Carry-on luggage: The rules you need to know before you fly

A guide to carry-on luggage size.

laptop and phone sit in an open brown duffel bag on the floor

Ever felt the panic surge as you approach the airport check-in , wondering if your bulging carry-on will survive the size test? This guide cuts to the chase! Learn carry-on size rules, weight limits, and what to pack in your carry-on luggage.

What is carry-on luggage?

Carry-on luggage, often referred to as hand luggage, cabin baggage, or a carry-on bag, is designed to fit in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you on an airplane. The exact size allowed can vary depending on the airline, but generally, there are standard dimensions that most airlines adhere to.

What are the dimensions for carry-on luggage?

The typical dimensions for carry-on luggage are:

  • Domestic flights (U.S. airlines): 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm)
  • International flights: 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 cm)

These measurements include the handles and wheels. It’s important to check your specific airline’s regulations, as there can be slight variations.

What is the allowed weight for carry-on luggage?

The weight limit for carry-on luggage can differ between airlines and countries. Generally, the weight limit ranges from 15 to 22 pounds (7 to 10 kg). However, airlines like Delta, Southwest, and JetBlue don’t have weight limits for carry-on bags on domestic flights (as long as you can lift it!). Some airlines are stricter about weight than others, so it’s essential to verify this information before packing.

What are the carry-on luggage rules?

Understanding the rules for carry-on luggage can save you from unexpected surprises at the airport. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Size and weight restrictions: Adhere to the size and weight limits specified by your airline.
  • Personal items: Most airlines allow an additional personal item, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack, alongside your carry-on luggage.
  • Liquids: Follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, gels, and aerosols. Containers must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, placed in a 1-quart-sized, clear, resealable bag, with one bag per passenger.
  • Prohibited items: Sharp objects, firearms, and other dangerous items are not allowed in carry-on luggage.
  • Electronic devices: Ensure your electronic devices are charged, as you may be asked to turn them on during security checks.

What is allowed in carry-on luggage?

Being aware of what you can pack in your carry-on can make your trip smoother. Here’s a list of commonly allowed items:

  • Clothing and personal items: Shirts, pants, underwear, toiletries (following the 3-1-1 rule).
  • Electronic devices: Laptops, tablets, cameras, and e-readers.
  • Medication: Prescribed and over-the-counter medications.
  • Food: Solid food items are generally allowed, but check for specific regulations on international flights.
  • Travel documents: Passport , boarding pass, and other necessary documents.

What are the carry-on luggage sizes for major airlines?

While the dimensions for carry-on luggage are fairly standard, they can vary depending on the airline. Here are the allowed carry-on luggage sizes for some of the major airlines:

  • American Airlines: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm)
  • Delta Air Lines: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm)
  • United Airlines: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm)
  • Southwest Airlines: 24 x 16 x 10 inches (61 x 41 x 25 cm)
  • JetBlue Airways: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm)
  • Alaska Airlines: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm)
  • Spirit Airlines: 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm)
  • Frontier Airlines: 24 x 16 x 10 inches (61 x 41 x 25 cm)
  • British Airways: 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm)
  • Air France: 21.7 x 13.8 x 9.9 inches (55 x 35 x 25 cm)
  • Lufthansa: 21.7 x 15.7 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 cm)
  • Emirates: 22 x 15 x 8 inches (55 x 38 x 20 cm)
  • Qatar Airways: 20 x 15 x 10 inches (50 x 37 x 25 cm)

Always check with your specific airline before you travel, as regulations can change and sometimes vary even within the same airline based on the route or class of service.

What happens if my carry-on is too big?

If your carry-on exceeds the size or weight limits, you may be required to check it in, which could incur additional fees.

How strict are airlines with carry-on sizes?

This varies by airline and even by airport. Some airlines are very strict and will measure and weigh your carry-on, while others are more lenient.

What is a personal item?

A personal item is a small bag that airlines allow you to bring on the plane in addition to your carry-on luggage. It typically fits under the seat in front of you and can be a purse, backpack, laptop bag, briefcase, or even a small duffel bag. The size restrictions for personal items vary by airline, but they are generally smaller than carry-on luggage.

Can I bring duty-free items in my carry-on?

Yes, duty-free items purchased at the airport after security checks are usually allowed in your carry-on.

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget life’s essentials. When you wake up and head out the door, it’s a given you’ll have your wallet, keys, phone, and backpack. While simple necessities, these items ensure a productive day and getting from point A to point B. Misplacing even one can lead to frustration and lost time.

The Apple AirTag avoids that scenario, with a small medallion you can attach to almost anything. No more lost keys and being stuck far from home. The tag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal, recognizable by your iPhone, leading you to your lost goods. That’s indispensable when you’re on the go.

If you don't want to pay that extra fee for a checked bag (so fair btw), you're going to want some TSA-approved travel bottles and compression cubes.

1. A waterproof Kindle  for all you bookworms who love to read any chance you get. Instead of carrying a few of your favorite novels with you (ugh, heavvvvvy) just take this handy device that can hold all the books you can dream of!

Reviewer holding up their Kindle

Here's what Haley Zovickian has to say about it: "I recently bought a Kindle and it has, no exaggeration, revolutionized my life. I love mine for so many reasons — it's truly helped me incorporate my love of reading into my often hectic life, and all my titles literally live inside of this half-pound wonder gadget, so I can switch between books super easily. For traveling, this is a literal dream. I don't have to pick between titles and then regret the entire trip that I didn't bring the one I left at home — and, as any book lover knows, traveling with books is heavy as hell, and the Kindle literally completely eliminates that weight. Traveling will never be the same for me."

Promising review: "I LOVE reading and being able to access a book anywhere with this thing. It is easy to navigate, very easy to read and adjust the brightness or how warm the light is. It doesn't auto adjust, but I don't need that feature. I've read in bright sunlight to dark rooms, and it's always been so clear. You can adjust the font and use the library to search whatever books you want. Makes packing books for traveling very easy. Battery life lasts me two weeks if I'm reading every day for a few hours. You have to have internet and it only shows books. This is not a tablet to surf the internet or use other apps on." — R@L0

Get it from Amazon for $149.99+  (available in 8GB and 16GB sizes, three colors, and with or without ads).

2. A set of travel compression cubes  so you can make better use of your carry-on suitcase and fit more outfits because you can never have too many. All you have to do is pack your clothes, zip it up, compress the bag, and it's ready to go!

a reviewer photo of seven different shirts

Promising review: "Must-have traveling accessory. Best way to pack a suitcase! I’ll never go back to stuffing everything in on its own. These compartments held way more than I imagined and kept me organized. I will definitely add more to my collection. Makes a great gift for frequent travelers too!" — Lisa

Get them from Amazon for $18.95+ (available in 11 styles and in packs of two, three, or six).

3. A shoe bag  because there's nothing worse than opening your bag to see dirt all over your brand-new vacation dress. It'll keep at least three pairs of shoes compact (some reviewers say it can fit five!) instead of rolling around in your carry-on taking up unnecessary space.

reviewer image of the shoe bag in pink, filled with shoes

Promising review:  "You can totally fit three pairs of shoes in this! (Size 6.5 female shoe, fit heels, wedges, and sandals.) I bought two and will absolutely be buying more for my husband. 10/10 would recommend! I travel frequently, and I always overpack; this helped cut down space and stress immensely! " — Taylor

Get it from Amazon for $22.99  (available in nine colors and patterns).

4. A 50-count set of  laundry soap sheets  if you need take your clothes for a wash but don't want to buy a gigantic jug of detergent that's probably going to end up in the trash or left behind. Plus you'll be able to rewear your outfits several times so you won't have to pack as many!

These work best with hand washing!

Promising review:  "This came SO in handy during my vacation to Europe! I was making lots of different stops to places with different types of weather. With these laundry soap sheets I was able to wash my clothes in the sink — letting me pack just the right amount of clothes for all the different places I went." — Katie Fujarski

Get a pack of 50 from Amazon for  $12.95 .

5. A jewelry organizer  to bring all your bling with you because it's not a vacation without it! You'll be able to bring all your fave bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and rings because there's a designated spot for all of them. Plus this takes up a heck of a lot less space compared to jewelry boxes.

Promising review:  "Best jewelry travel pouch ever. Plenty of room for all my travel jewelry needs. Half the size of previous pouches I have tried and holds more than any of them. " — T Rex Mom

Get it from Amazon for $15.99+ (available in two sizes and 12 colors).

6. A sturdy, lightweight  eight-compartment pill organizer  so you can bring your medication with you on the go — without the bulkiness of the bottles. It comes with eight compartments so you can carry your daily and emergency pills in here. Runny nose? Upset stomach? Headache? Have no fear, your meds are here!

reviewer image of the pill organizer in green, full of different pills

Promising review: "My husband and I travel a lot and take a number of prescription drugs. It was always a hassle accessing our medication when needed, so I purchased this organizer to make things easier. I used a label maker and labeled each little compartment and it has performed wonderfully. I highly recommend this organizer to anyone who travels and needs medications throughout the day." — Jacqueline

Get a three-pack from Amazon for $8.97+  (available in two color combos).

7. A compact, all-in-one  international travel adapter  so you don't have to buy or bring separate adapters when you travel outside of the country. It comes with two USB outlets, one USB-C outlet, and one socket — what more do you need?!

The black charger with USB cords coming out of it

The charger can be used in Mexico, Canada, the UK, the UAE, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Promising review:  "LOVE this adapter! I travel from time to time internationally and have always used just the 'standard' adapters found in airports. Could not pass up the opportunity to purchase this one after reading the reviews. Exceeded my expectations of what it was capable of. Used on a recent trip to Germany and it handled everything needed — laptop, cell phone (USB ports are so very welcome), alarm clock, dryer, etc. Did not miss a beat on the power provided. And, it is also attractive looking ;-) Thank you for making such a great, dependable product!" — Monkey

Get it from Amazon for  $19.99 .

8. A  hands-free (rotating!) phone mount  to watch your downloaded movies or shows on your phone rather than you lugging that big ol' laptop around in your bag. You can mount it onto the tray or even your carry-on so you can keep yourself entertained while you're at the gate two hours too early.

A phone mounted to the back of an airplane tray table

Promising review : "I bought this nifty gadget about six months ago for a multi-leg, ultra long haul trip and it more than held up the entire duration . I was able to finagle it to fit the tray tables on different planes and like others, I find the height just nice when clamped onto a stowed tray table . It also works on my roller carry-on handle during layovers. However, I find myself using it a lot outside of travel too! Work-wise, I've clamped it onto my office desk shelving to hold my phone at eye level beside my computer . At home, I simply clamped it to a deck of cards and it turns into a versatile stand that I can place on any flat surface. Heck, I've been using it to hold my phone comfortably at eye level while watching videos in bed. It's extremely well-built and I find myself fidgeting with it all the time. Thus far it still feels solid and I don't anticipate breaking it any time soon. Even if it does break, I'll be happy to buy another one or two of it!" — Earendil

Get it from Amazon for $12.57+  (available in eight colors).

9. Silicone travel bottles  because hotel toiletries just don't work as well as your fave products. Every bottle is TSA-friendly, so just fill each of these babies up with you hair or skincare products and you're ready to go!

reviewer holding the silicone bottles

*Plus,* decanting your creams and liquids into these babies will free up space in your carry-on and spare you weight.

PS: It also comes with pre-printed labels and a handy, clear zipper pouch!

Promising review:  "Just took a trip to the Dominican Republic and used carry-on luggage only throughout the entire trip, never once was questioned about the size. The bag they are in seems thin but it worked great to put bottles back in as well as some smaller items fit in the bag too, like lip gloss, mascara, and such. The holes are big enough to get your product in to the bottles without any complications.  My fiancé and myself had plenty of shampoo, conditioner, sunblock and lotion for seven days.  Highly recommend these bottles, they are perfect for carry-ons!!" — Stephanie Miller

Get a set of four 3-ounce bottles from Amazon for  $14.99+  (available in a variety of sizes and colors).

10. A packing checklist  so you'll be able to travel worry-free because you know you packed all the essentials. Just refer to this list to make sure you're not packing anything you don't *need* because that'll only end up taking up extra space in your bag.

packing checklist that says pack this

Promising review: "We travel frequently and have two children. As any parent knows, packing for yourself and your children can be overwhelming (especially for a trip longer than a few days ). I have found this list to be a lifesaver and I also give it as a gift for other traveling families. It is easy to plan, organize, and list out items that are easily forgotten. You can also list the quantity of each item needed. It has a variety of clothing options and space to add more. Overall, wonderful purchase and has likely saved me many forgotten items!" — I-really-bought-this

Get it from Amazon for $7+  (available in two colors and a roadtrip option).

11. A blissfully comfy, ergonomic  Trtl neck pillow  to prevent your head from rolling down while you sleep on that uncomfy plane seat. It also acts as a scarf because as we all know, those planes get chilly. Plus it'll take up way less space in your bag compared to those bulky U-shaped pillows.

reviewer using grey neck pillow to prop head up on the

It also easily attaches to backpacks and luggage handles, weighs less than half a pound, and is machine washable!

Promising review: "The Trtl Travel Pillow has been a game-changer for my journeys. Its super soft neck support and added shoulder support create a comfort haven. The cozy cushioning makes it feel like a cloud for my neck. I love how lightweight and easy to carry it is, making it a perfect travel companion. The fact that it's machine washable is a huge plus but after a wash it was not exactly like the new one. Overall, it's become an essential item for my travels, providing unparalleled comfort and convenience. Highly recommended!" — Kasra

Get it from Amazon for  $62.86+  (available in four colors).

12. A carry-on friendly travel Gillette razor  because bringing a full razor means extra space being taken up. It comes with a teeny tiny handle and avocado-oil infused lubrication!

reviewer holding mini razor

It comes with one handle and one blade refill!

Promising review : "I got this for a vacation and it was great! The little carrying container is awesome, and keeps you from having a weird, loose razor floating around in your suitcase. Plus the heads are the same as a regular-sized razor , so you can keep using it when that one is worn out!" — Tegan H

Get it from Amazon for $9.99  (also available in a two-pack).

13. A compact, carry-on friendly  portable espresso maker  if you're just one of those people who *needs* coffee to survive — can't say no to a cup of joe! You can use   Nespresso pods  with it and is 100% hand-operated, meaning you don't need batteries or electricity.

hand holding the espresso maker, showing it's about the size of a travel cup

Promising review: "The best thing for traveling ever!! I have to have espresso every morning and most small hotels and gas stations don't have espresso coffee so this is perfect! Easy to use. The cleaning takes 30 seconds; just rinse with water and let it dry." — Joanna Verdeja

Get it from Amazon for $54.90  (and here are some Nespresso pods to go with it).

14. A Dagne Dover carryall duffle bag  that's literally practicality at its finest. the bag

BuzzFeed Shopping editor  Emma McAnaw owns this very bag and raves about it: " I use this every time I travel — and I never, I mean NEVER, check bags. I even took this with me to Amsterdam and easily packed about four sweaters, DOC MARTENS, and all my undies and toiletries. To be fair, I wore the same pants for four days (I am cheap, guys), but I never felt like I needed more space. And yes — even Spirit lets me take this ."

Promising review : "LOVE this bag!! It's the perfect size for me. Fits perfectly under an airplane seat and has ample room for all my carry-on stuff/ simple weekend getaway. I also love how it slides onto my roller bag. Did I mention that I get LOTS of compliments on it, too??" — ChicagoJM

Reviewer wearing the hairbrella

Hairbrella  is a Black-owned small business that specializes in hats that protect hair from all kinds of weather.

Promising review : "Works like a charm! So...of course the day I get my hair done, an unexpected torrential downpour occurs and I have NO umbrella. But...I DID have my Hairbrella in my bag! This was the first time I would get to try it out since I purchased it so I was REALLY hoping it would live up to its hype. I loosely pinned my hair up with a few bobby pins, secured that sucka in place and took off! While I looked like I just exited a dunk tank after my valiant sprint to my car, my hair was BONE DRY!!! 🙌🏾 Not a drop of moisture hit my hair. Hairbrella is the TRUTH!!!" — Lina

Get it from Amazon for $44+  (available in 14 colors).

pink cloth with dark makeup on it

Promising review : "This is incredible! I can't believe how well this works! I travel a lot for work and usually take makeup remover wipes because of the liquid restrictions for travel, but they are expensive and heavy. I have been using this cloth all week and LOVE IT! A bit of warm water and everything comes off in a few easy swipes. I am super excited to travel with this. It weighs nothing and rolls up to take very little space. I am ordering another for my mom who also travels. Highly recommend!" — KT

17. A tried-and-true  Tide stain-removing pen  for your little ~oopsies~ when you don't have a washing machine on standby. Plus it's so tiny, you'll be able to fit it into any bag even if you swear you literally have no room left.

Promising review: "This amazing little stain stick can save the day! It is easy to use and provides amazing results. I keep one in my purse, in a suitcase when traveling, and in the car . 18. A Hackwith Design House shirt  if packing light isn't quite your forte. Instead of bringing five tops, you just need this one! You can wear this versatile baby five different ways and you'll have a new 'fit every day.

a model wearing the black long-sleeved wrap top in three ways: off the shoulder, tied in the front with a square neck, and tied in the back with a V-neck in front

Hackwith Design House is a woman-owned small apparel business that creates many pieces made-to-order. This shirt can be worn as a V-neck, off-the-shoulder, boatneck, V-back, and even open as a jacket.

Promising review: "I’m being honest when I tell you this is the most 'worth-it' top around. I read a review from some frequent flyer who claims this is her go-to for flying. She said aside from the top’s flexibility – which allows much less packing as the top itself looks and behaves like four shirts and a jacket – it’s a savior on planes because it allows you to get into a usually overheated plane, and to weather the transition to iceberg that happens about twenty minutes into most flights, and it holds its shape and looks great. I was skeptical, as I do not have the money to blow on someone else’s opinion, but my husband told me to try it as I have the same issues with temps. Long story short, I got it. It’s a gorgeous fabric despite my usually hating the ribbed thing. It’s nice. REALLY nice. Yes, it’s extraordinarily flexible, and yes, it’s like a jacket,. There is a travel shirt Santa Claus. Ordering in the off-white now. Glad I read the article, and glad I bought the shirt. You should too." — Mary B.

Get it from Hackwith Design House for $145  (available in women's sizes XS–4X and in three colors).

19. A water-resistant  Neutrogena SPF 50 face and body stick sunscreen  that'll have you sauntering through security knowing that your bag will not be pulled aside because it's solid and TSA approved!

model applying solid sunscreen to face

BuzzFeed Shopping editor Elizabeth Lilly brought this on an international trip and loved it: "I first bought this for a weeklong Croatian vacation last year when I did carry-on, and as long as you are *thoroughly* reapplying, this stuff stays on pretty well. On a beach club afternoon, I did haphazardly reapply and missed a strip on one arm, but I tend to do that with spray-on or lotion sunscreen, too. Since then, I've packed this for any trip I've been on , including a two-day Disneyland trip where I toted this around in my bag and shared with friends. I sometimes carry it with me in my purse on my everyday adventures because I know it's so easy to apply. Also worth mentioning...I am about the palest lady you've ever seen and swear by daily application of sunscreen. But when on a beach trip, I'm constantly swimming in the water and sweating. So yeah, this stuff works.  And if you're a bit hesitant about jumping on the solid sunscreen bandwagon, you can pack a stick of this, knowing you have enough sun protection to get you through to finding some spray-on or lotion SPF at your destination."

Get it from Amazon for $9.88 .

20. A lightweight  money belt  because if you're going to bring a belt, it should be this one. It has a hidden zip-up pocket so you can keep your bills tucked away — there will be NO pickpocketing on this trip!

Model putting a $100 bill into the concealed zipper belt

Promising review: "Wore this belt on a recent 10-day trip, with several hundred dollars neatly folded in its full-length zippered pocket. The bills (USD) had to be folded lengthwise, in thirds, and for practical reasons, in stacks of 4–5 (or less). My belt had room for four such stacks, so theoretically $2,000 could be comfortably carried in complete concealment. The nylon buckle was perfectly adequate for its purpose, and nothing about the belt would indicate its hidden purpose. Well worth it." — Tony B.

Get it from Amazon for $17.99+  (available for pant sizes 20"–50" and in six styles).

Carry-on Luggage Size and Weight Limits by Airline (2024)

Text Callout : Key Takeaways - Carry-on Luggage Sizes

If you're traveling with carry-on luggage and/or a personal item , you'll need to adhere to size restrictions in the same way you do with checked bags . These rules include the dimensions of your carry-on bag and, in some scenarios, even the weight.

What size luggage is a carry-on?

While carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline, several major carriers go by these dimensions.

Airlines calculate carry-on luggage size measurements using two methods:

  • Height by width by depth:  Most – but not all – airlines measure bags by inches or centimeters using this formula: height by width by depth, such as 22 x 14 x 9 inches. (Note: The dimensions listed below, which are given according to that formula, may differ slightly from the way each individual airline formats its size requirements.)
  • Linear inches:  A few airlines have linear inch restrictions for carry-on baggage, meaning the airline gives one number for the total of all three dimensions. As long as the combined height, width and depth don't exceed that number, you're in the clear.

Can a 24-inch bag be a carry-on?

Yes, a 24-inch bag can be used as a carry-on suitcase when flying with the following airlines: Frontier, Southwest and Sun Country . However, if you're shopping for new carry-on luggage, it's best to opt for something that meets the requirements for most major airlines (22 x 14 x 9 inches or smaller).

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

Most major domestic airlines do not impose a weight limit on carry-on bags; however, several international airlines have weight restrictions for carry-on luggage and, in some cases, personal items.

Carry-on vs. personal item: What's the difference?

A carry-on bag is typically stored in a plane's overhead bin, while a personal item should fit under the seat in front of you. Most airlines allow economy passengers to bring one carry-on and one personal item – such as an underseat bag – at no extra cost.

Carry-on luggage sizes by airline

Click on the major domestic and international airlines below to see their carry-on luggage size restrictions in inches for economy passengers – and note that any handles and wheels on your bags count toward size limits as well.

Alaska Airlines

See all Alaska Airlines carry-on policies.

Allegiant Air

The fee is often around $20 if you pay for your carry-on baggage at the time of booking; it costs a hefty $45 if you add a carry-on bag later – and up to $75 at the gate.

See all Allegiant Air carry-on policies.

American Airlines

The above rules also apply to basic economy tickets.

See all American Airlines carry-on policies.

Delta Air Lines

Note that if you're flying to or from Beijing or Shanghai, there is a 22-pound weight limit for a carry-on; for Singapore, there is a 15-pound limit.

See all Delta Airlines carry-on policies.

Frontier Airlines

There are two instances where the carry-on bag fee is waived:

  • You're an elite member of the  FRONTIER Miles rewards program .
  • You bought a specialty ticket like the WORKS bundle.

Also note that carry-on bag fees, which typically start at around $30, depend on your destination, and that prices are cheapest if you add baggage when you make your booking. You'll pay more to add it later, especially if you do so at the airport. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to purchase a checked bag instead of a carry-on.

See all Frontier Airlines carry-on policies.

Hawaiian Airlines

See all Hawaiian Airlines carry-on policies.

If you booked a Blue Basic ticket, you're only permitted to bring a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you. If you bring a carry-on bag, you must pay $65 to check it at the gate (or up to $180 if you've already checked two other bags). This will change on Sept. 6, 2024, when JetBlue will begin offering one free carry-on bag to all Blue Basic customers, regardless of purchase date.

Currently, select customers with Blue Basic fares can bring carry-on bags for free. These include:

  • Active U.S. military personnel
  • Unaccompanied minors
  • Customers flying to London

If you purchase a higher-class seat or if you reach Mosaic status on JetBlue's TrueBlue rewards program , you can also bring a carry-on bag for free on a Blue Basic ticket.

See all JetBlue carry-on policies.

Southwest Airlines

See all Southwest Airlines carry-on policies.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit's carry-on bag fees vary between flights, but they tend to start at around $25 to $30 for U.S. domestic flights. If you need to bring carry-on luggage, it's always cheapest to pay for it when you first book your flight. It will cost you more to add a bag afterward – and at least double the initial fee if you do it at the airport.

See all Spirit Airlines carry-on policies.

Sun Country Airlines

The Sun Country Airlines fee for a carry-on bag is around $30 if you pay for it when booking, or more if you add it later.

See all Sun Country carry-on policies.

United Airlines

There's one notable exception for carry-on baggage with United: Passengers with a basic economy ticket can only take one personal item on board – no carry-on bag. This policy applies to travelers flying basic economy domestically or between the U.S. and Canada. If you have a basic economy ticket and are going to Central or South America (including Mexico) or taking trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flights, you can bring a full-size carry-on bag.

See all United Airlines carry-on policies.

Aer Lingus' carry-on policy depends on where you're flying. For trans-Atlantic flights, you can bring one carry-on bag within the dimensions above, plus a small personal item for free. If you're flying within Europe on Aer Lingus, the rules are a bit different: You'll have to pay a fee to bring a carry-on with you on board, starting at 5.99 euros. However, you can check that same bag for free.

If you're flying Aer Lingus Regional (a service with smaller planes, flying mostly around Ireland and the U.K.), a smaller carry-on limit applies: 18.5 x 13 x 8 inches, with a weight limit of 15 pounds.

See all Aer Lingus carry-on policies.

All Aeroméxico customers can bring a standard carry-on bag and a personal item on board. Be careful with the weight limit, though: For international flights or basic fare flights within Mexico, these two items combined cannot weigh more than 22 pounds. So, if your carry-on bag weighs 15 pounds, for example, your personal item cannot be more than 7 pounds.

See all Aeroméxico carry-on policies.

While there's no weight limit for carry-on luggage, Air Canada says your carry-on bag should be light enough that it can easily be lifted into the overhead bin. Also note that airport purchases (for example, larger duty-free items) count toward your baggage limit.

See all Air Canada carry-on policies.

Note that both your personal item and carry-on bag (referred to as "hand baggage") combined must not weigh more than 26 pounds if you're traveling economy. The weight limit is 40 pounds for premium economy and other higher-class cabins.

See all Air France carry-on policies.

All Nippon Airways

A variety of personal items (think a handbag and umbrella) are permitted as long as they fit under the seat in front of you; this includes any items purchased at the airport.

See all All Nippon Airways carry-on policies.

British Airways

If airline staff put a yellow tag on your bag, it should be stored under the seat in front of you.

See all British Airways carry-on policies.

Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific has shifted from a weight allowance to a piece allowance, and this policy varies by itinerary. Passengers are generally permitted to bring one carry-on bag plus a small personal item (and assistive devices like a walking stick), but it's best to check your booking carefully to confirm the exact allowance. You're asked to check in any baggage that's too heavy to lift into the overhead compartment.

See all Cathay Pacific carry-on policies.

Since easyJet is a budget airline, standard fares only allow customers to bring one personal item (called a "small cabin bag") aboard for free. Fees for standard carry-on bags are between 5.99 and 32.99 British pounds, depending on your destination and when you add an extra bag to your reservation.

See all easyJet carry-on policies.

The above rules apply to all economy passengers except those traveling from Brazil, whose carry-on luggage can weigh up to 22 pounds. Emirates only allows economy passengers to bring one item on board; whether you bring a carry-on bag for the overhead bin or a personal item to tuck under the seat, this bag must comply with the size limits.

See all Emirates carry-on policies.

Be aware that the 22-pound weight limit applies to both your personal item and carry-on combined. If your flight was booked through Iberia but is operated by Vueling, similar rules apply, but the size limits for your carry-on bags are slightly smaller.

See all Iberia carry-on policies.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

If you're traveling on the cheaper Light ticket, you may be asked to check your carry-on bag for no extra cost, if space is limited.

See all KLM Royal Dutch Airlines carry-on policies.

See all Lufthansa carry-on policies.

The above rules apply to LowFare+ customers. Passengers who fly LowFare (comparable to Basic Economy fare) can only bring a personal item (underseat bag) measuring 15 x 11.5 x 7.5 inches.

See all Norwegian carry-on policies.

Qantas

Economy passengers can opt to bring a nonrigid garment bag measuring 45 x 24 x 4 inches (or 73 linear inches) instead of a standard 22 x 14 x 9-inch carry-on bag. The above rules apply to all economy tickets and vary for higher classes on international and domestic flights with Qantas.

See all Qantas carry-on luggage policies.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways allows passengers to bring multiple personal items provided they fit under the seat in front of you. Unlike with other airlines, laptops and laptop bags do not count as personal items and must fit within your main hand baggage allowance. For tickets issued in Brazil, the carry-on weight limit is 22 pounds.

Be careful: Qatar doesn't accept carry-ons longer than 20 inches, which is shorter than many other airlines.

See all Qatar Airways carry-on policies.

Ryanair is a low-cost carrier, so unless you pay extra, you can only bring one small bag that fits under the seat in front of you, per the personal item guidelines above. To bring a larger carry-on bag, travelers need to purchase Ryanair's Priority & 2 Cabin Bags option, which typically costs between 6 and 32 euros depending on your destination.

Scandinavian Airlines

Most (but not all) Scandinavian Airlines fares allow you to bring one traditional carry-on bag, plus a personal item, which SAS calls an "underseat bag." There's one exception: Passengers traveling within Europe on the Go Light fare must pay for a larger carry-on bag. If you booked a Go Light ticket for intercontinental flights, a carry-on bag is included.

See all Scandinavian Airlines carry-on policies.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has an unusual method for measuring carry-on bags – the dimensions of the bag must not add up to more than 45 linear inches total. For example, a bag measuring 15 x 15 x 15 inches would be suitable. All passengers can bring one bag of this size, plus a smaller personal item. The personal item, whose dimensions are specified above, does not count toward the 15-pound carry-on limit.

Turkish Airlines

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic lets every passenger bring a carry-on bag, including children younger than age 2. You can bring a bag weighing no more than 13 pounds for your child, in addition to a collapsible stroller and/or car seat. Each passenger is also allowed to bring a handbag or small backpack, an umbrella, a walking stick and airport purchases. Take note: Laptops do not count as personal items on Virgin Atlantic and should fit into your main carry-on bag. There's no specific size limit on the other personal items, but bags or airport purchases should fit under the seat in front of you.

See all Virgin Atlantic carry-on policies.

Note that the above rules apply to passengers who book a TimeFlex or Premium Fare, as well as anyone traveling with a child under age 2 and/or requiring special assistance at the airport.

If you purchase an UltraBasic fare, you are limited to a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you.

Amanda Norcross is a seasoned traveler who packs just one carry-on bag and a personal item – even when adventuring with her toddler . She used her personal experience and research skills to put together this guide, and notes that even if your carry-on bag meets size restrictions, you may still need to check it at the gate because of limited space in the overhead bin. Away Luggage Review: Are the Popular Carry-Ons Worth the Hype?

We put the internet's favorite suitcase through hours of testing to determine if it's worth buying.

three away suitcases in a hallway, good housekeeping's away luggage review

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

What I thought of the Away Carry-On

Should you buy away carry-on luggage, other types of away suitcases, more away travel products we like.

As an analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, I have personally tested dozens of travel products, from carry-on luggage and smart suitcases to hardside luggage and travel backpacks . After putting the Away carry-on through our rigorous Lab evaluations — which include using specialized equipment to analyze scratch and water resistance, as well as an obstacle course to measure wheel performance and maneuverability — I was blown away by this bag for being impressively lightweight, scratch resistant, easy to maneuver and fitting everything in our packing tests. In fact, it landed the top spot for carry-on luggage in our roundup of the best luggage brands of 2024 .

The bottom line: Away luggage is absolutely worth investing in.

What is Away luggage?

Away is a travel gear brand that offers a variety of travel accessories, including checked suitcases , backpacks , packing cubes and weekender bags . The brand originally went viral for its carry-on featuring a removable battery that can charge your phone on the go, but Away has since stopped offering battery packs with its suitcases as most people already own portable chargers .

Away's Carry-On and Bigger Carry-On are the brand's two most popular items — they are made from the same materials and have the same features but in two different sizes. In the brand's most recent update to its luggage line, the standard Carry-On now has a slightly larger packing capacity and is a bit heavier than the previous model. I put the new standard Carry-On to the test in the Textiles Lab and I used the Bigger Carry-On during a recent vacation to find out if Away luggage is actually worth buying.

The Bigger Carry-On

When it comes to luggage material, polycarbonate reigns supreme over other hardside materials like plastics. Away carry-ons are made with polycarbonate, which is extremely durable and more lightweight than metals like aluminum.

Polycarbonate bags typically ace our drop tests, which involve GH pros filling a suitcase with a set weight and releasing the luggage from a 3-foot height. We repeat this test at various angles and note any damages and imperfections. As suspected, after I dropped it from different angles using our drop tester, the Away carry-on showed no dents, damages or changes in appearance .

Image no longer available

During testing, we also use a wire to scratch the surface of the suitcase and then rate any scuffs or marks left behind. Compared to other suitcases, Away's carry-on aced our scratch-resistance testing, showing very minimal scuffs and remaining in great condition . Because marks and scuffs are inevitable on hardside luggage, the suitcases also come with a magic eraser sponge, so you can easily buff the outside of your suitcase when scuffs appear to keep your luggage looking fresh trip after trip.

I gave Away's handles lower comfort scores, compared to the other carry-ons I tested. They felt a bit wobbly and less sturdy than other carry-on handles, and they don't offer any padding at the grip. The newest iteration of the brand's carry-on luggage features an additional underside grab handle near the wheels to help make it easier to stow and retrieve from an overhead bin.

The 360º wheels rolled easily over a variety of different surfaces when I was at the airport, including linoleum, tile and carpet. Testers agreed, finding this suitcase easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and over different floorings.

A carry-on absolutely has to hold everything you need for your vacation. Away carry-ons have massive interiors , clocking in at 39.8L for the Carry-On and 47.9L for the Bigger Carry-On. When you open the suitcase, there's equal packing space on both sides. One side is a large zippered compartment, and the other is open with compression straps to keep everything in place. There are also zippered pockets for smaller items, so nothing gets lost at the bottom of your suitcase. For ultimate organization, pair the suitcase with the brand's mesh packing cubes , which excelled in our recent packing cubes test and fit perfectly in the carry-on.

I was impressed with just how much I could fit in the Bigger Carry-On — enough for a whole week's vacation without needing a checked bag. It was easy to keep all my belongings organized, and I especially loved the included laundry bag that kept my dirty clothes separate. This bag came with a stylish leather luggage tag in a similar color to the suitcase that keeps my contact info accessible if my luggage gets lost. (Remember not to put your home address on your luggage tag and instead just your email address or phone number.) Away luggage also features TSA-compliant locks to keep your belongings protected.

a good housekeeping analyst testing away luggage's lock, good housekeeping's away luggage review

Starting at $275 for the Carry-On, Away luggage isn't cheap. But for the cost, you get a sleek suitcase made with durable high-quality materials and a well-organized interior for easy packing. At a similar price to our other top-tested luggage brands, like TravelPro and Samsonite , Away carry-ons aren't the most expensive suitcases I've tested either. (Both Tumi and Rimowa carry-ons start at $650, for example.) The brand also boasts an impressive 100-day return period on unused products, so you have lots of time to decide if it's the right fit for you. Note that personalized products and final sale items are not eligible for returns or exchanges.

If you love its chic appearance and durable polycarbonate shell, Away luggage can be worth the investment. But if you're ultimately in the market for something more affordable, I suggest checking out our top-tested picks from Target and Amazon Basics .

preview for How to pack 20 outfits in one hand-luggage suitcase

Besides the famous carry-ons, the brand offers a few other styles of suitcases. There are checked sizes of the polycarbonate luggage as well as aluminum and softside styles. The checked bags are made with the same durable polycarbonate material as the carry-ons and match in appearance if you're looking to create a stylish set.

I haven't yet tested Away's aluminum carry-ons , but I am wary of the higher price tag (starting at $675) and additional weight (10.1 lbs compared to 7.5 lbs for the polycarbonate version). Beyond that, it does feature an overall similar design with 360° wheels and a telescopic handle.

I just began testing the softside carry-on suitcases , the newest launch from the brand. These suitcases have one large interior (unlike hardside suitcases, which have packing space on both sides) with compression straps to secure your belongings. It also has more convenient pockets than the brand's hardside offerings with both a large and small exterior pocket. Testers gave it lower appearance scores compared to other Away luggage.

Away also offers Flex styles of its polycarbonate suitcases. These suitcases expand for an additional 2.25" of space to fit all the extra goodies you bought on vacation. However, when the suitcase is fully expanded, it no longer works as carry-on luggage and must be checked. Note that this style has a higher price tag than the brand's traditional polycarbonate carry-ons.

In addition to the brand's suitcases, GH analysts have tested a variety of travel products from Away. We were especially impressed by Away's Everywhere Bag (available in standard , medium and large sizes), which held an impressive amount in our Lab tests and was a favorite among testers for its sleek look and roomy, well-organized interior. The brand recently launched a trendy quilted version too!

Consumer goods you can carry in your suitcase

Holiday planning in Europe

Despite freedom of movement of goods within the EU, there are certain rules on taking certain consumer goods from one EU country to another . Failure to comply with set allowances, which can vary from country to country, could result in the confiscation of your goods, a fine or even criminal prosecution.

Travelling in the EU

The good news is that if you are travelling in the EU, you can carry any meat or dairy products with you as long as they are for your  own personal consumption . The same goes for cut flowers, fruit or vegetables as long as they have been grown in an EU country and are free from pests or disease. These rules also apply when you carry meat, dairy or plant products in your luggage, or if you order them online or have them sent by mail.

There are, however, limits on powdered baby milk (less than 10 kg), baby food, foods required for medical reasons, and special pet feed.

When it comes to alcohol and tobacco , you are entitled to transport such products, provided they  are for your own use and not for resale . Each EU country can set their own guideline values for the quantities  that you can bring in. However, these values cannot be lower than the guidelines levels established at EU-level: 800 cigarettes, 1kg of tobacco, 10 litres of spirits, 20 litres of fortified wine, 90 litres of wine and 110 litres of beer.

There are no EU-wide rules on travelling with cash between EU countries . You should, however, always check before you travel with the local customs authorities, if local rules exist in the country of departure, transit and arrival.

If you have a problem with faulty goods, faulty digital content or a faulty digital service bought in any EU country while abroad, the European Consumer Centre in your country can help. For more detailed information about your rights under national law, check the specific rules on legal guarantees and commercial warranties for the country where you made your purchase.

Travelling to the EU from a non-EU country

If you are   travelling to the EU from a non-EU country,  you are not allowed to bring any meat or dairy products  with you. You can, however, bring a limited quantity of fruit and vegetables as well as eggs, egg products and honey. Restricted quantities of fish or fish products are also allowed.   Most EU countries have  strict rules  on carrying  endangered animals or plants , and in some cases, you may need a permit.

You can also bring into the EU certain goods  free of VAT and excise duties  with you i f they are not for resale and you respect the set limits . For example, you can bring in   4 litres of still wine and16 litres of beer. In addition, you can bring 1 litre of spirits over 22 % vol. (such as vodka or gin) or   1 litre of undenatured alcohol (ethyl alcohol) of 80% vol. or   2 litres of fortified (for example sherry or port) or sparkling wine. As for tobacco, you should check the limits indicated by the customs authorities in the EU country you are travelling to.

For other goods, including perfume , you may carry up to a value of €300 per traveller or €430 for travellers by air and sea. Some EU countries apply a lower limit of €150 for travellers under 15. And if you’re motoring around the EU, you can carry 10 litres (maximum) of fuel  in a portable container, in addition to the fuel contained in your fuel tank.

If   you plan to enter or leave the EU  with  €10 000 in cash  (or its equivalent in other currencies) you must declare it to the customs authorities  in the EU country you are entering or leaving, using the EU cash declaration form. If you do not submit a cash declaration or the cash declaration is incorrect or incomplete, you will be subject to penalties.

This Dagne Dover Rolling Carry-On Is My New Go-To Travel Bag

Image may contain Baggage Suitcase Adult and Person

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

If ever there was a universal bag to satisfy every traveler—from the hyper-practical business professional to the frequent flyer and spontaneous adventurer— Dagne Dover ’s new Seattle Carry-On makes a strong case (literally) for that designation. The New York brand that brought you the beloved Dakota Backpack and Landon Carryall dropped its first-ever collection of rolling suitcases, dubbed The Luggage Edit , this June—an equally chic mix of colors, durable design, and the packing optimization that’s become synonymous with the brand since its inception in 2013.

“For many years, customers have been asking us for luggage, but ‘Dagnified,’” Melissa Mash, co-founder and CEO of Dagne Dover, says of the impetus behind the new line. The collection is a natural extension of its wheel-free Carry-On Edit —featuring duffles, laptop bags, backpacks, sling bags, and more—which debuted last fall. So, what does “Dagnified” mean, exactly? “Smart organization and a sleek signature aesthetic,” Mash says. To that end, the new 10-piece collection delivers on all fronts. Think: checked rolling luggage (25 inches and 28.5 inches), carry-ons (20.5 inches and 23.5 inches), a duffle , an extra-long garment bag , and packing cubes —all in visually pleasing colorways including Ash, Dark Moss, Warm Dust, and Onyx.

But the real standout, according to Mash, is the Larger Seattle Carry-On. To unpack what the hype is all about, I took the suitcase for a weekend getaway. Here’s my honest review.

Seattle Carry-On Luggage

Dagne Dover

Seattle Carry-On Luggage

Right out of the box, the suitcase has a “wow” factor—but in a subtle way. The minimalist, all-monochrome look from handles to wheels (in this case, Dark Moss) gives it a clean, modern aesthetic. The attention to detail continues: Even the stitching and hardware come in the same mossy-green hue. As for the overall feel, the bag is relatively lightweight (10 pounds for the larger carry-on) and feels sturdy. The suitcase is soft-sided, but has a firmer structure reminiscent of a hardshell piece, thanks to robust corner protectors and luggage feet on the exterior which help prop up the bag horizontally. The two-level retractable handle extends easily, the zippers glide seamlessly, and the four 360-degree wheels roll just as smoothly on concrete as they do on my Saltillo tile floors. Overall first impressions: It’s good-looking, it’s high-quality, it has lots of pockets, and it makes me want to be my best organized self while packing.

“Most brands lead with aesthetics, but aesthetics don’t solve problems for you or work hard for you,” Mash says. (Though don’t be fooled—style is certainly not an afterthought with any of Dagne Dover’s products.) “Our luggage is thoughtfully designed for the modern traveler so that they can be used exactly how you like to pack.” That sentiment is woven into the suitcase’s flexible organization system, a design that suits both the meticulous packer and the one who tosses everything into their bag moments before they head out the door.

Let’s start with the exterior. The material feels high quality and is eco-friendly to boot; everything is made from 100-percent recycled 900D fabric and Repreve polyester lining. There’s a sizable front pocket for easy access to chargers, your passport, and other grab-and-go necessities. Behind it is another large zippered pocket that houses a padded, air-mesh laptop sleeve with a velcro closure that easily fits my 15-inch MacBook Pro. This can be especially convenient when lugging your suitcase through TSA, since you can remove your laptop without having to open the whole suitcase. Behind the laptop sleeve is a U-shaped zipper, which sneakily grants you access to the full interior (more on that later).

Inside, you’ll find your standard two-sided packing compartments, but with a multifunctional twist. There’s a divider (with mesh pockets for added organization) that you can either use or roll-up with toggles for your packing preference, and compression straps over both main compartments which help maximize storage capacity. It also comes with a fabric shoe bag, which easily fits a size 15 New Balance sneaker. Add in some Dagne Dover packing cubes and you’ll have the most hyper-organized carry-on out there.

My favorite feature of the Seattle Carry-On is the large front pocket, which has a cleverly designed U-shaped zipper behind the laptop sleeve that lets you access the full interior without unzipping the entire suitcase. That becomes especially helpful when you’re grabbing items from the overhead bin mid-flight, be it your laptop, iPad, or otherwise. (Who really wants all of Row 11 checking out your tech gadgets or boxers ?) You could also use that pocket to quickly throw in last-minute items, like any impulse-purchases you made at the airport souvenir shop.

With all the suitcases on the market, the question remains: Is the Seattle Carry-On really worth the investment? Priced at a cool $625, it's certainly not a budget option, but the high-quality materials, functionality, eco-friendly design, and sophisticated yet understated style make it a worthwhile investment. Plus, the 10-year warranty may give you peace of mind as your bag gets jostled by baggage handlers or rolled over cobblestones. The only drawback I found is the lack of an expandable zipper, but with its thoughtful compartments and organizational features, you might not need the extra space anyway. Ultimately, if you’re a frequent traveler who wants a reliable bag that’s as functional as it is stylish, this suitcase delivers. Bottom line? It’s a “yes” from me.
