Perfect for minimalist jewelry wearers, the interior has plenty of room and designated spots for several rings and earrings, but there aren’t specific latches for necklaces or bracelets. The two slip pockets on each side of the case can hold bigger or longer pieces of jewelry, but they run the risk of getting tangled without a latch so we wish the organization was a bit better. Made with genuine leather, the case has a protective exterior with a soft suede interior to further guard the jewelry against scratching or other damage. Throughout six months of tests, we loved this case for weekend getaways and longer trips alike and found it to be the perfect size to toss in a backpack or personal item.

The quality feels a bit lower than other cases we tried.

Designed similarly to a toiletry bag, we love that this wallet-friendly jewelry case comes with a top handle to transport it to and from a suitcase with ease. The compact bag is also a great deal considering how much jewelry it can hold while still being easy to pack. The polyester material is protective and flexible so the bag can pack down to a smaller size depending on how much jewelry is inside. The interior has an earring panel, ring bands, necklace clips, and various zippered pockets for storing all of the jewelry you want to pack for a trip. While we didn’t notice any issues with quality during testing, the materials feel less durable than other pricier cases we tried. We tossed the packed jewelry case around a bit during our tests and the items remained perfectly safe without any tangling or damage. Even after traveling with the case on seven flights, trains, and throughout more than four roadtrips during our six months of tests, nothing became tangled and the case is proving to be durable and sturdy.

Bagsmart impressed us a second time with their roll-up jewelry organizer, which was the easiest bag to pack with jewelry during testing. After six months of use, we love that it can fit a lot of jewelry and has compartments big enough for even the biggest hoops and other dramatic earrings. The envelope-style case unrolls and lies flat so you can easily see all of the pockets, latches, and hooks for storing every piece of jewelry you could ever need for traveling thanks to the larger capacity. We had some slight difficulty getting earrings into the holes in the earring card, but it was just a minor inconvenience, and there are plenty of other spots to place hoops and studs. Made with cotton fabric, the case may feel a bit flimsy, but is soft and protective, and it’s very compact since it can lie fairly flat even after it’s packed with jewelry.

The square-shaped case has a sturdy exterior that feels like it will hold up perfectly in a packed carry-on and the pebbled vegan leather gives the box a sophisticated look while sitting on a desk or dresser. The case also comes with a small matching zippered pouch that you can keep in the box or remove for extra storage. We found this separate pouch to be perfect for use on shorter trips when you may not need to bring the full case. While we wish the box had a few more organizational features like necklace hooks or earring holes, the jewelry remained perfectly intact after we shook it around, so we’re confident that the box keeps items safely tucked away. Plus, after six months of use, the stylish case still looks new and is a great option for home storage, too.

Despite its compact stature, this jewelry box can fit tons of jewelry from studs to a leather watch. It’s intuitive to pack the case with rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more since there are designated latches, slots, and compartments for virtually everything. When we shook the case, all of the jewelry remained packed away in its original spot without any damage occurring. The box has a divider with a mirror on one side and our only worry is that the mirror could get scratched by the metals or vice-versa, so you may want to put a small piece of fabric between the mirror just in case.

It is on the small side with minimum space for studs, but light packers will appreciate the hard, durable exterior that still looks new after six months. The genuine leather exterior and suede interior feels luxurious and looks elegant, so this also makes a great jewelry case for newlyweds going on a honeymoon . We especially love the tiny zippered pocket in the middle of the case for storing extra small jewelry items like studs or stacking rings.

The circular case is made entirely of recycled materials from post-consumer plastic water bottles and upcycled zippers to create an eco-friendly accessory for travel. Besides the sustainability factor, the case comes with a large drawstring pouch that makes it easy to drop in larger pieces of jewelry like bracelets or watches. The top flap of the case has a ring holder and earring post to store smaller pieces of jewelry, but we wish there were a few more organization features like necklace latches or zippered pockets. However, we love the vintage-style design and, like most Paravel bags, you can monogram the case with initials for a special touch.

Mejuri Travel Case : The case looks elegant and sleek on the outside, but the interior doesn’t offer much in the organizational department, so it’s best for minimalist travelers.

Our Testing Process

After thoroughly researching jewelry cases from trusted brands, we selected 25 options to first test out in our New York City lab. We packed each case with every type of jewelry you can think of, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, watches, and more to get a feel for the usefulness of the organization features. Then, we tossed, dropped, and shook the cases (think Kourtney Kardashian level of salad bowl shaking) to see if the jewelry remained safely secured in place or if the pieces moved around. We also examined the cases for any scuffing or damage.

With our lab testing portion complete, we then rated the jewelry cases based on ease of use, capacity, design, and quality to determine the winners. We will continue to test the jewelry cases for an additional six months so we can see how each one performs while traveling in a more natural setting after the lab testing.

Tips for Buying a Jewelry Case

Buy the right size case.

First, you’ll want to think about how much jewelry you travel with to determine the best size for your needs. For those who travel with bigger pieces of jewelry like watches or chunky necklaces, consider getting a more structured case with large compartments. Delicate or minimalist jewelry will pack better in an envelope or binder style of jewelry case. And if your jewelry collection consists of just a few pieces, opt for a mini jewelry case to save space in your luggage.

Consider organization

Most jewelry cases come with latches, hooks, pockets, and pillows to hold pretty much any piece of jewelry you can think of. Like other types of travel organizers , some jewelry cases are more barebones than others, so you’ll want to buy a case according to your organization preferences or based on the type of jewelry you travel most with. If most of your jewelry consists of earrings, be sure to get a box that has pockets and hole cards with spots for hoops, studs, and dangling earrings.

The best way to keep your jewelry safe and organized is to use a jewelry case. The best thing about travel jewelry cases is that they often come with designated slots for all types of accessories to make packing intuitive and quick. It kept everything organized and in place during our test, and while it doesn’t feel the most durable or extravagant as others we tested, the functionality and price point make it easy for us to recommend.

There are tons of rows to place earrings, and the separate compartments at the bottom are nice for keeping medium and large pieces organized. We also appreciate that it comes with a removable pouch and the design is sturdy and easy to pack and unpack. It’s just a bit heavy for traveling with (especially for storing in carry-on luggage), but it’s a nice option if you have a lot of jewelry and accessories to take with you. It’s also fitting if you want a case to organize your jewelry at home—the design is simple and would look nice on your dresser.

Though it’s small, it’s well-designed to fit earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets—they all have a designated place. We do appreciate that the earring card features a mirror in the center which is convenient to have on hand while traveling. We had no issues with the jewelry moving around during our shake test, and we felt that it was intuitive to pack and easy to get the pieces out when needed.

As with most things in life, not every jewelry organizer is right for everyone. Evaluate your collection and what you most often reach for when traveling before you purchase anything. Then make it a priority to find an organizer that's vertically-oriented with clasped necklace loops and elastic security bands. Or, on the flipside, if you prefer your dangly earrings but could forgo most necklaces, then opt for a case with a large earring grid. And if you're just trying to save the most space as possible while not leaving your favorite pieces at home, not to worry: there are tons of options available to you.

There are a few features you'll want to familiarize yourself with before you start shopping for a travel jewelry organizer:

• Necklace loops—these are small tabs that you loop a necklace onto and let it hang down. They can come with a security clasp as well as elastic bands and elastic pouches to keep them in place to avoid tangling.
• Earring grid—this small panel has holes for you to pierce your earrings through and store them conveniently.
• Ring cushion—small cylindrical pillows bunched together make this cushion a secure spot to stash your rings.
• Ring band—this band usually has one or both sides clasped, so you can unclasp and slip your rings onto it for a secure hold.
• Zippered pouches—these are ideal for storing bracelets, but they can also work well for earrings and rings if your organizer doesn't have a grid, cushion, or band. We don't recommend storing necklaces in pouches due to the potential for tangling.

And, with that, you've got everything you need to get shopping. Your organized travels await!

Sleek, stylish, and efficient? We're sold. This organizer is the definition of small but mighty, able to fit an incredible amount of jewelry with great design that will protect your precious pieces. It has five clasped necklace loops with an elastic security band and five individual elastic pouches; three large, clear zippered pockets; an earring grid able to fit 13 pairs; and two ring bands. And all of that fits into a case the size of a small clutch. Absolutely no complaints.

This small jewelry box is perfect starter for the gals who are just beginning their collection. It has three necklace loops, a ring cushion, and three small compartments for earrings and bracelets. There's also a divider panel that has a mirror for quick makeup touch-ups. It's the perfect piece for a weekend getaway or to toss in your purse and go. Our one complaint: the necklace loops don't have security clasps.

This wallet-sized organizer packs quite the punch with three zippered pockets, a ring band, and an earring grid suitable for up to nine pairs. This probably isn't an ideal option if you travel with plenty of necklaces as there's no way to keep them untangled, but if you're okay with that, then this sleek organizer will save you plenty of luggage space.

The layout of this beautifully designed jewelry box is what really got our attention. The top easily stores necklaces with five loops and an elastic pouch, and then an earring grid panel separates the other compartment that contains a ring cushion and three small divided sections.

While we love the design, we don't love that this organizer relies on a clasp and not a zipper for closing, and that the necklace loops don't clasp for extra prevention of tangling.

A similar design to the clasped jewelry box above, this semi-circle option provides a bit more room, with a large earring grid panel and ring cushion as well as an additional storage compartment. It also has a zippered exterior. It is worth noting, though, that this organizer also doesn't have clasps on its necklace loops.

Binder-style jewelry storage can get a bad wrap for being bulky, but that couldn't be farther from the truth for this mini book. It has a whopping 50 zippered pouches that are great for storing earrings, rings, and bracelets. While most necklaces would fit, we don't recommend binder storage like this for them as they're prone to tangling.

This jewelry roll truly has more compartments and holders than we can count, so we'll let the visual speak for itself. One side has clear pouches while the other uses a loop system and elastic bands to hold necklaces, and the entire organizer rolls or folds up to the size of a small clutch.

One thing to note about this organizer is that the pouches aren't zippered. So while your earrings, rings, and bracelets are most likely okay when the organizer is rolled up, there's no guarantee that one or two won't fall out.

Minimalist jewelry lovers, this is the organizer for you. Ten necklace loops with two elastic security bands, an earring grid that holds nine pairs, a ring band, and four zippered pouches provide tons of free space for the dainty jewelry you love. While this organizer doesn't provide a lot of room for big earrings or long necklaces, it's the perfect option if you love to make a statement with layering your jewelry rather than wearing large pieces.

If packing light is the name of your travel game, then you're going to love this organizer. It has a slim design but packs a punch with how much it can hold, with three zippered pockets, a ring band, an earring grid that holds eight pairs, and four necklace loops with clasps and elastic band and pouch. It should have more than enough room for even a week-long trip without taking up way too much space in your luggage.

This small jewelry case is great for sectioning out your jewelry options per outfit when traveling. With three different tiers, there's plenty of room to plan an entire outfit's accessories for a short trip.

Because it's so small, this organizer might not be ideal for longer necklaces, but we wouldn't fear them getting tangled too much thanks to the dual elastic pouches for storage.

It's chic but practical: lift the lid to find two earring grid bands that fit 12 pairs, a ring cushion, a 4-way divided compartment, and a single compartment for bracelets.

Binder jewelry organizers aren't for everyone, but those who have them LOVE them. They're easy to lay flat in a suitcase or toss into a carry-on bag and allow you to easily see each and every piece you brought thanks to the individual clear pouches. These are also great for the gals who buy way more jewelry than they can ever wear—but, hey, they can dream, right?

Bringing the convenience of the binder organizer to the traditional case is this magnificent jewelry stash. It has six transparent pages of pouches combined with 12 necklace holders with an elastic band, elastic pouches, and an earring grid for nine pairs. Bracelets and rings can easily store away in the pages and be seen quickly.

There's one feature we're hesitant about with this organizer: the necklace holder. It's not a traditional loop, but more a cutout in a piece of leather. The elastic band would most likely be all the security you'd need against tangling, but it's an important note to make if you're necklaces tangle easily.

Dual Travel Organizer

One of the easiest ways to save space when traveling is picking products that can play double duty like this organizer. The top compartment functions as a makeup bag while the zippered bottom portion is a jewelry case. There's a large and small option, and while both have a ring cushion, covered compartment, and mirror, the large size has a second covered compartment.

We especially love the clasps for the necklace straps to make sure your jewelry stays in place.

The only negative with this jewelry case is that there's no elastic holds for your necklaces, so they run the risk of possibly getting tangled.

Pocmimut Makeup and Jewelry Bag

Another makeup/jewelry bag duo, this option is slightly larger than the Mark & Graham version. It also has a special pouch for makeup brushes, making it great if you don't think the large Mark & Graham bag will be enough room for you. The jewelry case has an earring grid, ring band, necklace loop, and two elastic pouches. We really love the design of the necklace loops on this one. Not only do the loops clasp, but there's also an elastic band to keep them totally in place.

While this organizer gives you more room for your makeup and jewelry, that also means it'll take up more space in your luggage. If you like to pack light, then this is not the option for you.

Do you prefer to section your jewelry out by individual pieces or even coordinating for an outfit? Then this is the case for you. It has six small, clear, zippered pouches that are perfect for setting aside a day of jewelry or individual pieces if you worry about tangling.

KAMIER Travel Jewelry Case

This jewelry case might be small, but it can pack quite a bit inside. It includes a removable earring grid that can hold six pairs, a ring cushion, four additional compartments, as well as four necklace loops with an elastic pouch.

As with most small jewelry cases, this one isn't ideal for bangles or other stiff bracelets. Another downside is that it lacks clasps for the necklace loops. Additionally, the exterior is sealed using a clasp and not a zipper, an outlier in comparison to the rest of the cases on this list.

UnionPlus Roll Bag Organizer for Necklaces

Mainly into necklaces? Then there's definitely no need for you to have a large jewelry case with all the fixings. This roll bag has nine compartments so your necklaces to lay individually and you won't have to worry about them getting tangled.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
