The Best Things To Do In Beautiful Petoskey, Michigan, Plus Where To Eat And Stay

  • United States

Petoskey sits in the northwest area of Michigan’s lower peninsula on Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay. The charming Victorian-era town, slightly more than a 4-hour drive from Detroit, is reminiscent of a bygone era. If you want to disconnect and relax, beautiful Petoskey is the place to do it. Here are some of our favorite things to do, sips to sample, foods to experience, and places to stay.

Things To Do In Petoskey

While Petoskey has activities like cross-country skiing in winter, morel mushroom foraging in spring, and fall harvest, we think the best time to visit Petoskey is in the summer with its beach fun and associated water sports. Petoskey, known for Petoskey stones, Ernest Hemingway, and art, is the perfect getaway for rockhounds as well as literary and art enthusiasts.

Hunt For Petoskey Stones

The Petoskey stone, Michigan’s state stone, is fossilized coral. Two places where the stones are plentiful are Magnus Park and Petoskey State Park.

With 1,000 feet of rocky shoreline , Magnus Park is the best place to find Michigan’s sought-after state stone. Petoskey State Park’s beach is sandier, but the stones are still easy to find. Since the stones are easiest to spot when they’re wet, bring a spray water bottle to wet stones in dry areas.

Spend Some Time At Petoskey State Park

While the beautiful 303-acre Petoskey State Park , located on the north end of Little Traverse Bay, is one of the best beaches to search for Petoskey stones, it offers many other activities, like swimming, metal detecting, and cross-country skiing. The Old Baldy Trail is a half-mile loop to the top of Old Baldy dune, prized for its scenic views if you enjoy hiking. A slightly longer hike, the Portage Trail is a mile out-and-back trail through a wooded dune area.

While you won’t find boat launches in Petoskey State Park, both Petoskey and nearby Harbor Springs have them.

Explore Hemingway’s Haunts

From when Ernest Hemingway was an infant until age 22, he spent his summers in Walloon Lake and Horton Bay, near Petoskey. He missed one year, and that was the year he spent in Italy during World War I. Some of the Nobel Prize winner’s haunts were the Noggin Room in the Perry Hotel, now Stafford’s Perry Hotel. Wanting to escape his parents and do some serious writing, he stayed at Eva Potter’s rooming house. In 1921, Ernest married his first wife, Elizabeth Hadley Richardson, in Horton Bay. Take a self-guided tour using the guide found here .

Hemingway’s first published fiction, written in Paris, is a group of short stories referred to as The Nick Adams Stories. These stories feature a variety of places around Petoskey and Walloon Lake. A statue of the young Hemingway stands in Petoskey’s Pennsylvania Park .

Petoskey Yesterday offers two tours featuring Hemingway. Hemingway’s Petoskey is a 90-minute tour covering places that he and his family would have known. They also discuss how Petoskey inspired his first novel. This 1-mile walking tour has gentle hills. A second 2-hour tour requires transportation as it goes to Horton Bay and Walloon Lake. These places are part of Hemingway’s stories, and the guide explains how Hemingway’s personal experiences inspired them.

Visit The Little Traverse Historical Museum

Located in the restored Pere Marquette train depot, the Little Traverse Historical Museum opens seasonally. Exhibits include displays depicting the Little Traverse Bay region’s history, including the Odawa Indians, where the museum has some of their rare artifacts. Some exhibits provide more detail on Ernest Hemingway’s life in Michigan.

Morel mushrooms in Michigan.

Forage For Morel Mushrooms

Mid-May to mid-June is a popular time with foodies foraging for morel mushrooms , a popular pastime with Michiganders. Morels have an earthy, somewhat meaty taste. Local restaurants also feature these delicacies on their spring menus.

Tour Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen

The first thing we noticed when we walked through the door was the smell of melted chocolate transforming to fudge. It reminded me of grandma’s kitchen at Christmas. Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen offers a multi-sensory experience that includes more than just chocolate. The aroma of freshly made waffle cones made us order some as our afternoon snack. Hearing the paddle mix in the copper pot made us anticipate the brittle. We watched as they made caramel apples. Of course, you’ll have to sample some of their treats. Kilwins provides guided tours of their facility regularly throughout the day.

The Petoskey Wine Region grows robust grapes that grow well in cold temperatures. Located on 30 acres of hilly country, Mackinaw Trail Winery and Brewery produces 15 acres of grapes, and this family-owned winery and brewery includes a bistro. The Petoskey area Wine and Brew Guide outlines the complete trail.

Best Restaurants In Petoskey

In summer and early fall, local area restaurants offer a bounty of the harvest. You’ll find dishes made from local ingredients, like cherries and whitefish caught in the Great Lakes. Breweries make craft brews from locally grown hops, and vineyards feature wine from estate-grown grapes.

Chandler’s Restaurant

Located in the Gaslight District, Chandler’s Restaurant features three dining areas, so you’ll have the perfect setting, no matter your mood. In the summer months, you’ll enjoy their patio. Inside, you’ll find the Symon’s wine cellar’s intimate space or the main dining room featuring a full bar.

The upscale menu features seasonal ingredients and local fare. For example, they feature dishes with Michigan apples throughout their menu in the fall, both in main dishes and desserts. You may find a duck breast with roasted apples and an apple cider gastric, a cider-braised pork entree, or a warm apple crisp. In any case, the meals are fresh and seasonal.

Duffy’s Garage And Grille

Located in downtown Petoskey on Lake Street, Duffy’s Garage and Grille has two decks overlooking Little Traverse Bay, making for a beautiful place to have a casual dinner on a summer evening. Though the views are stunning, the inside is a fun spot for car lovers, where the unique decor features old car parts, front and rear ends, hoods, camshafts, and hubcaps suspended from the walls. You’ll even find spark plug chandeliers. How fun!

We enjoy the pizza as it has ample amounts of cheese. However, they’re also known for their gourmet burgers and grinders. The French onion soup served in a bread bowl is also a comforting warm dish on a crisp fall evening.

City Park Grill

City Park Grill , built in 1875, was initially a male-only billiard hall called McCarty Hall. Today City Park Grill serves everything from hamburgers to filet mignon. You can also enjoy a catch from the Great Lakes, with their whitefish and walleye.

City Park Grill teaches a bit of literary history with your meal as Ernest Hemingway drafted some of his Nick Adams stories at the bar.

Where To Shop In Petoskey

The Gaslight District has been Petoskey’s shopping area for more than 100 years . The historic gas lights illuminate downtown Petoskey by night, adding to its Victorian charm. In summer, a complimentary old-fashioned trolley continues the Victorian theme downtown. The Gaslight District covers three streets and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In addition to locally owned shops and boutiques, you’ll find galleries and restaurants. It’s fun to take a break along these streets and enjoy the view of Little Traverse Bay. If your hunt for Petoskey stones wasn’t fruitful or you want a polished stone that shows off the pattern, check out Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts . If you’d like to try your hand at polishing your own Petoskey stone, stop by NorthGoods , to purchase a polishing kit.

Best Hotels In Petoskey

In Petoskey proper, the best places to stay are local inns and hotels. If you prefer to sleep under the stars, camping in Michigan’s Petoskey State Park is a great overnight option.

Stafford’s Bay View Inn

Located two miles south of the Gaslight District, Stafford’s Bay View Inn , built in 1886, offers some rooms with Little Traverse Bay views. The inn features two wheelchair-accessible guest rooms that include walk-in showers. The inn doesn’t allow pets.

The inn has on-site dining in the Roselawn Dining Room, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The hotel offers two on-site dining options. The H.O. Rose Dining Room features bay views and a hot breakfast while the Noggin Room Pub offers pizza and other pub-style meals.

Historic Gaslight District in downtown Petoskey

The Historic Gaslight District of downtown Petoskey is one of its most beautiful assets. The century-old historic district is like stepping back in time, but with a decidedly 21st-century edge.

The historic building facades and streets harken back to a golden age of small town Midwest, peppered with parks, lined with brick buildings, and, of course, lit up at night with dozens of historic gaslights .

The shopping district dates back to the 1890s, when specialty shops sprung up geared towards the wealthy vacationers who would stay nearby. These were the early days of the Gaslight District, and in many ways, the area still retains its historic vibe and charm.

But behind these historic details are more than 170 modern-day shops and fine-dining restaurants that bring Petoskey into the 21st century. The Gaslight District is famous for its shopping , and pulls in travelers from all nearby communities, like Bay Harbor, Bay View, Harbor Springs, and beyond.

Little Traverse Wheelway

Anyone looking to drink in the beauty of Little Traverse Bay and the natural beauty of Petoskey will want to take a trip along the Little Traverse Wheelway. The 26-mile wheel way, also known as the "Bike Path" among locals, runs from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs and is one of the most beautiful bike paths in the state.

One of the top sections of the entire wheel way runs right through Petoskey, along the Bayfront park all the way to Petoskey State Park. The majority of the path hugs the water, giving dramatic views over Little Traverse Bay. Half a mile of the trail goes along a boardwalk over wetland areas between Bayfront Park and Petoskey State Park.

The path follows the original Little Traverse Wheelway, which was constructed in the 1880s. While it has certainly been brought up to modern-day standards, it's a great way to get in touch with the past of northwestern Michigan.

In the summer months, you can even ride the rapids down a quarter-mile-long whitewater course , which is one of the only ones in the Lower Peninsula.

Among the natural features within the recreation area are cliffs and unpaved trails, as well as plenty of paved paths and boardwalks.

Bird-watchers love to stroll the many paths with their binoculars and keep their eyes peeled for the dozens of species that fly through the skies around the Bear River Valley.

Bayfront Park

For some of the best views of Little Traverse Bay, be sure to schedule a stop at Bayfront Park. This prime stretch of lakefront stretches for 25 acres, including 7,800 feet of public shoreline.

The long park hugs the coast of Lake Michigan and is a beautiful place to visit for a stroll. From the park, you have views of the breakwater, the lighthouse, the bay, and some parts of the lovely city. You'll also find walking paths ; a fishing pond ; a waterfall ; and, of course, plenty of shoreline, with a 144-slip marina .

You can also climb the stairs to reach Sunset Park , which is another beautiful lookout spot overlooking Little Traverse Bay.

The only thing missing from Bayfront Park is a swimmable beach, but visitors overlook that one downside because the views are pretty spectacular. If you really want a beach, there is a rocky beach near the Petoskey Breakwall.

Bucket List Journey

Petoskey Area Bucket List: 10 Things to Do in the City & Beyond

Petoskey Area? What? Where? Yeah, that’s what I thought, too, before heading to this northern Michigan lakeside treasure. There are a handful of little towns that make up this section of the state, each with their own charm. Some boast quaint downtowns brimming with gourmet restaurants, tasting rooms and high-end stores, while others have waterfront homes that will have you searching out ‘For Sale’ signs. Some have wineries serving the local juice, and others have mountainside adventures (like disc golf!). And all have beautiful shores dotted with yachts bopping in the water and million dollar sunsets. You will not be lacking in things to do and see in the area, and here are some of the best.

Petoskey Area Bucket List: 10 Things to Do in the City & Beyond

1. ✦ hunt for the famous petoskey stones.

The Petoskey stone is both a rock and a fossil, and hunting for them in the Petoskey area of Michigan is one of the top things to do for kids and adults (myself included!). The fossilized rugose coral stones are unique to the beaches of the Great Lakes and can be found on Petoskey’s shores.

The stones were formed after the dead corals were covered with sediment, and gradually became a part of Alpena Limestone. Stone seekers from all over the globe trot to the Petoskey area to find the fossilized treasure. However, it is sometimes easier said than done. It took some hardcore searching and lots of tips from the locals, but I was lucky enough to find more than a dozen of them!

You can pretty much find them wherever you see rocks near water, but some of the most popular places are Petoskey State Park, Magnus City Park Beach and East Park.

2. ✦ See the Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix

What is a mushroom house? I knew you’d ask—think hobbit house meets gnome home. Architect Earl Young built around thirty homes in Charlevoix in his very unique style of using large boulders, curvy eaves and exposed rafter tails. You can use a self-guided tour map to navigate on your own (many are walkable right from the downtown) or take a guided Mushroom House group tour.

The house pictured is my favorite and the first mushroom home Young built, so make sure to see this one!

3. ✦ Take a Tour at Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen

Kilwins Chocolate Kitchen may just be an actual heaven for all you sweet-toothed, chocolate lovers. They offer homemade chocolates, truffles, corn brittle, ice cream and fudge (try the sea-salt caramel!). But, the best part is that you can soak up the divine scents of cocoa, caramel and nuts by taking a free tour of the magical kitchen. The tour offers a glimpse into the fascinating history of the store and a detailed review of how the delicious sweets are made. Oh, and did I mention that there are samples?!? At the end, you get to pick a little piece of chocolate, but that wasn’t enough for me. I came home with a handbag filled to the brim.

Tours are conducted Monday to Friday from 10 am – 4:30 pm, every half hour. Reservations are recommended, but we were able to walk right in and take the next tour.

4. ✦ Go Wine Tasting

Next to chocolate, wine is my favorite thing. Are you with me? The wines here are very distinctive and unique to the Petoskey area.

At Walloon Lake Winery , you can have a great wine tasting experience along with arranging a wedding of your dreams or joining one of their sip & paint events (FYI—I found a Petoskey stone in the vineyards here!). Petoskey also houses America’s first and only maple winery, Maple Moon. They have about 10 different wines, but don’t miss a taste of the maple blackberry! Plus, their straight up maple syrup is delish. We brought a bottle of the Bourbon Barrel Aged wine home.

Go to Petoskey Farms Vineyard not only for the wine, but for the beautiful patio that overlooks the vines below. In the summer they even have a wood-fired pizza oven food truck. Pizza and wine? A match made in heaven. If cider is more your thing, stop by Resort Pike Cidery and Winery , which specializes in unique flavors, like local red beet and apple cider.

There are a lot of vineyards to choose from ( here’s a map ), and it’s super easy to find your way to them, but if you don’t have a designated driver, then take a tour with Vine Ride .

5. ✦ Window Shop in the Historic Gaslight District

Offering twinkling panoramas of Little Traverse Bay, Downtown Petoskey is settled in a world of its own. I am not exaggerating when I say it is like taking a trip back in time. Lit with vintage-looking gaslight street lamps, the boulevards are lined with charming little independent stores, boutiques, art galleries and winery tasting rooms. It was actually a surprise how unique each store was—I didn’t even know that I wanted/needed anything until peeking through the windows. Then window shopping turned into shopping.

Stop by Symons General Store and treat yourself to Michigan candy (or a handful of sour gummy worms), pick up a fine gift for the home at Shed , buy some polished Petoskey stones at Grandpa Shorters , have a delicious meal and coffee at one of the many cafes. We loved Palette Bistro for its food and stunning views.

With all of this, and more, it really is no wonder that it has been named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the best small towns to visit in the USA.

6. ✦ Walk Through a Lavender Field

You definitely have to time your visit right to Lavender Hill Farm in order to be surrounded by a sea of purple blooms for that perfect Instagram photo. But, even if it’s not the season, don’t miss a stop here! We were early by a couple of weeks, but still loved roaming around because there are plenty of things to do even when the flowers are not blooming.

Peek into the cute shop that sells everything lavender inside (and it smells heavenly in there!), partake in one of their movie nights or dance to the live music in the barn.

Lavender Hill Farm is located in Boyne City and open from May through October, from 10am-5pm daily. Check their website for official dates and times.

7. ✦ Follow the Footsteps of Ernest Hemingway

The famous American journalist and writer, Ernest Hemingway, has spent a few chunks of life in the Petoskey area (that guy got around, didn’t he?). Follow his footsteps by visiting the historical sites such as the Red Fox Inn where he and his bride stayed, Greensky Hill Indian Methodist Church that is a sacred location mentioned in Hemingway’s writings and Charles Farm where Hemingway spent his summers. Also, make sure to pop into Horton Bay General Store in Boyne City to see the place where Hemingway had his nightly cup of coffee (BTW, it’s right next door to the Red Fox Inn).

For a complete list of Hemingway stops, check out this brochure about his history in the area or visit the website for the Michigan Hemingway Society .

8. ✦ Take a Tour of Castle Farms

Yep, there’s a castle in Michigan! Castle Farms was a dairy farm built in 1918, and today it’s a premier wedding venue (who doesn’t want to get married at a castle?) and a chance for visitors to walk through 100 years of history. In the summer there is a guided tour, though the strategically placed numbers throughout the property make it easy to do a self-guided tour as well.

There are plenty of things to see and do on the property, but definitely don’t miss these highlights:

  • Do a wine tasting at 1918 Cellars
  • Get mesmerized by Michigan’s largest outdoor model railroad (over 2500 feet of track!)
  • Stroll through the handful of pretty gardens, and feed the ducks
  • Get lost in the Hedge Maze

For an extra bucket list adventure make sure to take the Ironton Ferry over! It is an historic four-car ferry that has been in service since 1883 and crosses a very narrow part of Lake Charlevoix. It only takes 5-minutes, but you’ll be riding on something that is listed in Michigan’s Directory of Historic Places and Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

Some activities are seasonal, so check the Castle Farms website to plan your visit.

9. ✦ Catch a Million Dollar Sunset

I had heard that the Petoskey area was the home of the million dollar sunsets, and they didn’t disappoint. If you are anywhere along the water when the weather is right, it’s pretty hard to miss a stunning one. With that said, I did have a couple favorites. Time your evening stroll to the Petoskey beacon correctly and you can get wowed with orange reflections along the water. Or grab a nice glass of wine at the Inn at Bay Harbor and head to their patio, because wine and sunsets are a perfect pair.

For even more sunset options, see Stafford’s top 5 picks .

10. ✦ Have a Bucket List Adventure on Boyne Mountain

Disk golf, paintball, ziplining? What’s your bucket list adventure? Boyne Mountain is best known for it’s winter activities on the snow, but don’t discount the fun you can have at other times of the year too. Play one of two championship golf courses, try their 18-hole disc golf course, load up on ammo for a fierce game of paintball or fly up in the trees on a zipline.

For a milder adventure, rent a golf cart and drive the 7-mile loop around the property. Follow the ride up with a wet and wild time at the year-round indoor waterpark, Avalanche Bay™ .

The Petoskey is indeed a small area, but it is packed with plenty of things to do! It’s full of picturesque lake scenery, hidden gems, historical sites, and a whimsical ambience.

Essential Tips for Visiting the Petoskey Area Getting There: Flying into Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) is the easiest and Delta, American, and United Airlines will fly into it. Then it is just over an hour to the Petoskey area. Another option is the Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) , serviced by Delta. For driving directions, see the Petoskey Area website . Where to Stay in the Petoskey Area: The Petoskey area is known for its lakefront views, and I was fortunate enough to stay close to the water. I stayed in an historic Victorian, Stafford’s Bay View Inn , and it was perfectly located, plus put the BEST cookies on my bed every night and complimentary sticky buns at breakfast!

The Inn at Bay Harbor is a great choice if you are looking for a higher end hotel (we loved their restaurant there, too!). For something on the less expensive side, try the Terrace Inn .  You can find a  full list of lodging properties on the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau website .

Getting Around: If you fly in, renting a car at the airport is really the best way to experience the Petoskey area. A list of rental companies in the area can be found here . If you are not renting a car, there are a few other options. There are shuttles available at the Traverse City airport (you can see a list here ). It is possible to get around by taxi, but that can get quite expensive (especially if you want to check all the things to do off this bucket list!). If you choose, Uber and Lyft are also available.

Annette, reading this makes me want to visit Petosky, Michigan! I had never heard of this small town before, but there are a lot of quirky, unique things to do encourage me to add to my own bucket list!

I am happy to hear that! There are so many cool little towns in the world that are worth visiting and Petoskey is one of them!

Believe me, nothing to do with that. Maybe few things like eat lunch, chocolate factory and that all. In December really bad idea visit this region in Michigan State

Very good article content to highly meaningful images, hope that in the future you will share more for everyone to refer to. Thank you very much.

We live close to the Indiana border and Petoskey is our go to spot. We are close to Chicago and have lots of options but Petoskey…that’s the place. It is a beautiful place to visit and it’s right on the water. There are hidden trails right in the town that go along a river that runs into the bay. It has a ton little unique shops with all kinds of eateries. There is a lot of history in the area. All kinds of out door activities from swimming, boating, snowmobiling, down hill skiing, cross country skiing, sleigh rides, snowshoeing….tons of trails….it’s a gem. In door there are museums and shopping a restaurant where Ernest Hemingway use to be a frequent…..if he stayed in the area you know it has something to offer. There is a chocolate factory….so much more …

I love Petoskey! My parents have a cottage across from Bay Harbor just west of town. Yes, downtown is great with the shops, restaurants and the park to say nothing of the view. I like to relax at Zorn Park Beach in Harbor Springs and get my steps in walking the path to Charlevoix. Day trip to Mackinac Island is very doable, even recommended.

I can’t wait to visit

Find More Things to Do in Petoskey Michigan

Summertime is the peak travel season in Petoskey, largely because of the gorgeous weather and the plethora of outdoor things to do in town. However, this is the kind of place that you should consider visiting more than once and at different times during the year.

There’s nothing quite like experiencing Petoskey during the quiet depths of winter, when the blossoms begin to bloom, or when the autumn colors cast an entirely different glow on the community. No matter when you come to Petoskey, you’ll make memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

A lover of all things Michigan. Will never get tired of exploring the unique places across the state and meeting all the awesome inspiring people that are here. Always ready for a new Michigan adventure! Owner, Director, and Chief Explorer!

What about Bay View. It’s on the national Historic register and had the Baview Music Fedtival performances for 8 weeks Startung the last week in June. The musical is the Sound of Music. There’s an Opera, Sunday evening vesper concerts, special performances all on the Festival website.

Honestly, we never combine Petoskey with other cities. There’s enough there (and in Charlevoix) to make for a day by itself. I agree with the other commenter that Bay View is great, and their 4th fireworks are a good show. If you have kids, the Rocking Horse Toy Store downtown is one of the few locally owned toy stores left, and it’s a real charmer. Cutlers, just down the block and across the street, is a local institution: it’s a locally owned kitchen and housewares store with a wide array of quality and interesting items. I almost always find a gift there. There are arts festivals in the city park during the summer– typically with no admission fee for visitors. There is also a great antiques show at the beginning and end of the summer at the fairgrounds.

Maple Moon Sugarbush and Winery

Maple Moon Sugarbush and Winery, Petoskey Michigan

4454 Atkins Rd  Petoskey, MI 49770

Maple Moon Sugarbush and Winery herald themselves as  America's First Maple Winery!

They explain it as, "Maple Moon ferments the sugars in the maple syrup instead of fermenting the sugars found in grapes or other fruits.  The base wine is DRY (with zero residual sugar).  So these wines range from dry to sweet.  What makes them sweet?  Well.. more maple syrup is added after fermentation if a sweeter wine is desired."

Maple Moon does not use cane sugar or any other sweeteners. However, they do have some traditionally fermented wines for those not brave enough to try a maple wine.

Maple Moon Sugarbush and Winery, Petoskey Michigan

They also have a great outside area to enjoy a glass of wine! Plus, the view is fantastic!

We really enjoyed our stop at Petoskey Farms Vineyard and Winery.  We met the owners and they were so friendly! They patiently took the time to teach us more about the grape process and answer all of our questions.

We were in awe of the stunning view of their 22 acres of rolling hills and countryside as we stood on their 60-foot deck.  It's the perfect setting to sample a great variety of wine. Petoskey Farms is family-owned and operated, which we love.
