Norwegian Ships by Size [2024] with Comparison Chart

By jeremy camosse dec 2022.

Norwegian Ships by Size - from biggest to smallest. You'll find all of NCL's ships stacked up against each other. Do you prefer the big or small ships?

Below you'll find a complete list of Norwegian Ships by Size . From their smallest, active ship (NCL Spirit) to the largest Norwegian cruise ship (and recently launched), the NCL Encore. You'll find a sizable difference between NCL's largest and the smallest ships in their fleet. In fact, the difference is over 2x the gross tonnage!

We've created a new post to see how these ships rank on a global scale. Norwegian has only one ship that made the list of 20 Largest Cruise Ships in the World . Click to find out which vessel made it and where it ranks. There, we also analyze Norwegian's average ship size versus all other lines!

First, a little clarification is needed before viewing our sizing chart. We're measuring Norwegian ships size using the metric, "Gross Tonnage." This always causes a bit of confusion amongst our community members. It's not simply "weight" that determines this size measurement. The definition is technical and boring, but we'll provide it anyway.

GROSS TONNAGE

A nonlinear measure of a ship's overall internal volume. Gross tonnage is calculated based on the moulded volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship and is used to determine things such as a ship's manning regulations, safety rules, registration fees, and port dues, whereas the older gross register tonnage is a measure of the volume of only certain enclosed spaces.

Are you still awake? Good. So why do we use this measurement to determine Norwegian Ships Size? As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, it's the standard across this cruise line and all others. Every passenger cruise ship will have this measurement . That makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, line and more.

Additionally, you'll find a number of other stats in our ship list. These include ship length, beam, draft, passenger count, and a few others.

Ok, we're done with today's maritime measurement course. Here's the good stuff.

See our chart above for everything in the middle.

Often we're asked if size affects price. The cost of a Norwegian cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest NCL ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary and often the ship age. Newer ships tend to be more expensive to sail.

We hope that the above list of Norwegian Cruise Ships by size help you to find your ideal ship.

NCL Sky - one of the best value cruise ships

Is Bigger Better? How Do You Like To Cruise?

You better believe it, the Norwegian Cruise Line’s largest ships are loaded with all the bells and whistles. We’re talking multiple pools, waterslides, go-kart tracks, and more deck-top fun than you could shake a stick at. And when it comes to dining, drinking, and entertainment, these bad boys have got it all, with more restaurants, bars, and showrooms than you can count. Plus, their spas and casinos are the biggest in the entire Norwegian fleet, and they’ve got the most cabins and suites with a huge variety of options to choose from. These ships are the real deal, no doubt about it.

With space for over 4,000 guests, Norwegian Cruise Line boasts some of the largest ships in the industry, rivalling even the most extravagant land resorts. If you subscribe to the notion that bigger is always better, then these ships are right up your alley. Go big or go home, right?

Norwegian Cruise Line isn’t all about massive ships. They also have a fleet of smaller cruise ships that offer a more intimate experience for around 2,000 passengers. These ships are half the size of their biggest ones and offer a more low-key vibe with fewer activities and entertainment options. Norwegian Cruise Ships by Size, Age and Class (Updated 2022)

Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Cruise Line has an active fleet of seventeen ships with a further two ships due in 2022-23 ( Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva ) plus, a further four more ships due between 2024-27.

The fleet is primarily based in the United States and sails frequently from the ports of Miami and Port Canaveral. However, they do also sail from New York.

Additional sailings take place throughout Europe, including Southampton.

In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line or NCL as it is more commonly known amongst cruisers started off back in 1966. However, it didn’t actually cruise from Norway originally!

It was founded by two men, Knut Kloster and perhaps more famously known now, Ted Arison (of Carnival Cruise Line ).

Their first vessel Sunward , a modified car ferry which also provided passenger services operated between the ports of Southampton and Gibraltar. It wasn’t long after that that Ted Arison left to found Carnival Cruise Line and Knut Kloster grew Norwegian Cruise Line to what it is today.

It wasn’t until 1971 that Norwegian Cruise Line had its first custom-built cruise ship, Starward delivered into service. Like the original Sunward the two ships also had car-carrying capacity, albeit via a well-concealed stern (rear) door system.

Fast forward to 2000 and NCL was sold to Star Cruises (a subsidiary of Genting Hong Kong) – this lasted until 2007 when Star Cruises sold 50% to an investment management company ( Apollo Management ) and then in 2013 the company reorganized again to become Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

Since 2013, the company has acquired two further cruise brands ( Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ) and continues to grow the NCL fleet with several new builds announced for the current decade.

Norwegian Cruise Line Frequently Asked Questions

Is norwegian cruise line going to survive.

Whilst NCL has been one of the slowest to return to service (with Norwegian Getaway still not due back in service until November 2022) the cruise line has taken on additional debt to manage the day-to-day operations of the company and therefore it is more than likely to stay around!

What is the largest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

Norwegian Encore is currently the largest NCL ship at 169,116 GRT and able to carry 3,998 passengers.

What is the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

The smallest NCL ship is Norwegian Spirit at 75,904 GRT and able to carry 2,018 passengers – half of the largest ships in the fleet.

Which Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the newest?

Norwegian Prima will be the newest ship to join the fleet in August 2022.

Which Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the oldest?

Norwegian Spirit is the oldest ship in the fleet. Which entered service in 1998 and was last refurbished in 2020.

Is Norwegian Cruise Line owned by Royal Caribbean?

No. It is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. They also own luxury brands Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all norwegian cruise ships new builds.

Actually, NCL has possibly one of the most complicated fleets as a good majority of their ships are fairly old (compared to some of the other cruise lines).

Norwegian Sky for example was originally constructed as Costa Olympia , but was actually sold during construction to NCL and sailed as Pride of Aloha from 2004-2008.

Both Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn were both originally ordered for Star Cruises ( Superstar Libra and Superstar Scorpio respectively) but ended up being transferred to NCL before they launched.

Norwegian Spirit was built as SuperStar Leo for Star Cruises and sailed with them from 1998 until 2004 when she transferred to NCL and was renamed.

Norwegian Jade was previously named Pride of Hawaii for NCL America. She entered service in 2006 and was transferred to NCL, renamed and has been sailing for them since 2008.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

Final thoughts.

Norwegian Cruise Line is a large cruise line in the industry, but has been overtaken by many others ( Carnival Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean to name just two) – however, NCL has been groundbreaking when it comes to bringing new ideas to the cruise industry.

They were the first to offer a more casual-relaxed dining approach, with any-time dining instead of the traditional two-set timed dining system that other lines previously (and still) use.

Thanks to the SS Norway (which NCL acquired in 1979 – then named France ), Norwegian rebuilt the liner as a cruise ship and added vast amounts of extra space for entertaining cruise passengers – something that set the boom in large cruise ships in the industry going.

These days, Norwegian is a very popular cruise line that still brings out a number of ‘firsts’ over other lines (such as Go-Karting at sea), and whilst their fleet is on the slightly older side, they will have some much newer and larger vessels being delivered over the next few years.

Norwegian Cruise Line ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Are you looking for the most megaresort-like, activity-packed Norwegian Cruise Line ships at sea? If so, you’ll want to get on one of the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

The biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are, almost by definition, the Norwegian Cruise Line ships with the most “stuff” — the most pools, waterslides and other deck-top attractions ( even go-kart tracks ), as well as the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms. They have the biggest spas and casinos among vessels in the Norwegian fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in suite and cabin types.

With room for 4,000 or more passengers, the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are among the most massive resorts you’ll find at sea from any cruise line and are comparable to some of the biggest resorts on land, too. If you’re in the “bigger is better” camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Norwegian Cruise Line ships for you.

Still, Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t just operate giant vessels. The world’s fourth-biggest cruise line also has quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or so people and provide a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just half the size of Norwegian Cruise Line’s biggest ships. These are vessels that, notably, have fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest Norwegian cruise ships.

The smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are best for vacationers who like a less crowded, more intimate resort experience.

What is the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

The biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the 4-year-old Norwegian Encore . While not quite as big as the biggest ships from rival lines Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line , Norwegian Encore still is firmly in the pantheon of the world’s cruising giants.

At 169,116 tons, Norwegian Encore is bigger than all but 21 other cruise ships in the world, 15 of which are operated by the three lines mentioned above. It regularly sails with more than 4,000 passengers on board.

The biggest of four vessels in Norwegian’s Breakaway-Plus class of ships, Norwegian Encore is the Norwegian ship most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. It’s home to one of the biggest go-kart tracks on a cruise ship, the biggest laser tag area on a Norwegian ship and an unusually large virtual reality zone called Galaxy Pavilion, to name a few of its biggest attractions. There’s also plenty of room to spare for multiple pools, waterslides and a kiddie splash zone.

Additionally, Norwegian Encore offers big-name shows in big, state-of-the-art theaters; a sprawling spa; a casino that fills half a deck; a dedicated children’s play zone; and more than 2,000 rooms.

What is the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

The smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship is Norwegian Spirit. At 75,904 gross tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of Norwegian Encore, the line’s biggest ship. It carries just 1,966 passengers — more than 2,000 fewer than Norwegian Encore.

Unveiled in 1998, Norwegian Spirit is not only the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship but also the oldest ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. At 25 years old, it’s likely to be phased out of the Norwegian fleet in the coming years.

Norwegian Spirit, notably, was not built for Norwegian Cruise Line but for Asia-based Star Cruises. Its original name was SuperStar Leo. It was transferred to Norwegian and renamed in 2004.

In part because of its smaller size, Norwegian Spirit offers fewer venues and attractions than newer Norwegian vessels, but it still offers a lot. In all, you’ll find 13 food outlets on Norwegian Spirit, including two main restaurants, a casual buffet eatery, and versions of the line’s signature Cagney’s Steakhouse and French eatery Le Bistro. There are more than half a dozen bars and cafes.

Deck-top attractions on Norwegian Spirit include several pools, whirlpools, waterslides, a basketball court and a jogging track. The ship also has a casino, spa, nightclub and theater.

Are bigger Norwegian Cruise Line ships coming?

The answer isn’t clear. Norwegian Cruise Line currently has five new cruise ships on order, and all were originally designed to be smaller than the biggest Norwegian ships currently at sea. However, Norwegian recently announced that some of the ships will be redesigned to be as much as 20% bigger .

Depending on how much bigger Norwegian makes these ships, they might become the biggest ships in the Norwegian fleet.

The five ships on order for Norwegian are all sister ships to the recently unveiled Norwegian Prima, which is Norwegian’s eighth biggest ship. The first of the five ships, Norwegian Viva, is scheduled to begin sailing in August 2023 with the four other new vessels arriving between 2025 and 2028.

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

The five new ships are all part of what Norwegian is calling the Prima class of ships. The first ship in the series, Norwegian Prima, measures 143,535 gross tons, which is about 15% smaller than Norwegian Encore, Norwegian’s biggest ship.

The second ship in the Prima-class series will be similar in size to Norwegian Prima, while the last four ships in the series, as noted, are being redesigned to be bigger than the first two ships in the series.

Norwegian executives said the smaller size of the new Prima-class ships would give the line more options in designing itineraries, as the vessels would be able to access smaller ports around the world than some of the bigger Norwegian ships can.

What’s the difference between bigger and smaller Norwegian Cruise Line ships?

To put it simply: The biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than the line’s older vessels.

On Norwegian’s giant Breakaway-Plus-class vessels (Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape), for instance, you’ll find multiple pools, waterslides, a kiddie splash zone and — on most of the ships — a sprawling go-kart racing track. Each of the vessels also offers Broadway shows in giant theaters; sprawling spas; large casinos; expansive children’s play zones; and more than 2,000 rooms.

Additionally, two of the biggest ships in the series, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, have what may be the largest and coolest gaming and virtual reality zones at sea.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian ship

Norwegian’s smaller ships, by contrast, lack many of the above features. Because of their smaller size, they have a much more intimate feel, at least when compared to the biggest cruise ships at Norwegian and other mass-market lines, and they hold far fewer people. While Breakaway-Plus-class ships can hold around 4,000 passengers, based on double occupancy, the line’s smallest vessels are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Norwegian’s smallest ships are a good choice for vacationers who aren’t eager to travel with the huge crowds that are common on the world’s biggest cruise ships. They appeal to a subset of Norwegian fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don’t mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Related: Don’t miss out on these Norwegian loyalty perks

Additionally, because of their size, the smallest ships at Norwegian are able to operate itineraries to places that aren’t as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Norwegian Encore.

This major cruise line operator just announced its biggest ship order ever

One of the world’s leading cruise operators unveiled its biggest ship order ever on Monday.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. will take delivery of eight ships between 2026 and 2036 across its three brands.

Norwegian Cruise Line will welcome four ships in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, each with a capacity of close to 5,000 guests. The additions are subject to financing.

The vessels will follow the line’s previously announced Prima-Plus class vessels.

The upscale Oceania Cruises will take delivery of two 1,450-guest ships in 2027 and 2029, and luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises will add two ships in 2026 and 2029, each accommodating 850 passengers.

"This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” Harry Sommer, the company’s president and CEO, said in a news release . “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

Specifics about the ships’ accommodations and amenities will be announced “in the coming months,” according to the release.

The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. The pier will be able to accommodate two large ships at once.

Ncl Norwegian Prima Ship

The newest NCL ships sailing are Prima Class Ships, Norwegian Prima and Viva. NCL Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy preceded her. These Breakaway Plus class ships offer excellent facilities such as race tracks at sea, Broadway shows, and boardwalks lined with bars and restaurants overlooking the sea.

Which Is NLC’s Biggest Ship?

Norwegian Encore is Norwegian Cruise Line’s Biggest Cruise Ship as of 2019 at a whopping 169,116 tons an holding 3998 passengers and 1735 crew which is a passenger ratio of 2.3 passengers per crew member.

Her sister, Norwegian Bliss, closely follows this at 168,028 tons. The newer ships Prima and Viva are smaller and hold fewer guests; this is a conscious effort by NCL to maintain service on their ships; Prima holds 3215 guests with 1388 crew and a passenger-to-crew ratio of 2.3.

Which IS NCL’s Smallest Ship?

Ncl Norwegian Spirit Ship

Norwegian Spirit is NCL’s smallest ship at 175,904 tons, holding 2018 passengers and 912 crew. However, after a recent renovation, I am dying to try out all the styles and classes of the larger vessels.

Norwegian Cruise Line Has A Fabulous Selection of Ships For Cruisers

Norwegian Cruise Line has spent fortunes renovating its fleet in recent years, thus you can expect the same level of style and decor on many of their ships. The decision is based in itinerary, if you like the large ship experience offering facilities such as laser quest and racing tracks. Or indeed the more laid back feel of smaller cruise ships.

Plan ahead to 2025 with these can't-miss destinations with Norwegian Cruise Line

Erica Silverstein

Make 2025 the year you realize your travel dream. Maybe that's flying in a helicopter to an Alaskan glacier where you can ride on a dogsled pulled by adorable huskies. Or, perhaps it's sipping wine at vineyards across Italy, Spain and France. Your bucket list might simply include visits to new countries across the globe, such as Japan, New Zealand or Thailand, or be as specific as watching the sun set over Hawaii's Haleakala Crater or snorkeling amid brightly colored coral and fish in Bonaire's Marine Park.

You could put in a lot of time and effort to create the perfect travel itinerary, spending hours researching hotels and tour operators. Or, you could book a Norwegian Cruise Line sailing, letting the line's travel planners do the heavy lifting while you choose the prearranged experiences you're most excited to try.

An NCL cruise makes travel planning easy. Norwegian Cruise Line ships sail to a variety of destinations, from tried-and-true vacation hot spots in the Caribbean to far-flung destinations in Asia. You don't have to worry about how to get from Greece to Turkey or from Sydney to Melbourne, Australia; the ship will take you there. There are no train tickets to buy or ferry schedules to puzzle out.

Once you've decided where to go, you can craft that experience to your preference with the line's shore excursions. A Norwegian cruise is not one-size-fits-all; you can customize your vacation to your liking. In Alaska, you can choose to go kayaking, sample local food and beer, take a wildlife cruise, or learn about totem poles. In Italy, you could take a pasta-making class, immerse yourself in Florence's art museums, drink wine at a Tuscan castle or get your steps in climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

No matter how you wish to spend your time ashore, NCL has already crafted excursions to give you the best day out. And did we mention that some of those tours will be subsidized by Norwegian, thanks to excursion credits on every cruise? That's in addition to the line's other inclusive Free at Sea offerings , such as unlimited open bar and Wi-Fi and specialty dining credits.

NCL has always been a leader in letting guests shape their own cruise experience, and that philosophy applies to the ship as well. You won't be told when to eat (or forced to dine with strangers), what to wear (no ties and jackets required) or how to spend your time on board.

Spend your days at sea pampering yourself at your ship's expansive spa, racing your family and friends around an onboard go-kart track, winning big at the casino or watching award-winning shows in a grand theater. With dozens of dining options covering a range of cuisines, you don't have to agonize about making dinner reservations in a foreign language.

With NCL handling all the logistics and providing you with tons of entertainment options on board and ashore, the only thing left for you to do is choose where to go. Here are six can't-miss destinations you can sail to with Norwegian Cruise Line.

norwegian cruise lines biggest ship

A cruise is one of the best ways to see Alaska, since a ship can take you to places where the roads don't reach. See nature at its finest (glaciers and salmon and bears — oh my!) and learn about the Native peoples who have long inhabited this northerly region.

You can cruise to Alaska nearly any time you'd like because Norwegian Cruise Line has the longest Alaska cruise season of all the big-ship lines. Whether you want to take the kids for a summer vacation, avoid the crowds on an early-season sailing or chase the northern lights on an October cruise, Norwegian has a ship ready for you from April into October.

Four ships will be dedicated to Alaska in 2025, and all guarantee glacier views. Some cruises explore the limited-access Glacier Bay National Park, while others take you to Hubbard or Dawes Glacier. If you've never heard the thunderous sound of a glacier calving or photographed ice that is as blue as the sky, these scenic cruise days will be a highlight.

NCL is all about choice, and four ships give the line Alaska itinerary variety. Big ships Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore sail seven-night cruises out of the easily accessible Seattle home port and are perfect for families looking for all the whiz-bang onboard attractions, such as go-kart tracks, laser tag and a water park. (Yes, it can be warm enough in Alaska to use the ship's pools!)

Norwegian Joy offers slightly longer nine- and 10-night sailings from Alaska, for travelers who want to maximize their time up north. These cruises visit five Alaska ports and Victoria, British Columbia, and include a glacier-viewing day.

Still not enough Alaska for you? Norwegian Jade does things differently, sailing one-way cruises between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Whittier, Alaska (one of the ports closest to Anchorage). Because your cruise starts or ends in Alaska, you have the freedom to tack on an extended land stay to venture into the state's interior.

You could put in all the work to arrange the trip yourself, but you can save yourself the trouble and let Norwegian plan it for you. Its 11- to 14-night cruisetours combine a cruise with bus and train travel to places like Denali National Park, Fairbanks, Seward and Anchorage. Meet adorable sled dogs and their mushers, search for bears and moose on a Denali wilderness tour, or take a once-in-a-lifetime flightseeing tour by the tallest peak in North America.

Got even more time on your hands? Set aside a little more than two weeks to cruise Alaska and also Hawaii or Japan on one lengthy Norwegian Sun cruise.

norwegian cruise lines biggest ship

You can never get enough of Europe. From the sun-warmed Greek islands to the waterfall-lined Scandinavian fjords and the historic and culture-rich cities along the Mediterranean, you can't go wrong with a visit in 2025, whether it's your first or 10th trip across the pond. No matter where you want to go, NCL has a cruise for you with nine ships sailing 295 different itineraries calling in 160 individual ports.

Norwegian's newest and most upscale ships, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima , make Europe their spring-through-fall home — and their sophisticated onboard spaces and culinary delights fit perfectly with their cosmopolitan home bases. In 2025, Norwegian Viva will follow the sun to the Greek islands and Turkey, while Norwegian Prima heads north to Iceland, Norway and the bustling cities of the Baltic.

Intrigued by Iceland? Norwegian is the only cruise line sailing round-trip from Reykjavik to Iceland and Greenland with its smaller ship, Norwegian Star.

Families should also consider big ships like Norwegian Breakaway, which offers onboard fun like a water park and ropes course while visiting Mediterranean highlights in Italy, France, Spain and Greece.

No matter where in Europe you choose to go in 2025, Norwegian Cruise Line will make your time there count. Its destination-intensive itineraries often feature a different city every day, so you can see as much as possible during your time abroad. If you're an unstoppable explorer, look for long days and late departures in ports such as Santorini, Greece, or overnights in marquee destinations, such as Florence, Italy; Copenhagen; Stockholm; and Reykjavik.

For a local flair, you'll want to book one of NCL's Go Local tours, which lean into cultural experiences and activities that let you see how locals live. Perhaps you'll take a tour of one of Europe's oldest markets in Livorno, Italy, enjoying regional treats, or learn about fishing techniques and barbecuing sardines in Pedregalejo, Spain (near Malaga).

If the bean counter in your family is complaining about the cost to fly to Europe to catch your cruise, gently remind them that Norwegian Cruise Line really does think of everything. Its Free at Sea promotion often includes free airfare for the second guest on your reservation.

It's no surprise that Norwegian will send a brand-new ship to the Caribbean in 2025; after all, the islands are the quintessential cruise destination. Norwegian Aqua is made for tropical sailings with Aqua Slidecoaster (its hybrid waterslide-roller coaster), onboard beach club and more outdoor spaces for enjoying sea breezes and island views.

Aqua is just one of 15 NCL cruise ships sailing through the Bahamas and Caribbean in 2025. With nine departure ports (including seven in the continental U.S. for easy access) and more than 70 different itineraries, Norwegian can offer something for everyone.

Travelers short on time and money can get away with two-night cruises to the Bahamas, families can sail attraction-laden megaships like Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, and retirees with time on their hands can truly relax with two-week voyages to the farthest reaches of the Caribbean or through the Panama Canal.

Do you want to feel like a celebrity hanging out in the Virgin Islands, or do you want to dive into the ancient cultures (and reef-filled waters) of Central America? Whether you prefer to beach it up in the Bahamas, venture out to the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) or sample local rum in Puerto Rico or Jamaica, a Norwegian Cruise Line ship is going your way.

If you're looking for an epic beach day, NCL offers not one, but two private islands exclusive to its cruise guests: Great Stirrup Caye in the Bahamas and Harvest Caye off the coast of Belize. Here, you can plop down on a complimentary lounge chair and only get up to grab a bite or cool down in the clear Caribbean waters, or you can get your adrenaline pumping with a zip line or parasail flight.

The Caribbean is a great vacation choice for everyone — including couples, solo travelers and groups of friends — but we'd be remiss if we didn't point out the specific attractions of a Caribbean cruise vacation for families. Onboard attractions like water parks, ropes courses, kids and teens clubs, and twisting multideck slides keep the youngest cruisers happy.

Norwegian Cruise Line often offers deals with free third and fourth fares, perfect for parents looking to save by booking one cabin for their entire family. Or perhaps a vacation at sea is the time to splurge on a family suite. With plenty of itineraries lining up with school breaks, Norwegian is primed to offer families a beach vacation they won't quickly forget.

If 2025 is your year for bucket list travel, Norwegian Cruise Line can take you to destinations across Asia that you've always wanted to see. One cruise can easily check off multiple countries on your wishlist.

A cruise is also one of the best ways to explore Asia and the Pacific islands if you find the language barrier and foreign culture intimidating. Think of the cruise line as a knowledgeable tour guide ready to recommend the best places to go, things to see and food to eat, all while taking the stress out of vacation planning in a far-flung destination.

Next year, NCL will base more ships than ever before in Asia, with three ships — Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Spirit — deployed to the region. The cruise line offers extensive time in port, with port calls averaging 10 hours in length and overnight stays in 11 ports, including Osaka, Japan; Hong Kong; and Bali, Indonesia.

Norwegian Sun will weave in and out of the Pacific islands in 2025, with visits to Tahiti and French Polynesia, Fiji, Indonesia and Malaysia. Norwegian Sky will explore Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Japan in the early part of the year, including cruisetours with multiday stays in Singapore. Norwegian Spirit will also spend time in Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam before moving on to Japan, Taiwan and Korea itineraries.

Sailing lengths of 10 to 19 nights can accommodate professionals who need to get back to their desks as well as travelers with time to immerse themselves in a new destination. Plus, the ship's range of cabins , from windowless inside rooms to expansive suites, means a bucket list trip can fit into a wide range of vacation budgets.

norwegian cruise lines biggest ship

Asia isn't the only far-flung bucket list destination Norwegian Cruise Line can take you to. If you've been dreaming of the Land of Oz, a Norwegian cruise is a great way to hit all the hot spots in Australia and New Zealand without worrying about how to cross the long distances between major cities.

Norwegian Sun makes its debut Down Under in 2025 (technically, it will arrive in late December 2024). The ship will sail a selection of 12- to 15-night voyages between Australia and New Zealand through March 2025. Among the options are new NCL itineraries to the Great Barrier Reef and South Pacific as the ship sails between Cairns, Australia, and Lautoka, Fiji. You can visit destinations in Australia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.

Norwegian Spirit will take over the route at the end of 2025, so if you're hoping to spend Christmas and New Year's 2025 on a 14-night tour of Australia and New Zealand, that will be your ship. Imagine it: Not only will you skip out on two weeks of North American winter, but you'll visit Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania and multiple ports on New Zealand's North and South islands, all with just one round-trip transpacific flight and no long drives or pricey intercity flights.

norwegian cruise lines biggest ship

No roundup of NCL's top destinations is complete without mentioning Hawaii. The cruise line is king in Hawaii, where it's the only big-ship line to offer year-round, seven-night, interisland itineraries on its U.S.-flagged ship, Pride of America. All the other foreign-flagged cruise ships must include a foreign port (usually Canada or Mexico) in their itineraries, necessitating at least one ocean crossing on each itinerary.

Most working professionals and families don't have time for leisurely ocean voyages with multiple days in a row at sea. They want what NCL's got — a weeklong trip packed with visits to five ports on four islands, including overnights in Kauai and Maui. Throw in an included scenic cruise of the Napali coast aboard the ship, and the value proposition is crystal clear.

Norwegian brings authentic local culture on board with hula dancing lessons, lei making workshops and even a Hawaiian language class. On shore, you'll have time to attend an evening luau; get up close to active and dormant volcanoes; learn to surf, snorkel and dive among colorful coral and sealife; and relax on the gorgeous beaches the islands are famous for.

If you can't get enough of Hawaii, NCL offers three-night land-based add-ons, so you can spend more time in Oahu, visiting Pearl Harbor, the Dole Plantation, Polynesian Cultural Center and Kualoa Ranch.

Bottom line

It's no secret that cruises have become so popular that the best itineraries are selling out far in advance. If you want to nab your preferred cabin or suite on an NCL cruise to one of these top destinations, you'll want to start planning your 2025 vacation now. These days, the early bird will likely get a better fare, too.

So whether your 2025 travel plans feature a tropical getaway in the Caribbean, a natured-based foray into Alaska, or cultural tour of Europe or Asia, you'll want to get that cruise fare locked in now. Then you can spend a year crafting your perfect days ashore, prioritizing the onboard restaurants and attractions you want to experience most, and simply dreaming of your upcoming Norwegian Cruise Line vacation.

  • July 31, 2024

Norwegian Escape in the Azores

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2024 and provided guidance for the third quarter and full year 2024.

Second Quarter 2024 Highlights

  • Generated record second quarter total revenue of $2.4 billion, an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2023 on 4% capacity growth, with GAAP net income of $163.4 million, or EPS of $0.35. Performance was driven by strong revenue growth and continued focus on cost reductions and efficiencies.
  • Adjusted EBITDA grew 14% to $587.7 million compared to $514.8 million for the same period of 2023 and above guidance of $555 million. Adjusted EPS grew 33% to $0.40, which compares to $0.30 in the second quarter of 2023, exceeding guidance of $0.32. 1
  • The Company’s sustained focus on margin enhancement drove another quarter of improvement in operating costs. Gross Cruise Costs per Capacity Day was approximately $315 for the quarter. Adjusted Net Cruise Costs excluding Fuel per Capacity Day was approximately $163 on an as reported and Constant Currency basis, better than guidance, and flat year-over-year when excluding the expected ~$9 impact of the incremental Dry-docks and the related reduction in Capacity Days.
  • Occupancy was 105.9% for the quarter, slightly above guidance, and total revenue per Passenger Cruise Day increased approximately 2%, compared to second quarter 2023.
  • Gross margin per Capacity Day was up 7% versus 2023 on an as reported and Constant Currency basis. Net Yield growth beat guidance by 200 basis points, increasing over prior year by approximately 6.3% on an as reported and Constant Currency basis due to strong close-in demand and onboard revenue performance.
  • Total debt was $13.4 billion. Net Leverage was 5.9x for the 12-months ended June 30, 2024, achieving year-end goal of reducing Net Leverage by ~1.5x from December 31, 2023 6-months early.
  • Announced Charting the Course 2026 targets at May 2024 Investor Day, detailing a bold new vision to “Vacation Better. Experience More.” with robust financial targets.

2024 Outlook

  • 2024 full year Net Yield guidance on a Constant Currency basis increased 100 basis points from the prior guidance to approximately 8.2% from 7.2%.
  • 2024 full year Adjusted EBITDA guidance increased $50 million from the prior guidance to approximately $2.35 billion from $2.30 billion.
  • 2024 Adjusted Net Cruise Costs excluding Fuel per Capacity Day guidance remained unchanged at flat to prior year excluding the impact of Dry-docks.
  • Full year Adjusted Net Income guidance increased $60 million from prior guidance to approximately $790 million from $730 million, and Adjusted EPS guidance increased over 8%, or $0.11 to $1.53 from $1.42.
  • On track to achieve double-digit Adjusted ROIC by year-end.

“2024 continues to be an exceptional year in terms of our financial performance, as evidenced by our strong second quarter results which exceeded guidance across the board. As we raise our full-year guidance a third time, we expect our Adjusted EPS to grow approximately 120% compared to 2023, driven mainly by our ability to capitalize on the robust market demand and ensuring our guests are vacationing better and experiencing more across our brands,” remarked Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“The momentum we are garnering from strong yield growth, disciplined cost management and the initiatives that comprise our Charting the Course strategy further bolsters our confidence in achieving our previously announced 2026 financial and sustainability targets,” continued Sommer.

Business, Operations and Booking Environment Update

The Company continues to experience strong consumer demand as the majority of new bookings are pivoting to 2025 sailings. As a result, the Company remains at the upper range of its optimal booked position on a 12-month forward basis. Occupancy was 105.9% for the second quarter of 2024, slightly above guidance. Full year 2024 Occupancy is expected to average 105.2%, slightly above prior guidance.

In addition, top line growth in the second quarter was also strong. Gross margin per Capacity Day was approximately $124 in the quarter, up 7% versus 2023 on an as reported and Constant Currency basis. Net Yield growth was up approximately 6.3% versus 2023 on an as reported and Constant Currency basis, above guidance by 200 basis points due to strong close-in demand and onboard revenue performance. The Company’s advance ticket sales balance, including the long-term portion, ended the second quarter of 2024 at an all-time record high of $3.9 billion, approximately 11% higher than the same period of 2023.

The Company demonstrated continued progress on its ongoing margin enhancement initiatives to maximize revenue opportunities and right size its cost base. Gross Cruise Costs per Capacity Day was approximately $315 in the second quarter, which was flat versus last year. Adjusted Net Cruise Costs excluding Fuel per Capacity Day in the second quarter of 2024 was approximately $163 on an as reported and Constant Currency basis and was essentially flat year-over-year excluding the expected ~$9 impact from increased Dry-dock days and related costs and better than guidance of $165, as cost savings measures fully offset an increase in variable compensation due to strong performance of the business.

For the full year 2024, the Company increased its Net Yield guidance by 100 basis points from prior guidance to growth of approximately 8.2% from approximately 7.2% on a Constant Currency basis compared to 2023. The increase in guidance is driven by strong demand across all three brands and itineraries.

Full year Adjusted Net Cruise Cost Excluding Fuel per Capacity Day guidance remained unchanged and is expected to be approximately $159, increasing approximately 3.5% in Constant Currency, which includes an approximate 300 basis point impact from Dry-dock days and related costs in the year. Excluding this impact, Adjusted Net Cruise Cost Excluding Fuel per Capacity Day would be essentially flat year-over-year.

Adjusted Operational EBITDA Margin for the full year 2024 is expected to increase to 34.5% and full year 2024 Adjusted EBITDA guidance increased by $50 million to $2.35 billion. Adjusted EPS guidance was increased by $0.11, or 8%, to approximately $1.53 from approximately $1.42.

Liquidity and Financial Position

The Company is committed to prioritizing efforts to optimize its balance sheet and reduce leverage. As of June 30, 2024, the Company had total debt of $13.4 billion and Net Debt of $12.8 billion. Net Leverage improved by approximately 1.5 turns compared to December 31, 2023, ending the second quarter of 2024 at 5.9x and achieving our year-end goal 6 months early. The Company announced at its Investor Day that it plans to reduce its Net Leverage to the mid 4’s by 2026.

During the quarter, as expected, substantially all the holders of the 6% 2024 Exchangeable Notes exchanged their 2024 Exchangeable Notes for shares with any remaining unexchanged notes being repaid in cash at maturity.

At quarter-end, liquidity was $2.7 billion. This consists of approximately $594.1 million of cash and cash equivalents, $1.2 billion of availability under our undrawn Revolving Loan Facility, a $650 million undrawn backstop commitment, and other commitments.

“We enter the second half of 2024 with strong momentum, exceeding our guidance metrics in each quarter of 2024 on the back of strong execution. We continue to see robust demand heading into the back half of the year and are committed to improving efficiencies, reducing costs, and restoring our margins in a strategic and disciplined manner. Given our strong progress to date and current demand expectations, we are raising our 2024 full-year guidance for a third time this year for key metrics resulting in expected Adjusted EPS growth of 120% versus 2023, while keeping our cost guidance for the year unchanged at flat to prior year,” said Mark A. Kempa, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

Kempa continued, “Additionally, we made significant advances in reducing Net Leverage and de-risking our balance sheet during the first half of 2024. We have already accomplished our year-end goal of reducing Net Leverage by a full turn and a half versus year-end 2023, ending the quarter at 5.9x. We remain confident that our strong liquidity position, ongoing cash generation, and favorable growth prospects will enable us to continue to de-risk our balance sheet further bolstering our path to achieving the 2026 Charting the Course financial targets laid out at our recent Investor Day.”

Second Quarter 2024 Results

GAAP net income was $163.4 million or EPS of $0.35 compared to $86.1 million or EPS of $0.20 in the prior year. The Company reported Adjusted Net Income of $203.7 million or Adjusted EPS of $0.40 in the second quarter of 2024. This compares to Adjusted Net Income and Adjusted EPS of $137.0 million and $0.30, respectively, in the second quarter of 2023. Adjusted EBITDA in the second quarter was approximately $587.7 million, better than guidance of $555 million, and increased 14% compared to 2023, driven primarily by solid revenue performance and Adjusted Net Cruise Cost Excluding Fuel that was essentially flat year-over-year excluding the impact of Dry-docks.

Gross Cruise Costs per Capacity Day was approximately $315 in the quarter. Adjusted Net Cruise Costs excluding Fuel per Capacity Day was approximately $163 on an as reported and Constant Currency basis, which includes approximately $9 related to Dry-docks, and would have been essentially flat year-over-year without these Dry-dock impacts, reflecting the benefits from the Company’s ongoing margin enhancement initiative.

The Company reported fuel expense of $175 million in the quarter. Fuel price per metric ton, net of hedges, increased slightly to $719 from $715 in 2023. Fuel consumption of 243,000 metric tons was slightly better than projections.

Interest expense, net was $178.5 million in 2024 compared to $177.7 million in 2023.

Other income (expense), net was an income of $1.9 million in 2024 compared to an expense of ($8.0) million in 2023. The income and expense primarily relate to net gains and losses on foreign currency.

Outlook and Guidance

In addition to announcing the results for the second quarter 2024, the Company also provided guidance for the third quarter and full year 2024, along with accompanying sensitivities. The Company does not provide certain estimated future results on a GAAP basis because the Company is unable to predict, with reasonable certainty, the future movement of foreign exchange rates or the future impact of certain gains and charges. These items are uncertain and will depend on several factors, including industry conditions, and could be material to the Company’s results computed in accordance with GAAP. The Company has not provided reconciliations between the Company’s 2024 guidance and the most directly comparable GAAP measures because it would be too difficult to prepare a reliable U.S. GAAP quantitative reconciliation without unreasonable effort.
