The Best Things to Do in Janesville, WI

(UPDATED OCTOBER 2022) My visit to Wisconsin was such a blast! To say that the town of Janesville blew me away would be an understatement. From a nationally-recognized water ski show team to gorgeous, artsy murals, there are so many cool things to experience. Here are the best things to do in Janesville, WI, that I loved about my hosted visit.

Janesville’s Incredible Downtown Murals

Public art is astonishing in Janesville, and from what I hear, they are just getting started. Vibrant, colorful works of art are found around town, and even some (namely the Janesville one) in an alleyway.

great-mural-in-downtown-janesville

A few of my favorite artworks were the Waves of Giving , Black Hawk , Origami Birds , and of course the Diversity & Women’s History mural, which can be seen blocks away.

Downtown Janesville is a pleasure to explore, and easy to do on foot. You’ll see many interesting restaurants, bars, and photogenic buildings, plus a dozen or more locally-owned shops to find gifts, treasures, accessories, and clothing.

I found the benches around town to be a friendly offering for those who need a quick rest, and the curb appeal of the storefronts were a welcoming factor, too. Janesville has a noticeable sense of pride and community, a real treat to experience.

historic-statue-in-janesville

I was in awe of the gorgeous riverfront in downtown Janesville! It reminded me of strolling around Germany from the looks of the scenery, and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the beaches along the waterfront.

Be sure to catch the bridge all lit up at dusk.

The Rotary Botanical Gardens

I am still on Cloud 9 from walking through the Rotary Botanical Gardens , a 20-acre property with lake-front themed gardens and an overload of beauty. There are 26 different gardens, ranging from Japanese to children’s, English cottage garden to French formal, many with scenic views of Lions Beach.

The Rotary Botanical Garden is also an in-demand place for weddings and special events.

childrens-garden-janesville

One of the things I might mention is the gardens have engraved benches with thoughtful quotes for sitting or enjoying the weather and scenery. I don’t find that in many of the gardens I visit, so I was especially appreciative of the options for soaking up the scenery.

janesville-rotary-botanical-garden-blooms-and-bridge

One of the coolest things I found at the Rotary Botanical Garden was a popcorn plant that smelled just like buttered popcorn when you rubbed its leaves.

Fun Fact : Pay attention to the cart inside the entrance, which displays current blooms and tells you what plants you are seeing.

Janesville’s Tasty Citrus Cafe

I had a fantastic breakfast from Citrus Cafe . The cheery and friendly restaurant offers a packed menu with all the breakfast favorites you can think of. I had a darned tasty Greek omelet with rotisserie gyro meat, spinach, feta, and tomatoes.

Accompanying my hearty omelet were hash browns and a side of tzatziki.

greek-gyro-omelet-and-hash-browns

This is the only restaurant I’ve ever seen biscuit and gravy as a side option. You can also pick toast or an English muffin. And then Citrus Cafe added another feature “do you want your omelet folded or fluffy?” which blew me away. Kudos for both of those firsts.

Citrus Cafe also serves fresh-squeezed orange juice.

So Chopped and Bodacious

Indulge in healthy fare at So Chopped, a refreshing lunch choice for custom-made hand-tossed salads, quiche, sandwiches, and soup. You can eat your meal alongside the Rock River on the patio for primo views and fresh air.

So Chopped is part of the Bodacious Shops of Block 42 that encompasses an olive oil store and coffee shop. It’s a trio of businesses in one building with three different concepts; something I was unfamiliar with, but a fan of.

pimento-cheese-grilled-cheese-and-soup

Drafthouse is another popular Janesville eatery, with a sleek and lovely interior, plus a tasty menu to go with it. We had melt-in-your-mouth white cheddar cheese curds with vodka marinara sauce. I opted for Roasted Brussels Sprouts for my main course with a citrus dill aioli dipping sauce.

I really liked the vibe at drafthouse and appreciated the attention to detail in the restaurant and the dishes.

Genisa Wine Bar

For an exceptional dinner, drinks, and patio setting, Genisa Wine Bar is one of Janesville’s best downtown eateries. The charcuterie boards and craft cocktails are perfection, and the dinner options are tantalizing and exciting.

Our meat and cheese board had fresh micro greens, almonds, cashews, and sliced baguette to accompany them. It was sensational!

genisa-meat-and-cheese-board

I had a classic Caprese salad, and my friend, Sara, enjoyed the Spicy Salami Brick Oven Pizza. For dessert, we split the Brick Oven Blueberry Buckle with vanilla ice cream. This restaurant is a great date night option, too.

Sugar Exchange: A Unique Janesville Stop

My social media followers went crazy over the pictures from my S’mores charcuterie platter at The Sugar Exchange . This perfect little sweet shop has an Instagram-worthy entrance, retro and European candies, “penny candy”, and a whole ice cream bar.

sugar-exchange-storefront

Our S’mores charcuterie featured Oreos, Reeses Cups, Kit Kats, Hershey Bars (and Cookes & Cream), graham crackers, marshmallows, and strawberries, and there are probably a few items for dipping that I left out. There were also small dishes of jelly, Nutella, and peanut butter.

sugar-exchange-candies-and-soda

The tray is served outdoors only, and with an open flame for toasting your skewered treats. Caution: Be mindful of the wind as the flame can get a bit carried away.

A Stellar Coffee House

I was super impressed by the coffee shops in Janesville. You will never be far from a good cold brew or fancy schmancy gourmet coffee treat. Mocha Moment was one of the delicious options, while Bodacious Brew was another.

I loved Bodacious Brew’s cold brew and Avocado Wrap breakfast sandwich with eggs and cheddar cheese. You can also get quiche, bagels, and breakfast bowls here.

The Iconic Rock Aqua Jays

The residents of Janesville are so lucky to have the Rock Aqua Jays water ski show team in their city. JoIn them for free ski shows at Traxler Park on Rock River Sundays and Wednesdays around 7 PM. Again, this is a two-hour free show that is chock full of talented skiers, dancers, acrobats, boaters, and fun.

It was my first time ever seeing a professional water ski show and I couldn’t have loved it more.

traxler-park-janesville

I was shocked to see the sheer number of people that make up the team; that is dedication. Rock Aqua Jays has hosted the national and many other water ski championships over the years, and won many, as well.

There are concession stands and food trucks to grab a bite while you watch the incredible show they’ve put together for you.

water-skier-pyramid

No pressure now, but this is one of the coolest attractions I have been to in the whole country.

rock-aqua-jays-precision-water-skiing

Watch for these downtown Janesville events throughout the year: Rock River Wine Walk, Music at the Marv (every Tuesday through summer), Nights on Festival, Meander Downtown, and Jolly Jingle .

Janesville’s Lincoln-Tallman Historic House

My guided tour of the Lincoln-Tallman House was easily one of the best things to do in Janesville, Wisconsin. I am a Presidential fan and try to add any attraction related to US Presidents to my itinerary, and in this case, I killed two birds with one stone.

lincoln-talllman-house-bed-and-porch

The Lincoln-Tallman House, circa 1857, is a lovely preserved house museum of a family who contributed much to Rock County’s history. They also hosted presidential wanna be Mr. Abe Lincoln for two nights before his run for office.

It would awesome to know the business that was discussed on his visit, but regardless, the home has exceptional furnishings and stories that are plenty to take in. Pay close attention to the darling little fairies on light fixtures and lamps—a charming touch.

lincoln-tallman-living-room

Alongside the house museum are the two homes that belonged to Mr. Tallman’s sons. One is a gift shop and Rock County Historical Society museum that holds various treasures that change from time to time. The Pauline Pottery and Pickard China collection, donated by a local, is incredible…and worth a great deal of money.

front-porch-with-rocker-and-plants

I also appreciated that the museum has events to bring in locals to be a part of the preservation and involved in the community. Be sure to check out Janesville artist Gretchen Frick McBlair paintings and line art.

Skelly’s Farm Market

Skelly’s Farm Market is such fun place to visit. The indoor market has a bakery and well-appointed gift shop, while the outdoor was filled with picture-perfect produce and a fun playground. I can almost bet you can’t leave without taking home one of the delicious-looking pastries in the market.

Even the smell was dangerous.

skellys-farmers-market

On my visit, Skelly’s sunflower fields were in bloom so I had the opportunity to wander around the red and green loops. Each loop featured several photo-ops designed with Instagram-worthy props. It was so beautiful. There were also a few places to climb on something for epic views of nothing but sunflowers.

I found the specialty flower portion of the property to be my favorite. I can see where these seasonal events (sunflowers, pumpkin patch, corn mazes, berry picking), would be a big draw for people all around the area. I need to come back when it is apple cider donut season.

Skelly’s does a fantastic job making this an easy to follow attraction and everything was very well marked.

Hiking Janesville’s Ice Age Trail

You can get outdoors and explore a rare offering in Janesville—the Ice Age Trail. My friend Sara of Travel With Sara spent several days on new trails, capturing great photos and enjoying the often rugged terrain.

ice-age-trail-bench

If you prefer to just limit your outdoors to parks, there is no shortage of them in Janesville. a few to keep in mind are Riverside Park (splash pad, disc golf, bike trails, boat launch), Bond Park (skate park, 12 acres), Palmer Park (pet exercise area, sand court volleyball, wading pool, nature and bike trails), and Rockport Park (6 miles of trails including cross country ski trails, Olympic swimming pool, and peace park playground).

You’ll find even more great hiking opportunities in nearby Milton , only a few minutes away.

Where to Stay in Janesville

The Cobblestone Hotel & Suites was my home-away-from-home on my visit. It was perfect, and in a great location for walking around the city and not having to move my car. Cobblestone has an elegant lobby with a fireplace focal point, and is also home to Wissota Chophouse , an upscale restaurant.

You will see an entrance to it through the eye-catching green doors in the lobby. I was not familiar with this chain, and was a big fan.

cobblestone-hotel-curb-appeal

My room was well-appointed and incredibly spacious. The King Bed was so comfortable and I also had a sitting area between the entrance and bedroom with a couch and TV. I ate my to-go-food from Wissota (truffle Mac and cheese) there and appreciated the additional living quarters. Cobblestone also had an invigorating shower and nice, relaxing bathtub.

If you wish to enjoy swimming during your hotel stay, Cobblestone has an indoor pool and also a fitness room. There is a small sundries shop off the lobby if you forget something. Also near the lobby is the room for receiving your complimentary hot breakfast during the early hours.

Wifi and parking are also complimentary.

20+ Things to Do in Janesville WI on a Beautiful Summer Weekend

Posted on Last updated: September 12, 2023

I had the privilege of visiting Janesville on a beautiful summer weekend, and accomplished many of the awesome things to do in Janesville WI in warm, balmy weather.

We had a full itinerary of Janesville activities in and around the city – from the vibrant and art-filled city center to the beautiful nature surrounding the city. This city has a lot to offer, with the amount of activities of a bigger city with a small-town charm.

I honestly had not heard of Janesville before visiting Wisconsin for the first time, but I left with a loving adoration for this small city and its welcoming people… not to mention its food, art, surrounding nature, and more! Janesville truly stole my heart, and this article should explain why.

Top 10 Things to Do in Janesville WI

I’ll start with the top 10 things to do in Janesville WI, before getting into some lesser-known Janesville activities you should check out if you have more time. Below that, I will complete this Janesville travel guide with the best restaurants and places to eat/drink and where to stay!

Rotary Botanical Gardens

Rotary Botanical Gardens Janesville WI

The Rotary Botanical Gardens have an interesting history in that they were created on the site of an abandoned sand and gravel landfill! Some locals in the area came together to make something truly beautiful out of a blank slate, and today, the 20-acre Botanical Gardens are one of the most beautiful places in Janesville.

The Gardens are much bigger than meets the eye, too. You can wander around here for hours: along the beautiful lake, through the children’s garden (complete with storybook and sculptures), through the Japanese tea Garden, the English Cottage Garden, the French Formal Gardens, and across the iconic red bridge. Bring a picnic and choose your favorite spot!

Each year, they have a different artistic theme at the Rotary Botanical Gardens , and you will see art with this theme around the entire garden (2023 was Ladybugs – you can’t miss them)! One of my favorite features here were the dozens of wooden benches with lovely nature quotes engraved into them – I enjoyed stopping to read each one.

Rent an E-Bike (or do an E-Bike Tour)

Renting an e-bike in Janesville WI is one of the best activities- see murals

One of the MUST-DO things to do in Janesville WI is rent an e-bike and explore the city and/or its surroundings. Janesville is surrounded by picturesque bike trails, such as the Ice Age Trail (below), and the whole city is filled with art. An e-bike is a great way to see the most in the least amount of time. Rent bikes from Velocity Multi-Sport Rentals , who have a great selection.

If you want to make the most, you can combine an e-bike ride with a historical/city tour. Rich from Roam Around Tours offers insightful city tours both on and off the e-bike, with historical info and even descriptions on each and every mural.

Janesville Historic District Tour

Janesville Historic District Things to do - tour

You can also tour the city center on foot; it’s small and manageable enough for those in decent shape! Janesville’s city center occupies a few streets on each side of the river, with plenty of parks and restaurants galore. Book a historical walking tour (Rich, linked above, offers those too) and get to know Janesville’s most iconic spots in one afternoon.

Make sure not to miss the town square, views of the Rock River, Courthouse Park, and the many murals.

Janesville Art Murals

Janesville Wisconsin colorful balloon mural

One of my absolute favorite things about Janeville is how vibrant and colorful it is, with murals around every corner. This is because of their unique concept of ‘ Art Infusion .’ The Art Infusion is an annual competition that began with sidewalk chalk and has evolved into having muralists from all over the world complete incredible, huge murals on any city wall that will take one.

Nowadays, there are dozens of colorful murals throughout Janesville, each with its own unique meaning. Art infusion is normally held in September, and locals love to come out and watch the murals or chalk drawings being done in real-time. In my opinion, this is an awesome idea that more cities need to adopt!

Janesville Farmer’s Market

Janesville Farmers Market on a busy Saturday morning

The Janesville Farmer’s Market has got to be one of the friendliest and most creative farmer’s markets I have been to in a long time! Running every Saturday from 8am-1pm from May to October, it’s THE place to be on a Saturday morning. It’s almost like the entire city flocks downtown for the market – playing in the park, walking dogs, drinking craft coffees, and shopping for trinkets.

From handmade woodwork to pet accessories to crystal jewelry to homemade baked goods, they really have it all at the Janesville Farmer’s Market . You can see tons of the murals around the city when you walk around the

Ice Age Trail

a portion of the Janesville Ice Age Trail. Perfect for a scenic bike ride!

One of the most interesting things to do in Janesville WI is to talk, run, or bike the Ice Age Trail . What’s that, you may ask? Well, it’s 1200 miles of incredible landscapes formed thousands of years ago by retreating glaciers! The Ice Age Trail is one of the US’s only National Scenic Trails, which is pretty special.

Janesville’s section of the Ice Age Trail is about 10 miles long. It traces the Rock River for a while and passes through some forested areas too that are popular for bird watching. This trail is also fabulous for a bike ride filled with epic views.

Aqua Jays Water Ski Team

Rock Aqua Jays water ski team janesville

One of the most unexpected and awesome things to experience in Janesville is one of the country’s most incredible water ski teams! Yes, you read that right. The Rock Aqua Jays are impressively skilled water skiers who form pyramids and do tricks while being towed behind a boat. I have never seen anything like it!

Make sure to visit Janesville on a weekend they are in town, as they have competitions some weekends. This is surely one of the most unique and exciting things to do around Janesville and a big source of pride for the area as well.

Rock County Historical Society

Lincoln Tallmann House Shakespeare in the Park Janesville WI

The Rock County Historical Society is a center dedicated to the history of the whole county, which is located in central Janesville. On-site is the RCHS museum, which depicts lots of interesting historical items that are significant to the area, such as Parker Pens and Pickard China.

Next door is the truly incredible Lincoln Tallmann House which is as historic as it is beautiful. The Italianate style mansion was built in 1837, and is named for the family who built it (Tallmann) and its most famous guest before he was president (Lincoln).

If you are there in summer, make SURE to check if there’s any outdoor theater going on at the Lincoln-Tallmann House. It’s the most perfect and picturesque shaded place for an outdoor play, especially Shakespeare in the Park, like we saw. Bring a folding chair and enjoy the summer breeze while watching truly impressive and skilled actors put on a great show. Check the Janesville Performing Arts Center for upcoming events.

Milton House Museum

Milton House Museum Life Size Model

The Milton House Museum is a National Historic Landmark from 1844 just outside of Janesville in Milton. This historic, hexagonal-shaped house was a hotel for early settlers and also a known stop on the underground railroad.

The Goodrich family, who owned the hotel, were thought to have helped possibly dozens of freedom seekers escape to the north from slavery. Since the underground railroad was just that, undercover, only one person was confirmed to have been helped here, but it was likely many more.

The family would pull carriages up to the cabin outside, which was shielded from the hotel room views. From there, there’s a short, 45ft underground passage to the cellar below the hotel. It was pretty incredible to think about how many people’s livelihoods were saved by that very passage.

Our tour guide at the Milton house was simply incredible. She was knowledgeable about every room and artifact in the house and SO well-versed in its history – her passion truly shone through. I highly recommend booking a tour here to make the most of the experience.

Kayak Down the Rock River with Drift Away Paddle Co

Drift Away Paddle Co Kayaking. onthe Rock river best things to do in Janesville

Now you’ve seen plenty of art, culture, and history; it’s time to really experience the Janesville nature. I mean, it is called “Wisconsin’s Great Outside” and has lots of beauty in the area. One of the best ways to experience this is by kayaking down the Rock River with Drift Away Paddle Co.

For this, you meet the passionate Drift Away team at Murwin Park, less than 30 minutes outside Janesville’s city center. Here, you get ready, put your things in provided wet bags, apply sunscreen, and then shuttle to the start point. Then it’s time to drift away (well, drift back to where you started from).

Depending on the speed of the river, the whole thing will take 2-3 hours and it’s really more of a show, leisurely drift than a strenuous kayak trip. You don’t really have to paddle much at all – just sit back and enjoy the scenes of nature going by.

There are tons of flora and fauna to appreciate along the way, from interesting trees to turtles, herons, and even otters! And there are some beautiful houses to make you ‘oooh’ and ‘aaaah’ as well. It’s an all-around awesome experience! You can also rent tubes and paddleboards from Drift Away Paddle Co in other rivers and lakes in the area too.

More Things to Do in Janesville WI

It’s tough to do ALL the things to do in Janesville in a few days, so here are a few more ideas if you have more time.

Camden Playground + Palmer Park

To get out into nature quite close to the city center, check out Palmer Park for a picnic, walk, swim, tennis game, or fun with the whole family at Camden Playground. This playground is truly a kid’s dream, with a ton of fun structures to climb/slide, a kid-friendly zip line, and even a castle. It’s ADA accessible, too! Visiting this playground is one of the best things to do in Janesville with kids.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park is another recreational center just outside the city, full of nature and activities. The park actually hosts a part of the Ice Age Trail, as well as one of the most popular hiking trails, the Devil’s Staircase Trail. The views of the river are gorgeous, and there are tennis courts, a wading pool, and even a golf course on offer here.

Go Bowling Rivers Edge Bowl

River's Edge Bowl Janesville things to do

For a fun activity in Janesville, why not go bowling?! This is a perfect activity no matter the weather, and River’s Edge Bowl has plenty of lanes within walking distance of the city center. Stop by after a dinner in the city for a fun end to your evening.

Wisconsin Wagon Company

For one of the most unique things to do in Janesville, check out the Wisconsin Wagon Company. This old factory will truly take you back in time as you experience their production of true, old-style wooden wagons- yep, the kind you used to pull around (or be pulled around in) when you were a kid!

This factory was booming before the automobile industry came about – when it lost a lot of momentum. But their wooden kids’ toys were a big hit, and they still produce a few kinds of wagons in their workshop today. This is a true Janesville souvenir, as each one comes with ‘Janesville ball bearing’ marked on the side!

Shopping in Uptown Janesville

While downtown Janesville is the place for browsing and eating, uptown Janesville is the spot to go when you have some shopping to do. Uptown is where you exit the freeway to get to Janesville, where the I-90 and 14 cross paths. Uptown area is the first impression you get of Janesville – with a LOT of big shopping centers and malls.

Check out some restaurant, movie theaters, and well-known shops like Target or Home Depot, or head to Uptown Janesville Shopping mall for more options.

Where to Eat in Janesville

Another thing Janesville really ‘WOW’ed me with was its incredible selection of food and drink. There are so many amazing restaurants around here, as well as wineries, breweries, cafes, and more! Here are some of the best.

Genisa Wine Bar

Genisa Wine Bar Janesville Italian restaurant cheese and meat borad pizza meatballs bruschetta

This Italian restaurant is seriously jaw-droppingly good. Located right in the city center, Genisa has a delicious menu and a back patio looking out towards the sunset over the river. They have a fabulous wine list and the food is creative and flavorful. We tried just a little bit of everything here, from the loaded meat/cheese platter to a few pizzas, bruschetta, and the meatballs (which were my favorite). Everything was great!

Sandwich Bar

Sandwich bar janesville best places to eat

Sandwich Bar is so much more than a sandwich bar! It’s a whole vibe, a colorful place to rest, a fun bar, and a piece of art in and of itself (from the sandwiches to the wall art). All their sandwiches are handcrafted and made with creative ingredients with a few specials on rotation. A friend and I split the fried chicken and the roast beef, and they were both amazing.

29 South Cafe

janesville wisconsin tourism

If you want a delicious, home made breakfast in the center of town, look no further than 29 South Cafe. This family-owned establishment offers the warmest welcome, and equally warm freshly baked goods. It has. asuper cute atmosphere that feels like a country cottage, with some mouth-watering sweet and savory breakfast options on offer.

Northleaf Winery + Taproom

Northleaf Winery wine flights and cheese board Janesville/Milton WI

When visiting Milton House Museum, you MUST head to Northleaf winery afterwards – after all, it’s right next door! Northleaf winery is housed in a historic building, which is still apparent when you walk inside and see the impressive old wooden rafters.

The winery building offers over a dozen kinds of wine, both dry and fruity/sweet, and you can choose any of them for a flight. The cheese/snack boards to accompany the wine are also a must, and are filled to the bri with local cheese! The taproom next door has a lovaly outdoor patio for those who prefer beer or an open-air breeze.

Fermenting Cellars Winery

janesville wisconsin tourism

Fermenting Cellars is another gorgeous outdoor space just outside of Janesville serving up different kinds of wine (including blended wine coolers). Outside a beautiful log cabin is a whole outdoor bar area with live music on Sundays. For a simply enjoyable space to enjoy a few cold summer beverages, this is a must-see!

Milwaukee Grill

This is a locally-owned grill with great meal options in uptown Janesville, not far from the freeway exit. They have an outdoor patio and hearty dishes on the menu for lunch or dinner.

Buckhorn Supper Club

Buckhorn Supper Club Janesville

I must admit, I had no idea what a supper club was before I went to Wisconsin, but Buckhorn was a fabulous first supper club experience. Perched on the edge of Lake Koshkonong, Buckhown offers scenic vistas and also some classic Supper Club retro decor inside.

We sat outside here, and started with iconic brandy old-fashioned’s and steaming French onion soup. The table ordered a few different meat dishes, from prime rib to bacon-wrapped steak to stroganoff, and not one person was disappointed. Afterward, we walked out on the pier on the lake to watch the sunset to cap off a great day.

Lark is a bit of a bougier restaurant right next to Sandwich Bar with fantastic craft cocktails and well-presented creative dishes.

The Bodacious Brew

This cafe was recommended to me by a few locals during my time in Janesville. It looks right out to the river and has some of the best coffee in town!

Mocha Moment

Mocha moment coffee shop Janesville WI

For a delicious cafe with a forested view, check out Mocha Moment. This is great to visit on your way to the Ice Age trail!

Citrus Cafe

Citrus Cafe is another great option for a proper, filling, tasty American breakfast. Also located right in town.

Rock County Brewing

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rock County Brewing Company (@rockcountybrewing)

We all know Wisconsin is GREAT at beer, and Janesville of course sports its own city center brewery- Rock County Brewing. They do hand-crafted small batch brews here, so head in and check what they have on offer!

Where to Stay in Janesville

There are only a couple of hotels in Janesville – here are the best! Make sure to check out other unique places to stay in Wisconsin too.

Hampton Inn Janesville bed

Hampton Inn Janesville

This is where we stayed during our time in Janesville. The Hampton Inn has impressively modern and spacious rooms with great amenities too. The bed was SO comfy and I loved the toiletries and work desk. The hotel breakfast buffet was also fabulous here. It’s near Uptown Janesville by the freeway, but this mean’s ample parking and easy access to everywhere!

Cobblestone Hotel & Suites Janesville

The most central place to stay in Janesville is right on the river by the main city bridge – Cobblestone Hotel + Suites. This hotel offers the most ideal location if you don’t have a car, as well as competitive prices and spacious, cozy rooms (some with a view)!

Hope this has helped you figure out more than enough things to do in Janesville! Leave a comment below on what else I should add, and enjoy your trip!

If you’re after an active weekend getaway, you’ll be pleased to find an abundance of beautiful parks and recreational areas in the mid-sized city of Janesville, Wisconsin. Janesville, located an hour and 30 minutes southwest of Milwaukee on the Rock River, features rolling hills, a small-town vibe, and the verdant woodlands of scenic south-central Wisconsin.

Here’s how to make the most of a weekend there.

Head To The Market

If you’re traveling to Janesville in the fall, it’s a great time to visit Skelly’s Farm Market. Pick your pumpkins, squash, and gourds, or enjoy one of their fall activities, which include corn mazes, wagon rides, and apple cannons. Then stop by the bakery for apple cider donuts, apple crisps, cookies, and pies, plus homemade caramel apples.

If you can’t make it in the fall, don’t worry; Skelly’s Farm Market has a strawberry season and summer season that are well worth visits, too. Admission to the corn mazes costs $8 for the day; $5 buys you unlimited wagon rides for the day.

If your Janesville visit puts you in town on a Saturday, you’ll find fresh produce, meats, cheese, eggs, baked goods, plants and cut flowers, soaps, and other hand-made products at the Janesville Farmers Market . From May through October, this outdoor market sells only local foods and products. There are plenty of food vendors selling kettle corn, tacos, pastries, and more.

The Devil's Staircase on the Ice Age Trail.

Get Outdoors

You’ll discover some of Wisconsin’s most beautiful natural areas along the thousand-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail — one of only 11 National Scenic Trails in the country.

You can enjoy a variety of day hikes starting at different parts of the Ice Age Trail. The suggested hikes are included in a free download from the Ice Age Trail Guidebook and Google Map driving directions will lead you to the access points. Before you go, check the online trail map to read trail condition reports on the trail you intend to hike.

Janesville’s most scenic segment of the Ice Age Trail is the Devil’s Staircase that ascends the bluffs by Rock River in Riverside Park. You’ll hike 1.7 miles on this moderately difficult trail.

Wisconsin Explorer explains the difficulty: “Its linear 1.8 miles are mostly easy walking but also include a few short climbs [on] stone steps — these climbs and its sometimes narrow and precarious route make it a moderate level hiking path.”

In addition to the Ice Age Trail segment in Janesville, you’ll find 60 parks and 30 miles of paved off-road hiking trails around town, so there’s plenty of opportunities to get outdoors — whether you prefer hiking or biking — and enjoy the beauty of the area.

There’s something for everyone — even those who prefer not to consume alcohol — on a tour of Gray Brewing Company . One of the nation’s oldest family-owned beverage companies, Gray Brewing offers a full line of beers including their award-winning Gray Oatmeal Stout and Gray Honey Ale — an American blonde ale brewed with honey — plus root beer and gourmet sodas.

Sample one of Gray’s gourmet old-time soda flavors like grape soda, root beer, ginger beer, strawberry, or orange cream. Their signature soda, the Belfast Ginger Beer, leverages a recipe passed through the generations that uses “the finest oils, essences, extracts of lemon, as well as the purest Jamaican ginger.” The brewery takes care in its selection of the ingredients as well as the time-honored brewing process.

Rock County Brewing Company is located in Janesville’s historic Carriage Works building. This nano brewery produces hand-crafted beers in small batches. If you haven’t tasted a nitro beer, try the Dry Stout, one of Rock Country’s newest offerings. It’s a creamy traditional dry stout with a smooth taste on the tongue.

If you’d rather take a southern Wisconsin wine tour, stop by Fermenting Cellars Winery , located in a log cabin home. They ferment a variety of dry and sweet, red and white wines, plus a dessert coffee wine. Next stop is Northleaf Winery , where you can sample guided wine and cheese pairings or wine flights with cheese and crackers. Then head to Timber Hill Winery for the last stop on your Janesville winery tour. This boutique winery produces smaller quantities to achieve the best quality. Their latest addition is a mead made with local honey, fruit, and herbs.

Inside the Rotary Botanical Gardens.

Stroll The Botanical Gardens

Prepare to be wowed at the Rotary Botanical Gardens , an award-winning 20-acre non-profit botanical showcase. The location of the gardens was originally the site of an abandoned sand and gravel quarry. More than 15,000 yards (800 truckloads) of topsoil were hauled in to form the garden beds. Now you can take a guided garden tour or explore on your own the 24 different garden styles highlighting 4,000 varieties of plants. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for those 65 and older.

Take A History Tour

Start your history tour at the Rock County Historical Society . This resource center features the Lincoln-Tallman House, a mansion built in 1857; a Traditional Tour narrative that teaches about how prosperous Victorian families lived in the area; and a Help Wanted Tour where you can view Victorian life through the eyes of a servant. Admission is $10 for adults.

Tour the Milton House , the last certified Underground Railroad station in Wisconsin. Opened as a stagecoach inn in 1844 by Joseph Goodrick, the Milton House is one of the oldest standing poured grout buildings. A stop on the Underground Railroad, there’s a tunnel connecting the Milton house to a log cabin. Walk through the tunnel and learn about the Stagecoach Inn and how it was a successful part of the Underground Railroad. Admission is $8 for adults.

To discover more of the city’s local history, take a self-guided historic walking tour . There are 13 historic districts in Janesville that lend themselves perfectly to a walking tour. Download the free Clio app for Apple or Android to learn about the history and architecture of the area. There are more than 80 sites listed on the app that are within five miles of downtown Janesville.

Eating In Janesville

Dining in Janesville brings traditional Wisconsin staples like cheese curds and supper clubs, but you can also enjoy seasonal selections created by innovative chefs.

At Citrus Cafe you’ll enjoy fresh ground coffee, orange juice squeezed by the glass, plus bacon specially cut by a local butcher. A local favorite, the cafe was named Reader’s Choice Best Breakfast Restaurant for seven consecutive years by the Janesville Gazette . If you’re an early riser, you can savor one of their delicious breakfasts for just $5.99 thanks to the daily early bird breakfast specials that run from 6 to 9 a.m.

A downhome breakfast is in your future at Kealy’s Kafe . The cinnamon roll French toast is a local favorite as is the homemade bread with strawberry jam. Janesville Gazette readers voted Kealy’s Kafe number one fish fry in Janesville, so you may want to make a return visit for one of their Wednesday or Friday fish fries.

The Whiskey Ranch’s themed decor, with its hardwood floor and sheet metal lining the bar — plus a collection of guitars decorating the space — create a Southern rockabilly atmosphere. You’ll snack on a complimentary bucket of peanuts while you wait for your meal. Try one of the menu’s award-winning burgers. Or get your fill of Wisconsin cheese with the mac and cheese burger topped with Swiss, American, and cheddar jack cheeses, plus macaroni and cheese, and bacon.

For more than 20 years, Milwaukee Grill has been serving fresh approaches to classic American fare. The Signature Fried Chicken is a favorite that comes with either two or four pieces of chicken and your choice of a few sides. At the bar you’ll find Wisconsin draught beers, bottled microbrews, wine, and seasonal drinks and martinis.

Whether you’re craving steaks or seafood, you’ll find both at Wissota Chophouse . If you’re going to enjoy an Angus steak, why not enjoy it to the max? For $60, you can indulge in a 18-ounce dry aged, bone-in ribeye, or for $70, try the 3-ounce Japanese A-5 Wagyu Beef. Consider adding the Three Cheese Truffle Mac “side for two” for $11 more.

If seasonally-driven dishes are more your preference, stop by Lark Restaurant . You’ll enjoy a variety of American comfort foods served as small plates or entrees that incorporate locally sourced ingredients. Lark offers mixology classes and themed events like their BBQ and Bourbon Dinner — a four-course dinner featuring the chefs’ creative takes on barbecue, plus cocktail pairings made with Wisconsin’s J. Henry and Sons bourbon. Or just enjoy one of Lark’s original craft cocktails made with fresh ingredients and artisan spirits.

Shopping In Janesville

There’s a variety of shopping options in Janesville, whether you prefer boutiques or antiques and consignment stores. Antiques, collectibles, and housewares are abundant at Carousel Consignments . Angie’s on Main has three floors of eclectic, handmade, antique, and consignment items. If art is your interest, Raven’s Wish is an art gallery filled with art crafted by local artisans. Fulfill your gourmet coffee and tea cravings at The Bodacious Brew , which boasts a gourmet selection of coffee and tea from around the world.
