What is yellow fever?
Yellow fever is a serious disease caused by a virus spread by infected mosquitos, although it can’t be spread directly from person to person. Symptoms of the disease begin with fever, headache, chills and nausea or vomiting, and can progress to jaundice (yellow skin or eyes), liver, kidney, respiratory failure and death. Yellow fever occurs mainly in certain parts of Africa and tropical South America.
Frequently Asked Questions
The yellow fever vaccine can prevent yellow fever. It’s given as a single shot at least 10 days prior to travel. Booster shots are recommended for people who remain at risk.

All 152 Giant Food pharmacies in D.C. region are now offering the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible residents.
Since late 2020 Giant has been administering vaccinations and is continuing to work closely with local and federal authorities to receive additional doses on an ongoing basis. Giant’s pharmacies are currently utilizing the Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, dependent on specific location.
Giant’s licensed in-store pharmacists began administering COVID-19 vaccinations in Washington, D.C. in December, in Maryland and Delaware in January, and in Virginia in February. Prior to this week, the vaccine was offered at more than half of Giant’s pharmacies.
The expansion of availability of supplies to all Giant pharmacies will increase access to the vaccine for eligible residents and future groups in addition to furthering vaccination progress throughout the region, the company said in a news release.
“We’re extremely proud of all of our Giant pharmacy teams across our stores for their commitment to serving the public and doing their part to help our communities get vaccinated,” said Paul Zvaleny, Director of Pharmacy Operations at Giant Food, headquartered in Landover, Maryland.
In addition to in-store vaccinations, Giant has identified opportunities for off-site clinics to ensure equitable distribution of the vaccine throughout its communities, the release said.
To decrease barriers to access, Giant has worked closely with its community partners that have been able to assist with identifying populations that are most in need of receiving the vaccine. Last week, Giant pharmacists held a vaccination clinic at the Arc of Prince George’s County in Maryland to administer vaccines to individuals served by the organization.
Residents of Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware can check for eligibility and schedule first dose appointments at giantfood.com/covid-info. If either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine is received, the pharmacy staff will schedule second dose appointments at the time of the patient’s first dose.

Giant Food has announced that all vaccinations recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices are once again available at its 153 in-store pharmacies across Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. 1
According to a report released by the CDC, immunization rates had declined following the pandemic spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), making the opening of pharmacies such as those at Giant Food an important step toward raising immunization rates. 2
On March 13, 2020, the United States had declared a national state of emergency to control the spread of COVID-19, with public health response measures such as social distancing and quarantining enacted. Specifically, the hiatus of all non-essential services was put into place by the CDC in order to mitigate the pandemic’s effects on the US population, which affected the administration of vaccines across the country. 1
At the Giant Food pharmacies, the vaccinations that will be available for administration to customers include those that provide protection against pneumonia, shingles, tetanus, hepatitis, human papillomavirus, and influenza, although the influenza vaccine will become available in August 2020. All vaccinations offered at Giant Food pharmacies will be administered by certified in-store pharmacists and will not require appointments to be made in advance. 1
“Now it is more critical than ever for individuals to take preventative measures to protect themselves and their communities from sickness, and staying up-to-date with recommended vaccines is an important first step,” said Paul Zvaleny, Giant Food’s director of Pharmacy Operations, in a press release. “After pausing non-urgent services in April, we are looking forward to offering vaccinations to our customers and continuing to do our part to keep our communities healthy while following social distancing guidelines and strict safety procedures.” 1
In the press release, the company made note of the additional health and safety policies that will be enacted at the pharmacies while administering immunizations, such as maintaining social distancing measures; equipping associates with personal protective equipment consisting of face masks, face shields, and gloves; increasing disinfection procedures between vaccine administrations; and following additional screening processes for patients. 1
The company will also continue to offer medication delivery or curbside pick-up services in order to support minimal physical contact and travel for customers, allowing for the promotion of safe practices within the community during the ongoing management of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1
Furthermore, Giant Food pharmacists will be available for free consultations to support patients’ management of allergy symptoms this season. These consultations will include recommendations for appropriate OTC and prescription products in order to manage symptoms. 1

AstraZeneca admits to rare, deadly side effect of Covid jab as lawsuits mount
The maker of a Covid vaccination that was widely used in Australia has admitted to a very rare but potentially deadly side effect.

‘So important’: New cancer treatment relief
AstraZeneca has admitted that its Covid-19 vaccine could cause a rare but deadly blood-clotting condition, potentially exposing the UK pharmaceutical giant to lawsuits brought by loved ones of those injured or killed as a result of the jab, according to court documents.
Lawyers representing “dozens” of class-action claimants say some of their clients’ cases could be worth as much as $38 million, calling the Cambridge-headquartered pharma firm’s vaccine was “defective,” according to the Daily Mail .
Recent research from RMIT University and Monash University found Australia’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign likely prevented the death of 17,760 people aged over 50 in New South Wales between August 2021 and July 2022.
The AstraZeneca inoculation, which was also administered in Australia, has proven to be effective in combating Covid-19 with some estimates suggested it saved as many as six million lives worldwide. But it has also produced rare side effects in some people, reports the New York Post.
This specific was withdrawn from Australia in March 2023 .
AstraZeneca, which is contesting the claims, acknowledged in a February legal document that its vaccine can “in very rare cases,” cause a condition called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, or TTS.
TTS can cause patients to suffer from blood clots as well as a low blood platelet count, which in some cases have seriously harmed or even killed recipients of the company’s vaccine.
The potential complication was listed as a possible side effect from the time of the vaccine’s release, but AstraZeneca’s acknowledgment in February marks the first time the pharmaceutical titan has admitted it in court, according to the UK newspaper The Telegraph .
So far, 51 cases have been filed in London’s High Court, estimated to be worth around $190 million (GBP100 million) total, the outlet writes.
Due to a bargain AstraZeneca struck with the UK government at the height of the pandemic to indemnify the drugmaker against potential lawsuits, taxpayers will be on the hook for any payouts resulting from the claims.
‘We need an apology’
One of the claimants who filed suit is Jamie Scott, an IT engineer and father of two left with a permanent brain injury resulting from a blood clot after he received the vaccine in April 2021.
His wife, Kate, told The Telegraph she’s hopeful the company’s admission will accelerate the outcome of their case.
“We need an apology, fair compensation for our family and other families who have been affected. We have the truth on our side, and we are not going to give up.”
In a statement, AstraZeneca expressed sympathy for anyone who was allegedly harmed by the vaccine, but defended it as a net positive and pointed out that complications are exceedingly rare.
“Patient safety is our highest priority, and regulatory authorities have clear and stringent standards to ensure the safe use of all medicines, including vaccines,” the statement reads in part.
“From the body of evidence in clinical trials and real-world data, the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine has continuously been shown to have an acceptable safety profile and regulators around the world consistently state that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of extremely rare potential side effects.”
The AstraZeneca Covid vaccine was first approved for emergency use in December, 2020.
Of the 50 million doses administered in the UK during the crisis, 81 people have died from blood clots potentially linked to the jab, according to health data compiled by UK pharmaceutical watchdog the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
The odds of a recipient developing TTS as a result of the vaccine is calculated as somewhere in the range of 1 in 50,000.
More Coverage
In Australia, the government said the rate of TTS linked to the jab was around two people per 100,000 vaccinated.
In all, the AstraZeneca vaccine is credited with saving as many as six million lives globally during the pandemic, according to the University of Oxford, which partnered with the company in developing the jab.

A new children’s cancer centre has reached a major milestone as it moves towards completion in 2025.
