Local Living Italy—Sorrento

This was a wonderful way to visit the Amalfi coast. The agriturismo owners were so gracious, the food was delicious, the views were spectacular, and the rooms were charming. The tour guide had some challenges with the weather, but worked hard to make sure we had options of fun things to do. This was my retirement celebration trip and it didn’t disappoint.

Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast

This was my first tour and I'm happy to say it exceeded all my expectations. It was exactly the type of holiday I wanted, hiking in beautiful scenery with good company and fabulous food. The food was absolutely fantastic - homemade and some homegrown. The hosts at our accommodations were wonderful and did so much extra for us. Our guide was a perfect for this trip, and she helped make a great itinerary even better. I am already planning my next tour and have recommended this to many people already.

Walking the Amalfi Coast with Exodus Travel was a great experience. The walks were varied, challenging, and gorgeous! Our guide, Veriano, was warm, knowledgeable, and fun! Our group was nice, very encouraging, interesting and funny. Hotel Due Torri was a comfortable haven to return to each day, and the food was good. So glad I did this trip!

Walking with the Gods Tour

Walking with the Gods

We had a great 5-day sailing tour with Sail and experience. The boat was nice and clean. Skipper Anzo was cool and friendly. Organizer Claudia was also kind and helpful. They helped us to arrange transportation between Napoli and the Marina. We sailed along the Amalfi coast, visited Capri, Positano, and Sorrento. The itinerary was well planned so the trip was really relaxing and enjoyable. We were neither rushing to a place nor spending too much time on one spot. The hike on the Path of Gods arranged on the third day was nice. It was an easy hike. Unfortunately it was a foggy day, otherwise the coastline view would be more stunning. Personally will definitely come back to hike on a sunny day in the future. Wish it was a 6-day sail instead of 5-day so we would be able to visit Amalfi and Ravello. Overall great tour and highly recommended. :)

Paths of the Amalfi Coast Tour

  • Self Guided Walking Holidays

Paths of the Amalfi Coast

The location on the Amalfi Coast is fabulous, with challenging but rewarding walks, and it was great to have a single base for the whole week. I was doing self-guided as a solo. There was no visual map, only written instructions, which at times were difficult to follow. I received cursory attention from hotel staff including the head waiter who was apparently my key contact: one of the other waiters was more thoughtful. When I did ask about departing bus timetables which weren’t clear, staff were very off hand - I had to persist to find out relevant information. The room was great - I had a jacuzzi bath. Unfortunately apart from the first and last nights, meals were far below what the information indicated, and even more basic than what I’d cook at home, and I’m not a fancy cook: for example, a bowl of cos lettuce for 4 of 7 nights with a few julienned carrots on one night and no dressing does not rate as a salad. Because I was self guided and solo I was consistently seated alone for dinner. The wifi in the bedroom was hopeless - repeatedly needing to sign in within minutes - but great in the dining area. I made the most of the opportunity and location, but overall, and in comparison to some of my other experiences throughout Europe, not value for money and I’d be reluctant to recommend to others.

Italian Discovery Tour

Italian Discovery

This was my second trip with Eskapas , the first was to Greece and it was wonderful. Italian Discovery trip was very interesting and covered most of sites I wanted to visit. Visited many very historic sites, cities, monuments and many amazing structures such as the Vatican, Rome fountains, Leaning tower of Pisa, so many structures and areas it is hard to name them all, but all amazing. The size of the group was around 35 people and it was winter. Italian cities are full of tourists even in the winter. A few days it was rainy but it didn't bother us a lot. The accommodation, sightseeing were good, and the pizza in Naples was our favorite. Our tour leader Mario was full of energy and explained a lot in the bus. Guides in the cities rushed a lot. I guess they had other group appointment after us. Our driver Tao was top! He was fun and has always been smiling. The only inconvenience the group was too big and some of the customers were rude and taking all the same seats. Overall it is a 5-star experience.

Pompeii with Panoramic Winery Lunch on Vesuvius: Day Trip from Rome

What to know about pompeii / amalfi from our local guides.

What is the history of Pompeii?

In its heyday, Pompeii was an upscale coastal city popular as a vacation destination among wealthy Romans. This, combined with its status as a thriving center of trade and industry on the Mediterranean, made it a vibrant and bustling city that was home to around 12,000 residents.

Today, however, Pompeii is remembered as the site of ancient history’s greatest documented natural disaster. The devastating eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed Pompeii and the surrounding towns and villages. An estimated 16,000 people died as a result—2,000 of whom perished in the city of Pompeii—and tens of thousands of residents of the region were displaced.

The disaster left Pompeii buried under 20 feet of volcanic ash for hundreds of years until the first excavation efforts began in the 18th century. The quick burial of the city has provided modern archaeologists with a unique snapshot of Roman life. Pompeii’s well-preserved ruins have revealed intricate details about the architecture, culture, and lifestyle of the inhabitants during that time, making it a fascinating visit and a must-do on any Italy itinerary.

To fully make the most of your time in Pompeii, book a guided tour with an archaeologist . The ruins can be difficult to decipher on your own, and the facts and stories you’ll hear from an expert who has dedicated their life to studying the site will make your experience that much more meaningful.

Is it possible to take a Pompeii day trip from Rome?

Short on time in Italy? You’re in luck—taking a day trip to Pompeii from Rome is incredibly doable. That said, travel logistics in southern Italy can be tricky to figure out for the uninitiated, which is why we recommend booking an organized tour that will handle all the details for you.

Our Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Driv e combines an insightful visit to Pompeii with a drive along the jaw-dropping Amalfi Coast and a stop in picturesque Positano. This experience offers the most complete view of this unmissable corner of Italy without the hassle of getting there on your own.

Prefer a more food-focused experience? Our Pompeii with Panoramic Winery Lunch on Vesuvius: Day Trip from Rome includes a visit to a family-run winery on the slopes of the infamous volcano following your guided visit of Pompeii. Stroll through the vines and sit down to a homemade farm-to-table Italian lunch, complete with wine pairings and a guided tasting.

What are the most important Pompeii ruins?

While you could easily spend days at Pompeii and still not see it all, these sites provide a unique insight into the daily life, architecture, and art of the ancient Roman world.

  • Temple of Apollo : One of the oldest and most important religious structures in Pompeii, dating back to the second century BC.
  • House of the Vettii : A well-preserved Roman villa famous for its intricate frescoes. This stunning home made headlines in 2022 when it was re-opened to the public following decades of restoration work, and is a firm favorite on our Complete Pompeii Experience .
  • Lupanar : The most famous brothel in Pompeii, known for its erotic paintings, is one of the best-preserved examples of a Roman brothel.
  • House of the Tragic Poet : Known for the iconic "Beware of Dog" mosaic and other beautiful artworks.
  • Forum of Pompeii : The political, commercial, and social hub of the city.
  • House of the Faun : The largest house in Pompeii, home to the "Dancing Faun" statue and the Alexander Mosaic.
  • Villa of the Mysteries : Famous for its well-preserved wall frescoes depicting the initiation rites (or "mysteries") of the Dionysian cult.
  • Stabian Baths : The oldest and one of the most complete bath complexes in Pompeii.

How long should I spend in Pompeii?

You’ll need at least half a day to ensure you see the city’s highlights, which will be plenty of time if you’re based in southern Italy. If you’re visiting Pompeii from Rome , plan for a full-day outing.

Pompeii is a vast archaeological site with a lot to see and it can be quite tiring to explore, especially in the hot sun. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sunscreen.

When is the best time to visit Pompeii?

In terms of weather, the spring and fall months offer pleasant temperatures that are warm but not excessively hot. The fall season has the added benefit of fewer tourist crowds.

While summer can be hot and crowded, this can be the perfect time to visit Pompeii if you’re looking to combine your experience with the nearby Amalfi Coast and its breathtaking beaches. Small businesses in many towns such as Positano close during the low season, but in the summertime, you’ll have plenty of options for shopping and dining.

Winter sees fewer crowds in Pompeii, allowing you to explore the ruins in relative peace. The quieter atmosphere allows for a more immersive experience that lets you feel the history and mystery of the ancient city.

How do I get to Pompeii?

If you’re already in southern Italy, reaching Pompeii by train is easy and effective. The Circumvesuviana train runs to Pompeii from both Naples (Porta Nolana and Garibaldi stations) and Sorrento. Trains depart hourly (occasionally more frequently during peak times) and take 30 minutes from Sorrento or 35–40 minutes from Naples. Ticket prices vary depending on your starting point, but will set you back less than €3 to get to Pompeii. Tickets must be purchased in-person at the station and cannot be booked online. Get off the train at the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station.

You can also reach Pompeii by train from Rome. The high-speed Frecciarossa train will get you from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale in just over an hour. From there, you can easily transfer to the Circumvesuviana train at nearby Garibaldi station in Naples and make your way to Pompeii as described above. However, to take the hassle out of your Italy vacation, consider booking a guided day trip from Rome to Pompeii complete with private round-trip transportation.

Pompeii Tours

Tours to explore the ruins of Pompeii: visit with a guide, on your own, or an all-inclusive tour with transfer

A tour of Pompeii is a must during your vacation in Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast. The best-preserved ancient Roman city on earth will captivate you with its villas, streets, baths, and shops from thousands of years ago. Getting to Pompeii from Positano isn't easy, so opt for a guided tour that includes a transfer to avoid the stress and crowds of public transportation.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to see pompeii.

It would take more than a day to see the entire vast ruins of Pompeii. The minimum amount of time you should set aside to visit a few houses and the Roman Forum in the heart of the ancient city is two hours. More than three or four hours can be too tiring, especially in the summer with soaring temperatures and little shade.

How do I get to Pompeii and Herculaneum from the Amalfi Coast?

There is no direct public transportation from the Amalfi Coast to Pompeii or Herculaneum. You need to reach Sorrento and take the Circumvesuviana train from there. Taking a tour that includes transportation from Positano or Amalfi is a much less stressful and time-consuming option.

Can I see both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day?

Yes, though we don't recommend doing so. By trying to fit both sites in one day, you would have to rush your visits. Instead, see these two archaeological treasures on two separate days to explore at a slower pace.

15 Best Pompeii Tours

Pompeii is a unique historic site in that in an ironic twist of fate, the catastrophe that decimated the citizens of the unsuspecting town is also responsible for the near-perfect preservation of many things that would have otherwise been destroyed in all other such natural disasters.

You’ll see art, furniture, and other everyday items the citizens used – in addition to the macabre plaster forms that are accurate representations of the citizens as captured in their last living moments.

Other beautiful coastal towns are nearby and easy to get to, including wineries, ancient villas, grottos, and breathtaking seaside resorts.

1. Pompeii Private Day Trip with Local Guide

Pompeii

This private tour of the amazing and cursed town of Pompeii is a great way to get your Mediterranean coast vacation started.

Your licensed guide will give the tour in either English or Italian; following his lead, you’ll visit the city’s ruins that have been astonishingly well preserved.

The town is full of narrow streets brimming with the histories of the families who called this prosperous town home before that fateful day nearly 2,000 years ago.

The tour includes stops at a theatre, a brothel, and other homes and businesses, as well as the eerily accurate plaster casts of the inhabitant’s last minutes.

2. Guided Walking Tour of Pompeii

Pompeii Tour

This 2 ½-hour guided tour is available in English, French, German and Spanish, and will allow you to skip right through the line and get priority entrance.

Pompeii is one of Italy’s most visited and iconic sites – it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You’ll spend the afternoon discovering the history of this amazing city that was literally frozen in one historically unique moment in time and covered with layers of ash that in some areas exceeded 20 feet deep.

Much of the buried city wasn’t excavated until nearly 1,500 years later, making those undisturbed time capsules shocking and amazing in their completeness and preservation.

3. Pompeii Small Group Tour with an Archaeologist

Pompeii Ruins

If you’re an amateur historian or just want to know all there is to know about what makes Pompeii such a once-in-a-lifetime vacation opportunity, this two-hour guided tour is a great choice.

Your guide will be a knowledgeable and enthusiastic archaeologist who’s up to date on all the historical facts and personal anecdotes that make the town’s story so fascinating and macabre.

The maximum group size is just 15 guests, which means you’ll get that intimate feeling and attention to detail that’s so often lost with large groups.

The tour includes the Marina Gate, baths, a bakery, the basilica, and the plaster death masks.

4. Pompeii Wine Tasting with Lunch

Pompei Tasting Tour

After so much time spent among the amazing city’s long dead, it might be a good idea to switch gears and indulge yourself in a little gastronomical treat at one of the area’s most recognized vineyards.

This two-hour guided tour is available in four languages and accessible to those in wheelchairs.

You’ll see the winemaking process from beginning to end as you stroll through the vineyards, production facility, and the wine cellars where the wine is aged to perfection.

An array of food and wine samples will wet your whistle, and though door-to-door transportation isn’t included, all else is.

5. Full-Day Sightseeing Tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum from Naples

Herculaneum

If you happen to be staying in Naples but are longing to explore Pompeii and Herculaneum, this full-day tour should be on your itinerary.

You’ll see the ruins of Pompeii in the morning with a guide, and after lunch, you’ll be free to discover Herculaneum at your own pace.

Door-to-door transportation from Naples is included. In addition to the archaeological sites, you’ll look into some of the local shops and pick up a few mementos of your trip.

This tour is nearly all-inclusive; though the entrance fees and lunch are included, you’ll need to pay for your own drinks.

6. Full-Day Tour of Naples and Pompeii from Rome

Naples, Italy

In case you were wondering, it’s possible to visit Pompeii and Naples in a day-trip from Rome.

At 14 hours, it’ll definitely be a tiring day, but transportation is included and it’ll be well worth it when you look back on the amazing amount of history and sights that you were able to cram into only one day.

Due to its length and the significant amount of walking that’s required, this tour isn’t a great fit for very young children, the elderly, or those in less than tip-top physical shape.

It’s recommended that you bring a good hat, sunglasses and a comfortable pair of shoes.

7. Private Villa Cimbrone and Pompeii Tour from Rome

Villa Cimbrone

Villa Cimbrone is a large historic estate situated on a rocky bluff over the majestic Amalfi Coast.

The grounds include acres of open space that is full of statues, gardens, and fountains.

In the gardens, you’ll find interesting and risqué representations of Biblical themes like the Seven Deadly Sins, as well as mythological stories and historically important events.

After lunch, you’ll head to Pompeii and check out the town’s amazing sites as your guide gives you an intimate insight into the lives of the inhabitants before their normal lives were cut short in 79 AD.

Transportation and entrance fees are included but food and drink are not, so bring a few Euros.

8. Boat Tour from Sorrento to Pompeii and Capri

Capri Island

If your base of operations for your Italian vacation is Sorrento but you’d still like to see Pompeii and Capri, this tour is for you.

After meeting your guide, you’ll head to the Port of Piano di Sorrento, then go via boat to the Port of Castellammare di Stabia.

From the boat, you’ll see some of the most amazing views of the coastal towns surrounded by hills and cliffs shimmering against the bright blue water.

Your guide will lead you on a tour through Pompeii’s narrow streets and must-see historical sites, after which you’ll head by boat to the island of Capri and take in its many famous grottos.

9. Naples and Pompeii Train Trip from Rome

Pompeii

If you’re young, adventurous and up for an amazing tour of southern Italy by train, this Rome based tour of Naples and Pompeii is a great choice.

It’s only open to those between18 and 39-years-old, which should keep the tour’s pace quick and lively.

Your local guide will share lots of amazing and historical facts about the town of Pompeii and its people, whose lives were prematurely snuffed out on the day of the eruption in 79 AD.

You’ll also have a few hours of free time before traveling to Naples, one of the Italian coast’s most scenic cities that’s also known for its delicious food – especially pizza.

10. Pompeii, Sorrento and Positano Group Tour

Sorrento, Italy

Whether you’re staying in Naples, Salerno or Amalfi, you’ll be able to join this tour that will include Pompeii, Sorrento, and Positano.

The tour is available in three languages and includes pick-up from the ports of Naples, Salerno, and Amalfi.

Though Pompeii is the tour’s focal point, you’ll also get a chance to enjoy the amazing town of Sorrento, which is a mecca for lovers of Italian cuisine.

Last but not least, you’ll visit the scenic town of Positano that rests atop a rocky bluff overlooking the sea.

Keep in mind that this tour doesn’t include entrance fees, food or drink.

11. 3-Day Tour from Rome to Naples, Pompeii and Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast

For those looking for a multi-day, full-immersion tour into the beauty and history of southern Italy, this three-day Naples, Pompeii, and Amalfi tour from Rome is probably the best option.

The tour will be a pleasant mix of guided and unguided time, which will allow you to venture off the beaten path, get away from the crowds, and do exactly what you want.

After the guided portions of your Naples and Pompeii stops, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Amalfi Coast, its beautiful beaches and the amazing seaside town and its stunning vistas.

The tour includes transportation and some meals but not museum admission – except in Pompeii.

12. Pompeii and Herculaneum Half-Day Private Tour

Pompeii

Though Pompeii’s sites really deserve a full day, if you haven’t got that much free time to spare, there are a few options that’ll give you a thorough look at the town’s attractions in only a few hours.

This private four-hour tour is available in nearly 10 languages. In addition to Pompeii, it includes a stop in Herculaneum; although smaller and less known than Pompeii, it’s actually a better-preserved site.

With the preserved items you’ll see and your guide’s careful explanation, the town will come to life, though the tragedy happened nearly 2,000 years ago.

13. Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, and Winery Day Tour

Mount Vesuvius

Pompeii is an amazing town that’s one of the most historic and visited in all of Italy.

That being said, all that morbid chaos and death caused by the fateful volcanic eruption so many eons ago can be a little on the depressing side.

Though even in Pompeii you’re surrounded by natural beauty, it might be worth considering adding a few upbeat activities to your itinerary to mix things up a bit.

If this sounds like a good idea, consider this tour, which includes trips to Mount Vesuvius and a local winery located at the mountain’s base.

You’ll tour the vineyard and sample the wine varieties that are produced.

This tour includes transportation, but not admission fees to historical sites or food.

14. 2-Hour Walking Tour of Pompeii with Light Lunch

Pompeii Walking Tour

For those who don’t want to commit too much of their time to one tour, this two-hour walking tour with a light lunch is a great value.

You’ll still get to see the area’s excavations, architecture, and wonderfully preserved art, but the rest of your day will be wide open so you can go wherever your spirit takes you.

Your local and knowledgeable guide will fill in lots of amazing historical details about the city that was caught off guard and paid the ultimate price.

You’ll get an amazingly accurate insight into the daily lives of the common people who called the town home before it was ravaged.

15. Pompeii Fast Track Ticket

Remains Of Domus Di Paquio Proculo In Ruins Of Pompeii

If your Italian vacation has been full of guided tours with overly-verbose if well-meaning guides, this fast-track entrance ticket is a great way to see the sites of Pompeii on your own terms.

The tickets are good for a full day, so it’s up to you when you want to go.

This site hosts millions of visitors annually and will certainly be one of the visits that you won’t likely forget; it’s the final resting place of nearly 10,000 ancient people whose lives were unexpectedly taken so long ago.

Opening and closing times are great times to visit if you’re keen to avoid the crowds.

How to get to Pompeii

Let’s start with the basics for your Pompeii day trip; how do you actually get there? Most people visit Pompeii on a day trip from nearby cities like Rome , Naples, Amalfi or Sorrento.

In this section I go over exactly how long it takes to get to Pompeii from all the main hubs in the area. Which city you choose to travel from will ultimately depend on your Italy itinerary .

How to get to Pompeii from Naples

Getting to Pompeii from Naples train station for a day trip is simple!

First of all, get yourself to Naples Central Train Station. Catch the train on the Pompei-Sorrento Line, which stops at Pompei Scavi-Villa Misteri.

Trains leave for Pompeii around three times every hour, and the trip takes around 40 minutes to travel the 28 kilometres in total. Train tickets cost around 5 EUR.

To drive the route for your day trip from Naples to Pompeii, it takes around half an hour by car (around 25 kilometres).

How to get to Pompeii from Sorrento

The car journey from Sorrento to Pompeii (around 27 kilometres) takes around 35 minutes to travel.

It’s quicker by train though. The local train from Sorrento leaves every half an hour, and travel time is only 30 minutes. It’s also cheap, costing around 3 – 4 EUR.

How to get to Pompeii from Rome

If you’re planning on a day trip to Pompeii from Rome , you’ll be catching the high-speed train. First of all, you need to get the high-speed train from Rome Termini to Naples Central Train Station.

That costs around 20 EUR and takes 70 minutes. Then from Naples, you’ll follow the same journey as before riding the Pompei-Sorrento Line until Pompei Scavi-Villa Misteri.

It’s possible to drive, but it does take a while (around 2.5 hours) to travel the approximately 225 kilometres between Rome and Pompeii.

Doable, but I’d say maybe a little long for a day trip – don’t forget you’ve got to drive back!

How to get to Pompeii from Amalfi

To drive from Amalfi to Pompeii isn’t too bad of a journey. It takes around an hour to drive the 40 kilometres between the two.

The train to Pompeii from Amalfi begins at Vietri Sul Mare Amalfi Station. The journey takes around half an hour, with a distance of 21 kilometres, and costs around 3 – 4 EUR.

How to get to Pompeii from Positano

Driving from Positano to Pompeii (37 kilometres away) takes approximately one hour. Alternatively, there’s an air-conditioned shuttle bus run by SITA that travels to Sorrento.

After that, you catch the train from Sorrento to Pompeii as above.

Best Pompeii day tours

If you don’t want the hassle of driving, or having to figure out the schedules and station locations involved with taking public transportation, you might want to take a guided tour of Pompeii instead.

What to see in Pompeii in one day

There’s a lot to see on a Pompeii day tour. The city was home to around 20,000 people at the time of the eruption in 79 AD, so that gives you an idea of the size of the place.

The city was buried in volcanic ash and pumice, which both erased the city from the map, but also ironically preserved much of it.

Discovered in the 16 th century and excavated in the following centuries, today Pompeii is one of Italy’s most visited archaeological sites.

Exploring the city offers the chance to see what life was like for those who lived in the Roman Empire.

From seeing the houses of wealthy elites (such as the House of Meander or House of Ceii) to the simple businesses (such as bakeries and brothels), exploring the site is an unforgettable experience.

Highlights of the city include seeing the incredible frescoes at the House of Venus in the Shell, stepping into the city’s sprawling bath house (dating back to 125 BC) and admiring the grandeur of the Teatro Grande.

You can also visit the Foro di Pompeii, the main square where daily life happened, with Mount Vesuvius as a backdrop.

Elsewhere, you can see the tragedy of the eruption in the Garden of the Fugitives, where you can see plaster-cast remains of 13 Pompeii citizens, frozen in time.

If you want to make your own way there, but also want to be able to learn about the site, you can join a guided tour at the entrance of Pompeii itself.

This small group tour is led by a professional archaeologist who’ll lead you around the site for around 2 hours, and help you explore the various excavated wonders dotted around.

It’s super well-reviewed, with many people raving about the guides and how helpful they are in explaining the sights and facts about the city.

We visited Pompeii without a guide, and I wish we’d had one. While it’s a unique and interesting place to visit, it’s also pretty huge, so if you don’t have a local guide you might miss some important spots.

Plus, if you don’t have a guide telling you the history of the sights, you won’t really know what you’re looking at, and it will all just look like ruins to you. Having a passionate archaeologist explain Pompeii’s history is so much better than just wandering around by yourself.

Click here to book your small group tour in Pompeii with an archaeologist! Or check out prices & availability in the calendar below:

How much does it cost to visit Pompeii on a day trip

The basic Pompeii entrance fee is around 18 EUR, but that won’t get you access to the suburban villas. For that, it’s 22 EUR.

Of course, the cost of admission is included if you join a tour, for example, an organised Naples day trip to Pompeii .

The guided tour that you can get from the entrance of the site costs 55 EUR, but includes also the guide and the admission fee.

Driving requires hiring a car if you don’t have one already, fuel if you need it, and the costs of parking.

Entering the archaeological site of Pompeii from Porta Marina

Entering the archaeological site of Pompeii from Porta Marina

With train travel being relatively cheap in Italy, it makes better sense for budget travellers to simply catch the direct trains and pay a few Euros versus all the hassle of hiring a car, driving, and finding a place to park.

Plus, the official parking areas around Pompeii are super expensive! We paid 4 EUR per hour of parking, if you spend the whole day in the Pompeii archeological ruins that adds up.

Organised day trips from cities like Rome, or other far-away cities, makes sense. Costing around 125 EUR per person, they might seem pricey, but that includes everything. Some tours also include lunch.

So in short, if you’ve got the money, it’s easier to spend it on a tour than car hire, as you won’t have to think about logistics at all, which is always a plus!

Is Pompeii worth visiting?

Yes, absolutely! For starters, it’s one of the main archeological sites in Italy.

Even though you won’t get to see everything in total detail with one day in Pompeii, visiting gives you a real insight into what an ancient Roman city would actually look like.

It may even help you appreciate other ancient ruins in Italy. It’s just an incredible place.

What to pack for a Pompeii day trip

Refillable water bottle – There are water fountains where you can refill in Pompeii, so bring a refillable bottle. It’s super hot in the summer months and you should definitely keep hydrated.

Hat – Again, summer in Italy , and especially Pompeii is very hot and there’s virtually no shade. A hat is a must!

Sunglasses – Protects your eyes from the sun’s UV rays.

Sunblock / sunscreen – With pretty much no shade, getting sunburnt is a possibility if you don’t cover up or wear sunscreen. And it’s not fun being sunburnt!

Sturdy, comfortable shoes – There’s a lot of walking around to do on a day trip to Pompeii, and with uneven cobbled roads everywhere, you’ll want some comfortable, sturdy shoes. Hiking sandals would work if that’s what you prefer.

Guidebook – In case you are doing a DIY tour of Pompeii, I really recommend bringing along a relevant guidebook. Otherwise, you’ll find it difficult to appreciate (or even work out) what it is you’re looking at.

Do you need travel insurance for a Pompeii day trip?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your Italy travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

As a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

Where to stay for a day trip to Pompeii

Even though at the start of this article I gave you lots of options of starting points for your Pompeii day trip, I would personally suggest staying in the Amalfi Coast, so that you can combine your visit to the Pompeii ruins with a wider Amalfi Coast itinerary .

I would avoid Rome hotels , as it’s realistically quite far for a day trip to Pompeii. Here are some of the best places to stay in the Amalfi Coast for every budget.

Budget: Holidays Baia D’Amalfi –  While the words “budget” and “Amalfi Coast” don’t often go together, this hotel is pretty affordable and is located right by the harbour.

Click here to book your stay at Holidays Baia D’Amalfi!

Mid-range: Albergo S. Andrea   – This hotel has beautiful views over the Duomo of Amalfi. For an affordable mid-range choice, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Check out prices & availability at Albergo S. Andrea in Amalfi here!

Luxury: Le Sirenuse   – This is the luxury hotel in Positano by definition. With its gorgeous design, impeccable service, stunning views and central position, it’s the perfect place to treat yourself.

Final thoughts on doing a day tour to Pompeii

There you have it, the ultimate guide on doing a Pompeii day tour! Have you been to Pompeii before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Located in Southern Italy, Pompeii is an incredible archeological site, and a must-see in Southern Italy. Doing a full-day tour of Pompeii is a must-see on any Italy bucket list .

Alongside Capri  (especially doing a boat tour in Capri ), hiking the Path of the Gods , and doing a sunset boat tour in Positano , visiting Pompeii was one of the highlights of my recent Amalfi Coast itinerary.

I usually favour nature getaways, like Lake Como or Cinque Terre , but there’s truly something unique about Pompeii.

It’s not every day that you can see the ruins of an Ancient Roman city after all! And such a big and well maintained one too. Regardless of how long your Italy itinerary is, Pompeii is a destination that will enrich it.

I hope you found my Pompeii day trip guide useful! If you have any questions or need help planning your perfect Pompeii day tour, just let me know in the comments below!

How To Visit Pompeii in 2024: Tickets, Hours, Tours, and More

Brandon Shaw Last Updated: March 26, 2024

How cool would it be to walk around an ancient Roman city with an incredible story? Well, you can at Pompeii. It’s one of the largest and best-preserved archeological sites on Earth! But where is it and how do you visit it? In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about how to visit Pompeii.

Visiting Pompeii: What We’ll Cover

Pompeii was a booming port city in the ancient Roman Empire. But all that changed on August 24th, A.D. 79 when the Mt. Vesuvius volcano erupted. Those who were not killed by the missiles of pumice raining down or the lava were wiped out by the toxic gases.

This disastrous day for the Romans has given us an intimate look into what life was like in an ancient Roman city. The volcanic ash and mud from the eruption encased and preserved the city’s artefacts and some of the people’s bodies, clothes, and even places of business.

Over 2.5 million people visit the archeological site of Pompeii annually, taking a journey back in time. In this guide on how to visit Pompeii, we’ll cover:

  • Opening hours and tickets
  • How to get to Pompeii
  • What to see at Pompeii
  • Guided tour options
  • Where to eat nearby

Pompeii Opening Hours and Tickets

Plaster cast of a person laying on their side killed in the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii.

Pompeii is open to visitors every day of the week (with seasonal visiting hours) except on December 25, May 1, and January 1 when it is closed—unless otherwise communicated on the website.

Visiting Hours:

  • From April 1 to October 31: Open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, last entrance at 5:30 pm.
  • From November 1 to March 31: Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, last entrance at 3:30 pm.

Certain villas are closed to the public on Tuesdays.

You can buy your tickets for the Pompeii Archaeological Park directly at the entrance. There are three entrances: Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza Esedra.

You’ll most likely be entering through the Porta Marina, which is the entrance next to the train station and main parking area. It’s also the main ticket desk, so you can buy your ticket here and begin your adventure.

  • Adult Full Ticket: €18
  • Reduced: €2
  • Free under 6 years old

While seeing Pompeii is quite possible on your own, it’s worth considering booking a guided Pompeii tour . The guides at Pompeii are experts in archeological history and will help you understand what you’re seeing in a way that you can’t achieve on your own.

What may seem like a pile of rubble will come to life as a former home, kitchen, or shop from the past. It’s the best way to discover the ancient Roman way of life in the ruins of Pompeii. Book a guided morning tour with us for a more immersive experience!

Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Tours

There are many options for your trip to the Amalfi Coast, whether you’re taking a full trip or just a day trip from Rome. You can even explore the most famous archaeological site in the world: Pompeii. The combination of plunging cliffs, history, and charm make the Amalfi Coast one of our favorite places in Italy.

How To Get To Pompeii

Ancient Roman columns in Pompeii archaeological park

Most people who visit Pompeii come by train from Naples. The good thing is that the train station where you need to get off is right in front of the entrance to the archeological park. It’s a quick walk to the entrance and you can’t miss it.

See the details below to get to Pompeii by train from Rome and the Amalfi Coast and directions for those who have rented a car.

The high-speed train from Rome to Naples runs every 20 minutes. You can take the train from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale in just over an hour. Book on Trenitalia or through Italo. They are two competing train companies. I prefer Italo.

From Napoli Centrale, you can switch to the local train to Pompeii. The local train, called the Circumvesuviana, is located down the corridor in what is technically Napoli Garibaldi Station.

Take the train towards Sorrento and you’ll arrive at the Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri station after about 20 minutes. The station is a matter of feet from the entrance to the archaeological area.

If you choose to take the train to Pompeii on your own but are still looking for a guided tour, check out our Skip the Line Pompeii Ruins Tour with Villa of Mysteries .

If you’ve rented a car, it’s quite easy. Get on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) and head onto the A1 highway to Naples. Once you get close to Naples you change to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or just add the destination to your GPS.

From the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento is the only town close to Pompeii with a train station. If you’re not in Sorrento, you’ll need to make your way there, jump on the train headed in the direction of Napoli Centrale, and get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri.

For the adventurous souls who rent a car, get to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or use your GPS navigation.

What To See at Pompeii

Colourful Roman murals in one of the Pompeii villas

If you’re taking a guided tour of Pompeii, you don’t need to worry about missing out on any of the important things to see at Pompeii—your guide will take care of that.

Here is a quick list of must-see sites at Pompeii. For a more comprehensive list and descriptions, see our guide on the t op things to see at Pompeii .

  • The amphitheater
  • The forum of Pompeii and its baths
  • The brothel
  • The large theater

Pompeii Tour Options

Places To Eat Nearby

Options are fairly limited nearby as far as eating and refreshments go. However, if you’re famished or in need of a cup of coffee, here’s where to go:

Autogrill Pompeii : € | Refreshments —Calling it a cafeteria is a stretch, but it is the only place inside the archeological park to get some refreshments. It’s located behind the Temple of Jupiter.

Bar Sgambati : €€ | Quick Snack —This is the Bar/ Restaurant/ Pizzeria right next to the train station where you get off to visit Pompeii. The food and prices are average, but this is your best bet to get something to eat in the area before or after your trip to the archeological site.

Should I visit Pompeii or Herculaneum?

The biggest difference between Pompeii and Herculaneum is size: the ruins of Pompeii cover about 44 square hectaures, while Herculaneum covers just 4 .

Pompeii was an important city and trade center , while Herculaneum was a small resort town without the large public buildings (forum, amphitheater, theaters, gym) found in Pompeii.

However, Herculaneum is in a much better state of preservation due to the deep layer of ash and dust that covered the site, filling the buildings without damaging them. Pompeii was heavily battered by falling rocks and hot air that knocked down upper floors of buildings and incinerated wood, both of which are still intact at Herculaneum.

All things considered, if you only have time to see one site, choose Pompeii . Herculaneum is a good alternative if you don't want to do too much walking or if the temperatures are particularly scorching, as it has more shade than Pompeii.

We do not recommend visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, as it is simply too tiring.

The Ruins of Pompeii Recommended because: It's a unique example of a perfectly preserved Roman city with temples, theaters, homes, restaurants, and public buildings. More sites open to the public and a greater variety of architectures to visit. You can experience first-hand the majesty of a Roman forum, theater, and amphitheater. Not recommended if: You only have an hour or two, as it takes a significant amount of time and energy to visit. It's a particularly hot day, as there is little shade. Visit Pompeii ruins
The Ruins of Herculaneum Recommended because: It's a small town that was a resort destination in ancient times, and can be visited in less that two hours. There are multi-story houses, wooden furnishing and decorations, and perfectly preserved mosaic and sculptures to admire. Not recommended if: You only have time to visit either Pompeii or Herculaneum; we do not recommend attempting both in one day. You want to explore it all, as many of the houses and buildings are not open to the public. Visit Herculaneum ruins

Visiting the Crater on Mount Vesuvius

Combine a visit to the mount vesuvius national park with pompeii or herculaneum.

Instead of attempting to see both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, we suggest a trip up to the crater at the peak of Mount Vesuvius either before or after visiting one of the nearby archaeological ruins. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes suitable for a short hike up the trail.

Getting from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius Autobus EAV : From Piazza Anfiteatro and the Circumvesuviana Pompei Villa dei Misteri station, you can take the local EAV bus to the highest bus lot on Mount Vesuvius, where you can purchase tickets to the park and join a guided mountain hike. Buses depart every 50 minutes and ride takes about 55 minutes; tickets can be purchased on board for EUR 2.70.
Getting from Herculaneum to Mount Vesuvius Autobus Vesuvio Express : This bus departs from the Circumvesuviana Ercolano station and arrives at 1,050 meters above sea level. From here, you proceed on foot with a mountain guide (about a 20-minute walk). Departures every 40 minutes from 9:30am. Tickets: EUR 20 (bus + entrance to the Mount Vesuvius National Park).

Getting to Pompeii ruins from Sorrento or Naples

The easiest way to reach the Pompeii ruins from Sorrento or Naples is via the Circumvesuviana train that runs between Sorrento and Naples. The train leaves from Piazza Garibaldi in Naples from the underground platforms of the Napoli Centrale station. From the ground-level platforms where high-speed trains arrive and depart, follow the signs downstairs to platform 3 where trains to Pompeii depart. Note the displays that list the next departing train for Sorrento - Pompei so you don't end up in Sarno!

Planning a visit to Pompeii? It’s not so easy to get there from Amalfi on your own! In this article, you’ll find the very best Pompeii tours from Amalfi. Check them out.

Pompeii might just be one of the most renowned cities in Italy . This ancient settlement, inhabited by around 10 thousand people in its heyday, became world-famous in the 16th century .

The remains of the city were found over 1,400 years after it was completely buried in ash and pumice during the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD .

While Pompeii isn’t the only city that disappeared after the tragedy, nor the first one to be found, it’s the largest and undoubtedly the most popular.

It’s also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , and an incredible archaeological site worth the visit.

It houses well-preserved residences, an Amphitheater , a Forum , and magnificent artwork and mosaics , all of which offer a glimpse into the ancient city’s culture, ideals, and mythology.

You’d think that visiting Pompeii from Amalfi would be easy, as the ruins are merely 22 miles (36 km) from the famous coastline. However, the two towns aren’t well connected .

If you want to visit on your own, you will have to take a bus followed by a train. What’s more, you might wait in line for hours to get on the bus if you’re visiting in the high season (and no, I’m not exaggerating).

That is why most people prefer to join a tour and avoid the hassle. Another reason is that exploring Pompeii with a guide is incredibly enlightening . You’ll get to fully understand the purpose of each structure, their art, and the citizens’ livelihoods.

In this article, I have compiled what I think are the best Pompeii tours from Amalfi to help you plan an unforgettable trip to Italy’s most famous ruins.

Why trust my suggestions? While I’m a Bologna native, my extensive travels throughout Italy have taken me to both Amalfi and Pompeii time and again. I’ve carefully selected the tours that truly capture the essence of Pompeii’s remarkable history.

Only the ones that provide exceptional value without compromising on experience have been handpicked. I’m not your tour guide, but I am someone who’s sifted through allllll the options to recommend the best possible experiences.

I generally use Viator and Get Your Guide to book tours around the world. I especially recommend them for their great cancellation policy. If your travel plans change, you can cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and get a full refund.

How to get to Pompeii from Rome?

How to get to Pompeii from Rome

Getting to Pompeii from Rome takes between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on the time of day, season and means of transport. High-speed trains as well as efficient highways connect the two cities. Guided tours to Pompeii from Rome are a great way to witness the ruins without the hassle of driving or dealing with public transportation.

The A1 links Rome and Pompeii in a drive of about 2.5 to 3 hours. From central Rome, take A24 for about 18 kilometers. Exit onto E35/E45/A1 and follow these highways for about 195 kilometers. Take the Pompei Ovest exit and follow SS 18 Tirrena Inferiore/SR18 until you reach the archeological park. Be prepared for several toll booths along this route as well.

Depending on the time of day, you can reach Pompeii from Rome by train in 1.5 to 2 hours. Trains to Pompeii run regularly from Roma Termini Station. Most routes require changes in Naples, where you’ll either pick up another train or a bus.

The most convenient trains are Frecciarossa (high speed) trains that make short work of the 225 kilometers between Rome and Naples. You’ll save time, money and carbon output by choosing rail over road travel.

By organized tour

Put a guide at the helm of your Pompeiian expedition. Don’t bother renting a car or wandering labyrinthine train stations alone when organized tours exist. Hop in a coach, train or private vehicle and let the professionals take charge.

In one convenient package, you’ll have transportation to the archeological park and most often a guided visit included. Some tours even throw in a lunch of local specialties.

How to choose the best Pompeii tour from Rome?

How to choose the best Pompeii tour from Rome

Knowing which Pompeii tour from Rome to choose depends on what kind of traveler you are and what you’re looking for out of a day trip. Journey south by coach, high-speed rail or private vehicle, depending on how much time and money you’re willing to part with.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly outing, book a round-trip shuttle that reserves a 3- to 4-hour window to take in Pompeii on your own. It’s also possible to find guided group tours that won’t break the bank. Small-group tours generally are a step up in cost, but you’ll enjoy a more laid-back vibe than you’ll get with a larger tour.

Want an affordable jaunt for a large private group or a luxurious way to beat the crowds? Private tours are an appealing option for you. Customize your itinerary, sightsee at your own pace, and eliminate the stressors of a group tour.

Near Pompeii is Naples, ground zero for pizza. Pick a tour that stops in this gritty yet alluring town for the world’s best pie and memorable locales like Castel dell’Ovo and the Royal Palace. Looming ominously over the city is Mount Vesuvius. Some tours also take you to the peak of this destructive volcano for a peek into the crater and peerless vistas.

With the Amalfi Coast so close to Pompeii, it’d be a pity not to witness its seaside beauty. Take advantage of the chance to tour this stretch of Mediterranean coastline, or opt for a tour that concentrates on a jewel box town like Sorrento or Positano. Some tours even whisk you to the island of Capri for a quick visit.

Pompeii Tour by bus

Pompeii Tours by bus

Board a coach or mini-bus in central Rome for large or small-group excursions to Pompeii . On tours with groups of up to 100 people, you’ll travel in air-conditioned comfort and have an elevated vantage point in a coach. For small-group tours of up to 25 people, head south in either a downsized bus or minivan.

Group tours by bus offer attractive prices and often provide service in less-common languages. A combination of live guided tours with audio guides in various languages (if necessary) and round-trip transportation from Rome are the prime lures for this kind of travel. Some disadvantages are the lack of personalization and traveling in a large group.

  • Bus tours to Pompeii last about 12 hours, with at least 4 hours of travel time between Rome and Pompeii round-trip. The ride, while long, is scenic. Relax with views of verdant, rolling countryside as you head toward Naples.
  • Many tours escort you on a brief driving tour of Naples. Some include a stop for lunch before reaching Pompeii, occasionally included in the price of the tour.
  • Upon arrival at the archeological park, you'll begin your tour. There are independent options with or without an audio guide in a variety of languages, or you can accompany a live guide with a group. You'll spend 2 to 3 hours touring the city site before beginning the drive back to Rome.
  • Tours to Pompeii from Rome by bus range in price from about €70 per person to €175 per person.
  • Lower-cost tours do not include a guided tour of the ruins.
  • Higher-cost tours provide round-trip transportation from your Rome hotel and other perks like additional stops and/or lunch.

Getting to see Pompeii on a day trip by bus from Rome is very worth the long drive. Bus tours are the most economical guided tours, and the combination of comfortable buses, beautiful sights and well-informed guides make these tours a great choice.

  • Pompeii tours

Pompeii Tour by high speed train

Pompeii Tour by high speed train

Fast, affordable, eco-friendly travel by high-speed train is an exciting way to get to Pompeii for a tour. Train travel in a new country shows you a slice of culture that you might not otherwise see. Marvel at both how quickly you’ll reach Pompeii and the engineering that allows the train to reach speeds of several hundred kilometers per hour.

Private tours from Rome to Pompeii entail a combo of train and private car travel. Make the trek between Rome and Naples by high-speed train, and reach the archeological park and other attractions by private car or bus. Some tours transport you from Rome south by private car and include a return ticket by high-speed rail.

  • Head out from Roma Termini Station between 7 and 9 AM. The ride between Rome and Naples is about 1.5 to 2 hours, and in Naples, you'll board a car or bus for the short drive to Pompeii.
  • Spend 2 to 4 hours exploring the city site with a guide before some time for a self-directed or provided lunch. Your tour may make extra stops to discover Naples, Vesuvius or towns on the Amalfi Coast. Return to Rome in the evening.
  • Group tours to Pompeii from Rome by high-speed train cost between €125 per person and €215 per person. Tours that cost over €200 per person tend to offer lunch and/or a visit to an additional town like Naples, Sorrento or Herculaneum.
  • Private tours cost between €215 per person and €690 per person, depending on inclusions and group size.

We give these tours high marks for efficiency and eco-friendliness. You’ll cut hours off of your travel time between Rome and points south as well as get rid of the carbon output from car or bus travel.

Pompeii tour with Vesuvius visit

Pompeii Tour with Vesuvius Visit

The hulking cone of Vesuvius stands sentry over swaths of land it has created for millennia. Extend your Pompeiian excursion to include a visit to Vesuvius’s crater to add a chilling depth to your day trip. Choose group or private tours of these legendary spots.

Do note that tours to the crater are not available from November to March.

The region’s volcanic soils are ideal for growing wine grapes, and it’s possible to find guided tours that also pause for wine tastings and farm-to-table meals. There are affordable group tours that provide lunch as well as private outings that serve a meal to remember.

  • Depart from a central meeting point in Rome or with pickup from your hotel in early to mid-morning. Sit back on the 2.5- to 3-hour drive south and take in the bucolic landscape.
  • At Pompeii, spend 2 to 4 hours with a well-read guide to help make the most of your tour. Pause for lunch on your own if it's not included on your tour, or head to a slope-side vineyard for lunch and a wine tasting.
  • Feeling sated and brave, buckle in for a driving ascent of Vesuvius. Near the peak, lace up your walking shoes for the short climb to the summit. After a humbling view of the crater, begin the journey back to Rome.
  • Group tours to €140 per person and €200 per person. Higher-cost tours often include lunch and the guarantee of smaller groups.
  • Private tours range between €190 per person and €935 per person.
  • Price differences depend on group size and whether entrance tickets to Pompeii and Vesuvius, guided tours of Pompeii or lunch are included.

The opportunity to see both the volcanic crater and evidence of its destructive capability is eye-opening. We highly recommend making the most of the 3 to 6 hours of travel time between Rome and the area around Pompeii by tacking on a visit to another fascinating site.

Pompeii & Naples Day Trip

If you’re looking to squeeze in as much as possible in your Pompeii day trip, consider an option that takes you to the birthplace of pizza. No matter if you make the journey by bus, car or train, the route to Pompeii passes through Naples. Why not take a break here for a quick exploration?

Many day trips provide a driving tour of the city with chances to investigate a bit on foot. Besides the unmissable pizza, you’ll spot landmark buildings like the Royal Palace, the Castel dell’Ovo and the San Carlo Theater.

The highlight of your whirlwind tour of Naples may be the unparalleled panorama you’ll get of the curving bay, hillside neighborhoods and Vesuvius keeping watch from the south. Some tours offer optional visits to a cameo workshop as well. One minus to adding a Naples visit to your day trip is that it may cut into your time at Pompeii.

  • This hefty itinerary gets you going early with a departure from Rome between 7 and 9.
  • After the 2- to 3-hour drive south, embark on a guided tour of Pompeii.
  • Your lunch break may be before or after your walking tour of the site.
  • Guided tours of the ruins tend to last 1.5 to 3 hours. You'll return to Rome by the evening.

Although Naples is rarely a top priority on people’s travel wish lists, its authentic feel will stick with you. There’s plenty to see, and while you may only spend an hour here, the visit will likely whet your appetite for a longer stay in this multifaceted city. A tour that provides a glimpse of Italy’s past and present gives you a fascinating contrast.

Pompeii & Sorrento Day Trip

Lovely Sorrento has the look of towns on the Amalfi Coast and is a bit closer to Pompeii than Positano. Less driving means more time to get lost on the winding, hilly streets of Sorrento after your edifying tour of Pompeii.

Within view of Sorrento is the Capri Island , an idyllic outpost for the rich and famous. Some packages whisk you to this rocky paradise for a quick visit by boat.

  • Depending on the tour or the time of year, you may either spend the morning or the afternoon in Sorrento with the other part of the day in Pompeii. The drive between Pompeii and Sorrento is about 45 minutes, and day tours often split the time equally between the two locales.
  • Along with a guided visit to the ruins at Pompeii, you'll benefit from either a guided tour of Sorrento, free time or a combination of both.
  • Group excursions to Pompeii and Sorrento cost around €180 per person. These tours tend to set a limit of 18 participants per group.
  • Private tours cost between €375 per person and €900 per person. Lower-cost tours tend to have a set price for your group, making prices per person go down as you add more people. These tours typically don't provide many inclusions. You may have to purchase entry tickets to Pompeii separately for about €15 per person.
  • Higher-end private tours offer skip-the-line tickets to Pompeii. These tours are usually fully guided and may include tastings of limoncello and other local specialties in the price.

Day trips from Rome that visit both Pompeii and Sorrento earn our praise for allowing you to maximize your time in both places. With either small groups or private tours, you’ll have extra attention from your guide and a more peaceful travel experience.

Is a guided tour of Pompeii necessary?

Pompeii is visually stunning, and exploring on your own has its charm. However, the benefits of a guide making the site come alive are well worth the additional cost. We suggest finding a tour that gives you both a guided tour and time to investigate on your own.

Alone, you’ll get to know the town’s layout and absorb the beauty of the remaining ruins and surrounding countryside. Add the knowledge of an experienced guide, and you’ll be privy to facts and nuances that you wouldn’t otherwise get. All in all, enlisting a guide will greatly enrich all that you see.

What languages are available for Pompeii tours?

Tours of Pompeii are offered in English and Italian. There are many tours available in major European languages. Some tours offer tours by audio guide for other languages. There are a few tour providers that require a fee of up to €30 per person for tours in languages besides English or Italian.

The beauty of a private tour is that you can customize it to your tastes and needs. Inform your tour provider when you book if you’d like to customize your itinerary. There may be extra stops you’d like to make between Rome and Pompeii. The tour of the ruins themselves can be catered to your wants.

What will I see on a Pompeii tour?

What will I see on a Pompeii tour

Layers of ash and mud managed to preserve Pompeii’s ruins to a shocking degree after that fateful day when Vesuvius showed its might. Nearly 2,000 years after the eruption buried the town, archeologists are still unearthing artifacts in this once-thriving town.

As the site was excavated, the city plan was unearthed, mosaics dusted off and macabre forms of ash-encrusted humans were found. A visit to Pompeii, guided or not, presents you with a snapshot of one day in 79 AD when all life here stopped.

Some of Pompeii’s more noteworthy places to see are the Forum, the amphitheater, the thermal baths and the Villa of Mysteries. These remains have well-preserved features like mosaics and frescoes.

The amphitheater is the largest of its kind still standing in Italy. Pink Floyd even recorded a live album here in 1972! Spy the curious frescoes at the brothel and the Villa of Mysteries. Note that the Villa is an active archeological site and may be closed for study at the time of your visit. Displays of unearthed objects and bodies will remind you that this was once a bustling city.

How much time do I need to visit Pompeii?

If you decide on a day tour that only includes Pompeii, it’s best to choose one that gives you at least 2 hours to tour the park. To see all of Pompeii, it would take several days. If your main interest is the ruins, we recommend day trips that concentrate all their time at the archeological park rather than including other area attractions.

If you think you’ll be content with a Pompeii tour of up to 2 hours, day trips that tack on visits to the Amalfi Coast, the crater of Vesuvius, Sorrento or Naples are an appealing option. You’ll make the most of your 3- to 6-hour travel time between Rome and Pompeii, albeit for shorter visits to each site.

What should I bring on a Pompeii tour?

No matter the season, be sure to dress comfortably and wear sensible shoes. These day trips are intense and action-packed. Be sure to stay hydrated and fuel up with an energizing meal or snacks. Bringing a refillable water bottle is a smart choice for your health, your pocketbook and the environment.

Summer in southern Italy can be brutal. Sunscreen and sun hats or umbrellas will greatly increase your comfort, as Pompeii has little or no shade. Consider smart casual clothing that’s also appropriate for an active day. Other items that can make or break your excursion are having cash and a phone charger or external battery.

What is the best time of year to visit Pompeii?

What is the best time of the year to visit Pompeii

A tour of Pompeii can be amazing at any time of year. If you’re looking to avoid crowds, plan your visit for times outside of local school holidays. Summer months see heavy traffic as well as vacation time around All Saints’ Day, Christmas and Easter.

Are there any discounted Pompeii tours?

Shop around! Many travel websites offer the same tours at different prices. The Tourscanner website and mobile app are the easiest ways to sift through the offerings to find the best deals.

Travel tips

  • Be sure to travel with plenty of water. The best choice is to bring a refillable water bottle. Tap water in Italy is safe for drinking.
  • Carry both cash and credit cards, as some shops, restaurants and attractions only accept one or the other.
  • The travel time between Rome and Pompeii is significant. If you suffer from motion sickness, take medication before you travel. Be sure to bring enough medication for the return ride as well.

It’s a little bit out of the way, so your tour will involve a bit of travelling but don’t worry, I’ve picked the 12 best Pompeii tours from Rome to make it as seamless as possible. The tours start and end in Rome, with a Pompeii visit in between!

1. Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive

⭐ RATING: 4.7 out of 5 Stars (3200+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 13 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 18 | 🌋 BOOK NOW

The best of the Pompeii tours from Rome is definitely the Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive . It has nearly 3000 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐reviews. That’s an insanely high rating!

When I book a tour, I like to go with the “ tried and tested ” option. And this is the tour with the most number of reviews and highest rating by far!

  • 3000+ 5 star reviews
  • Skip the line tickets
  • Maximum group size of 18
  • Explore the Amalfi Coast on top of Pompeii
  • Flexible itinerary which changes throughout the year
  • Walks Tours is my favourite tour company worldwide
  • Free cancellation
  • Infants under 2 are free (discounted price for up 2-14 year olds)
  • One of the most expensive tour options (but worth it IMO)
  • Itinerary changes in winter so if you want to visit Positano, you need to go in summer

Review which says "Our guide was outstanding! It was so wonderful to have his expertise to guide us around such a large site and efficiently see the most amazing highlights. I learned a ton. The coach was extremely comfortable and the mountain views breathtaking. I also appreciated the rest stop. It was all around a great experience. "

I’ll start by saying that this is one of the best tours I have ever taken anywhere in the world. I can’t recommend the Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive enough.

Having a tour that combines both Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast all in one 13-hour tour is amazing. The private mini-bus departs from Rome in the early morning with up to 18 passengers, travelling in style to the ruins of Pompeii. My group only had around 12 which was a nice bonus.

In the company of a knowledgeable tour guide, you can explore the beautifully preserved ancient city of Pompeii and learn all about the terrifying eruption of Vesuvius from the place that it affected the most. After all, it was the ash of Vesuvius which Pompeii was buried under.

The tickets included in the tour also mean you get to skip the line. Personally, I hate waiting in queues, so I loved being able to just walk right past everyone. Because trust me, the queues get big.

As the sun reaches its peak for midday, you return to the tour bus, heading for the mesmerising Amalfi Coast. The bus stops along the way at prime photo spots making sure you can take plenty of Insta-worthy pictures, which I really appreciated as a travel blogger- I always need lots of pics for my posts.

When you reach the coast you’ll be given lots of free time to spend your day how you’d like to. I always like tours that give you some free time. As much as I love guides and being in a group, sometimes I just want to explore and Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive allows that.

The tour guide gave recommendations. They recommended taking the opportunity to enjoy authentic southern Italian cuisine for lunch , do a spot of shopping in Positano and even take a dip in the Bay of Naples, but I didn’t bring my swimstuff. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

I have used Walks Tours for a number of tours all around the world and they have never disappointed. The company always want you to get the best experience for your money and so in this case, the itinerary may change from day to day to get the most efficient and best timetable.

For example, in peak season cruise ships dock early in the morning spilling thousands of passengers into Pompeii to explore. The tour company keeps tabs on the arrival times of these cruises and will sometimes swap your Amalfi Coast experience around with your Pompeii visit, making sure that you get to experience the ruins in the quieter afternoon.

In low season many shops and restaurants in Positano close, so the company may also arrange for you to visit other nearby towns which will provide you with an equally enjoyable experience. They really go above and beyond.

This careful planning makes this tour stand out from the rest and is one of the reasons it is at the top of my list.

Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Drive allows you to tour two popular areas for a reasonable price and guarantees an unforgettable experience. You genuinely can’t go wrong with booking this tour. It’s my number one suggestion.

2. From Rome: Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option

⭐ RATING: 4.6 out of 5 Stars (2900+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 13 hours | 🧍 GROUP SIZE: Max 18 | 🌋 BOOK NOW

Another extremely highly rated Pompeii tour from Rome is the From Rome: Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option tour.

As the name suggests you will also take a trip to Naples or Positano, depending on the time of year. It’s pretty cool to visit these on top of the amazing Pompeii.

Review which says "Pompeii is not to be missed. This is a long day, but so worth it. The guides were excellent and made the journey interesting. I really recommend Walks Tours, having done two tours with them this trip. The guides are excellent and keen to impart personal experiences and their knowledge is fantastic. Really recommend!"

For the Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option , a private bus leaves Rome from a designated pick-up point early in the morning to beat the rush hour traffic with an archaeologist guide onboard who can tell you all about the city of Pompeii and how it came to be excavated.

Even though I hate early mornings, it was worth it to see the beauty of Pompeii. It’s a pinch-yourself moment walking around the streets.

The cost of this tour includes skip-the-line entry to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and a guided tour. But don’t worry, the guided tour isn’t a pain, there are plenty of opportunities to marvel at the excavated ruins.

What I like about this tour option is that it includes different activities depending on the time of year so be sure to check out what your itinerary would be when you planning your trip.

Summer Months: If you are travelling to Italy between April and November then with this tour you will get the opportunity to climb the mountain which destroyed the thriving Roman town – Vesuvius, taking in some stunning views of the Bay of Naples.

The bus will drive up the huge slope of Mount Vesuvius and then it is a short hike to get to the steaming crater. Although it might not be a far walk it’s recommended you wear some comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet for a lot of the day as it is!

On very rare occasions during the summer, the Vesuvius crater is off-limits and so the tour company will ensure that another equally enjoyable excursion to Naples or Positano is arranged.

Winter Months: In the months of November through to March, Mount Vesuvius is unfortunately closed to the public for safety reasons. Instead, you’ll be driven to the city of Positano, enjoying beautiful coastline views along your journey. Here, you’ll be allowed to spend some free time however you would like.

Whether you choose to visit in Summer or Winter, you are guaranteed to have a once-in-a-lifetime tour. Seeing Pompeii on top of Vesuvius or Positano is amazing.

From Rome: Pompeii Tour with Naples or Positano Option on top of what I have to say is very highly reviewed and promises to be a very enjoyable day trip .

Travelling by air-conditioned minibus, this option takes you off the beaten track with a local tour guide. Offering stops in the wonderful Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano, From Rome: Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano Day Trip is well worth your time.

On arriving at Pompeii, you’re allowed to breeze past the queues and gain instant access to explore.

You’ll be allowed to discover the Roman world for yourself, asking your guide questions about the most well-preserved town that archaeologists have ever uncovered. I love guides who are happy to answer questions, and I’m happy to say, that every guide I had in Pompeii was very friendly and answered everything.

And even though Pompeii is Pompeii and facts won’t change, each guide tells different stories and has different areas of expertise which means no two tours are the same , everyone has a unique Pompeii experience.

After Pompeii, you’ll be taken to Positano, a beautiful town with houses cascading down the hillside. With some free time to use up, you could visit some small boutique shops, sample the local liqueur or visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. I opted for the last option as I don’t drink, but if you do, there’s no better place for wine tasting!

After some free time and grabbing a bite to eat, you’ll be transported further down the coastline to the Amalfi Coast to enjoy the spectacular views of the villages which perch on the edge of the cliffs.

The day trip certainly crams in lots of activities and it is sure to feel long (but it is SO worth it! ). As I said, I hate early mornings, but it’s so worth it for this day. Make sure to pack a sunhat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the hot sun in the summer months as you will spend a lot of time outside.

Want to see and experience as much of Italian culture and history as you can? From Rome: Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano Day Trip has it all packed into one. This option is a great one for anyone who wants to see as much of this part of Italy as possible.

  • Light lunch included
  • Wine tasting

Review which says "This was a fantastic tour, our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about her subject and the whole day went really well. I don't think I would have gotten as much out of 2 days in Pompeii on my own even with a guide book as I got from 2 hours on this tour. The lunch was also fun with good food and wine. Who could ask for more?"

This option includes tickets for a high-speed train to Naples , taking just 1 hour. It’s a completely different experience from driving. It’s very unique. On arriving there you will be transported a short 30-minute journey by air-conditioned bus to the Pompeii site.

Most other tours will take 3 hours to drive to Pompeii, so you’re saving almost half the time.

Here, you’ll step back in time exploring the remains of the ancient city. As you stroll through the streets guests will get a sense of life in the first century and discover the remains of Pompeiians who have been immortalised by the violent eruption’s ashfall.

Following the guided tour ticket holders are transported to a local winery to taste 4 wines produced in the rich, fertile volcanic soils. A multiple-course lunch full of local cuisine follows before being transported back to Naples to get back on the train to Rome Central Train Station.

Rome is worth visiting on its own, but adding Pompeii to a trip to Rome makes it the trip of a lifetime!

Review which says "Lots of fun. Great hosts and tour guides. Very comfortable bus. Lovely lunch too"

Embarking from Rome by coach you’ll travel south towards Pompeii on an excursion which will teach you all about the culture, history and art of ancient Italy and stop in Naples to admire views of Castel dell’Ovo.

You’ll tour downtown Naples , including the Piazza del Plebiscito and Royal Palace and pass through many historic towns before beginning your tour of the archaeological findings at Pompeii. But first, to boost visitor energy levels, a lunch is facilitated.

Your time in the Pompeii Archaeological Park will be fascinating, with an archaeological guide who can tell you all of the tales of the past, explain the processes of excavation and of course, answer questions for the duration of the tour.

On the journey back to Rome, the bus will stop at a coral and cameo factory which displays and sells lots of ancient crafts, dating back to Greek times – the perfect spot to grab an authentic souvenir!

This tour option does facilitate hotel pickups on request but the drop-off is exclusively at the meeting point so you must determine your own way back to your accommodation.

Naples & Pompeii Guided Day Trip with Lunch is a lovely scenic tour and the stop at the coral and cameo factory is an added extra which makes it stand out from the rest!

14 tips for visiting Pompeii (plus how to climb Vesuvius)

14 tips for visiting Pompeii

Visiting Pompeii, the ancient Roman city in southern Italy that was destroyed by a volcano, is on a lot of people’s travel bucket lists – it had been on mine since I was little!

Before I visited Pompeii I felt quite overwhelmed, so I did a ton of research. Read on for tried and tested tips for how to visit Pompeii, along with some advice on how to climb Vesuvius.

Tips for your visit to Pompeii

1. use public transport to get to pompeii.

Pompeii is in the Campania region of southern Italy, 15 miles south of Naples and 150 miles south of Rome. It’s 16 miles from the lovely resort town of Sorrento and 22 miles from Positano, on the Amalfi coast.

A map of Pompeii. Pompeii is halfway between Naples and Sorrento, and not far from the Amalfi Coast, making visiting Pompeii an easy day trip destination

The best way to get to Pompeii from Naples or Sorrento is by the local train, called the Circumvesuviana. The best station for the ruins is Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri train station, on the railway line from Naples to Sorrento.

The train can be very busy and has a reputation for pickpocketing but there’s no reason to be scared. Keep your bag close and your wits about you and it’s perfectly safe and convenient.

Pompei Scavi train station on the Circumvesuviana railway line between Naples and Sorrento

Pompei Scavi station is less than five minutes’ walk from the Porta Marina main entrance to the ruins.

Pompeii from Sorrento

If you’re travelling from Sorrento or one of the other resorts along the coast, the easiest and cheapest way to get to Pompeii is to take the Circumvesuviana local train to the ruins. From Sorrento, the train takes between 25 and 30 minutes, which is almost certainly going to be quicker than driving or taking a taxi.

Pompeii from Naples city centre

Visiting Pompeii from Naples is an easy day trip, and Napoli’s great rail connections make the train the easiest way to get to the ruins.

I recommend catching the train from Porta Nolana station. Since Porta Nolana is the start of the Circumvesuviana line, you’ve got a better chance of getting a seat on what can be very busy trains. Get on a train that’s headed for Sorrento and get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri.

Pompeii from Naples cruise port (Stazione Marittima)

If you’re arriving in Naples on a cruise ship, you’re likely to dock at Stazione Marittima. From there, you could walk the 1.2 miles to Porta Nolana station on the Circumvesuviana line. If you’d rather take a bus, the airport bus leaves from outside Stazione Marittima and stops outside Naples Centrale station for the Circumvesuviana line to Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri.

If you’d prefer a simpler option for your trip and not rely on public transport, there are shore excursion options.

The Porta Marina entrance to the city of Pompeii

If you’re planning to drive to Pompeii, it’s worth knowing that there are no official Pompeii car parks, but there are lots of places to park around Porta Marina and between the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances. One of the most recommended is Pompei Parking Zeus near Porta Marina.

2. Don’t take a big bag into the ruins

The level of strictness at Pompeii varies a lot but it’s best to assume that the staff won’t allow you to take large bags or luggage into the ruins. Anything above 30cm wide, 30cm tall and 15cm wide isn’t allowed – as a rough guide that’s a little bit smaller than the size you’d be allowed as a free bag on a budget airline. As well as being for security, it’s also to reduce damage to the ruins themselves from people rubbing against the walls with their bags. There were a small number of luggage lockers at the entrance when I visited but it’s best to leave bulky bags at your accommodation.

A shop counter in Pompeii. Our tour guide explained to us how people in Pompeii often bought their food from these ancient takeaways.

Even if you are allowed to take your bag inside, the massive size of the site means that trying to explore while carrying heavy luggage isn’t a great idea, and it’ll restrict you from getting inside some of the most famous buildings. The Lupanar (brothel) house with its famous wall paintings is a particularly tight squeeze.

3. Do take a water bottle

There are drinking water taps all the way along the main thoroughfare where you can refill your bottle with safe drinking water for free. You’ll be doing a lot of walking and it can be very hot. As a bonus, many of the taps are set above Roman troughs so you’ll get to feel a little bit like a real Roman.

The Casa del Menandro (House of Menander) was one of the grandest villas in Pompeii. It was excavated and restored in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

4. Don’t worry about food and drink (but do bring snacks)

There are cafes, ice cream/drinks stands and souvenir shops outside all three entrances to the site, but there’s also a reasonably priced cafeteria with a good variety of sandwiches, pizza slices, salads and snacks inside the ruins, just behind the Forum. There are toilets upstairs.

The cafe inside the Pompeii ruins (on the extreme left in this picture) serves drinks, coffee, sandwiches, pizza slices, salads and other snacks. It's located behind the Forum.

You can also take your own food and drink into Pompeii, which is a good thing when the sheer scale of the place might mean you’re nowhere near the cafeteria when you get hungry. The queues can be long at the cafeteria as well in peak season.

Even if you don’t bring a packed lunch, it’s a good idea to take a snack or two, especially if you’re planning on spending the whole day in the ruins.

5. Don’t take one of the guided tours touted outside the ruins

– although they’re cheaper than the official guides they’re much larger groups (30+ people compared to around 15). There’s also a little office just outside the train station with an official-looking sign offering tickets – ignore it, the actual official ticket office is inside the gate.

The sauna of the Stabian Baths

If you’re visiting Pompeii at a busy time it may be a good idea to buy your tickets in advance . While the queue at the ticket office was relatively short when we visited in April, it can get very busy.

Visitor numbers are already capped at 15,000 on the monthly free entry Sundays and there’s talk of restricting the number of people who can go inside the archaeological site on normal days too in order to protect the delicate site for the future. Buying your ticket for Pompeii online means you’re guaranteed to get in. You can buy a maximum of 5 tickets in each transaction.

6. Do take a guided tour of Pompeii

Official Pompeii tourist guides tout as you’re queuing for tickets *inside* the gate at Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra, between 9am and 2pm. They wear a big official pass around their necks and offer tours in several languages. Tours tend to set off when enough people have gathered.

When we got in we were glad we’d gone on a tour as the ruins are huge and confusing with little signage – we wouldn’t have fully appreciated them even with an audio guide and definitely not with just the map and the guidebook.

If you want to be certain of getting on a tour in your language and at the right time, or if you want a private guide for your group you can book a tour in advance .

Most of the Pompeii tours that you can book in advance will include entry tickets. This small group tour with an archaeologist has great reviews and includes skip-the-line entry tickets.

Our tour guide at Pompeii really helped bring the site to life, during our 2 hour small group tour

We had a great guide who’d been a little boy when Vesuvius last erupted in 1944 and he really helped bring the city to life for us. You’ll move quickly and see a lot in two hours, but…

7. …don’t expect to see even the highlights of Pompeii in a couple of hours

With a 2 hour tour and 2-3 hours on your own you can get a taste for the city but Pompeii is easily worth a full day.

We arrived at around 10.30am and didn’t leave until closing time. The main sights are quite far from each other, particularly the larger amphitheatre and the Garden of the Fugitives where the main group of bodies are, and walking on the uneven roads can make distances feel even further.

The large amphitheatre at Pompeii is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre in the world. It's located at the far end of the site, a mile from the main gate and the Forum.

8. Do get a map of the Pompeii site

While you’re at the entrance, do pick up one of the free maps of the Pompeii site. There’s nothing else really to orientate you when you’re in the ruins and the grid system means it’s easy to get lost.

9. Do wear good shoes

The roads are dusty and uneven underfoot and some of the stones are slippy so you’ll want something comfortable with decent grip. Pompeii is definitely not the place for heels. If you wear sandals, expect your feet to be absolutely filthy when you leave!

You'll do a lot of walking on roads like this at Pompeii. Wear good shoes!

10. Do protect yourself from the sun

On sunny days, take a hat, sunscreen and some kind of cover-up. There’s very little shade throughout much of Pompeii (as most of the buildings don’t have a roof!), and the white stone can mean lots of reflected light. An umbrella or parasol could be a good idea. The last time I visited I didn’t see anywhere to buy sunscreen inside the site.

Like many places, summer weather in this part of Italy is becoming increasingly hot – during summer 2023 temperatures at Pompeii hit 40° celsius (104° Fahrenheit). I’d recommend trying to plan your trip to Pompeii to avoid heatwaves, but if it’s unavoidable, then consider getting to the site as soon as it opens so you can see as much as possible during the coolest hours of the day.

11. Do take the time to get some background before your trip

The more you can read up about Pompeii, the more you’ll get out of your visit. I watched a BBC documentary on YouTube and read Robert Harris’s novel  Pompeii before we left – not academic at all but it really helped me make sense of what had happened here when Vesuvius erupted.

If you want a more in-depth discussion of the myths around Pompeii and how people may have actually lived, Mary Beard’s book Pompeii: The Life of a Roman Town is excellent and easy to read.

Even if you plan to take a guided tour (and you should), it’d be useful to read the guide book in advance so you can make your own hit list of places you want to visit in Pompeii after the end of the tour.

The House of Venus in the Shell has many beautiful wall paintings, including the one that the house is named after.

The official, free Pompeii guide book and map that you get at the site (sometimes known as the red book) has recently been put online as a PDF .

12. Do get a different perspective

by visiting Herculaneum , a few stops along the Circumvesuviana train line from Pompeii and another easy trip from Naples or Sorrento. Herculaneum was also destroyed when Vesuvius erupted, but it’s much quieter than Pompeii. Herculaneum is also much better preserved and many of the buildings still have their upper storey intact.

The tragedy wrought by the eruption feels even more immediate at Herculaneum  – by the Roman shoreline are boat houses full of the skeletons of the people who tried to shelter there.

The upper floors of many buildings survived in Herculaneum

13. Do climb Mount Vesuvius

Visiting Pompeii is unmissable, but it’s an awe-inspiring experience to go to the top of Mount Vesuvius and see (and smell) the smoke that still rises up from the crater.

I chose to take a bus transfer from Ercolano train station to Vesuvius with Vesuvio Express, which was a really easy way to get there. You can book tickets for Vesuvio Express online .

From the upper car park it’s about a mile to Vesuvius’s crater, all uphill. It’s a fairly shallow gradient but it’s fine, dusty gravel underfoot so can be tough going. If it would help, you can take a walking stick from one of the guys at the entrance in return for a tip.

Wear shoes not sandals but don’t do what I did and wear your new white trainers – they’ll be covered in red Vesuvius dust and pretty much ruined by the time you get back!

Our shoes covered in red dust after climbing up to the crater on Mount Vesuvius

There are a couple of souvenir shops which sell drinks and basic snacks, and another at the crater. When I visited Vesuvius there weren’t any public toilets anywhere on the volcano, and after overdoing it on hydration for the climb I ended up begging the shop at the car park to be allowed to use their (non-flushing!) toilet. Recent visitors say if you buy something at the shop or pay 1 euro, they’ll let you use their toilet, but that you might still have to hold your nose.

At the top, walk around the crater at least until you get to a jaggedy part with some steps as the crater looks different from different viewpoints. Try to spot Capri and Ischia on the horizon and Pompeii below and look out for puffs of sulphury-smelling smoke to remind you that it’s still an active volcano !

Read my complete guide to climbing Mount Vesuvius

Vesuvius's crater. It's still an active volcano!

Our visit to Vesuvius took around 4 hours from leaving Ercolano station to returning back to Ercolano.

14. Make sure you give yourself enough time

There are lots of tours that let you visit Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum in one day, but that seems very rushed to me.

We did it in two days – one full day for Pompeii and another where we visited Vesuvius in the morning and Herculaneum in the afternoon (travelling from Sorrento), and that felt about right to us.

The two archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum are both very moving (not least because of the body casts at Pompeii and the skeletons at Herculaneum) and for me it was worth taking some extra time so it wasn’t too overwhelming.

A small shrine in one of Pompeii's grand villas

What happened at Pompeii?

In AD79, Mount Vesuvius erupted . The force of the explosion blew the entire top of the mountain off, sending rocks, ash and dust over 10 miles into the sky. The rocks and ash rained down on Pompeii for nearly a full day. Most residents had already fled the city but around 2,000 people (around a tenth of the population) stayed behind.

A body cast of one of the victims of the Vesuvius eruption. This cast was in the Forum, near the entrance, but the largest group of body casts is by the Porta Nocera in the Garden of the Fugitives.

When, finally, a flood of thick volcanic ash, poisonous gases and superheated rock hit Pompeii at nearly 100 miles an hour, the residents who had stayed were asphyxiated , and the city was buried underneath millions of tonnes of volcanic debris.

The victims’ bodies decomposed where they’d died, leaving body-shaped spaces in the hardened ash. Almost 2000 years later, archaeologists were able to pour plaster into these spaces, revealing the last moments of the victims and creating Pompeii’s famous body casts.

Pompeii has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997 as a joint listing with nearby Herculaneum and the Villa Opolontis at Torre Annunziata.

If you’re planning to go to Herculaneum as well as visiting Pompeii (and you should), you can buy the Campania Artecard which will get you into both sites (plus a number of other sightseeing spots in the area) over the course of your visit. Read my full review to see if the Campania Artecard is worth it (spoiler – the 365 Lite card is an absolute bargain!)

Visiting Pompeii in 2024

The information below is correct as of 10 February 2024.

Pompeii opening times in 2024

During winter (dates up until 31 March 2024), Pompeii is open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm, with the last entry at 3.30pm. Access to some houses is restricted after 4.15pm.

In the summer months (1 April until 31 October 2024) the site is open 9am to 7pm, with the last entry at 5.30pm. Access to some houses is restricted after 6pm.

The horseshoe-shaped Teatro Grande

Pompeii is closed on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and sometimes on May Day. If the site is going to be open on May 1, the authorities tend to announce it only a week or two in advance.

House of the Day

In summer 2023, a new “House of the Day” programme began, and it’s continued into the colder months. This programme gives you the chance to visit a house that isn’t normally open to the public. You can see the latest schedule on the Pompeii website.

How to buy tickets for Pompeii

For your trip to Pompeii you can either book your official Pompeii tickets online or go to the ticket offices at Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra. There was a small queue when I visited in mid April so booking online could be a good idea during the hot summer months.

Tickets for the ruins cost €22.00 for an adult ticket for Pompeii and the surrounding villas, and €18.00 just for Pompeii. There’s a €1 booking fee for booking online.

Most guided tours will include a skip the line ticket .

If you’re planning to visit Herculaneum , the Archaeological Museum in Naples or other museums and attractions in the area then it might be worth buying a Campania Artecard . I’ve written a full review of the Campania Artecards, plus competitors like the Naples Pass and Pompeii Card .

Visiting Pompeii is free on the first Sunday of every month but it does get very busy! You can avoid the queues for free Pompeii tickets by booking them online .

How to visit Pompeii from Rome

It’s possible to visit Pompeii on a self-guided day trip from Rome thanks to Italy’s amazing high-speed trains. If you choose the fastest train from Rome Termini to Naples Centrale you’ll be there in 1 hour 13 minutes. Tickets are very reasonably priced if you book in advance. From Naples, take the local Circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri.

As of July 2023, there’s a new direct Frecciarossa fast train service between Rome and the modern town of Pompei. The special train runs every Sunday, leaving Rome at 8.53 and arriving in Pompei at 10.40.

A guided tour from Rome , a direct coach transfer or even a private tour is another option for visiting Pompeii from Rome on a day tour.

When to visit Pompeii

Visiting pompeii in spring.

March, April and May can be the best time to visit Pompeii and all the other attractions in the area. March can be a little chilly with a few days of rain, but cooler temperatures are good for exploring the ruins.

Pompeii is open as normal on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, which in 2024 falls at the very end of March (Easter Sunday is March 31 2024). Trains and buses to Pompeii will also be running but to a holiday schedule with reduced frequency.

I visited Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum in mid April and thought it was the perfect time to take a trip to this part of Italy. The weather was warm and sunny but not too hot, and at Herculaneum in particular the spring flowers were beautiful. Summer opening hours start on April 1, giving you an extra two hours to explore (I needed it!).

The streets near the Amphitheatre were really pretty

Visiting Pompeii in summer

If you visit Pompeii in June, July or August, you’ll need to prepare for high temperatures, but there are some interesting extra events during the summer that could make summer the best time for you to visit the ruins of Pompeii.

During June and July, there are often theatrical and music performances in the Roman Teatro Grande or occasionally in the Amphitheatre.

Pompeii is absolutely huge, which is why I recommend spending a full day in the ruins. This aerial photo shows around a quarter of the site.

Long, warm summer evenings allow for other events too, including evening walks, concerts and theatrical performances.

If you’re visiting Pompeii in early May, be aware that May 1 is officially one of the few days that Pompeii is closed, but that’s by no means set in stone. In 2023 the authorities decided to open on May 1 after all, with less than two week’s notice.

Visiting Pompeii in autumn

The autumn or early winter months of September, October and November can still be good months to visit Pompeii. September and October are both still warm and sunny, and the summer opening hours at Pompeii last until the end of October.

In November you can expect more rain in the bay of Naples and cooler, but still comfortable temperatures.

Visiting Pompeii in winter

December, January and February are the low season for tourism in the Bay of Naples, and if you visit during this time you should find the archaeological sites quieter than normal.

If you’re staying anywhere other than Naples you may find that shops and restaurants that cater mainly for tourists are closed for the winter, but prices are cheaper in the ones that stay open. Christmas in Naples looks absolutely magical, with lots of festive lights and crib displays.

A snowy Mount Vesuvius

If you’re hoping to climb Mount Vesuvius during your trip to Pompeii then it may be better to come during the slightly warmer months as bad weather or even occasional snow can make the hike up to the top hazardous.

Facilities at Pompeii

Toilets and drinking water are available inside the site. There’s a cafeteria near the Forum but it’s a good idea to take your own snacks, especially since the site is so large and you might be a long way from the cafeteria when you get hungry.

Which entrance to use for Pompeii

There are three entrance gates for Pompeii, all with a range of facilities:

  • At the Porta Marina entrance (closest to the Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri train station where trains from Sorrento stop) there’s a ticket office, toilets and left luggage lockers.
  • At Piazza Esedra, a little further along from Porta Marina from the station, there is a bookshop and toilets. There’s a small police station just outside the Piazza Esedra entrance.
  • At the Porta Anfiteatro entrance (closest to the modern town of Pompei) there’s an ATM, bookshop, toilets and left luggage facilities.

Where should I stay for visiting Pompeii?

If you’re planning a trip to Pompeii, a big decision is where to stay. Most people choose to either stay in Naples or Sorrento when visiting Pompeii – both places have lots to do and are roughly the same distance from the ruins but they offer really different vacation experiences.

Since it’s such a big part of what to know before visiting Pompeii, I’ve put together another post with the best places to stay to visit Pompeii along with advice on areas, how to get to Pompeii from each place and what to expect.

Thank you so much for all of these tips, Helen! Thanks to you, it was easy to organize our trip to Pompeii and we had an amazing visit.

Hi Catherine, thanks so much for your comment, I’m so glad you had a great trip!

Thank you, very useful!

Thanks Sarah!

Hello Helen, Excellent articles, great tips and a lot of very helpful information!

We are going to visit there mid-November. We will for sure go with a tour as you suggested. You mentioned that there are official tour guides *inside” the gate at Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra, between 9am and 2pm. Are there always such tour guides available? We have 9 people. I want to make sure that we can join a tour. Or would you rather recommend us to book a tour in advance at “GetYourGuide”, which is more expensive(55euro) than the official tour guides (15euro). Thank you so much!

Hi Weihua, thanks for your message and I’m so glad you’ve found my site useful!

We were able to get on a tour fairly soon after buying our tickets, we had to wait for a couple more people to join but that didn’t take long. With 9 people though, I’d be tempted to be cautious and book a tour in advance.

Hello Helen! Thanks for all your practical tips. I just wanted to clarify your advice regarding the Vesuvius express bus and crater entry ticket. Did you mean that the combo ticket can only be purchased in person and doesn’t require an online reservation? Also, is there a discount if I get the Campania Artecard? One more question regarding the Campania Artecard, do you still need a reservation for Pompeii before arrival? Thanks!

Hi Helen! It used to be that you couldn’t buy the Vesuvius Express combination ticket including the entry ticket to the crater online, but they’ve recently updated their website and you can buy them together now. I’m afraid there’s no discount on Vesuvius Express tickets with the Campania Artecard.

You don’t need a reservation for Pompeii if you have the Campania Artecard, but you will need to show your Artecard at the ticket desk.

Hi Helen, Your blog is amazing and very informative. Thank you. One question: the Ercolano Scavvi trains seem to be only one every three hours. We would like to use Versuvio express for the transfer and park entry combo you recommend, but I can’t seem to find any more frequent trains. Any ideas where I’m going wrong? Thank you.

Maria, Norfolk

Hi Maria, thank you!

It sounds like you might be looking at Campania Express train times – the normal Circumvesuviana trains are much more frequent and while they’ll be much busier than the Campania Express trains, they’re absolutely fine. Just keep an eye on your stuff as pickpockets operate on the train. Hope you have a wonderful trip!

Thank you Helen, Great information about Pompeii and how to make it happen. I’ll be visiting on May 28th and will write afterwards. All the best, Drake

Thanks Drake, hope you have a brilliant trip to Pompeii!

Really useul blog, thanks – we are heading to the Sorrento region in mid-May and your advice has been very helpful.

Thank you Jane, hope you have a wonderful trip to Sorrento!

Thank you for such helpful advice on such an overwhelming amount of possibilities! We’ll be in Sorrento and the surrounding environs in May, and your updated info, as well as links, have answered a lot of my questions / concerns. I look forward to following you for future and past suggestions!

Thanks Liz, hope you have a wonderful trip!

What fantastic tips and information. Wonderful to read and have taken screenshot of the train information. I’m in naples in September and going to do pompeii, herculeum and vesuvius on different days to get the best experience of them all. I really appreciate the work you have put in to help us would be travellers.

Thank you Josie, and that sounds like a great plan to get the most from your time at each site, especially if it’s still hot in September. Hope you have a wonderful trip!

Thanks so much for a wonderfully comprehensive guide! We are visiting Pompeii and all of the other archaeological sites in April and can’t wait!

Thanks Joanne, I hope you have a wonderful trip 🙂

This is a spectacular guide. Extremely informative and helpful, thanks for taking the time to put it together.

Thank you Aurore, your comment really made my day!

Hi Helen Thanks so much for your really helpful guide! One question, do you have any advice for disabled access to Pompeii? Many thanks Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for your comment. The Pompeii authorities have set up a route which is accessible for people with motor impairments, so it’s relatively flat. There’s more information on that and a map here . There are audio guides which might be helpful for people with visual impairments. The site was trialling guided tours in Italian Sign Language but I couldn’t find any more information on this I’m afraid, and it seems like it was in Italian Sign Language only. I hope this helps.

This is so useful – thank you!

Is there anywhere you’d recommend to stay close to Pompei or Vesuvius? If visiting both sites is a two day event, I’m thinking it’d make more sense to stay nearer and avoid the two hour round trip from Sorrento or Naples.

I’ve just found your page on where to stay and it answers all my questions! Thank you!

You’re welcome, hope you have a fantastic trip 🙂

Very useful thank you.

Hello Helen, your blog is very useful. We visited Pompeii on 6th September so wanted to update you. They are no longer insisting that you follow one of the two routes. The arrows are still there, but within the designated areas you can wander about freely. I don’t think any more of the site is open though, for example the brothel is still closed. We made a mistake and bought online tickets from Tiqets rather than the official site, and they said we couldn’t enter until after 11.30,but on changing the QR code to an official ticket at Porte Marina we got in immediately. It also looked as though people were buying tickets at the office rather than online, although the website had not been updated to reflect that. We found it all pretty confusing to start with! The cafe at the Forum is doing takeaway only (which means everyone sits outside closer than they would be at tables in order to be in the shade..) and the toilets there are open.

Thank you for all the info! We stayed in Pompeii and followed your advise, we took our time to visit the Pompeii ruins in one day (… and even though a few places/sites were closed, it was definitely a great experience – we took our time to walk around, it was not crowded and we were able to see a lot in one full day), day 2 we spent in Vesuvius and Herculaneum! Fantastic

Thank you for the helpful tips! Great Blog

Thanks so much for updating this for covid info. My friend and I are travelling for one week to Sorento in October and we were uncertain how/when/what etc to visit Pompeii etc. You’ve just told us perfectly how to do it 😂. Hugs all round x

Thanks for your detailed information. We were supposed to travel last Month but due to Covid-19 this has been moved to next August. A little warmer than we had planned !! So the tips on water and light luggage will be useful. We were so disappointed to cancel but now have a whole year to find interesting info like yours to help us make the most of our trip. Thanks!

Hi Helen – Thanks for this post. We are planning a trip for Easter and your travel tips have been very helpful.

Thanks Jan, I hope you have a fantastic trip.

Hi, thank you for this information. We booked to go to Naples today, we arrive on Friday. I’m very much looking forward to visiting both sites & of course Mount Vesuvius. I’ve noted down your advice, thanks again 😁

I hope you had a great trip, if you have any tips from your visit please do share 🙂

Hi Helen, I agree your article is superb, very clear and informative. I’ve been busy writing little notes down. I’m looking forward to my visit in July with family.

Thank you Nesta! I hope you have a fantastic trip.

Great article, thank you. We did Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, and loved the contrast between the two sites. And, just to let anyone else reading this know, there are now toilets in the upper car park at Vesuvius!

Excellent intel, hurrah for toilets at Vesuvius! Thanks for your comment 🙂

Hi Helen, superb article, very useful thank you. I and my three grown-up kids (teens and 20’s) are looking forward to a 3 day break in Septmeber. From your description I should have gone for a long week instead of a long weekend. Is there a way that you could set up an “if you enjoyed this article, click here to donate a £1”. I for one would make a contribution. Having purchased Eyewitness & Rough Guide books on the area, your precise info has been the best source so far. Very well done Helen. And thank you. Wishing you continued good travelling. Mark

Thank you for your very kind comment Mark, I hope you have a wonderful time in Italy 🙂

I am going to Pompeii tomorrow morning and am glad that I read your blog first. Very helpful! Thanks.

Thank you, I hope you had a great time!

Thank you so much for such great information . I particularly liked your advice on footwear, and how long to expect to spend at each of the sites. We’re going to Sorrento next week for 4 nights, so we’re gonna be pretty busy!

Thanks Diane, I hope you had a great time in Sorrento!

Currently Vesuvius does not look as scary as we imagine it, but it is worth seeing it up close, because who knows when it will explode again 🙂

True! Hopefully with technology we’d get some warning though!

Thank you Helen for taking the time to do this. Really helpful – precise and comprehensive. Pictures helped too and resources to learn about Pompeii before visiting. Great to know that Pompeii really does take a day to visit properly. Would you advise booking entry tickets ahead? We are going for the first time in mid June this year.

Hi Tamaris, thanks for your comment. The queue to get in wasn’t too bad when I visited in April a couple of years ago, but I don’t think it’d do any harm to book tickets online in advance, especially if you’re planning to visit at a slightly busier time of year. Hope you have an amazing time!

It is a great article! we are planning to visit in June first week and it will be most helpful. I do have a query though, we will be coming from Sorrento and will most probably hire a private car as we need to go to Naples later. Would you recommend getting the tickets beforehand or should we buy at the spot? We have two sons aged 12 and 10 and they are usually short of patience while standing in queues.

Thanks Harshita. If your sons are short on patience it’s probably a good idea to book the tickets online beforehand. Hope you and your sons have an amazing visit to Pompeii!

Thank you very much for this tips! Last time we visited Pompei there wasn’t a cafeteria inside and we had to carry around everything for a picknick. There was no water inside, too… pretty hard on a hot summer’s day!

We’ll visit Pompei this april and if there is any news I’ll let you know!

Oh goodness that must’ve been a tough one, we were constantly filling up our water bottles! Please do let me know if anything has changed when you visit in April, I hope you have a wonderful time.

Hi Helen I read your post letter by letter, your writing is precise and captivating. Me and my daughter (9) plan to visit Pompeii this May. My question is regarding food: can you bring a packed sandwich and eat during the visit? I mean like sit down on a rock, have a sandwich, a drink and keep going…Or fruits? Traveling with my daughter has taught me to always have something to nibble….

Hi, yes there are lots of places where you can sit down and eat a packed lunch – one of the amphitheatres would be a great spot! I always take snacks with me too 🙂 Hope you enjoy your visit!

This looks like such an amazing and unique experience! I’ve only ever heard of Pompeii from old roman and greek stories. I absolutely love visiting historic sites like this one. Thanks for the new travel destination inspiration!

Sending my love xx

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the post!

Hello, is it best to see Pompeii first and the Mount Vesuvius or does it not matter on the order? We will be coming from Sorrento. Is there a train back from Mount Vesuvius if we do that second? Thank you!

Hi, if at all possible then I’d recommend doing them on separate days as Pompeii is enormous and it worked better for us to team Vesuvius with a visit to Herculaneum. Herculaneum is amazing – if you’ve got the time I really recommend it. If you have to do Vesuvius and Pompeii on one day then I’d do Vesuvius in the morning and Pompeii in the afternoon. Go from Sorrento on the train to (modern) Herculaneum and take the bus trip to Vesuvius which leaves from just outside the station. When you get back to the station at Herculaneum, get the train from there to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station which is just outside the Pompeii ruins. Then a train back to Sorrento. Sorrento, Pompei Scavi and Herculaneum are all on the same train line so it’s an easy trip – we also stayed in Sorrento. Hope you have an amazing time!

Hi Helen, very helpulf your info, I have a question, Im going next september, do you think that I can do Pompeii and Herculaneum on the same day?

I think it really depends on your stamina levels, what kind of traveller you are and honestly how interested you are in the places themselves. If you get to Pompeii at opening time, do a tour and then hit the major sights that aren’t covered on the tour and go straight on to Herculaneum, it’s definitely do-able. I glad we had a bit more time at both places as I really enjoyed just wandering through the streets, taking it in, imagining what it was like to live there. Don’t underestimate how big Pompeii is though, the amphitheatre and the place where you’ll see most of the body casts are both at the far side of the site – visiting Pompeii is honestly like going on a mini city break. Hope this helps and you have an amazing trip!

I stayed in Pompei June 2017, visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, climbing Mount Vesuvius and visited Sorrento, Capri, Ravello, and more. I just loved this area and I plan to go back in future during the spring. Although I loved Pompeii I enjoyed Herculaneum much more, there were less crowds and easier to get around. I also loved the fact they left what appears to be the original remains ( I may be wrong)of the citizens of Herculaneum in their final resting place in shops located in Bay Area. Also at Herculaneum there was a beautiful cat that really took a shine to me, and I named him Titus . I was told by the staff that this was the first time they had seen him be friendly with anyone including them. Titus even followed me around during my tour. Ahh memories. #memories #missingpompeii #missingherculaneum #titusthecat 🙂

Thanks for commenting! I think they are the original remains, I understood they removed some for testing but the others are original. So tragic, it really brings it home to you doesn’t it. Titus sounds awesome, I love to make friends with a cat on holiday 🙂

My daughter and I are traveling to Pompeii in August! I can’t wait. We were planning 2 Days here and then maybe catching a ferry to Capri.

Oh wow, you’ll have an amazing time. Definitely make sure you take a water bottle to refill though! Hope you and your daughter enjoy your trip.

Thanks a most helpful article.

Thanks Rachel, glad it was useful!

Best Naples to Pompeii Tours

1. naples or sorrento: full-day pompeii and mount vesuvius tour.

View from a stone street in Pompeii where you can see the ruins from columns and old building during one of the best naples to Pompeii tours.

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5.0 (2927 Reviews) Price: $108.72 per person Duration: 8 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Starhotel Terminus Operator: IAMME IA! – Gray Line Amalfi Coast Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

After checking out some of the best food tours in Naples , you may need to do some walking to digest all of that pizza. So, be sure to go for a glorious walk during one of the best Naples to Pompeii tours.

Now this Naples or Sorrento: Full-Day Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Tour is a stellar option for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, you’ll get complimentary transportation to and from Naples to Pompeii – which makes a way better option than taking the train.

Yeah, I opted for the train and it was a bit confusing since there were no signs telling me where to go when I had to change trains to get to Pompeii.

Additionally, you’ll get epic skip-the-line access to Pompeii. This way you can avoid waiting for hours in line (yes, hours) to get tickets like I did the first time I visited.

Yup, trust me. Going tour-free was a BIG mistake.

Plus, your expert guide will swiftly lead you through this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site and explain everything that you’re looking at.

“Definitely worth for us. Our driver Antonio and guide Carolina were just great! Thanks guys for making it really fun for us. Tour in Pompeii was totally worth it, I can not imagine to go without our tour guide, we learned so much about the history and she made sure to show us all the main points. Lunch was awesome, highly recommend to include it (starter, main course, desert and beverage). Overall really glad we took this tour and saved ourselves from the pain of trying to make it on our own by public transportation.” Adela ( read more reviews now )

You know, so that you can fully appreciate the significance of the artwork, mosaics, frescoes, ruins (think Temple of Apollo and the Roman Forum), and casts of people from AD 79 that are sitting before you.

By that time you’ll be a little hungry. So, your stellar guide will take you to a local area where you can find some lunch or dig into a three-course meal that you preselected for your tour of Pompeii from Naples.

Once you’ve had your fill, you’ll then drive to the top of Mount Vesuvius before doing a thirty-minute climb to the very top to admire sweeping views of the Bay of Naples below.

Sure, it’s a bit more expensive than visiting Pompeii on your own.

But, all of the time you save, the aggravation you avoid, and the knowledge you gain from this tour of Pompeii from Naples makes it 110% worth it.

During your visit, must-see highlights include the Bath House, the Forum, private homes, and the Theatre – all of which are well-explained to you by an expert archaeologist.

“Fabrizio was a wonderful guide. He was so knowledgeable about Pompeii and really painted a vivid picture of the place for us. He also set up lunch for us and gave us lots of recommendations when we visited Sorrento. The drive along the Amalfi Coast was beautiful—and the perfect relaxing way to end a busy day. On top of that, he’s a kind, laid-back person. You can tell he truly loves showing people around the area.” Brittany ( read more reviews now )

Next, embark on a 4-hour Amalfi Coast drive with plenty of picturesque photo ops along the way.

But, the best part? You get to choose where to stop since this is your private tour.

However, options include epic places like Ravello, Amalfi, Positano, and Cetara (more off-beat and where you can see how “colatura di alici” fish sauce is traditionally made).

I am gonna be real with you. Italy is a BIG ass place with tons of epic destinations to enjoy.

However, most normal humans out there (at least from the US) only get around two weeks of vacation per year. So, it’s likely that your mega epic Italy itinerary might feel a wee bit rushed.

I mean, my first trip to Italy I only got to see Milan , Rome , Pompeii, and Naples and it felt frantic since I had less than two weeks for my trip.

So, if you feel like I did then this Pompeii Half-Day Tour might be one of the best day trips to Pompeii from Naples for you.

It’s very similar to one of the best Naples to Pompeii tours outlined above except that you’ll just be visiting Pompeii and NOT Mount Vesuvius.

Therefore, this might be the best Pompeii tour for you if you want to be taken to the site, given skip-the-line access, and love the idea of a guided tour of the ruins.

“Our guide was awesome, packed a lot of information in on a short time ( 1/2 day tour) we had some free time to roam around and free time to get some refreshments and look at the shops after.” Anonymous ( read more reviews now )

In fact, you’ll be escorted to highlights like the immortal brothel (Lupanar), the Forum, the fancy House of the Vettii, and so much more – all of which are paired with excellent expert commentary.

Yeah, the free time really helps because you can get away from the crowds and explore parts of Pompeii that most tour groups don’t get to.

Additionally, you’ll love that this Pompeii tour is a bit cheaper than the full-day tour.

“Our guide, Antonino, picked us up at the Napoli Train Station and the adventure began! Based on previous discussions he created the perfect itinerary including driving the Amalfi Coast and exploring the ruins of Pompeii! Along the way he provided tons of information to make the journey more meaningful. But the highlight of the day was a customized drive to the small mountain village of Petina where my wife’s great grandparents grew up! Believe me that is in no one’s guidebook! But Antonino took us there and served as translator so we could meet some of the townsfolk and explore the quaint streets. It was amazing and an experience we’ll never forget!” Anonymous ( read more reviews now )

Conclude your visit with a stop at the oldest Roman amphitheater in the world before heading to Positano on the Amalfi Coast.

Another hour in Pompeii would have been cool but understand it can take days to get round all of it. We had wine tasting and were surprised to get a small but very tasty three course meal with it as well. That before the climb up Vesuvius was a bit much but a good way to burn it off. Overall really good and would definitely recommend it!” Mark ( read more reviews now )

Paying for the extra guide in Pompeii is really the only way to see the highlights in only two hours. The guide was good, but not as good as Dominico. “The tour guides were all wonderful, Chris, Francesco, and Sal picked everyone up on time and then brought us to Pompeii. we split up by languages and our Pompeii guide was fantastic (sadly I forgot her name!), she gave great context to the ruins. you could spend a couple days in Pompeii, though we only spent a couple hours – which was fine because it was very hot, I couldn’t have done much longer. We then met back up with Chris the groups split up more: those on the wine tasting were taken to Cantina del Vesuvio winery. We tasted 5 wines across an antipasta course and a pasta course lunch and got to meet the owner, before getting to see some of the vineyard, the bottling, and the cask areas. We were then taken back to our drop off points by around 3. 5/5 if you’re not looking to spend all day at either the ruins or the winery.” Anonymous ( read more reviews now )

Get the inside scoop about Sorrentino wines (think periodical lava flows and sunburnt ground) and discover what makes them so delicious before digging into a decadent Mediterranean lunch.

However, no meal here would be complete without a selection of “Falanghina,” “Lacryma Christi,” and “Aglianico” wines to complement your meal and round out the day.

11. Pompeii and Capri Island Day Trip

Rating : 4.0/5.0 (227 Reviews) Price: $194.00 per person Duration: 8 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Pick up Included Operator: Worldtours Details: Read more on Viator Now!

This tour of Pompeii from Naples is pretty rad for a couple of reasons. First of all, you’ll get picked up directly from your hotel.

Secondly, you’ll enjoy a 2-hour, skip-the-line walking tour of Pompeii. Therefore, you won’t have to waste time buying tickets and only have to sit through a short, 25-minute drive to Pompeii from Naples.

You’ll also see all of the site’s main highlights before driving back to Naples to hop aboard the hydrofoil boat to Capri.

In total, the journey to the island should take 45 minutes, with your guide escorting you to the “funicolare” to get to the one and only Piazzetta.

“Our tour guides were wonderful! Very well informed about the locations we visited! I appreciate that we learned quite a bit of local history and yet still had time to explore and see some things on our own. We’ve done other tours with different companies that were super fast paced and had WAY too much information thrown at us, this was so much better. I’d love to have the same tour guides in the future if bringing other friends to the area. Will absolutely book via Viator for tours in the future!” Michelle ( read more reviews now )

Afterward, enjoy a bit of free time so that you can grab a coffee at the Gran Caffè Vuotto and take in the sweeping views of the Belvedere from the Gardens of Augustus.

Yes, this is one of the best Naples to Pompeii tours that is a bit expensive, but it can be worth it if you’re short on time and really want to pack a lot of fun into your visit.

My #1 pick 🏆 for the best Naples to Pompeii tour is this full-day Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius ⛰️ tour . It’s super well-reviewed and a great way to enjoy what the area has to offer without getting overwhelmed.😀

Best guided Pompeii tours from rome

The easiest way to see Pompeii on a day trip from Rome is to join a guided tour. This way, you can relax while in transit and listen to your guide explain history and significance of the site before you arrive. Your guide will then help navigate you through the huge site that is Pompeii and show you the main points of interest and the stories behind them.

The site itself is very poorly marked so you need some sort of information with you to fully appreciate what you are seeing. Choose a tour led by a qualified archaeologist and you will be in the best hands to discover the stories and history of Pompeii.

During the peak season from May to October, the site can get very crowded. An expert guide will know how to avoid the congestion and show you the highlights of Pompeii.

We think the best Pompeii tours from Rome offer an additional stop to make the trip down from Rome very worthwhile. This would be harder to manage if you tried to do the trip on your own in a day. And the best thing is you don’t have to worry about logistics getting back to Rome because that is all taken care of.

Pompeii and Amalfi Coast

If your itinerary just could not stretch to spending several days in the south of Italy but you really wanted to see Pompeii and Positano then Take Walks / Walks of Italy Pompeii and Amalfi Coast tour is a good choice.

Leaving early in the morning from Rome, this tour includes a guided experience of the ruins of Pompeii with an archaeologist who has in-depth knowledge of the excavations. You’ll take a peek inside private homes, villas and even an ancient restaurant to discover what life was like before Vesuvius eruption froze the city in time.

After visiting Pompeii, you’ll take a scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast to picturesque Positano. Here you will have time for lunch and exploring before returning to Rome.

Note – many people use this tour as a transfer service to Positano. Simply make a note on your booking if you wish to do this.

This is a full day (13 hour) tour departing from Rome at 07:15 am. From November to March this tour visits Sorrento in place of Positano where many of the shops and restaurants have closed for the season.

Why we like it

If you only have one day to reach the southern part of Italy while visiting Rome, this tour gives you a taste of the salty sea air of Positano and the history of Pompeii. It’s a small group tour so you won’t be part of a big crowd.

  • Guided tour of Pompeii with an archaeologist
  • Skip the line entry
  • Scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast
  • Free time for lunch, shopping or swimming in Positano

After exploring the site, you transfer to Sorrento where you can enjoy the relaxing seaside vibes and views before returning to Rome.

This is a full day (12 hour) tour departing from Rome at 07:00am and there are daily departures.

This is a well designed (but most of all fun) tour delivered by passionate guides who bring the stories and history of Pompeii to life.

  • Tour leader plus archaeologist led tour of Pompeii
  • Free time in Sorrento with time for lunch and limoncello
  • Small group – avoid the crowds
  • Departures: Mon, Wed, Sat

This tour combines history and outdoor activity for a full day of fun exploring the destruction of Pompeii. This is a full day (12 hour) tour departing from Rome at 07:30 am. This tour runs daily in summer, with a reduced schedule in the winter months.

How to do a day trip from Rome to Pompeii on your own

If you’re on a budget or simply like traveling on your own steam, this section explains how to organize your day trip to Pompeii from Rome on your own.

You will need to think about transport, tickets and tours – recommended because the site is poorly marked. We have outlined the options for all of these factors below.

READ: our guide on How to buy tickets for Pompeii

Rome to Pompeii by train

With several departures per hour, the fast frecciarossa trains from Rome to Naples followed by the local train to Pompeii is the best way to do a day trip on your own. Your travel time from Roma Termini to Pompeii is around 2 hours and the station for Pompeii is right outside the main entrance.

Take the fast train to Napoli Centrale from Roma Termini – this takes around 70 minutes and will cost from €13 one way and €27 return if you purchase tickets with a set date and time in advance. You can purchase tickets on your day of travel but you will often pay a higher base fare.

We recommend Omio to book your train and transport travel within Italy because it is has schedules, pricing and tickets for both major train operators in Italy and is easy to use

At Naples, you need to transfer to the Circumvesuviana local railway downstairs at Napoli Porta Garibaldi station to get to Pompeii. This is a local metro system train which you will need a separate ticket for. The fare is €3.20 one way and you can buy your ticket at the office next to the platform. There is no need to buy these tickets in advance.

The Circumvesuviana trains start running at 06:10 am with departures every half hour or so. The journey takes around 35 minutes. Please note this local train can be crowded and is not air-conditioned. It is also notorious for pickpockets so keep your belongings safe.

You need the Pompeii Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri stop. It is a bit confusing because there are several Pompeii stations. Please ignore those, this is the one you need.

For timetable and ticketing information visit the Circumsvesuviana site here .

Returning to Rome from Pompeii

When it is time to return to Rome simply take the return Circumvesuviana train from Pompeii Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri stop and get off at Napoli Porta Garibaldi. From there head upstairs to the intercity train station. Services to Rome from Napoli Centrale depart regularly until around 20:15 pm. The last fast train to Rome is at 20:30 pm.

DIRECT SERVICE FROM Rome TO Pompeii (LIMITED)

From August 2023 a new, limited service direct from Rome Termini to Pompeii is available. Running only on Sundays with one return trip available, it leaves Rome in the morning and returns 9 hours later. We recommend including a side trip to Naples or Sorrento as 9 hours is a bit much for even the most enthusiastic Pompeii visitor.

Shuttle bus from Rome to Pompeii

If you don’t want to bother with train transfers and ticketing you could always take a shuttle bus service from Rome . The bus leaves at 07:30 am from a departure point close to Rome Termini station.

Please note – this is simply a shuttle and not a tour so there will be minimal to no commentary.

The bus shuttle service operates daily – > click here for prices

Pompeii opening hours

1st April – 31st October

  • 09:00 – 19:00 [last entry at 17:30]

1st November – 31st March

  • 09:00 – 17:00 [last entry at 15:30]

The site is open daily except for 1 January, 1 May, 25 December. Exhibit and other closure information can be found here

Pompeii tickets and tours

Like most of the major attractions in Italy, there can often be long lines for entry. While Pompeii is not as crowded as the Vatican Museums or Colosseum, if there are cruise ships in port in Naples you can still wait a long time for tickets. If you want to skip the line at Pompeii it is best to book these tickets in advance.

Here are the best sites to get your tickets for Pompeii:

  • Pompeii Scavi official website – ticketing is managed by Ticketone – a booking fee applies
  • Pompeii fast track entry on GetYourGuide – authorized ticket partner – a booking fee applies

Note – Adult ticket prices start from €16. The site is free to enter for children of all nationalities under the age of 18 – you will need to show passport or ID for this. Other discounts and offers apply for EU nationals. Check the Pompeii website for details

Do I need to join a tour or can I explore on my own?

We think a tour is a good idea at Pompeii. The various buildings and highlights are poorly marked and described so without a tour you’re basically wandering around not knowing what you are looking at and likely missing some of the most important and interesting aspects of Pompeii.

You will be offered tours when you arrive but you really have no way of knowing if they are any good. If you choose this option be mindful to look for a tour guide with a badge issued by the Region of Campania or book at the information desk at Porta Marina or Piazza Esedra. Note that these tours are private tours as the site itself does not offer tours.

We recommend booking your tours in advance and meeting the guide when you get to Pompeii. That way you can read reviews and find one that suits you and your plans for the day. We suggest:

  • 2 hour walking tour of Pompeii – departs at various intervals from 9.30 am, including the afternoon until to 3.00 pm, so you don’t need to be up too early in Rome. Prices from €43 per person
  • Archaeologist-led Pompeii tour – tour starting at 9:00 am, into the afternoon until 3.30 pm giving you time to explore Naples before returning to Rome – from €53
  • Small group tour of the Pompeii ruins – tour running at various times from 9.30 am through to 3.30 pm, guided by a professional archaeologist with no more than 20 people. Prices from €53. Spanish, German and French tours also available.

Another option is to download an audio guide. We suggest Rick Steves audio tour of Pompeii – more info but you can also rent an audioguide when you get there.

What else can we do before returning to Rome?

As mentioned above, many group tours offer an extra stop in Naples, Sorrento, or even a climb up Mount Vesuvius. If you wanted to do this yourself, that is possible too however it does make for a long day. Here are some options:

Pizza and sightseeing in Naples

Take the Circumvesuviana train back to Piazza Garibaldi.  Then head straight for Antica Pizzeria da Michele [Via Cesare Sersale, 1, Naples] where your Margherita pizza is made to perfection by the Condurro family – 5th generation pizza makers.

After a delicious lunch, you can explore Naples on foot before returning to Rome. Don’t miss – the grand sweeping Piazza del Plebiscito, the National Archaeological Museum, Palazzo Reale and the Duomo (Cathedral). Luckily if you need another slice of the delicious pizza before you go, your lunch stop is right near the train station.

Climb Vesuvius

Buses to Vesuvius depart from outside the Pompei Scavi Circumvesuviana station. Buses run every hour from 08:00 am to 15:00pm.  It takes about 50 minutes to reach the Vesuvius ticket office and costs €2.70 each way. You can buy tickets from the bus driver.

Once you reach the ticket office it is a 30 minute hike to the crater. There is an entrance fee of €10 to access the park which includes a guided tour. You can read more about the hiking trails and visitor information here .

Make sure to bring sturdy shoes, a hat and a jacket in the cooler months as winds can make it quite cold at the crater. The last bus departs Vesuvius for Pompeii at 17:40 pm

Wander Sorrento

Continue along the Circumvesuviana line from Pompeii to Sorrento. The journey takes around 30 minutes. In Sorrento , you can wander the town and enjoy views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius rising above Pompeii. Or, if you’re hungry, take the elevator down to Marina Grande and enjoy a seafood feast by the sea.

Famous for the delicious liqueur limoncello, in Sorrento, you can visit a secluded lemon grove where you can try and buy some to take back with you to Rome.

FAQ and Tips for visiting Pompeii

How long should we spend at Pompeii?

The minimum amount of time to spend at the site is 2 hours. This is enough to quickly see the highlights but not much more. Remember that Pompeii was a city home to over 17,000 people and the site itself covers 64 to 67 hectares (170 acres). You can easily spend 4-5 hours here if you are a history buff.

What are some of the must see highlights of Pompeii?

The amphitheatre, Villa of the Mysteries where you can see one of Pompeii’s famous wall paintings, Stabian Baths – richly decorated Roman bathing house, Temple of Isis – an incredibly well preserved temple dedicated to the Egyptian goddess, House of the Small Fountain with gorgeous frescoes and paintings. I really enjoyed the reconstructed vineyard which actually produces wine.

What should we wear and take?

The site at Pompeii is exposed with very little shade and cover. Check the weather before you go and make sure you are prepared. In summer you should take a hat, sunscreen and wear light, loose clothing. When it is cooler bring a rain coat and umbrella.

No matter the season you will need sturdy shoes suitable for walking, plenty of water and snacks. There are minimal facilities at the site to purchase food and drinks.

Please note – bags, backpacks, luggage, or cases with dimensions exceeding 30x30x15cm are not allowed. You can leave large bags (but not your luggage) at the cloakroom services provided at the entrances.

Is the site suitable for children?

Yes, it is. We took our then 4 year old twins to Pompeii and enjoyed our time there. The site is great for exploring and safe for little ones as there are no cars. We were there in Spring and the weather was perfect. I’d probably reconsider with little ones during summer when it gets very hot.

You can bring your stroller and there are specially marked routes suitable for prams as well as three baby change facilities – Via dell’Abbondanza, Via di Nola, and at the corner of Via Stabiana and Via della Fortuna.

Older children will no doubt be fascinated by the history of the volcano and city. If you think you need some help firing their imaginations, you could join a family friendly tour of Pompeii with guides who know just how to bring the site to life for little minds.

Enjoy Pompeii!

Your Pompeii day trip will no doubt be one of the highlights of your trip to Italy. One of the most unique historic sites in the world, it is such a treat to see this city frozen in time.

We are sure your visit to Pompeii will stir in you a curiosity to find out more about the cities and culture of Ancient Rome. There are many Roman sites to visit throughout Italy however Pompeii is no doubt the most famous and intriguing.
