A city in the state of Haryana, Kurukshetra, also known as Dharmakshetra is known as the "Land of the Bhagavad Gita". Situated 170 km north to Delhi, the place is famous for the battle between the Kauvaras and the Pandavas in the Hindu epic, Mahabharata. It is the place where Lord Krishna is said to have recited the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. 

In the past, Kurukshetra was one of the most important centres for Vedic civilization as well as education. Lord Buddha and several Sikh Gurus are known to have visited and spent time in Kurukshetra. The place has a large number of devout centres, holy shrines and kunds which trace back to the epic ages and the earliest Indian civilisation. Archaeological evidence claim that this city was in existence during the pre-Harrapan times. Kurukshetra was also called Thanesar or Sthaneswar, meaning 'place of God'. The Archaeological evidence lists that Ashoka, the Mauryan ruler made Kurukshetra a centre of learning for people from all over the world. The place is famous for its temples, lakes and museums documenting the history of pre-Harappan and Harappan civilisations. A few kilometres from Kurukshetra is the village known as Amin, where there are remnants of a fort which is believed to be Arjun's son, Abhimanyu's fort.

Kurukshetra Tourist Places: Top 6 Places to Visit

1. shri krishna museum.

Shri Krishna played an essential role in the war of Mahabharata. And this museum displays everything about Him and has been alone of its kind since 1987.

The present-day museum has nine galleries where you will see archaeological artifacts from Kurukshetra, Haryana, Dwarka, Mathura, and other parts of the country.

These galleries display wood carvings, ivory works, metal artifacts, inscriptions, miniature paintings, and more related to Lord Krishna.

Another gallery depicts the lifetime of Sri Krishna and the Mahabharata — this is the museum’s main attraction. Besides this, workshops, exhibitions, and competitions happen throughout the year.

Opening Hours: 10 am to 4:15 pm (Closed on Mondays)

Ticket Rate: INR 30 for adults, INR 10 for children (as in December 2021)

Amenities: Public restrooms, tour guide, and canteen. Photography is not allowed.

2. Brahma Sarovar

The most visited, Brahma Sarovar, is the largest artificial lake in Asia and one of the best among Kurukshetra tourist places.

This lake gets its name after the creator of this universe, Lord Brahma, as per Hinduism. As per believers, this lake is precisely the place where Brahma Ji performed his first Yagya.

Further, King Kuru renovated this place.

Kurukshetra gets its name after the name of King Kuru. He was the ancestor of Pandavas and Kauravas.

The result of bathing in this sacred lake on the day of a solar eclipse is equivalent to performing a hundred Ashwamedha Yagyas.

Spread over a circumference of about 4 kilometers, you’ll see Sarveshwar Mahadev temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the middle of this lake. On one side of it is the Sri Krishna Arjuna chariot. This colossal statue made of bronze weighing 35 tons looks grand. It depicts Krishna preaching to Arjuna.

Gita Jayanti celebrations or International Gita Mahotsav occur every year to November-December. This event happens on a large scale, in which devotees from all over the country come to participate.

3. Kurukshetra Panorama and Science Center

Situated in the Shri Krishna Museum complex, this science center brings to life the stories based on the episodes in the Mahabharata. Its cylindrical building will hold your gaze.

The unique amalgamation of science and religion here will fascinate you for sure.

The Gitapaath and the screams of the Mahabharata war give a lively depiction of the events of this time.

You get sermons explaining the importance of several events in the Mahabharata war while providing a scientific viewpoint.

Here, you get the picture of the old-age relation of India with science, technology, properties of matter, the structure of atoms, geometry, astronomy, ancient Indian concepts of surgery, and much more.

4. Sheikh Chilli’s Tomb and Raja Harsha’s Mound

You may have heard about the stories of Sheikh Chilli.

Sheikh Chilli (Sheikh Chaheli), or Abdul Rahim (Abdul Razzaq), was a Sufi saint. And the eldest son of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, Dara Shikoh, built his tomb in the 17th century. (Shah Jahan is known for the Taj Mahal — a wonder of the world).

Built of red sandstone and marble, the complex of this tomb is pleasing to see at first sight. The complex has a mosque, a Madrasa, and a museum under the protection of the ASI.

Behind the tomb, you’ll find Raja’s mound — spread over a radius of 1.5 km. Experts have found the cultural remains from the Kushan to the Mughal period (which are in the museum).

5. Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple

Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is a few meters away from Sheikh Chilli Tomb. The area is called Thanesar after the name of this temple (Sthaneshwar) dedicated to Lord Shiva.

According to scholars, Lord Brahma Himself established the Shivling here. Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, also visited this place and spent some days.

There is also a belief that before the Mahabharata war, Lord Krishna, along with the Pandavas, worshiped the Shivling located here and got the blessings to be victorious in the Mahabharata war.

Kurukshetra's history is related with the legendary story of Mahabharata. Gotten its name King Kuru the antecedent of Pandavas and Kauravas, it is deemed that the king selected this place nestled at the banks of the revered River Saraswati to embed theology with eight qualities, which are Truth (satya), Kindness (daya), Yagya (puja), Austerity(tapas), forgiveness (kshama), Brahmacharya (bachelor), Charity (dena) and purity (sucha). His determination and devotion overwhelmed Lord Vishnu and as a result he blessed him with two boons. The first one was that the place would be recognized by his name forever. The other one was that liberation would be achieved by anybody passing away in Kurukshetra. The land was also hailed by various names in different eras such as Dharmakshetra, Uttaravedi and Brahmadevi.

Bhadrakali Temple: Addressed to Goddess Bhadrakali, the shrine is one of the Shakti Peethas where desires of the devotees are deemed to be nurtured. According to the myths, the Pandavas had offered prayers to Goddess Durga to attain a benefit of victory in the battle of Mahabharata.

Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple: Another celebrated site that holds close connection with the Pandavas kith and kin, Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the highly visited Shiva Shrines in the striking town of Kurukshetra. There is a holy tank situated next to the temple which is believed to have some medicinal properties.

Krishna Museum: Set up in 1987 by Kurukshetra Development Board, Krishna Museum has portrayed the different characters of Lord Krishna from 1st century to 11th century. There are many things in the museum that will certainly allure the attention of the visitors including Lord Ganesha statue, wooden panels, palm-leaf etchings and miniature paintings.

Brahma Sarovar is revered for its religious importance and believed to be created by Lord Brahma. Nearby, Sthaneshwar Mahadeo is an ancient Shiva temple, he is considered to be the ruler of this place. Tourist places in Kurukshetra

The Kurukshetra district in Haryana is one of the oldest and is steeped in Hindu mythology. This area has been controlled by several dynasties throughout history and is known to have served as a hub of learning during the Maurya Empire. Kurukshetra is most known for being the location of the conflict mentioned in the Mahabharata, an ancient Indian epic. This area, one of the holiest in India, is also renowned as the cradle of civilisation itself, according to Hindu mythology. It is also full of unique folklore and stories. Here are a few captivating Kurukshetra locations.

How to reach Kurukshetra

By air: The nearest airports are in Delhi and Chandigarh, which are connected to Kurukshetra by road and rail.

By rail: Kurukshetra Junction railway station is at the junction of the Delhi–Kalka line and the Kurukshetra–Jind branch line.

By road: You can reach Delhi or Chandigarh airport and from there, you can take the road.

1. Brahma Sarovar

As its name implies, Brahma Sarovar is a water tank in Thanesar, Haryana. It is breathtakingly beautiful and revered by Hindus. It is believed that people who take a plunge in the water inside the tank will find redemption.

Visitors may pass hours here admiring the sunset’s reflection in the lake, which is crimson and golden. This location draws guests and encourages repeat visits since it is vibrant and active throughout. It is a must-visit location since there are artisan stores and a range of foods from many states to eat.

2. Kos Minars

The towns of Kurukshetra are peppered with Kos Minars, or mediaeval landmarks. In the Mughal Empire, these ancient markers of distance were used across the nation. Haryana has 49 of them, making them well worth a visit.

Even though they were extremely small in scale, Kos Minars, sturdy spherical pillars that stood around 30 ft tall, were a crucial component of communication and transportation during the Mughal rule.

3. Sheikh Chilli’s Tomb

The mortal remains of the famous Sufi saint Sheikh Chilli are housed in this charming mausoleum, which has subtle Persian overtones. A second, smaller tomb that is supposed to be dedicated to the saint’s wife is also there, along with lovely Mughal gardens, a mosque and a museum. The museum inside the complex has some unique artefacts from surrounding archaeological sites from various periods of civilisation.

4. Raja Harsh ka Tila

The current town of Thanesar enjoys the benefit of being erected over a prehistoric location of significant archaeological value. Remains from the 7th century, when King Harshvardhan governed the area, have been discovered during excavation in the mound known as ‘Harsh Ka Tila’, which is about a kilometre long.

Some of the most significant post-Gupta period findings may be seen at this location, which displays a genuinely intriguing succession of civilisations from the Kushana period to the most recent Mughal period. Raja Harsh ka Tila, an archaeological wonder and significant find, is evidence of the long history of the Kurukshetra neighbourhood.

5. Krishna Museum

The Krishna Museum, which was established in 1987, depicts several items pertaining to Lord Krishna and Krishna’s incarnations between the first and eleventh centuries AD. The six-gallery museum displays statues in the shapes that are depicted in the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. Exquisite wood carvings, wooden panels, bronze castings, ivory creations, palm-leaf etchings, stone sculptures, archaeological items and miniature paintings are among the displays in the galleries. Additionally, there is a tableau based on the Bhagavad-Gita and the Mahabharata, fashioned of clay and papier mache.

6. Bhishma Kund

Bhishma Kund is linked to the well-known Mahabharata narrative. Arjun created a bed of arrows for Bhishma Pitamah there, so he could view the war from there. When Bhishma asked for water, because he was thirsty, Arjun discharged an arrow into the earth, causing a water spring to emerge and relieve Bhishma’s thirst. The Bhishma Kund is the current name for this body of water.

7. Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple

It is stated that the Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is where the Pandavas received Lord Shiva’s blessings. The tank on the temple grounds is said to have healing powers and to have cured Banasura of his leprosy. The temple’s construction may be traced to Sthaneshwar, the former capital of Harsha Vardhana, according to archaeologists. The temple’s roof, which is formed like an amla dome and has tall pinnacles, is visible. An old statue of Lord Shiva’s manifestation, the Shivalingam, is kept at the temple.

8. Kurukshetra Panorama

The purpose of the Kurukshetra Panorama & Science Centre is to describe the place of science in conventional Indian religion. The centre showcases interactive and useful displays of technology fusing with culture, including a lifelike panorama of the fabled battle of Kurukshetra. Here, along with their scientific reasons, one can learn in-depth information about the ideas of matter and their attributes used in ancient India.

9. Lakshmi Narayan temple

Dedicated to Lord Narayan and Goddess Lakshmi, the Lakshmi Narayan Temple was constructed in the 18th century under the rule of the Chola Dynasty. The temple is very important religiously. If devotees visit this temple and do seven circumambulations around the shrine, they are said to avoid having to make the Char Dham pilgrimage.

10. Dharohar Museum

The extensive historical, cultural, archaeological, and architectural history of the state is shown in the Dharohar Museum. It was started in Kurukshetra University’s Golden Jubilee year. The museum’s more than 23 galleries showcase the rich cultural legacy of the area via artwork, photos, artefacts, and manuscripts.

There is an outdoor amphitheatre in the museum complex as well, where folk concerts are regularly scheduled.

Inld announces abhay chautala ls candidate from kurukshetra, sunaina from hisar.

The Indian National Lok Dal on Thursday released a list of three candidates for the Lok Sabha polls from Haryana, fielding party’s senior leader Abhay Singh Chautala from Kurukshetra.  The INLD has also fielded its women wing leader Sunaina Chautala from Hisar while from the Ambala reserved constituency, the party has fielded its youth leader Gurpreet Singh, a Sikh face. INLD Women Wing general secretary Sunaina Chautala is the wife of Abhay Chautala’s cousin Ravi Chautala. Ravi is the son of INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala’s younger brother late Partap Singh Chautala. From Hisar, the JJP has fielded Naina Chautala, who is currently the MLA from Badhra in Charkhi Dadri district. Naina is the mother of former deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala and wife of JJP president Ajay Singh Chautala. BJP candidate Ranjit Chautala, 78, an Independent MLA, had last month joined the saffron party and the party has fielded him from Hisar. Meanwhile, according to an INLD statement, all the parties have “ignored” the Sikh community from the Ambala Lok Sabha constituency. It said the people of Ambala will make Gurpreet Singh (28) victorious from there. According to the statement, the candidates for the remaining seven Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will be announced on April 22.
