Planning a Trip to Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island walkway.

There are many things to consider when planning a trip to Sanibel Island.

It is important to note that the island experienced significant damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022. Many businesses are still rebuilding.

As a starting point for planning your trip, consider your answers to the following questions:

  • Are you traveling with kids, a partner, or solo?
  • Where are you coming from?
  • How many days are you planning on staying in the area?
  • What are you most interested in seeing on your visit?

Beach with people sitting umbrellas on the shore.

Keep your answers to these questions in mind as you start to make plans. Sanibel Island has great options for everyone, whether you are looking for a solo trip, a romantic getaway, or fun for the whole family.

Let’s review some of the basics for planning your trip!

How to Get to Sanibel Island

Packed and open suitcase.

You can get to Sanibel Island by driving or by flying to one of the region’s airports.

If you are flying in, you will also need to consider renting a car or taking a taxi from the airport to get to the island. The closest airport is on the mainland, 28 miles away.

Bridge over the water.

Tampa   is about 3 hours north of Sanibel Island via I-75 South.  Orlando   is about 4 hours away, with the most direct route being I-4 West to Highway 17 South to I-75 South. From   Miami , it is a 3-hour drive to Sanibel Island via I-75 North.

Airplanes at the airport.

If you are flying in for your trip, the most convenient airport to arrive at near Sanibel Island is Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers.

Southwest Florida International Airport is located 28 miles from Sanibel Island, with many major airlines flying to and from it. Naples Municipal Airport, Punta Gorda Airport, and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport are all options within approximately 100 miles of Sanibel Island.

How to Get Around

Person on a bike.

You may be wondering the best way to get around while on Sanibel Island due to its size and separation from the mainland.

Getting around by car, bike, or walking can all be good options depending on where you want to go and how much you want to see during your visit.

Bridge over the water.

If you are driving in for your trip to Sanibel Island, having a car makes it easy to plan day trips to nearby areas like Captiva Island or Fort Myers . Though, it can be difficult and costly to find parking throughout the island.

You must pay to park at local beaches. Trips from the mainland require you to cross the Sanibel Island Causeway, which has a $6 toll ($9 if your vehicle doesn’t have a transponder.)

Couple biking on Sanibel Island.

Riding a bike is the most convenient way to get around Sanibel Island. The island has over 20 miles of paved bike paths that can be utilized to access attractions and beaches.

Bikes are also an affordable option—many hotels and vacation rentals in the area have free rentals you can use during your stay.

If your accommodations don’t have bike rentals, shops on the island rent out bikes and helmets at reasonable prices.

Sanibel Island pathway to beach.

Depending on where you book your hotel or vacation rental, walking can be a convenient and free way to travel to Sanibel Island beaches, attractions, and restaurants.

If this sounds ideal for your trip, book accommodations nearby your top places to visit.

Trip Duration

Sanibel Island shells 2023.

Sanibel Island is full of things to do, so you may be wondering how many days you should plan to be on this island paradise. The answer depends on how you want to pace your trip.

If you are short on time or prefer to see the island at a faster pace, 2 to 3 days will allow you to see all the top hits, if you move quickly.

In general, if you want to see top sights while still having ample time to relax at the beach, a 5 to 7-day stay is optimal.

Sanibel Island homes.

Of course, if you have the time, you can easily fill your schedule with over a week of fun and relaxation on Sanibel Island.

When to Visit

Palm trees at sunrise.

Sanibel Island is a year-round destination thanks to Florida’s sub-tropical climate.

Like most of Florida, Sanibel Island is known for having hot and humid summers, with high temperatures averaging 90+ degrees and lows in the mid-70s.

Hurricane season runs from June through November and is also an important consideration to keep in mind while deciding when to visit Sanibel Island.

Birds on the beach in Sanibel.

Ideal times to visit include October through May. These months tend to have optimal weather with less humidity and temperature highs in the upper-70s.

The weather in the winter season during December, January, and February can be a bit colder, with highs in the low-70s and lows averaging 60 degrees. But there can be a couple of cold snaps mixed in.

J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge

U.S. News Insider Tip: For the best birding experience, visit Wildlife Drive and its trails at low tide. Or take a sunset kayak tour with Tarpon Bay Explorers. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

Named for a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist and conservationist, the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge occupies more than 6,400 acres on Sanibel and Captiva, plus offshore waters and islands. On Sanibel, it shelters mangrove forests, marshes and seagrass beds, as well as animals like alligators, bobcats and more than 240 species of birds. In fact, for herons, white pelicans , warblers and ospreys, this refuge is an important stop along their southern migratory path.

Bowman's Beach Bowman's Beach free

Situated on the west end of the island, Bowman's is well known for having beautiful, abundant shells. Recent travelers found the best method is to step waist-deep in the water and dig your feet into the sand to find the shells. (You may want to wear water shoes to protect your feet.) Or plan your shell hunt for low tide, especially after a storm.

Beachgoers routinely praised Bowman's for its excellent shelling, gorgeous sunsets and expansive sands that let visitors find their own spots with ease. Several also enjoyed riding their bikes to the beach, saying that the ride is easy along the nearby path. Other reviewers reported spotting dolphins and manatees.

Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum

The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum expanded in 2020 with 11 different aquarium exhibits on the ground floor showcasing mollusks, including a giant octopus, living shells and touch pools. Unfortunately, Hurricane Ian flooded that level, but the museum temporarily opened its original second-floor exhibits in February 2023. Its Great Hall of Shells showcases specimens from around the world and helps identify any treasures you might have uncovered at the nearby seashore. Popular exhibits include the sailors' valentines (19th-century shell art that Barbadian women designed for visiting sailors to take home to loved ones) and a depiction of what life was like for the Calusa Native Americans, who once lived near the Southwest Gulf and used shells for tools and building material.

Before the hurricane, travelers said the museum exceeded their expectations. They appreciated the hands-on exhibits and found the displays, as well as the museum employees, to be informative.

Captiva Island Captiva Island free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Take a short walk off the beach to roam the historic Chapel by the Sea and its cemetery. Here, visitors often leave seashells rather than flowers at headstones. In season, the chapel holds nondenominational Sunday religious services. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

Some people think of Sanibel and its quirky little sister island, Captiva, as interchangeable. True, they're both quiet spots with great shorelines and are connected by a short bridge, but there are a few differences. Here's a cheat sheet: Sanibel has better shelling on its beaches; quirkier Captiva is known for its water sports and destination resorts. Souvenir shopping on both islands is fairly evenly matched, but Sanibel has an inside edge on art galleries. In short, consider spending your days on Sanibel, then hop over to Captiva for a boat excursion or dinner on the waterfront.

Lighthouse Beach Park & Fishing Pier Lighthouse Beach Park & Fishing Pier free

The Sanibel Lighthouse has been in service since 1884 to light the entrance into San Carlos Bay. Now, this iconic Sanibel Island landmark on the island's eastern tip, nearly 140 years old, is a little worse for wear. One of its four legs got sheared off at the bottom by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. It has since been found and is being repaired, standing ever stronger as a symbol of island resiliency. The two picturesque, historic lighthouse keeper homes were swept away. The light tower serves as the centerpiece of a popular recreational area that fronts both the gulf and bay, now closed with no projected reopening date.

In addition to the lighthouse, this 32-acre is also home to Sanibel's most developed beach. It's popular with windsurfers, anglers and families, who take advantage of its picnic area, grills, shaded pavilions, restrooms, showers, bayside fishing pier and nature trail. Parking is $5 per hour, but cyclists and pedestrians can access it for free.

Sanibel Island Farmers Market Sanibel Island Farmers Market free

Like several businesses on Sanibel Island, the seasonal farmers market, which started in 2008 and featured more than 50 vendors, has temporarily relocated. Normally a Sunday morning fixture at the Sanibel City Hall grounds, the market currently sets up at the parking lot for Jerry's Foods on Periwinkle Way . It reopened in January 2023 in the smaller venue with 15 vendors. Owners intend to return to the market's traditional location as soon as the city gives the go-ahead.

Besides organic and other produce brought in from nearby fields, market vendors sell ready-made food from stands and food trucks, plus cheese, local seafood, flowers, plants, honey, beverages, baked goods, crafts and a wide variety of products. Recent visitors raved about the variety. The fresh-made guacamole was a hit with several.

Sanibel Historical Museum & Village Sanibel Historical Museum & Village

This historic village has been cobbled together since 1984. Of the complex's 10 buildings, nine were relocated from other parts of Sanibel to the present site so that they could be preserved. The buildings date from 1896 to 1927 and include a schoolhouse, several cottages, a tea room and a packing house. Each building has audio recordings to help tell the story of Sanibel's history, which spans hundreds of years. There's information about the Calusa tribes as well as Sanibel's fishermen and farmers. Currently, the village is undergoing rebuilding after Hurricane Ian with no set reopening date.

Travelers who visited before the hurricane were impressed with the museum. They enjoyed seeing the evolution of Sanibel over time and highly recommend watching the introductory video and taking the guided tour.

Blind Pass Beach Blind Pass Beach free

U.S. News Insider Tip: When the winds whip up, surfers head to Blind Pass Beach to catch the best waves on the islands. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

Among the first two public beach accesses to reopen in February 2023 during hurricane recovery, Blind Pass Beach spans across both Sanibel and Captiva islands. It's a great place to find shells, fish from the bridge, sunbathe or watch the sunset. One thing you might want to skip at this beach? Swimming. Blind Pass is susceptible to strong currents. Nevertheless, it's a favorite among vacationers for its beauty and excellent collection of shells. Visitors do warn, however, that parking is tricky and describe the facilities as average, as there are only restrooms and outdoor showers on the Captiva side.

Periwinkle Way Periwinkle Way free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Head to Jerry's Foods complex of shops for the most concentrated retail therapy right now, plus free Wi-Fi. The grocery store's restaurant is one of the island's best dining bargains. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

The island's main, two-lane thoroughfare is home to several restaurants and shopping opportunities, although many are still undergoing hurricane recovery following September 2022's Ian. So, there's no one reason to recommend you visit; there's a good chance you'll end up along Periwinkle at some point in time during your trip.

Tarpon Bay Explorers Tarpon Bay Explorers

U.S. News Insider Tip : Sunset is the best time for birdwatching at Tarpon Bay's rookeries, when ibises, pelicans, herons and cormorants come in to roost for the night. The company normally offers sunset paddling tours and nature cruises. – Chelle Koster Walton, Contributor, Travel

For more than 20 years, Tarpon Bay Explorers has been running the recreation concession for the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge at its Tarpon Bay Recreation Area campus, just a couple of miles from the refuge's main campus. On the banks of Tarpon Bay, the company currently rents kayak, canoes and stand-up paddleboards, and conducts kayaking and stand-up paddleboard tours into the bay and its offshoot, Commodore Creek Trail, through a mangrove canopy teeming with birds and fish.

BIG ARTS BIG ARTS

Artful communities with galleries and a once-vital performing arts scene, Sanibel and Captiva have concentrated their cultural offerings at the BIG ARTS campus. It first started at a grassroots level in 1979, and since has grown to inhabit a contemporary facility that debuted in 2021. Its high-tech performing arts hall hosts everything from film series to musical and theater performances. Note that the 2023 season for its Performing Arts Series has been canceled due to Hurricane Ian. Artists hailing from Florida and elsewhere mount their exhibits in the main and mezzanine art galleries, where you'll also find a lovely gift shop selling locally created works. BIG ARTS also hosts various workshops both in-person and via Zoom.

Visitors remark about the grandeur of BIG ARTS' performing arts hall and the quality of its visual art exhibits.

Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife

The Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife was founded by Shirley Walter in 1968 after she realized there was no facility on Sanibel to aid injured local wildlife. Since then, CROW has nursed thousands of animal patients and cared for more than 200 species. The clinic's specialists provide emergency medicine, surgery and rehabilitation to animals. Each year, they help about 5,000 animals. CROW is also a teaching hospital where veterinary students can hone their skills.

You don't have to be a wounded bird or student to visit. CROW's Visitor Education Center has interactive exhibits to teach visitors about the clinic's history and how the organization cares for animals. You can also attend daily presentations given by a staff member and an Animal Ambassador – recovered patients that cannot be released due to their injuries. Presentations explain how wildlife are rescued and give more information about the different patients. You can even go on a Wildlife Walk, which is a guided tour of the hospital. Note that programming will return gradually to CROW once it reopens its Visitor Education Center around mid-March 2023. (Currently, its gift shop has reopened.)
