Air france to resume beirut flights as lufthansa, ryanair extend suspensions, the escalating conflict between israel and iran has international airlines suspending flights to cities across the middle east..

Air France plans to resume flights to Beirut on Thursday while other international airlines are still avoiding specific regional routes due to increased military tension between Israel and Iran .

Air France said on Wednesday that it will resume service between the Lebanese capital and Paris subject to conditions on the ground.

“At this stage, and subject to the evolution of the security situation at destination, the airline plans to resume its flights between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Beirut on Thursday, August 15, 2024,” the airline said, as reported by Agence France-Presse.

Air France’s Netherlands-based subsidiary Transavia will resume flights to Lebanon the same day, according to the outlet.

On Monday, Lufthansa said it had extended its suspension of flights to Beirut, Tel Aviv, Tehran, Amman and Erbil until Aug. 21. Ryanair announced the same day that it extended its suspension of Tel Aviv flights to Aug. 26.

Last week, Air India announced that it had suspended flights to Tel Aviv until further notice, while Delta Airlines said it extended its suspension through Aug. 31.

Reuters reported earlier this month that Singapore Airlines has stopped flying over Iranian airspace. United Airlines announced last week that it has suspended Tel Aviv flights for the foreseeable future.

Greece’s Aegean Airlines has canceled flights to Beirut, Amman and Tel Aviv until Aug. 19, according to Reuters.

Why it matters: International airlines have canceled flights to Lebanon, Israel, Iran and other parts of the Middle East in recent weeks due to the developing conflict in the region. Iran is widely expected to conduct an attack on Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, and Hezbollah has vowed to strike Israel after the killing of its senior military leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut a day earlier.

Israel confirmed responsibility for the killing of Shukr but has not commented on Haniyeh’s death. Hamas said the leader was killed by Israel.

Know more: The Biden administration has dispatched senior officials to the Middle East this week in an effort to get Israel and Hamas to agree to a cease-fire and prevent an all-out war in the region.

Cease-fire talks in Doha are set to resume on Thursday.

With Wildfires Near Athens, Here's What Travelers to Greece Should Know

Image may contain Architecture Building Temple Prayer Shrine Pillar Parthenon and Person

Dangerous wildfires near Athens, Greece forced thousands of residents to evacuate the suburbs north of the country's capital on Monday, August 12. The event was reported to be the worst blaze the Mediterranean country has seen so far this year, burning 40 square miles of land (nearly twice the size of Manhattan), killing a local factory worker, damaging 22 businesses, and leaving at least 78 homes uninhabitable, the Associated Press reports .

As of Wednesday, August 15, there are no active fires in the wider Athens region, Greece's chief fire brigade spokesperson told the BBC. However, residual flare ups still remain a risk.

The fires were first reported raging through the forests north of Athens on August 10. A weekend of consistently high temperatures and strong winds had led to a continuous escalation of the situation. It's the latest of a summer marked by extreme temperatures and earlier heatwaves in Greece . In July, wildfires also burned on the Greek islands of Kos, in the Dodecanese islands, and across Chios and Crete .

Understandably, the recent news has led travelers to wonder if they should postpone trips to Athens and elsewhere in Greece. “The air quality is not great for people with respiratory issues, but otherwise, I would see no reason to stay away from Athens right now,” Athens-based Jacoline Vinke , a Condé Nast Traveler travel specialist and trip planner at Trufflepig said Monday. "The fires are not in a touristic area; flights are not affected and there has been no personal danger for anyone. That said, it is a dramatic and frightening situation for the local people.”

Below, see answers to travelers' frequently asked questions concerning the wildfires with insight from local travel experts.

What's causing the wildfires near Athens, Greece?

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the wildfire; a faulty power cable may have started the blaze, sources told Reuters , but that has yet to be confirmed.

Gale-force winds of around 31 mph in some areas north of the Greek capital, plus several days of extreme temperatures approaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit, meant emergency services worked tirelessly to extinguish the blazes.

“The strong wind is the main problem in the affected areas,” Vinke said on Monday. “Tonight and tomorrow it will be slightly better so hopefully that will help getting the situation under control.”

The wildfire prompted evacuation orders in the suburbs north of Athens on Monday, August 12.

Is it safe to travel to Athens?

The Greek authorities have not announced a state of emergency in Athens. On August 12, the US Embassy in Greece issued a Natural Disaster Alert advising US citizens to “exercise extreme caution” in areas impacted by the wildfires.

“The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has announced Very High Fire Risk (Risk Category 4) and Extreme Fire Risk (Risk Category 5) for many areas in Greece, including areas close to Athens, which can be seen on the Daily Fire Risk Map . This high risk of fire is expected to continue in the coming days,” the alert says. “US citizens living in or traveling near any of the affected areas should follow instructions from local authorities and closely monitor the local media and emergency alerts.”

The good news for travelers is that there are currently no fires in areas that are frequented by tourists on the mainland or on the Greek Islands , Vinke told Traveler on Monday.

“Given the heat in Athens and the air quality, I would suggest to anyone visiting the capital to adjust their pace, avoid going for long walks especially in the middle of the day, and perhaps visit a museum rather than climbing up Filopappou Hill or running in the old Olympic stadium," she said. "The conditions in Athens are not ideal for a long stay, but that holds for August in general. The islands, in contrast, are lovely and breezy right now, wonderful for enjoying holidays without having to deal with the unbearable heat large parts of southern Europe suffer this time of year.”

"In short, I see no reason for anyone who has booked holidays in Greece to change plans, and indeed, coming for holidays as planned is also the best way to help [local residents and businesses]” Vinke said.

Which airlines have canceled flights to Athens?

As of Thursday August 15, airlines have not altered their flight schedule or canceled flights to or from Athens due to the wildfires. “The main concern is if the fires get any closer to Athens, flights will be affected. The airport is north of Athens and the fires are north of Athens,” Ronnie Liadis , a Condé Nast Traveler travel specialist with an expertise in Greece, said on Monday.

“Several airlines operate directly into the islands and Athens can be avoided,” she said. “Airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Aegean, and SkyExpress operate direct flights from several cities in Europe such as Frankfurt, Paris, and London. This is an option for travelers who are flying to Mykonos, Crete, Santorini and Corfu. ”

As for transit around Greece, the coast guard has redirected all ferries from the Rafina port in Athens to Laviro, a port located further south, Athens-based travel blogger and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Rebecca Hall told Traveler.

This is a developing news story and will be updated with more information. A version of this article was originally published on Condé Nast Traveller UK.

Ethiopian Airlines eyes 2029 opening for new hub as plans take shape

By Graham Dunn 2024-08-12T13:20:00+01:00

Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed an advisory and consultancy contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants covering plans for a new 110 million-passenger airport located around 25 miles (40km) southeast of its existing Addis Ababa Bole hub.

Ethiopia has for several years flagged the need for a hub with more capacity as part of its long-term development plans – included in the Ethiopian Airlines Vision 2035 strategy – and the Star Alliance carrier has previously identified a site at Abusera in Bishoftu for the facility.

Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed a technical advisory and consultancy agreement with Dar Al-Handasah covering the new 110 million-passenger airport

The airline has now announced plans for the new airport to open in 2029, initially with a passenger capacity of 60 million – double that of the existing Bole hub – after disclosing it has signed a deal with Dar Al-Handasah to ”embark on the design and supervision of a Mega Airport City at Abusera” in Bishoftu, to the southeast of the capital.

Ethiopian Airlines Group chief executive Mesfin Tasew says: “The project will not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic growth and prioritise environmentally responsible practices in our country and beyond.

”With its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, this new airport promises to elevate African aviation and strengthen partnerships, marking a significant advancement for the region’s air travel infrastructure.”

While initially opening with a capacity of 60 million passengers, plans are in place for the airport to be expanded to handle 110 million passengers annually – making it the largest hub in Africa.

Notably, the new airport would be sited at a lower elevation compared to the existing Addis Ababa hub, which presents additional operational challenges.

Trial by Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and NZ aims to shorten travel time on 38 flight routes

Schools in singapore impose phone bans to reduce distractions, rekindle social interaction, new special economic zone may help stem exodus of malaysians seeking work in singapore, says johor mb.

SINGAPORE: Travellers on selected flights between Singapore and at least nine cities in Australia and New Zealand may benefit from shorter flight times, under a three-month trial to test a different way of routing international flights that also includes Indonesia.

Traditionally, to get from one point to another, aircraft use a fixed network of airways, which are like invisible highways in the sky, and they are required to follow prescribed routes through this network.

However, since Aug 5, pilots on selected flight routes have been given the flexibility to choose the most direct and efficient paths across the airspaces of the four countries involved.

This air traffic management concept is called user-preferred routing, and the hope is that aircraft will be able to make better use of airspace, cutting travel time, fuel burn and carbon emissions, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on Aug 15.

The trial is being conducted on 38 flight routes operated by national flag carriers Singapore Airlines (SIA), Garuda, Qantas and Air New Zealand.

The routes include those from Singapore to Auckland, Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Christchurch, Darwin, Melbourne and Perth, as well as the Sydney to Singapore route.

User-preferred routing has been trialled as far back as 2008 and the practice already exists in places like Australia. But its use on international routes has been limited due to the complexity of coordinating routes across international airspace boundaries.

CAAS said airlines can potentially save up to 1,700kg of fuel for a flight between Singapore and Melbourne, and cut more than 1,960 tonnes of carbon emissions for a year of daily flights on that route.

This is in line with Singapore’s longer-term plans to achieve net-zero emissions from its airports and carriers by 2050.

Singapore Institute of Technology Assistant Professor Awad Khireldin, who teaches air transport management, said the cost savings for airlines from user-preferred routing could help stabilise ticket prices over time, especially in the face of rising fuel prices.

But it may not lead to immediate fare reductions, he noted.

SIA said 15 of its flights are part of the trial, and the airline will explore the feasibility of adding more flight routes to it.

“SIA expects to achieve time and fuel savings when wind conditions are favourable on these routes. This will potentially enhance our customers’ convenience when they fly with us, and reduce SIA’s emissions.”

In an Aug 6 statement, Qantas group chief risk officer Andrew Monaghan said user-preferred routing will allow the airline to tailor individual flight routes and simplify flight planning processes while delivering the same level of safety.

Captain Hugh Pearce, Air New Zealand’s head of flight operations, said the airline has one route in the trial, which is the Singapore-Auckland route.

But even before this, the carrier had already been using partial user-preferred routing through Indonesian and Australian airspace for some time. “We are a strong advocate,” he added.

CAAS said on Aug 15 that the user-preferred routing trial is a key initiative in a larger project to implement free route operations in South-East Asia and Oceania.

Free routing allows airspace users to plan optimal flight paths, taking into account airline preferences, weather and other factors such as airspace restrictions.

The trial comes after a collaboration agreement that CAAS signed in October 2023 with its air traffic management counterparts from Indonesia and New Zealand. Airservices Australia, which manages the country’s airspace, joined later.

The other signatories are the International Air Transport Association (Iata), the industry body for airlines, and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation, which represents air traffic control providers.

CAAS said the parties will review the results of the trial after three months and, subject to feedback, look towards expanding it to more cities and airlines.

Iata’s interim regional vice-president for North Asia and the Asia-Pacific, Dr Xie Xingquan, said the incremental improvements for individual flights will generate significant cumulative benefits, given the number of flights and cities involved in the trial.

Airservices Australia interim chief executive Rob Sharp said: “As an industry, we need to develop and implement innovative practices to ensure we have an efficient and sustainable aviation sector.”

Jamie Bloomfield, director of Singapore-based consultancy Propelo Aviation, said the benefits of user-preferred routing may be limited for shorter flights, such as those from Singapore to Indonesia.

“What’s good about the trial is that it is collaborative across multiple parties, which allows user-preferred routing to be trialled over longer distances,” he said.

Besides shorter flights and better resource management, user-preferred routing can, in theory, also enhance resilience during disruptions by allowing airlines to prioritise some flights over others, he added.

For pilots, the changes are mostly at the flight planning stage, Bloomfield said.

However, for air traffic controllers, a blank canvas, instead of a structured network, increases complexity, which means new system capabilities will be needed in the long term, he added.

Bloomfield said user-preferred routing is also a stepping stone towards the even more flexible concept of trajectory-based operations, where an aircraft’s journey from take-off to touchdown is strategically planned across different flight regions.

On the impact on fares, he said it is ultimately down to whether airlines pass on any savings. “The greater benefits come from the potential to reduce the environmental impact of flights. User-preferred routing also has the potential to reduce the severity of delays,” he added. - The Straits Times/ANN
