Tech Overview

While traditional irons utilize a 4 step forging process, the KING irons add a fifth step to deliver exceptional soft feel that better players demand. Each iron is crafted and 5-step forged from 1025 carbon steel for a more uniform grain structure and precise shaping.

A key to the enhanced forgiveness of the TOUR irons are the CNC milled undercuts in the back of each iron, which allow weight to be repositioned to lower CG for improved launch conditions, and more stability on off center hits.

The CNC milled cavities are filled with a TPU material and topped with an aluminum co-mold medallion, which both damp vibrations for a more pleasing sound and feel at impact.

50 Words or Less

With great feel and forgiveness, the Cobra KING Tour irons offer golfers both playability and consistency.  Modern looks that reflect its modern technology.

Check out the new 2023 Cobra KING Tour irons HERE

Introduction

Situated nonchalantly between ‘KING’ and ‘TOUR’ on the back of the namesake irons is the real headliner – ‘MIM TECHNOLOGY.’  MIM stands for Metal Injection Molding , a state of the art manufacturing process that allows Cobra to produce club heads with amazing precision, and with uniform metal grain structure that surpasses forgings.  What does the MIM Technology mean to you the golfer?  Keep reading to find out.

Check out the new Cobra LTDx irons HERE

The Cobra KING Tour irons have a look that caused me to hesitate on categorization.  The narrow topline and slight offset clearly communicate a pure players irons.  But both a little more length in the blade and a slightly wider sole might cause purists to raise an eyebrow.   If, like me, you find the compact look of blades intimidating, the KING Tour irons should be very appealing.

While the irons are devoid of the bold colors that give Cobra woods identity, the large ‘KING’ on the backside makes a clear statement of the brand.  There’s a lot going on in the cavity, but the chrome and black motif gives it a unified look.   The matte finish on the face and grooves devoid of paint fill give the irons a clean, classic look.

Sound & Feel

The Cobra King Tour irons produced a pleasant medium volume ‘thwack’ that was fairly consistent across the face.  Usually the first note I make, I had to revisit the sound after being enthralled with the soft, satisfying feel .  The irons offered excellent feedback on strike location without ever feeling harsh.

Feel is where the MIM Technology really shines for golfers.  Unlike a forged carbon steel head where the metal is literally pounded to achieve a tight grain structure, the MIM process starts with powdered stainless steel that results in a uniform, ultra tight grain, ensuring a consistent soft feel across the face – and face to face through the set.

Performance

Once I was able to shift my focus from the wonderful feel, I began to note how consistent the ball flights were.  Not only were shots tracking nice mid trajectories, they were landing in a fairly tight grouping.  Even on far less than perfect strikes, the carry was generous – more in line with what I’ve experienced with game improvement irons.

king tour cobra

As I mentioned earlier, Cobra designers did a marvelous job at communicating feedback, but they also were able to deliver stability .  The non-harsh feel comes from a vibration dampening TPU insert behind the face.  For stability, team Cobra utilized a tungsten insert in the toe.  Both attributes were executed with precision thanks again to the MIM process.

king tour cobra

The Cobra KING Tour irons have lofts that align with today’s players segment .  Spin was on the low side for me.  I attribute that to the KBS $ Taper shafts which are designed to be low spin.  Regardless, the irons offered plenty of workability.   As always, a proper fitting session will be the key to unlocking the full performance potential of the irons.

The Cobra KING Tour irons offer another great option in the players irons category for golfers seeking both feel and forgiveness.  What differentiates the King Tour irons is the advanced manufacturing technique MIM, which Cobra describes as “the most precise way to make a precision iron.”  And even though having ‘Tour’ in the name implies these irons are for better players only, they’re equally appropriate for those aspiring to be such.

Matt: Informative article. I have a friend playing Cobra King irons and loves them. The irons have more forgiveness than their appearance would suggest.

Thank you Matt. Love your stuff.

My golf spy compared this iron to the Pf-2 from New Level.

Can I request a review of the PF-1 and/or PF-2?

Eric appears to be making forged CNC product that is clean, crisp, and rivals the big boys. PF-1 at address, with less offset, looks flawless.

Thanks Matt!

Thanks for the kind comments Bob. We don’t take requests (sorry, reflex from band days) but will check in with New Level.

I’d like to know how these compare to the i210 and p770 in terms of head size and how easy they are to hit. They all have different construction and I’m assuming very different feel. That being said they seem to all sit in a similar category right above the t100/apex tcb etc in terms of forgiveness and ease of use

' src=

We have reviews of the P770 here: https://pluggedingolf.com/2020-taylormade-p770-irons-review-2/ and i210 here: https://pluggedingolf.com/ping-i210-irons-review/

To bad the company is not going to make of this anymore. Just like Greg said a lot of forgiveness on this iron, I just bought this today test it out of the driving range I know I wasn’t making a good contact but dem still flew in the air like crazy. I can hit my P wedge 120.

I believe and maintain, that Cobra’s technology is far superior to any other brand. It started with the F9 series, which in my view is the best they have ever produced. Great clubs. Pitty I can’t afford them teachers in South Africa gets paid lije crap. Enjoy playing, mates.

I got to try these great looking clubs, bucket list irons. I’m a retired aircraft machinist 65 male with only playing the best comfortable sharp impressive golf anywhere I go. Thanks for your time and efforts on making this old boy a happy man. Peace n chicken grease 3500 N. E. Loop 820, 2015B, Fort Worth, Texas 76137

Could the low spin also be contributed from lower swing speed?

Always a possibility Mat. When I changed shafts after a fitting, spin was excellent.

What we say...

Cobra golf’s king tour, cb and mb irons use an industry-leading forging process to deliver consistent clubs with an unmatched soft feel and precision shaping for better players..

The family of players’ irons sees a traditional forged muscleback in the King MB, a compact muscle cavity back in the CB, and a technical cavity back in the King Tour to ensure there’s a club for all types of better golfer – all three feature highly in our guide to the best golf irons .

The three irons were launched alongside Cobra’s King Tec Utility Iron and King Tec Hybrid , ensuring every golfer’s needs are covered.

Cobra King, MB and CB irons.

Cobra King Irons: The 5-Step Forging Process

Made from 1025 carbon steel, Cobra’s irons go through an additional forging step when compared to many other manufacturers, which they say allows them to produce more precise forged golf irons .

The forging process for all three King irons begins by heating carbon steel billets to 1,200ºC, before the billets are rough forged three times. These first three steps see the metal bent and forged to form the rough shaping of an iron head.

The first three stages of Cobra's 5-Step Forging process.

Step four sees 1,200 tons of pressure applied at 800ºC to each rough clubhead, refining the shapes and placing detail lines and logos.

The fourth stage of Cobra's 5-Step Forging process.

The fifth and final step sees each iron head subjected to 2,000 tons of pressure at 700ºC to form a uniform and isotropic internal grain structure. Once cooled, the clubheads are then polished and prepped for the faces and grooves to be precision milled using a CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machine.

The fifth stage of Cobra's 5-Step Forging process.

But what does the five-step process provide that four-step methods don’t? Cobra say it creates more precise shaping, more precise and flatter clubfaces, tighter weight tolerances, improved consistency of loft and lies, improved face thickness consistency, improved aesthetics, and significantly enhanced feel at impact.

According to Cobra’s research, feel is the most important characteristic that better players (Tour to seven handicaps) look for in their irons (28%), followed by distance (21%), forgiveness (18%), control (16%), and ease-to-hit (13%).

The three irons complete an impressive King family that also includes the King Forged Tec and Forged Tec-X irons and the new King Tec Utility Iron and Hybrid.

Ewen Ferguson will use the Cobra King CB and MB irons.

Cobra King Irons: How the three models differ

All three of the new players’ irons target the more advanced golfer and you’ll see them in bags of Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland and Ewen Ferguson in 2023.

The Cobra King CB and MB irons have been designed to work as a ‘flow combo’ set, with the stock set coming with CB 4-6-irons and MB in 7-PW. That set makeup provides more forgiveness in the longer irons and more precision in the shorter irons.

They feature the most compact shapes in the King family and have all the attributes a better player seeks – thinner toplines, minimal offset, thinner soles, and shorter blade lengths. The forging process ensures the CB and MB feature perfectly centered CG locations without the need for additional Tungsten.

See why the Cobra King MB is one of the best blade golf clubs in our huge head-to-head test.

Cobra King MB iron.

Cobra say the CB iron, with its more forgiving cavity back shape with slightly more offset, and the traditional MB muscle back, offer players a variety of customizable set configurations to fit their gapping and aesthetic preferences.

Both the CB and MB are available as full sets in 3i-GW through custom fitting.

The King Tour blends soft feel and playability with enhanced distance and forgiveness. Unlike the CB and MB irons which are one-piece forgings, the Tour irons feature an aluminum medallion, and a TPU insert in the back cavity but still have a solid feel.

The Cobra King Tour iron.

CNC undercuts in the back cavity of each iron allow weight to be repositioned from high center to lower center and heel and toe areas of the clubhead, creating improved launch conditions and more forgiveness on off-center hits.

These cavities progress from deeper in the long irons for enhanced stability, to shallower in the short irons for enhanced control.  To improve feel, each CNC undercut is filled with a soft TPU material and topped with an aluminum co-molded medallion, which both damp vibration for a more pleasing sound and feel at impact.

Rickie Fowler will use the Cobra King Tour irons.

The shaping of the Tour irons is progressively more compact than the King Forged TEC model, featuring a thinner topline, and reduced offset. The updated Tour shape also features a slightly shortened blade length than the previous King Tour MIM irons to inspire improved control and workability.

The Tour irons, which have a satin nickel chrome finish, have two-degree stronger lofts than the CB and MB irons for more distance. The stock set includes seven irons (4-PW), but a 3-iron and Gap Wedge are also available.

The Cobra King Tour’s looks, feel and performance make it a strong choice among our pick of the best players’ irons in golf.

Verdict: Cobra King Tour iron (2023)

It was a seriously long time before the King Tour that a Cobra iron last bagged top honors in a TG players’ iron test. But the simple, elegant Tour is so good I feel it’s now worthy of featuring among our top 10 players’ iron for the second year in a row. The King Tour has helped nurse Rickie Fowler’s game back into shape and it’s the sort of model the brand hasn’t really offered for a few years.

The five-times forged heads feel super soft. There’s a tiny bit of tech built-in with variable depth milled pockets in the shallow cavity backs, which add a fraction more playability on the long irons and increased flight control on the scoring clubs. Like any good players’ iron, the head shape is really attractive, there are no awkward areas that unduly draw the eye, making this an understated model for decent players who are happy to let their golf do the talking.

The Cobra King Tour Iron cavity back detail and shape at address

Data tends to be less important within the players’ category, as decisions are more often made on subjectives like sound, feel, and looks. The Tour did itself no harm though by producing an above-average carry distance for the category, while other metrics stuck stubbornly around the average mark.

As the King Tour enters its second year I feel it’s still got a lot to offer as Cobra is now a proper player within the forged iron market. The Tour sits alongside the King MB blade and tour-level King CB plus there’s a hollow body Forged Tec and Forged Tec X, all of which can be dialed in individually to create your own perfect combo set.

If you’re considering forged irons in 2024 Cobra’s cracking line-up deserves to be checked out.

Data comparison: How does the Cobra King Tour compare to leading competitor players’ irons in 2024?

The five irons in the Cobra King family.

Which Cobra King iron is right for me?

With five irons in the Cobra King family, there are models to suit everyone from Tour stars like Rickie Fowler to 20-handicappers.

The King MB and CB are for better players playing off three and below, while the King Tour will suit everyone from seven-handicappers to Tour players.

The King Forged Tec is more suited single-figure players (0-10), with the Forged Tec-X for the mid-handicap player (10-20).

Beyond that, and outside of the King family, Cobra’s new AeroJet iron targets the 10-25-handicap market.

Have a look at our guide to the best Cobra drivers for your game for more analysis.

What Cobra say about the new King irons

“The five-step forging process is critical to both the feel produced at impact by each of our new King irons as well the consistency of performance,” said Tom Olsavsky, Vice President of R&D for Cobra Golf.

“Players who desire the feel of forged want a soft sensation at impact rather than one that’s overly crisp, and our process delivers the desired sensation. But forgings can also be lacking in consistency due to the challenges involved in the forging process, all of which we’ve improved on by creating forged irons with superior precision from clubhead to clubhead.

“Players who favor forged irons now have the option to enjoy all the benefits of a forging with the consistency normally associated with cast products.”

Cobra King Tour 2023 Irons Review – Are They Forgiving & Good for High Handicappers?

king tour cobra

“With the new King Tour irons, Cobra is making an intriguing bid on premium player’s irons.”

On the one hand, we learn that Cobra utilized a refined 5-step forging process for these irons. So it would seem that they are attempting to take on companies like Mizuno and Srixon for a bid on the premium iron space.

On the other hand, we know that the Cobra King Tour irons have a tour cavity back design in order to make them more accessible to lesser skilled players. In any case, the Cobra King Tour irons are very interesting so we were ecstatic when we were able to get our hands on them for this review. Find out everything you need to know about these new irons in the following article.

Cobra King Tour Irons Overview

“Cobra claims that the King Tour irons are a step above the King Forged TEC irons in terms of performance.”

Of course, a lot of this has to do with the new forging process that gives the Cobra King Tour irons a softer feel and allows for a higher degree of trajectory and spin control. But Cobra has also shortened the length of the blade and thinned out the top line.

However, these are still technically cavity back irons. The cavity isn’t very deep; but it’s there. As such, it creates an undercut which should make the Cobra King Tour irons a bit more forgiving than your average tour blades.

CNC Milled Undercuts

“The rear undercuts have been precision milled to dial in launch for each club in the set.”

The precision milling of the undercuts also allowed for a very specific amount of weight to be placed in the head to optimize CG for every club in the set. Cobra really wanted to optimize performance of the entire set so they spared no effort in the manufacturing of these irons.

5-Step Forging Process

king tour cobra

The Cobra King Tour irons have undergone a 5-step forging process. They have been forged from 1025 carbon steel which is exceptionally soft. Indeed, the Cobra King Tour irons played very softly for our testers who were able to work the ball beautifully with almost every iron in the set.

TPU Inserts

The tour cavities have been filled with TPU in order to dampen vibration and give them an even smoother feel.

We really loved the feel of these irons – even mis-hits didn’t feel so punishing to the wrists and arms. The TPU layer is topped with a thin aluminum badge to keep with the aesthetic of the irons and further dampen harsh vibration.

Sound & Feel

“One of the best things about these new irons is how they feel.”

The 1025 forged carbon steel coupled with the TPU inserts gives them an incredibly soft feel that would rival any Mizuno iron. The sound is a bit muted, surprisingly. When you pure the ball, you get a deep satisfying “thud.” However, when you mis-hit by just a hair, the deep sound turns into a shallow clink.

The Cobra King Tour Irons Overall

“These irons have a premium feel; but will be difficult for 15-20 handicap players to wield effectively.”

They are not the most forgiving irons in the new King lineup which includes the King Forged TEC, King CB and King MB irons. In fact, if you are looking for the most forgiving irons in the new Cobra King iron lineup, those would be the King Forged TEC irons.

However, they are supremely workable and players with faster swing speeds should have no trouble getting good distance out of them.

Cobra King Tour Irons

Category: Tour Cavity Irons

Cobra king tour irons – first impressions.

king tour cobra

“At first swing, you can feel how soft these irons are.”

In the bag, they have a really clean look with a slightly raised toe area. Of course, they don’t look like they will be hugely forgiving in the bag or behind the ball. But that’s not what Cobra was going for with these irons. At a glance, you can barely tell that these are cavity back irons and we think that was probably by design.

The minimal offset pretty much obscures any sign of an undercut at address so what you’re left with is a clean look that better players will surely prefer. The top line is pretty thin and the sole is too so you can barely see it at address. Still, we were a bit surprised at the launch angles we were achieving with the longer  irons. They provide great height to help stick greens from distance.

Cobra King Tour Irons Selling Points

  • Excellent workability
  • Remarkably soft feel
  • More forgiving than the King MB and King CB models
  • CNC milled undercuts
  • 5-step forging process
  • Stock KBS Taper steel shafts

Who Are the Cobra King Tour Irons for?

king tour cobra

“So are the Cobra King Tour irons good for high handicappers? Not exactly.”

Higher handicap players are likely to struggle with the short length of the blade and the almost complete absence of offset. Still, these are cavity back irons so there is some modicum of forgiveness. But single-digit handicap players will probably be the only players to take advantage of this splash of forgiveness that Cobra has provided.

Single-digit handicap players will love how easy it is to bend the ball with these irons. The progressive nature of the set is also set up to optimize distance, launch and control in each iron. Launch is actually pretty high so better players will actually be able to stay on the green with their #6 and #7 irons.

These are definitely not game improvement irons; but they look, feel and perform amazingly as player’s performance irons.

Cobra King Irons Review (NEW 2023 Tour, CB & MB Irons)

  • by Stuart Bell
  • January 13, 2023 June 3, 2023

Cobra King Irons

New Cobra King irons have been launched for 2023 with the Tour and CB and MB models revealed. How does the latest generation perform?

Joining the new Aerojet series also unveiled by Cobra, the premium King series have been given a makeover with more performance gains in the latest version.

The new King irons feature the bladed Tour irons, a CB (Cavity Back) model and a MB (Muscle Back) with a unique five-stage forging process key to crafting these stunning irons.

The CB and MB irons can be purchased as an individual set or as a flow set with cavity backs in the longer irons and muscle backs in the shorter irons.

We take a look at what is new, how each model differs and what they can bring to your game in 2023.

What Cobra says about the 2023 King irons:

“The KING family of irons are the pinnacle of craftsmanship, developed with an industry leading 5th strike in the forging process for exceptional feel and precision ball-striking that better players demand.

“While traditional irons utilize a 4 step forging process, the KING irons add a fifth step to deliver exceptional soft feel that better players demand.

“Each iron is crafted and 5-step forged from 1025 carbon steel for a more uniform grain structure and precise shaping.

“Explosive distance combined with soft feel and a touch of added forgiveness makes KING Tour our most playable Players’ iron to date.

“The CB/MB combo flow-set prioritizes precise shot-making in your short irons with added stability and forgiveness in the long irons. Ensuring the highest level of performance as you progress through the bag.

“The CB/MB Irons are available in multiple set configurations depending on your gapping and aesthetic preferences.

“A combo set flows from more forgiving, cavity back long irons (4-6 iron) to muscle-back short irons (7- PW) designed for scoring precision.”

Cobra King Tour 2023 Irons Specs & Design

The King Tour irons are Cobra’s stylish cavity back design aimed a elite players looking for workability with forgiveness.

They are the most forgiving of the range thanks to a TPU insert in the cavity, and CNC milled undercuts in the back of the irons. The undercuts have allowed weight to be moved and CG lowered for a more effective launch angle.

Cobra King Tour Irons

The Tour irons have a more compact design than Cobra’s Forged TEC irons , including a thinner topline, less offset and a shorter length of blade the MIM irons that preceded them.

Cobra have introduce a unique five step forging process in the creation of the King Tours for an incredibly soft feel from the 1025 carbon steel construction.

The Tour model is available in 3-iron (19 degrees) to Gap Wedge (48 degrees).

Why We Like It

Sometimes multiple materials are used to mask deficiencies in one area, but not so here. By mixing materials, Cobra brings the kind of raw power irons in this category need. The neat trick, however, is doing so in a pleasing shape that doesn’t scrimp on feel thanks to a light, soft foam inside the 1025 carbon-steel clubhead. The muscle-back shape belies the hollow construction and the thin face delivers significant ball speed with a higher launch. A 20-gram tungsten toe weight is positioned so that the center of gravity is more in line with the center of the face to deliver a sweet feel on center strikes.

Performance

Look / sound / feel, golf digest logo hot list players feedback.

Ratings are based on players’ assessments in three key performance areas.

Ball Flight

Playability.

The ball rockets off the face with a high launch. Expect to gain distance with these clubs. Has a decreased loft in the face but still comes off super high.

Has a dynamic rip through impact. Aggressive profile but still has loads of stability. Shots stay on line. Produces an effortless, drawing ball flight.

Looks good at address. Slightly firmer feel at impact with a satisfying click. Good turf interaction without digging. Center-face contact gets good carry and speed. Mis-hits hold the line.

Why Impact Is Critical to Your Iron Play

Consistent shot shape requires one skill above all others: the ability to make flush contact with the ball. It’s the No. 1 fundamental in golf, and without it, this game can be an eternal mystery. Here, Sean Hogan, one of Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in Florida, helps you improve your impact from tee to green.

Best Cobra Golf Irons

The Quick List

Best looking, best for slicers, best for beginners, best for distance, best compact distance.

  • How we test
  • How to choose

When it comes to searching for golf irons for your bag, it's crucial that you find a set that is best for your game. At the end of the day, they're the clubs that are likely to be in your bag the longest and the clubs which will set you back the most money. Many manufacturers fall under the category of making the best golf irons , with one of those companies being Cobra, which produces some outstanding models, as shown by some of the review ratings below.

Its irons cater for a wide range of abilities and even rival the best Callaway irons and best Mizuno irons on the market, models that are used by the professionals out on the world's biggest Tours. After extensive testing , I've narrowed down the best models from the company and suggest the ones that might be best suited for your game.

Cobra King Tour Iron

For the low handicapper, this is one of the best all-round packages we’ve tested this year. Some may hit the ball too far versus their traditionally lofted set.

Read more below

Cobra Darkspeed Iron

An excellent all-round distance iron. Cobra has produced a high-performing iron, packed with distance and a surprisingly good feel. We really enjoyed the dark finish.

Cobra Air-X Irons

A mightily impressive lightweight iron set that is easy to launch and forgiving. Users should look up to see a high and consistent draw-biased ball flight with a springy, stable feel off the face.

Cobra Aerojet Irons

We rate this as a stable and solid iron, with a powerful feel that is consistently long. We also found a very forgiving centre, making it a strong choice as a forgiving club.

Cobra 2022 King Forged Tec Iron

The new slimmed down King Forged Tec manages to offer even more firepower for the competent golfer seeking a compact, distance-orientated iron.

Cobra King Forged Tec X Iron

If you’re a mid to high handicapper that wants to play a cool-looking iron that looks like it is aimed at a good player, this is certainly a model to consider.

Cobra King Tour Iron Review

Cobra King Tour Iron

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

A model that is one of our absolute favorites in 2023, the Cobra King Tour is one of the best all-round packages we’ve tested this year. An iron aimed at low handicappers , it has a 1025c forged body and a CNC Milled undercut, which removes weight from the center and repositions it to the heel and toe. You’ll also see the TPU insert, which dampens vibrations for a softer feel.

The result in testing was the feel off the face was livelier than most compact cavity back irons married with a dense, soft feel at impact. We also quite liked the ball flight too, it came out low with a healthy amount of spin, which gave us really good control of the trajectory as well as plenty of stopping power into firm greens.

Additionally the forgiveness was excellent given the level of player this iron is aimed at, and visually this iron is a stunner. The clean lines and classic profile really suits the eye at address and the slightly larger dimensions means it inspires a little more confidence than most tour-played irons.

Photo of the Cobra Darkspeed iron

Cobra Darkspeed Iron

Cobra has produced some exceptional  game improvement irons  in recent years including the  Aerojet  and  King LTDx  models that excelled when it came to distance, so we were excited for the Darkspeed.

Firstly the charcoal finish looks really sleek and sophisticated, and  down behind the ball the shaping of the head is nice too. Nothing too angular, just some lovely soft curves and not a crazy amount of offset. The dark colorway again minimizes a decently thick top line.

In terms of the tech, Cobra is telling us that the Darkspeed iron is filled with a lighter foam material than the Aerojet iron and we think the changes internally within the clubhead have created an exceptionally good feel for irons in this category. The flight was strong as we would expect from a pretty strong lofted set up and as a result spin levels were relatively low. Any mis-struck shots retained a really good level of ball speed which was a real positive too.

Overall we  certainly haven’t tested any irons in this category that have impressed us more in terms of 2024 releases, so if the charcoal finish is something that appeals to your eye, you most certainly won’t be disappointed with the performance.

The Cobra Air-X Irons on a green background

Cobra Air-X Irons

These Cobra Air-X Irons are some of the best golf irons for seniors , as the lightweight and forgiving feel help those who want to swing the club faster for longer carries. Beginning with the looks, the Air-X features lots of design elements and flashes of red that will pop off the shelf. Down at address, the thick topline and wide sole make it inviting to hit and there is also a generous amount of offset in the seven iron to compliment the draw bias in the head. This helps serial slicers overcome their most common miss.

There is also a significant amount of forgiveness in the iron which also makes it a great iron for low handicap golfers. In testing, I found a soft draw seemed easy to replicate and the feel off the face was lively and consistent off what felt like a large area. Even shots struck quite low on the face had ample launch, thanks to the deep undercut design and the fact the lofts aren’t super strong.

Cobra Aerojet Iron on the course

Cobra Aerojet Iron

Cobra has fine-tuned what they achieved in the impressive Radspeed and King LTDx irons in their latest upgrade, the Aerojet. And having recently got our hands on this iron, I think it might be one of the best distance irons on the market. Visually, the Aerojet boasts several pops of color and a sleek carbon fiber back plate that does add a premium feel to the club. That nestles in behind one of the club's newest features, the PWR Bridge. This is a fully suspended weight on its body that allows the face to be more flexible, while lowering the CG to help reduce spin and improve the launch angles the club delivers.

The Aerojet comes with a generous head size that inspires confidence at address, and when talking about consistency, this iron was hard to fault. Whether I struck it low or high on the face, the ball still travelled well, something we'd expect from the most forgiving irons . The feel was lively but delivered a slightly subdued sound, thanks to the polymer that fills the club head's cavity which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. It does a great job of maintaining the feeling of power while dumbing down any harsh vibrations that often crop up when the ball is struck off center.

Well struck shots carried well and I really enjoyed the distance the club gave me on the course and when testing it out with the the Foresight sports GCQuad launch monitor against the LTDx. Overall, it is a fast and fun-to-hit iron that has an explosive feel.

The Cobra 2022 King Forged Tec Iron in action

Cobra 2022 King Forged Tec Iron

With these King Forged Tec Irons that is certainly the case, as stunning, clean looks play wingman to premium performance. Featuring a new five step forged body and face, along with the tungsten weighting inside the hollow head, I was blown away with how well it performs as an incredibly powerful feel offers up a more metallic sound akin to that of a metalwood. Part of the improvement in feel can be attributed to the stability, where you don't get any harsh vibrations in your hands unless you really mishit one.

Aesthetically, it is clean and elegant and, when down at address, provides a streamlined look, which will attract the attention of many better players. The new five step forged body and face along with the tungsten weighting inside the hollow head did combine to produce some excellent yardages off the tee. Cobra didn’t need to reinvent the wheel with the new King Forged Tec iron because of how good the outgoing model was but its clear the refinements on show here make this an excellent club you should definitely check out if you're looking to send the ball further with your irons.

The Cobra King Forged Tec X Iron on the course

Cobra King Forged Tec X Iron

The Cobra King Forged Tec X is a new entry within Cobra’s iron line up and said to open up a brand new ‘players’ game-improvement’ category with its strong lofts and shrunken profile. Providing neat and tidy looks behind the ball, it is undoubtedly one of the most compact  game improvement irons  on the market. What's more, it has a fairly thick topline that will inspire confidence at address.

Away from its looks, it has a very springy feel off the face with a relatively clicky sound, but the flight is best described as flat or penetrating. It is also consistent, thanks to the stability in the head, with shot shaping relatively easy and, because it is forgiving, you achieve ample distance, even on off-centre strikes.

How we test irons

Our testing for golf irons is built upon a comprehensive process combined with the knowledge and expertise of the Golf Monthly test team. As far as the specific procedure goes, before testing, the team will usually attend product launches and meet with the manufacturer's R&D experts to understand the new technology.

When it comes to testing , we often head indoors first to try the irons in a controlled environment. This usually takes place on an indoor simulator at Foresight Sports, with premium balls and the GCQuad launch monitor. Our outside testing normally takes place at West Hill Golf Club, a course with top-notch practice facilities.

We think it is vitally important to do both and continue to test the irons so they have been comprehensively put to the test in different conditions. It should also be mentioned that manufacturers cannot pay for a good review and we make our conclusions from the testing and our experiences. This is because we strive to give the best reviews possible so you can get a greater understanding of the irons themselves.

How to choose new irons

Buying a new set of irons can be a difficult and sometimes overwhelming purchase. The market is crowded with a ton of different types of clubs that are all suitable to different kinds of players and can offer a ton of different features. But don't fret. We've set out a list of key considerations below that you should think about when purchasing your next set of irons.

1. Your Handicap And Ability

This is probably the most important first step: knowing which type of iron best suits your game. This is by no means gospel, but higher handicappers tend to use cavity back irons that offer maximum forgiveness in a larger iron head, while mid-low handicappers tend to use more  bladed irons  that are forged, offer more feel and control but less forgiveness.

You'll know how good or perhaps not so good your ball striking tends to be, so make sure you invest in a set of irons that matches where your game is out now, not where you'd ideally want it to be. We have great guides that go into more detail on this, so check out our guide on the  most forgiving irons  if you're a higher handicapper and our guide on the  best irons for mid-handicappers .

This will be a major factor in anyone's decision of what irons to go for. As you'll have seen in this list, the price can vary dramatically between irons. Typically, for a set of cavity back irons - those that provide most distance and forgiveness - you'll be looking between $600-$800 for a set of seven irons.

This obviously can fluctuate between brands, and we've highlighted in this list the ones we think give the best value for money in this category. The price jumps quite significantly when looking at the forged and bladed options - up to and above $1000 - but this is par for the course and you'll be getting a high quality, premium product in return.

3. Custom Fit

This is probably the most essential part of the iron buying process, no matter the irons you're after or how good you are at the game. A custom fit session will make sure you get the right flex and length of shaft, correct lie angle and correct iron head for your game, meaning you'll finish with the  best golf clubs  that are as suitable as possible for you out on course.

Custom fits can be a daunting process if you're a true beginner or you aren't that confident hitting golf balls in front of people, but they're a vital part of the club buying process. We recommend having a shortlist of three or four iron heads you like the look of before entering a custom fit and then whittling them down to the best for your game during the custom fit process. Custom fits are provided by a number of golf retailers or club professionals at your local golf club.

4. Shaft Flex

Shaft flex is also an important point to consider when purchasing your next set of irons. Depending on your swing speed, you need to think about the kind of shaft you're playing with in order to get the club that suits you the best. If you're a faster swinger, you might want to buy a set of clubs that have a stiff shaft flex to help you rip through each shot. Equally, if you're a slower swinger, you might want to buy clubs with a more flexible set of shafts in order to help you generate ball speeds.

While Cobra are one of the best golf iron manufacturers on the market, it's also worth looking at what other companies have on offer. So for that reason, why not take a look at our guides to the best Titleist golf irons, the best TaylorMade golf irons , and the best Ping golf irons .

Do any professionals use Cobra?

A number of professionals use Cobra, like Bryson DeChambeau, Rickie Fowler and Lexi Thompson as well as Ewen Ferguson across the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LPGA Tour.

Are Cobra good irons?

Quite simply, yes, Cobra produces some of the best golf irons that money can buy, with the brand catering for a range of different players from tour players, low and high handicappers.

What sort of irons are best for low handicap players?

As your irons can be some of the most unforgiving clubs to play with, it is wise to get a playable and easy to use set that deliver excellent forgiveness off the tee and off the deck. If you're a low handicap player, look out for a set of cavity backed irons that have a wide sole and a large club head which will inspire confidence at address.

Just FYI, these will be at Club Champion by end of month. Same with the ZX7 MKII and new TM line (some of them may already be in - not sure).

One length??

I hit the new King Tour last night. I’m a bit surprised they’re available in stores already given the upcoming pre-release, but won’t complain.

i like the head shape. A tad larger than T100, similar to Pro223. I got good distance out of them, spin seemed a bit on the lower end but still acceptable (will be 500rpm higher outside and can be managed with a spinnier ball).

feel was good, but I actually liked the MIM Tour feel better (even though it was not forged). It’s definitely on par with the Pro223, but not the softest I’ve ever hit. Feel wise I like T100 less than the Cobra.

Any jumpiness to them?

Was your comparison to T100 or T100S? I ask because the T100 7iron loft is 34* while the new Cobra Tour Iron 7iron is supposed to be 32*, which is on par with the 223 and T100S.

7 hours ago, Red4282 said: Any jumpiness to them?

no, they seemed very solid and distance was super repeatable. Carry on 5 shots was all between 165-170.

It was to t100. I looked at distance relative to loft and all performed as expected. Had a bit more of a left tendency with the t100, cobra straight, mizuno slightly right - probably due to lie angle.

The Cobra definitely fits right into that bracket, with ZX7 and P770 as other options.

Thanks

Gosh there’s a lot to like about these irons. I’m only a year removed from having Cobra irons in the bag and they might be making a quick return. Is anyone else having a hard time justifying the CB’s when Fowler is playing a full set of Tours or is it just me?

Are these Tours somewhat similar to i230s, design/tech-wise?

Cobra seems to be talking in its marketing about the TPU in them to help sound/feel, much like Ping touts elastomer in their i2XX series. The insert goes in a similar spot. It looks like those inserts are similarly positioned and they both have a badge covering them.

But it's hard to tell based on the pictures how their size compares.

Yes similar, but someone correct me if im wrong, tungsten in pings, none in cobras. Cobras forged, pings not.

Yeah I always say I want to try OneLength, then they don’t make it in an iron I would try.

For those in the know, or better yet whom have test drove this new series where does the new King Tour fit into the lineup?  You have the MB and CB...pretty standard definition.  Then you have the Tour sitting between the CB and the Tech.  Do they really need this iron?  Or is it Cobra's players distance iron?  It wouldn't seem to be the case as Ricky is playing the Tours.  Also, the marketing material indicated that the Tour is targeted at the 10-scratch player.  Am I missing something?

Also, how would it compart to the Srixon ZX7?  As forgiving/not?

Thanks to all, please enlighten me.

Forged Tec are hollow and with stronger lofts (29.5 vs 32). Tour is solid construction, but more forgiving than CB and slightly larger profile.

Tour to me is similar to ZX7, Mizuno Pro 223, Titleist T100(s).

Ordered a set of the King Tours today.  Will be pulling the shafts and installing a set of Recoil Prototypes I've been looking to try in something.
