip, the travellers in your group and your group leader are likely to change today. There will be a welcome meeting today to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and meet travellers joining you. It’s important that you attend the meeting as your new leader will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

We recommend not partaking in any strenuous activity until you have time to gauge your reaction to the city’s high altitude, as some people experience mild symptoms of attitude sickness such as dizziness, shortness of breath and sleeplessness. Please see the 'Health' section in the Essential Trip Information for more details.

Welcome to San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands! As you start this trip on the Galapagos Islands you have two options for joining the group, as outlined in Special Information below. After joining up with your fellow travellers and your local naturalist guide, head to La Loberia where you'll put on snorkelling gear for the first time and go for a swim among sea lions, perhaps spotting sea turtles too. Return to town for a free evening. Perhaps head out with the group and enjoy some of the fresh seafood available.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Isla San Cristobal- Snorkeling in La Loberia (1.5 Hours)
  • Wetsuit (shortsleeve) hire for 5 days - USD60

As you start this trip on the Galapagos Islands you have two options for joining the group:

SUNDAY DEPARTURES: You can meet the others at San Cristobal Airport at 11.30 am. Your guide will be waiting in the arrival hall with an Intrepid sign for the passengers from Quito. FRIDAY & WEDNESDAY DEPARTURES: You can meet the others at San Cristobal Airport at 12.30 pm: Your guide will be waiting in the arrival hall with an Intrepid sign for the passengers from Quito.

Alternatively, you can meet them at the hotel (Casa de Nelly) when they arrive approximately 1 hour after the airport meeting time. Check in time for the hotel is 12 pm. If you're making your own way to the hotel, we recommend taking a short cab ride which will cost approximately USD 2. Please advise us where you plan to join this trip no later than 15 days prior to departure. If you are going to be late for either of these meeting times, please contact the local emergency number located in the Essential Trip Information.

Today begins with a 45-minute boat ride to Leon Dormido (Kicker Rock). On the way we might be able to spot nesting frigates and blue-footed boobies. There is also potential to swim among playful young sea lions. At Leon Dormido you can snorkel and look for sea turtles, manta rays and maybe the odd harmless Galapagos shark. Currents can be quite strong so it's important you are a confident swimmer to participate in this activity. If you have any concerns, please ensure you speak with your leader. Eat lunch on the boat then head to the Interpretation Center. Learn about the history of the 'Enchanted Islands' and the conservation projects which seek to preserve them. Continue to Frigatebird Hill (Cerro Tijeretas), which is located two kilometres from the Interpretation Center. It's quite a climb to the top, but well worth the amazing views of the bay. Return to town in the late afternoon or early evening.

  • San Cristobal - Excursion to Leon Dormido or Lobos Islands
  • Isla San Cristobal - Interpretation Center (45 minutes)
  • Isla San Cristobal - Cerro Tijeretas View Point (1 Hour)

If we are unable to visit Leon Dormido, alternative plans will be made to visit Isla Lobos, where sea lions, marine birds and marine iguanas are plentiful.

Take an early morning boat ride towards Isla Floreana, which should take about 2.5 hours. Along the way keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as dolphins and whales. On arrival to the island, snorkel in the clear blue waters and then break for lunch. Afterwards venture to a black-sand beach which belongs to the Witmers, decedents of some of the first settlers on the Galapagos. The town here, Puerto Velasco Ibarra, has about 150 residents and an intriguing history involving deaths, disappearances and murders. Later in the afternoon, wave goodbye to Floreana and continue to Isla Isabela (approximately 2 hours). From Isabela Port it's a short transfer to the hotel where we will spend the night (approximately 15 minutes).

  • Floreana - Snorkeling

Please note when you arrive at Isla Isabela, you'll need to pay a port fee of USD 10.

This morning, you’ll hop on a small Zodiac boat and cruise to Las Tintoreras (Shark Alley), looking out for blue-footed boobies and the famous Galapagos penguin. Take a short walk on this isolated islet and popular iguana nesting site, then snorkel in a calm inlet with colourful fish and winding underground lava tubes. This area is also frequented by green sea turtles that like to rest on the calm, sandy bottom. Return to Isla Isabela and visit the Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center, where you'll observe giant tortoises in all stages of development. After learning about the thousand turtles that are preparing for life here, you’ll head to a brackish lagoon to observe flamingos. Later today, take a kayak around the island before finding your sandy resting spot and soaking in your first Isabela sunset – arguably the most beautiful of all the islands!

  • Isla Isabela -Tintoreras or Shark Alley (2.5 Hours)
  • Isla Isabela - Flamingo lagoon visit (30 Minutes)
  • Isla Isabela - Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre (1 Hour)
  • Isla Isabela - Kayaking

Start your last day on Isla Isabela by heading towards the Sierra Negra Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the Galapagos and the second-largest crater in the world. Weather permitting, take a challenging hike of around 17 km up the rocky mountain, which takes about half a day. After the hike, make your way back to town for some free time to curl up with a book or venture down to the water for a relaxing swim before dinner.

  • Isla Isabela - Sierra Negra Volcano Hike (5-6 Hours)

Unfortunately, recycling isn't available on Isabela, so please take your plastic rubbish with you.

Please ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes that offer good support for the hike today. During the rainy season it can get quite muddy. There's an option to hire gumboots locally, should you wish to do so. During the hike it can get quite hot and there isn't much shade along the way so be sure to come prepared with your hat, sunscreen and plenty of water (we recommend 2 litres per person).

Jump aboard a private speedboat this morning and head to Isla Santa Cruz. When you arrive, leave your bags at the hotel and head to the Santa Cruz Highlands. Your first stop is a local farm, where giant tortoises roam the grounds. Here, you’ll have a cooking class with an expert chef who will teach you how to make the famed encebollado – a local soup considered one of the best in the world! This hearty dish uses slow-cooked albacore tuna and a savoury broth made of onions, cilantro and spices. The dish is traditionally served with yuca (a starchy root vegetable) and garnished with lime and green onions. Enjoy the fruits (or soups) of your labour for lunch, then spend some time wandering the grounds with the slow-paced residents. After lunch, you’ll visit an organic sugar cane farm run by a local family for a trapiche tour (a sugar cane mill used in artisanal sugar production). See how the family harvests and processes sugar cane as well as cacao and how it really is a community effort.

  • Santa Cruz Highlands Visit (3 Hours)
  • Santa Cruz – Organic Farm Tour
  • Santa Cruz – Encebollado Cooking Class

Take a morning walk in Tortuga Bay after breakfast. Along the way, keep an eye out for eagle rays, sea turtles and blue-footed boobies. After returning to town for lunch, you’ll pass through a local fish market on the way to The Galapagos Conservancy. Here, they help protect the Galapagos' unique biodiversity. Learn how The Intrepid Foundation supports the Galapagos Conservancy Women in Sustainable Entrepreneurship (WISE) program, which provides critical capital for sustainability initiatives and builds the entrepreneurial capacity of Galapagos women. After, head to the Charles Darwin Research Station – an international non-profit organisation that’s dedicated to the scientific research and conservation of the archipelago’s environment and biodiversity.

  • Isla Santa Cruz - Tortuga Bay walk
  • Isla Santa Cruz - The Galapagos Conservancy visit
  • Isla Santa Cruz - Charles Darwin Research Centre

We say goodbye to the Galapagos today and take a flight back to Quito (Please note the flight will make a stop in Guayaquil). You'll arrive back to Quito later afternoon. Perhaps head out for a final group dinner with your travel pals to celebrate your South American adventure.

This morning your adventure comes to an end in Quito. As there are no activities planned for the final day, you can depart the accommodation at any time. Because there is little time spent in Quito on this trip, we recommend staying a few extra days to see more of Ecuador. If you choose to stay on, we’d be happy to assist you with booking accommodation (subject to availability). Ecuador has some of the most beautiful churches in the Americas, including the lavish La Compania de Jesus, which is decorated with seven tonnes of gold. Not far from the capital, there are volcanoes, hot springs and Incan ruins to explore. Consider doing one of our one-day sightseeing tours of Quito, which can include the Old Town, markets and the city's culinary delights (see urbanadventures.com).

Intrepid supports these rules, which range from times of the day that a destination can be visited to the distance kept between people and wildlife. In particular, not removing anything from the environment (shells and corals, for example). All rules will be explained in more detail by your leader when you join the trip. Not adhering to these rules can lead to hefty fines for travellers and Intrepid losing the license to operate in the Galapagos Islands. Failure to adhere to the rules can result in your removal from the trip without a refund. For more information: http://www.galapagos.org/travel/travel/park-rules/

His first solo Harris-Walz campaign ticket event will take place on Tuesday. Walz will travel to Los Angeles, California, where he will deliver remarks at the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) 2024 convention, according to the campaign.

The event will start at 5 p.m. and is open to pre-credentialed media, the campaign said.

The campaign said Walz, a former union member himself, has a "strong record of standing up for unions and delivering for workers – from joining the picket line and passing the most pro-worker package of laws in Minnesota history, to guaranteeing Minnesota workers paid sick, medical, and family leave."

Afterward, Walz will launch "his first fundraising blitz for the Harris-Walz campaign with five events in five different states over just three days," the campaign said.

Walz’s cross-country swing will begin in California and end in New York, with stops in Colorado, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Besides Walz’s remarks at the AFSCME 46th International Convention in Los Angeles on Tuesday, the campaign seems to be limiting cameras on the vice-presidential candidate, as the rest of the events listed on his schedule for the week will be covered by an "editorial print pooler."

That includes his remarks at a Harris-Walz campaign reception in Newport Beach, California , scheduled for later Tuesday evening.

According to a copy of an invitation to the Newport Beach fundraiser obtained by Fox News, tickets start at $1,000 to get through the door and have ticket tiers all the way up to $100,000.

On Wednesday, Walz is scheduled to speak at campaign receptions in Denver, Colorado, and then later in Boston, Massachusetts. The vice-presidential candidate will deliver remarks Thursday at campaign receptions in Newport, Rhode Island, before concluding his fundraising blitz in Southampton, New York.

His headline tour comes after Walz and Democratic presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris , visited key battlegrounds, including Michigan and Wisconsin, last week.

Walz’s stop in California comes after Harris returned to the birthplace of her political career, San Francisco, on Sunday, where she attempted to appeal to tech leaders at a campaign event attended by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., that raised $13 million.

In the first 24 hours after announcing Walz as her vice presidential pick, the Harris campaign reported raising $36 million.

peru island tours

I went to Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas. It wasn't for me, but I can see why cruise-goers love it.

  • Royal Caribbean has a private island in the Bahamas called Perfect Day at CocoCay.
  • The island gives cruise guests a combination of thrilling activities and relaxing beaches.
  • I went for the first time in 2022. While I found it fun, I longed for a more authentic port stop.

Insider Today

Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean's 125-acre private island in the Bahamas. It's filled with thrilling adventures and relaxing beaches for vacationers. Here, you'll find overwater cabanas, quiet places to chill, and shorelines bumping party music. Adrenaline seekers will find gigantic waterslides, zip lines, and hot air balloon rides.

I went to CocoCay during my first cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in May 2022. It felt like an extension of the ship, but I longed for a more authentic Bahamian experience.

Welcome to Perfect Day at CocoCay: Royal Caribbean's 125-acre private island in the Bahamas. It's filled with thrilling adventures and relaxing beaches for vacationers.

peru island tours

Royal Caribbean isn't the only cruise line with a private island in the Bahamas. Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, and Princess Cruises each have their own Bahamian paradise, according to Cruise Critic .

CocoCay is only accessible to cruisers on board Royal Caribbean ships.

peru island tours

Many Royal Caribbean cruise itineraries include a stop here.

CocoCay was the final stop of a seven-night cruise starting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The ship also stopped in Roatán, Honduras, and Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico.

peru island tours

Admiral Cruises, a company Royal Caribbean acquired in 1988, leased the island until 2050 in 1985, according to Royal Caribbean . In 2019, the island got a $250 million makeover .

The only people who live on CocoCay are Royal Caribbean employees, according to the cruise line.

peru island tours

Two Royal Caribbean ships can dock at CocoCay at the same time. Here's what it's like to visit.

As Royal Caribbean guests step onto the island, a band greets them with Caribbean tunes.

peru island tours

I thought the band set the relaxed, Caribbean vibe as I walked off the dock.

Most attractions on the island are complimentary to cruise guests, including the food and many of the pools and beaches.

peru island tours

Guests could munch on burgers, hot dogs, salads, and cookies on the island.

But the exciting features tend to cost extra, like the waterpark.

peru island tours

Other excursions like zip-lining, snorkeling, and hot-air balloon rides also incurred an additional price.

There are tons of maps and signs to direct guests, as well as three color-coded paths.

peru island tours

Green leads to Chill Island, orange leads to Oasis Lagoon, and blue leads to Thrill Waterpark.

To get around, walk or ride a free tram to different parts of the island.

peru island tours

I thought the tram was a nice touch, but I preferred getting around on foot.

If you're the type of vacationer who just wants to relax, head to Chill Island, which is free to access.

peru island tours

Chill Island is the place for a laid-back day on a lounge chair in the sand. It has the quietest beach on CocoCay, with no music. It's full of umbrellas and chairs, which are all free to use.

You will surely find a comfortable spot.

peru island tours

According to Royal Caribbean , the island has 6,000 lounge chairs and 12,000 umbrellas.

If you want to be extra chill, you can rent a daybed on the beach.

There are also over-the-water cabanas.

peru island tours

These floating cabanas cost $1,000 to rent, according to the cruise line .

Of course, there is a swim-up bar offshore.

peru island tours

Luckily, your cruise ship drink package extends to CocoCay.

For a more active beach day, check out South Beach on the other side of the island.

peru island tours

Here, you'll find plenty of outdoor activities, like basketball, volleyball, and even life-size billiards.

Both beaches offer free amenities that make your day easier and more enjoyable ...

peru island tours

This includes lockers for your change of clothes and valuables.

... like free life vests for your safety.

peru island tours

This could be especially useful for families traveling with kids.

Both beaches have snorkeling shacks where I was able to rent gear for $37.

peru island tours

I went snorkeling at Chill Island and saw some pretty cool fish.

The beaches have several shops that sell souvenirs.

peru island tours

I spotted T-shirts and essentials like sunscreen for sale.

If you prefer the pool over the beach, head to Oasis Lagoon.

peru island tours

It is home to the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, according to the cruise line .

The pool features several inviting coves and upbeat music.

peru island tours

There's also a swim-up bar.

Next to Oasis Lagoon is Splashaway Bay, a water playground for children.

peru island tours

The playground looks just like the Splashaway Bay found on Royal Caribbean ships. It is free for guests.

Next door is Thrill Waterpark, where you'll find the waterslides for the "big kids."

peru island tours

This area of the island hosts all the waterslides and the wave pool. Access can cost up to $140.

Thrill-seekers also gravitate toward the hot air balloon ride, which costs up to $84 per person and reaches 450 feet into the air.

peru island tours

Unfortunately, the winds were too high for the balloon to be used when I visited.

Back on the ship, I quickly took in a panoramic view of CocoCay before departing.

peru island tours

In the distance, I could see some of the other 700 Bahamian islands, and I wondered what it would be like to visit them.

While I had a fun and relaxing day at CocoCay, it felt more like an extension of the cruise ship than a visit to a foreign country.

peru island tours

Since I'm not into the thrills of waterslides and zip lines, I would have rather spent time on a Bahamian island where I could have learned more about the culture.
