Hubbard Glacier excursion + how to book Princess wilderness excursion on a small boat from the cruise ship! 🏔 Alaska cruise travel blog

Hubbard Glacier is a sea day.

There’s a Hubbard Glacier excursion?!?!

There are excursions to get off the cruise ship on a sea day?!

Yes, there is a Hubbard Glacier excursion to get off the cruise ship and get closer to Hubbard Glacier!

You will be stepping off of the cruise ship directly onto a small boat!

It’s kind of like the water shuttle in a tender port … except you’ll be getting on a bigger boat.

hubbard glacier wilderness excursion from cruise ship. hubbard glacier small boat excursion. hubbard glacier sea day

If you see the Hubbard Glacier excursion offered during your cruise, you should decide NOW whether or not you want to do it.

If you do decide to do it, you should book NOW!

This is not something that you wait until you are on the cruise ship to do.

The Hubbard Glacier excursion is known to sell out.

I have an Alaska cruise in September, and pretty much the FIRST thing I did after I booked the cruise was book the Hubbard Glacier excursion!

That was in March. There were actually plenty of tickets available at that time so I thought maybe I was overreacting.

I have noticed that the most any Princess shore excursion will show available is 20 tickets, even if there are more than 20 tickets available. Since it was showing “20 tickets” left, I figured there must be tons of tickets left.

But when I checked the excursion in June, it was sold out!

So if you do nothing else upon booking your Alaska cruise, I say book the Hubbard Glacier excursion!

Well, if you think you will like it, that is! If you are going to Alaska for the glaciers, I think you will!

hubbard glacier excursion cost

If you missed the opportunity to do the Hubbard Glacier excursion because it’s sold out and you will be going to Whittier, I recommend checking out the 26 glacier boat tour in Whittier ! This is the reason why I’m excited for the Hubbard Glacier excursion! There is such a difference between seeing a glacier from a cruise ship and seeing it up close!

If you have an Alaska cruise booked, you can log into your account at princess.com and then go to the excursions section to search for the Hubbard Glacier excursion.

If you have an early season Alaska cruise or late season Alaska cruise, the Hubbard Glacier excursion may not be offered.

hubbard glacier excursion in september

I had an Alaska cruise in May .

The Hubbard Glacier sea day was on May 2.

There was no Hubbard Glacier excursion.

The day before we went to Hubbard Glacier, the captain even mentioned that it was uncertain whether or not we would be able to get close enough to see Hubbard Glacier at all.

It was unknown if there was going to be too much ice to get close.

It turns out we were able to see Hubbard Glacier and I am pretty sure the Princess naturalist even said it was the closest she has ever gotten to Hubbard Glacier.

I also have a second Alaska cruise in September that goes to Hubbard Glacier.

There is no Hubbard Glacier excursion offered on September 17.

More below about booking the Hubbard Glacier excursion!

  • cruise luggage tags
  • no-surge power strip
  • basic binoculars for wildlife watching on glacier sea days

How to book the Hubbard Glacier excursion

  • Go to princess.com and log into your account
  • Go to “my account”
  • Go to “manage this booking” for your Hubbard Glacier cruise
  • Go to “excursions”
  • Go to “view excursions” for Hubbard Glacier day

If you don’t see a spot to book the Hubbard Glacier excursion, I take it to mean that it is just not offered at all.

The exception to this would be if your Alaska cruise is still really far out and they just haven’t updated the excursions list.

Even if the excursion is sold out, it will still appear. It will just say that it’s sold out.

how to buy tickets for hubbard glacier excursion

Is the Hubbard Glacier excursion offered on the future cruise you are considering?

If you are look at doing an Alaska cruise with a Hubbard Glacier day in June, July, or August, then yes, I would assume that there will be a Hubbard Glacier excursion offered.

If you are considering an Alaska cruise in May or September, then there may not be a Hubbard Glacier excursion in early May or late September.

How to figure out if there’s a Hubbard Glacier excursion for a cruise you haven’t booked:

  • Go to princess.com
  • Go to the cruise itinerary for the specific sailing of the Alaska cruise you want to do
  • Look for Hubbard Glacier day
  • Click on “view excursions”
  • The Hubbard Glacier wilderness excursion is either there or it isn’t!

This is how I would go about figuring out if there is the Hubbard Glacier excursion offered on a future cruise.

This may not be a fool-proof way of figuring it out, but I think it works.

Actually I do think this method works, and I used it myself before booking my first September cruise. But I don’t want to be blamed in case you book it after doing this, and then find out it’s actually not offered. So, that’s my disclaimer. Book any cruise at your own risk! đŸ€Ș But again, this is how I figured it out for myself.

Also, if your Alaska cruise is still a really long time from now, it’s possible that the excursions list hasn’t been updated yet.

Now, if the cruise you’re looking at it just a few weeks away, it is a completely DIFFERENT thing to know whether or not the Hubbard Glacier excursion is actually AVAILABLE and not sold out before you book your cruise.

For that, if it’s really important to you, you might have to rely on the kindness of people.

Like, joining a facebook group that’s dedicated to the specific cruise ship or cruise date you’re looking at and hoping there is a kind soul who is booked on the cruise who won’t mind looking it up. I can tell you that on my Alaska cruise on the Grand Princess that starts on September 2, the Hubbard Glacier excursion is sold out.

hubbard glacier cruise port excursions

Do you NEED to do the Hubbard Glacier Wilderness Excursion in order for the Hubbard Glacier sea day to be worth it?

I have not yet done the Hubbard Glacier excursion. But I am booked for it in early September 2023!

And, I am super excited about it, because I have personally seen from another small boat glacier excursion that there is a BIG difference between seen a glacier from a cruise ship vs seeing it from a small(er) boat!

So I am expecting the Hubbard Glacier excursion to be an amazing experience!

Although side note. It’s also possible for these types of excursions to be affected by weather, so it’s also important to manage your expectations!

This is just how it is in Alaska. For example, it’s not uncommon for dog sledding tours in Alaska to get canceled… sometimes even at the last minute.

While it may seem like the cruise ship gets pretty close to Hubbard Glacier, the reality is that you are still pretty far.

The Hubbard Glacier excursion will allow you to get even closer to Hubbard Glacier!

Of course, what is worth it to one person is not a big deal to another.

But if you are in Alaska for glaciers, then I would say there’s a good chance that you will think that the Hubbard Glacier excursion is really great.

That said, you don’t need to do the excursion in order to have a perfect Hubbard Glacier sea day.

Because really, if it’s your first Alaska cruise, you won’t have anything to compare it to (aka the small boat excursion), so you will think the views from the cruise ship are incredible!

As long as the cruise ship is able to get to Hubbard Glacier. Again, weather and other sea conditions will control how far in the cruise ship will go, although it will never go in as close as the small boat goes.

You will love any experience of seeing any glacier from a cruise ship if it’s new to you!

But I imagine that taking a small boat will give you EVEN BETTER views of Hubbard Glacier!

I say this based on my College Fjord glacier experience!

I first saw College Fjord from a cruise ship.

Then, not expecting much, I saw College Fjord from a small boat the next day.

What a difference!!!!

When I was on the small boat, I couldn’t even tell that it was what I saw the day before!

I was actually very confused and I was trying to get oriented with where we were on the small boat vs where the cruise ship was!

And that’s a bit about the Hubbard Glacier sea day!

In our signature day-by-day Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise review, we detail our time sailing the region with Princess Cruises.

Ship overview.

For this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise review, we hopped onboard Majestic Princess for a 7-day southbound itinerary from Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Our first Princess cruise was actually on this ship to Alaska back in 2021 . So, we were already quite familiar with Majestic Princess and couldn’t wait to get back onboard.

Majestic Princess is the third vessel in the Royal Class of ships. The newest ship in this class, Discovery Princess , is also sailing in Alaska this season round-trip from Seattle, Washington. In fact, Majestic Princess is just one of seven Princess ships in the region.

WATCH OUR COMPLETE PRINCESS ALASKA CRUISE REVIEW VIDEO!

At 144K gross tons, Majestic Princess offers its 3,500+ guests a variety of amenities and features that are signature to Princess Cruises. However, originally debuting for the Chinese market, there are still hints of Asian-influence on the vessel. From the western-themed Conservatory, to the signage, and the cruise line’s only Harmony Chinese restaurant, Majestic Princess is a bit distinct from her sister ships.

Still, the ship features two outdoor pools, one adult-only indoor pool, and a sports deck. There are also several bars and lounges, restaurants, and entertainment spaces to keep guests entertained between ports of call. Majestic Princess features all the usual cruise activities like nightly production shows in the main theater, trivia, game shows, Bingo, Movies Under the Stars, and live music.

While in Alaska, the centrally located signature Piazza is the ideal spot to relax or socialize on a chilly sea day. Those looking for enrichment will enjoy the North to Alaska programming featuring onboard naturalists and experts who host engaging talks on the history, culture, and wildlife of the region.

Princess Cruises to Alaska: The Pros and Cons

New for 2023, Princess is also offering an expanded Wild for Alaska Seafood menu. Guests can expect extensive menus offering a rotation of fresh Alaska seafood dishes. Not to mention, Majestic Princess is now home to a brand new specialty restaurant.

Replacing Bistro Sur La Mer, The Catch by Rudi is the first Princess restaurant primarily devoted to seafood. The creative dishes and attractive price of $39 per person will certainly lure you in.

Finally, Majestic Princess and the rest of the Princess fleet offer MedallionClass technology to make your vacation more personalized and contactless. Features include OceanNow where you can order food and drinks anywhere on the ship, keyless stateroom entry, and much more.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Day 1

A pre-cruise stay in anchorage.

For this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review, we had to fly from Boston to Anchorage. Given the extended travel time, we decided to fly into the area a couple days early. We secured a 2-night hotel stay in Anchorage at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Midtown given there was limited availability when we booked rather last minute.

While the hotel was acceptable for our short stay, we would likely look for a nicer hotel when visiting in the future. Local recommendations included the Marriott, Hilton, or Hotel Captain Cook.

Prior to our departure, we booked a tour for our full pre-cruise day on Friday. This tour included a scenic drive down Turnagain Arm, stops at Explorer Glacier and lookout points along the way, a cruise on Portage Lake, and a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

However, a few days prior to our tour, we were notified that the boat for the cruise portion on Portage Lake was undergoing repairs and thus would not be part of our tour. Still, Jeremy from Alaska Exquisite Travel did a great job providing narration during the newly shortened tour. This small group tour was a great introduction to the area, and the scenery was amazing.

We capped off the wonderful day with a meal at 49th State Brewing and caught up on much needed sleep before embarking Majestic Princess.

Onward to Whittier

Since we were hosted by Princess Cruises on this sailing, the cruise line arranged a private transfer for us from the hotel to the cruise port in Whittier on embarkation day. This drive is about 1.5 hours, and the cruise terminal can only be accessed by a one lane tunnel. This means that your transportation needs to be timed appropriately.

Getting picked up at our hotel promptly at 11:15 AM, we set off along a similar route from yesterday. Upon arriving in Whittier, our driver gave us a brief overview and drive around “town”. Of note, if you are cruising from this port, you will need to secure accommodations in Anchorage and make this same drive on embarkation day as Whittier has few amenities.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Once at the cruise terminal, we dropped off our bags and headed inside. Unfortunately, our Medallions did not arrive at our house until after we left for this trip. Thus, the check-in process took a bit longer. Those cruisers who had their Medallions breezed through check-in, security, and onto the ship in no time.

For us, we needed to wait in a small line of other passengers either picking up their Medallions at the terminal or those who did not receive them like ourselves. With some tech issues, it took about 30 minutes to receive a keycard that would allow us on the ship. We then needed to have Medallions printed at Guest Services.

Officially Onboard Majestic Princess

Officially boarding the ship around 1:45 PM, we made our way to Guest Services for our Medallions. Surprisingly, the ship felt like a ghost town. So, we took this opportunity to take some photos and videos of the specialty restaurants, piazza, and a few nearby areas before heading to our cabin.

Given that it was later in the afternoon, the staterooms were ready, so dropping off our carry-on gear was the second order of business.

Unlike most contemporary cruise lines, the standard balcony cabins on Princess Cruises do not come with a sofa or sitting area. With all our gear and Don working remotely from the ship, this extra space is essential for us. We decided to place an upgrade bid from our standard balcony to a premium deluxe balcony cabin.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

With a winning bid, we were assigned stateroom D717. This cabin is located pretty aft on the starboard side of Deck 9, the Dolphin deck. With the exception of the extra sitting area with a loveseat and small table, the room was identical to the one we previously had on Majestic Princess. However, the balcony is noticeably larger which was an added bonus for cruising in Alaska.

Dropping off our gear and taking videos and photos of the cabin, we headed off to get reacquainted with the rest of the ship. But first, we watched the mandatory safety briefing on the television and checked in at our assembly station.

Since we had dinner at 6:20 PM tonight, but hadn’t eaten anything all day, we grabbed a quick snack and some caffeine at the International CafĂ© during our explorations. We also made sure to check out the spa and get our sticker for the thermal suite.

Our First Evening on Majestic Princess

After admiring the views from the pool deck, we headed back to our cabin to unpack and settle in for the week prior to dinner. Our dinner tonight was at the Concerto main dining room.

With Dine My Way, guests can make reservations in the app for the same time the entire cruise or different times each night. Guests also have the option to dine at a shared table or a private table.

With the expanded Wild for Alaska Seafood menu, we were excited to test out the new options. Well, mostly Don since I don’t eat seafood. Each evening, the menu features items designated as “Local Eats Alaska Flavors”. Tonight, Don sampled the Bering Seafood Stew and the Alaskan Ale-Braised Short Ribs, and he really enjoyed the stew.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Dinner tonight took about 90 minutes which is on par with most of our MDR experiences across various cruise lines. Following dinner, we grab some seats and drinks at the Good Spirits Bar in time for the Sail Away party taking place in the piazza at 8:30 PM. Actually, our sail away had been delayed as one of the trains taking passengers to the ship was late arriving, but the party still occurred nonetheless.

We stuck around for about 30 minutes then headed to the theater for the first headliner act of the cruise, the comedian Tony Daro. This show started late as they were awaiting the Captain’s announcement and emergency alarms. Unfortunately though, the comedian’s show ended up being interrupted with such. Still, he provided a few laughs before we retired for the evening.

We still had not adjusted to the four hour time difference, and we wanted to make sure we were well rested for the remainder of the cruise. Tomorrow was our first glacier viewing opportunity.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Day 2

A morning of enrichment.

Day 2 of this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review was a scenic day of cruising. Today, we would be viewing Hubbard Glacier for the first time. We get asked all the time whether Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay is better, and now we could finally give an informed opinion.

Up around 6:30 AM, Don set off on his typical morning routine to secure photos and videos and returned to the cabin with our morning coffees. We then headed out to the World Fresh Marketplace for breakfast around 9 AM.

Unfortunately, this buffet was very busy and not well laid out causing much congestion. It took us quite some time as well to locate the omelet station. The food itself was rather underwhelming too, so we ended up avoiding the buffet for the remainder of the cruise.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

The sun was shining and the temperature was mild, so we strolled around outside for a bit collecting some menus and more photos before attending the first North to Alaska presentation at 11:15 AM. This Welcome to Alaska talk was with a Tlingit princess, Rachel Moreno. She provided some insight into the history, culture, and language of her tribe.

With another enrichment talk on whales occurring at 1:15 PM, we decided to grab some lunch at Alfredo’s in between. We loved this venue during our two previous Princess cruises, and this time did not disappoint either.

We somehow managed to beat the crowds and only waited 10 minutes for a table. The pizza was just as good as we remembered it!

Princess Cruises to Alaska: The Pros and Cons

Following lunch, it was back to the theater for a presentation by the naturalist, Mark Harris. While he was informative, he wasn’t the best naturalist that we’ve had on our Alaska cruises.

Our First Visit to Hubbard Glacier

Ending right around 2 PM, this gave us enough time to grab some afternoon caffeine and get prepared for our first glacier viewing of the cruise.

While it was sunny this morning, this is Alaska. The weather changed rather quickly and alternated between rain and clouds the rest of the afternoon. We started off outside on deck 17 but ended up back on our balcony when it started raining heavier. This is certainly a perk of having a balcony in Alaska.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Given the weather conditions, we did not get as good of a view as we hoped. Still, we did get to see the Hubbard Glacier through the rain and fog from several vantage points on the ship. This pretty much comprised the rest of our afternoon until dinner time.

Formal Night in Alaska

Tonight was the first formal night of the cruise, and it was back to the main dining room for dinner this evening. With a 7 PM reservation in Symphony, we tested out more of the new menu items. While we remember not liking the MDR during our previous sailing on Majestic Princess, this time our opinions were more favorable.

Don sampled the Alaskan Crab Cake, the Halibut with prosciutto, and the beef tenderloin. He enjoyed the crab cake and the beef tenderloin. Since there wasn’t much on the menu that I liked, I went with one of the Princess Favorites, fettucine alfredo. While Royal Caribbean has removed “classics” from its MDR menus, Princess does still feature a set of classic dishes each evening.

While there were other passengers dressed for formal night, the vibe on Alaska cruises is more casual. So, this meant that there were fewer guests dressed up than you might find in the Caribbean.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Out of dinner in about 90 minutes again tonight, we jetted over to Princess Live for the 8:30 PM game show, Yes or No. We enjoy this venue and the nightly game shows that occur here. Although, we have to admit that DuVaul from our previous Princess cruise was a funnier host than our current cruise director Kevin. It seemed at times that he and the other activities staff were rushing though the events.

From Princess Live, it was back to the theater for the first production show of the cruise, Encore. When weighing the pros and cons of Princess Cruises in Alaska , there are several pros but entertainment is not one of them. These shows are your typical cruise ship revue shows and don’t hold up to the elaborate productions found on newer Royal Caribbean or NCL ships.

Following the show, we closed out the night in the Vista Lounge with the 10:30 PM comedy show and a round of drinks.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Day 3

Back to glacier bay national park.

Day 3 of this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review was our second “sea day” in a row. Today, we would be visiting Glacier Bay National Park. We visited Glacier Bay for the first time in 2021 and highly recommend you book an itinerary that visits here too.

The weather during our last trip into this National Park was fantastic, and it’s almost like today was trying to one-up that experience. Unlike the weather yesterday in Yakutat Bay, it remained sunny and mild all day today.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

We would not be arriving at the Margerie Glacier until around 1:30 PM, so we had the morning to ourselves. Up around 7 AM, we got ready for the day while listening to some commentary from the naturalist on the bridge channel.

Also, Princess had arranged for us to have a balcony breakfast this morning, and it turned out to be the perfect day for it!

Scheduling our breakfast for 9 AM, we enjoyed the food and the views, along with some mimosas. We did head out shortly after though to attend the Ranger presentation occurring in the theater at 10 AM. Attending these presentations is definitely one of our expert Alaska cruise tips ! Even if you have cruised this region before, each ranger provides a different personal narrative.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

The rangers also set up an informal information desk in the Hollywood Conservatory for the day and provide bridge commentary intermittently during the scenic cruising in the area. Thus, we made sure to stop in for a bit.

A Beautiful Day to See Some Glaciers

Given the weather was so nice, we spent most of the day outside on the upper decks. Not that we like them, but there was even a Bloody Mary Bar. Taking plenty of photos, and maybe enjoying an Alaska beer, we got our first glimpse of Margerie Glacier right as predicted around 1:30 PM on the portside of the ship.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

The ship stays here for about an hour and does a complete 360′ turn, so you will have the same view from both sides. Around 2 PM when the ship starting repositioning, we headed downstairs to our starboard side cabin for some additional viewing.

While the Margerie Glacier is the most picturesque, we also saw the Grand Pacific Glacier, John Hopkins Glacier, Lamplugh Glacier, and Reid Glacier. During this time of year, cruise ships can not head down to John Hopkins Glacier due to the harbor seals, but we could see it clearly from Jaw Point even though it was 6 miles away.

Testing Out a Brand New Princess Restaurant

After a full day of glacier viewing, we relaxed and did some work until it was time for dinner. Tonight, we were testing out a brand new specialty restaurant on Princess Cruises. The Catch by Rudi is the cruise line’s first seafood restaurant. It has replaced the former Bistro Sur La Mer on Majestic Princess. It is also being added to Enchanted, Sky, and Discovery Princess.

At just $39 per person, this specialty restaurant is leaps and bounds better than the former Bistro Sur La Mer. While the dĂ©cor of the venue hasn’t changed much, the menu options were all fresh and flavorful. If you have cruised on Holland America before, this new restaurant felt very reminiscent of Rudi’s Sel De Mer with many similar dishes.

All guests are greeted with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and a goat cheese and pesto spread served with a French baguette. Despite being a seafood restaurant, there are options for non-seafood lovers like myself. We sampled many dishes from the menu this evening including the marinated lobster tail (Tale of Citrus), cheese plate, and calamari as starters.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

For entrees, Don ordered the Sea & Shore, while I tried the Spaghetti alle Vongole. Don was also eyeing the Concerto which is a pasta dish with seafood, but it contained scallops to which he is allergic. We finished off the meal with a Salzburger Nockerl and profiteroles.

All the items were delicious, but the entire experience did take well over two hours. This meant that we missed the Princess Live show tonight. Instead, we grabbed a quick drink at Vines and caught the end of the “Night at the Klondike” taking place in the piazza before heading to the theater for tonight’s headliner act, Reggie Rice. Reggie is a comedian magician with lots of energy.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

With not much else happening onboard the ship besides live music, we decided to call it a night after the show. Tomorrow was our first official port of call in Icy Strait Point.

SCORE BIG ON PRINCESS CRUISES TO ALASKA!

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Day 4

Welcome to icy strait point.

Day 4 of this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review had us calling in Icy Strait Point for a full day. While our shore excursion meeting time was not until 1:10 PM, port congestion complicated things a bit.

Arriving at 7 AM (actually we were docked here overnight), guests could go ashore until 11:30 AM. At this time, operations would pause until 1:30 PM so the ship could move into an anchored position. Unfortunately, Majestic Princess had to give up its docking spot to Celebrity Eclipse when the ship arrived. This meant that from 1:30 PM on, guests needed to take a tender to and from the ship.

Since Don was working remotely this week, we were up at 5:45 AM for him to attend some meetings on EST. We made sure to be ready to head ashore just before operations halted at 11:30 AM. Docking near Wilderness Landing, we took the free gondola (the green transporter) over to the main area near the cannery.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

We walked this boardwalk and beach area for about an hour, browsing the museum and shops along the way. Heading back to our starting point, we checked in for our shore excursion a bit early. While you are allowed to take your belongings on the ZipRider, we opted to leave them in a locker down here.

Included with the ZipRider shore excursion is the Sky Glider (the red gondola). This is the transportation up to the starting point for the zipline. Guests can also purchase passes to ride the Sky Glider as there are some fabulous views from the top. Although, there isn’t much else.

Getting Ready to Fly

Arriving a few minutes early, we took some photos with the Juneau Icefield as the backdrop and the lovely Majestic Princess anchored down below. Upon checking in for the ZipRider, we were given some basic directions and instructed to watch out for bears as we took the fairly steep downhill path to the landing platform.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

When we arrived, we were the only two guests. So, we had the 6-lane course to ourselves. With a vertical drop of 1,330 feet, we zipped down this 5,330 foot long ride at speeds of 60+ miles per hour. As the world’s “largest ZipRider”, this 90-second thrill is a lot of fun. We suggest that you muster up the courage to take flight during your visit to Icy Strait Point.

Landing back down near the Ocean Landing dock, we had to take the green gondola system back up to the Wilderness Landing dock to grab our bags from the locker. Since our tickets gave us all day access to the Sky Glider, we decided to take it back up to the top one more time for some additional photos.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

While here, we stumbled upon a guided hike along the 1-mile Hidden Lake Loop Trail. This is a complimentary activity and really the only other attraction up at Sky Peak currently. Guests could not explore this trail on their own due to bear activity. This walk took about 40 minutes with some stops and commentary along the way.

We decided to head back to the ship just after 3 PM. Apparently, we were not alone as there was a very long line of guests waiting to tender back to the ship. We ended up waiting in line for over 30 minutes.

Our Typical Nighttime Routine

Back onboard, we need a little snack to hold us over until dinner. So, we grabbed sandwiches at the outdoor grill. I had a chicken sandwich and Don had a burger. Neither were good as they were both over-cooked.

Princess Cruises to Alaska: The Pros and Cons

We then headed back to our room to relax and do a little work before dinner. Tonight was back to the main dining room. We had a reservation for 6:40 PM at Allegro.

The menu’s theme was Italian Night. While our waiter was nice, the service was pretty slow tonight taking about 2 hours. I sampled the arancini and the chicken parm which were both good. Don ordered the seafood antipasto and the Wild Alaskan Salmon which is one of the Princess Favorites.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

While the description for the appetizer did not include scallops, there was clearly scallops on the plate, so Don had to pass on this dish. He did enjoy the salmon entrée though. Unfortunately, out of our seven meals, staff only asked about allergies on a few occasions.

Out of dinner late, we missed most of the game show in Princess Live yet again. Tonight’s main theater show was Fantastic Journey. Of the three production shows, this was by far our favorite. It was the most technologically advanced show, and it had modern music and elaborate costumes.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Following the show, we grabbed some cocktails at the Crown Grill Bar and listened to the piano player Arny for a bit. When he took a break, we called it a night. Tomorrow was a big day in Juneau.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Day 5

Welcome to juneau.

Day 5 of this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review took us to Juneau. Today, we had a long anticipated excursion booked, dogsledding on the Mendenhall Glacier by helicopter. We have had this excursion booked, and cancelled, twice now.

The first time back in 2014, we were able to complete the helicopter portion but the dogsledding portion was cancelled for some reason. In September 2018, we tried again. And as luck would have it, the dogs were moved off the glacier earlier in the season than usual cancelling our tour yet again.

Today would be our third attempt. Fingers crossed!

Once again, we were up early for Don to complete some work meetings on EST before heading ashore. Thankfully, with early morning arrivals in port, the combination of WiFi and our cellular service allowed him to work without too much issue.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

With our tour scheduled to meet on the pier at 9:30 AM, we headed ashore slightly before then. After checking in and waiting for the rest of the group to arrive, we were shuttled to the Temsco helicopter port. Here, we completed a safety briefing, geared up in some glacier walking boots, and were divided into groups.

Just before 10:30 AM, we were prepared to take flight!

Third Time’s a Charm

Leaving the helipad, we took the approximately 15 minute helicopter ride out to the Mendenhall Glacier admiring the scenery along the way. Landing on the glacier, alas, there was the dogsledding base camp.

Here, we met the mushers and received a brief overview. We were then divided into groups of four and led to a sled. The entire experience lasted about a half hour including actual run time with some stops along the way for Q&A and to interact with the dogs. We switched spots with the other couple midway through, so we could experience different vantage points.

While pricey and short, it was a memorable experience, and we are glad that we were finally able to experience it. With just about an hour of total time on the glacier, it was time to reboard the helicopter for our return trip. The visibility had deteriorated a bit, so they were actually questioning whether they were going to cancel the afternoon timeslots. Phew!

Back on land, it had started raining. Thus, we opted to return to the ship instead of walking around the downtown area. We would be returning to Juneau in just a couple weeks on our second trip to Alaska this season.

We were back onboard the ship by around 12:30 PM and headed to Alfredo’s for some lunch. With coffee in hand, we then went back to the cabin for some work before the 3 PM North to Alaska presentation.

It was a dog mushing kind of day! The first female Iditarod race winner, Libby Riddles, gave this enrichment talk. It was fascinating to listen to her story and race to victory. Let’s just say that I would not have survived.

More Dining and Entertainment

For dinner tonight, we were testing out our second specialty restaurant, Harmony, at 6:40 PM. Given its nods to the Asian market, Majestic Princess still has an Asian restaurant in place of where Sabatini’s would be on other ships.

We sampled multiple items on the menu, and the food was quite good. From spring rolls and spare ribs to won ton soup, to kung pao chicken, stir-fried shrimp, Cantonese chow mein, fried rice, and even green tea cheesecake, we tasted it all.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

After this multi-course feast, we waddled our way over to the Piazza Bar just in time for the Love Boat party in the piazza at 8:30 PM. This game show type event featured four couples competing in different challenges.

Along with many other guests, we then headed to the theater for the 9:30 PM headliner show, The Mighty Quinn. This show consisted of mostly juggling and comedy, culminating with some juggling on a 10-foot unicycle.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Unlike some other cruise lines, there is not much nightlife on Princess Cruises. You won’t find a silent disco or dedicated nightclub. Instead, there is live music in a few different venues and a DJ that plays in the piazza. So, we grabbed some drinks at Good Spirits and listed to the band perform before calling it a night.

Tomorrow was our final port of call. Where did the week go?

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Day 6

Welcome to ketchikan.

Day 6 of this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review was our final port of call in Ketchikan.

Once again, Don was up early to complete some work meetings and obligations before heading ashore. He also grabbed us some coffee and breakfast sandwiches from International CafĂ© as we didn’t have to meet until 10:30 AM for our tour.

Our tour today was a visit to the Saxman Totem Park. Unfortunately, it was the least organized and least informative excursion of our trip. After meeting our bus, we took the short drive out to the park with our driver providing some commentary along the way.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Upon arrival, we were ushered into a clan house where we watched a quick tribal dance. We then got a brief introduction to some of the totem poles on the grounds including the types of poles and the stories behind them. Without much time for photos or questions, we were quickly escorted to the carving house, where our guide provided some narration.

While there were two works being completed, including one by the famed Nathan Jackson, both artists were “on lunch break” which was a bit disappointing. We then had only 20 minutes of free time before needing to be back at the bus.

Some Sun and Snacks

Given it was such a gorgeous day with no signs of rain in one of the rainiest cities, we ventured out on a walk after our tour. Following the boardwalk, we stopped for photos at the Ketchikan sign and eventually made our way over to Creek Street.

Back onboard the ship around 2 PM, it was time to test out the new premium desserts. These desserts are included in the Princess Plus and Princess Premier pricing options. Guests with Princess Plus get two desserts while Princess Premier get unlimited desserts.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

These desserts are essentially ice cream sundaes that make for great Instagram photos. There are six different options, and you can add alcohol if you choose. Although, after sampling a few of them, they all pretty much tasted the same. They are certainly not the crazy concoctions that you can get at Coco’s on NCL.

Enjoying the beautiful weather a bit longer, we eventually headed back to our room to do some work before dinner. Tonight, we had a 6:20 PM reservation at the final specialty restaurant, Crown Grill. It was also the ship’s second formal night.

A Formal Affair

Off to the Crown Grill, we started with our classic cocktails, a cosmo and a sidecar. For some reason, this was one of the few times all cruise that the drinks were actually made properly. No one seemed to know what a sidecar was even though it is on the menu, and I got my cosmo served on the rocks more times than not.

Given that the Crown Grill menu only features steak and seafood, I requested an alternate entrée. The staff were happy to oblige and offered me a selection off The Catch menu. Thus, I ordered the goat cheese souffle (Garden Vegetarian). For starters, I did the Black and Blue Onion Soup and a salad.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Don ordered the tiger prawns and the lobster cake for starters and the Rib-Eye for his entrée. We finished off this filling meal with the yummy salted caramel crÚme brulee cheesecake.

Overall, The Catch was our best specialty dining experience of this cruise.

Of note, this second formal night was lobster night in the main dining room. Much like other cruise lines, the Land & Sea selection now comes with a $10 surcharge for guests wanting more than one entrée.

With dinner clocking it at over two hours again tonight, we arrived to Princess Live late for the end of a standing room only Liar’s Club game show. This show is always a good time, and tonight’s version did not disappoint.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

From here, it was off to the theater for the final production show, Sweet Soul Music. This revue show featured several Motown hits and was a pretty typical cruise ship production.

Next on the agenda was a “street performance” type show in the piazza with The Mighty Quinn. He performed a couple juggling acts during this 15-minute set, which were very similar to his previous show in the theater.

We then decided to check out the Midnight Sun Experience in the Hollywood Conservatory. It was described as a camp fire-style vibe with acoustic music from Cola Sounds, hot chocolate, and warm cookies. Well, one of the three were present.

The venue was pretty empty and there was no hot chocolate or cookies. One of the activities staff later announced that this only occurs in Skagway. Because cookies and hot chocolate are only available in Skagway?!?! In any case, we listened to the duo perform, who were probably the best musical act on the ship.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

When they took a break ,we moved on to the Crown Grill bar for some martinis before calling it a night, the Milky Way was one of my favs. Tomorrow was already the last day of our Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Day 7

The perfect sea day.

Day 7 of this Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review was a sea day as we made our way to Vancouver, BC.

Turning our clocks ahead one hour before bed last night, we set the alarm for 7 AM. Fueled with some coffee, we spent much of the morning working and capturing our remaining photo and video content. We also sampled the juice bar along the way. This is located at the Wake View Bar aft on deck 16 and is covered in the drink packages.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

It was yet another beautiful day onboard Majestic Princess. We truly got lucky with the weather this trip. We will be returning to Alaska in two weeks on Norwegian Encore and can only hope that the weather is half as nice.

For our final lunch, I decided to give the grill another try while Don got some noodles from the nearby noodle bar (where Slice would be on other Royal Class ships). I sampled the chicken tacos this time, and they did not change our opinion of the grill. In comparison, the Dive-In burger bar on Holland America ships is much better.

While some press materials have indicated the ships would have featured Alaskan cocktails this season, we did not have any luck sampling them. They were not on any menus yet. One bartender did show us the staff version of the drink menus/recipes, but most bartenders knew nothing of them nor had the ingredients to make them even after we showed them. Oh well, they sounded tasty.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Grabbing our afternoon coffee, we headed to the theater for the 1:15 PM Deal or No Deal game show. We purchased a card to play along for $25; however, you can just simply watch the game show if you want.

Finally Checking Out the Enclave

After the show, we went back to the cabin to change up and finally check out the Enclave. Princess Cruises had given us a week-long pass to this thermal suite, but we had yet to use it. So, now was our chance. We spent about 1.5 hours here enjoying the heated loungers, therapy pool, sauna, and steam rooms.

When compared to some other thermal suites, it is rather small. It also does not feature a salt room, which is my personal favorite.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Feeling a bit rejuvenated, the time had come for the most dreaded chore of the trip…packing. While we had a transfer to the airport, it did not meet until after 9 AM which was too late for us. So, we decided to do self assist walk-off which began around 8 AM. This meant we did not need to leave our luggage out this evening, but we still wanted to pack up anyway.

Our Final Night Onboard Majestic Princess

Our final dinner of the cruise was at 6:20 PM in the Concerto main dining room. This was the quickest dinner of the cruise even though it featured the Baked Alaska parade. Tonight, I enjoyed the watermelon and feta salad, spinach ricotta ravioli, and the Baked Alaska of course. Don tested out the salmon cake, sweet and sour shrimp, and the pork belly. The highlight for him was the pork belly entrée.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Finished early, we grabbed seats in Princes Live for the Hollywood Hiccups game show, which was hilarious. The show consisted of the activities staff acting out scenes from famous movies. Let’s just say that Rose and Jack may have made an appearance.

Following routine, we made our way to the theater for a second, all-new show from Reggie Rice. Unlike some other cruise lines, there was no late-night comedy. This was the one and only show in the theater this evening. Personally, we enjoyed his first show from earlier in the week better.

After the show, we got a final round of drinks at the Double Down bar and called it a night around 11:30 PM.

Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review – Disembarkation

A long day of travel.

Our Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review had come to an end. Today was disembarkation day in Vancouver.

Up around 6 AM to shower, get ready, and finish packing, we were surprised to see that we were still sailing into Vancouver. We watched the sail under the Lion’s Gate bridge, past Stanley Park, and into the Canada Place cruise terminal.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Grabbing some coffee and breakfast sandwiches from International Café, we were ready by 8 AM. Not hearing any announcements yet, we decided to head down to deck 6 anyway. Don was able to hop in an elevator pretty quickly with two of our bags, but I waited another 10 minutes or so for one with enough room for me and our additional bag.

Guests were already scanning off the ship when we arrived. This might have been our quickest disembarkation ever. We were off the ship and in a taxi headed to the Vancouver airport in no time. This taxi ride is a flat fee of $38. At least our travel day started off smoothly.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

With fast WiFi, we were able to get quite a bit of work done in the airport until our flight. But things went downhill from here.

Unexpected Delays

Boarding the plane on time, we sat and waited forever, with the pilot suggesting it was taking longer than expected to load luggage. This in turn triggered a need to switch flight attendants which delayed us taking off by 1.5 hours. Of course, we only had a 1.5 hour layover in Toronto so things were not looking good for us.

It turns out a majority of passengers on our plane missed their connectors and were rescheduled to new flights. The only problem was that our new flight back to Boston wasn’t until tomorrow morning! Booking a room at the Toronto Sheraton airport hotel, we got some room service and a few hours of shuteye before attempting to get home once again.

hubbard glacier princess cruise

While we got home without issue this time, our bags were not so lucky. Even though Air Canada told us our bags were checked to our final destination, they did not arrive with us on the plane. With much of an ordeal, we finally had our bags over a day later. Moral of the story is that we will not be flying with Air Canada again any time soon.

Albeit late, we were back home for just under a week. Laundry, packing, and working were on the agenda before flying to Seattle for our next Alaska cruise departing June 4th. Stay tuned!

Hubbard Glacier, AK

While most of the world's glaciers are receding, North America's largest tidewater glacier is advancing. At 76 miles long and 7 miles wide, Hubbard Glacier presents a majestic sight for passengers cruising across Yakutat Bay on the Alaskan panhandle. One of the behemoth's most impressive stunts is the same reason ships must keep a safe distance from the spot where it occupies Disenchantment Bay: The glacier calves frequently, meaning that large chunks of ice break off from its face and plunge into the water below, creating icebergs. In addition to witnessing this spectacle of nature, keen eyes also can catch glimpses of the area's wildlife, which includes harbor seals, orcas and humpback whales.

What To Expect On A Hubbard Glacier Cruise

Visiting Hubbard Glacier on a cruise

When I chose my first cruise to Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, little did I know I’d be seeing North America’s largest tidewater glacier. Advancing at a rapid rate, Hubbard, otherwise known as the “galloping glacier,” wows cruise passengers with its turquoise hues, massive size, and spectacular calving action.

At its terminus, its face measures 600 feet, with 350 of it above the waterline. Located in Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve, it’s further north than Glacier Bay National Park.

Where Is Hubbard Glacier?

I still remember the slow and quiet approach to Disenchantment Bay on my  inside passage Alaska cruise . While I had experienced numerous spectacular glaciers over the years, I had always viewed them from solid ground. This was the first Alaska adventure of what later came to be a recurring affair.

I chose to sail a Celebrity Alaska cruise from Vancouver, from the advice of my travel agent and researching Alaska itinerary reviews. My encounter left me so captivated that it launched me into an era hungry to experience more.

Not only is Hubbard Glacier the largest tidewater glacier in North America, but it’s also the longest tidewater glacier in the world. It’s important to note it can only be seen by air or by boat. Hubbard Lacier is located north of Juneau, in the Wrangell–St. Elias National Park.

Taking photos of Hubbard Glacier on a cruise and harbor seals on an iceberg

The “galloping glacier” has been thickening and advancing into Disenchantment Bay ever since measurements began in the late 1800s.

Don’t be disappointed if your cruise ship isn’t cruising Glacier Bay. While many struggle with choosing between  Hubbard and Glacier Bay  as an Alaska itinerary, both are breathtaking in their own way.

I have cruised Hubbard Glacier four times and Glacier Bay National Park four times, and both offer fabulous itineraries that will leave you speechless.

When To Cruise To Hubbard Glacier?

Depending on when you travel, Hubbard Glacier can appear quite different. I’ve seen the glacier as different times of the year and Hubbard Glacier weather can play a huge factor in the experience.

In May, the snow-capped mountains will blend seamlessly with the glacier. On clear days, you’ll enjoy mesmerizing towering peaks.

Hubbard Glacier, Alaska in May

As the ship leaves the Gulf of Alaska into Yakutat Bay, the captain will slow its engines for a cautionary approach into the narrowing Disenchantment Bay.

Weather can also affect how much ice dots the waters of Disenchantment Bay. Remember to bring binoculars, as you can see harbor seals on the icebergs and sea lions on the rocks. In fact, you’ll probably hear them before you see them.

Since Hubbard is advancing at a slow but persistent rate, it consistently calves into the waters, leaving them heavily populated with blue-hued icebergs. If you want to witness glacier calving, Hubbard is the best glacier to visit.

As the warmer weather approaches, the glacier calves more. So, by July, you will see much more ice in the water. The amount of ice can affect how close a cruise ship can get to the terminal face.

Lots of ice in Disenchantment Bay

The captain’s experience will also factor into how close they are willing to go. In bad weather, ships may stop several miles before the glacier. If all conditions are right, you may get within 1/4 mile of its towering face.

Surging through the icy waters, guests are transported in a “twilight zone” as the ice multiplies not only in quantity but in size. Soon, the silted striped bergs rivaled the size of houses adorned seagulls, harbor seals, and bald eagles.

If you cruise towards the end of the Alaska season, expect colder temperatures and an increase chance of rain.

The Face Of Hubbard Glacier

Disenchantment Bay is wide and can accommodate large cruise ships. It’s less likely your Alaska itinerary will chance due to ice in the water. However ice and fog will affect how close you get to the colossal face.

So, how big is Hubbard Glacier? At its face, it measures an enormous 7 miles wide and 600 feet tall, of which 350 feet is visible above the water while 250 feet lie beneath.

Getting close to Hubbard Glacier

Keep in mind that much of the ice lies beneath the water line, and that will determine how close a ship can get to its façade. On the day I arrived, the conditions swung in our favor, and at a ¼-mile distance, I came face-to-face with the towering behemoth.

Standing on the deck, my cruise ship dwarfed in size next to Hubbard, and I was in awe of this spectacular natural wonder.

Unlike Glacier Bay itineraries, Hubbard is not inside a national park. Therefore, park rangers will not board the ship during the time spent at the glacier. Instead, a knowledgeable naturalist will accompany cruisers on their journey.

He/she provides oodles of appealing information about the surrounding tundra and the Alaskan wildlife that inhabits this area.

In the five hours I spent in the bay, the naturalist kept his eyes peeled to alert us to sightings of brown bears, eagles, mountain goats, seals, and humpback whales. Keep your cameras and  binoculars   handy, so you don’t miss out on that unexpected appearance.

An iceberg crowded with harbor seals

At the face of Hubbard Glacier, I noticed the ragged ice had various shades of blue and aqua. Although looking to the far left, it meets the much dirtier Valerie Glacier, mottled with silty stripes of volcanic ash.

On a clear day, you’ll see towering peaks behind the icefield, and some of these lie in Canada.

The Rise And Fall Of Hubbard Glacier

Over the last century, Hubbard has been advancing and retreating. Currently, it’s in a slow-advancing stage. In a world of increasing climate change where most icefields are retreating at an alarming rate, it’s comforting to see one defying the odds.

If this isn’t a reason to book your cruise to Hubbard Glacier now, I don’t know what is.

At 76 miles long, this giant glacier begins at Mount Logan in the Yukon Territory of Canada. Due to its vast catchment basin, it gathers a tremendous amount of snow during the winter.

This fallen snow either moves with the ice or later melts and adds to the glacier’s size. It’s astonishing to know it takes 400 years for the ice at the top to traverse to the terminus or the toe.

So, when viewing those gorgeous shades of blue ice at the face, know that it’s 400 years old. Interestingly enough, in 1986 and 2002, the ice flow advanced sufficiently to close off the entrance to Russell Fjord, on the righthand side of Hubbard.

Blue ice at Hubbard Glacier

The blockage of this fjord caused the water levels to rise rapidly and threatened to flood the Alaskan town of Yakutat.

The rising water in the now newly-developed lake caused a natural death to the surrounding flora, which could not survive underwater.

Eventually, the force of the water broke through, creating a new channel for drainage into Disenchantment Bay. Experts believe it’s a matter of time before Hubbard Glacier advances enough to dam Russell Fjord again.

During your glacier cruise, look to the far right where the land juts out. This is Gilbert Point and the area that will eventually close up again.

Glacier Calving

Since Hubbard is actively advancing, all that movement causes the ice to crack. Routinely, chunks of ice break away from the terminus and fall into the frigid waters below.

This action is known as “calving’. Calving is one of the most amazing natural wonders in the world, and it’s a treat to witness.

Glacier calving at Gilbert Point

First, I heard the earth-shattering thunder, and then I scoured the towering ice to watch for the calving action. At 7-miles long, it was often difficult to predict where the ice would break off.

It was a matter of luck if I had my camera positioned in the correct direction. Sometimes the pieces were scanty, but other times, the chunks paralleled the size of a six-story apartment building.

Some of the newly-calved icebergs would collide with the water and splinter outwards, creating significant waves. This is one reason ships keep their distance from the edge of Hubbard.

During my Alaska cruise with Celebrity, the captain performed a slow pirouette of the ship allowing everyone equal viewing time.

So, whether you choose to view up on deck (as I did) or from the privacy of a stateroom balcony, every location is ideal for gazing. Plus, each cruise ship spends hours at the foot of Hubbard, so there’s ample opportunity to take plenty of photos.

Hubbard Glacier & Wilderness Exploration

To elevate your experience at the icefield, consider booking the Hubbard Glacier Explorer tour. This excursion is only offered through your cruise line and sells out months in advance.

Operated by Allen Marine, the tours allows booked guests to board a large catamaran along their cruise ship. Then the vessel follows closer to the land on an approach to Hubbard.

By cruising closer to the shoreline, you’ll have an increased chance of wildlife viewing. Alongside giant icebergs, you’ll be face-to-face with harbor seals who are undeterred by your presence.

Hubbard Glacier Wilderness Explorer vessel

Sometimes, your tour operator will retrieve ice from the water to make cocktails onboard.

Smaller vessels can also get closer to the glacier’s surface, providing a front row seat to frequent calving. While most tidewater glaciers in Alaska are retreated due to global warming, Hubbard is advancing.

Once the excursion finishes, you’ll meet your cruise ship as it’s leaving Disenchantment Bay.

Alaskan Weather

On my first cruise to Hubbard, it rained the whole time we were glacier cruising and visibility was poor. I observed a few people in the steaming hot tubs outside on the wet deck, and it sparked an idea.

How often do you get to enjoy the bubbling waters of a spa while sitting next to a glacier? So, like the other few brave souls on that Hubbard Alaska cruise, we grabbed our bathing suits and Celebrity bathrobes to enjoy a hot tub with a spectacular view.

Call me adventurous or call me crazy, but life’s more enjoyable with a little spontaneity.

During the summer months (May through to September), expect the temperatures to be between 40- and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The average rainfall is 7 inches to 21 inches per month, with the wettest months towards the end of the Alaska cruise season.

Visiting Hubbard lacier on a wet day in July

Keep this in mind when packing for your Alaska adventure. While you might enjoy much warmer temperatures in port, it can be mighty cold next to Hubbard.

It’s hard to top my first cruise to Alaska. Maybe part of that comes from the newness of my surroundings and the fact that everything was a “first”. However, my 4th cruise on Cunard Queen Elizabeth got me closer to Hubbard with near-perfect weather conditions.

Perhaps part of it was that Celebrity Cruises made everything so fantastic. But even though I have traveled back to Alaska several more times, its immense panoramas still captivate me.

Other Visits To Hubbard Glacier

During my second Hubbard Glacier cruise with Princess Cruises, the temperatures were warmer, and the skies were void of rain. However, there were lots of low-lying clouds on the face of Hubbard.

All that fog obscured the views and made for a less-than-spectacular glacier viewing experience.

Visiting Hubbard Glacier on a sunny day

During my third Alaska cruise in May 2022, the skies were crystal clear, and the mountains were heavy with snow. The snow blended with the ice and blue hues of Hubbard Glacier.

Although I got COVID during my cruise, I was still able to enjoy Hubbard Glacier from my balcony, and I was extra thankful I had one.

Know that whenever you sail, you can’t predict the weather, control the visibility, or know how close to Hubbard Glacier your ship can get. So, if Alaska serves you lemons (or liquid sunshine), jump in the hot tub as I did!

If you can’t get enough of glacier viewing, book a one way cruise itinerary. You could see Hubbard Glacier along with Glacier Bay National Park. In Glacier Bay, the wildlife viewing continues as Johns Hopkins Glacier provides an important harbor seal breeding environment.

Happy travels ~ Karen

Does Princess do an excursion at Hubbard Glacier where passengers can get on a smaller boat and get closer to the glacier? I'm booked on an Alaska cruise to Hubbard but the excursion isn't listed. I'm hoping it will pop up closer to the sailing, as I'm sure Princess still has to arrange things with their local partners, but I would be really bummed if this excursion isn't offered. And if it is offered, has anyone done it before? What is the price like, and did you like the excursion?

We did one called Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer (actually in Endicot since Tracy was still frozen over) in 2017.  It was only done on some itineraries from Seattle that have later arrival into Juneau where the tour boat returns you directly to the ship.   It was $377.92 for 2.  ETA: we loved it.

There was one this past summer but be aware they pack about 150 people on the boat and it is shoulder to shoulder with few if any masks

Very exciting excursion. Up close and personal. You see the Princess ship depart and catch up with her later in the day in port. Highly recommend.

Thanks everyone. Our glacier day is just the glacier, we don't go off to Juneau or another port later in the day. I wonder if they don't offer it on those kind of days? Either way I'll keep an eye on our excursions page.

We did a canoe excursion that went up to Hubbard Glacier when the ship was docked in Juneau.  It also included a stop to taste beer at Alaska Brewing.  I believe it was a Discovery Channel excursion called Paddle & Pours.

We did the Hubbard Glacier excursion in May from the Grand Princess.  It was the highlight of our trip.

We sailed with Princess in June and did the Hubbard Glacier & Wilderness Exploration tour that off loaded from the ship --- absolutely wonderful.  We were very fortunate and saw lots of calving.  Lots of space to move around on the tour boat and we were able to get lots of good photographs.  I have attached a couple of my favorite pictures.  We are sailing once again with Princess in July and will be taking the same excursion.  Pricing is $299.95 per person.

If this one doesn’t work out there is another option that may work for you if you’re going to be in Alaska for a few days before or after your cruise. Between Anchorage and Seward there is a glacier named Exit Glacier where you can walk right up to the glacier itself if you’re so inclined. It does require a rental car to get to from the city and a little walk that gets a little longer each year as the glacier recedes.  It is accessed from a nice little park with info on the history of the glacier and signs marking where the leading edge of the glacier was over each decade of the last century or two as I recall. Best of all access is free and there used to be a park ranger on the hiking trail or one other overlooks leading up to the glacier.  The last time or two we visited you could walk the upper trail to the top of the glacier or the lower to its base.

Here is another shot.

I just booked the Hubbard Glacier and Wildlife Exploration excursion for $299.95 an adult for my June 2 Crown Princess cruise. This excursion did not become available until two weeks after the excursions for the other ports became available.

You must be talking about the tour to Mendenhall Glacier then. That's a whole other place, and it's not a tidewater glacier. Hubbard Glacier is more than 200 miles northwest of Juneau in Yakutat Bay / Disenchantment Bay.

This excursion doesn't show up for the April 29 Alaska cruise on the Sapphire. Maybe it's too early in the season for that, as a local vessel is used for this tour.

This is a great experience with two cautions.

The ship is very crowded and the weather can be anything from sunny and calm to very rough.  Rough weather will cancell the excursion.

To see a glacier close up suggest EXIT GLACIER.  It is about 10 miles north of Seward with a hike that is on a good trail.  Family friendly.

Also Kenai Fjords boat tour out of Seward is an all day tour leaving from Seward in the boat Basin.  A don't miss.  To do this spend a night in Seward before or after your cruise.

We have taken the Hubbard excursion about three times and have never had issues with crowding or rough weather -- maybe we just got lucky.  We have also had two experiences where we had one vendor cancellation and one cancellation due to fog so we know it can sometimes have its drawbacks --- but, it is a chance we are willing to take.

We have also been to Seward quite a few times and taken the Kenai Fjords boat tour as well as a trip to Exit Glacier.  Our cruise does not go to Seward but I am sure others will find your post helpful.

For those of you that took a ships glacier excursion, were any of that type of excursion available for the Alaska cruises that are round trip out of San Francisco?

Therese,  It depends on the ship's itineraries and port times.

I know that Hubbard Glacier is usually visited on Southbound itineraries from Anchorage/Whittier.

It is further North.

Not sure, from San Francisco, what itinerary or different back-to-back legs you might be booking.

But, there are several different ships and itineraries in Alaska now.

I have done the 27 Glacier tour from Whittier, on our own, not thru Princess, before boarding an Alaska cruise at Whittier.

There are also opportunities to do these smaller boat glacier tours in the fjords when visiting Tracy Arm Fjord or Endicott Arm.  There are a few itineraries that have an all-day port time at Juneau, and the tour of the Fjord can be done on your own from Juneau.

NOTE:  I just looked at the San F. itineraries.  If my search was right, it shows two round-trip from San Francisco.  And it looks like the only small boat glacier excursion possible might be on the itinerary that visits the Fjord, it lists Endicott Arm.

Your welcome.  I know this excursion is not everyone's cup of tea.  However, the excitement of being  close to the glacier, hearing the boom of the calving and watching the incredible ice falling from the glacier is so amazing.  Hope you have a wonderful experience.

I am on your sailing June 2!   I am debating this excursion, almost daily I check to see how many tickets are still available.    Last time I went to Alaska we went to Glacier Bay and I felt my cabin was fine.  I also did a glacier tour to Tracy Arm/ Glacier viewing from Juneau that I do not see listed on the Princess website but on the NCL site, that got up close with a Glacier.   (My last cruise was out of Sydney!  I miss my annual trip to OZ, spending Christmas in Australia. I am glad to see that things are opening up more there now and that I may one day have the option to go back!  )

Good to see that you are also going to be on the June 2 sailing! I booked the excursion because even though I have cruised past glaciers before (Amalia Glacier and Glacier Alley in Chile) I haven't been up close to a glacier. This is our big splurge excursion for this cruise and didn't want to take the chance that I might miss out, so booked as soon as it became available. I am really looking forward to it and the cruise.

Australia is open for business and tourists again so maybe you could plan to come for Christmas 2023! We'd love to have you back again!

Ya, I know! But, I live in China.  Right now it is 8 days quarantine, down from the 21 days I did in 2021 and the 14 days I did in 2020 but it makes short holidays difficult.  đŸ„Č Â Â I had great plans to fly to Sydney for a concert in 2020 just for the weekend to see some friends.  How times change.

Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay: Which is the better scenic cruising spot in Alaska?

Melinda Crow

Editor's Note

Glacier viewing, salmon fishing, whale watching, dog sledding — Alaska cruise bucket lists tend to be long.

Luckily, cruise lines devote time to cruising near some of Alaska's most scenic and famous rivers of ice, so passengers can have prime glacier viewing options. When it comes time to book your cruise, which of the top glacier cruising experiences should you pick? For most cruisers, it comes down to Hubbard Glacier versus Glacier Bay National Park .

Hubbard gets a nod for its sheer size, while the Glacier Bay option is prized for how many glaciers you can see in one day. For me, the best glacier cruise would include both Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay, but if forced to choose, it would be Glacier Bay. Before we dive into the reasons, let's cover the basics of what you can expect when it comes to glacier viewing in Alaska.

Tips to ensure you see a glacier on your cruise

Can you cruise to Alaska and not see glaciers? More importantly, would you still have fun? Sure. I did it recently and had a marvelous time.

My glacierless cruise was not a surprise. It was an early season, short cruise that only visited Ketchikan, Alaska, and Victoria, British Columbia. You should know, though, that almost any Alaska cruise can leave you without a glimpse of a glacier. Weather, ice in the water and onboard emergencies are the usual reasons ships must skip scheduled glacier visits.

If scenic cruising near a glacier is a priority for you, there are three things you can do to improve your chances.

First, book a midseason cruise because early and late cruises face more ice in the water and more challenging weather conditions. Second, book a cruise with more than one glacier cruising day to double your odds. Finally, add a glacier cruising excursion; these are often possible from the ports before or after the day your ship plans to do its scenic cruising near a glacier.

Tip: If your cruise offers a glacier viewing excursion on the day the ship is scheduled for scenic cruising near a glacier, take it. It indicates that the ship won't get as close as you might want.

Hubbard Glacier

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Details: It's the longest tidewater glacier in North America; the face is more than 400 feet high and almost 7 miles wide.

Cruise lines that visit Hubbard Glacier: Most cruise lines that visit Alaska include Hubbard Glacier on at least one itinerary — often on one-way sailings or longer round-trip cruises. The list includes small- and medium-ship cruise lines like Crystal and Silversea .

What makes Hubbard Glacier special: Hubbard Glacier's enormous face is its biggest draw. Its massive size means you can see it even on visits when the ship cannot get as close as you'd like. Ships typically get within a quarter- to a half-mile of the face of the glacier, but the amount of ice in the water can sometimes force ships to halt farther out in the fjord.

Hubbard is sometimes called "The Galloping Glacier" because it has been advancing into Disenchantment Bay for more than 100 years — sometimes in surges that cut off nearby Russell Fjord. It is currently considered stable in terms of overall size, but it's steadily moving forward into the bay.

That movement causes ice to break off and fall into the sea in a process known as calving, which is not related as much to temperature as it is to the physics of the glacier's thickness and the steepness of the land mass it crosses. Ice chunks the size of three-story buildings often fall into the water, creating a thunderous roar and waves that pound nearby shorelines.

The glacier is part of the 13.2 million-acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park encompasses the largest glacial system in the U.S., with 35% of the park covered by glaciers.

During the cruise into Yakutat Bay, which narrows into Disenchantment Bay, you may see humpback whales, orcas, bald eagles, seals, sea lions and even bears on shore. Some ships have naturalists on board to help with (and announce) wildlife sightings during the ship's visit to the bay.

Related: The 6 best Alaska cruise shore excursions — from heli-hiking to whale watching

Glacier Bay

hubbard glacier princess cruise

Details: It's part of a national park and preserve covering over 3 million acres and encompassing more than 1,000 glaciers — seven of which are tidewater glaciers you can see from the ship.

Cruise lines that visit Glacier Bay : Cunard , Holland America , Norwegian , Princess , Seabourn , Viking , American Cruise Lines , Lindblad, UnCruise and Alaskan Dream Cruises.

What makes Glacier Bay special: The obvious wow is that you can see seven glaciers in one day here. Also cool is that the bay is part of a national park, and rangers will board the ship to answer your questions. They'll have maps, charts and all the information you could want about the park's glaciers and wildlife. Yes, you can get your national park passport stamped.

The ship will visit the park for nine to 10 hours, traveling more than 120 miles. We found itineraries that started as early as 6 a.m. and one on Holland America that arrived at 8:30 a.m. (It stayed until 6:30 p.m.) Ships stop in front of one of the tidewater glaciers for about an hour, rotating 360 degrees to give everyone on board a view.

Only two large cruise ships are allowed per day; luckily, the park classifies smaller lines — including UnCruise, Lindblad and American Cruise Lines — as tour vessels rather than cruise ships, so the big-ship limits don't apply.

Throughout the day of cruising, you can expect to see harbor seals, Steller sea lions, sea otters and bald eagles. You may also see brown bears (coastal grizzlies), black bears, humpback whales, harbor porpoises, mountain goats, orcas and puffins.

Which is better: Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay?

For length of time spent scenic cruising : Glacier Bay wins this one. The limited number of ships allowed each day means it is an all-day event for the lucky few who cruise these waters. Cruises to Hubbard Glacier typically spend a few hours near the glacier.

For dramatic presentation: Hubbard Glacier is the drama queen of all Alaskan glaciers. Between its brilliant blue colors, thunderous calving and monumental size, Hubbard puts on quite a show. The glaciers in Glacier Bay are quieter, far less flashy and less likely to exhibit calving of large ice chunks.

For wildlife viewing : Both scenic glacier cruises put you in ideal spots to see Alaskan wildlife and sea life throughout the visit; however, Glacier Bay is the winner because ships stay in the bay longer. It's like having an extended wildlife viewing excursion — except you never have to leave the ship.

Better for children or those with short attention spans: Hubbard wins here because it's a shorter visit. A visit to Glacier Bay is a long, slow affair, often beginning early in the morning and requiring warm clothing and lots of patience. The one plus for kids at Glacier Bay is interaction with the park rangers on board the ship.

For choice of cruise lines : Hubbard for the win here also. I tracked down 13 different cruise lines offering Hubbard stops in their itineraries. Glacier Bay does earn bonus points, though, for having the greatest number of small-ship options. Imagine the thrill of cruising here onboard an UnCruise, Lindblad or American Cruise Lines vessel.

For cost of the cruise: Both glacier stops are likely to require a one-way itinerary, which can add to your airfare costs, but Glacier Bay edges out Hubbard on this one. This is primarily because we did find a handful of seven-night round-trip itineraries that included stops here. Also, for the best viewing at Hubbard, you may still need a shore excursion on a smaller boat, which will add to your total costs.

Most likely to succeed: This one is also a win for Glacier Bay. With seven glaciers, the odds are stacked in your favor. It would take severe weather, dense fog or a ship emergency to keep you from seeing at least one glacier with this park on your itinerary.

Other glaciers in Alaska to see by cruise ship

hubbard glacier princess cruise

While Hubbard and Glacier Bay are the two most famous glacier choices on Alaska cruises, don't forget the smaller options. Here's what to look for and what to expect.

If your itinerary says you'll be cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord, you are there to see the twin Sawyer glaciers. The narrow fjord is stunning in its beauty. Plus, you'll get closer to land here than in the big open bays, offering a better view of waterfalls and wildlife. Look for bears and mountain goats.

Endicott Arm is a fjord that branches off Tracy Arm and might be used as a backup for Tracy Arm if the weather or ice prevents your ship from reaching the Sawyer glaciers. Because Endicott Arm is a bit straighter than Tracy Arm, larger ships (such as Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas) will schedule visits here. The glacier you'll see at Endicott Arm is Dawes Glacier. Ships may offer boat excursions to see these glaciers close-up, both on the day of scenic cruising and in Juneau.

College Fjord is a more northerly option near Whittier, so you'll typically find it on itineraries that sail to or from Whittier or Seward. This is a bonus glacier viewing spot because most itineraries that include it also include either Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay. The real bonus, though, is that the fjord is home to five tidewater glaciers.

Disney Cruise Line often does its scenic cruising in the Stikine Icecap, the most southerly ice field in Alaska. The icy fjord is home to waterfalls, floating icebergs and wildlife such as whales, eagles, brown bears and mountain goats.

Bottom line

You can enjoy an Alaska cruise without seeing glaciers. However, if that's an important part of your dream Alaska experience, you should book a cruise with more than one opportunity to see glaciers because things can (and do) go wrong.

As for choosing Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay, our vote goes to Glacier Bay for ease of viewing, time spent in front of the glaciers and cost to visit — but you won't be disappointed with either option.

Hubbard Glacier Cruise Guide

Hubbard Glacier is by far one of Alaska’s most exciting natural treasures. On a Hubbard Glacier cruise, you’ll experience picture-perfect views of this glorious mount of ice from every angle on board one of our luxury cruise ships.

On an Alaska cruise to Hubbard Glacier, witness stunning icy landscapes as your ship makes its way through frigid waters, turning from Yakutat Bay into the narrow Disenchantment Bay to come face-to-face with the towering Hubbard Glacier. The strong currents and riptides that flow between Gilbert Point and the face of the glacier cause calving to occur on a daily basis, sending massive chunks of ice crashing into Disenchantment Bay.

Witness this awe-inspiring phenomenon through the misty, chilled air of the Gulf of Alaska. Our dedicated onboard naturalist narrates the experience and helps you spot the whales, harbor seals, and otters that hunt and play in the waters of Disenchantment Bay. It’s an adventure of a lifetime.

Hubbard glacier.

Dramatically massive at about 7 miles wide, 76 miles long and as tall as a 30-story building above the waterline, it’s the largest tidewater glacier in North America. While most of the world’s glaciers are retreating, Hubbard Glacier has continued to thicken over the years.

Glacier Calving

Hubbard Glacier is a calving glacier, meaning large chunks of ice break off from the side and fall into the water below, thus creating icebergs. It is a spectacular and powerful sight to see, with some of the pieces being as tall as a three-story building.

Alaskan Wildlife

Spotting wildlife is a thrilling possibility while at Hubbard Glacier. You might see whales breaching in the waters around the glacier, or view sea lions lounging on icebergs. Sea birds often circle the glacier, looking for fish.

Top things to do at hubbard glacier, embark on a wilderness exploration tour.

While you’ll experience incredible views of Hubbard Glacier from your cruise ship, you can get even closer to this natural wonder on a shallow-draft vessel. Navigate through an icy labyrinth of towering icebergs, and marvel at the glacier’s extraordinary calving displays and native wildlife.

Wake up Early

Enjoy both the journey to the glacier and your time near it by getting up early on your Hubbard Glacier cruising day. If you won’t be admiring the view from your own private veranda, you’ll get to choose a prime viewing spot on one of the decks or lounges by getting there early.

Listen to the Naturalist

While at Hubbard Glacier, spend some of your time indoors so you can listen to the onboard naturalist describe what you’re seeing. The narration will be broadcast over the speakers in common areas, and you can turn on a channel to hear it through your stateroom’s TV.

Get a Veranda Stateroom

To take full advantage of all the views and wildlife you can see from the ship during your day sailing alongside Hubbard Glacier (and the rest of Alaska), book one of the coveted veranda staterooms or suites so you’re always just a couple of steps away from incredible views.

History of Hubbard Glacier

Named after Gardiner Hubbard, the founder and president of the National Geographic Society, Hubbard Glacier is the longest tidewater glacier in the world. It’s located about 200 miles northwest of Alaska’s capital city of Juneau. Unlike most glaciers, which are receding, Hubbard Glacier is advancing into Disenchantment Bay, giving it the nickname of the galloping glacier. This constant movement (which is extremely slow and not noticeable to the human eye) is what contributes to the regular calving of Hubbard Glacier.

Before it calves, the ice can be more than 400 years old! Keep that in mind as you’re marveling at the face of the glacier and witnessing part of its journey.
