Jaisalmer Itinerary For 3 Days

  • November 21, 2023

Jaisalmer is a princely state in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Known as the “Golden City,” it’s defined by its yellow sandstone architecture that has been preserved for centuries. Thanks to its abundant golden dunes and town built with golden honey sandstones, Jaisalmer is truly “golden” everywhere. This charming city, which was once considered an off-beat travel destination, has steadily gained popularity among travelers partly due to Instagram and improved connectivity.

Rawal Jaisal founded Jaisalmer in the twelfth century. The historic area is still steeped in the past, and every corner of the city offers stunning architecture, a thriving culture , and centuries-old traditions. With its narrow streets packed with jostling crowds, quaint shops , and vibrant offerings, the city exudes an old-world charm. The Jaisalmer Fort, perched atop a three-peaked hill, looms over the town and is unquestionably the highlight of any visit to Jaisalmer. The magnificent dunes of the Thar desert are also easily accessible from Jaisalmer. From exploring the impressive Jain temples and Havelis to sleeping under the stars and learning about its intriguing past, Jaisalmer has plenty to keep you entertained. Within three days, you can easily visit the majority of the well-known sites in this small and compact city.

Patwon ki Haveli

Jaisalmer Itinerary: Day 1

The itinerary for your first day will depend on when you get to Jaisalmer. Hopefully, you arrive by noon so that you have enough time to visit a couple of the popular Havelis, browse some local shops, and watch the sunset at Gadisar Lake. You can cap off the day by dining on a rooftop with spectacular views of the Jaisalmer Fort. Or perhaps take a foodie tour of the old city before retiring for the night.

1).  Patwon ki Haveli, Jaisalmer

This is our first stop of the 3-day Jaisalmer Itinerary. Patwon ki Haveli is one of the three major havelis in Jaisalmer and cannot be skipped. It is a majestic cluster of 5 small Havelis that were built between 1800 and 1860 by Guman Chand Patwa, one for each of his sons. The Havelis has wooden ceilings, airy courtyards, beautiful arches, and 60 balconies carved with exquisite mirrorwork, murals, and paintings. Every Haveli has a unique style that sets it apart from the others. The interiors are as regal as the exteriors, and you will be impressed by the grandeur and architecture on display. A museum featuring rare artifacts, paintings, and furniture has been established in one of the Havelis. Timing: 9 am to 5 pm Time Required: 1 hour Entry Tickets: Indians: Rs 20 Foreign Tourists Rs 100;

Nathmal ki Haveli, Must-Visit Places in Jaisalmer

2).  Nathmal ki Haveli, Jaisalmer

Our next stop is a short walk from Patwon ki Haveli. Maharaja Beri Sai commissioned Nathmal ki Haveli to serve as the residence of Prime Minister Diwan Mohata Nathmal, hence the name. The Haveli was built in 1885 by two Muslim brothers, and the architecture is an excellent blend of Islamic and Rajput architecture. Although not exact replicas, the two buildings share many similarities. The gorgeous paintings on the first floor, which were created with 1.5 kg of gold leaf, are the main attraction. You could get a glimpse of life in the bygone era by looking at the walls, which are engraved with images of horses, cattle, flora, etc. Timing: 8 am to 7 pm Time Required: 30 minutes Entry Tickets: No Fees

3).  Gadisar Lake, Jaisalmer

Let us now proceed to Gadisar Lake, which is located on the outskirts of Jaisalmer. The tranquil spot is one of Jaisalmer’s top attractions for spending an idyllic evening away from the crowded city and enjoying a spectacular sunset. Raja Rawal Jaiswal constructed Lake Gadisar in 1156 AD as a conservation reservoir. Water for the entire arid area used to come from this man-made oasis. Shallow ghats, Hindu shrines, and elegant cenotaphs surround the artificial lake. You can go boating, explore the sacred temples, and enjoy picturesque vistas of the lake and the nearby fort.  Due to its proximity to the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Gadisar Lake attracts a multitude of migratory and exotic bird species, making it a haven for bird enthusiasts during the winter months. Timing: 8 am-7 pm Time Required: 1-2 hour s Entry Tickets: Free

Jaisalmer Itinerary: Day 2

Spend the first part of your second day exploring the Jaisalmer Fort. To get the most out of your limited time, you can hire a guide to help you through the fort’s narrow lanes. Leave for Sam Sand Dunes by 4 p.m. to ensure you’re in time to witness the gorgeous sunset. You can choose to spend the night at the camp or to return to Jaisalmer after the evening activities.

1).  Jaisalmer Fort, Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Fort, which is situated right in the heart of the city, is a must-see attraction for any traveler to Jaisalmer. The UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaiswal, the ruler of the Bhati tribe. Perched atop Tirkuta Hill, the fort epitomizes Rajasthani architecture with its yellow crenelated sandstone construction. Encircling its formidable facades are four magnificent gates and 99 bastions. The Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Qila, has survived numerous attacks from various kings over the years. Reaching a height of 250 feet, the imposing fort provides sweeping views of Jaisalmer city from its epic viewpoints.

The Qila is often referred to as the “Living Fort” as it is home to close to 3000 people. Over one-fourth of the city’s population lives in the fort, which is a jumble of centuries-old houses, shops, palaces, temples, museums, restaurants, and cafes. Walking through the labyrinthine lanes, visiting the gorgeous Jain temples, dining at rooftop eateries, listening to folk music, and haggling for local handicrafts are some of the most culturally immersive experiences in the fort. There are seven 12th-century Jain temples located in Jaisalmer Fort. Fascinating sculptures of humans and animals adorn the walls and domes of these amazing temples. Housed in the temples are 6666 statues representing the 24 Tirthankaras of Jainism. The seven Jain temples are interconnected and are a major pilgrimage site for Jains. Timing: Any Time Time Required: 3-4 hours Entry Tickets: Free

 2).  Sam Sand Dunes, Jaisalmer

Later in the day, make your way to Sam Sand Dunes in the That Desert. The dunes, 42 kilometers from the city, are the best place to experience an authentic Desert safari. Sam Sand Dunes stretch for miles and miles into the horizon, and it’s easy to get lost if you’re not vigilant. To explore the sand dunes, you can take a jeep or ride a camel. Sunsets are truly magical here, as the crimson horizon reflects brilliantly on the golden sand.

Stay overnight at one of the numerous camping sites in the area to get the full desert experience. There are a variety of accommodations available, ranging from luxury to budget tents, that will provide you with the perfect space and opportunity to embrace the rugged beauty of your surroundings. Sleep under a blanket of stars, savor Rajasthani delicacies over a bonfire, and enjoy cultural evenings with traditional folk music and dances. Khuri Sand Dunes is another option if you’re looking for dunes that are not as commercialized as Sam Sand Dunes. They are also roughly 40 kilometers from the city and offer comparable adventures without crowds. Timing: Open All days Time Required: Depends on the activities Entry Tickets: No Entry Fees. Camel Ride: Rs 50-Rs 200, Jeep Safari: Rs 500-Rs 1500

Jaisalmer Itinerary: Day 3

The plan for the day will depend on where you resided the night before. If you stayed overnight at Sam Sand Dunes, depart for Jaisalmer early in the morning and make a stop at Kuldhara Village (40 km). After a few hours of trying to solve the mystery of the Ghost Village, you should leave. In case you slept in Jaisalmer, take a round trip to Kuldhara village, which is 18 kilometers away.  Either way, you’ll return to Jaisalmer by midday. For the next few hours, you are free to do as you please: rest, shop, or sample some of the local cuisines. In the late afternoon, head to Bada Bagh and Vyas Chatri to witness another amazing sunset. You’ve finished for the day. It’s now time to depart for your next destination , whether by night train or the following morning by plane or car.

Khuldara Village, Must-Visit Places in Jaisalmer

1).  Kuldhara Village, Jaisalmer

Known as the ‘Ghost Village’ of Jaisalmer, Kuldhara Village is located 18 km from the city center. In the nineteenth century, the Kuldhara village and its 83 nearby villages were abandoned overnight. It’s still a mystery why the entire region was abandoned. Folklore has it that Salim Singh, a state minister, desired to wed the chief’s daughter. Instead of complying with the minister’s request, the villagers fled into the night to avoid horrific consequences. The villager’s curse is thought to be the reason why there hasn’t been any human habitation for centuries. Honestly, the village offers little more than the crumbling remains of a few temples, stepwells, and other structures. Tourists are drawn to the mystery surrounding Kuldhara Village and come to see it for themselves. Timing: Open all days, 8 am to 6 pm (recommended) Time Required: 2-3 hours Entry Tickets: Rs 10 For Car: Rs 50

Bada Bagh, Must-Visit Places in Jaisalmer

2).  Bada Bagh, Jaisalmer

Six kilometers outside of Jaisalmer, Bada Bagh is home to an enormous collection of cenotaphs, or chhatris, erected in honor of the late Maharajas of Jaisalmer. The Bada Bagh was commissioned by Jait Singh in the 16th century AD, but it was completed by his son Raja Lunakaran after his demise. Additional Chhatris were added to the Bada Bagh between the 16th and the 20th centuries when it functioned as a royal family crematorium. Royal domes of various shapes and sizes are scattered throughout the park. You’ll be amazed by the amazing fusion of Mughal, Rajput, and Paliwal architectural styles. The dramatic setting of the honey-combed cenotaphs makes Bada Bagh a popular destination for pre-wedding shoots and Instagram shots. Timing: Open all days, 8 am to 6 pm Time Required: 1 hour Entry Tickets: Rs 100

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

3).  Vyas Chhatri, Jaisalmer

Vyas Chhatri is situated 4 km from the city centre and 7 km from Bada Bagh. It also has an impressive collection of meticulously carved sandstone cenotaphs. Constructed atop a former Brahmin cemetery, it honors Sage Ved Vyasa, the penman of the Mahabharata.  Vyas Chhatri, built atop a hill, is referred to as the city’s sunset point due to its panoramic panorama of the sun setting over the Sonar Fort and Jaisalmer City. Timing: Open all days, 8 am to 7:30 pm Time Required: 1 hour Entry Tickets: Rs 100

Best Time to Visit Jaisalmer?

The best time to visit Jaisalmer is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and the average temperature ranges between 10 and 30 degrees. December and January are the busiest travel months in Jaisalmer, so expect higher hotel and airfare rates. The Desert Festival takes place in February and March. If you can plan your trip during this time, you will have the opportunity to experience Rajasthani culture through folk dances, camel races, puppet shows, and other cultural events that are organized at that time. It’s best to avoid April through July because of the intense heat. As there is little rain in the region, you can plan a vacation in August or September , but there will be fewer activities and camping options.

Rajasthan Road Trip: 10 Days in Western & Southern Rajasthan

Last updated on

Strains of Padharo Mhare Desh, a Rajasthani song that means Welcome to my Land, follow you everywhere in Rajasthan, India’s driest and yet most visited state. Magnificent forts, palaces-turned-hotels , and luxury trains draw thousands of tourists every year. In the streets of Rajasthan, you can hear countless folklore and tales of brave Rajput warriors, marvel at beautiful havelis, listen to folk music, shop for handicrafts, and taste mouth-watering food. On a 10-day road trip through Rajasthan, see the best that this state has to offer and savour as many Rajasthani thalis as you can.

RAJASTHAN / INDIA

Most of the west of Rajasthan is covered by the golden sands of the Thar Desert which heeds no man-made borders and stretches into Pakistan. Despite being dry and arid, it is the most populous desert region in the world and has been, throughout history, with many royal dynasties building forts, palaces, and bustling cities like Jodhpur here. Small villages and nomadic settlements dot the desert and scrubland. Nomadic tribes eke out a livelihood by farming livestock and foraging. With the influx of tourists, many from these communities work at luxury resorts and desert camps performing traditional dances like kalbaliya and ghoomar to entertain guests. The Mangniyar community, known for their folk songs, are from this region. Most desert safaris start from Bikaner or Jaisalmer; it is an unforgettable experience to sleep in tents in the desert, under the clear starlit sky, with the wind painting patterns in the silent night.

The south is less arid but no less royal than the west. Here, with its countless tales of heroic kings and brave queens, is the princely region of Mewar. Numerous forts, like the magnificent Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh, rise atop forested hillocks and rocky outcrops of the Aravalis. The white city of Udaipur with its creamy-white palace, luxury hotels, shimmering lakes, havelis, ghats, and lively bazaars draws a steady stream of tourists every year. You can taste some of Rajasthan’s culinary delights at the many restaurants that dot this city. The region is also home to Rajasthan’s only hill station, Mount Abu, where the awe-inspiring Dilwara Jain Temples are located.

This 10-day Rajasthan road trip itinerary covers the best of the western and southern parts of the state. We will start from Bikaner, one of Rajasthan’s least visited jewels, and end our trip in the cool climes of Mount Abu. The route we will follow is this:

Bikaner — Jaisalmer — Jodhpur — Chittorgarh — Udaipur — Mount Abu

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

Our Rajasthan road trip begins 30 km from Bikaner in Deshnok at the unique Karni Mata Temple where devotees offer milk to the thousands of rats that inhabit the premises. The temple features an immaculate marble façade and solid silver doors. Rows of white marble rats, panes carved with leafy vines and lizards, tigers, snakes, figurines of humans, and vases fill every inch of the late Mughal style building that was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the early 20 th century.

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

After a late breakfast of puri sabji at one of the many stalls that line the road leading to the temple, head back to the city to see the magnificent Junagarh Fort . Built in 1589 by Maharaja by Maharaja Rai Singh, the Junagarh Fort was originally known as the Chintamani Durg and was the residence of the royal family of Bikaner till 1902 when the residence was shifted to the Lalgarh Palace. The complex, built of red sandstone and Carrera marble, is fortified with 37 bastions and seven gates. The Har Mandir, the private temple of the royal family, is located by the Tripolia Gate. By the Daulat Pol, you can see hand imprints of the Maharanis who committed sati . It is a sobering experience and will make you stop for a while to contemplate the lives of these women.

The Phool Mahal is the oldest part of the palace and was built by Raja Rai Singh. Beautiful glass inlay work and stucco work showcasing traditional motifs of flowers adorn the walls of the Phool Mahal. The public audience hall, Karan Mahal , was built by Karan Singh to celebrate his victory over the Mughals. A beautiful marble throne stands in the centre of a marble pool in the quadrangle which leads into the Anoop Mahal with its lacquered red and gold walls. In the Vikram Vilas Durbar Hall, you can see a WWI De Havilland DH-9 biplane bomber. The Badal Mahal is one of the most aesthetically pleasing among the many mahals : On the walls and ceiling, bright blue rain clouds and streaks of yellow lightning have been painted around alcoves containing paintings and idols.

TIP : It can easily take 2-3 hours to explore the Junagarh Palace, so plan accordingly.

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

There is a museum, Pracheena , that houses a wealth of period furniture, costumes, décor, textiles, arts and crafts, crockery and cutlery, and jewellery used by the royal family. The museum offers a wonderful insight into the daily lives of the royal family. A tour of the Junagarh Fort easily takes around 2-3 hrs.

Post lunch, visit the Bhandasar Temple , one of Bikaner’s two Jain temples. The pillars bear floral arabesques and depictions of the lives of the 24 Jain  tirthankaras. Locals insist that 40,000 kg of ghee was used instead of water in the mortar and on hot days, it seeps through the floor of the temple! Nearby is the Lakshminath Temple built by Maharaja Rao Lunakaran.

Stop by the sumptuous Rampuria Havelis , a group of seven havelis built by three brothers. It is the grandest of the 15 th and 17th-century merchant havelis in the old city of Bikaner. The jharokhas , jaali- work, immaculate stone carvings, and stained-glass work is breathtaking. Massive wooden doors and latticed windows adorn the 400-year-old structure which has a few touches of European architecture as well with some of the bas reliefs depicting European kings and queens. The Kothari Haveli is another of Bikaner’s many merchant havelis . Every inch of the façade is covered with traditional floral carvings and artwork.

Spend the rest of the day wandering in the old city where a labyrinth of winding alleys conceals fantastic havelis , temples with intricate carvings, shops selling local artisanry, and eateries dishing out mouth-watering local fare.

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

Start bright and early to hit the road to Jaisalmer , the next stop on our Rajasthan road trip. But first, a cup of kesari chai and a sweet ghewar ! The journey takes anywhere between 5 to 6 hrs; the landscape is flat as a flan, taupe and ochre with little to no trees. If you leave the windows down, the dust will settle on your face, on your lashes, and on your tongue should you part your lips.

If you are into haunted places, take a detour to the abandoned Kuldhara village which, according to legends, was cursed in the 1800s. To this day, locals claim that the voices of dead villagers can be heard among the ruins.

At Jaisalmer, stop for a lunch of dal-bati-churma before heading to the famed Patwan ki Haveli . The Patwan ki Haveli is a symphony carved from the golden rock of Jaisalmer. This opulent haveli was home to a family of bankers and opium traders. On the outside are filigree work, carved jaalis, and jharokhas . Three out of five houses have been turned into museums and are crowded no matter when you go. Hire a guide to learn more about the history of the havelis .

Patwa ki Haveli

In the evening, visit the Bada Bagh . The soft crimson of the setting sun adds a touch of drama to the magnificent cenotaphs that fill this  bagh , this garden where the royals of Jaisalmer have been laid to rest.

For dinner, head to one of Jaisalmer’s many rooftop cafes, preferably one below the fort– we recommend Hotel Shahi Palace– from where you can see the fort, lit bright and golden, glimmering under a sky full of stars. Pick a place where you hear local folk music and taste some local delicacies.

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

At daybreak, be at Gadisar Lake , a man-made lake built during the 1400s by Raja Rawal Singh. In the golden hour, the chattri in the middle of the lake appears magical. There are no crowds, no chaos at this hour. Just the lapping of the wavelets on the steps, the gentle breeze, and the light of the rising sun as it brushes everything with gold.

After a quick breakfast of  mirchi pakoda  and  jalebi  at Hanuman Chowk, head to the golden fort of Jaisalmer, the  Sonar Kella which was made famous by the Oscar-winning director, Satyajit Ray who filmed a film with the same name here. Built in 1556 by Rawal Jaisal on Trikuta Hill, the Jaisalmer Fort is one of the five forts of Rajasthan which have been awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Site tag. Around it stretches the bustling town of Jaisalmer with its havelis and hotels, and beyond seethes the sand of the Thar.  It is one of the few living forts in India; cattle and livestock were evicted a few years ago and now the tight, twisting alleys are full of smoke-belching motorbikes. The original occupants were members of the royal member, Brahmins, and Rajputs, and for each of them, the area was demarcated within the fort. The ramp that leads to the main fort has four massive gates. Prominent tourist points are the Maharawal’s Palace with its countless jharokhas , the Lakshminath Temple, a group of 7 Jain temples built of golden sandstone between the 12 th and 16 th centuries, and numerous havelis. The fort even had an indigenous system called the ghutu nali to drain rainwater. Haphazard construction has greatly reduced its effectiveness at a time when climate change is causing inopportune cloud bursts in the area. Researchers have warned that the structure is weakening but there seems to be no stopping the builders. It can easily take you hours to explore the fort. The alleys are full of shops selling colourful textiles and handicrafts. Musicians play in corners and one can partake of the local life. Rooftop restaurants serve excellent local dishes and offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Near the entrance is an eatery dishing out piping hot pizzas.

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

Post lunch, head towards the roaring sands of the Thar Desert , where you’ll spend a night at a desert camp, one of the highlights of this Rajasthan road trip. The road runs through clumps of desert shrub, wasteland, dunes, and wind farms. India’s second-largest operational onshore windfarm, the Suzlon Wind Park is located here with a capacity of generating over 1 GW of energy.

Arrive in time for a sunset safari and join the hundreds who come here to watch the blood-red disc slip beneath the horizon. The silhouette of camels walking in front of the sun makes for an excellent shot! However, skip the camel ride and request your hosts for a jeep instead. The camels we saw looked emaciated and more often than more, their owners hit them to walk faster. Most of the camps will arrange for cultural shows in the evening where you can watch traditional  kalbeliya  and ghoomar performances and hear the soulful voice of the  mangniyar  singers. At our camp, a young Argentinian musician sang a devotional Hindi song and played the ukulele! He’s been travelling around the world with his family to learn about folk music in various parts of the world.

Sam Sand Dunes Desert Camp sunset

Return to the dunes at daybreak to witness the mesmerizing sunrise. Post breakfast at the camp, set off for Jodhpur, the next stop on this road trip. If you have an extra day, drive to the Desert National Park to see local and migratory birds and mammals like foxes and chinkaras.

Highways unfurl over kilometres and kilometres of flat land; the vegetation is sparse, the afternoon wind blistering even in December. Unlike in Bengal, here the villages are far apart. In between them, just the barren scrubland land. Wild camels, though a rare sight, graze nonchalantly and most of them look healthier and happier than their domesticated counterparts we saw in Jaisalmer.

The magnificent Mehrangarh Fort looms above the city and in the late afternoon light, it looks ethereal. Check-in at your hotel before heading out to explore the old city. With its blue walled houses, tight lanes through which flow the rush of everyday life, stalls selling chai and pakoras, wandering cattle, dogs, and interesting typography, the old city is intensely photogenic and has graced many a magazine cover. There is a clutch of hostels and guesthouses here, but parking is pretty much impossible to find.

Be warned that the lanes of the old city are narrow and sometimes impossible to navigate. Book a hotel near the railway station or on one of the wider thoroughfares and hire an auto to go into the heart of the fabled blue city.

Mehrangarh Fort

Start the day with a breakfast of pyaz kachori , mirchi vada , and jalebi at Chaudhary Namkeen or Janta Sweets before heading off toward the Mehrangarh Fort from where you can enjoy breath-taking views of the city of Jodhpur. One of the largest forts in Rajasthan, the Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha. At the entrance, folk singers welcome you with songs of the land. Elegant courtyards, intricate jaali work, jharokhas, vibrant stucco work, and stained-glass panes adorn the magnificent structure. Inside the fort are numerous mahals which have been turned into museums. The galleries at Mehrangarh are some of the most well-maintained in the country. They feature weaponry, miniature paintings, turbans, a set of palanquins, and various crafts that are owned by the royal family of Jodhpur. A well-preserved elephant howdah is one of the attractions housed in the Shringar Chowk. The Sheesh Mahal is an absolute beauty! Colourful glass inlays, mirrors, and stained-glass work adorn every inch of this dazzling mahal. The balustrades and fluted columns of the Phool Mahal draw from Mughal architecture but the jaali work and paintings that adorn the pillars are Rajasthani in style. Most of the original artwork is there but some of it was repainted in the 19 th century. The Moti Mahal is another of Mehrangarh’s wonders. Crushed shells were mixed with the plaster to give the room a pearl-like lustre!

Post lunch at Chokelao where you can taste the best of Rajasthani cuisine, head to the Jaswant Thada , a cenotaph built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The monument, built of polished white marble, has intricate carvings all over the surface. In the light of the full moon, it appears to emit an otherworldly glow! It is a sight to be remembered.

On the way back to the city, stop by to see the grand Umaid Bhavan Palace . Constructed in the Indo-deco style, the palace stands of perfectly manicured lawns and predominantly features dun sandstone. Vintage clocks and cars are some of the attractions here. The museum houses a lovely collection of miniature paintings, murals, stuffed leopards, and antique paraphernalia owned by the royal family.

The total journey today will take anywhere between 8-9 hrs, so start by 6 am to reach Kumbhalgarh before noon. Take a detour near Rajasamand to visit the Kumbhalgarh Fort . It was built in the 15 th century by Rana Kumbha and is one of the 5 Rajasthani forts to feature in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Inside, there are magnificent Jain temples—one of them features 52 chattris — and Hindu Temples. The Neelkanth Mahadeva temple dates back to 1458 and features 24 pillars. The idol of Shiva in this temple has 12 arms and is made of black stone. The views of the forested hillside from the fort are mesmerizing!

Another 4 hrs on winding roads will bring you to the ruins of Chittorgarh. From the road, it appears like an endless rampart running along the edge of the hill. The story of Rani Padmini was set here. According to local lores, Alauddin Khilji was so enchanted by her beauty that he attacked Chittor to defeat her husband, Rawal Ratan Singh, and take her away but when Rawal Ratan was killed in battle, all the queens, including Padmini, committed jauhar. Nobody knows whether she was a historical figure but her depiction in a Bollywood movie, Padmavat, led to widespread protests by Hindu ring-wing groups across Rajasthan.

Most of the Chittor Fort stands in ruins but some of the structures can still be seen today. The 122 ft high Vijaya Stambh was erected by Rana Kumbha between 1458 and 1468 to commemorate his victory over Mahmud Shah I Khalji. The Kirti Stambh is shorter and older than the Vijaya Stambh and features Jain sculptures. It is dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara. The Rana Kumbh Palace, the Fateh Prakash Palace, and Rani Padmini’s Palace (reconstructed in the 19 th century) are the only surviving palaces in the Chittor Fort. The former has rich historical significance: Maharana Udai Singh, the founder of Udaipur was born here; Maharani Padmini consigned herself to flames in this complex; Meera Bai lived for a while in this palace and sang bhajans in praise of Lord Krishna at the nearby Meerabai Temple. The first two house museums offer valuable insights into the rich history of Mewar. The Gaumukh Reservoir is another of the fort’s sights. The spring that feeds the tank emerges from a carved cow’s mouth. It was the principal source of water for the residents of the fort.

The next stop on the Rajasthan road trip is the beautiful lakeside city of Udaipur ! Spend the morning wandering the streets, then settle for a leisurely lunch at one of Udaipur’s numerous restaurants.

Later in the afternoon, drive to Sajjan Garh to witness the sun setting over the placid lakes on the banks of which stands the white city of Udaipur. Lights glimmer in the palaces around the lake, in the middle of the lake, and around it. Overhead, in the deep blue sky are millions of stars.

The palaces, hotels, and restaurants surrounding Pichola Lake are lit up at night and their dazzling reflection in the placid waters of the lake creates a magical scene. A sky full of glittering stars and lights glittering on the soft, night-darkened waves. Spend some time strolling along the lakeside and taking in the magnificence of this royal city. Later, enjoy a rooftop dinner. The Sun N’ Moon Café is an excellent place to down some chilled beer over some North Indian specialities. Or, head to Ambrai to taste some of the region’s classic dishes. As you relish your dinner by the lakeside, you’ll realize why Udaipur is called one of the most romantic cities in India.

View from Sajjan Garh on the Rajasthan Road trip

Begin the 8th day of your Rajasthan road trip by offering prayers at the Jagdish Temple . Then head towards Udaipur’s primary attraction, the magnificent City Palace . Go when the doors open or you’ll get pushed around by crowds. As you walk under the Tripolia Gates, a granite and marble structure adorned with a profusion of cupolas, balconies, and jharokhas will welcome you. Inside are numerous buildings like Mor-Chowk, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal, Badi Mahal, Krishna Vilas, and Shambhu Vilas, you can spend hours gazing at mirrorwork, murals, coloured-glass inlays, marble carvings, and silver work. You can also get a ferry ticket to visit Jag Mandir at the entrance.

Post lunch, visit the lovely Sahelion ki Baari to see its beautiful gardens and fountains, then spend some time admiring the vintage cars at the Vintage Car Museum .

In the evening, walk to the jetty and buy tickets for a 20-minute sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola. In the dying light of the sun, the chabutaras, havelis, and ghats that surround the lake appear to glow with an ethereal light. You can also see Sajjan Garh perched high atop a hill. It seems to shimmer in the light.

Spend the rest of your day strolling through the bazaars of the old city and shopping! The markets are overflowing with traditional textiles, handbags, mirror-work skirts, quilted jackets, mojris , jewellery, hand-made paper and leather-bound journals, woodwork, and glass bangles. Snack on lip-smacking pyaz kachoris and chai as you go on a shopping spree.

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

See the sunrise from Gangaur Ghat and feed the pigeons that descend in droves here in the small hours of the morning. The purplish twilight gives way to a watery pinkish-orange light and the Jal Mahal and Jag Mandir look like glistening jewels afloat on the sleepy waters of the lake. Grab a quick breakfast before heading to the  Bagore Haveli  to see traditional Rajasthani crafts and handiwork.

Then, say a sad goodbye to this beautiful city and set out for Mount Abu , the only hill station in this land of sand and sunshine and the last stop on our Rajasthan road trip. Lunch at one of the many restaurants that line the main drag, check-in at your hotel, then drive straight to the Guru Shikhar to see the sunset. A short but steep hike from the parking lot will take you to the top of the peak where you can offer prayers at a temple and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The gold-lit chiaroscuro unfolding on the land below is an unforgettable sight.

Guru Shikhar, Mount Abu, at sunset

Start your day by hiking to Toad Rock to see the sunrise. The uniquely shaped rock offers excellent views of Nakki Lake and the town of Mount Abu. Post breakfast, enjoy a stroll around Nakki Lake before driving to the Dilwara Jain Temples . Built between the 11 th and 13 th centuries, the 5 Jain temples in the complex are poetry carved in pure white marble. The carvings are immaculate, designs crafted so meticulously by hand that every petal of every flower, every lotus bud, and every motif is life-like. Grand mandalas carved to mathematical perfection adorn the domed ceilings. Every inch of the Dilwara Temples is covered with marble artwork so delicate that they are impossible to replicate with modern machinery. The beauty of these temples will take your breath away.

Our 10-day Rajasthan road trip ends in Mount Abu. We took the train back to New Delhi but you can go onwards to Ahmedabad, 227 km away, in Gujarat.

Mount Abu on Rajasthan Road Trip

You can also take a detour from Jaisalmer and spend a day in Barmer on the way to Jodhpur. There are numerous temples here, including the magnificent Kiradu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Chintamani Parashnath Jain Temple.

STAY HYDRATED! Rajasthan is arid and on a road trip through Rajasthan, it is essential that you stay hydrated. Avoid buying bottled water; carry refillable bottles and fill them at hotels and roadside eateries. If you are wary of the local water, carry a SteriPen or water purification tablets with you. Do not waste water as it is a scarce resource here.

TRY THE LOCAL FOOD! Rajasthani cuisine is predominantly vegetarian and in places like Jaisalmer, meat is difficult to find. Try local delicacies like dal-bati-churma , gatte-ki-sabji , ker sangri , and badam ka halwa . However, note that most of these dishes use ghee and/or yogurt. If you are vegan, make sure that you clearly communicate your dietary requirements to your server. Laal Maas and Mohan Maas are two of Rajasthan’s well-known non-vegetarian dishes. Try them in one of the restaurants in Jodhpur or Udaipur.

DRESS IN LAYERS! In winter, days are hot and nights are cold. So, pack accordingly. Especially, in the camps at Sam Sand Dunes and in Mount Abu, you may need something heavier than a light jacket. Irrespective of the season, it is best to dress in layers when travelling through Rajasthan.

DRESS MODESTLY! Rural Rajasthan is conservative and even in the cities, women dress conservatively. Unless you are at a five-star resort, it is highly recommended that you dress modestly. Keep your legs and shoulders covered. Exposing your cleavage and midriff is a strict no-no. Take a cue from the beautiful Rajasthani women and dress accordingly. Long kurtis over jeans, culottes and trousers, harem pants, maxi dresses, flowy skirts, and Indian-style salwar-kameez are all good options. For men, avoid wearing shorts, especially in places of worship.

ASK BEFORE PHOTOGRAPHING! There is no dearth of photo opportunities in Rajasthan and this 10-day travel itinerary through Rajasthan will give you thousands of moments to shoot. The entire state, with its gorgeous architecture, beautiful locals, vibrant culture, and lively bazaars, is photogenic but please be respectful before you take photographs. In some places, like the Dilwara Jain Temples, photography is strictly forbidden. If you are photographing folk singers or performers, make sure you ask them first.

KEEP CASH HANDY! Always keep cash with you when on the road. There are countless toll plazas on the highways in Rajasthan and almost none of them accept cards. Toll fares are anywhere between INR 45 to INR 80 depending on the road and the route.

There are not many car renting services in India. Zoomcar is available for rent in select cities like Jaipur and Udaipur. You can also rent a Zoomcar in Delhi and drive to Ahmedabad from Mount Abu to drop it off. However, the best way to do a road trip in Rajasthan is to rent a car and hire a chauffeur. That’s how we did it! We chalked out an itinerary, spoke to one of the thousands of travel agents in the state, and picked one based in Bikaner. Our chauffeur was a local from near Bikaner and he doubled up as a guide as he showed us around his homestay! It definitely cost us a lot less than it would have if we had rented a vehicle from a car rental agency.

The nearest airport is at Jodhpur, 251 km away. Bikaner has a railway station and is well-connected to New Delhi. We took the overnight train from New Delhi and arrived on a bright wintry morning at Bikaner.

The nearest domestic airport is at Udaipur, 210 km away, and the nearest international airport is at Ahmedabad, 227 km away. Abu Road is the nearest railway station and there are connections to New Delhi. We boarded the afternoon train and arrived in New Delhi early the next morning.

Rajasthan is one of India’s most visited states and 10 days isn’t enough to explore all of it but this road trip covers the best of Rajasthan’s western and southern regions. Eastern Rajasthan, too, is full of grandeur: The forts at Jaipur and Ajmer, the famous Hawa Mahal of Jaipur, the stepwell in Abhaneri, the colourful havelis of Sekhawati, the temples of Pushkar, and so much more. We hope to be back soon!

So much to see. Road trips are by far the best way to take in the beauty as well as to emerge yourself in the local culture.

Danik Avatar

Wow, this road trip has everything, from amazing landscapes to buildings with beautiful facades. Would love to take an road trip around here. How easy is it for visitors to India to get around by car by themselves? Would you recommend it?

Mohana and Aninda Avatar

It’s getting easier with companies like Zoomcar and Revv offering services from major cities. I definitely recommend giving it a try! You can also hire a chauffeured car as the cost is comparable (sometimes cheaper) than renting a self-drive vehicle and it saves you the hassle of driving. Driving can be stressful in India, esp. within and around big cities.

Sam Peach Avatar

Wow there really is so much to see and do! I think this looks like an amazing way to really experience Rajasthan to the fullest 🙂 So in-depth and helpful!

Alison Avatar

You have painted such a beautiful picture of this part of the world. The rats…yikes! And thank you for the tip about the camels. I would love to follow this itinerary. Is it easy and safe for travellers to rent a car and venture on their own?

Rajasthan sees a lot of western tourists all year round and yes, it’s safe to rent a car and venture on your own. However, renting options are limited. You can rent a car from Zoomcar or Revv in cities like Jaipur and Udaipur. We recommend hiring a chauffeured car. You pay a comparable amount, get a chauffeur who knows the area well, and it saves you from the hassle of driving and negotiating the notorious traffic. Driving can be stressful in India esp. in and around the bigger cities.

What an article! Your article has given a perspective about Rajasthan. It encapsulates almost all relevant information pertaining to Rajasthan tour in India. It is a narration based on firsthand experience. The pics are beautiful.

One suggestion – All the destinations mentioned in your article are famous and most frequented ones by the tourists. I would suggest a few lesser known but deeply steeped into archaic culture destinations like Bundi, Narlai, Osian etc to be included in a Rajasthan tour.

Thanks, Anshumali, for the recommendation. Hopefully, we will get a chance to visit Rajasthan again and visit some lesser-known destionations.

How to reach jaisalmer from mumbai.

Jaisalmer is situated about 1100 kms north of Mumbai in the dessert state of India. Jaisalmer was once a major trading centre for India and is a former princely state. It is also known as the Golden City owing to the yellow brick architecture spread all over. There are a number of options to travel throughout India as the transport system is well developed. The fastest way to travel between the two cities is by air while the cheapest option would be taking the overnight train.

Jaisalmer Guide: Planning Your Trip

mumbai jaisalmer road trip

Michele Falzone/Getty Images

Remotely located in far western Rajasthan, near the border of Pakistan, Jaisalmer requires effort to reach but it's definitely worth it. Rising out of the sandy Thar Desert, this astonishing golden sandstone city will transport you to another era, back when it was a stop on the Silk Route from Central Asia to China. Dominating the landscape is Jaisalmer's evocative 12th-century fort, which was once inhabited by royal rulers and is still home to a quarter of the city's residents. It's one of the last living forts in India and the world, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Find out all you need to know in this Jaisalmer guide.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Jaisalmer has an extreme desert climate with cold winter nights, scorching summer days, and very little rain. The tourist season runs from October to March during the coolest parts of the year. In January, overnight temperatures drop to around 41 degrees F (5 degrees C), but the days are pleasant, with highs usually above 68 degrees F (20 degrees C). It's not advisable to visit Jaisalmer from April through August, unless you can deal with searing daily temperatures above 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). The September shoulder season will still be hot, but it can be ideal for avoiding the crowds.
  • Language: Rajasthani, Hindi, and English.
  • Currency: Indian rupee.
  • Time Zone: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) +5.5 hours, also known as Indian Standard Time. Udaipur does not have daylight saving time.
  • Getting Around: Much of the city can be covered on foot, so do bring comfortable walking shoes. Bicycles (useful for accessing narrow lanes and avoiding traffic bottlenecks) and motorcycles are also available for rent. Alternatively, auto rickshaws are convenient for short trips and can be readily flagged down. If you're venturing further afield into the desert, it's best to hire a taxi for the day. Rates start from around 3,000 rupees ($40). Taxi companies also offer half-day local sightseeing excursions from around 1,500 rupees ($20). App-based cab services such as Uber don't operate in Jaisalmer as of yet.
  • Travel Tip: Try to catch the fun Jaisalmer Desert Festival, held over three days in late January or February each year.

Things to Do

Jaisalmer provides an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in a piece of living history and learn about desert culture. The city revolves around the fort and has magnificent 19th-century noble mansions, ornate Jain temples dating back to the 12th century, royal cenotaphs, and a serene 14th-century man-made lake dotted with small shrines. Sunsets over the fort are spectacular, as its structure appears to merge with the desert. You'll want to devote at least a day to exploring the surrounding desert landscape, too.

  • Take a guided walking tour of the fort and surrounding vicinity. Several companies offer such tours, including this insightful Fort Heritage Walk by Jaisalmer Magic . There's a labyrinth of shops, restaurants, homes, hotels, places of worship, and a museum inside the fort. It's fascinating!
  • Marvel at the architecture and intricate stone carvings of Patwaon ki Haveli , Nathmal ki Haveli, and Salim Singh ki Haveli mansions. Patwaon ki Haveli is the pick of the bunch if you're short on time or money.
  • Go on a camel safari in the desert , or jeep safari if you don't have an affinity for camels.

Check out our article about the top things to do in Jaisalmer for more information.

What to Eat and Drink

Jaisalmer's distinctive regional cuisine is reflective of the ingredients available in the arid desert environment. It's typically vegetarian, and utilizes a lot of pulses and hardy grains such as millet. Ker Sangri is an unusual specialty of the region, made from pickled Indigenous berries and beans that grow wild in the Thar Desert. Try Haldi ki Sabji (turmeric yogurt curry) during winter. The city's most iconic drink is a cooling Makhania Lassi (sweet buttermilk with dry fruits). Pyaaz ki Kachori, a popular snack of deep-fried pastry discs with onion filling, is sold on streets all over the city. Local sweets include Ghotua Laddoo and Panchdhari Ladoo (balls of flour, ghee, and spices). Get them from Dhanraj Ranmal Bhatia sweet shop near the fort.

You'll no doubt encounter government-authorized bhaang shops in Jaisalmer. Bhaang is a paste made from cannabis plant leafs, and it has an ancient connection with Hinduism and Lord Shiva . It's commonly served in drinks during the Holi festival . The shops in Jaisalmer sell it in cookies, cakes, and lassi (a yogurt-based shake). Be careful to consume in moderation, though, because you won't feel the effects straight away.

Jaisalmer isn't known for its nightlife or extensive range of alcohol, so your best bet for a memorable evening is to head to a rooftop restaurant or bar with fort views at sundown. Cafe the Kaku at near Sunset Point and Helsinki House hotel near Gadi Sagar are both outstanding. The Dunes Bar at the Marriott Resort and Spa is more upmarket with cocktails and fine wines.

Where to Stay

Visitors to Jaisalmer are often keen to stay within the fort, which is understandable as it certainly is alluring. However, it's important to be aware of the environmental challenges the fort is facing, particularly damage from drainage and water seepage. In addition, keep in mind that accessibility can be an issue, as cars aren't permitted inside the fort and auto rickshaws can only go up to certain points. As an alternative, there are many atmospheric accommodations for all budgets in the area below the fort, and they provide a panoramic vista of the fort from their rooftops. Tourists often spend a night or two in the desert near Jaisalmer as well. The majority of desert camps are situated around the Sam Sand Dunes. This area is very commercial, though; if noise is a concern, choose a camp that's further out from the tourist hub there, or stay in the Khuri Sand Dunes.

Check out our recommendations of the best Jaisalmer hotels with fort views for all budgets, and the top Jaisalmer desert camps for glamping .

Getting There

Jaisalmer's small airport operates out of an Indian Air Force base. It receives limited direct flights from nearby major cities such as Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. By road, Jaisalmer is about five hours from Jodhpur and Bikaner. Expect to pay 4,000 to 5,000 rupees ($55 to $65) for a cab from Jodhpur (we recommend stopping at Pokhran Fort along the way). Regular, inexpensive buses also run from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer; tickets cost around 500 rupees.

Indian Railways train is another option. There are trains from major cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, and Jodhpur. Two of the most prominent ones are the 14659 Runicha Express from Delhi (via Jaipur and Jodhpur), and the overnight 14810 Jodhpur Jaisalmer Express . You'll need to book well in advance.

Culture and Customs

Competition for tourist business is fierce in Jaisalmer, giving rise to the prevalence of touts and scams. You'll most likely be approached by someone wanting to provide their services or sell something outside the fort entrance, at the train and bus stations, and at the sand dunes. Touts can even be aboard buses from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer. Fortunately, locals have launched an anti-tout campaign to curb the harassment, but you should still be prepared to be firm in dealing with such people. Don't be swayed by their cheap prices for camel safaris and hotels, and don't believe it if they tell you your hotel has closed or burnt down. Touts and camel safari operators are also known to offer free accommodations on the Couchsurfing platform as a way of luring travelers in.

Conservative dress is most appropriate in Jaisalmer. It's respectful to keep your shoulders and legs covered. A shawl is handy to throw over a sleeveless top or dress.

Tipping isn't compulsory in India, although it's expected if you're happy with the service. A 10 to 15 percent tip is sufficient at a restaurant, or simply round the bill up on smaller amounts. Flag down the waiter to get your bill. Hotels will commonly have a tip box where you can leave gratuities for the staff.

Money Saving Tips

  • The fort is free to enter and never closes. Gadisar Lake is another free attraction.
  • You'll get hefty discounts from April to September if you can bear the heat.
  • Research thoroughly and bargain hard to avoid being ripped off, especially when doing touristy activities such as desert safaris.
  • Stay at a backpacker hostel such as Zostel.
  • Hire a scooter or motorbike for the day to reduce transportation costs. Backpacker hostels provide this service at a reasonable price.
  • Grab an unlimited Rajasthani thali (platter) for lunch. You'll be able to eat as much as you can for only a few dollars.

What I love about the city is its intimate feel and uncanny ability to still surprise me, despite my familiarity. There’s always a new alley to wander, a fresh perspective on the fort, or an undiscovered story waiting around the sandstone corners.

But it’s not all charming—It’s got its share of grit and dust and has a rugged feel which might shock you if you’re used to the cleaner cities. I know all the cities in India have their moments of pollution, dirt, and crowds, but in Jaisalmer, it’s more pronounced, maybe because it’s quite compact when compared to the other Indian cities.

The roads can be messy, with trash and cow dung, and you’ll often walk right alongside cows. The place has a seasonal heartbeat—thriving in the cooler winter months when tourists come by the numbers. But when the summer rolls in with its scorching heat and desert winds, the city really lives up to the ‘desert’ in ‘deserted.’

I chatted with a local who shared that most folks here actually pack up and set off to other towns and cities in search of work when the tourist season winds down. The bustling bazaars and shops that once thrived under the winter sun start to shutter as the summer season takes hold, bringing with it a quiet that settles over the city.

Jaisalmer empties out for so much of the year. This transient lifestyle might explain why the city seems a little less cared for.

But that’s Jaisalmer for you—it’s got its own unique way of life that you won’t find anywhere else.

What to See and Do in Jaisalmer

visiting jaisalmer fort rajasthan

Let’s talk about what you can see and do in Jaisalmer beyond Thar Desert!

The main attraction is the massive fort that towers over the city. It’s not just a historical monument; it’s a living breathing part of the city. People actually live inside the fort, adding a unique layer of life and culture to this ancient structure.

A reality of the Jaisalmer Fort being a living fort is that it’s not as clean as it might be if it were uninhabited. The daily life within its walls does leave its mark, contributing to a less polished appearance compared to other forts that aren’t residential.

Despite this, inside the fort, you’ll be charmed by the ancient palaces, exquisite Jain temples, and towering structures. Roaming its vibrant alleys, you’re sure to stumble upon lively markets overflowing with all sorts of local and colorful finds.

Next, explore the havelis , grand mansions that once housed the city’s elite. Notable ones include Salim Singh ki Haveli , Nathmal ki Haveli , and Patwon ki Haveli , each with unique architecture and tales.

gadisar lake during sunset

And don’t forget to swing by the Gadisar Lake – it’s pretty peaceful there, wonderful at sunset.

At the Jaisalmer War Museum , you can dive into India’s rich military history and honor the sacrifices of Indian Army heroes. The Thar Heritage Museum gives you a closer look at the times of Jaisalmer, celebrating Rajasthan’s rich culture, heritage, and architectural splendor.

Now, if you’re up for a little adventure outside the city, there’s Lodurva , which is famous for its Jain temples. Kuldhara is another must-visit; it’s an abandoned village with a mysterious past.

thar desert safari camel

Coming to the main reason why you are here, the Thar Desert calls for an unforgettable experience. Camel rides, stunning sunsets, and even overnight stays under the stars await.

If you’re interested in temples, there’s the Ghantyali Mata Temple and the Tanot Mata Temple , which have some fascinating historical stories behind them.

bop 609 indo pak border jaisalmer rajasthan india

And if you want to see something really different, you can visit the Indo-Pak border and Longewala , a site famous for the Battle of Longewala during the Indo-Pak War of 1971. You can see the actual battleground and the remains of military vehicles here. It’s a bit of a drive, but it’s something you don’t see every day.

Remember, these places are not really tourist spots; they’re parts of living history and international relations that give you a chance to witness first-hand the complexities and nuances of this region, making for a profound and educational experience. Always carry your identification and necessary travel documents, and respect local guidelines and cultural sensitivities.

And don’t miss Bada Bagh , a site of majestic royal cenotaphs. It’s particularly magical during sunset.

3 Routes For A Great Delhi To Jaisalmer Road Trip

by middha on May 19, 2018

Jaisalmer, also known as ‘The Golden City’, is in Rajasthan and is a world heritage city. It is located close to Thar Desert and is also close to Pakistan border. It was founded in the 12th century. Jaisalmer hosts a number of fairs and festivals. Sona Quila is a major attraction of the city.

Other attractions include its magnificent havelis, camel rides and desert safaris, its bustling bazaars, Jain Temples, Gadisar Lake, Desert National Park, Akal Wood Fossil Park, Amar Sagar Lake, and more.

A road trip from Delhi to Jaisalmer would be a long one, however, well worth taking.

Best Time To Visit

Summers are boiling hot, best to avoid a trip in April and May. November to March is an ideal time to visit Jaisalmer as the temperature hardly reaches beyond 24 degrees Celsius.

Sightseeing and outdoor activities, as well as the road trip, become a pleasure during winters. Monsoons are also not a great time as the area receives scanty rainfall, turning it more humid.

How To Get There

The distance from Delhi to Jaisalmer by road is roughly 800 kilometers. It is good to hire a driver if you are taking your own car, or hire a cab with a driver. If you are planning a bike trip, book your overnight stays in advance. Private bus operators offer tickets as low as Rs. 1000 and onwards. Book an AC Volvo for a convenient trip. Book online for discounts.

Route Options

Check out three great route options to take from Delhi to Jaisalmer.

Route 1: The Bikaner Route

Delhi → Bahadurgarh → Rohtak → Hisar → Fatehpur → Bikaner → Jaisalmer

This route takes around 14 hours across NH 9 and NH 52. The distance is around 800 kilometers. An overnight stay in Bikaner is recommended in case if you want to enjoy the sights of Bikaner and also if fatigue sets in.

Popular Stopovers on Your Delhi to Jaisalmer Road Trip

Junagarh Fort Bikaner

  • Asigarh Fort: This could be your first stop at Hansi which comes after Rohtak. It is a 12th-century fort built by Prithviraj Chauhan.
  • Agroha Dham: Post Hansi, you will reach Hisar where you can visit Agroha Dham, an architecturally beautiful temple with a cave inside.
  • Churu Fort: A 16th-century marvel, a must visit for history aficionados.
  • Nathji Ki Chatri: Further down the road from the Fort, visit this historical temple built as a shrine to Lord Shiva.
  • Sethani Ka Johara: Further down the highway on your way to Ratangarh, visit this ancient reservoir constructed to give water during the famine.
  • Junagarh Fort: A major attraction in Bikaner, this palace is gorgeously carved with mirror work and a fine collection of artifacts.
  • National Research Centre on Camels: Half an hour from Bikaner you can find out everything to know about camels and their different breeds.
  • Jain Temple Bhandasar: Check out amazing fresco paintings and intricate architecture of Jain Temple. Legend says it was built with ghee instead of water.
  • Gajner Lake: Go boating in Gajner Lake and enjoy spotting migratory birds.
  • Lalgarh Palace: Do visit this historical palace built in European, Mughal and Indian architectural styles.

Route 2: The Jaipur Route

Delhi → Neemrana → Shahpura → Jaipur → Nagaur → Jaisalmer

This is also a popular road to take on your road trip. It goes through NH 48 and 125 and takes around 15 hours across 838 kilometers. It is advisable to stay in Jaipur overnight.

Popular Stopovers on your Delhi to Jaisalmer Road Trip

Amber Fort Jaipur

  • Ziplining in Neemrana Fort: Add a little more adventure to your road trip by ziplining across Neemrana’s architectural ambiance. Book in advance at Flying Fox.
  • Step-wells in Shahpura: Drive through the town of Shahpura and check out their traditional step-wells and roam around its colorful bazaars.
  • Hawa Mahal: Visit Hawa Mahal in Jaipur and be amazed by the high merit architecture of its colorful facade.
  • Amber Fort: A must-see Jaipur gem, set atop a hill, this huge fort has rooms, courtyards, and architecture that will blow your mind.
  • Jaigarh Fort: Set higher than Amber Fort, this palace is worth a visit for its cannons and stunning architecture.
  • Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing: Learn about block printing and everything about textiles and indulge in shopping at this hidden gem.
  • Birla Temple: Delicately carved in white marble, this temple exudes serenity.
  • Fort of the Hooded Cobra: Proceed to Nagaur from Jaipur where you will find this flat-land fort, famous for its frescoes and Mughal garden.
  • Nagaur Fort: Wide, clean and beautiful, the fort is famous for the features of its water infrastructure.

Route 3: The Jodhpur Route

Delhi → Neemrana → Shahpura → Jaipur → Kishangarh → Ajmer → Beawar → Jodhpur → Pokhran → Jaisalmer

This is a third option worth exploring. It runs through the same route until Jaipur then passes through Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Pokhran to Jaisalmer. It takes approximately 15 hours on NH 48 and 125.  Overnight stay in Jodhpur is recommended. You can choose to visit any of the destinations mentioned in Route 2. Only the ones after Jaipur are mentioned below.

Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur

  • Ajmer Sharif Dargah: Visited by millions worldwide, the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is a must visit.
  • Mehrangarh Fort: This is one of the top rated and most magnificent forts in India, famous for its rich heritage, unsurpassed architecture and stunning view of the blue city of Jodhpur.
  • Umaid Bhavan Palace Museum: Check out the amazing personal collections of the Rathores, and other ancient artifacts and historical tidbits.
  • Salim Singh Ki Haveli: Right before reaching Jaisalmer, stop in Pokhran to take a tour of this haveli with a unique peacock shaped roof.

Safety Measures

  • The highway is in a great shape from Delhi to Jaipur. But do leave early as the routes are long and traffic is a given.
  • If you are not visiting Jaipur, then do take the bypass some 45 kilometers before Jaipur and head straight to Ajmer.
  • The Bikaner route is also in excellent condition where you can maintain a good speed.
  • You may hit a bad patch around Beawar and Pokhran.
  • The Churu patch is good but be careful in Rohtak traffic.
  • Make sure your vehicles are properly serviced.
  • Since all routes pass through major cities, gas stations and eateries will be plenty.
  • Follow Google Maps when not on state highways for guided navigation.
  • Switch drivers if more than one of you can drive, or take plenty of breaks en route.

To sum up, a trip to Jaisalmer will surely be one of the best experiences of your life. You will have the opportunity to immerse in the rich historical legacy of India throughout your trip. So plan your itinerary based on the route that suits you best and gets going. Have any questions? Leave your queries in the comments below and we’ll get back to you.
