Having recently returned from my trip I just wanted to thank you for all your help. I had the adventure of a lifetime and everything was absolutely wonderful. I think your company is excellent and I will recommend it to everyone Susan

A big thank you to Discover Egypt for an amazing 10 day holiday 17th November. 3 nights in the Kempinski Hotel Cairo followed by 7 nights cruise down the nile on MS Tulip. Our egyptologists- Karim, Ahmed and Omar were fantastic throughout, and the sites, temples we visited were mind blowing. Still on a high

Just to let you know & you can advice Philip, the trip is beyond my expectations. Everything is going to plan & the so well put together & brilliant guides.

We are now safely returned from our 2 week adventure in Egypt which was truly amazing! We are so grateful for the excellent trip you so skilfully put together at rather short notice for us. Every detail was superbly organised from Visas and transport to the airport to the 6 flights and all transfers and hotel bookings. Everything went so smoothly and we learnt so much from the excellent Egyptology Guides who supported us so well around pyramids, temples , tombs and museums. We even tried a camel ride and watched belly dancing and many Egyptian traditional events. Thank you so much for your wonderfully supportive help, advice and assistance for this very happy and memorable holiday. Kind Regards, Chris and Alice - booked through Malvern World Travel

Discover Egypt Classic Egypt 10 Nights Hotel Ramses Hilton Cairo This is a large busy modern hotel set in the city centre. It is an ideal location for sightseeing in Cairo and Giza. It has many restaurants with varied menu choices. We found the breakfast buffet and evening buffet the best option. The public areas were clean and tidy and the reception area always busy. Our room was spacious clean and comfortable. All the staff that we spoke to we friendly and helpful. Our stay was short but very enjoyable. We booked both optional tours the first to the Great Pyramids with our wonderful guide Saad Zaki who was both interesting and informative. The second days tour took us to the Egyptian Museum and the beautiful Citadel again accompanied by our guide Saad who would ensure that our trip was both fun and flexible to suit our needs. 10/10 MS Tulip The Nile After a short hassle free flight, we boarded this elegant vessel at Luxor. Our cabin on the second deck was clean comfortable and surprisingly spacious. Our next 7 days were full on visiting some of the ancient world’s treasures. This time accompanied by our friendly informative and humorous guide Mostafa. The facilities on board were of a high standard our only comment would be that the buffet food could be a little hotter, it was tasty though. This is a comment only not a criticism. We took the long and exhausting trip to Abu Simbel which was magnificent even for me a partially sighted traveller We all had a magnificent trip and if you get a chance please go with Discover Egypt and their local guides at Wings Travel. 10/10 Stephen and Nicola.

We just wanted to thank you for advising and arranging a superb adventure for Jo, Sam, and myself. The trip was brilliant in nearly every aspect …. Discover Egypt had everything organised to the minute. Everyone we met couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly and on reflection I can’t believe the amount we have crammed into 7 days. We would recommend Discover Egypt again.

we are back from Egypt. Thank you very much for organising this wonderful trip. Everything went according to the itinerary. I must mention a special thanks to Mr Walled our guide from Luxor to Aswan. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, and very patient.

This is just to let you know how much we enjoyed our holiday to Egypt. We returned on the 26th of Jan having enjoyed a wonderful time, and absorbing so much Egyptian culture our brains were fit to burst. All the arrangements ran smoothly, the boat was lovely, as were all the staff on board. Our fellow passengers were interesting companions whose company we much enjoyed We’d like to stress the amazing guide we had whilst on board the MS Tulip, he was so thoughtful, well informed, and considerate. A trained archaeologist his specialist knowledge was excellent as was his organisation of excursions. He took time out to guide us through local souks and spice stores. His name is Mohamed Fouad - we cannot recommend him highly enough, perhaps you might be able to let Discover Egypt know how much we appreciated his attention and thoughtfulness. Cairo was a real contrast to the Nile especially the traffic! Again, we had a lovely guide, Nivene. She escorted us to the monuments and museum and found lovely typical places for our lunch. She was great company We are safely home in rainy Berkshire after an amazing time in Egypt. Everything was very well organised - the management and staff on the cruise went out of their way to make us feel at home - the food was excellent. I can understand why you have returned to Egypt - hopefully we can too someday. Thank you once again for your help in planning our trip

I thought you would like to see this feedback from my clients travelling now.... wanted to let you know that we've had a great first 2 days. We have the below the feedback which we would be grateful if you can pass to Discover Egypt and Wing Tours. Particularly if they have an employee award scheme. "We had the most amazing time with our Egyptologist and Driver on 18th March from Mena House to the Pyramids & Sphinx and Sakkara. Plus, the following day 19th March to the Egyptian Museum and Citadel. Our Egyptologist hit the right note with excellent information on what we were seeing and giving us a real flavour of the history of Egypt. He has a great way of engaging with us and bringing ancient Egypt to light We enjoyed our conversations with him, and he made us feel very much at ease. We would highly recommend both our Egyptologist and the driver too who was courteous and ensure we were always comfortable”.

Nile cruise 10 February 2023 My partner, and I were lucky enough to go on one of your Nile Cruises from 10th to 20th February made through Miles Morgan in Nailsworth. We were accompanied throughout the tour by Mr Mohamed Fouad from Luxor Tours, and he was so exceptionally good that we want to write, on behalf of our group, to commend his services. Our group of eight English tourists witnessed a whole host of guides at the many sites we visited and saw how they shouted and scrambled in quite physical scrums at times as various vendors wanted to take us in boats, horse drawn carriages or other minibuses. On the other hand, Mr Fouad was calm, firm, and polite, and our transport was always in the right place at the right time. Mr Fouad was a gentle, gentleman who had extensive knowledge of history, geography and politics and the story of the region was his passion, yet he briefed us in a simple and interesting way without being pompous or condescending. In short, he was outstanding, and he made the holiday for us all. We will never forget him. It would be wonderful if you could find a way to convey to Mr Fouad what a difference, he made to our Nile experience and how much we appreciated his professionalism, humour, and organisational skills. He is a good man, and we would love it if you could pass on our appreciation to him. Crichton and Amanda

Nile cruise January 2023 This is just to let you know how much we enjoyed our holiday to Egypt. She was great company. Thank you again for helping us to select our holiday! Julia

Cairo and MS Tulip cruise March 2023 We used Discover Egypt; very professional they organised two cabins for us as I snore loudly! Sorting out a Visa is very easy, just google Egypt Visa and check that it’s the official eVisa Egyptian government website. Follow the instructions and fill in the form making sure you copy exactly the details in your passport, any mistake will result in a NO, and cost you your fee. You will get PDF versions of your Visa emailed to you. When you arrive at Cairo airport just join the queue. Transfer to the hotel was fun and smooth, again great support from the staff on the ground, despite it being late at night. The organisation in Egypt from start to finish was exceptional, the Steigenberger Hotel with view of the Pyramids was delightful, food was great. We organised a couple of private tours before we left the UK as our son has ADHD and needed something small. Transfer to Luxor went smoothly, again very well organised, and soon we were on our boat M/S Tulip. Brilliant staff, friendly and attentive, the boat was clean, comfortable, and not too big which was very nice. All I can say about the tours and guide were exceptional. Ahmad Mozamel was the best guide we have ever had, not only was he an expert Egyptologist, but the way also he explained the history and took us to important locations within temples to show different aspects of the Pharaoh, Roman and Greek influences was exceptional. During the 7 days he let slip that he worked for Dr Zahi Hawass (the top main in Egypt) and frequently took part in archaeological exploration and digs, and had a Masters in Egyptology, he was a passionate professional. Food on board was excellent, lots of choice, well prepared and very tasty. There is enough to suit all tastes unless you are impossibly fussy!! Entertainment was fun and typical of a Nile Cruise with Egyptian night, Belly Dancing, local musicians etc. Quality and quantity of drink available was great and sensibly priced. There is a coffee machine on Deck 3 towards the front of the boat past the fitness room if you needed a quick fix at any time. The whole holiday was just brilliant, our son loved it and we will be going back to Egypt again soon. Elaine, Julian and Justin

I would like to express our thanks for a wonderful holiday to Egypt. It was so well organised, everyone was friendly and helpful. Your guides were very knowledgeable. It was my 60th Birthday while I was in holiday and the boat did a surprise celebration and a cake of the event, without any of our party saying anything, which was lovely. I don't think the holiday could have been any better and I would certainly recommend your company to our friends. Well done to you all. Karen

Tulip Nile cruise March 2022. We had a really wonderful holiday courtesy of Discover Egypt. The MS Tulip was a really spacious and comfortable boat, our bedroom was much larger than I was expecting – plenty of storage space and an excellently comfy bed. It helped that the other guests were good fun and the excursions were well thought out and didn’t disappoint. Omar, the trips’ Egyptologists was an absolute delight. He was knowledgeable, passionate and hardworking. It was a truly lovely holiday and definitely exceeded our expectations. All at head office seems to know their stuff and offered flexibility when we needed it, so an overall professional and hassle free experience. Thank you all! Chrissie - Oxfordshire.

Steigenberger Pyramids and MS Tulip February 2022 Just got back from our 10-day trip to Cairo (3 nights) followed by 7 nights on MS Tulip. What a fantastic trip full of superlatives. Particularly high points include: Amazing guides (Amhad Badawy in Cairo and Ahmad Al Mozamel on Tulip) who combined huge enthusiasm/positivity, vast knowledge with an ability to convey it in remarkable English, and an unstinting dedication to providing a 1st class client experience Very attentive customer service by the Wings reps who met us at the airport and organised transfers etc removing hassle and worry - especially valuable given my mother-in-law (Octogenarian) was with us. Fabulous overall standard of service from every member of staff, great accommodation, facilities and food on MS Tulip. I would thoroughly recommend this trip and will refer friends and family to you Jeremy Shropshire

just returned from your one week trip on the MS Tulip, Luxor to Aswan and back, and wanted to let you know it was excellent. Exceeded our expectations in every department; beautiful ship, spacious cabin, great food, wonderful friendly staff, really really faultless. And we were blown away by the excursions to the amazing temples and tombs, all vividly brought to life by Ahmed, our incredibly knowledgeable and attentive tour guide who was brilliant. We were looked after every step of the way, from touch down in Luxor, to boarding the plane to leave a week later. I always like to review our trips honestly, but rarely are they so positive. But in this case, thoroughly well deserved. Thanks for a brilliant trip, we shall certainly be recommending you. Brian

Dear Philip, we're now back home from our holiday 10 days. I'd like to say we had a wonderful trip to Egypt and everything was top notch, the boat and staff were 101% and our historical visits were exceptional, I would like to praise our great tour guide Muhammed for making it a holiday to remember. His knowledge and enthusiasm reverberated through the group and nothing was too much for him, be it sites, questions, fun or even locating ATM machines, he certainly was the cherry on top of our holiday. Jan -

MS Tulip - Luxor to Aswan 7 day Nile Cruise 29 April 2019 Myself and my family have just returned from an amazing holiday on MS Tulip. It was the first visit to Egypt for my family and my seventh as I love the country and people very much, however, this was my first experience sailing on this beautiful boat. The fabulous food and service onboard is second to none. The Manager and staff could not do enough to make this a memorable holiday for all of us, all so friendly and helpful. The decor is stunning, cabins spacious, all areas so clean, kept to such a high standard. The guide, Omar, was fabulous as usual, very knowledgeable and went out of his way to ensure we had a wonderful time, not only during the inclusive trips but also a coffee shop experience in his hometown. I can not rate this holiday company and MS Tulip & staff highly enough. Thank you for a memorable & wonderful holiday yet again! Carol, Somerset

We have just returned from one of your cruises on the MS Tulip (31st December to 7th January). I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone who made our holiday such an experience. All the staff were wonderful, helpful and the whole week was amazing. However, I want to make a special reference to our guide, Mohammed. What an absolute treasure you have there. Such knowledge and a lovely manner. As an archaeologist myself, with having had very little previous dealings with Egyptian Archaeology, I had a lot of questions and he showed so much patience. He really is an asset to your trips and I cannot praise him enough. I do hope he continues to work for you as he such a fabulous representative for both yourselves and Egypt. Many thanks again for a wonderful experience. Penny - Shropshire.

November 2018 - We had a great time on our 10 day Egypt tour / Nile cruise. We never had a problem and everything from meet & greet to hotels, cruises and tours were all looked after and properly arranged. Our Cairo guide, Mrs. Amal (Hope), was very helpful and amazingly knowledgeable. She interacted with the group and was very pleasant and sociable, even after those long, long days. The love for her job and pride for Egypt was evident. Our guide in Luxor, Mohamed Fouad, was equally up to the task! Mr. Fouad was always available to resolved issues and went out of his way to accommodate our wishes...even going off the tourist path to experience some amazing Turkish coffee at local coffee houses. His knowledge of the sites are exceptional, his kindness refreshing, his professionalism outstanding. Combining all of the above, from the time we set foot in Cairo, to the time we lifted it in Luxor, we can truly say we have discovered Egypt!

M/S Renaissance Nile Cruise

We booked a package combining a 7nights' stay at the hotel in Hurghada and 7 nights FB on MS Tut 1 via Travelodeal. Due to the low level of bookings MS Tut 1 was replaced by MS Rennaisance; we were staying in cabin 320 on the upper deck from 17-24 December 2023. The trip was fine, however the boat suffers from the lack of regular maintenance: towel rail next to the bathroom door was very loose and fell down easily. Washbasin was probably blocked as it drained very, very slowly. No instruction sheet was supplied for valuables - safe operation. Some number keys on safe door have holes/damage and cannot be read. We were only given one room card but two would be more convenient as two people sharing may have different activities and agendas. Bathroom extractor fan seemed ineefectual. More or less constant dripping noise onto bathroom ceiling, presumably from above needs investigation. It would be good to have another light in the hallway so that wardrobe contents are visible, especially on left hand side. We didn't have individual bedside reading lights in the room. More coat-hangers in wardrobe for guests' clothes would be good. Dust and detritus under beds needs to be swept/vacuumed away - we even found a pair of child socks under the bed.

We stayed on the Radamis 2. The boat looked very tired but it did have a certain character to it. The food wasn’t too bad at all especially the soups which were delicious. The staff especially haseein Noby who was the bar manager (I think) was so helpful and really made our stay. The door locks were a nightmare to get into and took ages so they need to change them. BUT be aware of the Havista reps!! They will harass you the moment you step on the boat for extra money for tips. We were asked to pay 35£ each on our first day on the boat. Apparently it was for the boat staff and the drivers on the excursions. My husband and I had already paid over the odds for the excursions of 260£ whereas others had paid 150-170£. I told the rep Mo that tips are paid at the end if we thought the service, excursions were good. This was not enough for this rep who was staying on the boat with us. Everyday he would plonk himself down at our table and harass us for money. It got so bad that a couple we met didn’t want to come out of their cabins in case they were accosted by him. One of the couples suffered from anxiety and it really affected his holiday. It got so bad that I literally had to tell him that this was causing us harassment t and distress. There were 4 other couples that we got together with who were having the same issue and together we had a meeting and told this Mo to go away. I spoke to the manager on the boat who said sometimes they get some of the money and the drivers of the excursions told me they don’t get any of the money and that most of it is pocketed. One driver asked me to complain direct to Havista travel which I will do. Do not be bullied by these reps. It really spoilt our holiday.

The MS Tulip Nile Cruise was absolutely wonderful. What I want to especially note is the outstanding jewelry gift shop on board. The jewelry is of outstanding quality and they stand by their customer service policy. My family brought three cartouche necklaces and various charms. Upon returning home to the USA my daughter experienced a problem with a 18K gold necklace brought at the shop. I contacted the cruise line and within one day I received a call from the owner. The problem was rectified and a new necklace arrived with two weeks. If you are blessed to travel on the MS Tulip Nile Cruise make sure you purchase your jewelry gifts while on board. You won’t regret it!

Excellent experience, our tour guide Amin was amazing and very knowledgeable, I recommend him 100 percent

We enjoyed a 7 night Nile cruise on the MS Nile Jewel early October 2023 as part of a 20 day trip to Egypt booked via Wowcher/Jetline/dealoftheday. As the original flights were cancelled we took the opportunity to extend the trip to include the Pyramids by changing the flights for free from a more local airport. Went as a couple but travelled on the Nile as a tour group of 8 (new friends) :) The Nile Jewel is one of the oldest and smallest boats but we felt that this was an advantage and we met many lovely people during our journey up/down the Nile. When moored, we were often located on the Nile side with lovely views with no obstruction. The boat is not 5* by European standards but the decor is nice and the rooms clean. The (plunge) pool is small and clean and was topped up regularly with cold water which was a relief due to the extreme heat we experienced. The tours were not included in the booking and we did not book any of the tours prior to arrival on board. Once on board, we booked Valley of Kings/Hatshepsut/Memnon & Abu Simbel. (cheaper than previously offered). Later in the week we added 2 half day tours - Sunset Felucca (Aswan) and next day - Bird Watching, Kitchener Island (botanical gardens), Nubian village and a dip (toes only) in the Nile for £35 each. I will detail the itinerary below for those doing all the trips. Day 1 - Arrived at midday from Hurghada by minibus after a 3 day hotel stay. Had paid for an upper cabin as it appears so had everyone else (buyer beware). Settled for a lower cabin as was towards the front of boat and had a nile view whilst docked. Met guide (Mohamed) from Hvezda who was fantastic throughout the week. Had a lovely lunch and chilled on deck/in pool in 44 degree heat whilst rest of group went on the Karnak/Luxor Temple tour. We could easily have done this trip ourselves. Day 2 - Up early for 6.30am start - Breakfast then Valley of Kings/Hatshepsut/Memnon. Fascinating, loved it. Called into a supermarket for some snacks on way back. Back for lunch, chill swim on deck after a nap and set sail (aound 4pm). The boat sellers around Esna lock provided evening entertainment. Day 3 - Rest of group had an early start to Edfu by minbus as they do not use the horse carriages. We had a lie in !! (Do wish we had booked this now) Security was tight and would not have felt confident doing this on our own. Sailed in the afternoon towards Kom Ombo. Rest of group went to temple. We had planned to get off but was 44 degrees and so so busy. Fumes were extreme as every other boat appeared to be there at the same time. Took some photos and sat inside bar area. Overnight sail to Aswan Day 4 - Rest of group had early start to Philae, Unfinished Obelisk & High Dam. We chilled on a quiet deck and enjoyed sights of Aswan. Went on a free tour to a Spice shop in Aswan which we enjoyed and overspent lol. Stick to 30/50g an item !! Day 5 - Abu Simbel, pick up at 5am with a breakfast box (not great). Journey was very long (took 5 hours there and 4.5 hours back) so tried to sleep as much as possible. Enjoyed time at Temple, beautiful setting and amazing to see but guide was rushed and temples were packed out and not organised like VoK. Rested in the afternoon and went on Felucca ride at Sunset in Aswan (loved this) Day 6 - After breakfast, motor boat to Kitchener Island (Botanical gardens) & nubian village Aswan sights and birdwatching on the way. Loved this trip. Set sail back to Luxor. Day 7 - Enjoyed most of day on deck sitting at front of boat taking in sights whilst sailing. New groups did Kom Ombo & Edfu on the way, so opportunity to get off if we wanted to but didn't. Arrived back in Luxor around teatime. We got off the boat and did an independent visit to Luxor museum with others we had met during the trip. Felt safe and had no issues walking to museum which was very interesting and worth a visit. Day 8 - After breakfast, we checked out of room and walked by ourselves to Luxor Temple with no issues. A few offers of lifts but accepted La Shukran eventually. Back on boat for midday for 1pm minibus pick up back to Hurghada. Notes: Food - We enjoyed the food and desserts on board and always found something we could eat/enjoy from the buffet. They did a set meal one night without asking about dietary needs which may not suit all. Bar - Our bar bill was £92 at the end of the week (mainly tonic/coffee/beer) for the week but we did take a duty free bottle of vodka to keep in room which kept spend down. See prices (Set/Oct 2023) All inclusive drinks - May be good value if you can negotiate price down and like to drink. Wine and beer were both good on board. Tips - Guide advised £10 per cabin per night, for cabin crew and drivers. Happy to pay this and just left a $1 a day on bed as an additional for housekeeping (against advice) Guide - Excellent. With the 6 other people in our group, we agreed £10 pp and handed over at end of trip. Boat - Even though old, we were not disappointed. The positioning in ports was great. Please do not expect 5* though. Staff were lovely. Spoke to other couples who were moored outside of Luxor town and hated it. Upper Cabin - We were convinced to upgrade to the upper cabin over the phone during booking process. As we did not receive this, Jetline have since refunded this payment. Tours - Overpriced if book upfront. Price will probably come down as you go through the chain. Most could be done/booked independently but need to fit in with boat itinerary. Times are displayed in lobby. Payment - Cash is preferred on board - EGP/Euro/$/£. We used ATMs with Monzo & Revolut without charge (apart from 1 atm). Could pay the bar bill with a card with 3% charge. Egypt - So much rubbish around the country. Very little respect for the environment which is very sad. Did not experience as much hassle as I had expected (even in Giza which we added on to the trip) Jetline/Hervezda - Our original flight was cancelled with no notification, the hotel Royal Lagoons was changed to Sea Star Beau Rivage and the start day of cruise was changed (to a day earlier) without prior notification. Not a real issue but feel the UK/Egypt suppliers should improve their communication with each other and their Customers. Enjoy - Remember you are in a different country with a different culture. Go with the flow and smile and enjoy the wonderful sights of the trip. Be aware and be careful but don't let the fear of scams or hassle spoil the experience.

The Best Mississippi River Cruises to Discover America's Heartland

By Jackie Sheckler Finch

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Land Nature Outdoors Plant Vegetation Tree Woodland and Water

The luxury ships and historic tours are nice, yes. But the real star of Mississippi River cruises has always been the river. There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

The challenge modern travelers now face is when, where, and how to go about this iconic American voyage . Below, see our answers to these frequently asked questions, plus our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024.

Which cruise lines do Mississippi River cruises?

After American Queen Voyages shut down in February, only two Mississippi River cruise lines currently remain in operation.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, American Cruise Lines (ACL) has a fleet of more than 20 American-built ships sailing across the country and remains family-owned and American-crewed. ACL offers a Mississippi River fleet of three luxurious 180-passenger modern riverboats– American Melody , American Symphony , and American Serenade —plus two classic paddlewheel ships, the 180-passenger American Splendor and the 150-passenger American Heritage.

The new kid on the Mississippi is the Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger, five-deck vessel that first set sail in September 2022. The cutting-edge cruise is Viking’s first foray in the US, adding to their fleet of more than 90 ocean, river, and expedition vessels navigating the world’s seven continents.

What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Viking offers complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines offers complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. Gratuities are also included in American Cruise Lines fares.

What is the best time of year to go on a river cruise?

Spring (late March through mid-June) and autumn (September through November) are the best times of year to go on a river cruise in the US. Spring blossoms add a colorful touch to the shoreline, and you can never go wrong with autumn foliage. The temperatures are mild, if not pleasantly cool, and passengers are eager to welcome a new spring travel season—or to enjoy one last autumn river adventure before winter arrives.

What month is best for a Mississippi River cruise?

If we had to pick just one, September is the best month for a Mississippi River cruise. The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.

Below, see our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024, featuring stops in iconic American cities like Nashville , Memphis , and New Orleans .

22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

Enjoy the charms of America’s great river on a journey aboard the Viking Mississippi from New Orleans to Red Wing, departing September 20. Custom built to sail American waters, the vessel features river-facing staterooms with either French or step-out balconies.

Stops include Baton Rouge and St. Francisville in Louisiana; Natchez, Vicksburg, Greenville, and Rosedale in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; Paducah in Kentucky; Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, and Hannibal in Missouri; Burlington, Quad Cities, and Dubuque in Iowa; La Crosse in Wisconsin; and ending in Red Wing, Minnesota.

With so many fascinating shore excursions to choose from, it’s well worth taking time to tour the St. Louis Arch . Opened in 1965, the monument to America’s westward expansion is far more than just a stunning photo by the riverside. Venture underground between the arch legs for a museum. Climb aboard a tram to be transported 630 feet up to the top of America’s tallest monument for some stunning views.

12-day Heart of the Delta: Memphis to New Orleans

The 386-guest Viking Mississippi spans five decks, making it one of the largest passenger vessels on the Mississippi. Inaugurated in 2022, the ship features a modern Scandinavian design with an infinity pool and a two-story Explorers’ Lounge observation area similar to its ocean ships. Directly in front of the Explorer’s Lounge is an expanded outdoor seating area known as The Bow. Three restaurants serve both Southern regional cuisine and international favorites.

The cruise starts in Memphis on November 14 and includes stops in Rosedale, Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez in Mississippi as well as St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow in Louisiana, ending in New Orleans. The “Mississippi Sings the Blues” shore excursion visits iconic sites along the Mississippi Blues Trail such as historic Dockery Farms, considered the “birthplace of the blues.”

The tour stops in Clarksdale, the fabled “Crossroads” where legend says blues great Robert Johnson reputedly sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his guitar prowess. Stops at the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi and the Delta Blues Museum completes this perfect trip for music lovers.

Nashville TN

9-day Music Cities Cruise: Nashville to Memphis

Music is the main focus of this cruise offered by American Cruise Lines, which begins in Nashville on July 9 with an unforgettable visit to the legendary Grand Ole Opry and ends in Memphis, where passengers will enjoy live music on Beale Street and a tour of Elvis Presley’s Graceland . On board the American Splendor, passengers will enjoy spacious cabins and popular rocking chairs. First inaugurated in 2016 and fully redecorated in 2022, this ship offers the nostalgia of a classic paddlewheeler along with the comfort of modern amenities.

While in Nashville, explore the Johnny Cash Museum, then walk upstairs to The Patsy Cline Museum. Nightly entertainment spotlights the musical heritage of this region as the world’s newest paddlewheeler journeys along the river. The itinerary also includes Clarksville and Dover in Tennessee plus Paducah in Kentucky. In Paducah, stroll along the riverfront with more than 50 life-sized panoramic murals depicting Paducah’s past. Stop by Paducah’s National Quilt Museum, the world’s largest museum devoted to quilt and fiber art.

12-day Mississippi River Gateway Cruise: New Orleans to St. Louis

From the French Quarter in New Orleans to the towering Gateway Arch in St. Louis , this American Heritage cruise lives up to its name. Inaugurated in 2015 and totally redecorated in 2022, the 84-cabin American Heritage is the perfect vessel for this interesting itinerary, its design reminiscent of the days when steamboat paddlewheelers plied the Mississippi in the 1800s.

The 12-day voyage departs from New Orleans on July 2. Ports of call along the way include Baton Rouge in Louisiana; Natchez and Vicksburg in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; and Paducah in Kentucky . An onboard expert shares tales of the importance of steam-driven paddlewheels in establishing riverfront communities along the great Mississippi River.

Step ashore in Natchez and enjoy a cold drink at the Under-the-Hill-Saloon, once one of the rowdiest establishments on the Mississippi River in the 1800s. Legend says that Mark Twain stopped here when he was just another riverman named Samuel Clemens.

9-day Lower Mississippi River Cruise: Memphis to New Orleans

This nine-day American Melody cruise departs Memphis on September 8 and features eight ports of call including Vicksburg and Natchez in Mississippi, and St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Houmas House in Louisiana. At Vicksburg Military Park, learn how the 101st Airborne Division got its “Screaming Eagles” nickname, plus the tale of its famous soldier, a young guitar player named Jimi Hendrix. At Houmas House, see the bedroom where Bette Davis stayed to film the 1964 movie Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte . Joan Crawford was the intended co-star but Bette and Joan feuded so Joan quit and Olivia de Havilland replaced her.

Launched in 2021, the five-deck American Melody has 91 staterooms, all with private balconies and full-length sliding glass doors. The ship has several spacious lounges, a fitness center, large dining room, café for casual dining, sun deck, library, and an impressive four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship. The ship’s unusual bow opens and lowers a platform for passengers to easily walk ashore.

9-day Upper Mississippi River Cruise: St. Louis to St. Paul

Board the American Symphony cruise ship to visit Mark Twain’s hometown and experience the real-life inspiration behind Life on the Mississippi, the classic memoir chronicling the author's days on the river as a steamboat pilot.

The 91-cabin American Symphony, recently inaugurated in 2022, has 100% private balcony accommodations and a unique bow that opens with a retractable gangway that can be extended for landings virtually anywhere. The ship also features lounges soaring 40 feet above the water with triple the glass of other riverboats for spectacular views. Comfy deck chairs welcome passengers to enjoy the undeveloped countryside, picturesque islands, and fascinating dams and navigation locks.

Departing September 27, this itinerary features seven ports of call including Muscatine and Dubuque in Iowa, and Winona and Red Wing in Minnesota. In Hannibal, visit the actual home—with a whitewashed Tom Sawyer fence—where Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) grew up. In Dubuque, see the 1989 “Field of Dreams” movie site known for the famous quote, “If you build it, they will come.”
