What an amazing tour! Myself and a group of friends went on the Dingos 3 day tour last week and they were so accommodating when it came to putting all 17 of us in the same tour. Our tour guide Jeff was an absolute legend who constantly had a smile on his face. His knowledge of the island is amazing and it was great to hear all the facts. Definitely recommend this tour.

- 7 Best Fraser Island Day Trips From Hervey Bay
Need to find the best Fraser Island day trips from Hervey Bay, but unsure which one is the right one for you? In this guide, I’m sharing the best tours to K’gari so you can choose which one will suit your budget, time and preference.
Expect to read about the top day tours as well as half-day trips, hidden gems and much more to explore when visiting the world’s largest sand island. This guide is only for day tours from Hervey Bay, not from Rainbow Beach or Sunshine Coast unfortunately.
Table of Contents
Why do a tour to Fraser Island?
If you’re not keen on spending multiple days on the island, you can indeed to Fraser Island as a day trip. While you could easily spend a week, if longer on the island, it is possible to see the main sights in one day. Although you won’t get a lot of time at each sight, you’ll still be able to see the amazing crystal clear freshwater lakes and most popular one: Lake Mckenzie, Champagne Pools, Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck and much more!
One of the best reasons for doing a tour to Fraser Island is you don’t have to worry about damaging your car or worse off, a hire car.
If you’re not an experienced 4wd driving on sand, you may find it quite tricky and you could send up rolling the car or getting bogged many times. Yes you don’t need to do a tour to see Fraser Island as long as you come prepared with paper maps (Google Maps often mixes up roads), check the tides and properly plan your trip.
We were always more of the do our own adventures kind of people, but since we recently visited Fraser Island on the K’gari Explorer Tour, I’m so glad we didn’t drive ourselves because I think it would have been a bit stressful. You can read all about the 3 day, 2 night tour in my K’gari Explorer Tour Review where I break down absolutely everything you need to know about this tour.
Here are the best Fraser island day tours from Harvey Bay.
1. Book the ultimate day trip from Hervey Bay
If you’re looking to see all of the famous places in K’gari, then you must book this day trip from Hervey Bay with Kāgari Explorer Tour. We did the 3 day trip, and you’ll see almost the exact same attractions on the day trip except for Lake Wabby and you’ll miss out on a stay at the beautiful Kingfisher Bay Resort.
As the most comprehensive tour in (Fraser Island) K’gari, you’ll gain local knowledge from the excellent tour guides and see the best areas: Lake Mckenzie, Maheno Shipwreck, the jaw-dropping ancient rainforest of Central Station, The Pinnacles, Champagne Pools and of course float down the insta worthy Eli Creek.
I highly recommend booking this air conditioned 4WD tour if it’s the only one you have time to do. You won’t regret it! If you want to read our review, check out my 2 night, 3 day K’gari Explore Tour Review before you book.
2. Book a Aussie BBQ cruise to Fraser Island
This five hour half day tour departing from Hervey Bay takes you to the stunning calm waters of the remote Pelican Banks on K’gari (Fraser Island) for a swim, kayak, fish and wildlife spotting adventure. You’ll be given morning tea before tucking into a gourmet BBQ lunch including fresh seafood.
3. Explore the remote western side of Fraser Island

If you’re looking for a chilled our Fraser Island tour, join this four hour eco-sailing adventure to the calm waters of the Great Sandy Strait. Here youāll visit the heart of the dolphin playground while enjoying the pristine waters of Pelican Bank.
You may even spot from humpback whales if you’re visiting between June – November too. This is a fantastic relaxing half-day trip for anyone looking for things to do in Hervey Bay.
5. Book a beautiful sunset sailing tour around Hervey Bay and Fraser Island
If you’re looking for things to do in Hervey Bay at night, why not go on a Champagne Sunset Sailing Tour ? Fraser Island Itinerary
Now is the time to discover exactly what to do in Fraser Island (K’Gari). Here is the itinerary
Day 1: Lake MacKenzie, Central Station, Lake Wabby and 75-mile beach
Today we will start exploring the middle part of the island, which is closer to the ferry terminal.
Stop 1: Going for a swim at Lake Mackenzie
Your first stop will be Lake McKenzie . It is a freshwater lake situated near Eurong. Itās very famous for being one of the clearest lakes in the world and for its super white sand.
You can get there by car. There is a sand road going from the 75mile beach to Lake MacKenzie.
Whether you are driving yourself or are on a bus tour, please note that this road is quite bumpy. Make sure to put your seat belt on and be careful!
From the carpark, there is a walking path that will lead you to Lake McKenzie.
Once you step on the sand, you will discover how thin, soft and white it actually is. The colours are incredible there!
The lake itself features several shades of blue. On the edges, the water is crystal clear, completely see-through. As you get closer to centre it becomes this beautiful turquoise and then deep blue towards the middle.
Itās pretty incredible!
Lake McKenzie is a great place to go for a swim. The water is warm and is known for its health benefits! It gives you very soft skin and hair!
The beach itself is also beautiful. The sand is so white and soft! The perfect spot to lie down and work on your tan.
Stop 2: Visiting Central Station in the rainforest
From Lake McKenzie, drive to Central Station campground. This will take about 30 minutes.
Located in the heart of the rainforest, Central Station is an old historical site on Fraser Island.
For a lot of time, logging was a pretty big deal on the island. A lot of people were working there and cutting trees. Central Station was the main logging camp. Fraser Island is home to a lot of timber trees that were particularly good to make ships.
Eventually, logging on Fraser island was finally prohibited and a reforestation scheme started.
Fraser Island is the only place in the world where plants and trees grow in the sand. Most of the species are native of the island so preserving it is very important
However, because of its historical background, Central Station is now a good place to visit for travellers!
You can go on the Central Station walk. Itās a great way to discover the rainforest and its unique features.
You will be walking along a beautiful creek with crystal clear water and loads of plants around.
Up until the early 1900s, people were allowed to drive through the creek but when Fraser island became world heritage, they decided to build the boardwalk so now we can all enjoy this beautiful place without spoiling it!
You will also discover the famous strangling trees on Fraser Island.
What is a strangling tree and how does it work, do I hear you say? Well, here are some explanations!
For that to happen, you will need one big tree and a second small one. The smaller one will grow branches all around the first one up and dig roots into the ground.
Over the years, the branches will completely strangle the tree and kill it to be able to get all the nutrients from the ground.
Stop 3: Visiting the dunes and Lake Wabby
Once you’re done, it’s time to head back to the car and drive to Lake Wabby. This will take about 1 hour.
Lake Wabby is a freshwater lake located on the eastern side of Fraser Island, near the 75-mile beach.
Itās the deepest dune lake on Fraser Island.
Unlike Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby features a deep green colour and is surrounded by sand dunes on one side, trees on the other. Itās a great place to explore as it doesnāt look like anything else on the island.
The dunes are pretty tall and itās good fun to walk up and down. Itās not a hard walk but it takes about 45 minutes to get to Lake Wabby. Some of the dunes can be a bit steep.
Itās better not to wear shoes and they will be full of sand by the end of it. Thongs ( flip flops ) are not a good option either as they make it way harder to walk.
Once you finally get to the lake, you can go for a refreshing dip!
This is not an acidic lake which means that you can also see fish inside.
The great thing about Lake Wabby is that itās not as popular as other places on the island which means it doesnāt get as busy.
Day tours donāt go to lake Wabby so you will only see people that opted for a multi-day tour or are self-driving.
Stop 4: Driving on the 75-mile beach during the golden hour
Once you’re done with Lake Wabby, it should be late afternoon which means you can enjoy a drive on the stunning 75-mile beach during the golden hour!
The 75-mile beach is the main beach on Fraser Island. It lies on the eastern side of the island and as the name suggests, itās 75 miles long.
This is an important landmark on Fraser Island.
Firstly, thatās where most Fraser island attractions are located.
Secondly, itās the main highway on Fraser! Yes, youāve heard me right! On Fraser Island, the beach is the highway.
This means you need to adopt the same rules than on any other road. Drive on the left, no speedingā¦
Before you hit the road, make sure to check the tides. You can only drive on the 75-mile beach when the tide is low. If not, you may be stuck! Something to definitely consider and pay attention to.
If you are travelling around Fraser Island with a tour guide, you have nothing to worry about. S/he will know exactly when to go.
Stop 5: Watching the sunset on Fraser Island (bonus)
If you are not a morning person, then watching the sunset will be a better option for you. Unfortunately, there isnāt much to see on the eastern side of the island as the sun sets in the west but you can see it from the other side.
If you are staying at Kingfisher Bay resort , then you are at the perfect place!
Alternatively, you can opt for a sunset cruise from Hervey Bay when you come back. See prices here.
Day 2: Maven Shipwreck, Pinnacles, Champagne Pools, Indian Head and Eli Creek
Today we will head further north on the island.
Stop 1: Watching the sunrise at Eurong Beach
If you are up for an early start, head to the beach for the sunrise. The 75-mile beach is located on the eastern side of Fraser Island, making it the perfect spot to watch the sunrise!
Itās so pretty and colourful! Definitely, an amazing way to start the day.
If you are staying at Eurong Beach Resort , you only have to walk a few minutes to the beach and can make it back on time for brekkie!
Stop 2: Going on a scenic flight
Fraser Island is one of the only places in the world where you can take off and land on the beach!
If you are looking for a unique experience, taking a scenic flight on Fraser Island is a must-do!
Air Fraser Island is the company operating these flights. Prices start at $80.
You can find the planes on the beach. During this 15 minutes flight, you will see all the main Fraser Island attractions from the sky! Itās so pretty!
If you booked the 2-day Fraser Island Explorer tour , the driver will bring you there on the first day. If you want to, you can choose to go on the flight (itās not included in the tour though).
Even if you donāt take the flight, itās a pretty cool thing to see these planes taking off and landing on the beach!
Stop 3: Discovering the Maheno Shipwreck
The S.S. Maheno is one of the most famous Fraser island tourist attractions.
Little fun fact about the ship, Maheno means āislandā in Maori. It was an important ocean liner and was even used during WWI.
In 1935, it was caught in a cyclone and was driven ashore, on Fraser Island.
Itās ideally located on the 75-mile beach, making it a great stop for people visiting Fraser island.
You can pull over on the side of the beach and go see the wreck. Please note, you shouldnāt be going too close to it. Itās recommended to stay at least 3 meters away from it as it can be dangerous.
There are loads of photo opportunities with the Maheno shipwreck. Itās very pretty and impressive.
Stop 4: Admiring the beautiful Pinnacles
Situated only a few minutes away from the Maheno shipwreck, the Pinnacles are one of the most unique geological formations in Australia .
The sandy cliffs are known for their rainbow of colours!
If youāve visited Rainbow Beach before, you will find it a bit similar except that these are like a cliff instead of a beach.
The coloured sand layers are a result of thousands of years of wind, waves and rain hitting the cliff.
Itās a very pretty sight and is very important in the aboriginal culture. Butchulla people have loads of stories and legends about the Pinnacles on Fraser Island.
You can stop on the side of the beach and walk to the Pinnacles. There is a small path. Make sure to keep an eye on the plants as there can be snakes and lizards there.
Fraser Island is home to some of the most poisonous snakes in the world so thatās something to be aware of.
If you see one, donāt panic and just make your way. No matter what, do not touch it!
Stop 5: Swimming at the Champagne Pools
Situated on the Eastern side of Fraser Island, between Waggy Point and Indian Head, the Champagne Pools are the only place on the island where you can safely swim in seawater.
Itās not allowed to swim on the beach as itās particularly dangerous. There are currents and sharks!
The Champagne Pools are a natural rock formation lying between the ocean and the cliffs. They create natural protection and each time a wave hits the rock, the pool fills up with water.
The waves are so powerful when they crash against the rock that they make the water fizzy and bubbly in the pools, hence the name Champagne pools!
They are a great place to swim on Fraser Island, take photos and enjoy some family time.
Stop 6: Soaking up the views at Indian Head
Indian Head is the most easterly point on the island. Itās situated in the northern part of the 75-mile beach.
This coastal headland is a popular spot on Fraser Island as it features the best views on the island!
You can park on the beach, at the bottom of the cliff. From there, you will see a walking path going up. Take it and walk through the bush until you reach the rocks and cliffs.
From there, you will be able to admire stunning views over the beaches and coast.
Itās also a popular spot to spot whales, dolphins and turtles!
If you are visiting in winter, keep an eye at the horizon to see the whales.
Pro tip: donāt forget to look at the water near the bottom of the cliffs. There are loads of turtles there. People often focus on trying to see the whales and completely miss out on the turtles!
Stop 7: Swimming at Eli Creek
Eli Creek is located by the 75-mile beach near the S.S. Maheno. Itās the largest creek on the eastern side of Fraser Island. The water is so clear and pure!
The sand has been filtering the water for 100s of years which is why itās so clear! The creek pours millions of litres of water into the ocean every hour. Quite impressive if you ask me!
Eli Creek is a very popular place on Fraser Island.
You can stop there for a picnic before going swimming. Most people stay in the part by the beach but itās worth walking on the boardwalk down into the rainforest. It only gets prettier!
As you walk on the path, you will discover more vegetation and can truly appreciate how clear the water is. Itās a bit odd, to be honest, it looks almost green. In reality, itās just completely see-through and the greenish colour comes from the reflection!
Extra activities worth adding your to Fraser Island Itinerary
Hiking the fraser island great walk.
If you want to explore the wilderness of Fraser Island, hiking the Fraser Island Great Walk is a must-do!
This 90km walk runs all the way from Dilli Village in the southern part of the island up to Lake Garawongera.
If you choose to walk the entire trail, you will need about 6-8 days to do so. You can break the walk into 6 sections of maximum 15km per day. There are campgrounds at every milestone.
This is a great way to truly experience Fraser Island, discover the top 5 things to do on Fraser Island and many secret spots!
Before you hit the trail, make sure to be prepared. Fraser Island is a pretty wild place.
There are loads of dingoes and very few facilities. You will need camping equipment, a good backpack, walking shoes and food. Try to take food that is carefully packed so the dingoes canāt smell it.
Alternatively, you can choose to only do parts of it. This is a great option for people who like walking but donāt want to go on such an adventure.
The best section to hike in one day is the one between Lake McKenzie and Central station. The walk is very scenic and itās a great way to discover 2 of the most famous sites on Fraser Island.
Whale watching on Fraser Island
Whale watching is one of the most popular activities on Fraser Island in winter.
Each year from June to October, the whales start their migration up the coast of Australia. There are many places in Australia where you can go whale watching but Fraser Island is definitely one of the best.
There are 2 ways to see the whales from Fraser Island.
If you are self-driving or on tour, you can go to Indian Head. This cliff is known for its beautiful views. In winter, itās also a great spot to see the whales.
If you look at the horizon, you may see whales and even dolphins jumping around.
Of course, you never know if you will see some. You need to be a bit lucky but if there is one place to see them, thatās there!
Another option is going on a whale-watching cruise from Hervey Bay . You will be spending 4 hours on a catamaran and cruise around the Great Sandy Strait. Itās a great way to see the whales up-close. And itās eco-certified!
Click here to see the latest prices.
Dolphin watching on Fraser Island
Want to see dolphins instead of whales? Thatās possible!
A good place to do so on the island is Indian Head. Exactly like for the whales, you can spot dolphins from there. The only issue with that is as dolphins are smaller, they can be harder to spot.
If you want to see it up close, you can opt for a dolphin cruise from Hervey Bay. See prices here.
Discovering Pelican Bank
If you fancy discovering one of Fraser island hidden gems, Pelican bank is the perfect place for you.
Located between Fraser Island and Hervey Bay, Pelican bank is a beautiful stretch of sand featuring crystal-clear blue waters. Itās a great way to explore some lesser-known parts of Fraser Island.
There are no facilities at Pelican Bank so make sure you are taking everything you need with you. Itās very well preserved and off-the-beaten-path!
Itās one of the rare places near Fraser Island where you can swim. The waters are quite shallow which is ideal for kids too!
The best way to get there is by boat from Hervey Bay. You can opt for a half-day tour that includes swimming, fishing and kayaking.
Discovering the aboriginal culture on Fraser Island
The traditional-owners of Fraser Island are the Butchulla people. If you want to know more about their culture, you can opt for a sunset cruise with a Butchulla guide.
Itās extremely interesting. The guide is passionate and will share fascinating facts about Fraser Island.
Learning more about the history of Fraser Island is a very interesting thing and itās pretty unique.
You will also get to hear songs played with the didgeridoo. Itās the ultimate cultural experience on Fraser Island!

Unfortunately, getting to Fraser island is not the easiest thing in the world. The island is entirely made of sand which means you need a 4WD vehicle to be able to get to take the ferry and get around.
If you own one, then you need to do is to get a permit for Fraser, book a ferry ticket and be very aware of the driving conditions on the island.
If not, here are your options.
Fraser Island 4WD hire & ferry
If you want to explore Fraser Island on your own, you can choose to hire a 4WD. There are several options to do that. You can choose to rent a 4WD from one of the usual car rentals or opt for a company specialising in vehicles for Fraser Island.
Fraser Island 4WD dingo is a popular company for that.
Hiring a 4WD for Fraser Island is not cheap but it will give you a lot of freedom to explore the island.
No matter what, you will still need to get a permit (extra cost) and be aware of the tides.
Getting stuck in the sand on Fraser Island is a common issue so if you have no previous experience, you may want to opt for a tour instead.
In terms of ferries, you can either take the Fraser Island Barges ferry from Hervey Bay or the Manta Ray from Rainbow Beach.
Fraser Island tours
Booking a Fraser Island tour is the easiest way to explore the island.
They will take care of everything including food and accommodation. That means you donāt need to worry about being stuck, tides or even preparing your meals.
The tour guide (who is also your driver) has extensive knowledge of the island, its history and will give you plenty of tips.
Going on tour is also a great way to stay safe. Fraser Island is home to a lot of things that can hurt you. Dingoes, snakesā¦ you name it! Guides will give you instructions to stay safe.
Lastly, because they take care of everything, the only thing you have to do is having fun! And believe me, you will have a lot of that!
If you are travelling on your own, itās also a great way to meet people!
Here are the best tours to Fraser Island:

Eurong Beach Resort is an all-time favourite. Itās ideally located right by the 75-mile beach, making it the perfect place to start your exploration of the island.
The facilities are also amazing. There are swimming pools, a bar and plenty more! Click here to see the latest prices.
Kingfisher Bay Resort is a luxury accommodation situated on the western side of the island. The place is very beautiful and modern. If you are looking for a place for a retreat, it will be the perfect place for you. Click here to see the latest prices.
Camping on Fraser island
If you want to enjoy the full Fraser Island experience, going camping is a great way to do so!
You can either opt for bungalow parks such as:
– Fraser Island Retreat . This is the perfect mix between camping and resort. You will be staying in a bungalow. There are a communal kitchen and swimming pools. Itās situated on the 75-mile beach which is a very convenient location. Prices here.
– Orchid Beach Retreat is a 3-bedroom country home in the centre of the island. Perfect to enjoy the nature and the amenities that come with a house! Prices here.
Or you can camp in one of the Great Sandy National Park campgrounds. You will need a permit for that. For more information and see the full list of campgrounds on Fraser Island, check out the official website .

Fraser Island 3-Day Tour: The BEST Fraser Island Tour?
Posted on Last updated: August 30, 2020
Fraser Island, located just off the coast of Australia, is one of the most famous and visited destinations in Australia. The island is famous for its wild nature, driving on sand, rock pools and big freshwater lakes you can swim in.
We did a 3-day tour of Fraser Island and it was one of the best parts of my Australia trip. In this post I’ve listed our exact 3-day itinerary, plus useful information like what to pack and getting there.
If you’re planning a trip to Fraser Island, but aren’t sure whether to go solo or do a tour, this is the guide for you!
All your Fraser Island tour questions will be answered here, so let’s dive in!

- 1.4 What to pack for a Fraser Island tour
- 2.1 Day 1: Travel to Fraser Island & Lake McKenzie

Before you go
Before we jump straight into my Fraser Island 3-day tour I wanted to give you a bit of an introduction about the island and some things you should know.
Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia .
It’s famous for the wild landscapes and rugged feel the island has, if you’re lucky enough you might even see dingoes on Fraser Island!
Driving on Fraser Island
One of the main characteristics of Fraser Island is that there are very few paved roads on the island. The vast majority of driving on Fraser Island is either on sand on the beach or dirt roads, and has to be done driving a 4WD.
To drive a 4WD on Fraser Island you have to be older than 21 and have had your licence for longer than 3 years.
Regardless of how long you’ve had a driving licence though, you have to be comfortable driving on sand and do it carefully.
I’m 24 and have had a driving licence for 5 years, but I didn’t want to drive on Fraser Island (admittedly I drive very little but you get my point).
Driving on the beach on Fraser Island, Australia
Do a Fraser Island tour instead
Which leads on to my next point, if you don’t feel comfortable driving on Fraser Island you can easily do a tour instead. We did a tour with Nomads and it was the best decision we could have made.
We had a knowledgeable and fun guide and a great group of young backpackers to share the experience with. Even if we were only together for three days, it was a good amount of time to make some new friends on the road.
Years later and we’ve met up with our fellow Fraser Island travellers in London and Copenhagen. It’s a great way to meet new people and make lasting and international friendships!

Our Fraser Island 3-day tour group
How to get to Fraser Island: tour starting points
Fraser Island is 15km off the coast of Australia and can be reached by ferry. The main harbour from which you can get the ferry across to Fraser Island is Hervey Bay, which takes approximately 50 minutes.
Alternatively you can get a barge from Rainbow Beach or River Heads.
We picked a tour that started in Noosa Heads since it was easier for us to fly into Sunshine Coast from Melbourne after our Great Ocean Road trip and from there to then fly out to Sydney .
From Noosa Heads we drove to Rainbow Beach and took the barge across to Fraser Island.
If you’re doing an Australia east coast road trip I would recommend adding Fraser Island as a stop during that trip instead of flying in and out like we did as it saves you time.

What to pack for a Fraser Island tour
I thought I’d include some essentials that you should pack and bring with you on Fraser Island.
On our tour they told us to only bring a small day backpack with us and leave our big backpacks or suitcases in Noosa Heads since there isn’t much space in the 4WDs for everyones bags.
So once you’ve got the essential underwear, swimwear, tops and shorts, these are some additional things I think you might need.
Fast drying towel : Bring a fast drying towel with you so that when you go swimming in the creeks or champagne pools or if the hostel doesn’t provide one you have a towel available.
I love the fast drying ones because they dry super quick and take up little space so they’re easy to carry around.
Reusable water bottle : Tap water is drinkable in Australia so why pay for bottled water? Bring a reusable water bottle with you so that you can refill it on the go.
Power bank : Especially if you do the tour with Nomads and are staying in the dorm rooms, there might not be enough sockets for everyone to charge their phones at the end of the day.

Our Fraser Island 3-Day Tour
Day 1: travel to fraser island & lake mckenzie.
We started our Fraser Island tour from Noosa Heads. Before setting off we all locked up our suitcases in the deposit of Nomads Hostel.
Since we would do most of the driving there and back in 4WD jeeps with limited space we were all advised to pack a small bag for the 3 days.
We left Nomads around 8AM and after a couple hours drive we reached Rainbow Beach, where we swapped out our tour bus for the 4WD jeeps.
The tour we did was called a “Tag Along Tour”, meaning that our tour guide would be driving the first 4WD and taking turns other tour participants would be driving the other jeeps in single file following the lead of the first jeep.
Driving on the beach in Australia
From the jeep depot it was a short drive to Rainbow Beach where we then got the ferry across to Fraser Island. Don’t expect to find a harbour.
I got off the jeep and looked around for somewhere for the ferry to dock and was surprised to find we were on a beach, with nothing else in sight other than sand, sea and palm trees.
The ferry docks directly on the sand and you have to drive your 4WD on it.
The ferry journey from Rainbow Beach to Fraser Island is only around 15 minutes but you can step out from the car to enjoy some fresh air and check out the view during the crossing, just make sure to be back in when it’s time to drive off.
As soon as we docked on Fraser Island we immediately had our first experience driving on sand and on dirt roads. We drove straight to the hostel to drop off our bags and have lunch.
Driving on Fraser Island, Australia
Our group was pretty big so we had four jeeps and each car was assigned one meal duty, in turns we all had to help cook and clean.
Top tip; get on a lunch duty if you can, lunch is usually wraps and sandwiches so it’s much easier to prep and clean up!
After lunch we set off en-route to Lake McKenzie, one of the most popular attractions on Fraser Island.
Lake McKenzie is a huge freshwater lake with crystal clear turquoise water and surrounded by fine white sand, it basically feels like being on a tropical beach!
Our guide took out a beach volleyball, frisbee and other beach type games for us to play around with while there. On the way back we did a bit of driving both on the sand and inland in the dirt roads of Fraser Island.
In the evening we had dinner at the hostel and spent some time socialising at the hostel bar. We had the option of either staying in a tent or a dorm, you just have to select what you prefer when you book.

Day 2: Eli Creek, Champagne Pools & SS Maheno
Day 2 started bright and early and after a quick breakfast of cereal and toast we set off en-route towards Eli Creek. Eli Creek is a powerful freshwater creek that pour million of litres of clear water into the ocean every day.
There is a very strong current in the creek so no need to swim, you can just float and let the fast flowing water carry you to the beach.
We parked the 4WDs on the beach and from there followed a wooden boardwalk that follows the creek inland for about 5 minutes, where you will then find steps that let you get in the creek.
The strong current lifts a lot of sand from the bottom of the creek so you might have to jiggle a bit of sand out of your swimsuit when you decide to leave.
Eli Creek on Fraser Island, Australia
From Eli Creek we continued our day in search of cool swimming spots and drove onwards to the famous Champagne Pools.
These are big rock pools on the coast of Fraser Island and the only place where you can safely swim in the sea on Fraser Island.
The beaches of Fraser Island are extremely dangerous, with strong waves and currents and infested by sharks and poisonous jellyfish (I’m exaggerating a little here but you get the gist of it).
The rock formations of the Champagne Pools create pools of relatively calm seawater, where you can swim in safety.
Big waves will occasionally crash into the pools and cause you to get floated around a bit, this isn’t usually dangerous and just adds to the excitement of the location.
Just make sure to always be careful not to slip on the rocks or swim too close to them as the current might push you against them.
The champagne pools of Fraser Island, Australia
After all the swimming in creeks and rock pools we then stopped at a camping ground for lunch.
On the drive back to the hostel we did a stop at Indian Heads; an interesting rock formation that has epic views over the coastline of Fraser Island.
Indian Heads is also an important site for aboriginal history and should be respected.
The view from Indian Heads on Fraser Island, Australia
During the drive back we also stopped at the famous SS Maheno shipwreck.
The ship was originally part of the New Zealand naval forces and ran aground on Fraser Island in 1935 during a cyclone.
Attempts to make the ship operational again have all failed, and it now remains on Fraser Island as a popular tourist attraction. We spent the evening once again having dinner and drinks at the hostel.

Day 3: Lake Wabby
On our final day in Fraser Island we visited Lake Wabby, another popular freshwater lake that you can swim in. The water isn’t as clear as in Lake McKenzie, but the surroundings are more scenic.
We had to park our jeeps on the beach and then walk for 45 minutes in the trees to reach the lake. The final stretch of walk is on huge sand dunes with a rather impressive incline that ends into the lake.
Our guide drove us to the parking area but didn’t come to the lake with us. Before setting off he specifically told us not to run down the slope and jump into the lake as the water is quite shallow and you can get hurt.
Guess what the boys did? They ran down the slope and jumped into the lake.
As you can imagine, one of them sprained an ankle and as a group we then had to take turns carrying him back to the beach for 45 minutes since he couldn’t walk.
Moral of the story, follow the instructions of your guide, they know better. After visiting Lake Wabby we had lunch at the hostel before leaving Fraser Island and heading back to mainland Australia and Noosa Heads.
Included in our tour package was a post-tour night at Nomads Noosa Hostel, where we had a big end of the tour party with all the other participants.

Final thoughts on doing a Fraser Island tour
Have you been to Fraser Island before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below! For me the Fraser Island 3-day tour we did was me one of the highlights of my whole Australia trip.
I loved the wild beauty of the island, and exploring it with a big group of travellers my same age made it all the more fun. As much as I love doing my own thing, sometimes I prefer to have a guide and a group to travel with.
I hope you will find this post useful in planning your own 3-day tour to Fraser Island!
