Halsey with Live String Ensemble

Two nights only! Jersey’s own Halsey returns for a very special engagement to benefit arts programs and arts education across New Jersey.

Never an artist to shy away from putting herself out there openly and loudly, Halsey uses her unmistakable voice and refreshingly honest “confessional approach” to her songwriting to connect with people worldwide. She’s a true force to be reckoned with, an artist unafraid to go deep and bare her soul in ways that make us all feel less alone. Fierce yet vulnerable, she may be “Bad at Love”, but she is “So Good” as an artist and performer. Her edgy ferocity commands the spotlight, and from the minute she walks out on stage, she has audiences mesmerized and singing along to every song.

Part of the North to Shore Festival.

With an eight-piece string ensemble in tow and new arrangements dripping with drama and vitality, Halsey unveiled what was, by many leagues, the most brilliant stage show of the New Jersey pop star’s young career Wednesday night in Newark.

In many respects, the artist born Ashley Frangipane has already reached the zenith of mainstream success: Three double-platinum albums, major headlining festival spots, billions upon billions of streams online — in recorded music history, there are only 100 diamond-certified singles (10 million copies sold); Halsey has two of them (“Without Me” and “Closer,” with The Chainsmokers).

Halsey Announces Summer 2023 Performances Benefiting LGBTQ Organizations

The "Without Me" singer announced that they are hitting the stage this summer alongside a string ensemble

Halsey is ready to present their music in a new way.

On Friday, the 28-year singer announced they are hitting the stage this summer alongside a string ensemble to raise funds for LGBTQ organizations.

"I'm playing a handful of intimate venues with a string ensemble this summer in partnership with Hard Rock Live to benefit LGBTQ+ organizations @OutrightIntl & @HRC," shared the performer on Twitter.

According to the announcement, the performances are scheduled for June 24, June 30, and July 2; with all concert proceeds and donations benefiting Hard Rock Heals, Outright International, and the Human Rights Campaign.

Each organization works to benefit the LGBTQ community in different ways.

The Hard Rock Cafe developed the Hard Rock Heals Foundation to provide grants and assistance to global health and wellness, disaster relief, and humanitarian causes.

The Human Rights Campaign is also a global organization that has a mission statement " to ensure that all LGBTQ+ people, and particularly those who are trans, people of color, and HIV+, are treated as full and equal citizens."

On its website, Outreach International states that they work to ensure "human rights for LGBTIQ people everywhere." After Halsey shared the announcement on Friday, they responded by replying to her Twitter announcement, writing: "Thank you, @halsey, for choosing to support our work. We can't wait for these performances!"

The "Without Me" singer has spoken openly about her views on identity and support of gender expression throughout her career.

After updating her pronouns to she/they on Twitter and Instagram in March 2021, she candidly spoke out about her perception of gender in an Instagram post shared shortly before the birth of her son Ender , 20 months, who she shares with partner Alev Aydin .

"I've been thinking lots about my body. It's strange to watch yourself change so quickly," wrote the "Graveyard" singer. "I thought pregnancy would give me very strong, binary feelings about 'womanhood', but truly it has leveled my perception of gender entirely ."

"My sensitivity to my body has made me hyper-aware of my humanness, and that's all," continued Halsey.

She added: "I cook a lot, sleep even more, and read lotssss of books. I miss my family. And you guys too! 🧚🏼‍♂️ bye for now."

Halsey a hit with strings attached: My songs 'the way they were supposed to be heard'

halsey string ensemble tour

It was an artistically invigorating and revealing night with pop superstar Halsey — and strings were definitely attached.

Halsey, born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane in Edison, performed her hits and more with an eight-piece string ensemble Wednesday, June 21, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The show was equal parts pop concert, cabaret revue, concerto and disarming confessional.

“I cry a lot since I've had my son,” said Halsey from the stage near the end of the performance. “Everyone's going to cry (when they become moms) — it's a lot like a Halsey concert.”

Halsey did tear up during the evening — more on that later.

Halsey, 28, made a dramatic entrance at a piano, stage right under a spotlight, after an eight-minute overture by the strings. The Gothic-tinged “The Tradition” brought a certain amount of gravitas to the proceedings right off the bat, and nicely framed Halsey's expressive and nuanced soprano voice. She can be quite a vocal powerhouse and that was readily apparent on the NJPAC stage. Halsey conveyed vulnerability and power on “The Tradition”, which was underscored by a sustained note enhanced by the swell of strings and boom of kettle drums. “Bad at Love” featured a playful lilt and “Colors” had haunting “blue” notes sung by Halsey.

“I can't help feeling this the way they were supposed to be heard, you know?” said Halsey of the songs. “Especially here of all places.”

In addition to the eight string players, who were partially obscured behind a stage barrier, there was a guitarist and percussionist who also played bass on several songs. There also seemed to be off-stage musical elements added to the sound. Halsey wore a tuxedo-style suit and tie. She lost the jacket about halfway through the show to reveal a sleeveless shirt.

When Halsey plays arenas, she's a runner and dancer on stage. In the smaller NJPAC set-up, the moves were there, but more efficient. She would look back over her shoulder to emphasize a line, or shrug her shoulders for effect.

Then, something happened about 45 minutes into the show. Halsey started talking to the receptive audience.

“Damn, listen, I had a whole plan. I was going to come out here and be really mysterious and cool but you guys got me (blanked) up,” said Halsey to cheers. “You should have seen me back there (offstage). It was like I was in a movie, I got my tuxedo on, sitting in front of a vanity fixing my collar — yes! 'I'm a very serious musician who does very serious things and performs in very serious buildings. I'm going to go out there and be serious.' I have to thank you because this is way better.”

She said there were too many in the audience who were familiar with the pre-fame Halsey to be serious.

“I feel like there's a lot of people in the room right now who are, like, you are not Halsey, You were in the Girl Scouts and you (wet) your pants when you were six so you think you're cool but I remember that, so whatever,” said Halsey to laughs.

A few songs later, Halsey, who graduated Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, movingly acknowledged a former teacher who was in attendance.

“I was really in need of some guidance and some support and some validation,” said an emotional Halsey. “This show in particular is so important to me because making sure young people have access to artistic outlets is so vital — it's lifesaving.”

The night, part of the North to Shore festival, benefited arts programs and education in the state.

halsey string ensemble tour

For two nights only at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, Halsey performed live with a string ensemble on stage for a special engagement benefiting arts programs and art education across the state. It is a part of the inaugural state-wide North To Shore Festival that featured hundreds of New Jersey artists throughout June. I am still speechless after seeing her perform live for the first time in her home state, the entire night was so surreal. Finally getting to hear so many of the songs that have changed my life in countless ways in that setting was an unforgettable experience. I was in awe for the entire performance, it was one of the greatest shows I have ever seen!

I have always admired Hasley for their incredible songwriting ability that is always deeply personal and honest while simultaneously crafting an intricate universe within the music and art. I have always recognized a piece of myself in her music that has inspired my own artistic journey in such an impactful way.

Her music has been so influential in my life ever since I first heard "Ghost" back in 2015. I have continued to grow with her and her music over the years and during that time so much of it has taken on a new meaning for me. During the show, Halsey issued a similar sentiment for their own connection to these songs toward the end of the night, "There is a lot of beginnings and endings in a metaphorical sense, as well. Some of these songs mean something so different to me now than when I wrote them, in a good way. That's the beauty of music as like this malleable, tangible, ever-evolving thing. It's like every time you listen to it back, you hear something new; a new note, or a new lyric, or something takes on a new shape, or a new meaning". This show felt like such a celebration of that collective journey for all of us in that room.

Getting to see Halsey live in concert for the first time in such a special setting was such an incredible experience. It was truly such a magical show, one that I will never ever forget. The addition of the string orchestra elevated these songs to new heights. It felt so theatrical and melodramatic in all of the best ways.

I was especially blown away by Halsey's vocal performance the entire show, I don't even have words for it. She is absolutely one of the best performers I have ever seen live. To be following their journey since the beginning and to see her continue to grow in her artistry over the years has been beautiful to witness. Their talents were fully showcased that night. I had chills the entire time by the power and confidence in her voice, it was incredibly moving.

This was my first time at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, and it was such a beautiful venue and I look forward to seeing another show there one day. I'm so thankful to have had this experience, my dad and I tried to get tickets multiple times when they went on sale a few months ago, but it was sold out so quickly every time. About three weeks before the show, I checked Ticketmaster again and there were randomly two seats that opened up in the eighth row! It was the perfect view, so perfect that even Halsey's entire family sat in our row too! I talked to her mom after the show, who was so nice! Her brother, Sevian and his girlfriend sat next to me and they were so nice to talk to, as well! I recognized him right away and had to tell him how much I loved the "clementine" music video he was in and how much that song means to me. It was so unexpected to meet them there, but such a cool moment and the cherry on top of what was already such a great night!

halsey string ensemble tour

The setlist spanned the entirety of Halsey's discography. Since I was at the second night of the show, I tried to keep the setlist from the night before a surprise and I'm so happy I did. Every single time a new song started playing I was just so shocked to be witnessing it! She played literally every single one of my favorite songs, I still can't believe I finally got to hear some of them live! "Forever ... is a long time", "clementine", "Young God", "Walls Could Talk", "Ashley", and "Bells In Santa Fe" were a few of the many moments that I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was really so blown away by the entire setlist though, it was so perfect from beginning to end. A lot of them were songs she hasn't performed in years, others were only ever played once the night before. The setlist did seem to follow a common theme, being some of the most autobiographical and personal songs of their discography. On Twitter a few days before, Halsey said, "I think you’re gonna love the set list. ... I made this one for *me*".

The show opened with Halsey coming out on the side of the stage to a piano and played "The Tradition", the opening track of their 2021 album If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power . It gives me chills just thinking about how her voice echoed through the theater when she sang the lines, "I hope what's left will last all summer long, and they said that boys were boys but they were wrong". It was such a powerful introduction to the show. Then they transitioned into "Bells of Santa Fe" with the string ensemble, which was so gorgeous and so different from the studio version. It was only the second time she performed both of those songs and I can't think of a better time than to debut them live than at these orchestra shows. So much of If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power just feels like it was meant to be performed in a setting like this with a full string ensemble, it was stunning.

Then she performed "Castle", which is the first song on Badlands and another long-time favorite. It is such a powerful and empowering song that I have always loved. I vividly remember the first time I heard that song and the rest of  Badlands on the day it was released, it was one of the most formative albums of my high school years and continues to be one of my all-time favorites to this day.

Badlands will always hold a special place in my heart for so many reasons and all of the songs from that album they performed that night were so emotional for me. One of my favorite moments of the night was hearing "Colors" for the first time. The composition of it was just so gorgeous and made me tear up hearing it, it has always meant so much to me. I truly feel like that song shaped an entire generation of people at a point in time and it will forever be a classic. I have similar feelings about "Young God", as well. That has always been one of my favorite Halsey songs for all of the same reasons "Colors" is too. I don't think this is a song she performs too often anymore, so it was one of the many surprises of the night. The instrumentation was stellar and was such a magical moment getting to hear it live.

halsey string ensemble tour

So many songs were so unexpected to hear live, especially those from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom ; like "Lie", "Walls Could Talk" and "100 Letters". One of my favorite Halsey songs ever is "Walls Could Talk" and I loved hearing it live with that arrangement. The line, "play me like a violin hitting these notes" was so iconic too with the strings! One of the only additions to the setlist I would have made from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is "Alone", although it was briefly played by the eight violinists during a medley before Halsey came on stage.

Of course, she also played the classic "Bad At Love" from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom , and I loved the arrangement of the song so much. It was so different than the studio version and from any other performance she has ever done of it before. I know I keep saying this over and over, but it is just so stunning. The Garden State reference was also perfect to hear in Jersey!

halsey string ensemble tour

She also shared a lot of personal stories throughout the show between the songs. Since the two Jersey shows were in support of arts programs and art education across the state, she talked about the impact her high school art teacher had on her life during those years. She said the night before her teacher was in the audience and told the crowd how she would spend every chance she could in her art room and really found solace in that class. As she was talking about her to the crowd the night before, she started sobbing on stage while telling the story because all of the memories came flooding back to her all at once. It was such an emotional moment; you could hear a pin drop as she was telling the story. Even as she was retelling it, you could hear how impacted she was by that moment the night before. Sharing those stories and being so unfiltered about hardships is always something I admired Hasley for. My high school art class meant a lot to me at the time too, it was always my favorite class and a period I looked forward every school day. I even ate lunch in the art room every day of Junior year, which Halsey shared she did as well. Art, in many different forms, has impacted my life in countless ways. I wouldn't be the person I am today without it and more importantly, without the access I had to art education throughout my life. It is so important to continue to fight for the access to arts programs and art education in schools, it is great that this show was in support of it because it is such an important cause.

Although the setlist was spread out between all of Halsey's albums throughout her career, a large portion of the setlist was made up of their third album, Manic . I really can never say which Halsey album I definitively love the most, because every single one means so much to me for different reasons. However,  Manic is perhaps the album that I connect with the most on a personal level and have been so inspired by for the past three years. I love that she performed so many songs from Manic that night, especially since it never really had the full moment it deserved because of the pandemic. "Killing Boys" live felt so cinematic with the added orchestral elements. "I Hate Everybody", "You Should Be Sad", and "Graveyard", are also great songs from the album that were able to be completely transformed in these new arrangements. The studio version of "You Should Be Sad" is very country inspired and so different from any other songs Halsey has ever made before or since, so getting to hear it in this new way was so cool.

halsey string ensemble tour

There were so many really moving and emotional moments throughout the night. Everyone in that room has been affected by this music in different ways and although we come from all walks of life, we can all come together and celebrate our shared connection to this music. Moments like that during concerts where you can just feel the energy and excitement radiating off the crowd are just so beautiful. I felt this so many times throughout the night, like during "Colors", but also during songs like "clementine", "Forever ... (Is A Long Time), and "Ashley" too. Those are some of my favorite songs ever and I have so much to say about all three of them. Looking back at it now, hearing these songs were some of the biggest highlights of the night. "clementine" has always meant so much to me, it is one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion. She played it at the piano, as she did with the first song of the night, which made it feel even more intimate. Everyone singing along to the lines, "I don't need anyone, I don't need anyone, I just need everyone and then some" was a moment I always dreamt of hearing live one day ever since I heard that song.

The heightened instrumentation of "Forever ... (Is A Long Time)" was another one of the highlights of the night. The way that song was brought to life and elevated was like no other. The build-up to the closing lines, "I could never hold a perfect thing and not demolish it, what am I thinking? What does this mean? How could somebody ever love me?" was insane to hear with that composition!

"Ashley" is one of Halsey's most personal and autobiographical songs she has ever written. It is so introspective in the way that it unravels who she is as Halsey, the performer and the persona, and who she is as Ashley, the person she is behind it all. This song explores all of the different facets of her in such a unique way. "Took my heart and sold it out to a vision that I wrote myself, and I don't wanna be somebody in America just fighting the hysteria", is one of the standout lines that truly gave me chills to hear live.

halsey string ensemble tour

Toward the end of the show, Halsey said that these string arrangements "peeled back layers" of their songs in ways she didn't even know possible. That metaphor truly applies to every single song on the setlist and beautifully captures the pure magic of this show.

Another song that was completely transformed in this setting is "Gasoline", it was such a stunning rendition of the original. It really sounded like a completely different song, her entire demeanor was so different from the studio version. It was so theatrical and chilling at the same time, especially the first verses, "Do you tear yourself apart to entertain like me? Do the people whisper 'bout you on the train like me saying that you shouldn't waste your pretty face like me?" The line "do you call yourself a fucking hurricane like me" is of course the best and the entire crowd screaming that was everything.

halsey string ensemble tour

Before she played the last song, Halsey opened up about being an artist that shares so much of their life with the world through their work, while also having to deal with the personal repercussions of it. I wanted to share an excerpt of it, because it really does put so much of her work into a new perspective, and it is so interesting to hear her mindset around being an artist and a public figure.

"I have been sort of required to fail in front of the whole world, over and over again for the past ten years. In a way that actually feels really reminiscent of this like, hometown, home state kind of thing, where you graduate high school and go to college and you just really don't want the people you grew up with to see you make a fool of yourself ... one of the things about my job is that I have to tell people exactly who I am and exactly what I think and exactly what's going on in my life with such finality. I have to be absolutely positive and if something changes, or something goes a different way, everybody turns around ... I'm so sorry, I was wrong, ya know? And of those failures, perceived failures, there have been a series of many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many breakups. I'm a friendly person ... but I am also a deeply sensitive person, who believes people are good and believes in love and believes people are who they say they are when I meet them, every single time. Because of that I have written a couple of songs where I've been like, 'this person is the love of my life' and then the next album begs to differ and introduces you to the new guest starring character of that season. This last time around, I had this moment where I was just like, I'm not doing it, I'm not writing songs about people, nice songs about people anyway. Because every time I do, they make me look like an idiot. That was my immature first reaction, I was embarrassed ... But as we were putting this set together, I was listening to some of these songs and that embarrassment turned into something else. It turned into gratitude and forgiveness and peace and reconciliation in a way. Unfortunately for whoever the next person I date, I will continue to be writing songs about people."

The message of that reminded me of Lorde's song " Writer In The Dark " and a quote I read from her once talking about it ; "It’s not a historical document. It’s not a police record. It’s not journalism. I didn’t go to journalism school. I’m a writer. It’s about what I felt and sometimes you can feel an element of guilt or ‘Oh God, I shouldn’t have immortalised that person’, but the song is my way of saying ‘It’s what I’ve always been. It’s what I was when you met me. It’s what I will continue to be after you leave. That’s exactly what was going to happen when you kissed a writer in the dark."

halsey string ensemble tour

That was the introduction to the final song of the set before the encore, called "Ya'aburnee", a song that was written as a love letter to her partner at the time and her newborn son. The Arabic title roughly translates to "you bury me" and was the final track off of If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power . This was only the second time she ever performed it live, the first being the night before and said "...this one is one of my favorites". It is such a gorgeous song, the string instrumentation was stunning, especially during the chorus. It is truly one of the best love songs she has ever written, it is sad hearing her change some of the lyrics to past tense now, but the love and beauty of that time in their life is forever captured in this song. In the middle, she said she sound checked the song with her son earlier that day too, which was such a sweet moment. I truly hope she never does stop writing songs like this, that innate ability to capture those complicated, complex feelings and fleeting moments and create a piece of art out of them, has always made Halsey as an artist so special. "Ya'aburnee" was one of the many emotional moments of the night and such a gorgeous ending to the show.

halsey string ensemble tour

The second song of the encore was "Without Me". It is a Halsey classic for good reason, it is so well-written and truly timeless. Before the song she said "Without Me" is one she doesn't regret writing, which was so funny. As she said in "Die 4 Me" "I sold forty million copies of our breakup note" so she definitely shouldn't have any regrets there!

The final song of the night was "Hurricane", one of the songs that started it all for Halsey. Like I said with "Colors" before, "Hurricane" truly shaped a generation of people - a lyric like "Don't belong to no city, don't belong to no man" is the definition of iconic and truly changed culture forever. Hearing that truly took me back to being sixteen years old again and it was the perfect way to finish such an amazing performance.

halsey string ensemble tour

This was one of the most incredible shows I have ever been to and a night I will never forget. For my first time seeing Hasley, I truly couldn't ask for a better experience. Being a huge fan of her from the very beginning, it has been so beautiful to see them grow in their artistry year after year. I have my fingers crossed that she turns the audio of these special string ensemble shows into a live album one day so everyone has the chance to experience these gorgeous renditions over and over again. All of it was perfect and a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience that I can't believe I got to be there for.

Halsey Has Announced Three New String Ensemble Shows For This Summer Benefitting LGBTQ+ Organizations

Lexi Lane

Halsey has announced a new string of string orchestra concerts that will benefit two LGBTQ+ support organizations, Hard Rock Heals and Outright International & Human Rights Campaign.

After already putting up tickets for two similar gigs in New Jersey this summer, they have now partenered with Hard Rock for performances on June 24 in Hollywood, Florida, June 30 in Gary, Indiana, and July 2 in Wheatland, California.

“Outright International works with partners around the globe to strengthen the capacity of the LGBTIQ human rights movement, document and amplify human rights violations, and advocate for inclusion and equality,” the organization’s website reads.

“The foundation’s motto, Love.Amplifed., seeks to inspire us all to turn up the volume and deliver the message that lives can be improved by the healing power of music,” Hard Rock Heals’ says . “The Hard Rock Heals Foundation provides grants and assistance to health and wellness, disaster relief, humanitarian causes and more around the world.”

Tickets for all three shows are currently on sale. More information can be found here .

As for Halsey, she has continued a busy year, with a lead role in Americana that premiered at SXSW and a cast announcement for Ti West’s upcoming film, Maxxxine — which is currently filming now. Given that their last album was back in 2021, there is also the possibility for new music this year.

Halsey

Halsey is teaming up with Hard Rock live to perform reimagined versions of their songs for a good cause.

“i’m playing a handful of intimate venues with a string ensemble this summer,” she tweeted on Friday (April 14), adding that donations and proceeds for the show will benefit two LGBTQIA+ focused organizations. Outright International advocates for human rights and equality for LGBTQIA+ people, and invests in the community as well as allies around the world to produce cultural, social and legal change. Human Rights Campaign aims to ensure all LGBTQ+ people — and particularly those who are trans, people of color or HIV positive — are treated as equal citizens around the world. In addition, the events will also benefit Hard Rock Heals , which provides assistance to health and wellness, disaster relief, humanitarian causes and more around the world.

Halsey’s exciting announcement comes amid a treacherous time in the music industry, where a few artists have been sharing transphobic responses to trans activist  Dylan Mulvaney teaming up with Anheuser-Busch  to promote the brand’s Easy Carry Contest, including Kid Rock  and Travis Tritt.

Additionally, conservative politicians have been targeting trans people, drag queens and queer culture in recent weeks, leading to a surge in anti-LGBTQ bills surging through Republican-led legislatures,  particularly in Tennessee .

by Bonnie Arant Ertelt

The year 1974 brought a raft of cultural milestones to Nashville: Ike and Tina Turner performed at Municipal Auditorium in February, and Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton broke up their musical partnership the same month. President Richard Nixon played piano during the dedication ceremony of the new Grand Ole Opry House in March, only weeks after the Watergate Seven were indicted. Former Beatle Paul McCartney with his wife, Linda, and their kids spent the summer visiting Music City while living in a local songwriter’s home. And Robert Altman filmed on location in and around town for his movie Nashville , which would open to great acclaim the next year.

That fall, Blair Academy, Nashville’s center for classical chamber music, made a new hire. Kathryn Plummer , a 26-year-old violist originally from Lexington, Kentucky, joined the Blair String Quartet . A student of David Dawson at Indiana University’s Jacob’s School of Music and Walter Trampler at the Juilliard School, she took a pay cut to come to Blair from her full-time tenured position with the Cincinnati Symphony as assistant principal violist.

She recalls that one day during an orchestra rehearsal, a white slip of paper with her name on it was handed from person to person, through the violin section to the viola section. “That’s how old I am,” she laughs. “A paper note, an ancient form of communication. I opened it, and it said, ‘Call Chris Teal.’”

Christian Teal , professor emeritus of violin, Blair’s first holder of the Joseph Joachim Chair in Violin and first violin in the Blair String Quartet from 1972 to 2014, had played with Plummer at Indiana. He called Dawson, her former teacher, to track her down and invite her to audition.

“Chris told me about all the hopes and dreams in the future of Blair Academy [the name of the Blair School of Music before the merger of Vanderbilt and Peabody in 1979 and now the name of Blair’s precollege program]. I sent in a tape, and they invited me to audition live,” Plummer said. “As I flew back to Cincinnati, I kept saying to myself, ‘I’ve got to get this job. I want it more than anything I’ve ever wanted.’”

That summer, after landing the viola position with the BSQ, and before Plummer had moved to Nashville, she met William Fitzpatrick at the Aspen Music Festival. Fitzpatrick had studied at Blair as a precollege student.

“He said, ‘I’m going to be second violin in the Blair String Quartet,’ and we were just amazed that we met by accident,” Plummer said. “We ended up getting apartments in the same house on Belmont Boulevard. He only stayed one year at Blair—not 50—but we’ve stayed close friends.”

“I remember her kindness in allowing me to stay in the apartment in the back of her house during the year I spent in Nashville while a member of the Blair Quartet,” said Fitzpatrick, who retired in 2022 as the Henri Temianka Professor of Music and director of string studies at Chapman University’s Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music in Orange, California. “It’s rare to meet and work with a musician of such a high caliber who is so giving and willing to share. This is what I remember most of all about Kathy.”

Playing with the Blair String Quartet from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s was exciting for Plummer. In 1978, the quartet debuted at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

“Playing in New York at Weill and being reviewed by The New York Times was such a big moment,” Plummer said. “We also recorded a fair amount during those days. I had done session playing in Nashville , but to record an actual string quartet album—and we did several of them! We also played at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and toured throughout the Southeast. Chris spearheaded so much of that, and it was such fun traveling and working together. Those were exciting years for me.”

“Kathryn was one of the major reasons I was drawn to apply for the Blair String Quartet position at Blair,” said Cornelia Heard , Valere Blair Potter Professor of Violin. “I looked up to her when she was principal viola in the Aspen Chamber Symphony, and I was thrilled to get the opportunity to play with her. We quickly formed a friendship that has grown steadily over the years. Her beautiful tone, excellent rhythm and deep love, understanding and respect for music were foundational in the quartet and have always been an inspiration.”

After the merger with Vanderbilt ended the music department at Peabody in 1979, and the university pledged a new building for the Blair School of Music on Blakemore Avenue, the expansion from a precollege academy to include an undergraduate curriculum and major in music meant opportunities for teaching and performing also increased.

“At Blair, there was the excitement and enthusiasm of starting something new,” Plummer said. “We all had hopes and aspirations that we wanted for the school and for the groups that taught there. We had great dreams, and it was fun to build something and see it start to develop.

“That camaraderie is still [at Blair]. We’re much bigger, but the new faculty I have met all have that vision that we had when we were young: to make the school better. There are a lot of great schools of music, but I think Blair has retained its special collaborative spirit. I hope that that will always remain when I’m gone.”

Learning to teach

While it may have been chamber music that drew Plummer to Blair, she was excited about the chance to teach, something she had never done before. The phrasing, shading and timing used in playing chamber music is applicable to how students learn one-on-one with private teachers. Teaching chamber music allows students to learn how to read music emotionally as well as technically within a small group to gain common insight about how to play as an ensemble.

“I learned how to teach on the spot, and Chris [Teal] was a great mentor. I learned so much from him and David Vanderkooi [original cellist with the Blair String Quartet and Blair faculty member, 1967–84]; they took me under their wing.”

Plummer also credits her elementary school music teacher, Joseph Pival, with her teaching philosophy. As a fourth-grade student, being able to play the flutophone by ear got her into trouble when it came time to pass the sightreading examination and gain entry into an elementary music ensemble. She hadn’t bothered to learn it.

“Technically, I wasn’t supposed to be allowed to pick a stringed instrument or a band instrument,” Plummer said. “But—bless his heart—Mr. Pival called my parents and said, ‘I’m going to make an exception, because I see that she has talent, so I’m going to pass her.’

“I think that decision impacts the way I teach,” she said. “I look at every student as a unique, wonderful individual with their own strengths and maybe some challenges. I try to customize all my teaching to that particular person at that particular time. I think that’s what Mr. Pival was doing with me.”

Christopher Lowry, BMus’11, is one of Plummer’s many successful students. Lowry recently won the American Viola Society’s 2024 biennial Maurice Gardner Competition for Composers with his work, Zenith (for Jackson) for viola and electronics. Lowry holds a doctorate in musical arts in viola performance from Louisiana State University and is principal violist for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.

“I look at every student as a unique, wonderful individual with their own strengths and maybe some challenges. I try to customize all my teaching to that particular person at that particular time.” —Kathryn Plummer

“Kathryn was an amazing mentor and always a fierce advocate for me and all her students,” Lowry said. “She maintained a healthy balance between the technical and musical in her teaching, and she was always incredibly nurturing and patient in her approach, though unwavering in her high standards!”

Her former colleagues, Pam Schneller, emerita senior lecturer in choral music and former associate dean, and Roland Schneller, emeritus adjunct senior artist teacher of piano, agree about her teaching excellence. “Roland and I were privileged to be Kathryn’s colleagues for more than 30 years,” Pam Schneller said. “She’s an exceptional teacher at every level. Her high standards, dedication to the science of healthy technique and steadfast belief in her students inspired them to reach unimagined heights. Her students play in major orchestras all over the world.

“What I remember most, however, is her kindness and collegial attitude with everyone she meets,” she added—a point that Lowry also emphasizes.

“One of my favorite aspects of studying with her is that she always made lessons a safe space for everyone,” he said. “No matter how unprepared you might be for your lesson, she would never make you feel less than anyone else and was always there to help you through whatever you were going through—musically or otherwise. She has continued to be a great colleague and friend.”

Once more on the Turner stage

On May 4, at 3 p.m., many former students, colleagues and family members will gather for a retirement concert in Plummer’s honor on the stage at Turner Hall. Plummer has handpicked the music and is playing on every piece, including Arboretum , a work for four violas, written by Lowry. He will play it with Plummer, Molly Sharp, BMus’90 and principal viola with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and Alison Wang, Class of 2024 major in viola performance and medicine, health and society. The piece is a tribute to Plummer and uses the metaphor of a tree, like those on campus in Vanderbilt’s arboretum, to symbolize her impact at Blair, as one who has taught for five decades, withstood challenges and propagated a legacy of successful students.

“Chris [Lowry] will be the storyteller playing the first part, I’m the professor playing the second part. Molly Sharp, who was a Founder’s Medalist, by the way, is playing third, and fourth will be Alison Wang, who is going to Juilliard for her master’s,” Plummer said with pride. “I’m so touched.”

“That camaraderie is still [at Blair]. We’re much bigger, but the new faculty I have met all have that vision that we had when we were young, to make the school better. There are a lot of great schools of music, but I think Blair has retained its special collaborative spirit. I hope that that will always remain when I’m gone.” —Kathryn Plummer

Plummer’s half-century journey at Blair began and will end with chamber music, but it’s the students she says she will miss most. “I don’t think students realize how much we learn from them,” she said. “As players, I see where they’ve come from and what they’ve learned from their precollege teachers, and I’m like, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen that before.’ It’s an amazing accumulation of knowledge.”

Plummer’s retirement plans include writing a memoir for her family and spending time with her two children and four grandchildren. But she will never stop playing the viola.

“When you play music, you make new discoveries every day about the music, culture and yourself. You know how to better play the instrument, how to improve, and that’s what keeps me going. I’ll keep playing and maybe do some teaching on the side. I am still learning. I am still a student, even at 76.”
