Städtetrip nach Wien mit A-ROSA

Highlights of the Danube Short Cruise

A short trip that will long remain in hearts and minds..

From Engelhartszell (Passau) to Wachau, Vienna, Bratislava and Linz to Engelhartszell (Passau).

In the Schlögener Loop, the Danube makes two spectacular U-turns before finally deciding to take the most beautiful route to Vienna: through the narrow Wachau valley, where castle ruins and icing-sugar monasteries peep out from terraced vineyards and apricot orchards. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the home of great wines and beguilingly beautiful. You’ll be spoiled for choice in Vienna. There’s just so much to see: historical buildings and museums, naturally, but also unexpected delights like a café that sells furniture, crazy second-hand shops and a tiny basement where you can listen to the finest jazz music. Linz will captivate you with its exciting stylistic contrasts, from Baroque to contemporary. Alone the Lentos Art Museum, which features works from the 20th and 21st centuries, and the Ars Electronica Center, with its high-tech exhibits, will keep you busy for hours.

A-ROSA Wachau Kreuzfahrten

Around 80 kilometres west of Vienna is the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This valley is lined with steep slopes on which some of Europe’s best grape varieties grow. In the midst of all this, you’ll keep spotting castles, palaces and Romantic ruins on the hills, which bear witness to a distant past. With such an enchanted landscape, it’s not surprising that there are many legends about the Wachau, dealing with both mythical phenomena and real-life events, including the Napoleonic Wars. Authors such as Josef Wichner and Hans Plöckinger published collections of these legends – the ideal thing to read while you are visiting the area.

Wienreise mit A-ROSA

This is a real highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something. The locals sound as though they are singing when they speak, and it is customary for certain business owners to address their regular customers with their full title. That’s just the way things are done here. With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year-round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!

A-ROSA Städtereise nach Linz

Baroque facades, numerous churches and, at the centre, the river. As you can see, it’s possible to describe Linz, Austria’s largest port city, in a single sentence. But that would be doing it an injustice, since there’s a whole lot more to Linz than buildings and water. In recent years, this former industrial hub has morphed into a European cultural stronghold. No matter whether it’s theatre, cinema, art or music, there’s both great demand and great support for culture here. The city also provides magnificent views – particularly in the evening – from the pilgrimage church on the Pöstlingberg hill.

Passau

Ships on the Danube

The Danube and its various regions are particularly charming when viewed from a ship. Enjoy the diverse landscapes, artfully built stone-wall vineyards, broad plains and precious art treasures on both banks that make this one of the most beautiful sections of river valley in Europe. Whether you are riding on a ship along the Danube or visiting it on land: the Danube regions are just waiting to be explored. There are several companies providing ship service on the part of the Danube flowing through Lower Austria. Most of them connect the towns and villages in the Wachau. For instance, ships run regularly between Krems and Melk. There are several connections from Vienna in the direction of Bratislava. For a special adventure, you might try a tour going downstream on the Wachovia, a ten-meter long vessel modeled on an historical ship. A sporty alternative is a ride in a zille, a flat-bottomed boat common to this region. The many ferries are a fun way to cross the river and explore perhaps the less well-known side of the Danube. Enjoy your precious time on the Danube in Lower Austria!

A perfect partnership Linz and the Danube

Linz changes the Danube – and vice versa: the Danube bends at Linz, changing its direction. Is it just a coincidence that, at this very point in the river, a city has emerged that has undergone many changes?

The Danube is Linz’s lifeline. A zest for life and culture – these aspects especially come to the fore in Linz on the Danube. The river is a stage on which life plays out, and where the emphasis is on taking a more gentle pace and going with the flow.

A cultural experience on the river bank – Donaupark

The Brucknerhaus concert hall – Linz’s top venue for high-quality music performances – the Ars Electronica Center and the Lentos Kunstmuseum form the cultural mile right on the banks of the Danube. The bridge between steel city and city of culture is characterised by the large-scale metal sculptures in the “forum metall” exhibit in the Donaupark, where in summer all of Linz surges out into the open air and onto the water.

Located between the Brucknerhaus and the Lentos Kunstmuseum, the Donaupark is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors in the warmer months. For events, such as the Klangwolke, the area between the city and the Danube is transformed into an open-air stage several times a year.

Discover Linz by boat

linz donau cruise

Change your perspective and leave your cares on shore by taking a boat trip on the Danube. There are opportunities to cruise past the city’s sights as well as to embark on excursions into the beautiful Danube region or take evening boat trips with musical accompaniment and fine dining.

Boat operators based in Linz offer you the chance to unwind on a cruise on the Danube, to escape the stress of everyday life and discover a slower pace of life on the water.

A special highlight is a boat trip around the Mural Harbor, where you can admire more than one hundred pieces of graffiti by artists from around twenty-five countries in Linz’s harbour. Discover the wide range of cruise options on the Danube in Linz.

Active pursuits along the Danube

Whether on foot, inline skates or with Nordic walking poles: sports enthusiasts can let off steam along the Danube. Cyclists enjoy the varied route that pairs nature and culture along the Danube cycle path through Linz.

The long-distance Donausteig hiking trail covers a distance of 450 km from Passau via Linz to Grein. Along the route, hikers can encounter curious figures from myths and legends, impressive landscapes and unique cultural treasures.

The Donaupark is also a popular destination for sports enthusiasts. Whether for a spot of yoga or a run, you can really relax in this green space.

Transdanube Travel Stories

linz donau cruise

The Danube region, consisting of 14 countries, is home to a valuable natural and cultural heritage across Europe. The river has always been a border and a link between cultures and peoples, an important waterway for trade and pilgrims, a special natural spectacle and a lifeline for cities and towns.

The Transdanube Travel Stories retell the Danube and connect selected places and sights along six exemplary travel routes. These stories, be inspiration to travel and serve to understand the Danube. Set out to experience the Danube!

Journey along the Route of Emperors and Kings

Along the Danube, the Route of Emperors and Kings connects cities of cultural importance, historical treasures and world-class landscapes from medieval Regensburg via Passau and Vienna to the metropolis of Budapest. The history of Central Europe was written on the Danube – and it is still very much alive today. From Regensburg via Passau, Linz, Vienna and Bratislava, the route passes through one historic city after another, crossing national and linguistic borders all the way to Budapest. Beginning in Roman times, crowned figures with royal retinues have journeyed this way and, over the centuries, have turned these old roads into the Route of Emperors and Kings.

We have just booked a cruise to the Baltics for next year. I am trying to find out the average cost for a day trip to Moscow from STP. I have searched several times, and whilst I have read reviews and reports about the trips etc - I cannot actually see any examples of the costs. I imagine its quite expensive - but we want to do it so I need to budget LOL !!

Any ballpark figures ? :D

We did the Moscow trip through our cruise ship in late July 2008. Its cost was a little under $1000 pp. Now, that cost through this cruise line is a little over that $1000 pp cost. Now, most are using the high-speed rail connection versus the air flights as we did. I have seen some other numbers from other cruise lines and/or private firms that run $700-850.

Why cheaper or the differences? As cruise lines are pressured to keep their "sticker price" low, they need to make up some "margin" with ship tours, beverages, spa stuff, etc., to help cover their costs and gain some profit. Second, different tours provide various features. Our tour included going inside the famed and spectacular Kremlin Palace. Most Moscow tours don't feature that option and you cannot just walk up there and get in on your own. That Palace is where the Czars were crowned and all of the current/recent Russian leaders assumed their powers.

We could have saved a little if we had used a private tour to go to and visit Moscow, but, with my wife's pushing, we felt it was worth it to pay a little more, do it through the cruise line. If there had been any problems or mix-ups, it was the ship's duty to "make it right" and we would not have to worry.

If you have three days in St. Petersburg and/or have been there before, then the Moscow tour can work out very well. It's not cheap, but in my view, worth it!! Both are a few of my visuals from this super great city with such interesting history and dramatic architecture.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

One of the Kremlin Wall Towers in Moscow:

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels insicde the famed Armory.:

Moscow’s subways are called the “People’s Palaces” with their marble coverings and unique designs for each of the different and many stations.:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

We did the day trip to Moscow with Alla-tour and were very pleased with our tour. Our guide whose English was great was a wealth of information and the day went very smoothly. I checked the web site and Alla's prices for 2012 range from $884 a person for two down to $542 a person for 6 with the 5% cruisecritic discount. So if you can get a group together the per person price goes down considerably. You can try to do this on the roll call section of cruisecritic.

We did not go to the Palace and as Terry says this is not included generally in tours. However, we did go to the Diamond Fund, an amazing display of crown jewels and jewelry in the Armoury building but not really part of the Armoury. I would think you could include this if you had a small group and really wanted to see it. It is quite small and does not accommodate a large group. You can google "diamond fund kremlin" to learn more.

Well said, cadreamer! (nice photos, by the way).

We also used Alla. She is just a super person to work with and, if you get a group together, she will accomodate what YOU want to do!! You can check-out her Moscow tour at:

As cadreamer suggests, go to your roll call on Cruise Critic & see if you can get a group together.

Terry, your pix, per usual, are awesome! Still envious! :)

Appreciate, Jill, the kind comments! Envy is GOOD!!

Below are a few more visuals on Moscow that are more "interesting". Fascinating to having seen both cities, back-to-back. It really puts all of this unique Russian history and architecture in better perspective.
