Africa Safaris For Seniors: 7 Spots Travelers Love (With Tips!)

With their abundant wildlife, fascinating cultures, breathtaking landscapes and endless adventure, Africa safaris for seniors are a bucket list trip for many travelers in their golden years. But with so many safari destinations to choose from (South Africa! Botswana! The Serengeti!), it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. And once you have decided to make your dream vacation a reality, what can you do to ensure your senior safari is a roaring success?

Not to worry! With almost thirty years of experience planning and running African safaris, many for intrepid older travelers like you, our expert team at Good Earth Tours has you covered. Bring a pencil, some paper and your sense of adventure as we share our most recommended countries for African safaris for seniors and valuable tips to help your trip go off without a hitch.

From Cape Town to Kenya: The Best Destinations for African Safari Tours for Seniors

So, which African safari destinations are best for senior travelers? That depends on your interests, what kind of wildlife you hope to see, and the experience you would like to have. Some countries are perfect for adventure and animal lovers, with bush walks galore. Other top destinations for a senior safari offer animal encounters and cultural experiences in equal measure. Many Africa tours for seniors will even incorporate more than one country, providing you with a more well-rounded picture of this vast continent. Ready to explore your options? Here are our most recommended African safari destinations for older adults.

From the Great Migration and the Big Five to natural wonders like Mount Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro Crater to tropical white-sand beaches lining the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, Tanzania has it all. In short, if you want to combine the thrill of an African safari with the blissful relaxation of a seaside vacation, all this one visa stamp, then Tanzania is the country for you.

Here, you’ll find what is arguably Africa’s premier safari destination, Serengeti National Park. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981, this 5,700-square-mile (14,763-square-kilometer) national park boasts 3,700,000 acres (1,500,000 hectares) of pristine savanna, as well as the continent’s largest population of lions. It is also home to the vast majority of the Great Migration, the planet’s biggest annual animal migration, where massive herds of wildebeest and zebra, totaling more than 1.5 million and 250,000, respectively, thunder across the plains alongside eland and Thomson’s gazelle throughout the year.

Almost as impressive is the neighboring Ngorongoro Crater. This gigantic intact volcanic caldera, the largest on the planet, collapsed in on itself after an enormous explosion some three million years ago. Today, the crater is a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the adjacent Olduvai Gorge, nicknamed the “cradle of humankind.” This natural enclosure also hosts around 25,000 large mammals, including the Big Five, making it possible for seniors to spot all five animals in one day.

Lastly, we can’t talk about Tanzania without mentioning Mount Kilimanjaro. The globe’s biggest free-standing mountain and the tallest peak on the continent, this sleeping, snow-capped volcano towers 19,340 feet (5,895 meters) above sea level, earning it the nickname of the “Roof of Africa.” Luckily, you don’t have to scale its lofty heights to experience its awe-inspiring beauty. On a clear day, this majestic mountain can be viewed from 100 miles or more away.

Africa Safaris For Seniors also involves trekking

Why We Love It

  • Unparalleled game viewing at the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, including the bulk of the Great Wildebeest Migration, as well as the Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Heavy investment in infrastructure means top-notch accommodations, easily accessible safari destinations through major airports near Dar es Salaam and Arusha, seamless transfers and a more comfortable travel experience.
  • Long stretches of lush coastline and the island of Zanzibar offer the perfect beachy bookend to any senior safari in Tanzania.

Tanzania’s neighbor to the north, Kenya is another country in East Africa that boasts all of the Big Five. It is also the only other place in Africa where you can witness the Great Migration, which rumbles through the Masai Mara National Reserve from late July through early November. For this reason, the Masai Mara is right up there with the Serengeti when it comes to Africa’s best senior safari destinations. In fact, in a few aspects, it is even better. Due to the reserve’s much smaller size, only 585 square miles (1,510 kilometers) by comparison, the year-round concentration of wildlife in the Masai Mara is much greater. As a result, you can see more animals in less time during a safari here.

Like Tanzania, Kenya touts several safari destinations worth visiting, like the Sweetwaters Game Reserve, the Samburu National Reserve, and Tsavo National Park. Along with the Masai Mara, another must-visit wilderness area is Amboseli National Park, a compact park and UNESCO World Heritage site in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro famed for its impressive elephant population. Though only 151 square miles (392 kilometers) in size, Amboseli has more than 1,600 free-roaming elephants that call the park home, a precious few of which are so-called super tuskers known for their impressively long tusks. Of the roughly 25 super tuskers still alive, around ten can be found in Amboseli. Here, visitors can marvel at these gentle giants as they gather in herds of as many as 100 elephants, a sight made even more breathtaking with Kilimanjaro rising in the background.

However, wildlife isn’t the only reason to embark on a senior safari in Kenya. This East African nation together with its southern neighbor Tanzania, lays claim to one of the continent’s most fascinating (and famous) tribes: the Maasai. Known for their colorful culture and traditions, their distinctive dress, their incredible height, and their reputation for being as friendly as they are courageous, the Masaai are pastoralists, meaning that they move their homes and livestock according to rainfall and grazing opportunities, and the guardians of the Masai Mara. Many Kenya safaris include a visit to a Masaai village, offering a captivating glimpse into nomadic life on Kenya’s plains.

  • Outstanding opportunities for wildlife viewing, including the Masai Mara (and the Great Migration) and the elephants of Amboseli National Park.
  • Rich cultural experiences like visits to a Maasai village.
  • Extensive development means that areas are easily accessible; however, due to the vast distances between wilderness areas, flying between locations may be preferred.
  • Access to luxury lodges and renowned conservation outposts like the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Masai mara in kenya for Africa Safaris For Seniors

South Africa

When it comes to the top locations for safaris for seniors, South Africa is the cream of the crop, with ruggedly beautiful wilderness areas teeming with the Big Five, verdant vineyards home to some of the best wines in the world and vibrant cultures rich in fascinating traditions. Best of all, a fantastically developed tourism infrastructure network makes experiencing South Africa a breeze, and a must for seniors on safari.

No trip to South Africa is complete without a visit to Kruger National Park. At a massive 7,576 square miles (roughly 19,623 square kilometers) in size, Kruger National Park is South Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary and one of the biggest game reserves in Africa. Unsurprisingly, it’s a must-see destination for many travelers passing through Southern Africa—a well-deserved title, to be sure! Most notably, Kruger offers the widest array of large-mammal species of any African game reserve, a huge selling point for animal-loving seniors. It is also very accessible, with paved roads throughout. (Intrepid adventurers can even explore the park independently with a self-drive safari.)

That said, its extensive size and roadway system come at a cost. Although the park’s significant sprawl gives all those elephants, rhinos, lions and leopards plenty of room to roam, it also means they have more places to hide away from visitors, further compounded by Kruger ‘s paved roads. While these smooth streets are much more enjoyable to ride on than bumpy dirt or stretches of grass, the consistent traffic they see often causes wildlife to give them a wide berth. Luckily, savvy senior traveler’s (like those who travel with Good Earth Tours) can enjoy the best of both worlds by including a visit to one of Kruger National Park’s private game reserves, like the popular Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Here, senior safari-goers can experience all the perks that a Kruger safari offers, like Big 5 sightings, but with fewer fellow traveler’s and exclusive opportunities like walking safaris and nighttime and/or off-road game drives.

After all those animal encounters, there is no better way to unwind than to visit South Africa’s Cape Winelands and the coastal city of Cape Town. Located an easy flight away, Cape Town has something for everyone, whether dramatic mountains, relaxing beaches, lush vineyards, decadent culinary experiences or bustling city life. That’s right—Cape Town isn’t just South Africa’s capital city. The Cape Winelands is also one of the world’s greatest wine capitals, with around 2,700 wine grape farmers, more than 20 wine routes and five wine regions. Add in other incredible activities like biking, whale watching and hiking, and Cape Town is the perfect bookend for any South Africa safaris for seniors.

  • Exceptional game drives through Kruger National Park and its surrounding private game reserves.
  • Cosmopolitan Cape Town and the greater Cape Winelands offer plentiful opportunities for big-city adventures, outdoor activities, vineyard visits, coastal relaxation and a taste of South African culture.
  • Easily accessible and enjoyable to get around, thanks to regular daily flights in and out of OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and a well-connected system of roadways.
  • A developed transportation system makes getting to other popular African safari for seniors locations nearby, like Botswana and Victoria Falls, both simple and comfortable.

From the swampy Okavango Delta and the steamy Chobe River to the sandy savanna of the Kalahari Desert and the otherworldly salt flats of the Makadikadi Basin, Botswana is a land of stunning contrasts. This jaw-dropping diversity makes Botswana the ideal destination for travelers seeking a comprehensive, multifaceted safari experience. After all, if you’re only going to make it to Africa once, why should you confine yourself to only one of its many breathtaking settings when it has so much more than grasslands to enjoy?

A Botswana safari combines many of Africa’s most striking landscapes into one convenient trip, allowing seniors to see dusty plains and lush waterways, all alive with incredible wildlife, without ever crossing the country’s borders. What’s more, given Botswana’s location neighboring Zimbabwe and Zambia, it is even possible to add on a short visit to Victoria Falls, one of the world’s largest waterfalls, or to other nearby countries like South Africa or Namibia. If that wasn’t enough to convince you, Botswana also boasts a mild climate, regional airports that make traveling between the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park a cinch, and some of the most luxurious and exclusive safari lodges in Africa. It sounds like it’s the perfect place for African safaris for seniors!

Botswana’s beauty is unparalleled, starting with the verdant Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site largely protected by the Moremi Game Reserve. Dotted by seasonally flooded grasslands, this vast cluster of permanent swamps and winding waterways pulsates with life, namely all of the Big Five species and many, many others, including giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, wildebeest, and more. Fueled by the mighty Chobe River, the similarly aquatic Chobe National Park is equally remarkable. Although you will find predators like lions here, at Chobe National Park, elephants are the kings of the jungle. Also called “The Land of the Giants,” this national park touts the highest concentration of elephants in Africa, at upwards of 100,000.

What makes a Botswana safari even more special, however, is the unique vantage point offered during game viewing. Along with game drives in regular safari vehicles like open-air 4x4s, travelers on African safari tours through Botswana can also take in the views from a breezy boat out on the water. Whether the crystal-clear depths of the Okavango Delta or a shimmering stretch of the Chobe, water is the lifeblood of Africa’s wildlife. And since great swathes of water are available all year round in Botswana, this senior safari destination sees scores of animals even during the dry season, making for immersive game-viewing experiences you can’t get anywhere else. And with on-the-water options ranging from motorized boats with onboard bathrooms to a traditional mokoro dugout canoe, there is something for everyone.

  • Unparraleled on-the-water wildlife safaris on the Chobe River or in the Okavango Delta.
  • Regional airports near wilderness areas allow for convenient and comfortable fly-in safaris.

Chobe River in Bostwana for Africa Safaris For Seniors

Victoria Falls

Nestled along the magnificent Zambezi River, Victoria Falls straddles the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, not far from popular safari locations like South Africa and Botswana. Between its massive width of 5,604 feet (1,708 meters) and a towering height of 354 feet (108 meters), fed by five separate falls, this majestic waterfall touts the largest sheet of falling water on the planet.

Not only is Victoria Falls breathtakingly, soul-stirringly beautiful, but it’s also surprisingly easy to see during a safari through Southern Africa. Not to mention, true thrill seekers can even swim along the waterfall’s lip in Devil’s Pool during the low season, from August to December, even if they have only adequate swimming skills. As for other ways of experiencing the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, you’re limited only by your sense of adventure and the amount of time you have in the area, with activities like helicopter rides, whitewater rafting, ziplining, and even bungee jumping available.

  • Easy to combine with a trip to nearby safari hotspots like East Africa, Botswana and South Africa.
  • A wide variety of viewing opportunities to match an array of interests and activity levels.
  • Accommodations are available in an array of styles and budgets.

Africa is home to an incredible menagerie of animals. The most famous of these are the Big 5—lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and water buffalo—which can be seen in many countries across the continent. Equally popular, though considerably harder to spot, is the mountain gorilla. Found in the misty hillside rainforests of the Congo Basin, these elusive great apes have dwindled in number since their discovery in 1902 and now count only a little more than 1,000 in their population. Fortunately, despite threats from poachers, mountain gorillas are on the rebound. Today, one of the best and easiest places to see them is Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

Given the mountain homes of this gorilla subspecies, a trek to see them isn’t for the faint-hearted. Some level of physical fitness is required, as you must hike through the bamboo-covered Virunga Mountains for anywhere from one to four hours or more to reach them. Still, as long as you plan accordingly, gorilla trekking in Rwanda can still be readily achievable for older clients. Having a fitness routine and investing in appropriate gear before your arrival will set you up for success. Then, once you’re on the ground, porters can be arranged to help you carry your items, and you may even be able to request a closer gorilla family at your early-morning briefing so that you don’t need to trek as far. You’ll also be happy to hear that Rwanda has the reputation of being the most accessible destination for gorilla trekking, as the trails are usually more open and easier to manage, and troops are typically located within a two-hour hike of the trailhead.

That said, be prepared to pay for convenience, as gorilla trekking in Rwanda is usually double the cost of a similar African safari experience in Rwanda. On the bright side, these mountain adventures tend to be much shorter, lasting only two or three nights, making them a quick and convenient extension to a safari through a neighboring East Africa nation.

  • Magnificent mountain vistas peppered with easily accessible troops of mountain gorillas.
  • Easily combinable with a visit to other East Africa safaris for seniors spots like Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
  • The country’s compact size makes travel within, as well as to and from, relatively quick and easy.

Wildlife during Africa Safaris For Seniors

Rwanda isn’t the only place seniors can see mountain gorillas on safari in Africa. Nearby Uganda is actually home to more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population and two trekking locations: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the destination of choice for Good Earth Tours due to its biodiversity, as well as its significantly larger number of habituated gorilla groups (troops that have been introduced to the presence of humans and can be visited by safari-goers).

Like in Rwanda, the same physical concerns and accommodations remain for a primate-tracking safari in Uganda. In fact, in some cases, hiking here can be even more challenging, with longer treks and more variable terrain. Still, due to the nature of these wild animals, nothing is set in stone, and you could very well be in and out of the forest in only three hours. Plus, the surge of adrenaline, the thrill of the chase and the anticipation of seeing these incredible creatures are powerful motivators to keep you going. Best of all, a gorilla permit in Uganda costs significantly less than in Rwanda, ringing in at only $800 per person as of July 2024 (up from $700) rather than $1,500 for Rwanda.

  • Close encounters with a variety of primates, including mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and colobus monkeys.
  • More affordable than gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

African Safaris for Seniors: How to Make Your Trip a Success

So, you’ve finally decided to step outside your comfort zone and check an African safari off your travel bucket list. Congratulations! No matter where you choose to go, you’re sure to have the adventure of a lifetime. Like Ernest Hemingway once said, “I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I was not happy.” However, before you can have your own glorious mornings beneath the African sun, there are a few things you should do to set yourself up for vacation success.

Let Your Interests and Budget (and Your Knowledgeable Safari Planner) Be Your Guide

Africa is as varied as it is vast. The same can be said for an African safari. While spotting incredible animals is a given, a journey through Africa can include desert landscapes or mountain vistas, tropical beaches or marshy swamps, quaint tribal villages or bustling big cities, vibrant cultural experiences or decadent dining. So, think of each African safari as an opportunity to choose your own adventure. The only limit is your imagination—and your travel budget.

Fortunately, professional safari planners (like us here at Good Earth Tours) can customize the perfect experience for your interests and budgetary guidelines, whether that includes luxurious lodges and flights between destinations or thriftier options like value accommodations (like camping!) and overlanding. As born-and-raised Africans and safari experts, we know the best lodges available in a variety of price ranges and the best times to travel to your dream destination, from the Cape Winelands of South Africa to Tanzania’s Serengeti. Out team includes experienced professional guides who will bring your travel vision to life, allowing you to see Africa in all its glory.

Ask Questions and Make Requests

Advocating for your wants and needs is an important part of planning any vacation, but especially an African safari for seniors. Take advantage of your tour operator’s knowledge and connections to create the safari that works best for you. If you have mobility challenges, request to stay in a guest room that is close to the lodge’s main amenities, like the restaurant or lobby. Or, if you’re going gorilla trekking, ask to visit a group that is closer to the trailhead so you won’t have to walk as far. Your safari is what you make it, so make your experience work for you. You can share with us any details of your preferences or limitations, and we will be sure to advocate on your behalf.

Pack and Prepare Accordingly

The last thing you want is to be miserable in the wilderness halfway across the world, especially when you’re supposed to be having the time of your life. So, take steps ahead of time to ensure your safari goes off without a hitch. This can include packing an array of gear to accommodate a variety of weather conditions, like a jacket or thick sweater for early-morning game drives during the cooler months, or medicines such as antimalarials or antacids. If you’re going to embark on a gorilla trek or another more intense game-viewing experience, you might also want to consider a workout routine to improve your fitness. Something as simple as regular walks on a treadmill on incline or an easy hike can go a long way.

Consider a Fly-In Safari Rather Than Overlanding for Certain Destinations

Depending on which destinations you choose to visit, you may want to do a fly-in safari instead of driving from place to place to place. Due to the sheer size of Africa, traveling between countries and even game reserves can take quite a long time. For example, it can take between seven to nine hours or more to travel between the Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park even though they are both located in the south of Kenya. Not only does this take up a lot of precious safari time, but because of the often rough condition of the roads, it can also be very uncomfortable, especially for older travelers. Flying from location to location on a light aircraft solves both problems, saving both your time and backside.

The 8-Night Botswana Safari and Victoria Falls Safari includes :

  • game drives in Botswana’s finest wildlife areas
  • a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River
  • a guided tour of Victoria Falls
  • free pickup at Maun Airport

* Wheelchair Accessible

Botswana is my personal favourite country for a safari. The wildlife sightings are unforgettable, and the landscape itself is breathtaking. I’ve spent weeks at a time here, and always hate to leave.

When you add to this the spectacle of Victoria Falls, you have an unbeatable trip. This package also includes short flights between some of the locations.

This cuts down on drive time, allowing more time for seeing the sights.

And it starts from the safari town of Maun , which in itself has some great sights to see. You’ll board a charter flight from there to the Central Kalahari National Park, home to the famous black-maned Kalahari lions.

Wonderful trip and experience for us. Very well organised and professional from start to finish… our guide was excellent and had lots of interesting information to share. Absolutely recommend them to organise your trip. – read more reviews

From there you’ll fly into the incredible Okavango Delta. The lush and beautiful Delta is known for its impressive variety of wildlife. More than 130 species of mammals and almost 500 species of birds are here for you to see.

Another short flight takes you to The Land of the Giants, as Chobe National Park is often called. This is due, of course, to the huge herd of elephants that roam the area.

Twice daily game drives let you see Africa’s epic wildlife at its best – up close and personal. The tour does incorporate some walking safaris that require some level of fitness.

From there you’ll cross into Zimbabwe where you’ll get a firsthand look at spectacular Victoria Falls. While you’re here you’ll have a guided tour of the famous Falls, as well as a lovely sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.

This is definitely our pick for the best African safari for seniors. It’s the trip of a lifetime!

The 8-Days Best of Kenya Safari Tour – Big 5 Migration Safari includes :

  • a multi-lingual tour guide

This tour of Kenya isn’t private, but has a limit of only 6 participants. This is great if you enjoy getting to know travellers from all over the world, but don’t want to be overwhelmed by a large group.

Your adventure starts and ends in Nairobi, with pickup and dropoff at the airport or your hotel.

You have the opportunity to see some of the best wildlife destinations in East Africa. Your stops include Amboseli National Park, Tsavo East and West, and beautiful Lake Nakuru.

Amboseli is famous for its great elephant herds and for the stunning view of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our Kenyan safari dream turned into reality! You have those dreams that you want to fulfill… This is the right place for your kenyan dream…. Simon and team are way way beyond any other tour operators i have ever met… – Tripadvisor company review (read more reviews )

Tsavo, both East and West, will give you a more wild experience. The brush is heavier than it is in Amboseli and feels much more ‘untamed’ when on a game drive.

You’ll also be treated to a visit to the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. This is where the northern portion of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration takes place.

The migration happens in an ongoing trickle of animal movement throughout the year. But if you time your trip right, you could get to see the pinnacle of this amazing spectacle.

Try to aim for late July through early September, or late October to early November to catch the dramatic river crossings. The order of your stops can be adjusted to catch the crossings or to suit your preference.

During your trip, you’ll be able to experience unlimited wildlife viewing. Game drives will take place in an open-topped safari vehicle.

And your accommodations will be inside the parks you will be visiting. This way you’ll be able to keep a lookout for wildlife even when you’re not on a game drive.

✰ Or if you only have a few hours :

I am very satisfied with the journey that was booked after the plane landed in Tanzania! The price is favorable and the quality is good! My hotel is very nice! Clean and beautiful! – translated from chinese ( see original )

A day with the Tanzania Cultural Tourism Programme is fascinating and will give you the chance to tour native tribal areas . Plus you’ll get to meet the people and get a glimpse of their traditional way of life.

More Seniors Than Ever Are Enjoying Safaris

The magic of the African wilderness is drawing an increasing number of senior adventurers each year. African safaris are becoming a popular choice among older travellers. This reflects a shift from more traditional vacation options like cruises and Florida resort stays.

This surge in popularity is not just about the unique experience that a safari offers. It’s also due to the growing awareness of safari’s accessibility to seniors of various fitness levels.

Unlike many other adventure travels or even the structured nature of cruises, safaris can be tailored to you. A safari can be made to accommodate the physical capabilities and comfort levels of older participants.

There are options ranging from luxury lodges and gentle game drives to the slightly more adventurous. Even mobile camps can have comfortable beds!

You can immerse yourself in nature without the need for “roughing it” or strenuous physical activity.

The appeal of African safaris to this demographic goes beyond just the physical accessibility. Seniors finally have the time to tackle that bucket list!

An African safari is the trip of a lifetime, and can offer much more than many other conventional senior vacation options.

The iconic wildlife, spectacular landscapes, and fascinating cultural experiences – it’s hard to top a safari!

The Leading Destinations for Seniors’ African Safaris

🇧🇼 Botswana

Botswana is an exceptional safari destination for senior citizens. It combines breathtaking natural beauty and a high degree of accessibility with a commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism.

It’s home to a variety of ecosystems, from the waterways of the Okavango Delta to the vast Central Kalahari. You’ll find a wide range of gentle yet thrilling adventures, suited even to those with health and mobility considerations.

Here’s how Botswana caters to seniors on safari:

➦ Okavango Delta :

The Okavango Delta is a mesmerizing inland delta known for its waterways, landscapes, and iconic wildlife.

For seniors, the delta offers a unique opportunity for mokoro (traditional canoe) excursions. These allow for a relaxed exploration of its intricate channels and lagoons.

These guided trips are ideal for those with mobility issues. They require minimal physical effort and let you get up close to the Delta’s amazing fauna and flora.

Lodges and tented camps in the delta prioritize comfort and accessibility. Many have private decks, swimming pools, and spa facilities for a restful and rejuvenating stay.

➦ Central Kalahari Game Reserve:

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a real contrasting safari experience to the Delta. It has expansive desert landscapes and remarkable wildlife adapted to arid conditions.

Game drives in specially equipped vehicles allow seniors to see it all comfortably. You can witness the spectacular beauty of the Kalahari’s open spaces and its inhabitants, such as the iconic black-maned lions, without the need for strenuous physical activity.

➦ Chobe National Park:

Chobe National Park is famous for its large herds of elephants and its rich diversity of wildlife. The park’s river cruises are a leisurely and accessible way to experience the natural beauty and animal life.

They also let you sit comfortably while watching the animals along the riverbanks.

Many of the lodges and safari camps in Chobe are equipped to cater to the needs of seniors. They have ground-level rooms and walk-in showers, some with wheelchair access.

Best Time for an African Safari

The best time to travel to Africa for a safari depends somewhat on where you’re going. In general, though, the months of June through October are your best bet.

This is the dry season, which tends to be when the best wildlife sightings happen. The foliage is sparse and the grass is short, giving the animals less to hide behind.

There are fewer watering holes, too, during the dry season. This makes the animals’ movements more predictable.

All the wildlife in an area has to drink. With fewer spots for it, you can be sure to have some great sightings at the existing watering holes.

But really, you’ll have an amazing time on safari at any time of year.

Keep in mind that the summer might be too hot for your liking. Summer falls roughly from November to March in the southern hemisphere.

This tends to be the rainy season, though it won’t rain torrents every day. But trees will be fuller and more leafy and grass will be taller, giving animals more cover.

Plus there will be more spots for wildlife to go for water, so their movements become less predictable.

But honestly, any time of year is great for safari. I like to travel during shoulder or off-seasons. Fewer people and fewer safari vehicles are competing for sightings.

I’ve never been disappointed. Africa is always stunning.

Is Africa Safe for Travelers?

When it comes to travelling, safety is an important topic. This is especially true for destinations like Africa, a continent often shrouded in misconceptions and stereotypes.

The short answer is, Africa can be a safe travel destination with the right preparation and awareness. Each country has its own unique set of circumstances.

The key to a safe trip lies in doing your research, taking necessary precautions, and approaching your journey with respect and openness.

➤ Diverse Experiences, Diverse Safety Profiles: Safety conditions vary widely across Africa’s 54 countries. Some areas are remarkably safe for tourists, while others may have advisories due to political instability or health concerns.

Research the specific country you plan to visit. Countries like Botswana, Namibia, and Ghana are known for their stable governments and friendly attitude towards tourists.

➤ Common Precautions: As with any travel destination, basic safety precautions are necessary. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.

Use reputable transportation services, and keep copies of important documents like passports and visas in a safe place. Emailing them to yourself is ideal.

Avoid travel to areas known for higher risks of crime or political unrest.

➤ Health Safety: Health is another essential aspect to consider. Some African countries require vaccinations like Yellow Fever, and it’s wise to take precautions against malaria in certain regions.

Access to quality healthcare can vary, so travel insurance with medical coverage is highly recommended.

➤ Cultural Sensitivity and Respect: Understanding local customs and laws is essential. Some behaviours that are acceptable at home might be frowned upon or even illegal in parts of Africa. For example, camo-coloured clothing is illegal in some countries.

A respectful attitude towards local customs goes a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable trip.

➤ Engage with Local Knowledge: Locals often provide the best insights about safe areas to visit, times to travel, and places to eat. Engaging with the local community not only enhances your travel experience but also contributes to your safety.

Check Travel Advisories: Always consult your country’s travel advisories before planning your trip. These advisories provide up-to-date information about safety, health risks, and any travel warnings.

African Safaris for Seniors: FAQs

Pink and yellow Chobe sunset over an elephant walking through the sunset's refection on the water.

Q: Is 70 too old to go on safari?

Absolutely not! Age is just a number, and going on safari at 70 is proof of that. With the right preparation and precautions, anyone can experience the thrill of a safari adventure.

Plus, with the benefit of age comes a wealth of knowledge and perspective, making the experience all the more meaningful.

Q: What is the best age for an African safari?

There’s no perfect age to go on safari, as long as you are reasonably healthy and check excursion age restrictions. Get the okay from your family doctor if you have health issues, then buy that ticket!

Young or old, anyone can experience the excitement of a safari. There are safaris suitable for most anyone, like those above. The years bring a wealth of knowledge and perspective, making the experience all the more meaningful.

Q: As a single senior, will I have the chance to make friends on safari?

Absolutely! A safari is the perfect place to meet people from around the world who share your interest in travel and adventure. Unless you choose to take a private safari, of course, in which case you would travel on your own with your guides 😉.

Q: How fit do I need to be as a senior planning a safari?

As a senior planning an safari, you don’t need to be extremely fit. Most safari activities, like game drives, are accessible and require minimal physical exertion. Safaris can be customized to your mobility and fitness levels, ensuring you can enjoy the wildlife and landscapes comfortably.

Q: What do I need to do as a senior when planning a safari?

The most important things you can do before you leave home is to visit your healthcare provider. Together you’ll determine if you need any vaccinations for your trip and discuss malaria prevention. It’s also essential that you arrange for travel insurance for your trip.

Q: Which African country has the best safari?

Choosing the best African country for a safari depends on what you want to see and experience. However, some popular destinations for safaris include the East African countries of Tanzania and Kenya. They tend to offer a more “wild” experience.

Botswana’s Chobe and Moremi Game Reserve, and South Africa safaris for seniors are incredible as well. You’ll find less wild and more comfort. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what type of safari you are looking for. The safaris above cover a range of locations – find the one that’s best for you!

Q: Are there any luxury safaris available for seniors?

There are many options for going on safari in comfort and style. One of your best options is Go2Africa, a safari company that can customize a safari especially for you. They are experts at senior travel. Choose your destinations, with their help, and your comfort level, and they will make it happen!

Q: Which is the safest African safari tour?

The safety of its guests is the highest priority for all safari companies. The guides are trained to keep you safe, and they are intimately familiar with the areas they take you to.

However, if you’re looking for the very safest African safari tour, consider a safari within South Africa’s  Kruger National Park . Kruger offers a well-established infrastructure and experienced guides.

It’s a 19,485 km park with more than enough wildlife and landscapes to keep you enthralled.

Additionally, the park has a low incidence of malaria. This makes it a great choice for anyone who’s a bit nervous about health issues.

Consider this 5-star, 5-day tour of Kruger Park . Your guide will pick you up from several locations in and around Johannesburg, as well as from Kruger’s own international airport.

Q: What kind of accommodations are available for seniors on safari?

Seniors on safari have various accommodation options designed for comfort, accessibility, and an immersive experience. These include:

Lodges: The height of comfort, with amenities like en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, fine dining, and often spa facilities. These lodges are designed for ease of mobility and often have stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.

Tented Camps: Blend comfort with the authentic safari atmosphere. Tented camps provide spacious and safe accommodations. They often have en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, and sometimes even private decks. Many are designed to be accessible, ensuring that you can enjoy the safari experience without concern for your comfort or mobility.

Boutique Hotels: In or near safari areas, boutique hotels offer a unique and personalized lodging experience. They combine local charm with comfort, including accessible options for those with limited mobility.

Eco-Lodges: For environmentally conscious seniors, eco-lodges offer sustainable accommodation options without compromising on comfort. They let you revel in being close to nature alongside modern conveniences.

On a safari tour like the ones above, you’ll enjoy one or more of these styles of accommodations.

Q: What to Pack for My Safari?

No special “safari clothing” is necessary ! Dress to be comfortable, keeping in mind that winter temperatures can be quite cool in the early mornings and late evenings

And don’t forget that South Africa is in the southern hemisphere. Their winter is at the same time as summer in the northern hemisphere.

✓ Mosquitoes are drawn to dark and bright colours . You also want to blend into the background when on a game drive. Neutrals like tan, khaki, brown and grey are great.

✓ Camo-coloured clothing can get you in trouble. It’s even illegal in some countries. Best to leave it at home.

✓ If it will be summer, take a long, light scarf or bandana that you can wet down and wrap around your neck. You’ll be amazed at how this will help you stay cool.

✓ Bring layers that you can don and doff as needed, including a warm sweater or fleece. ✓ Gloves and a knit cap are good ideas, too. ✓ sturdy shoes, and lighter ones for relaxing in the lodge ✓ bug repellent and sun protection! ✓ a hat and sunglasses ✓ a headlamp and flashlight ✓ all necessary toiletries and medications Find everything you need to know to pack for your trip in What to Pack for Africa: An Epic Guide . And plan your trip step-by-step, too.

However, the passenger trains in South Africa are relatively slow, so perhaps avoid relying on them as a transport option.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, Environment & Weather

South Africa sits at the southern end of the continent of Africa and covers 1,220,813 square kilometres. South Africa has more than 290 conservation parks, and is home to nearly 300 mammal species, 860 bird species and 8,000 plant species. Physical features vary across the country, from the deserts in the west, to the highveld in the centre, and the coastal plain of the north east.

Much of the country is semi-arid and dry. While temperatures can drop below freezing in areas of high altitude, most of the country only experiences mild cool temperatures in the winter months. Temperatures can be quite high during the summer, so be sure to prepare accordingly.

World Heritage sites

South Africa has 10 listed UNESCO World Heritage sites. You can view the official list here: https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/za. Some notable sites include:

  • Robben Island, the former maximum security prison of political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela
  • iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which is made up of around 3,280 square kilometres and home to a diverse array of South African wildlife
  • Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains, which comprise 40% of the Baberton Greenstone Belt, one of the world’s oldest geological structures.

Festivals and Events

South Africa holds numerous colourful festivals and events throughout the year. The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival brings together 100,00 art lovers for a week of dancing, music, cabaret, poetry and films, and features over 200 shows across 8 days. The Cape Town Minstrels Carnival is Cape Town’s showpiece celebration for the New Year, with numerous costumed parades and competitions taking place across the city. The Joy of Jazz festival in Johannesburg is one the biggest jazz festivals in the country, and is not to be missed by any music lovers.

Eating and Drinking

Meat is an important part of the South African diet, with notable dishes including Boerewors (thick beef sausages), biltong (dried and spiced meat), and potjiekos (a stew made out of meat and mixed vegetables). One of South Africa’s most notable social traditions is to gather round for a braai, or barbecued meat. A communal way of having food, braai simply involves cooking meat on an open grill and sharing food with friends and family. South Africa’s multicultural influences shines through in dishes such as Cape Malay curry, and Bunny chow. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, try a malva pudding or a milk tart. Beer is the ocuntry’s unofficial national drink, while many fine wines are produced in the country. For something non-alcoholic, why not try rooibos (redbush tea) or mageu.

Health and Safety

In regional rural areas travel remains a positive experience for the tourist.

As of writing, smartraveller.gov.au advises a high degree of caution when travelling to South Africa particularly in the major metros. Crime is a significant problem in Urban South Africa, so pay attention to your personal security at all times.

Electrical supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The standard voltage in South Africa is 230V, while the standard frequency is 50 Hz. South Africa uses the Type M electric plug, which has 3 pins in a T-shape. Be sure to have the right adapter with you before you travel.

Tour Reviews

The Victoria Falls were an outstanding treat.

Participant -16

Without exception the hotels were of high standard. They were comfortable and clean and had plenty of hot water. Any problem that I had, such as not having the right electrical adapter, was solved quickly and pleasantly.

Participant -17

All the guides were good, but I thought Daryl in Pretoria and Johannesburg was excellent. His knowledge of South African history and his passion for his country was impressive. He took us to see places that were important in that history. He does tend to talk too much and run out of time, but he was always worth listening to.

Exceeded Expectations

The drumming experience and the cultural food at the Gold restaurant in Cape Town was fantastic

THE TRIP WAS FANTASTIC.

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. Tipping is generally practiced in the restaurants of larger cities, and is customarily done at 10% of the total bill. Hotel staff, tour guides, and coach drivers may also accept tips, as might car park and petrol station attendants.

Responsible travel tips for South Africa

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of South African Rand in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.
  • Respect the local people and the wildlife! Be considerate and ask local people if they are OK with having their photos taken, be polite and courteous.

Old Arbat District: the Art Quarter

Holidays are bright and colourful, we all love them because they form a ray of light amongst the grey monotony of the daily grind. Arbat is a real street-holiday, where it is always noisy and fun: people meet, walk, watch the performances of talented street artists with clowns, singers and dancers strutting their stuff. Right on the pavement, artists proudly exhibit their works.

There is a very special atmosphere here that has long attracted representatives of the creative intelligentsia. L. Tolstoy and S. Yesenin, A. Pushkin and his young wife N. Goncharov, A. Blok and B. Pasternak are fondly remembered by the hallowed paving stones along Arbat. It is of no surprise that the heroes of the famous novel ‘War and Peace’ were ‘registered’.

We would like to invite you to take a walk with us along the historic Old Arbat! We will talk about the history and architecture of the most romantic street in Moscow.

  • You will hear a lot of interesting facts about the grand houses that were located here and their wealthy residents.
  • You will learn how a once inexpensive inn for carriage drivers has since turned into one of the best restaurants in the capital!
  • You will see the famous house where A. Pushkin and N. Goncharova spent their honeymoon and stand at the wall dedicated to the memory of post punk/new wave icon Viktor
  • You will be carried away down the beautiful side streets such as: Bolshaya Afanasyevsky, Nikolopeskovsky, Filippovsky, Krivoarbatsky. In a bygone era, these streets were part of Arbat and were bustling with its spirit.

B.Okudzhava dedicated some of his lyrical poems to Arbat, his favourite street from childhood. A. Rybakov, author of the famous novel ‘Children of the Arbat’ also lived here. There is also a little corner of Bulgakov's Moscow on Arbat - the former Torgsin store (now the ‘The Seventh Continent’), where the novel ‘The Master and Margarita’ unfolded.

Every house on Arbat is a piece of history, and we will dive into this history head first.

Title: Ghana: Africa Is People

Course Information AFSP 2205 + 2207 3+1 Credit

Eligibility:

First-Years, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors

The course and trip have no prerequisites, but background in African studies is a plus. We are seeking students with serious interest in Africa, prepared to do demanding study and fieldwork in Ghana during Spring Break.

March 1, 2025 to March 9, 2025

Description:

What is Africa to you? How should Africa be written? How should Africa not be written? These fundamental questions are among other crucial questions informing the direction of this class, where the world’s second largest continent, Africa — humankind’s cradle — will be at the center of our discussions. We will contend with the historical representations of Africa, its peoples, societies and cultures, and what it means to imagine Africa in the contemporary moment. In doing so, we will not just leave at the representation of Africa as a geographic tragedy but as a complex space that has long teemed with a “human vibrancy” that enabled the peopling of the world.

We will conduct a field visit to Ghana to familiarize ourselves with the sociocultural and political economic environments of the country. It is hoped that the visit will allow students to use Ghana as a pinhole through which to fathom the myriad afterlives of slavery and colonization in postcolonial Ghana. Specifically, the visit will offer students the opportunity to engage with the sights, smells, sounds, and tastes of Ghana through the experiences of Ghanaians themselves. Primarily, we are interested in affording students the chance to understand how Ghanaians/Africans imagine and interact with the complex sociocultural environments resulting from the historical legacies of slavery and colonization. It is hoped that these engagements will serve as gateways for students to not only study Ghana but to also learn from Ghanaians writ large. This taste of Ghana would offer them a renewed critical understanding of the African continent.
