“You must visit the festival of democracy in the mother of democracy”

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi addressed the G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meet held in Goa via video message today.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister invoked the spirit of Incredible India and said that the tourism ministers rarely get a chance to be tourists themselves even though they are handling a sector worth over two trillion dollars globally. Noting that the G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meet is taking place in Goa, one of the major tourist attractions in India, the Prime Minister urged the dignitaries to take out some time from their serious discussions and explore the natural beauty and the spiritual side of Goa.

The Prime Minister said that India’s approach to tourism is based on the ancient Sanskrit verse ‘Atithi Devo Bhavah’ which means ‘Guest is God’. Shri Modi emphasized that tourism is not just about sightseeing but it is an immersive experience. “Be it Music or Food, Arts or Culture, the diversity of India is truly majestic”, the Prime Minister continued, “From the high Himalayas to dense forests, dry deserts to beautiful beaches, adventure sports to meditation retreats, India has something for everyone.” The Prime Minister informed that India during its G-20 presidency is organizing nearly 200 meetings in 100 different locations all over the country making every experience different from the other. “If you ask your friends who have already visited India for these meetings, I am sure that no two experiences will be alike”, he added.

The Prime Minister underlined that India’s efforts in the tourism sector are centered on preserving its rich heritage while creating a world-class infrastructure for tourism. Noting that India attracts pilgrims of every major religion of the world, the Prime Minister emphasized the development of spiritual tourism as one of the focus areas. He informed that the infrastructure upgrade in the eternal city of Varanasi, one of the major spiritual centers, led to a ten-fold increase in pilgrims taking the number to 70 million today. He also underlined that India is creating new tourist attractions and gave the example of the Statue of Unity, the tallest statue in the world, which attracted about 2.7 million tourists within a year of its inauguration. In the last nine years, the Prime Minister said, we have placed special emphasis on developing the entire ecosystem of tourism in the country. “From transport infrastructure to the hospitality sector to skill development, and even in our visa systems, we have kept the tourism sector as a focal point of our reforms”, Shri Modi said. He highlighted that the hospitality sector has great potential for employment generation, social inclusion and economic progress while employing more women and youth compared to the other sectors. The Prime Minister expressed happiness that India is also recognizing the relevance of the tourism sector for the speedy achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the five inter-connected priority areas of Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skill Development, Tourism MSMEs, and Destination Management reflect the priorities of India as well as the Global South. Shri Modi suggested greater use of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and augmented reality to drive innovation and highlighted that India is working towards artificial intelligence enabling real-time translation of various languages spoken in the country. He expressed confidence that collaboration among governments, entrepreneurs, investors and academia can accelerate such technological implementation in the tourism sector. The Prime Minister also suggested working together to ease business regulations for tourism companies and assist them in increasing their access to finances and investing in skill development.

“Terrorism divides but Tourism unites”, the Prime Minister remarked. He said that tourism has the potential to unite people from all walks of life thereby creating a harmonious society. Shri Modi expressed happiness that a G20 Tourism dashboard is being developed in partnership with UNWTO which will be a first-of-its-kind platform bringing together best practices, case studies and inspiring stories. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the deliberations and the ‘Goa Roadmap’ would multiply the collective efforts to realize tourism’s transformative power. “The motto of India’s G20 Presidency, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ can itself be a motto for global tourism”, he added.

The Prime Minister highlighted the upcoming Sao Joao Festival in Goa and said that India is a land of festivals. Referring to the General Elections to be held next year, the Prime Minister urged the dignitaries to witness the festival of democracy in the mother of democracy where nearly a billion voters will be taking part for over a month re-affirming their abiding faith in democratic values. “With more than a million voting booths, there will be no shortage of places for you to witness this festival in all its diversity”, the Prime Minister said. He concluded the address by extending an invitation to visit India during the festival of democracy.

One of the oldest civilisations in the world, India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences. With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It covers an area of 32, 87,263 sq. km, extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. As the 7th largest country in the world, India stands apart from the rest of Asia, marked off as it is by mountains and the sea, which give the country a distinct geographical entity.

Fringed by the Great Himalayas in the north, it stretches southwards and at the Tropic of Cancer, tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. As you travel the expanse of the country, you are greeted by diverse nuances of cuisines, faiths, arts, crafts, music, nature, lands, tribes, history and adventure sports. India has a mesmeric conflation of the old and the new. As the bustling old bazaars rub shoulders with swanky shopping malls, and majestic monuments accompany luxurious heritage hotels, the quintessential traveller can get the best of both worlds. Head to the mountains, enjoy a beach retreat or cruise through the golden Thar, India has options galore for all.

‘Foreign tourist inflow to India up by four times after pandemic': Union min G Kishan Reddy

During the last eight years, the country has built extensive tourism infrastructure to improve the tourism experience, he said. The central government has drafted a new tourism policy 2023, which provides a "paradigm shift in reimagining our tourism sector in India," Reddy informed the delegates from other countries.

Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy on Wednesday said nearly 69 lakh foreign tourists visited India in 2022, indicating a four-fold increase in the number of arrivals after two years of negative growth during COVID-19 pandemic. Reddy was addressing the Tourism Working Group (TWG) meeting organised at the Tent City in Gujarat's Rann of Kutch as part of India's G20 presidency.

To attract global and domestic investors and expertise, the ministry will organise the first Global Tourism Investment Summit in April 2023 in New Delhi, Reddy said.(Stutterstock)

He said a 'National Tourism Mission' is also being formulated to ensure the digitalisation of the tourism sector in mission mode. "The world faced difficult times during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tourism sector in particular has been severely affected because of COVID-19. But, after two years of negative growth, India received approximately 6.9 million tourists from abroad in 2022.

This is a four-fold increase in the number of arrivals to India," the minister said. The increase in tourist inflow indicates that "our efforts for achieving resilient growth in tourism are progressing in the right direction," he said.

This is the second G20 event in the state after the 'Business 20 Inception' programme held in Gandhinagar last month. More than 100 delegates from India and other participating countries are attending the first TWG meeting. Reddy said the Ministry of Tourism, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is celebrating this year as 'Visit India 2023', focussing on inbound travel to India. "We have 40 UNESCO heritage sites, and we observe more than 1,000 festivals every year," he said.

He said a 'National Tourism Mission' is also being formulated to ensure the digitalisation of the tourism sector in mission mode. "As the first step, the ministry of tourism has set up a national integrated database of the hospitality industry. This is a technology driven system to facilitate digitalisation and promote ease of doing business for the hospitality and tourism sector," said the minister.

To attract global and domestic investors and expertise, the ministry will organise the first Global Tourism Investment Summit in April 2023 in New Delhi, Reddy said. "Also, we are going to organise a Tourism Expo to provide a platform to the industry and to facilitate interaction between buyers and sellers and for sharing of knowledge.

The Ministry will also organise a global conference on MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism in May and an event on Adventure Tourism in June," said Reddy. On the occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel informed the guests that the state government is taking many steps to boost tourism.

"After Gandhi Circuit and Buddh Circuit, we are now developing places which fall under Swami Vivekananda Tourist Circuit. Right before leaving for Chicago to address the World Parliament of Religions, Swami Vivekananda had visited some places in Gujarat. We are developing those places under Vivekananda Circuit," he said. During the day, working sessions will be held on five priority issues, namely green tourism, digitalisation, skills, tourism MSMEs and destination management, as per an official release.

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday launched the Visit India Year 2023 campaign to encourage inbound travel to the country which is currently chairing the G20.

The minister also launched a logo of the campaign that draws inspiration from visual representation of ‘namaste’. The logo represents a “microcosm of the countless stories India holds” — from heritage to gastronomy to our art and our rich wildlife, and its imbibes the country’s philosophy of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’.

In the logo, elements of India’s heritage, its monuments have been depicted, as also modern achievements of India in space and other sectors. It also features the iconic Statue of Unity.

The Tourism Ministry said G20 presidency presets a fantastic opportunity to highlight the country’s tourism offerings. The Visit India Year 2023 campaign is an initiative of the Tourism Ministry.

From showcasing Incredible India visiting delegates to positioning the country as a major travel destination during its year-long presidency, G20 will be the Union Tourism Ministry’s focus area in 2023.

India assumed the presidency of the influential bloc on December 1, setting the tone for the ministry’s calendar this year.

More than 200 meetings will be held across 55 locations, culminating with the annual G20 summit on September 9-10.

The Tourism Ministry is geared up to put its best foot forward and showcase to the guests from different countries the cultural heritage and culinary delights of India.

This year is very crucial for India as it chairs G20, and over 200 meetings will take place at 55 locations, and “over one lakh foreign delegates will visit India this year”, Reddy said after launching the Tourism Ministry’s campaign and its logo.

“Our endeavour will be to showcase our destinations, monuments, culture, festivals to the visiting delegates. A lot of events will be held across India from tourism point of view. Each foreign delegate should return as a cultural ambassador of India, this kind of environment be created, is the vision of our PM,” he said.

Harnessing the momentum created by the “recovery of the global industry”, preferential sentiment from global travellers for exploring India, and building upon the success in growing tourism in India over the years, the ministry is on a “mission to unlock the untapped potential of tourism in India”, making the country a 365-day destination, the ministry said in a statement.

“Encouraging the inbound travel and particularly in the backdrop of India’s G20 presidency, as well as grand celebrations of India@75 — Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of Tourism is celebrating this year as ‘Visit India Year 2023’. The focus is on inbound travel to India, to highlight varied tourism offerings of our country and showcase them to the global tourists,” it said.

The priorities include highlighting the unique tourism offerings of every state by leveraging country’s richness in culture, heritage, spirituality, natural beauty and focusing on promoting diverse categories of tourism like sustainable tourism, rural tourism, medical tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conference and Exhibitions) and others.

The ministry said it is geared up to make “great strides” in improving both the infrastructure and other framework conditions impacting the growth of tourism within the year.

To achieve synergies in the ministry’s efforts and requirements of the tourism sector, the Tourism Ministry is working with all the relevant ministries and government agencies, partners, travel and trade industry, state governments and tourism boards, and key stakeholders which have influence and impact on tourism, the statement said.

The ministry plans to unlock this campaign, by starting at home – inspiring citizens into being India’s ambassadors, as well as through citizen advocacy campaigns across the year in the backdrop of the G20 presidency, leveraging the engagements across the cities hosting G20 meetings, it said.

The Incredible India brand will continue to be “leveraged, embellished, and polished” to match the renewed expectations of travellers around the world, officials said.

The plans for the brand to be supported by a best-in-class digital ecosystem are already in action including a reimagined website that will unbox soul-stirring stories across various travel experience categories that show the many hues of India, speaking to all senses with immersive tech-innovations to offer personalised experience for travellers across the world, it said.

Getting onboard partnerships and collaborations that become the voices of Incredible India – global influencers, opinion shapers, industry leaders, experts on culture and history etc. all with a special focus on rural tourism and sustainable tourism with a spotlight on a modern, progressive India and reactivates the MICE segment to a business-ready India, the ministry said.

In the logo, the ‘namaste’ form is “a colourful medley of the vibrant experiences, illustrious heritage, rich culture, sumptuous delicacies, enchanting wildlife, intricate artforms and a lot more that India stands for. Every icon shown in the logo represents India, in its own unique way”, the ministry said.

The ministry said it is excited to kick-start this “global campaign” to bring about immense positive impact in the tourism sector and appeal all related industries, businesses, and authorities to leverage the momentum to showcase their strengths and “help exhibit a spectacle for the world to witness the incredibleness of India”.
