Day 3: Pergamum, Thyatira & Izmir

seven churches of revelation tour

Our first visit of the day is Pergamum. The church of Pergamum was praised for its forbearance; (Rev. 2:12-17) it was here that the first Christians were executed by Rome. We'll visit the fabled Acropolis, pass through the Royal Gates, view the foundations of the Altar of Zeus and visit the ruins of the library (which once held 200,000 volumes). Next we travel east to Thyatira viewing the ancient roadway and period columns. Thyatira was once a busy trading center and famous as a "seller of purple," the most favored of the Seven Churches. We continue south to Izmir, which is the third largest city in Turkey and a long time center for Jews and Christians. In Paul's day, Izmir was known as Smyrna and was another of the Seven Churches (Rev. 2:8-11). Our lodging this evening will be in Izmir.

Day 4: Sardis, Philadelphia, Pamukkale

seven churches of revelation tour

Departing our Hotel in Izmir, we'll see Polycarp's Church and visit the ancient roman agora. Then, we travel to Sardis, which was berated by John for its facade of strength when, in reality, it was weak (Rev. 3:1-6). Here coins were minted and the dyeing of wool originated. We'll visit the gymnasium and synagogue. Our next stop is nearby Philadelphia from where we are challenged to “hold fast” and look forward to the coming of the "new Jerusalem" (Rev. 3:7-13) in the Book of Revelation. Not much is left of the city except for the ancient wall and the remains of a Byzantine basilica in the modern city of Alasehir. Our lodging this evening will be in a lovely spa hotel in Pamukkale.

Day 5: Hierapolis, Laodicea & Colossae

seven churches of revelation tour

Hierapolis, meaning "Sacred City," was an ancient center for pagan cults until it was transformed into a Christian center in the first century. According to tradition, the Apostle Philip lived and was martyred in Hierapolis. It was likely the hot springs of Hierapolis (in contrast to the cold mountain springs near Colossae) that combined to bring application to the "lukewarm" Laodiceans (Rev 3:14-22). This connection between the cities lies behind Paul’s reference to Hierapolis and Laodicea in his epistle to the Colossians (Col 4:13). Laodicea contains many acres of ruins to visit including a stadium and remnants of a sophisticated water system. Nearby Colossae is well-known throughout Christian circles as the receiver of Paul's letter to the Colossians. Today, the town has fallen into obscurity and nothing remains. We spend the remainder of the day traveling through the Turkish countryside arriving in the port city of Kusadasi where we spend two nights. The day will not be complete without a visit to a local Turkish Rug cooperative.

Day 6: Ephesus

seven churches of revelation tour

We travel to the nearby town of Selcuk for a visit of ancient Ephesus. Ephesus was once a thriving port town of 250,000 people. Today you can still see the spectacular excavations of the major streets in this ancient city. We view the Library, Agora, theatre, colorful mosaics in the aristocratic Terrace Houses, and a panoramic outlook of the surrounding ancient port area (including a wealth of church history and cultural insight). Then we continue with a visit to the Basilica Church of St. John, which houses an immersion baptismal and is believed to be resting place of John. From here we have an excellent overview of the Ephesus harbor, the Mosque of Jesus, and see the site of the Temple of Artemis, which is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Day 7: Depart for Home

This morning we transfer to the Izmir airport for our flight back to the USA.

The archaeological site of Hierapolis is also home to a magnificent theater, burial sites, and the enigmatic Plutonium, a cave considered an entrance to the underworld, adding a layer of mysticism to the city’s cultural heritage.

After exploring Hierapolis, head to Laodicea , a city mentioned in the Bible as “ The Lukewarm Church ” (Rev 3:14-22) in the Book of Revelation. Laodicea, known today as Laodikeia, was an important ancient city known for its wealth and prosperity, particularly its textile industry and black wool garments. Testimonials

As a young Catholic priest I was a little apprehensive to travel in a Muslim country with as much tensions as there has been in the recent past, but I was really looking forward to seeing the seven Churches which St John wrote to in the book of Revelations, as well as Mary’s house in Ephesus. I could not have been more impressed with your guide Ertunga’s knowledge and professionalism throughout the entire trip. I would have zero hesitations to go back or to recommend Ertunga as a tour guide. It as an incredible historical and spiritual experience.

Frhecker Wichita, Kansas

Enjoyed our recent 22 day trip in Western Turkey visiting many Christian History sites. Ertunga was able to knit together much disparate info, suggesting changes as we went along to compensate for weather problems, etc. I would make the following recommendations: (1) Take Euros and Turkish Lira, not USA dollars, (2) Take eye drops and diarrhea tablets, and (3) Do not pet any cats or dogs – disease spreads rapidly. Best parts of the trip for me was Cappadocia and Priene.

Swaby_commander - Helensvale, Avustralya

Our Biblical Tour of Turkey was more than what we had expected… And this was because of Ertunga and his impeccable planning and handling of our private tour. His stories made all the places we visited more alive….the ruins were impressive even dramatic but as Ertunga explained all these places to us these stones became living and breathing cities
Ertunga, was exceptional and his knowledge of history, Biblical sights, legends, myths was amazing and he had a wonderful sense of humour. We saw everything on our itinerary exactly as we had requested and the food and accommodation was great. We have no hesitation in recommending Ertunga as he made sure that we had and extremely comprehensive and fun filled trip and it was a true Turkish experience.

Roger and Raini - Melbourne, Australia

We are recommended on tripadvisor.

Travel back in time for a memorable #tbt.

Tour Destinations.

Domitian temple, public agora, harbour street, philadelphia, tour program..

Welcome to the Seven Churches tour program! On the first day, we’ll begin our journey to the land of the seven Churches of Revelation. It would be best to fly early to Izmir (Ancient Smyrna), Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB). Once you arrive, we’ll welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Kusadasi. In the evening, you’ll have a lecture about the Book of Revelation of Saint John, followed by a welcome dinner and leisure time.

After breakfast, we will be headed to Ephesus, which is the first of the seven Churches of Apocalypse and was once a thriving city with an excellent harbor, beautiful marble monuments, and the famous Temple of Artemis, which was one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. During our visit, we will explore the significance of Artemis and discover why Saint Paul stayed in Ephesus for two and a half years. Ephesus is one of the most essential Biblical cities in Christian history. After we visit the site, we will drive to the Basilica of Saint John, where we will study Revelation 1:1 and learn about Saint John’s exile to the Island of Patmos.

After a local lunch, we will drive to Smyrna. The Church of Fidelity and Nonviolent Resistance will read the letter and appreciate being in the 2000-year-old Agora Marketplace of Smyrna overnight in Izmir.

On Day 3, we will visit the Ancient city of Pergamon in Asia Minor. We will start by climbing to the Acropolis of the town, where the Throne of Satan was located. There, we’ll see the foundation of the famous altar of Zeus, talk about Antipass, and learn about ancient daily life and letters to the Christian Community of Pergamon. Next, we’ll visit The Red Basilica, once the Temple of Egyptian Gods and Serapis. After lunch in Pergamum, we’ll drive about 60 kilometers to the modern city of Akhisar. We’ll visit the Ancient Thyateira, the Church of Ultimate Compromises, and immorality there. Although only a tiny portion of the ancient city remains, it was once the hometown of Lydia, the famous patron of Saint Paul (Acts of Apostles, Chapter 16, Verse 14), during the second missionary journey. We will discuss the industries of the Ancient City, the Jews, and the difficulties of being a Christian. Finally, we’ll drive for another mid-50 minutes to reach our hotel, the Lydia Thermal Hotel, which is close to the Ancient city of Sardis.

On Day 4, our journey begins early in the morning with a visit to the ancient city of Sardis, once the capital of King Croesus. Here, we will see the largest Synagogue in the ancient world and learn about the city’s history concerning the letter of the Apocalypse of Saint John. We will also discuss the metaphors of the words of God. Our next stop is the city of Philadelphia, also known as the city of brotherly love and the early Christian community of endurance. We will see the destroyed pillars of the Church of Saint John and talk about the fidelity of Christians and how God rewards them. Finally, we will arrive at Laodicea, the Church of Conscious Compromises,  and understand how earthly pleasures seduce Christians and correlate them with the letters of the Book of Revelation. After our visit, we will take a short drive and spend the night in Pamukkale.

Day 5, the Church of Colossae and the City of Saint Philip, Bishop Papias. After a short drive, we’ll reach the Ancient city of Hierapolis, where one of the 12, Saint Philip, was martyred, according to patristic writings. At the same time, it is the home of Saint Papias, the Bishop of Hierapolis, a friend of Saint Polycarp, a disciple of Saint John, the first church father who wrote about the Book of Revelation. We will enjoy the picturesque view of the hot spring pool as well. We will drive to Colossae, not to see the ruins, but to be there and remember the letters of Paul addressing the Colossians and Philemon. we will commemorate St. Epaphras, the founder of Christianity in the region. After lunch, the services will be over. You may be transferred to the Airport or continue to an extension tour.

After enjoying our Turkish breakfast, we will depart from our hotel and begin our tour of the historical highlights of Istanbul. First, we visit the beautiful Rustem Pasha Mosque, which was designed by the extraordinarily prolific Ottoman imperial architect, Mimar Sinan. Then, we walk nearby to Eminönü’s Spice Bazaar, the large covered market that has remained the city’s center for spice trade since its creation in the 17th century. Afterwards, we head to the hill where ancient Byzantium was founded and enjoy a stroll through Hippodrome Square, the former sporting and social center of Constantinople that hosted chariot races during the Roman period. Next, we are off to the domed masterpiece of Hagia Sophia , the Orthodox patriarchal basilica-turned Ottoman imperial mosque-turned secular museum commissioned by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6 th century. Then, we head to Topkapi Palace , the former abode of Ottoman Sultans that still houses their legion of treasures, including an extensive collection of royal jewels. We will then end our day with an evening of shopping at the Grand Bazaar, the massive covered market that houses a labyrinth of streets lined with shops selling jewelry, leather products and many other handcrafted souvenirs. Dinner and Overnight in Istanbul.

seven churches of revelation tour

Today, we will eat breakfast early before heading to the pier to embark our speed ferry departing at 07:00 am. Upon arrival to the Port of Bandirma, we head to the town of Akhisar to visit ancient Thyatira , one of the Seven Churches praised for its increasing faith but admonished for its tolerance of Jezebel (Rev. 2:18-28). Next, we continue to Sardis, a once powerful city located along an important ancient highway and among the fertile plain of Hermus (Geldiz River). Though Sardis was a strong and wealthy city with a reputation for being alive, God announced that it was actually dead (Rev. 3:1-6). Here, we will explore the white marble royal way, the massive Temple of Artemis, the large gymnasium, and the famous synagogue. Annual archaeological expeditions sponsored by Harvard and Cornell Universities have unearthed over eighty Greek and seven Hebrew inscriptions as well as numerous mosaic floors revealing this synagogue as one of the most significant synagogues of antiquity. Afterwards, we will head to the modern town of Alasehir and visit the site of ancient Philadelphia , the church that received God’s highest commendation (Rev. 3:7-13). Here, we will see the remains of a brick-built Byzantine basilica adorned with 11 th century frescoes. Dinner and Overnight in Denizli.

seven churches of revelation tour

This morning, we are off to visit Pamukkale, “Cotton Castle”, and dip our feet in the thermal waters that flow down the hilltop’s unique white travertine terraces. At the summit, we explore the archeological remains of Hierapolis , a significant site of early Christianity thanks to Paul’s missionary efforts here (Colossians 4:13). Because the city sits atop the travertine cascades of Pamukkale (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Hierapolis became a healing center wherein the site’s thermal pools were used to treat various ailments. Today, we will stroll among a number of important ruins including well-preserved Roman structures like the town theatre and Temple of Apollo before continuing on to Laodicea . This city was one of the Seven Churches that the Apostle John chastised the inhabitants for being lukewarm (Rev. 3:14-22). Here, we will see the site’s well-preserved stadium, gymnasium, and theatres, giving us insight into this city’s former prominence. Next, we drive to Kusadas i, a beautiful resort town that sits on the Aegean coast Dinner and Overnight in Kusadasi.

seven churches of revelation tour

Today, we are off to explore Ephesus . Located in the modern town of Selcuk, ancient Ephesus is one of the most well-preserved archaeological sites in Turkey. Originally an ancient Greek Ionic city built in the 10th century B.C., Ephesus grew to become the largest metropolis and capital of the Roman province of Asia Minor. This political influence and the city’s large Jewish community attracted the attention of the apostles, including Paul. Here, he carried out his mission for two years and was Bishop of the Ephesian Church before he was exiled to Patmos. Today, we will walk on the Marble Road passing numerous historically rich sites including the Temple of Artemis (Diana), the fountain of Trajan, and the Temple of Hadrian. We will also see the Library of Celsus, which adorns the site’s most impressive square, and sit in the theater (the largest surviving from the Roman period). This massive theatre (capable of entertaining up to 25,000 spectators) was the scene of an uprising provoked by a merchant named Demetrius against St. Paul and his teachings (Acts 19:23). Before returning to our Kusadasi hotel, we will stop at the ruins of St. John’s Basilica. Constructed by Justinian in the 6th century, this basilica stands over the believed burial site of John the Apostle. Dinner and Overnight in Kusadasi.

seven churches of revelation tour

This morning, we will drive to the thriving modern city of Izmir and visit the ruins of ancient Smyrna , one of the Seven Churches that the Apostle John relays the promise from God: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Rev 2:10). Here, we will see what remains of the Agora, the ancient market place that was built in the 4th century BC, before continuing on to Pergamum, one of the most powerful cities in the ancient world. The city rose to prominence following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. and eventually came under Roman control in 133 B.C. Although the city benefited from immense wealth, in the Book of Revelations, the risen Christ instructs John to convey the message that the people of Pergamum, the site of “Satan’s throne”, needed to repent (Rev 2:13-16). Today, we will tour the Acropolis, which sits atop a 1000-foot windswept mountain, offering a view of the neighboring modern towns, the azure waters of the Aegean, and the ruins of Pergamum that cascade down from the ancient city center. Here, we will explore the Temple of Trajan, Temple of Athena and the Altar of Zeus. Unfortunately, little is left of the altar, which was once among the grandest monuments of the ancient world. In fact, every stone of the structure, including its 400-foot long frieze depicting the battle of the gods and giants, was shipped off to Berlin by German Archaeologists leaving only the altar’s foundation. Thankfully, much more remains of the Great Theatre. Among the steepest of its kind and an acoustic phenomenon, this theatre could entertain up to 10,000 spectators. Nearby are the remains of the famous Library of Pergamum. Once housing some 200,000 scrolls, the library’s collection even exceeded that of the great library of Alexandria before Mark Anthony gave it to Cleopatra as a wedding gift. Afterwards, we will drive to Canakkle for the night. Dinner and Overnight in Canakkale.

seven churches of revelation tour

After breakfast, we will drive to the village of Tevfikiye by the entrance of the Dardanelles to see the remains of the legendary city of Troy . Settled as early as 3,000 BC, Troy was made famous by Homer’s Iliad , the epic account of the Trojan War. Afterwards, we will cross the Dardanelles by ferry and head to Istanbul for the night. Dinner and Overnight in Istanbul.

seven churches of revelation tour

Today we say good-bye to Turkey and return to the Ataturk International Airport to board our flight back home.

Pre-Tour: Bosphorus Cruise

Tour members are welcomed for our departing flight to Istanbul via wide-body aircraft arriving the next day. Meals served on board.

Today we will arrive in Istanbul. We will be met and loaded on our motor coach for our drive to Istanbul. We check into our hotel where we have the rest of the afternoon on our own. Dinner and overnight.

seven churches of revelation tour

This morning, we will embark on a cruise of the Bosphorus , the winding straight that separates Europe and Asia and connects the Black Sea with the inland Sea of Marmara. This is our time to relish the views of the old wooden mansions, Ottoman palaces, and ancient fortresses that dot the river’s coast before the ship drops us off in Asia! Here, we will visit Beylerbeyi Palace , which was constructed between 1861 and 1865 during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz as a summer residence for the Ottoman sultans. Next, we will enjoy impressive views from Camlica Hill. At 268 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in Istanbul, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. From the top, we can see the Bosphorus Bridge, the Eminonu Peninsula, the Sea of Marmara , and the Princes’ Island. And if the skies are clear this day, we may also see as far as Mount Uludag near Bursa! Then, we will drive across the bridge back to Europe and return to our hotel. Dinner and Overnight in Istanbul.

Post-Tour: More of Turkey & Cappadocia

seven churches of revelation tour

After enjoying our breakfast, we will head to the Istanbul Ataturk Airport to board our flight to Hatay Airport. Upon arrival, we will drive close by to the city of Antakya ( Antioch ), an important seat of early Christianity. Here, we will visit the Mosaic Museum to see the second largest collection of classical and Roman mosaics in the world. Afterwards, we will head to one of the oldest churches in Christianity, the Church of St. Peter. This church is actually a cave carved into the side of Mount Starius where the first Christians of Asia Minor worshipped. Before returning to our hotel, we will see Selucia Pieria, the ancient port of Antioch from which the Apostle Paul and Barnabas embarked on their first missionary journeys as chronicled by Acts (Acts:13:4). Dinner and Overnight in Adana.

seven churches of revelation tour

Today, we depart from our Adana hotel to drive to the dusty provincial town of Tarsus. Once the capital of the province of Cilicia, Tarsus was the site where Mark Antony and Cleopatra first met, and is the birthplace of Paul the Apostle. According to Acts, Paul was born “Saul of Tarsus”, but was brought up in Jerusalem and became “Paul the Apostle” after his encounter with Christ (Acts 9:11; 21:39; 22:3). Here, we will visit the Well of St. Paul and the Gate of Cleopatra. Afterwards, we head north to Cappadocia , where we will stop at Pigeon Valley to enjoy a panoramic view of this region’s unique rock formations, popularly known as fairy chimneys. Formed over many centuries by wind and water erosion on soft volcanic rock, these rock formations rise high from the valley floor like chimneys. Early inhabitants of this region carved these chimney tops with birdhouses to collect pigeon droppings long used by local farmers as fertilizer. Dinner and Overnight in Cappadocia.

seven churches of revelation tour

This morning, we will visit the Kaymakli Underground City, the most impressive of the subterranean settlements due to its ventilation system. Afterwards, we are off to explore the Monastic Center of Goreme. This open-air museum is dotted with quaint carved-from-rock churches and chapels embellished with colorful frescoes. Then, we will visit Ortahisar to see its gorgeous valleys and stop at the Three Beauties, the most famous of the region’s many conic rock formations. Today, we will also hike through the valley of Zelve and see its hundreds of carved-from-rock houses and chapels and we will visit Pasabag Valley, also known as Monk’s Valley, to explore its tower-shaped hermitages. We will then end our day at the potter’s studio in Avanos, a town established by the Hittites on the banks of the Halys River. This town has carried on the Hittities’ tradition of pottery that uses the river’s famous red clay to make ceramics. Dinner and Overnight in Cappadocia.

seven churches of revelation tour

This morning we leave Cappadocia bound for Konya. First, we reach ancient Iconium, where Paul the Apostle and Barnabas invested a lot of their missionary efforts preaching the Gospel despite persecution. According to Acts, they spoke boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to do miraculous signs and wonders (Acts 14:1-3). Then, we will head to Konya’s city center and visit the Mevlana Museum, which houses the tomb of the great 13th-century Persian poet and founder of the Order of the WhirlingDervishes, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi. Popularly known as Rumi in Western countries, meaning “Roman” in Arabic, his followers and Muslims alike call him “Mevlana”, meaning “our master”. We will then end our day at the Karatay Museum. This former medrese, or place of learning, was founded in 1251 by the Seljuk emir Celaleddin Karatay as an institution for Islamic studies. However, the building is now a museum showcasing the most beautiful examples of Seljuk tile work. Dinner and Overnight in Konya.

seven churches of revelation tour

Today, we depart Konya and head to the modern town of Yalvac to see the ruins of Antioch in Pisidia . Sitting on the southern foothills of the Sultan Mountains, this city was once a major Roman colony that Paul the Apostle visited on his First Missionary Journey with Barnabas. Here we will tour the archeological site and visit the Yalvaç Archaeological Museum to see a display of many of the site’s discovered artifacts. Afterwards, we will continue onto Antalya, Turkey’s largest international sea resort which sits on the beautiful Mediterranean coast. Dinner and Overnight in Antalya.

Here, we will explore Perge’s extensive ruins, including a well-preserved theatre, the Agora, a colonnaded boulevard, Roman baths, a gymnasium, the necropolis, a memorial fountain, and the Greek and Roman gates. The ancient city of Thyatira was famous for purple dyes, and there are remains of a basilica at the site where the town once stood. Explore the remains and other architectural fragments from Roman times.

Our next church in Sardis, one of the most breathtaking sites of the Seven Churches tour. The church here was portrayed as “the dead church.” Sardis was the capital of the 6th century BC Lydian Kingdom, and ruins of the once magnificent city remain. Explore the grand temple of Artemis, the temple of Cybele (later became a Byzantine Church), a reconstructed synagogue, and the restored gymnasium. Daily Itinerary

Day 1 day 1 – depart home.

Your pilgrimage begins as you board your international flight for Istanbul.

Day 2 Day 2 – Arrive in Turkiye

Upon arrival, you will be met by our airport representative. Transfer to your hotel in Istanbul for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 3 Day 3 – Istanbul

The bejeweled capital of Istanbul sits between two continents and is home to 450 mosques. You will visit the famous Blue Mosque with its six minarets and sparkling interior. Visit the underground cisterns dating to Byzantine times. Walkthrough Hagia Sophia, the largest church in Christendom for 1,000 years, was built by Justinian (532 -537 AD). The church has 107 columns, fossil-embedded, white marble floors, and beautiful glass mosaics. Enjoy the aroma of cinnamon, cloves, thyme, and other exotic spices as you explore the Grand Bazaar. Over 4,000 shops sell everything from herbs to gold. This afternoon, you will fly to Izmir. Dinner & your overnight stay will be in Izmir.

Day 4 Day 4 – Pergamum & Thyatira

Pergamum is one of the seven churches mentioned in Revelations (Rev. 2: 12). It displeased the Lord because it tolerated the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which Christ hated (Rev. 2:13 -17). The fabled Acropolis towers 1000 feet above the town and commands a spectacular panorama. As you pass through the Royal Gates, you will enter one of the great centers of traditional Greek culture. You will see the foundations of the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Athena, and the ruins of the library, which once held 200,000 parchment volumes. You will see the remains of the Temple of Trajan, the Grand Theatre, the gymnasium, and the health center (Aesclepion). Visit Thyatira, once a busy trading center, home to Lydia, the “seller of purple” (Acts 16). Today, it is famous for Persian rugs. Thyatira, one of the Seven Churches mentioned in Revelations, tolerated the false prophetess, Jezebel (Rev. 1: 11; 2: 18 -29). Dinner & your overnight stay will be in Izmir.

Day 5 Day 5 – Philadelphia, Sardis, Smyrna & Colossae

Visit the site of Philadelphia, also one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 3: 7 -13). Christ told those who overcame that He would write upon them “the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is New Jerusalem.” (Rev. 3: 12) Today, not much is left to mark the spot. You will see an ancient wall and the remains of a Byzantine basilica. Travel to Sardis, another of the Seven Churches of Revelation. You will be impressed by the massive scale of the Temple of Artemis, the white marble Royal Road, the gymnasium, and the synagogue. The third-largest city in modern Turkiye is Izmir, long a center for Jewish and Christian communities. In Paul’s day, the town was known as Smyrna. It was also one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 2: 8 -11). You will see the agora, the colonnaded commercial center where Roman statues can still be seen. Famous as the receiver of Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, the town of Colossae has fallen into obscurity. While you can still see traces of the theatre, the necropolis, and the church, the ancient city is indistinguishable, mainly ruins. Dinner & your overnight stay will be in Pamukkale.

Day 6 Day 6 – Hierapolis, Laodicea & Miletus

Hierapolis is blessed by hot mineral springs and some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Asia Minor. Paul mentions Hierapolis in his Letter to the Colossians in saluting Epaphras, a fellow laborer, for his love of the brethren there (Colossians 4: 13). The ruins cover more than a mile. You will see the impressive amphitheater with seats still in perfect condition. You will see the city gates, column-lined streets, and arches, which have stood through time and earthquakes. The area is known as Pamukkale, meaning “Cotton Castle,” named for the limestone-laden hot springs cascading from one white-edged terrace pool. The Christians of Laodicea, one of the Seven Churches (Rev. 3: 14 -22), were chastised for being lukewarm, “You are neither cold nor hot” (Rev. 3: 15), and for being too comfortable incorporating pagan and Christian beliefs. In the famous scripture from Revelation (3: 20 -21), Jesus says to the Laodicean church: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock...”. Today, many acres of ruins are to see, including the stadium and columned streets. Visit the excavations at Miletus, where Paul bid farewell to the elders of the church at Ephesus at the end of his Third Missionary Journey (Acts 20). Dinner & your overnight stay will be in Kusadasi

Day 7 Day 7 – Ephesus

Ephesus is one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 1: 11). In ancient days, Ephesus was a bustling port town of 250,000, graced with wide, colonnade bordered streets. Today, you will be impressed with the spectacular excavations of the major roads of ancient Ephesus. You will view the library and the vast agora. The Temple of Artemis was declared one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Today, only a single column remains to mark the site. You will visit the Basilica of St. John, the traditional site of his grave. From the basilica, enjoy a commanding view of the area. You will see the Museum of Ephesus for an up-close look at artifacts from the ancient city. You will have time to explore this powerful city on your own and recreate some of its footsteps of Paul. Adorned with rich mosaic murals and colossal columns, Saint Sophia is a world heritage home to many faiths throughout history and is currently operating as a museum displaying fabulous Byzantine art and architecture. The Sultan Ahmet Mosque is also famously known as the Blue Mosque thanks to the light that shines through over 2,500 stained glass windows, reflecting onto the dark blue Iznik tiles within. Built during the period 1609 – 1617 and a masterpiece of woodworking and calligraphy, it really is a stunning sight to behold and is also home to the tomb of Sultan Ahmet 1. Next up you visit the Hippodrome, once the site of chariot races and a focal point of city life. The remains of some of its walls are still visible to this day, as is an obelisk brought over from Egypt in 390 AD by Theodosius 1.

You will visit the spectacular Topkapi Palace Museum, built in 1472 by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror. The palace is built around four courtyards leading into one another and you will have the opportunity to view the many treasures of the Ottoman sultans including fine porcelains, gem-encrusted objects d’art, traditional armor and imperial costumes, stunning tile work, and sacred relics from the Christian and Islamic faiths. Then you visit the Church Of Aya Irini before ending the day with a stop for 10 Days - The Seven Churches of Revelation at the remarkable Grand Bazaar, one of the earliest shopping malls ever built. Soak up the vibrant magical atmosphere while sipping on Turkish coffee from Sark Kahvesi, a truly historical coffee roaster in the Grand Bazaar. Each coffee variety has been prepared with a blend of traditional knowledge, experience, and an overall “love of coffee” and a visit is classed as one of your Unique Moments. Then peruse the marvelous collections of jewelry, antiques, oriental rugs, and wonderful handcrafted souvenirs.

Day 4 Istanbul & Bosporus

Istanbul & Bosporus

After your breakfast, you will start your full day of sightseeing tour in Istanbul. First, you will visit Basilica Cistern, the largest of the many underground cisterns built during the Byzantine Empire to supply the city with water. This cistern is especially fascinating because the Byzantine builders recycled many stone structures- capital heads and columns-- that had been used in earlier temples. Now an upside-down Medusa stares out at us from her watery home. You continue your touring in Istanbul. Visit the Spice Market, dating back to the 17th century, but still, the most popular bazaar visited by locals to shop for fresh ingredients to spice up the dishes prepared in the kitchens of Istanbul. Wandering through the aisles of the market led by the enchanting smells, you will find an opportunity to blend with the locals and will be greeted by eager merchants competing to show you their eye-dazzling displays of a selection of spices brought from different parts of the world. Visit the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul and hidden gem sights of Istanbul Fener & Balat, the oldest Jewish neighborhoods of Istanbul. One can see a few synagogues in this fascinating location where Muslims and Jewish communities lived in harmony to constitute Ottoman society from the outside. You will observe how the two cultures were influenced by each other throughout the years. Your day will end with a Cruise along the Bosporus on an exclusive boat. As your cruise along the strait of Istanbul, you will have a chance to see the Imperial Palaces built out of marble, beautifully built humble Ottoman mosques, the Ottoman Mansion (called Yali in Turkish), Ottoman Fortresses, and the Bridges that connect Asia to Europe.

Day 5 Troy & Canakkale

Troy & Canakkale

This morning you will depart Istanbul and drive along the Sea of Marmara to the Gallipoli peninsula. As you travel along the shores of the Sea of Marmara, your tour guide will discuss the history of the campaign and the vital importance of the waters of the Dardanelles to the aims and outcomes of the battle. You visit the UNESCO world heritage site of Troy, where you will see its legendary walls and the replica of the wooden Trojan Horse.

Day 6 Troas & Pergamon

Troas & Pergamon

After your breakfast, you will drive to Alexandria Troas, which was visited at least twice by St. Paul. You know that in his third journey, St. Paul also traveled by land from Alexandria Troas to Assos. In Troas, you will visit the theater, the Temple of Athena, and the agora. Drive to Pergamum and visit the Acropolis. On the 1200ft high Acropolis, you will see the steepest sloped theater of the ancient world, the temple of Athena, and the Altar of Zeus, which St. John denounced to Pergamum church members as a “Throne of Satan.” In his letters to the Seven Churches of Revelation. Continue your drive to Izmir.

Day 7 Sardis & Laodicea

Sardis & Laodicea

After breakfast, you will start your busy day with a visit to Sardis, the capital of ancient Lydia. You will see the Temple of Diana (which later became a church), the earliest built Synagogue discovered so far in Turkey, and the Gymnasium. Sardis was one of the 7 Churches of Revelation. After Sardis, you will drive to Philadelphia, which was also one of the 7 Churches of Revelation. After the visit, you will drive to Laodicea, which has been extensively excavated non-stop all year round since 2009. Laodicea was one of the 7 Churches, and this is the only one today where the exact location of the Church has been discovered. Your next visit will be the ruins of Hierapolis, with its beautiful calcium deposit-covered travertine terraces, the ancient Necropolis, baths, theatre, and St. Philips Martyrdom.

Dinner and overnight will be in Karahayit (Pamukkale).

Day 8 Hierapolis & Colossae

Hierapolis & Colossae

OPTIONAL Early Morning Hot Air Balloon Experience. An early start today as you will be collected from the hotel one hour before sunrise for your thrilling hot air balloon experience over Pamukkale.

In the morning you will visit the ruins of Hierapolis, the natural pools. Drive to Laodicea, where John called its people ‘lukewarm’ and also one of the Seven Churches. Visit Colossae. Its biblical significance lies in the fact that the book of Colossians was addressed to the church here (Col 1:2) and that Philemon lived in this city.

Day 9 Ephesus & Kusadasi

Ephesus & Kusadasi

After breakfast, you will visit the Odeon Theatre, where the state of affairs used to be held and then you will view the Hadrian Temple. This was dedicated in 118 AD to Hadrian, Artemis, and the people of Ephesus but was greatly reconstructed in the 4th century. This magnificent Corinthian style temple has beautiful reliefs on the porch and the Medusa head on the porch is said to protect the city from its enemies. You then proceed to the Celsus Library, the best-preserved structure of its kind. The inscription on the side of the front staircase says that the library was built by Julius, in his father’s honor after his death. His father Celsus was the Roman governor of Asia Minor early in the 2nd century AD. The Great Theatre dates back to the Hellenistic period and in the 1st century AD, it was expanded by the Romans until it reached a seating capacity of 25,000. You will then head up the Marble Road, part of the sacred walkway taking us up to the hills behind Ephesus, where the Virgin Mary is believed to have spent the last days of her life. This is now home to a charming chapel, consecrated by the Pope and at the very same spot in which the House Of The Virgin Mary stood. In fact, local tradition suggests that the Virgin Mary actually lived and died at this holy place in the company of St John to whom she was entrusted to Jesus Christ before he was crucified. You will also see the few remains of the Temple Of Artemis and then after lunch proceed to Miletus, an ancient city located near Akkoy at the mouth of the Buyuk Menderes River. Miletus owed its importance to its position on the trade routes and was one of the largest cities in Anatolia. Highly prosperous it founded many colonies and was the home of the ancient philosophers Anaximander, Anaximenes, and Thales, the town planner Hippodamus, and architect Isidorus. With such a prominent position, Miletus became the most important port in the area and from the 7th century BC onwards has been controlled in turn by the Persians, Romans, and Seljuk Turks.

Dinner and overnight will be at the hotel in Kusadasi town.

“What a trip!  Leading up to visiting Israel we were excited with anticipation, but boy did it exceed anything we had imagined.  Our tour guide CJ was outstanding. He broke down the Jewish culture, past and modern history, biblical connections/application, and geography of Israel at every site.  It was just so awesome with how many sites and artifacts we were shown and how seamlessly our trip was organized. Throughout the week we were taken well care of.  We stayed in very nice hotels, ate great food, and enjoyed a comfortable, air-conditioned bus driven by our expert driver, Happy.  Happy made sure we stayed hydrated and took extra special care of us in keeping us safe. CJ and Happy complemented each other wonderfully. With packed days of touring, we enjoyed restful evenings. We also felt safe and secure throughout our travels, allowing us to delve fully into what we were learning and what God was teaching us about Himself. Besides enjoying CJ and Happys sense of humor, we quickly experienced camaraderie between the rest of our group, which made little things like traveling, eating, and taking pictures fun.  Thank you all for loving on us; we thank God for you and this short time we were able to connect.  And most importantly we thank God as we recognize all the lessons we learned along the way.  He definitely used this trip to reveal new things to us as we learned more about the Bible, God, and ourselves.  Thank you and many Blessings, Jeanne Jackson

This was my first time to Isreal, and it was such a fantastic trip due to our guide Adam and our driver Money Mike! Adam is so knowledgeable and was really able to make each site come alive for me. We had a really large group, and I am sure that Adam felt like he was “herding cats” all week, but he kept us together and moving through the areas while sharing so much information. With Mike’s driving and sense of humor, I felt very safe even though the streets sometimes seemed way too narrow for all of the buses and cars! The team of Adam and Money Mike were fabulous, and I would highly recommend them!!

He was personable, fun, and incredibly knowledgeable in the Bible and history of the land. Will definitely do this trip again and go through Travel With Friends!

Seven Churches Tour of Revelation

seven churches of revelation tour

According to Revelation 1:11, on the Greek island of Patmos, Jesus Christ instructs John of Patmos to: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamum, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”

For now, we will discover …

What to Expect

The Book of Revelation addresses seven letters to seven churches in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) ( Revelation 2-3 ). Each letter, as proclaimed by Jesus and recorded by John the Apostle, declares the triumphs and failings of the recipient churches and warns each congregation to repent.

The advice in these letters is prophetic, forewarning present-day Christian communities of the snares that can lure us away from our faith.

Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.” (Rev. 1:11)

Turkey is hosting all seven of the churches mentioned in the opening chapters of the Book of Revelation . The churches of Revelation were located in Asia Minor during the era of the Roman Empire at the time the book was written around 100 A.D. In the opening chapter of Revelation, the author John send his greetings and then describes a vision he had in Patmos. John’s vision began with specific messages to seven different Christian communities in modern Turkey. Some are addressed to the “ angel ” of the city. It may have symbolized the spirit of the city or refer to a heavenly or earthly messenger.

Paul has sent 7 letters to the people and angels of these 7 churches . The purpose of the letters was to grant hope and assurance to the people who were about to encounter persecutions and austerity .

These 7 churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation are: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea and have a crucial spiritual significance for churches and believers today. It is possible to visit all these 7 churches in one tour. The details of the tour will be as:

Walking down from the ancient city, we will visit the Asclepion , which was used as a health centre in old times. The last stop will be the Thyatira ruins which is in a modern city of Akhisar now. Overnight accommodation in Akhisar.

Philadelphia Ancient City

Day 3 ( Tour of Sardis, Philadelphia, Hierapolis and Laodecia, breakfast & lunch included)

We will start the day quite early around 08:30am and our first stop will be Sardis , an ancient political and cultural center in Anatolia which was the capital of the Lydian Kingdom . The ruins at Sardis are quite impressive such as public toilets, gymnasium and the synagogue and Artemis Temple. Ruins of a small building at the south corner of the synagogue from 4th century AD are believed to be an early Christian church , subject of John’s text on the church at Sardis in Revelation.

Philadelphia , the city of Brotherly Love, is our next stop. The city has some ruins of the city wall and some arches dating from the late Byzantine era.

We will then visit Hierapolis and Laodicea Ancient Cities. Laodicea, which is of great importance to Christianity and a Holy pilgrimage center since the 4th century CE , has been mentioned in the Bible and one of the seven churches of Revelation. Archaeological Site of Laodicea was included on the UNESCO Tentative List in 2013.

Hierapolis Ancient city has thermal springs and travertine terraces which is going to be unique experience to see a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient city contains the biggest necropolis (cemetery) in Anatolia with about 1200 graves . What makes Hierapolis Ancient City different from the others is monumental limestone and marble tombs, sarcophagi and house-type tombs and St. Philip The Evangelist Martyrium. St. Paul mentions Hierapolis along with Laodicea as the center of Epaphras’ ministry . Overnight accommodation in Pamukkale.

Ephesus

Day 4 ( Tour of Ephesus, St. John Basilica and House of Mary, breakfast & lunch included)

Our last day will start with a drive to Selcuk to visit Ephesus ruins which was one of the greatest cities in the ancient world. Ephesus has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. Ephesus has special significance for Christians. From Ephesus Paul preached, Timothy taught , while later, John warned the church at Ephesus “…you have abandoned the love (you had) at first.” (Revelation 2:4) .

The tour includes a visit to St. John’s Basilica built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. It is believed that the grave of the Apostle John was located under the central dome in the basilica. The tour will end with a visit to House of Virgin Mary which is the place where she lived for a while with St. John. Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
