Fire Museum NYC: What you can expect

Located in the former quarters of the FDNY’s Engine Company No. 30, a renovated 1904 firehouse at 278 Spring Street between Varick and Hudson Streets, the NYC Fire Museum is hard to miss. In beautiful SoHo , it offers on three floors everything you need to know about the history and present about the FDNY.

Expect to see everything from fire-related art, artifacts and their original gear to apparatus from the late 18th century to the present which will blow your mind. It’s a great place to take your kids but also for you to learn more about the FDNY.

NYC Fire Museum for Kids

They have special events for the little ones, where the kids learn how the FDNY operates during a fire in a building. Get ready, because there will be (real) smoke/fog to stage a real fire situation. Our kids were amazed by it.

Fire Museum of Maryland

The Fire Museum of Maryland is one of the largest fire museums in America. Located in Lutherville, just north of Baltimore City, the Museum is a leading institution in preserving, restoring, and interpreting the history of the urban fire service in the United States.

The Fire Museum of Maryland grew from a private collection of fire engines, apparatus and fire related materials that had been amassed over more than forty years by the Stephen G. Heaver family.

Founded in 1971, the museum houses a world-class collection with more than forty pieces of fire fighting apparatus dating from 1806 to 1957. The collection also includes over 1,700 smaller artifacts, an extensive working telegraph system, and a large archive and library with over 13,000 documents, catalogues, photographs, negatives and books.

The mission of the New York City Fire Museum is to collect, preserve and present the history and cultural heritage of the fire service of New York and to provide fire prevention and safety education to the public, especially children.

NYCFM Founding, Evolution, and Facts

The New York City Fire Museum’s roots date back to 1870 when it was established in the headquarters of the Fire Commissioners at 155 Mercer Street. Exactly when it was dismantled is not documented but was most likely at the time when headquarters was relocated to East 67th Street in the late 1880’s. In 1938, Chief of Department John McKenna ordered that the relics be set up as a museum, along with a library, on the seventh floor of the NYC Fire College in the Packard Building at 32-02 Queens Boulevard in Long Island City. A better home was secured in 1948 in the new FDNY apparatus repair shops at 48-58 35th Street. It remained there until 1957 when a bay was vacated at the quarters of Hook & Ladder Company 1 at 100 Duane Street in Manhattan. This location made it much easier for the general public to visit the impressive array of artifacts exhibited on three floors of the firehouse. The Museum remained there until the Home Insurance Company presented its own extensive collection of fire memorabilia to the city in 1981, making a move to larger space imperative.

A new non-profit, The Friends of the New York City Fire Department Collection, was created to raise funds to renovate the former quarters of Engine Company No. 30, a 1904 Beaux-Arts firehouse on Spring Street, and in 1987, the New York City Fire Museum opened its doors and has proudly been in operation ever since. 

Displays illustrate the evolution of firefighting from the bucket brigades of Peter Stuyvesant’s New Amsterdam through the colorful history of volunteer firefighters to modern firefighting techniques and equipment. The Museum houses a special memorial to the 343 members of the FDNY who made the Supreme Sacrifice on 9/11 and features a number of firefighting artifacts recovered from the World Trade Center site. A video room and a mock apartment with an artificial smoke machine and black-lighted fire hazards are used in the museum’s fire education program for school children ages K through 12.

The New York City Fire Museum attracts tens of thousands of visitors a year from all over America and almost every country in the world. Retired FDNY firefighters proudly volunteer to relate stories of New York City's “Bravest” and with the help of the Museum’s stunning collection, tell how they earned that distinction.

On November 17, 2015, the New York City Fire Museum received an Absolute Charter from the Board of Regents of the NYS Department of Education. This is a significant step forward giving our museum the recognition it justly deserves as an important cultural and historical institution. Accordingly, The Friends of the New York City Fire Department Collection entity officially changed its name to the New York City Fire Museum.

Fire department groups are also invited to tour their Connecticut 

firefighting heritage. 

We also enjoy having scouting groups, school groups, and bus tour groups.

Explore the life of a 19th-century firefighter! The reconstructed cast iron facade of a Baltimore City's Engine 8 is a threshold through which we cross into the past. Visitors learn how the brave men of Baltimore's Fire Department lived, worked, and protected their city. Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin)

If any proof is needed for the extravagance of Russia's Imperial rulers, then it can be found in the fact that, in less than two centuries, the Romanov Tsars established not one but two suburban estates - at Tsarskoe Selo and Pushkin - that, in terms of grandeur and excess, outstrip even Versailles. What is more, at Tsarskoe Selo, the 18 th century saw the construction of two vast and truly exceptional palaces, both surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens with diverse and fascinating decorative architecture.

Built for Empress Elizabeth by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the architect of St. Petersburg's Winter Palace, the Catherine Palace is undoubtedly Tsarskoe Selo's top attraction, particularly renowned for the extraordinary Amber Room. Less well known, and currently much more dilapidated, the Alexander Palace is nonetheless a neoclassical masterpiece, and has a particularly poignant connection with the family of the last Tsar, Nicholas II.

The town of Pushkin, which surrounds the Tsarskoe Selo estates, is St. Petersburg's most charming suburb. Renamed in Soviet times to honour Russia's greatest poet, the town has numerous sights connected to Alexander Sergeevich, including a museum in the former Imperial Lycee, where he was schooled.

Like Pushkin, Tsarskoe Selo is one of St. Petersburg's must-see attractions, and can easily occupy visitors for a full day. And, like Pushkin, it can be very crowded during the tourist high-season in the summer. Arrive early or be prepared to join long queues, especially for the Catherine Palace.
